- 0:30Speaker 3: What's up, guys, This is coach Alex Fan Houghton on
- 0:32Speaker 3: the Faithful Fitness Podcast. Thank you so much for joining
- 0:34Speaker 3: me today and I'm so excited about the conversation I
- 0:37Speaker 3: get to have today with mister Phil Thompson.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Phil, how you doing, brother?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Doing good? Thanks for having me.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks for joining me.
- 0:43Speaker 3: With all of the things you have going on in life,
- 0:46Speaker 3: it means a lot that we get to sit down
- 0:48Speaker 3: for this hour as dads and as athletes and talk
- 0:51Speaker 3: about faith and fitness. So I want to introduce you
- 0:55Speaker 3: to my audience and then I want to have a
- 0:57Speaker 3: great conversation today with you, and so I'm going to
- 1:00Speaker 3: read what you wrote for me for your bio, which
- 1:03Speaker 3: I appreciate. By the way, this is probably one of
- 1:05Speaker 3: the most humble bios I've gotten to read on faithful fitness.
- 1:08Speaker 3: So here we go, and Phil says, I'm just a
- 1:12Speaker 3: dad that lives a life trying to inspire my kids
- 1:15Speaker 3: to challenge themselves and to live a healthy lifestyle.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I grew up in a small town in southwest Pennsylvania,
- 1:22Speaker 3: went to optometry school in Puerto Rico, where I met
- 1:24Speaker 3: my wife. After graduation, we moved back to her hometown
- 1:28Speaker 3: in Kansas, just out of site of Kansas City. I
- 1:30Speaker 3: love the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and endurance sports. I started
- 1:33Speaker 3: traflon in my twenties after growing up mainly playing hockey
- 1:37Speaker 3: until I had to have three knee surgeries throughout my
- 1:39Speaker 3: high school years. Now traflon in endurance sports has become
- 1:43Speaker 3: a huge passion and I love challenging myself with them.
- 1:47Speaker 3: So cool, man, so cool. I got to ask, though,
- 1:49Speaker 3: I got to ask, how does a hockey player end
- 1:51Speaker 3: up in Kansas. It's not like a Kansas isn't really
- 1:55Speaker 3: big on hockey, are they.
- 1:57Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 1:58Speaker 5: It's a very few between with ice drinks around here.
- 2:02Speaker 5: But that's where my wife grew up. That's where he
- 2:04Speaker 5: wanted to live, and that's what brought me back to Kansas.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I love it.
- 2:09Speaker 3: I'm in Conway, Arkansas because my wife is a Conway native,
- 2:13Speaker 3: and so after we got married and started having kiddos,
- 2:16Speaker 3: she's like, please bring me back home.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I'm like, you got it, Hey, yeah, gotta do what
- 2:20Speaker 2: they want.
- 2:21Speaker 4: I totally get it. Now, where did you play hockey?
- 2:23Speaker 5: I grew up in southwest Pennsylvania, so a little town
- 2:26Speaker 5: called Smithfield, and I actually played hockey out of Morgantown.
- 2:29Speaker 2: West Virginia. Okay, okay, I got you.
- 2:32Speaker 5: I got traveled all through Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh We
- 2:35Speaker 5: played all those teams growing up. So that was I
- 2:38Speaker 5: think I started when I was six or seven years old.
- 2:41Speaker 5: And then I started having knee surgeries in high school,
- 2:43Speaker 5: so that kind of brought that to an end. And
- 2:46Speaker 5: then I started playing a little bit more in college
- 2:49Speaker 5: after all the rehab and everything.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Man, So we're gonna be talking about traf one and
- 2:54Speaker 3: for anybody watching or listening who doesn't know what that
- 2:56Speaker 3: means is that is swimming, biking, and running. So traflon
- 3:01Speaker 3: requires knees, Like, yes, so what what knee surgeries, did
- 3:07Speaker 3: you have to rehabilitate from?
- 3:09Speaker 5: So I tore my medial ptella ephemeral ligament in bothies,
- 3:14Speaker 5: so it's basically like at the same time. Uh So,
- 3:18Speaker 5: growing up, my kneecap would pop out of place, so
- 3:20Speaker 5: it would go like laterally to the outside of my knee,
- 3:24Speaker 5: but it always came back, so I never like got stuck.
- 3:28Speaker 5: They said it was like part hereditary. And then just
- 3:30Speaker 5: once it did it a couple of times. That ligament
- 3:32Speaker 5: was so loose that it almost seemed like every hockey
- 3:36Speaker 5: game I played, my kneecap would go out, but I
- 3:38Speaker 5: was so used to it that I'd go sit on
- 3:40Speaker 5: bench for a couple minutes and come right back to playing.
- 3:43Speaker 5: But finally in uh, I think I had them in ninth, tenth,
- 3:47Speaker 5: and eleventh grade, if I'm correct. But if I had
- 3:49Speaker 5: my left one done, but since I was still growing,
- 3:52Speaker 5: they couldn't fully repair it. They just tightened it up
- 3:56Speaker 5: for the most part, and then I had my right
- 3:59Speaker 5: one done, but then I had to go back and
- 4:01Speaker 5: have my left one done because the first surgery didn't
- 4:03Speaker 5: exactly work right.
- 4:05Speaker 3: So those serve you well now because you got nice
- 4:08Speaker 3: tight ligaments.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, they're probably not one hundred percent, but they
- 4:13Speaker 5: do do the job that they need to.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Well a bit a bit. I'm a bit of a
- 4:17Speaker 4: kinesiology r.
- 4:17Speaker 3: And I know you went to school for optometry, so
- 4:19Speaker 3: so I imagine you had to study anatomy and stuff.
- 4:21Speaker 4: But but for our listeners.
- 4:23Speaker 3: What that means is is, once upon a time, Phil
- 4:26Speaker 3: did a lot of lateral movements in his sports. But
- 4:31Speaker 3: but trafon is is all sagial.
- 4:33Speaker 4: You go that way, you don't go laterally.
- 4:36Speaker 3: If you do it, something's gone wrong, right, Yeah, but
- 4:39Speaker 3: you go sagile. Do you do you have any more
- 4:41Speaker 3: knee issues nowadays?
- 4:43Speaker 2: Not really.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Sometimes I feel like they're probably more sore from everything
- 4:48Speaker 5: I went through, but not I haven't had any like
- 4:52Speaker 5: scares or anything with my kneecap wanting to pop out
- 4:56Speaker 5: of place. Because growing up, there'd be times I would
- 4:58Speaker 5: do something I'd like, ooh, like that gets money, just
- 5:03Speaker 5: feeling like it's going to go, and then a lot
- 5:05Speaker 5: of times it would pop out of place.
- 5:07Speaker 3: But well, during a traflon, not so much. But I
- 5:10Speaker 3: guess you're a dad with three boys and a girl. Yeah,
- 5:15Speaker 3: and you I love your Instagram. I if anybody watching listening.
- 5:19Speaker 3: If you're on Instagram, go follow healthy eyes three six
- 5:22Speaker 3: five at healthy Eyes three six That's that's correct, right,
- 5:25Speaker 3: that's your handle. Okay, go follow Phil at healthy eyes
- 5:29Speaker 3: three six five because all of his stuff he shows
- 5:32Speaker 3: a lot of traflon training.
- 5:33Speaker 4: He does a lot of very practical stuff. But but you.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Also you're you're very adamant that a huge reason that
- 5:39Speaker 3: you train is to show up well for your kids.
- 5:43Speaker 3: And and I have two boys. I don't have three.
- 5:46Speaker 3: I have two boys, and those suckers beat on me
- 5:48Speaker 3: all the time, like we are constantly wrestling, throwing, slapping, fighting.
- 5:53Speaker 3: You know, there's nerf guns involved, there's there's lightsabers, there's
- 5:57Speaker 3: all the stuff.
- 5:57Speaker 4: I'm sure you I'm sure you know.
- 5:59Speaker 3: But uh, but you also do a lot of weight training,
- 6:03Speaker 3: which in my line of work is like you have
- 6:06Speaker 3: to do that. You have to do that, not just
- 6:08Speaker 3: for posteral stuff in trafon, but but since none of
- 6:11Speaker 3: your traflon training is laterally loaded, if you're going to
- 6:15Speaker 3: live life as an active dad, you've got you gotta
- 6:18Speaker 3: do that.
- 6:19Speaker 4: So so has has.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Being an athlete in a professional sense and raising three boys,
- 6:27Speaker 3: Like how does that cross paths? Because I feel like
- 6:29Speaker 3: I'd be like on the eve of the you know,
- 6:31Speaker 3: big Texas iron Man, I'd be like, all right, guys,
- 6:35Speaker 3: nobody jump on Dad's head today, Like back off please.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely uh tough the balance.
- 6:41Speaker 5: But I think going into all the traf on stuff,
- 6:45Speaker 5: I knew, I knew what I was getting into, and
- 6:48Speaker 5: I didn't want that part to take away from being
- 6:51Speaker 5: a dad. So trying to still be at all their stuff,
- 6:55Speaker 5: not saying, hey, I have to go ride my bike
- 6:57Speaker 5: so you guys have to sit here and do nothing
- 6:59Speaker 5: like staying present with them and not not giving into
- 7:05Speaker 5: my own self and putting them on the side. But yeah,
- 7:09Speaker 5: we definitely do all the wrestling, playing in the yard
- 7:12Speaker 5: and all of that. And I think with the strength training,
- 7:16Speaker 5: we have a garage gym so they get to come
- 7:19Speaker 5: out and see me do that all the time, and
- 7:22Speaker 5: that puts just that little mindset into them that hey,
- 7:26Speaker 5: we need to kind of take care of ourselves too,
- 7:28Speaker 5: And you know, they'll be out there and we have
- 7:30Speaker 5: a little uh play gym set for them and they'll
- 7:32Speaker 5: be playing with me, and but then just getting them
- 7:36Speaker 5: active and being physical out in the yard. And yeah,
- 7:38Speaker 5: we do like I said, the wrestling and everything inside
- 7:41Speaker 5: every night, so right never ends to get ganged up
- 7:44Speaker 5: on when it's three to one, and are the youngest
- 7:46Speaker 5: one who's you'll actually do almost four has really started
- 7:49Speaker 5: to join in and take take us on.
