Latest / Recovering Out Loud / 10 Lessons From 10 Years in Addiction Recovery
Transcript
- 0:00I thought it'd be a good idea to talk about the most important
- 0:04lessons I've learned in the 10 years that I've been in and out
- 0:08of recovery. Hello again, everybody.
- 0:10My name is Anthony. I'm an alcoholic and an addict,
- 0:12and this is Recovering Out Loud podcast.
- 0:14I would say probably 9 years of those 10 years I've been working
- 0:19a recovery program and sober. If you want to know about my
- 0:21story and my relapse, I have a whole episode about that.
- 0:23You can check it out at any time.
- 0:25But this episode is about the most important things I've
- 0:28learned, lessons, quotes that have helped me stay sober and
- 0:32work a recovery program and kept me happy and sober and just
- 0:36really important things. I I want to reiterate too, that
- 0:40none of this stuff is from my brain.
- 0:43This is all regurgitated information that I've learned
- 0:46from the people that have come before me, the people that have
- 0:48saved my life and have helped me stay sober.
- 0:51This is all. I'm no expert here in recovery
- 0:55and I don't claim to be a guru or an expert.
- 0:57I picked up, I'm like a sponge in recovery over the 10 years
- 1:01and I advise everybody to do the same.
- 1:04Take what you like, leave what you don't.
- 1:06Look for the similarities, not the differences.
- 1:08When you hear people sharing their recovery stories or their
- 1:11experiences and try to give it back, regurgitate the
- 1:14information back. I got a message on my podcast
- 1:16this morning from a guy that said, Hey, I love that analogy
- 1:19in that episode about the keys in the grass and the power.
- 1:23The keys to the house were in the grass and the power is
- 1:25within, not outside. We keep looking for the answer
- 1:28outside. And he said, I shared it at my
- 1:30recovery meeting and everybody loved it.
- 1:33And I said, great, I never thought of that.
- 1:35I stole it from somebody else. But that's what this recovery
- 1:38thing is about. We're we're taking information,
- 1:40we're recycling it out so that somebody else can use it and we
- 1:43can be of service. We can be a vessel, we can be a,
- 1:46an antenna to the radio transmission coming from within,
- 1:52from a power greater than ourselves.
- 1:54I can transmit. I can be a conduit of God's will
- 1:57essentially. So let's get into it.
- 1:59Please. If you're not following me,
- 2:01please follow the podcast, Like the podcast, subscribe, rate the
- 2:04podcast. It helps me so much.
- 2:06And that's all I'll say about that.
- 2:07I love you. Thank you for being here.
- 2:09So lesson #1 how do I get sober? HOW honesty, open mindedness,
- 2:16willingness, these are the essentials to recovery.
- 2:20I have to be honest first and foremost that yes I have a
- 2:23problem and yes I cannot solve this problem on my own.
- 2:26I've tried many times. Self will avail me nothing.
- 2:29It's worse than I think it is my problem and I need help.
- 2:34I need. I'm beyond human aid.
- 2:36That's honesty, open mindedness. OK, I'm going to now listen to
- 2:41the solution that other people have.
- 2:42I'm going to attend recovery spaces and groups IE 12 step
- 2:46recovery, IE SMART Recovery, refuge recovery.
- 2:50There's a ton of other ones that I'm left leaving out but I have
- 2:53another podcast episode about 12 step versus non 12 step.
- 2:56Go check it out. If you want to find other
- 2:58modalities groups in recovery, there are lots of them.
- 3:01There are 12 steps doesn't have a monopoly on getting or staying
- 3:05sober. There are other modalities that
- 3:07you can check out, other groups that help a lot of people.
- 3:11Dharma Recovery is another one there.
- 3:12I just thought of that. So honesty, open mindedness,
- 3:15willingness, how I'm open minded to the information coming in.
- 3:19I'm going to look for the similarities and not the
- 3:22differences. I'm going to contempt prior to
- 3:24investigation is the worst thing that you can have in recovery is
- 3:27I'm right. Oh no, that's stupid.
- 3:29That doesn't make sense. God doesn't exist.
- 3:30They're talking about religion. It's a cult.