- 7:52Speaker 2: So it's fun.
- 7:53Speaker 4: How old is your oldest?
- 7:55Speaker 2: He is seven?
- 7:56Speaker 4: Okay, and so you've got seven, what's what's the next one?
- 8:00Speaker 2: In five? Three?
- 8:01Speaker 5: And then the girl is almost eleven months okay?
- 8:04Speaker 2: Okay, cool, very cool.
- 8:06Speaker 3: So so I picture this in my house, My nine
- 8:09Speaker 3: year old he's getting really smart, and so he lets
- 8:12Speaker 3: my six year old bum rush me and then he
- 8:16Speaker 3: suckers me like he tries to find.
- 8:18Speaker 4: The opening like, oh I got him.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And and it's it's almost aware. I'm having to put
- 8:23Speaker 3: them in rounds because I will inevitably be injured by
- 8:27Speaker 3: this battle two on one.
- 8:29Speaker 4: There's no more zone defense. You know, they're getting too
- 8:32Speaker 4: smart for that.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Are you entering that too, or are you still taking
- 8:36Speaker 3: them all on at the same time?
- 8:38Speaker 5: Right now, it's still taking him on the oldest kind
- 8:41Speaker 5: of stays off to the side. He's kind of like
- 8:43Speaker 5: sounds like your oldest, like my middle boy will attack
- 8:46Speaker 5: me and just does most of it and then he'll
- 8:49Speaker 5: just kind of The older one will stay on the
- 8:50Speaker 5: side and you know, get his hits in when he can.
- 8:53Speaker 5: And the youngest, now, yeah, he just comes and jumps
- 8:56Speaker 5: on and gets rolled around.
- 8:57Speaker 4: It's like san Zu's Art of War.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Right as they get older, like, okay, I'm going to
- 9:01Speaker 3: send the infantry.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Then the cavalry will come from.
- 9:03Speaker 5: The side, and they do a lot more planning than
- 9:07Speaker 5: just running in and jumping on.
- 9:09Speaker 4: That's right, That's awesome.
- 9:12Speaker 3: So I want to talk about how you got into
- 9:15Speaker 3: traflon because because hockey, in my mind, and trafon are
- 9:19Speaker 3: not the least bit related.
- 9:20Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 9:22Speaker 3: I was a hockey player, I had to rehab my knee,
- 9:24Speaker 3: and then I got into Traflon's like, that doesn't make
- 9:26Speaker 3: any sense to me.
- 9:27Speaker 4: So I need you to walk me through the process.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Because I love to run, I don't mind I don't
- 9:33Speaker 3: mind cycling.
- 9:34Speaker 4: I hate swimming, but I'll do it.
- 9:36Speaker 3: But the idea of putting all three of those things
- 9:39Speaker 3: together is difficult for me to wrap my head around. However,
- 9:43Speaker 3: as a coach over the last two decades, I have
- 9:46Speaker 3: helped a lot of people execute a trafon because that's
- 9:50Speaker 3: either a bucketlest item they have or something they wanted
- 9:52Speaker 3: to get into or something like that. And so so personally,
- 9:56Speaker 3: outside of coaching my clients, I haven't I haven't got
- 10:00Speaker 3: by the bug.
- 10:00Speaker 4: I don't understand the appeal.
- 10:01Speaker 3: So I would love to hear kind of your story
- 10:03Speaker 3: how you got into trafon and what made that a
- 10:06Speaker 3: passion for you.
- 10:08Speaker 5: Yeah, like I said, went through the knee surgeries and
- 10:12Speaker 5: the one benefit that had was that actually got me
- 10:15Speaker 5: into a gym for all the rehab stuff. So basically
- 10:19Speaker 5: started in ninth grade, started doing more like strength training,
- 10:22Speaker 5: which I don't think I really.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Would have done too much of throughout high.
- 10:25Speaker 5: School necessarily, but it got me in that area and
- 10:29Speaker 5: I just kind of I was at the physical therapy
- 10:31Speaker 5: place every week putting in all that work. So that
- 10:35Speaker 5: was my introduction to strength training. But then went to college,
- 10:39Speaker 5: and in college I did more running and strength training.
- 10:44Speaker 5: But I've always liked running. I've never been a great runner,
- 10:47Speaker 5: but something I've always liked to do. And then eventually
- 10:51Speaker 5: I had a friend that was like, Hey, I'm gonna
- 10:53Speaker 5: do a triathlon and I at the time, this would
- 10:56Speaker 5: have been twenty ten, so two thousand and nine or
- 11:01Speaker 5: twenty ten. Okay, I had really had no idea what
- 11:05Speaker 5: a triathlon was. I had to look it up and
- 11:07Speaker 5: I was like, oh, that kind of sounds cool. So
- 11:10Speaker 5: I actually went and got a bike and started training
- 11:13Speaker 5: a little bit, and then I think I did my.
- 11:16Speaker 2: First one in twenty ten or twenty eleven.
- 11:19Speaker 5: It was just a little spread triathlon, and that's how
- 11:23Speaker 5: I started out in the sport, and it was just
- 11:27Speaker 5: kind of all downhill or uphill from there.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Was it love att first event? Like you did the event,
- 11:33Speaker 3: We're like this is awesome?
- 11:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it was this.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Swimming is always my weakest and has always been my weakest.
- 11:41Speaker 5: So I got through the swim, and then the biking
- 11:44Speaker 5: I enjoyed, and then just trying to run. It was
- 11:47Speaker 5: definitely a very eye opening experience because I think you think, like, oh,
- 11:51Speaker 5: I just got to run a five case run of
- 11:54Speaker 5: biking and swimming, but yeah, I was like cramping up
- 11:57Speaker 5: and everything. It was a very opening experience and just
- 12:01Speaker 5: a good challenge. So is yeah, I want to keep
- 12:03Speaker 5: challenging myself, and so yeah, just started doing more and more.
- 12:08Speaker 5: But it was always sprint and Olympic distance stuff just
- 12:11Speaker 5: around basically all around, like Western Pennsylvania. And then when
- 12:17Speaker 5: I went to optometry school in Puerto Rico, that's when
- 12:21Speaker 5: I probably did more races down there because they have
- 12:23Speaker 5: a little Puerto Rico Trathlon series and that was all
- 12:28Speaker 5: Olympic distance racing, but super fun and just kind of
- 12:32Speaker 5: racing all the same people around the island all the
- 12:34Speaker 5: time was a lot of fun. And then I did
- 12:38Speaker 5: my first half iron Man in two thousand and fourteen,
- 12:42Speaker 5: I believe, and that was the Puerto Rico seventy point three,
- 12:47Speaker 5: So that.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Was only four years after your your sprint trathl on.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Yeah you got to the half iron Man.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Wow.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So I did that.
- 12:56Speaker 5: And I always knew I wanted to do like a
- 12:59Speaker 5: half iron Man, but I never knew like where would
- 13:01Speaker 5: go from there. But did that one, and then I
- 13:04Speaker 5: feel like the longer stuff like that addiction really started.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Learning to really push myself. But then also, you do
- 13:15Speaker 2: all this work.
- 13:16Speaker 5: It's kind of nice to have an event that lasts
- 13:18Speaker 5: five six hours versus doing all this work and all
- 13:21Speaker 5: of a sudden it's over in an hour. So yeah, yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 5: I think that knowing the work I needed to put
- 13:27Speaker 5: in to get through those races is kind of what
- 13:30Speaker 5: I get addicted to. Okay, almost more than just the
- 13:34Speaker 5: race itself. I always say, like that race is the
- 13:36Speaker 5: celebration of all the work you did prior.
- 13:41Speaker 2: But yeah, So.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Then I did that half iron Man, and I raced
- 13:45Speaker 5: then and this came back to Kansas and raced a
- 13:49Speaker 5: bunch leading up until we had our first son in
- 13:52Speaker 5: twenty seventeen. Okay, and then I did one more half
- 13:56Speaker 5: iron Man after he was born, and then I took.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Four years off.
- 14:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I was like four years off until I was
- 14:06Speaker 5: like I always stayed in shape.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I ran, I rode my bike, but never didn't really.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Race, didn't like train for an event.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Just I just kind of maintained everything in a way.
- 14:17Speaker 5: And then I was like, I'm gonna sign up for
- 14:19Speaker 5: a local sprint trathlon here and I did that, and
- 14:22Speaker 5: then I was talking to my wife and she was,
- 14:26Speaker 5: you know, always has supported me, and I was like, hey,
- 14:29Speaker 5: I'm just going to do a full iron Man and
- 14:31Speaker 5: I just need to sign up for it. So it
- 14:33Speaker 5: was like no, I think it was October November. I
- 14:35Speaker 5: did that sprint, and a couple of weeks later I
- 14:38Speaker 5: signed up for Ironman Tulsa in twenty twenty three. So
- 14:41Speaker 5: that was my oh, my first full iron Man, and
- 14:46Speaker 5: the big addiction.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Has really started since then.
- 14:49Speaker 5: So I started started training for that one and did
- 14:54Speaker 5: a half leading up to it, and during that full
- 15:00Speaker 5: iron Man, like I knew, like this is what I
- 15:02Speaker 5: wanted to do, Like the longer evad it's not super
- 15:06Speaker 5: high intensity, but it's just it's a long day.
- 15:08Speaker 4: It's it's a long day. Yeah.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I might be wrong about this, but I think the
- 15:13Speaker 3: Texas when you did recently, you did it in like
- 15:16Speaker 3: ten hours and fifty four minutes or something like that.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Texas was just ten ten forty five or ten forty nine,
- 15:23Speaker 3: ten forty nine forty It was probably forty five. It
- 15:25Speaker 3: was probably forty five. I'm probably transposing though. Sorry, I
- 15:28Speaker 3: don't want to add eleven minutes here. Eleven minutes man,
- 15:32Speaker 3: but let help help my listeners understand the distances here,
- 15:36Speaker 3: because because when I hear iron Man, I go holy cow,
- 15:40Speaker 3: because I know what that I know what that entails.
- 15:44Speaker 3: So a sprint trath one is about how far I know.
- 15:47Speaker 3: There's different distances depending.
- 15:48Speaker 5: On Yeah, I want to say the sprints are usually
- 15:52Speaker 5: like a seven hundred and fifty meter swim, and then
- 15:57Speaker 5: they'll the bike ride will range from ten to fifteen miles,
- 16:01Speaker 5: and then depending five k run.
- 16:03Speaker 2: And then a five k run. Okay.
- 16:04Speaker 3: So to my listeners understanding, like we're talking about swimming
- 16:07Speaker 3: about a half mile, we're biking ten to fifteen miles,
- 16:11Speaker 3: and then we're running about a five k.
- 16:12Speaker 2: That's a sprint traft one.
- 16:14Speaker 4: So what so when we do a.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Trathlon like an Olympic distance traft one, what's what are
- 16:20Speaker 3: those distances?
- 16:21Speaker 5: That's a fifteen hundred meters swam, a forty kilometer bike
- 16:25Speaker 5: ride which is like twenty four ish miles, and then
- 16:29Speaker 5: a ten k.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Okay, So fifteen hundred meters is almost a mile, sixteen
- 16:32Speaker 3: hundred meters is a mile, and then we're going to
- 16:34Speaker 3: about a twenty four twenty four mile ishu y twenty
- 16:38Speaker 3: four point something, and then a ten k which is
- 16:40Speaker 3: six miles, okay, and then we start getting where I
- 16:44Speaker 3: call the crazy town, Like this is where you live.
- 16:48Speaker 3: You live, and you were the mayor of crazy Town.
- 16:50Speaker 3: And I say that with admiration, not not denigration.
- 16:55Speaker 4: So so I half iron Man is how long?
- 16:58Speaker 5: One point two miles swam a fifty six mile bike
- 17:01Speaker 5: ride and then a half marathon.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Round that's the Oh that fifth the half marathon after
- 17:07Speaker 3: the fifty six mile bike ride is the that's the thing,
- 17:10Speaker 3: like people, Oh, I ever run a half marathon?
- 17:11Speaker 4: Like did you.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Ride fifty six miles prior? It's very different lead legs
- 17:18Speaker 3: for sure. And then finally the iron Man.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Which so everything's double there.
- 17:23Speaker 5: It's a two point four miles way one hundred and
- 17:25Speaker 5: twelve mile bike ride and then the marathon.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Wow, epic, dude, and you completed that in ten forty
- 17:31Speaker 3: five this year. So so the Texas one, though just
- 17:34Speaker 3: recently I didn't I didn't quite understand us on Instagram.
- 17:37Speaker 3: I apologize for the ignorance here. You did the double?
- 17:40Speaker 3: What's the Texas Double?
- 17:41Speaker 5: So that is so Texas has a half iron Man
- 17:45Speaker 5: this year was April six, so that's in Galveston, Okay.
- 17:48Speaker 5: And then the four iron Man was April twenty six,
- 17:53Speaker 5: So they always have two races, so I did them
- 17:56Speaker 5: both this year, which the Texas Half Ironman in April.
- 18:01Speaker 5: The beginning of April, the swim was canceled, so we
- 18:03Speaker 5: only had to bike and run. So we had some
- 18:05Speaker 5: crazy weather come through and they canceled the swim portion.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Okay, okay, gotcha.
- 18:10Speaker 3: You had you had one post that said something like,
- 18:13Speaker 3: on Saturday, I'm an iron man and on Monday, I'm
- 18:17Speaker 3: just an eye doctor who walks funny or something like that.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, because.
- 18:24Speaker 5: We raised Texas on Yeah, that was Saturday, and then
- 18:28Speaker 5: we ended up flying home on Sunday morning, and I
- 18:30Speaker 5: was Monday morning and I was back to work that afternoon.
- 18:34Speaker 2: So wow, Lie, life goes on. It does it doesn't.
- 18:38Speaker 4: That's a thing.
- 18:39Speaker 3: That's a thing because you finish an endurance event, but
- 18:43Speaker 3: you're still a dad, you still have a day job,
- 18:46Speaker 3: you're still a husband, and so like, I'm sure there's
- 18:50Speaker 3: some rest there, but there. I would say that anytime
- 18:52Speaker 3: I've done an endurance event, and I've not done anything
- 18:55Speaker 3: nearly as long as you have, But anytime I've done
- 18:59Speaker 3: an endurance event, I'm intentional, like like I want to
- 19:02Speaker 3: make sure my boys know Daddy needs to recover. But
- 19:07Speaker 3: but it's not like I'm sick in bed in the room,
- 19:11Speaker 3: like I don't. I don't have that luxury. I'm I'm
- 19:15Speaker 3: I'm actively involved with them too. I just might not
- 19:18Speaker 3: go jump on the trampoline right now. You know what,
- 19:21Speaker 3: what does recovery look like for you after an event?
- 19:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I think my kids understand kind of what I
- 19:27Speaker 5: went through. And actually when they watch a full iron Man,
- 19:32Speaker 5: they're pretty exhausted to at the end of that day.
- 19:35Speaker 2: I'm very.
- 19:38Speaker 4: All, this is a long time for a kid.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Yeah, finishing those they're they're kind of ready to relax
- 19:44Speaker 5: and everything. It's and it's not so much the day
- 19:47Speaker 5: of like something like that. I feel like the next
- 19:49Speaker 5: day when all the fatigue and everything sets in, and
- 19:52Speaker 5: really sure that's the tough one because they're ready to
- 19:54Speaker 5: go again. But those getting out of bed and get
- 19:58Speaker 5: those legs movement is definitely tough.
- 20:00Speaker 2: I feel way older than I am.
- 20:02Speaker 5: Yeah, you mentioned a trampoline. I did Ironman Florida last November,
- 20:08Speaker 5: and the day after they had this giant it's like
- 20:13Speaker 5: an inflatable trampoline things like, uh, blow up bounce houses
- 20:18Speaker 5: and they had a huge bounce house park that was
- 20:21Speaker 5: next to our hotel.
- 20:21Speaker 2: So the kids of course wanted to go on that.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Doing an iron Man and the next day having to
- 20:26Speaker 2: walk and try to play on that No way are you.
- 20:30Speaker 5: They went and did it, and I just like gingerly
- 20:33Speaker 5: walked around. I think everyone probably didn't know what I
- 20:36Speaker 5: was doing, but it was good.
- 20:39Speaker 3: What's so funny to me is is, you know, no
- 20:41Speaker 3: offense to the rest of the population, but you're probably
- 20:43Speaker 3: the fittest guy there, but you're like hobbling like I,
- 20:46Speaker 3: you know why I need to be on that princess
- 20:48Speaker 3: bounce house.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Like it just don't. Yeah, it's always interesting.
- 20:52Speaker 5: You do those big races and when you finish them,
- 20:54Speaker 5: everyone around you is, you know, new kind of knows
- 20:57Speaker 5: what you just did because uh, you know, they're in
- 21:00Speaker 5: that vicinity and they say that they knew iron Man
- 21:02Speaker 5: was going on. But then you know, you leave or
- 21:04Speaker 5: you get to the airport and you're like walking all
- 21:07Speaker 5: funny and you were just looking at you.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Like, you know, why why are you doing this? What's
- 21:11Speaker 2: going on?
- 21:13Speaker 3: That's a good question, Why why are we doing this?
- 21:17Speaker 3: I think that's something I'd like to talk about because
- 21:19Speaker 3: endurance training in and of itself is by definition inherently painful,
- 21:26Speaker 3: like painful, mentally painful. Physically, it's I might even I
- 21:31Speaker 3: might even say that it's painful spiritually. I have a
- 21:34Speaker 3: I have an event I like called the death by
- 21:36Speaker 3: five k, which is a five k every two and
- 21:39Speaker 3: a half hours for twenty four hours. And and for me,
- 21:42Speaker 3: I have an issue with my tendons and ligaments globally
- 21:45Speaker 3: in my body.
- 21:46Speaker 2: So a five k is.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Long enough that I can work hard, but not so
- 21:51Speaker 3: long that that because my muscles crap out of me.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I'm really digging into my cartilage and joints and stuff
- 21:57Speaker 3: and so so, but this is a brutal event. You know,
- 21:59Speaker 3: you go all the way into like one am, two am,
- 22:02Speaker 3: three am, you're waking up, and you're you're running and stuff,
- 22:05Speaker 3: and and it's it's so interesting. You get to a
- 22:07Speaker 3: place and I know you know this place because you've
- 22:10Speaker 3: spent way more time in endurance training than I have.