- 3:33Stop. Be open minded.
- 3:35Widen your scope of information. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe they're
- 3:40right. That's open mindedness,
- 3:42willingness, willingness to take action.
- 3:45So I'm I've been honest. I have a problem.
- 3:47I need outside help to get it. I'm beyond human aid.
- 3:50And now I'm willing to do whatever it takes to defeat this
- 3:55addiction, to get into recovery, to recover, to heal.
- 3:59I am willing to take action against my better judgement,
- 4:03especially when I don't want to, because that's what keeps me
- 4:06sober today is doing things I don't necessarily want to do.
- 4:09But the suggestions are coming from somebody doing better than
- 4:12me or somebody that has more sobriety time than me.
- 4:16And when I say better than me, I don't mean they have more cars,
- 4:19they have a wife, they're successful at their job.
- 4:21I mean those, you know, those people that you just hang around
- 4:24with that are just so spiritually fit.
- 4:27They're just so Zen and calm. They are just tapped in.
- 4:32It feels like you're taking 10 milligrams of Valium when you
- 4:35hang around with them. They just bring your anxiety
- 4:38level down. Hang out with those people and
- 4:40if you want what they had, you got to do what they did.
- 4:43Willingness, action. That is how you get sober from
- 4:47in a nutshell. All right, lesson 2, your
- 4:50addict, your addiction, your addict brain is doing push ups
- 4:54in the parking lot. I'm sure some of you have heard
- 4:56this one. I love it because I don't
- 4:59necessarily like to think of my addiction as this dark cloud
- 5:03following me around all the time, but that motherfucker is
- 5:06there. I'm telling you he's there,
- 5:07she's there, it's there waiting for you to mess up.
- 5:11I have personal experience with this.
- 5:13It comes at you in all forms. Triggers.
- 5:15It comes at you in obsessions. Thoughts.
- 5:18Remember, when's the good times you sent?
- 5:20Your addict will send you the highlight reels of all the good
- 5:24times that you had and leave out all the bad times.
- 5:28Let's think about Anthony. This is what mine says to me.
- 5:30Let's think about that time you were alone for a week in a hotel
- 5:34room that was super expensive and super nice.
- 5:36And although you were alone and by yourself, that was fun.
- 5:39Remember, don't think about when you got kicked out of the hotel
- 5:41for not being able to pay and when you almost went to jail,
- 5:45when the the guy came up to kick you out, the security guard and
- 5:47there was drugs all over the place and he let you go.
- 5:49Don't think about that. We're only going to think about
- 5:52the good times. Your addict is doing push ups
- 5:54waiting for you. It is a progressive disease,
- 5:56this addiction, alcoholism. It only gets worse, never
- 6:00better. So if I'm now a year and a half
- 6:02sober again, that means my attic brain has had another year to do
- 6:07more push ups. He is stronger than ever.
- 6:09The good news is my recovery is also doing push ups.
- 6:13The more I work on it and the more I show up and do things I
- 6:16don't necessarily want to do. Like I said, my recovery is also
- 6:19getting stronger. OK, Lesson 3, you cannot, I
- 6:24repeat, you cannot get anybody sober.
- 6:28This is a personal journey, a personal decision that somebody
- 6:31has to come to when they just have had enough.
- 6:34You might be thinking to yourself, my husband has is at
- 6:38rock bottom. My son is at rock bottom.
- 6:41He this has to be it. Why can't he stop?
- 6:45I can't answer that question for you.
- 6:46All I know is there was a moment in time, I call it an act of
- 6:50Providence because there was a a spiritual experience and I
- 6:53didn't see a white light. I didn't see God.
- 6:55None of that happened. But there was just something in
- 6:57my brain that said, dude, stop fighting, surrender, you've had
- 7:01enough. Go to rehab again.
- 7:03This is it. Stop the party is over.
- 7:06Stop fighting. I wish I did it earlier.
- 7:08I would have saved 100 grand, 50 grand.
- 7:11I don't even know. I would have saved a lot of
- 7:13money. You can't get sober before your
- 7:14time is essentially what I'm saying.