- 22:13Speaker 3: You get to this place where there's nothing left of
- 22:15Speaker 3: you but whatever is underneath, and and I think of
- 22:19Speaker 3: that as a very spiritual place. I think of that
- 22:21Speaker 3: as a very spiritual place to be what what's left
- 22:23Speaker 3: of you and your physical body is done, your mental
- 22:26Speaker 3: fortitude is done, and there's there's a little part of
- 22:29Speaker 3: you that's like, no, we're gonna keep going. And uh so, so,
- 22:34Speaker 3: why why do all of this long distance stuff?
- 22:38Speaker 2: What?
- 22:38Speaker 4: What do you think is the appeal in your heart
- 22:40Speaker 4: and mind?
- 22:42Speaker 5: For me, it's definitely just getting the best out of me,
- 22:46Speaker 5: like just to see see how far I can go,
- 22:49Speaker 5: see how far I can push myself, like you said,
- 22:51Speaker 5: physically and mentally, and then just setting the exact example
- 22:57Speaker 5: I want for my kids. Just making sure they're not
- 23:01Speaker 5: they're living to their full potential, so you know, not
- 23:04Speaker 5: being complacent and sitting on the sidelines, but getting involved
- 23:09Speaker 5: and doing what they want and not trying to hold
- 23:13Speaker 5: back because they don't think they can do it. Is
- 23:15Speaker 5: just showing them, hey, this is this is what you
- 23:18Speaker 5: can do. And I think it rubs off on the
- 23:22Speaker 5: physical side of things, but then mentally gives them a
- 23:25Speaker 5: little bit more energy and everything to put towards, you know,
- 23:29Speaker 5: any goals they have, whether little things for them now
- 23:33Speaker 5: in school or little their sports and everything.
- 23:35Speaker 3: So mm hmm, now I know you're a man of faith.
- 23:38Speaker 3: I'm wearing a shirt that says grit on the front.
- 23:40Speaker 3: On the back, it has a Bible verse from Galatians
- 23:43Speaker 3: six nine.
- 23:43Speaker 4: This is where the apostle Paul.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Says, let us not grow weary of doing the right
- 23:47Speaker 3: thing for the In the end, we will reap the
- 23:50Speaker 3: harvest if we do not give up. In my mind,
- 23:53Speaker 3: That's that's endurance training, like, because sometimes you're just you
- 23:56Speaker 3: just like, don't give up. Like I don't know, I
- 23:59Speaker 3: don't know how fast I'm going on, i don't know
- 24:00Speaker 3: where my next meal is coming from.
- 24:02Speaker 4: I'm probably dehydrated.
- 24:04Speaker 3: But no matter what, I don't I'm not giving up
- 24:06Speaker 3: right now, Like I'm just going to keep putting one
- 24:08Speaker 3: foot in front of the other. I'm going to keep,
- 24:09Speaker 3: you know, one stroke after the other.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Right.
- 24:11Speaker 3: So, so in my mind, this is a very spiritual
- 24:14Speaker 3: thing because because what you're showing your kids is is
- 24:20Speaker 3: Daddy might have to deal with a lot of different things,
- 24:23Speaker 3: but Daddy doesn't give up.
- 24:24Speaker 4: And that's that's what endurance training is.
- 24:26Speaker 3: There's a lot of other bells and whistles and nuts
- 24:29Speaker 3: and bolts and training modalities and programs and all the stuff,
- 24:32Speaker 3: but at the very base of endurance training is like
- 24:34Speaker 3: this is hard, but I'm not giving up. Is when
- 24:38Speaker 3: you talk to your kids about this sort of training
- 24:41Speaker 3: and they come back from these sorts of events, are
- 24:43Speaker 3: you guys having conversations about what it means like not
- 24:46Speaker 3: to give up and how you dig deep and what
- 24:49Speaker 3: kind of prayers you pray when you find yourself in
- 24:51Speaker 3: that place. For instance, how are you discussing this with
- 24:53Speaker 3: your kiddos?
- 24:54Speaker 5: Yeah, if you if you ask my kids, like, one
- 24:57Speaker 5: thing I always tell them is to get comfortable and
- 25:00Speaker 5: uncomfortable yeah okay, and they they've turned that into oh,
- 25:07Speaker 5: it's take the pain to get rid of the pain.
- 25:09Speaker 5: That's what I don't I've never said that. My middle
- 25:12Speaker 5: child turned that into take the pain to get rid
- 25:14Speaker 5: of the pain.
- 25:15Speaker 2: So they've.
- 25:18Speaker 5: And when they're doing something and they don't like doing
- 25:20Speaker 5: it or you know, it's hard for them. He my
- 25:23Speaker 5: middle one will actually say like, hey, my oldis is gunner.
- 25:27Speaker 5: He'll be like, hey, gun or don't forget take the
- 25:29Speaker 5: pain to get rid of the pain. And they The
- 25:31Speaker 5: biggest thing with it, I think endurance sports and you
- 25:34Speaker 5: can turn this into anything with life is just showing
- 25:37Speaker 5: up every day. So you know, I don't wake out
- 25:40Speaker 5: wake up every morning early in the morning and be like,
- 25:42Speaker 5: oh yeah, I get to go sit on my bike
- 25:44Speaker 5: for two hours. It's I know, that's the work that
- 25:47Speaker 5: I need to do to be better today and be
- 25:51Speaker 5: better the next day. So just waking up, putting the
- 25:54Speaker 5: work in, just showing consistently, showing up and when I
- 25:58Speaker 5: do that. Then it's consistently showing up for my kids,
- 26:01Speaker 5: consistently showing up.
- 26:02Speaker 2: For my wife, and then at work.
- 26:04Speaker 5: So just one, it's a piece that builds onto other
- 26:07Speaker 5: aspects of my life. And I think when you really
- 26:11Speaker 5: challenge yourself and see what you're capable of, Well, if
- 26:14Speaker 5: my kids want to play an extra half an hour,
- 26:17Speaker 5: I know I.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Can do that.
- 26:17Speaker 5: It's I did an iron Man, and it's that's a
- 26:22Speaker 5: long day. But when you get home from work and
- 26:26Speaker 5: sometimes yeah, it sounds great to sit on the couch,
- 26:28Speaker 5: but your kids are relying on you, and I know
- 26:30Speaker 5: by all the physical activity I do, I can manage
- 26:33Speaker 5: to go and run around and play with them and
- 26:36Speaker 5: show up.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Yeah, well there really is something too that. And this
- 26:40Speaker 3: is one of the reasons I'm such a such a
- 26:42Speaker 3: proponent of endurance events period like and and if you're
- 26:45Speaker 3: listening to this and you're like, I'm not an durance athlete,
- 26:47Speaker 3: I would still encourage you to go do a five K.
- 26:49Speaker 3: I would still encourage you to go go do a
- 26:52Speaker 3: swim event or even just a small obstacle course race
- 26:55Speaker 3: or something to challenge yourself because there's there's there's a
- 26:58Speaker 3: weird thing that happens in our brain when we and
- 27:00Speaker 3: this is a well psychologically studied fact, when we approach
- 27:05Speaker 3: something very very very difficult and we're successful. And it
- 27:09Speaker 3: might not mean we're the best in the world at it,
- 27:11Speaker 3: but we don't die like we actually you know, accomplish it.
- 27:16Speaker 3: We can we can complete it. When we do that.
- 27:19Speaker 3: What's weird is everything else in our life that becomes
- 27:22Speaker 3: a litmus test for everything else. It's like, is this
- 27:26Speaker 3: an iron Man?
- 27:27Speaker 4: No?
- 27:27Speaker 3: Okay, well I've done an iron Man, so like I
- 27:30Speaker 3: can do this and whatever this is, and it kind
- 27:34Speaker 3: of takes the feelings out of it takes the it
- 27:36Speaker 3: takes the moods, it takes the emotional factors.
- 27:39Speaker 4: It takes things like sleep deprivation.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I know you've.
- 27:43Speaker 3: You got four kids, man, sometimes you're just sleep deprived.
- 27:45Speaker 3: That's how life goes, right, But it takes all those
- 27:48Speaker 3: things out of it. And it says, is this an iron man?
- 27:50Speaker 2: Yes? Or no?
- 27:51Speaker 4: No, it's not an iron man? Is an iron man?
- 27:52Speaker 2: Harder? Yes? It is?
- 27:53Speaker 3: Okay, well, then I can do this but by proxy
- 27:57Speaker 3: and and if I'm putting words in your mouth, correct me.
- 28:01Speaker 3: But but would you say that happens in your brain sometimes.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah, just I do a lot of that
- 28:08Speaker 5: kind of comparing day to day and and then even actually,
- 28:14Speaker 5: like when in life when you're talking to someone and
- 28:18Speaker 5: you're like, tell them I do Ironman's and their usual
- 28:22Speaker 5: first response is, oh, I can never do that or
- 28:24Speaker 5: I would never do that, And I think you when
- 28:28Speaker 5: you make that choice, you know you automatically, like mentally lose.
- 28:32Speaker 5: So yeah, if you're going to say that, then yeah,
- 28:35Speaker 5: you probably will ever do one. But when someone comes
- 28:38Speaker 5: to me and they say, oh, you're I heard about
- 28:41Speaker 5: this crazy event for me, I'm like, hmm, I could
- 28:44Speaker 5: probably do that just knowing that, yeah, maybe not tomorrow.
- 28:48Speaker 2: But I know I could work to that and accomplish it.
- 28:51Speaker 5: So it's definitely a big mental shift that you get
- 28:55Speaker 5: from completing a lot of hard things and the hard
- 28:58Speaker 5: events that transfer over to your everyday life.