- 7:16You can support somebody. You can be there when they're
- 7:19ready. You cannot enable them and have
- 7:22a whole episode on enabling versus support in the family
- 7:24episode. But essentially it is a personal
- 7:27decision. Somebody has to come to, they
- 7:29have to be sick and tired of being sick and tired and willing
- 7:32to do whatever it takes to go, willing to go to any lengths to
- 7:36get over alcohol or drugs. Lesson 4.
- 7:39The people who are happy and sober.
- 7:42This is something I've noticed over the 10 years that I've been
- 7:44doing this. The people that are happy and
- 7:46sober long term all have one thing in common.
- 7:48They all believe in some sort of spiritual belief, some sort of
- 7:53spiritual practice. They practice spirituality, not
- 7:55religion. Some of them practice religion,
- 7:57but they all have this fundamental idea of God, this
- 8:01fundamental idea of I'm not God. My ego is the problem, I'm
- 8:05selfish, I need outside help. I need I am beyond human aid.
- 8:09No doctor is going to fix me. No friend is going to fix me.
- 8:13No psychiatrist is going to fix me.
- 8:15I need to come up with the power greater than me to follow that
- 8:19direction. I have a whole episode on
- 8:20spirituality. If you're interested, go check
- 8:22it out. They all have it.
- 8:24It's if you've been around long enough, you talk to the people
- 8:26that are happy and sober. I'm there's a lot of people that
- 8:29are sober and not happy. OK, That's the other thing.
- 8:31There's a lot of people that are miserable and sober for a long
- 8:34time. If in my opinion, in my
- 8:36experience, if I want to be happy and sober long term, I
- 8:40need a connection to something greater than me.
- 8:43I need to follow direction of better morals, spiritual
- 8:46principles, honesty, hope, faith, service, brotherly love,
- 8:51humility. These are all things and and
- 8:53it's spirituality is a practice. It is a practice.
- 8:56It is rewiring, reconditioning your soul, your brain.
- 9:01When you want to act on a defective character, you want to
- 9:03freak out and get angry at somebody, you don't do it.
- 9:06When you want to cheat at school because it's the easy way out
- 9:08and ChatGPT is the greatest thing ever and I could just get
- 9:10by, You don't do it. That's something I struggle
- 9:13with, by the way. I'm working on it.
- 9:14I'm getting better. You are doing, you're
- 9:16practicing, not authenticity, you are.
- 9:19Yes, authenticity is important, but integrity, that's what I'm
- 9:22looking for, integrity. When you're doing the right
- 9:25thing, when no one is watching because it's the right thing to
- 9:27do, how do I know what the right thing to do is?
- 9:29It's pretty simple. So you stay sober long enough
- 9:31and you start to get that gut feeling of oh this is wrong,
- 9:34don't do that. Lesson 5 Service is the key to
- 9:39staying sober. Service, selfless service is the
- 9:43key to staying sober. There's going to be times when
- 9:48it's inconvenient for you to help another person.
- 9:51This doesn't mean that you're bending over backwards and you
- 9:53are will trying to will them to get sober.
- 9:56It just means that you are going out of your way.
- 9:58You're answering the phone when you don't want to.
- 10:00You're doing things, you're helping your group out, you're
- 10:03making coffee, setting up chairs.
- 10:05You're doing things that you don't necessarily believe in.
- 10:07Like I said at the beginning, because the suggestions are
- 10:09coming from somebody doing better than me.
- 10:11Service. Sitting across the table from
- 10:14another alcoholic addict, listening to their problems,
- 10:17listening to their life, and then sharing your experience
- 10:20with them. Not trying to fix them, just
- 10:22simply sharing your experience with them and what you did, not
- 10:25telling them what to do, telling them what you did.
- 10:28That is service. When I am in somebody else's
- 10:31shit, I am out of my shit and my problems seem to shrink.
- 10:36It works, you just need to try it.
- 10:38The other thing I'll say about service too is you don't know
- 10:41when your message will get received.
- 10:43You keep putting out that message and you think you're not
- 10:46helping the person. They keep relapsing.