- 29:02Speaker 3: There was a Greek philosopher, I don't know if it
- 29:03Speaker 3: was Archillicus or Hippocrates, one of the two said that
- 29:08Speaker 3: a young man owes it to himself to find out
- 29:11Speaker 3: what his athletic potential is, and what he meant by
- 29:15Speaker 3: that is that that's a thing that a man needs
- 29:17Speaker 3: in his life. A man needs to know what he's
- 29:19Speaker 3: actually capable of. I I constantly find that that people
- 29:23Speaker 3: are made of sterner stuff than they know. But it's
- 29:25Speaker 3: the knowing part. It's the process of conditioning, the process
- 29:30Speaker 3: of programming, the process of of of consistently showing up
- 29:35Speaker 3: and doing the work and stuff and then accomplishing said
- 29:37Speaker 3: goal and going like, wow, I can I can do that.
- 29:39Speaker 3: I didn't think I could once upon a time, but
- 29:42Speaker 3: now the proof's in the pudding.
- 29:43Speaker 4: Now now I can do that.
- 29:45Speaker 3: So so as far as Iron Manning goes, have you
- 29:49Speaker 3: proved to yourself everything you need to prove or is
- 29:53Speaker 3: there is there more that you're working to accomplish?
- 29:56Speaker 5: Definitely more that I'm working to accomplish. I U I
- 30:00Speaker 5: want to break ten hours and just like an actual
- 30:03Speaker 5: Iron Man that's one of the time goals that I have.
- 30:06Speaker 3: Wow, that's your fastest one. I saw Texas was ten
- 30:08Speaker 3: forty five, but.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Florida I did ten twenty nine and change.
- 30:13Speaker 3: Okay, so that is knock off twenty nine minutes.
- 30:19Speaker 2: In the long day.
- 30:19Speaker 5: In the big scheme of things, it's like, well, you're
- 30:22Speaker 5: going for ten hours, like twenty nine minutes, isn't Isn't
- 30:24Speaker 5: that much knockoff.
- 30:25Speaker 2: It's a lot to knock off. Yeah, it adds. It's
- 30:29Speaker 2: the little things.
- 30:31Speaker 3: What what in your mind? Where's your biggest opportunity for
- 30:34Speaker 3: improvement right now? Where you're going to shave off some
- 30:36Speaker 3: of that time?
- 30:37Speaker 5: Mainly the bike. Okay, I can definitely get a lot
- 30:40Speaker 5: stronger on the bike. My bike's not bad. But there's
- 30:43Speaker 5: for your bike in one hundred and felve miles. So
- 30:46Speaker 5: if I could go from you know, a five thirty
- 30:49Speaker 5: five hour and thirty minute bike to a five hour bike,
- 30:51Speaker 5: then there's my.
- 30:53Speaker 2: That's all twenty nine minutes right there. Yeah.
- 30:55Speaker 5: Yeah, So my marathon pace is pretty decent and my swim.
- 31:01Speaker 5: I could definitely get faster on the swim, but it's
- 31:04Speaker 5: a lot of work for marginal gains.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not as it's not as big of a
- 31:08Speaker 3: time sink either, is it.
- 31:09Speaker 5: Yeah, And I don't like as much swimming as much
- 31:12Speaker 5: as biking and running.
- 31:14Speaker 4: That's right, Well, that's a big deal. That's a big
- 31:16Speaker 4: deal for anybody listening.
- 31:17Speaker 3: You might not be training for an iron man, but
- 31:19Speaker 3: when you look at my opportunities for improvement, you have
- 31:22Speaker 3: to ask, where's my biggest ROI orre's my biggest return
- 31:25Speaker 3: on investment, And what do I like because that kind
- 31:28Speaker 3: of matters. You know, if you like to cycle more
- 31:31Speaker 3: than you like to swim, then if I can cut
- 31:34Speaker 3: twenty nine minutes off my cycle time by working my
- 31:37Speaker 3: butt off doing something I like a little better than
- 31:40Speaker 3: cutting twelve minutes off of the grind.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Of swimming, right, then.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Not only are you working to accomplish your goal, but
- 31:48Speaker 3: you're also doing it in a way that's more enjoyable
- 31:51Speaker 3: than it could have been if you picked up the
- 31:53Speaker 3: wrong word. And if it's not enjoyable, many people won't
- 31:55Speaker 3: do it. I know endurance people are weird. We'll go
- 31:59Speaker 3: that's kind of part of the package. This sucks like that,
- 32:01Speaker 3: I'm going to do it harder. But now I did
- 32:06Speaker 3: want to ask about nutrition, because an iron man half
- 32:12Speaker 3: iron man, I mean, even a traf one. A lot
- 32:14Speaker 3: of this has to do with getting enough fuel in
- 32:18Speaker 3: the system that the whole system doesn't shut down. What
- 32:21Speaker 3: are some of the practices that you've learned in endurance
- 32:24Speaker 3: training that work well for you to fuel yourself for
- 32:27Speaker 3: this sort of event.
- 32:29Speaker 5: Yeah, so I would say by beginning of my Trithlon career,
- 32:32Speaker 5: I just I hate decent, but I just ate whatever,
- 32:36Speaker 5: and you know, tried to fuel as much as I could,
- 32:40Speaker 5: but it wasn't really into.
- 32:41Speaker 2: That aspect of it as much.
- 32:44Speaker 5: Now I know for a fact that if I don't
- 32:48Speaker 5: fuel throughout the day with you know, carbs and proteins
- 32:52Speaker 5: and even some healthy fats, that maybe.
- 32:55Speaker 2: My training suffers, but it's more.
- 32:57Speaker 5: After my training that energy levels are just extremely depleted.
- 33:03Speaker 2: That has been out.
- 33:04Speaker 5: Had like the biggest difference since I really got back
- 33:07Speaker 5: into it with being able to show up for my
- 33:10Speaker 5: kids after training, because before it would be hey, I
- 33:13Speaker 5: went on to my ride my bike or I did
- 33:15Speaker 5: a long run, and now I just want to sit
- 33:17Speaker 5: on the couch for the rest of the day. But
- 33:18Speaker 5: as you know, don't have that option anymore. So making
- 33:21Speaker 5: sure I or fuel during everything and then properly afterwards
- 33:26Speaker 5: with replenishing carbs, proteins and being able to still have
- 33:32Speaker 5: that energy the rest of the day. But it's the
- 33:37Speaker 5: especially if you look at racing, but then even training,
- 33:39Speaker 5: trying to figure out how many carbs you can get
- 33:41Speaker 5: in basically per hour.
- 33:43Speaker 2: To fuel and not get GI.
- 33:46Speaker 5: Distress is one of the big things that you just
- 33:49Speaker 5: it's an experiment. I can get in Now, I'm like
- 33:53Speaker 5: ninety to one hundred grams of carbs per hour like
- 33:55Speaker 5: on my bike. Wow, that can sit pretty comfortable. And
- 33:59Speaker 5: that has made a huge difference with just how I
- 34:01Speaker 5: feel going into the run and then my running in general.
- 34:05Speaker 5: So yeah, just prioritizing a lot of the healthy meals
- 34:09Speaker 5: throughout the day. I really similar stuff every day and
- 34:13Speaker 5: so that makes it easy. Dinner is what we always
- 34:16Speaker 5: change up, and that's mainly just because with the kids
- 34:19Speaker 5: and everything.
- 34:19Speaker 3: So gotcha, Now, this is trathlon training at this level
- 34:26Speaker 3: is a full time job. I mean maybe not actually
- 34:29Speaker 3: forty hours a week all the time, but it's pretty
- 34:32Speaker 3: darn close.
- 34:32Speaker 4: Sometimes.
- 34:35Speaker 3: How are you balancing your family, your work and training
- 34:40Speaker 3: in this way? How are you balancing that Because many
- 34:43Speaker 3: of the people that I work with, getting thirty minutes
- 34:46Speaker 3: five days a week of training time is difficult to say, Hey,
- 34:52Speaker 3: it's hard to find the time.
- 34:53Speaker 4: It's like, I get it. But you don't have an.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Option if you want to improve, if you want to
- 34:57Speaker 3: become better conditioned, if you want healthier in a fitter lifestyle,
- 35:02Speaker 3: if you want to deal with in my mind, that
- 35:04Speaker 3: you're removing your physical body from being an obstacle to
- 35:08Speaker 3: your spiritual self. But however you want to think about that.
- 35:12Speaker 3: Many people will complain that they don't have the time
- 35:14Speaker 3: and yet, and yet yours is basically a full time job.
- 35:18Speaker 3: So how are you balancing your training time with family
- 35:22Speaker 3: and work?
- 35:24Speaker 5: Yep, with my training schedule so I do more like
- 35:28Speaker 5: intensity work versus like the high volume. But I still
- 35:32Speaker 5: my biggest weeks are like fifteen to eighteen hours. But
- 35:36Speaker 5: that's you know, multiple weeks of training, so not just
- 35:39Speaker 5: like a one and done week. But the biggest thing
- 35:43Speaker 5: is I don't really try to find time or yeah,
- 35:45Speaker 5: I don't really try to find time. I just make
- 35:48Speaker 5: the time. So I know my kids wake up at
- 35:52Speaker 5: they're usually like seven thirty eight o'clock, so as long
- 35:55Speaker 5: as I can get the training in before that, then
- 35:57Speaker 5: I'm good. So I wake up at either four thirty
- 36:00Speaker 5: or five every morning and then get.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Going with my training. So whatever I have to.
- 36:04Speaker 5: Do that day, get that done, so I can almost
- 36:07Speaker 5: have two hours of solid training throughout the week, and
- 36:11Speaker 5: then I can go a little bit later on the weekends,
- 36:15Speaker 5: knowing my wife will help out definitely in the morning's there,
- 36:19Speaker 5: But just really trying to prioritize that time. So everyone
- 36:25Speaker 5: just kind of tries to find time in their day.
- 36:28Speaker 5: And I think you need to sit down and say, hey,
- 36:29Speaker 5: I'm actually going to wake up at five o'clock and
- 36:33Speaker 5: get this done. And even if you do thirty minutes
- 36:35Speaker 5: a day, but then that thirty minutes, you might be
- 36:37Speaker 5: able to say, you know what, I don't need that
- 36:40Speaker 5: much time after that before my kids wake up where
- 36:43Speaker 5: I have to get to work, so that thirty minutes
- 36:44Speaker 5: turns into an hour. And you know, if you can
- 36:47Speaker 5: get an hour or work in every day, that's that's plenty.
- 36:49Speaker 2: So that's right.
- 36:50Speaker 4: So I imagine you're going to bed pretty early too.
- 36:54Speaker 2: I wish.
- 36:56Speaker 5: Yeah, we end up I've probably averaged like ten o'clock.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Here's my bedtime.
- 37:01Speaker 5: Kids go to bed at like nine, nine thirty, depending
- 37:05Speaker 5: on how that bedtime process goes, uh, and then yeah,
- 37:09Speaker 5: me and my wife will get to bed. But yeah,
- 37:11Speaker 5: I definitely run less sleep then. I ideally I'd like to,
- 37:17Speaker 5: but that's that's my goal or my choice. I guess,
- 37:23Speaker 5: just trying to balance everything.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, well it's sometimes it's like you're juggling, flaming
- 37:30Speaker 3: by your pins in there.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Ear least that's what it feels like to me.
- 37:34Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely being a dad, running a business, you know,
- 37:38Speaker 3: training myself all is like, don't let any of them fall.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Yeah, what was it?
- 37:45Speaker 3: There's a comedian because you guys just you guys have
- 37:50Speaker 3: your youngest is eleven months. Correct, Yep, there's a comedian.
- 37:53Speaker 3: I think it's Gaffkin. I think he said it this way.
- 37:55Speaker 3: He was like, people were asking me, what's it like
- 37:57Speaker 3: having four kids, and he's like, imagine, I imagine you're
- 38:00Speaker 3: drowning in the middle of the ocean and then somebody
- 38:02Speaker 3: hands you a baby. It's pretty good. But your your wife,
- 38:10Speaker 3: kudos to her. I don't know her, but high five chica,
- 38:13Speaker 3: you're crushing it. She joins you for workouts pretty frequently
- 38:16Speaker 3: as well. Correct, Like I saw I saw one of
- 38:18Speaker 3: your Instagram things. It was like, hey, date night and
- 38:20Speaker 3: she's over there doing like single leg presses next to
- 38:24Speaker 3: the car in the garage.
- 38:26Speaker 5: Yeah, that's been a huge upgrade to just the whole
- 38:31Speaker 5: training is our garage gym, So having that available, you
- 38:35Speaker 5: don't wasting time going back and forth driving to a gym,
- 38:38Speaker 5: So you know, you're hour long workout that you might
- 38:42Speaker 5: have had when you're driving to the gym, you know,
- 38:44Speaker 5: you can cut that time way down. But yeah, she
- 38:46Speaker 5: gets out there and she's super supportive and everything I do,
- 38:50Speaker 5: and we balance our fitness lives together. But yeah, my
- 38:55Speaker 5: spring training, a lot of times she'll jump in and
- 38:57Speaker 5: she'll be out there getting it done with us. And
- 39:00Speaker 5: then when she's out there, the kids are more inclined
- 39:03Speaker 5: because we're both out there to.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Come out and hang out. And now that.
- 39:06Speaker 5: It's summer, they can be out playing in driveway in
- 39:08Speaker 5: the yard and whatnot. And yeah we can be and
- 39:10Speaker 5: they're getting our work done.
- 39:11Speaker 2: But yeah, good family time for sure. Yeah, it's it's
- 39:14Speaker 2: a lot of fun just that garage gym.
- 39:16Speaker 5: We've had a lot of time together in there, and
- 39:18Speaker 5: it's it's a cool thing to have cool play, share
- 39:21Speaker 5: share time together.
- 39:22Speaker 4: I guess yeah, no, I personally, I mean you see
- 39:25Speaker 4: it behind me.
- 39:25Speaker 2: I love.
- 39:27Speaker 3: I love having a gym space for myself because you know,
- 39:30Speaker 3: if I go to a commercial gym, my boys aren't
- 39:33Speaker 3: they're not old enough to be on the fitness floor. Mah.
- 39:35Speaker 4: I get it.
- 39:36Speaker 3: The insurance liability and I've seen some yeah who's do
- 39:38Speaker 3: some weird stuff in the gym. I don't need my
- 39:40Speaker 3: nine year old getting crushed, right, But but in our space,
- 39:44Speaker 3: you know, they're doing pull ups, they're doing push ups.
- 39:46Speaker 3: My my six year old likes to build little obstacle
- 39:48Speaker 3: courses and jump around and stuff. I just have to
- 39:51Speaker 3: make sure when I'm doing dumbbell snatches, he doesn't fly by.
- 39:54Speaker 3: You know, Daddy's doing snatches. Move but that that time.
- 40:02Speaker 3: What's so cool about that is I didn't grow up
- 40:05Speaker 3: like that. I did not grow up with with fitness
- 40:07Speaker 3: being a normal thing. In fact, as I as I
- 40:09Speaker 3: grew up, I was the weird fitness guy in my family.
- 40:12Speaker 3: You know, I made time to run, I made time
- 40:14Speaker 3: to lift, and people in my family are like, that's
- 40:17Speaker 3: just weird. But but I love this for my children
- 40:20Speaker 3: that it's just normal to go work out, it's just
- 40:23Speaker 3: normal to go run a mile, it's just normal to
- 40:25Speaker 3: go like it's normal to do these things.
- 40:28Speaker 4: That's a family activity. And I love knowing.
- 40:31Speaker 3: That that's just going to be normal for them in
- 40:34Speaker 3: their life, that they have the opportunity to to do that.
- 40:38Speaker 3: Is that is that something that you're you're seeing in
- 40:40Speaker 3: your household and that you're actively pursuing.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Oh yeah, definitely.
- 40:45Speaker 1: And Uh.
- 40:46Speaker 5: I'll talk to people and you know, they see my
- 40:49Speaker 5: kids in there, and you'll get some people judging like, oh,
- 40:51Speaker 5: they shouldn't be in around the gym. But even if
- 40:54Speaker 5: they're in there just watching me, they know that, hey,
- 40:57Speaker 5: when I grow up, that's probably what I'm going to do,
- 40:59Speaker 5: you know.
- 40:59Speaker 2: They they want to have that as part of their life.
- 41:01Speaker 5: But even outside of the gym is you'll talk to
- 41:05Speaker 5: people and they're like, oh, well, my kid just wants
- 41:07Speaker 5: to sit on side inside on the couch all day
- 41:09Speaker 5: and you know, not do this and I'll go outside
- 41:11Speaker 5: not play baseball. But all it takes sometimes is if
- 41:15Speaker 5: your kids are doing that is for you to actually
- 41:17Speaker 5: go outside, have a baseball, start throwing it up and down.
- 41:20Speaker 5: They're not going to sit there and look out the
- 41:21Speaker 5: window and be like, hey, my dad's out there throwing
- 41:24Speaker 5: a baseball to himself.
- 41:25Speaker 2: They're going to want to join you.
- 41:26Speaker 5: And that's all it takes is just for them to
- 41:29Speaker 5: emulate what you're doing.
- 41:31Speaker 2: And that's the easiest way is for you to go
- 41:33Speaker 2: up and do.
- 41:34Speaker 5: It and get them involved versus just saying, hey, some
- 41:39Speaker 5: go outside and run around, like show him how to
- 41:42Speaker 5: do it, or show them how to do it.
- 41:44Speaker 2: That's exactly right.
- 41:45Speaker 3: And you know, from me to any listeners listening, like
- 41:49Speaker 3: I'm not in that great as shape, you know, I'm
- 41:51Speaker 3: It's easy for an iron man to say, like, go
- 41:54Speaker 3: do it, but but I want you to know that
- 41:58Speaker 3: your kids will see your effort, even if it's not
- 42:03Speaker 3: hyper athletic or anything like even going for a walk
- 42:06Speaker 3: around the block or doing a soccer drill where you
- 42:09Speaker 3: just kick the ball and let them go chase after it.
- 42:12Speaker 3: Just being available and around will one challenge you because hey,
- 42:17Speaker 3: now we got a thing we have to do which
- 42:20Speaker 3: I have to be in better shape to do all
- 42:21Speaker 3: the time, which is like, that's a great thing to
- 42:24Speaker 3: have to work for. You might you might decide you
- 42:27Speaker 3: want to be a part of a triathlon and then
- 42:29Speaker 3: you'll have to get in good shape for that. But
- 42:31Speaker 3: you also might decide i want to play soccer with
- 42:33Speaker 3: my kid, and I'm not in the kind of shape
- 42:35Speaker 3: I need to do that. That man, that's there's nothing
- 42:37Speaker 3: healthier or fitter you can do than trained to be
- 42:40Speaker 3: a good Parent's that's so huge, but but it's so
- 42:46Speaker 3: powerful for our kids to see us do something that
- 42:48Speaker 3: pushes us to our limits and so I admire what
- 42:53Speaker 3: you do and that your kids are are with you
- 42:55Speaker 3: to see you, because it's not like Dad's smiling through.