- 10:47Keep relapsing. You never know when that message
- 10:50could click for them and work. I've had people come back to me
- 10:53and say, hey, man, you said that thing that one time and it
- 10:55really helped me and this and that and, and in my mind, I
- 10:58thought that that was the most useless talk I've ever given or
- 11:01I didn't help that person at all.
- 11:02That was a waste of time. Don't discredit yourself.
- 11:05Keep carrying the message. It'll be received when it's
- 11:07supposed to be received by who is supposed to be received by.
- 11:10Hope that made sense. Lesson 6.
- 11:13Recovery is a one day at a time program.
- 11:16It's a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of my
- 11:19spiritual condition, but it is daily.
- 11:22When I first came into recovery, my only fear, not my one of my
- 11:25biggest fears. I had a lot of fears.
- 11:26I still have a lot of fears. It's better today.
- 11:29My biggest fear was how am I not going to have a drink on my
- 11:31wedding day? That was my biggest fear.
- 11:33They kept telling me when I shared about it because I got
- 11:36honest about that fear and I and I wasn't complaining about it.
- 11:39Maybe I complained about it. I did a lot of complaining in
- 11:41early recovery. I still do.
- 11:43People kept saying to me, son, just get to bed sober.
- 11:46Don't drink today. Don't drink today.
- 11:49If you didn't drink today, you had a spiritual experience, you
- 11:52were a success today. Just make it.
- 11:54Keep it simple. Just don't drink today.
- 11:56And if that's too hard to wrap your head around, just don't
- 11:58drink for the next 15 minutes and keep doing that over and
- 12:02over again. You will eventually get months
- 12:04and years less than 7. There I wrote all these.
- 12:09I love them. You are going to encounter a lot
- 12:12of sick people in recovery. OK, let me repeat that.
- 12:15There are a lot of unwell people in recovery.
- 12:19They may have years, they may be very unwell.
- 12:22And what I mean by sick and unwell is they might not be
- 12:25practicing authenticity to the best of their ability in that
- 12:28moment that you that you talk to them.
- 12:31They might be doing things that you don't disagree with that you
- 12:33disagree with. And that's OK.
- 12:35You need to meet people where they're at.
- 12:37And you don't always need to hang out with people like I
- 12:39don't love everybody. I sorry, I do love everyone that
- 12:42I come into contact with in recovery.
- 12:44I love them all, but it doesn't mean that I have to go and have
- 12:46coffee with them. A lot of you will understand
- 12:48what I'm saying. There are a lot of people that I
- 12:51don't need to hang around with in recovery and they might have
- 12:54years of sobriety, but they don't have anything that I want,
- 12:57essentially. And what do I want?
- 12:59Peace of Mind. I want calm, I want presence of
- 13:02God, I want Zen, I want quiet, soundness of mind, awareness,
- 13:08mindfulness. That's what I want.
- 13:10I want to be useful again. And I am today.
- 13:13Lesson 8. Coming back after my relapse
- 13:16after 7 1/2 years was one of the hardest things I've ever done.
- 13:20I don't recommend testing the waters with your addiction.
- 13:23And mine LED through steroids and ADHD medication.
- 13:27I talked about it extensively in my other episodes and my story.
- 13:30It was extremely hard. I just remember being in those
- 13:33Airbnb's, kicked out of my house, surfing from hotel to
- 13:37Airbnb to hotel thinking I knew what the answer was.
- 13:40I had self knowledge. I was full of self knowledge.
- 13:43But that didn't do shit because I wasn't willing to take the
- 13:45action, because I didn't want to stop, because I saw recovery as
- 13:49this mountain with uphill in the snow with booby traps.
- 13:52It was just this unpalatable journey that I didn't want to
- 13:56partake in. And that is not true.
- 13:58The hoop you have to jump through in recovery is a lot
- 14:00wider than you think. You just have to take those
- 14:03first steps and listen to what people are telling you.
- 14:05Take the action and do what they say.
- 14:06When you want to use you call them.
- 14:08You don't pick up, you just don't pick up that one.
- 14:11Which leads me into lesson 9. Secrets keep you sick.
- 14:15You're only as sick as your secrets.