- 42:59Speaker 2: The whole iron Man.
- 43:00Speaker 5: You know, No, they know, they definitely, especially my oldest.
- 43:06Speaker 5: He's the one that gets it the most. He's seven,
- 43:08Speaker 5: so he kind of understands it the most. But they
- 43:12Speaker 5: when they see me really pushing towards the end of
- 43:15Speaker 5: those races, he's told me he's like, got scared and
- 43:18Speaker 5: you know, not sure if you know what's going on.
- 43:21Speaker 5: And I did a last man standing kind of similar
- 43:24Speaker 5: to your death by five k it's the four miles
- 43:27Speaker 5: every hour, and when I started running into the night,
- 43:31Speaker 5: they went back to the hotel to sleep, and I
- 43:34Speaker 5: guess when they were leaving, he got really worried because
- 43:37Speaker 5: he knew I was I was striving whatever.
- 43:39Speaker 2: We were fifty miles so yeah.
- 43:41Speaker 5: Yeah, we were fifty miles in at that point, and
- 43:43Speaker 5: then they're just leaving me to be out there in
- 43:46Speaker 5: the dark by myself, well with other racers. But he
- 43:50Speaker 5: gets at the most of man, it's the effort that
- 43:54Speaker 5: you're putting in and how to show that up for himself.
- 43:59Speaker 5: And they started doing triathlons and so he gets to
- 44:04Speaker 5: participate in it and kind of compare what he's doing
- 44:07Speaker 5: to me.
- 44:08Speaker 4: Oh, he gets to do at seven. They have a
- 44:11Speaker 4: traflon for seven year olds.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Yeah, they.
- 44:15Speaker 5: They have like really really small ones for even smaller kids. Basically, yeah,
- 44:20Speaker 5: if your kid can ride a bike or they actually
- 44:22Speaker 5: do like scooters and some of them too that are
- 44:24Speaker 5: like really really short. But yeah, they actually have triathlon
- 44:28Speaker 5: camp that starts next week. Yeah, they do him here.
- 44:33Speaker 5: I think his as like six and seven year old.
- 44:36Speaker 5: It's either a twenty five yard or fifty yard swim,
- 44:40Speaker 5: like a three mile bike and they usually a mile run.
- 44:43Speaker 2: How cool. That's so cool.
- 44:45Speaker 3: That's well, Pennsylvania might have hockey, but but Kansas, I
- 44:49Speaker 3: think you guys are leaning on the endurance front. Man,
- 44:52Speaker 3: if you can, yes, that's awesome. So in recently in
- 44:57Speaker 3: my death by five k my nine year old, and
- 45:01Speaker 3: he caught me. He's he's a natural born endurance athlete.
- 45:05Speaker 3: This kid is going to be a monster. He has
- 45:07Speaker 3: no idea yet. He does like track and field with
- 45:11Speaker 3: his with his school, and they'll they do two hundred
- 45:14Speaker 3: meters or less, you know, like they don't they don't
- 45:17Speaker 3: run any more than that. And he's upset because you know,
- 45:19Speaker 3: some of the kids are faster than him. I'm like,
- 45:21Speaker 3: you don't understand, buddy, Like if they extended that race
- 45:24Speaker 3: for a like just one lap around the track, you'd
- 45:27Speaker 3: smoke these poor kids, because.
- 45:29Speaker 4: There are some kids who are faster.
- 45:31Speaker 3: But there's a different thing, there's a different switch that
- 45:33Speaker 3: flips when you're the kid who doesn't stop, you know.
- 45:37Speaker 3: So anyway, he catches me on the on the back
- 45:40Speaker 3: end of the six to five cam running and and
- 45:43Speaker 3: he he runs with me, and he's used to running
- 45:46Speaker 3: with me. I've run with this kid since this about
- 45:48Speaker 3: the I wouldn't have been able to teach this kid
- 45:50Speaker 3: to read without running.
- 45:51Speaker 4: He's like off the walls.
- 45:52Speaker 3: So like, let's go run and then we'll learn the alphabet.
- 45:57Speaker 3: So so I I'm running and he takes off and
- 46:00Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm like, buddy, I'm I'm going.
- 46:03Speaker 4: To follow you as best I can. But you were
- 46:05Speaker 4: you were cruising.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Man.
- 46:07Speaker 3: He's he's probably at five minutes a mile and at
- 46:10Speaker 3: his pace, and I'm like, ah, because you know, I'm
- 46:13Speaker 3: six five k's in so uh So he turns and
- 46:16Speaker 3: he looks at me and he is the It was
- 46:19Speaker 3: the weirdest thing was the first time in his life
- 46:20Speaker 3: he understood that Dad can physically not run any faster
- 46:23Speaker 3: than he's running right now, Like I can outrun Dad,
- 46:27Speaker 3: and it was so weird. He backed up a little
- 46:29Speaker 3: bit and then ran with me, and he goes, are
- 46:30Speaker 3: you doing okay? I was like, my nine year old
- 46:32Speaker 3: checking on me. Yeah, I'm good man, this is a
- 46:35Speaker 3: great pace. You keep running. I'll just follow you. And
- 46:38Speaker 3: and I had this this so this is such a
- 46:40Speaker 3: cool feeling, such a cool vision watching that. It's not yet,
- 46:44Speaker 3: but someday this, this young man is going to beat me.
- 46:48Speaker 3: Not yet, but someday this young man is gonna beat me.
- 46:51Speaker 3: And I wasn't even mad about it. I was like,
- 46:53Speaker 3: that's so cool, Like I I, I promise I'll give
- 46:56Speaker 3: him a run for his money.
- 46:57Speaker 2: I'll make him.
- 46:58Speaker 4: But that's right.
- 46:59Speaker 3: But but I saw in that moment the opportunity to
- 47:05Speaker 3: pass this on to him, that he was doing this.
- 47:07Speaker 3: And I'd never gotten to run a event with my sons,
- 47:11Speaker 3: so that was a lot of fun for him to
- 47:12Speaker 3: join me. For for a second, when you train, do
- 47:16Speaker 3: your kids take off or on the block with you?
- 47:19Speaker 3: Do they get in the pool with you? How often
- 47:22Speaker 3: do you get to do stuff like that.
- 47:25Speaker 5: A lot of my like shorter, easier runs, or even
- 47:28Speaker 5: if it's not even short, if I just have to
- 47:30Speaker 5: do an easy run, there's a lot of times they'll
- 47:33Speaker 5: either run with me. My oldest will sometimes run with
- 47:35Speaker 5: me if I'm running slow enough. But a lot of
- 47:38Speaker 5: times they'll jump off their bikes. So we live like
- 47:42Speaker 5: outside kind of like little rural areas, so they can
- 47:45Speaker 5: get on the road and I'll run on the road
- 47:46Speaker 5: and you know, we might go and do an out
- 47:49Speaker 5: and back full mile and then if I need to
- 47:52Speaker 5: keep running, I will, but then they'll get off their
- 47:54Speaker 5: bikes or that's cool, you just kind of go with me.
- 47:56Speaker 5: But that's been a big thing just getting them on
- 47:58Speaker 5: their bikes and they can run that I can or
- 48:00Speaker 5: I can run and they can ride, and then they're
- 48:04Speaker 5: there experiencing it with you.
- 48:05Speaker 2: And it's been good just teaching them.
- 48:10Speaker 5: How like with the endurance sports is like you know,
- 48:14Speaker 5: you don't need to run out get out there and
- 48:15Speaker 5: sprint as fast as you can, like they're something to paint,
- 48:19Speaker 5: taking it slower and yeah, like facing yourself.
- 48:21Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, had some good lessons out there.
- 48:26Speaker 4: That's that's good.
- 48:27Speaker 3: H I did a color run with my my oldest recently.
- 48:31Speaker 3: The you know, community put it on and stuff and
- 48:34Speaker 3: and all the kids. There was probably about three or
- 48:36Speaker 3: four hundred kids around here who'd gotten on the line,
- 48:39Speaker 3: and a couple of other parents, and uh, my son's
- 48:42Speaker 3: in fourth grade, and so a lot of the fifth
- 48:44Speaker 3: and sixth graders in this area were up on the
- 48:46Speaker 3: line and they were gonna they were gonna smoke us. Man,
- 48:50Speaker 3: he was like, these these guys are gonna run so fast.
- 48:52Speaker 3: It was a two mile run, okay, And so so
- 48:56Speaker 3: I said to him, I was like, let them get
- 48:59Speaker 3: out in front and then we just won't slow down.
- 49:03Speaker 3: And to him, that was crazy town. Didn't make anything.
- 49:05Speaker 3: So then they take off and they're probably like three
- 49:09Speaker 3: hundred yards ahead of us, about you know, a half
- 49:13Speaker 3: mile into this race. And then we passed one and
- 49:16Speaker 3: I said, see, like, we can speed up if we want,
- 49:19Speaker 3: but but I'll stay with you. I'll let you pace me,
- 49:22Speaker 3: but but we're just gonna We're just not gonna slow down.
- 49:25Speaker 3: And so by the first mile we had gotten all
- 49:28Speaker 3: the way to the front runner and this poor kid
- 49:30Speaker 3: was dying.
- 49:30Speaker 2: He's like.
- 49:33Speaker 4: And he looks at us, and he goes, how are
- 49:34Speaker 4: you still running?
- 49:35Speaker 3: You know, and like I've added him, I said, hey,
- 49:37Speaker 3: good run, buddy, and and and my son looks at
- 49:41Speaker 3: me and he goes, what's wrong with these people? And
- 49:45Speaker 3: I said, buddy, there's just a difference between endurance and sprinting.