- 14:16So important. I relapsed because I had
- 14:20secrets. I was telling you 90% of the
- 14:22truth and I was keeping the 10% back here.
- 14:24As one of my favorite counselors in Utah said, you're robbing
- 14:28banks 10% of the time, but 90% of the time you're a good
- 14:30civilized human being. You're still a fucking bank
- 14:33robber, Anthony. You got to be 100% honest.
- 14:36If you have any plans or designs or secrets, anything, at the end
- 14:39of your day, is there something that should be discussed with
- 14:42someone, something that you're uncomfortable with, something
- 14:44that you know is wrong, Tell somebody about it.
- 14:46Make sure one person on this planet knows everything, whether
- 14:51it's your therapist, a sponsor, a friend, your partner, make
- 14:55sure somebody on this earth, some human knows everything,
- 15:00every single thing. Secrets keep you sick.
- 15:02You will relapse eventually because there's a whole thing of
- 15:05shame and guilt. And I'm going to do another
- 15:07episode on guilt and shame, but it just layers on top of each
- 15:10other. And then eventually you're in a
- 15:12state of depressed, you're in a state of disturbed.
- 15:15And the only solution, once you have all the other failed
- 15:18solution, the only failed solution is alcohol and drugs.
- 15:21You will get there eventually. Tell somebody everything.
- 15:24Lesson 10 Resentment and fear are lethal to us.
- 15:28They are poisoned. They will take you out.
- 15:31Resentment is anger that is relived, replayed.
- 15:34I have a little episode on anger and and resentment.
- 15:37Eventually, much like secrets, resentment leaves you in a state
- 15:41of disturbed and if you're in that state long enough, you will
- 15:44eventually, by process of elimination, the car, the house,
- 15:47the girl, the gambling, the shopping, you will eliminate all
- 15:51these things until you pick up mind altering substance and it
- 15:55may not be your drug of choice. At first, like me, it started
- 15:58with steroids and then eventually it LED into Adderall.
- 16:01I never abused Adderall before now I I did it was a new thing
- 16:05for me. And then you add benzos in.
- 16:06There was a whole other whirlwind of terrible relapse.
- 16:10These two states will leave you disturbed.
- 16:12And when you're disturbed, you are looking for relief.
- 16:15And when you are looking for relief, eventually you will find
- 16:18the relief that used to work. And if you're choosing
- 16:22substances instead of recovery or God, you just don't know
- 16:25what's going to happen next. I don't know what's going to
- 16:27happen next. I could be in relapse for four
- 16:30months, or I could be in a relapse, A Bender for four
- 16:33years. I don't know, less than 11 cross
- 16:36addiction can take you down another episode on cross
- 16:39addiction. Cross addiction is picking up
- 16:40other things once you put down your drug of choice.
- 16:43I kind of already talked about this, but essentially things
- 16:46like peptides nowadays with guys and steroids and Ozempic, you
- 16:50can get addicted to that. Going to the gym looking good.
- 16:53That is an addiction of it in of itself and that can lead you, it
- 16:57can take you down. It can leave you in a state of
- 17:00disturbed, like I said, and take you down.
- 17:02Lesson 12, the opposite of addiction is connection.
- 17:06We can't do this thing alone. I can't, we can.
- 17:10We need community. I need a group of people that
- 17:12understand what I'm going through and I've been what I've
- 17:14been through. It's like a bunch of people
- 17:16recover. Coming into recovery is like
- 17:18surviving the Titanic. We all just know that was a
- 17:21close call. You know, when you walk into a
- 17:23recovery space and everyone just looks at each other and they you
- 17:26just have that that nod, that camaraderie, like, oh, yeah, I
- 17:29know what you've been through. Even though I didn't flip a car
- 17:32on the highway like that guy did, I still, I get the
- 17:35feelings. I get it.
- 17:37That feeling of I want to stop, but I can't.
- 17:39And everything in my life is burning to the ground.
- 17:42But I keep choosing alcohol. I get it and there are other
- 17:45people that get that too. Find them and hang out with
- 17:48them. The best question you can ask an
- 17:50early recovery is not why. What next, what else?
- 17:55What else can I do? What else did you do?