- 49:50Speaker 3: And endurance, you pace yourself, you get some good breath
- 49:53Speaker 3: and you just don't stop. You can speed up if
- 49:55Speaker 3: you want to, but but you don't get to stop.
- 49:57Speaker 3: I said, it looks like you're friends don't understand that yet.
- 50:02Speaker 3: But but that kind of brings me to, uh, this
- 50:05Speaker 3: this faith question. In our our devotional we identify four
- 50:10Speaker 3: disciplines integrity, grit, growth in AWE that are biblically grounded,
- 50:14Speaker 3: and the idea being that that if we can biblically
- 50:17Speaker 3: ground our fitness practice, then we won't go the way
- 50:20Speaker 3: of vanity in the world, which is like I'm going
- 50:22Speaker 3: to be the best iron Man triathlete so that everybody
- 50:26Speaker 3: thinks I'm awesome, which I know obviously isn't isn't your
- 50:28Speaker 3: forte But but you can see where, especially in the
- 50:32Speaker 3: Instagram fitness world, vanity is a is a well it's pervasive,
- 50:39Speaker 3: but but grit is the discipline that teaches us how
- 50:43Speaker 3: to endure and keep going. When we would we want
- 50:47Speaker 3: to quit, we would have we would have stopped a
- 50:49Speaker 3: while ago. And and that's not exactly a natural thing.
- 50:53Speaker 2: In the world.
- 50:54Speaker 4: It's not like not many people have grit because it's
- 51:00Speaker 4: difficult to cultivate.
- 51:02Speaker 3: So so I'd like to ask, you know, I asked
- 51:05Speaker 3: walking into this conversation, what role faith plays in your
- 51:09Speaker 3: role and in your life. We can talk about the
- 51:11Speaker 3: grit thing in a second, but in your household, when
- 51:15Speaker 3: you are when you are teaching these lessons, when you
- 51:18Speaker 3: are being a good dad your kids and stuff. What
- 51:20Speaker 3: role does does faith play in your fitness practice and
- 51:24Speaker 3: in your parenting?
- 51:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it comes down to.
- 51:31Speaker 5: Like teaching them like the reason and giving them the
- 51:40Speaker 5: opportunities to be.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Able to do whatever they want.
- 51:44Speaker 5: So I always kind of tell them like knowing, you know,
- 51:49Speaker 5: if I'm not there, but someone has your back, you know,
- 51:52Speaker 5: they have that faith to continue and keep going.
- 51:57Speaker 2: If that makes sense.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the Psalmist said that the Lord is my strength,
- 52:04Speaker 3: and it is by the Lord's power that I'm able
- 52:06Speaker 3: to do X y Z thing. And that's a I
- 52:10Speaker 3: think I love that about endurance training because at some
- 52:13Speaker 3: point where you're where you're in the event, there there
- 52:18Speaker 3: is that place where whether you fueld yourself well or not,
- 52:22Speaker 3: whether whether your your pace is great or not, whether
- 52:26Speaker 3: you're in a good headspace or not, there is that space.
- 52:29Speaker 4: Where where you're not enough.
- 52:32Speaker 3: Yeah, and you have to know, like, who do I
- 52:36Speaker 3: depend on on at that point?
- 52:40Speaker 2: And for me?
- 52:41Speaker 3: And it sounds like for you, but I don't want
- 52:43Speaker 3: to speak for you. For me, that's God. That's where
- 52:46Speaker 3: That's where I find myself praying, teaching them a little further.
- 52:49Speaker 3: Help be there, be my strength. Lord, help me sometimes
- 52:54Speaker 3: I'm so out of breath, Like it's just it's a
- 52:56Speaker 3: one word prayer.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Lord, you know.
- 53:00Speaker 5: That's helping you take that extra step and keep going,
- 53:03Speaker 5: like the end of marathon and an iron man, you
- 53:05Speaker 5: need all the help you can get. And definitely, I
- 53:08Speaker 5: think succumbing to His presence and knowing that it definitely
- 53:13Speaker 5: helps keep putting a foot in front of the other
- 53:15Speaker 5: because that's all it takes.
- 53:17Speaker 3: Now, I understand that you coach individuals who are interested
- 53:21Speaker 3: in doing a traf one In fact, you say this,
- 53:23Speaker 3: which which might sound weird to them, but if I
- 53:26Speaker 3: can do it, you can do it. That's that's what
- 53:28Speaker 3: you're always saying, like, if I can do it, you
- 53:29Speaker 3: can do it.
- 53:31Speaker 4: I wanted to give you.
- 53:31Speaker 3: An opportunity to address those individuals now who've listened to
- 53:35Speaker 3: this and go all right, I'll try a trifle, but
- 53:37Speaker 3: I have no idea where to start. How would you
- 53:40Speaker 3: advise them to get started and how would they get
- 53:42Speaker 3: connected to you for coaching if that's something they wanted
- 53:45Speaker 3: to do.
- 53:45Speaker 2: Yep.
- 53:46Speaker 5: So I started coaching after having just a ton of
- 53:49Speaker 5: people through Instagram reach out, you know, for tips and everything.
- 53:51Speaker 5: So finally started coaching this year. If you're interested in that,
- 53:55Speaker 5: just reach out through Instagram. That's the easiest way. I
- 53:58Speaker 5: still have like a couple lots available. Am not trying
- 54:01Speaker 5: to do a ton of ton of coaching, but it's
- 54:04Speaker 5: just something I enjoy and getting to see people progress
- 54:07Speaker 5: is pretty cool. So yeah, but yeah, I mean with triathlon,
- 54:12Speaker 5: you know, I know there's a lot of people that
- 54:14Speaker 5: just say, hey, I'm going to sign up for an
- 54:16Speaker 5: iron Man, and that's what they want to start with.
- 54:18Speaker 5: But you can do the evolution of a sprint Olympic,
- 54:22Speaker 5: a half Ironman, and then a full iron Man if
- 54:24Speaker 5: you want to go that far, you don't have to
- 54:26Speaker 5: do an iron Man to call yourself a triathlete. You
- 54:28Speaker 5: can do your local sprint triathlon and that's a huge accomplishment,
- 54:33Speaker 5: you know. Yeah, like with my if I can do it,
- 54:37Speaker 5: you can do it. I think the mental side of
- 54:40Speaker 5: it has a huge role and just believing in yourself
- 54:45Speaker 5: that you can do something and yeah, maybe not tomorrow,
- 54:49Speaker 5: but three, six, nine months down the road. If you
- 54:52Speaker 5: continue to put in the work and show up for
- 54:53Speaker 5: yourself every day that you know you'll the fitness will
- 54:56Speaker 5: get there. It's fitness isn't born overnight. It's a process
- 55:00Speaker 5: and you just have to take the time. And that's
- 55:02Speaker 5: where the coaching comes into play of instead of hey
- 55:07Speaker 5: I want to run a five game, we don't just
- 55:08Speaker 5: go out there and run a hard mile every day.
- 55:11Speaker 5: Like take your time and it might be you're running
- 55:14Speaker 5: for a minute and then walking for nine minutes, so
- 55:17Speaker 5: you're doing that multiple times. So it's a process. And
- 55:22Speaker 5: with the coaching, I've just really enjoyed helping some people
- 55:25Speaker 5: and you know, it's fun to see other people succeed
- 55:30Speaker 5: outside of just myself.
- 55:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it's cool to see your passion help somebody make
- 55:35Speaker 3: a change that they've wanted to.
- 55:36Speaker 2: For a long time. Yeah. Yeah, exactly, in the.
- 55:39Speaker 4: Same way that you got addicted to very long range.
- 55:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:44Speaker 3: I got addicted to coaching in that way back when
- 55:48Speaker 3: I was working with individuals and ROTC. This was like
- 55:52Speaker 3: twenty years ago. And what I saw was if you
- 55:55Speaker 3: did the work, you got better. And when you got better,
- 55:57Speaker 3: you were like, oh my gosh, I can do that't
- 56:00Speaker 3: do that before, but now I can, And that changes
- 56:03Speaker 3: your whole mindset about your whole life. And I was
- 56:05Speaker 3: hooked instantly, like I wanted to help people do that.
- 56:09Speaker 3: So I want to as we're coming up on our
- 56:11Speaker 3: time here, I want to pray over you.
- 56:13Speaker 4: I want to pray over.
- 56:13Speaker 3: Your family and your endeavors, and then close out our
- 56:17Speaker 3: conversation here. So if you would bow your head with me,
- 56:21Speaker 3: Father God, thank you so much for the opportunity to
- 56:23Speaker 3: spend time with Phil today, and thank you so much
- 56:25Speaker 3: for the victories and triumphs that you have brought in
- 56:29Speaker 3: his life.
- 56:30Speaker 4: Thank you for the grit that you're.
- 56:31Speaker 3: Teaching him to grow and discipline in his life, and
- 56:34Speaker 3: thank you for the way that it's passing on to
- 56:37Speaker 3: his kids. Got to pray a special prayer of blessing
- 56:39Speaker 3: over he and his wife and their endeavors. And Lord,
- 56:42Speaker 3: I pray that you'll bless him with health and recovery
- 56:44Speaker 3: and protection in each of the events that he has
- 56:47Speaker 3: coming up. Got to pray that you'll make him a
- 56:48Speaker 3: light that inspires other individuals to dig in and learn
- 56:53Speaker 3: what you truly made them of so they can accomplish
- 56:57Speaker 3: great things.
- 56:58Speaker 4: I pray these things in Jesus name. Amen.
- 57:03Speaker 3: Well, Phil, thanks so much for the time man, I
- 57:04Speaker 3: appreciate you very much.