- 17:58What did you do when you experienced this?
- 18:00I guarantee you there are people in recovery that have been
- 18:02through what you have been through and can help you.
- 18:04And lesson 14. My biggest problem today is my
- 18:08ego. self-centered selfishness. My ego tells me that I'm right
- 18:13and you're wrong. It's me versus you.
- 18:15That guy's being an asshole and he is doing it personally to me.
- 18:19My ego tells me I don't need recovery and you're strong
- 18:22enough now, Anthony. You don't need to meditate
- 18:25anymore. You don't need to pray.
- 18:26You don't need to go to your recovery meetings or spaces.
- 18:29You don't need to talk about your problems because you can
- 18:31handle this. We've got this, I've got this.
- 18:34That's ego. Be aware of that.
- 18:37That'll take you down. I always say this, but I
- 18:39relapsed because my primary purpose became Anthony instead
- 18:43of staying sober and helping the next alcoholic, getting things
- 18:47progressing in life, material items looking good.
- 18:52I wanted you to like me and if you liked me, I was OK.
- 18:55That's codependence, that's ego. I need you to see how good I'm
- 18:59doing. I don't want to talk about my
- 19:00problems. I don't want to tell you that
- 19:02I'm on steroids and trying to fix my body dysmorphia because
- 19:05that's that means I'm flawed. Gross.
- 19:07I don't want to talk about that. That's ego.
- 19:09Be aware of that coming out. Deflate it.
- 19:13How do you deflate your ego? Being of service, doing things
- 19:15you don't want to do, asking for help.
- 19:17I was going to combine my favorite recovery quotes into
- 19:20this episode, but I'll do a separate one for that because
- 19:23there's a lot of good ones and I I say them throughout my
- 19:25episodes. But let's end with this
- 19:28beautiful quote from Alan Watts. Who if you don't know Alan
- 19:32Watts, I guess he's a philosopher.
- 19:34He talks about alcoholism. He talks about ego, he talks
- 19:38about spirituality. He has a lot of books, he does a
- 19:40lot of talks and he he has a famous quote on alcoholism
- 19:45specifically. And it goes like this.
- 19:48The alcoholic is not addicted to alcohol.
- 19:51He is addicted to the attempt to escape from himself one more
- 19:56time. The alcoholic is not addicted to
- 19:58alcohol. The drug addict is not addicted
- 20:01to drugs. He is addicted to the attempt to
- 20:03escape from himself. I don't like what's going on in
- 20:07my brain. I don't like here and now.
- 20:09I don't like being present. I want to worry about tomorrow
- 20:12and I want to be ashamed of the past because that makes me feel
- 20:15like I'm in control of things and I want control ego.
- 20:19I want to be right. I want to be liked.
- 20:21I want to be loved. I want to be praised and
- 20:23attaboid. Maybe.
- 20:25Perhaps you are not addicted to alcohol or drugs.
- 20:29Perhaps you are addicted to escaping yourself.
- 20:32The substance is not the root. Self avoidance is.
- 20:36Recovery is a self searching process.
- 20:39It is a self honest self appraisal.
- 20:43Daily self examination. Why do I do things?
- 20:47Why do I react in the way I react?
- 20:49Why do I pick up alcohol and drugs?
- 20:51What is this about? And again, these are deeper
- 20:53questions that you don't need to figure out right away in the
- 20:56beginning. Ask what next?
- 20:58What else? How do I stay sober?
- 21:00What do I do? What did you do?
- 21:02How did you get through this? Can I bounce something off you?
- 21:04Those are the things you want to be asking people that you trust
- 21:06and people that have been through addiction and are now
- 21:10practicing a recovery program and spiritually fit.
- 21:14Like I said in the beginning, those people that are tapped in
- 21:17calm, peace, things just sort of roll off their backs.
- 21:21They're like walking, they're like soldiers walking through a
- 21:25war zone with bullets flying through them.
- 21:27And they're just, they're, they trust that they're going to be
- 21:29OK. Those are the people I want to
- 21:31hang out with. If no one has told you this yet
- 21:33today, I love you. Remember, recovery is simple,
- 21:37not easy.
