- 0:21Hello everyone.
- 0:22Welcome back to this week's episode of Mocktail Minutes.
- 0:25This is Bailey.
- 0:26And this is Brianna.
- 0:27This week I am drinking a poppy.
- 0:30It's a different flavor.
- 0:31I haven't tried this one, the raspberry rose.
- 0:34You've done this one before on episode.
- 0:37So I was just saying, I was like rose or rosé, but I remember you were saying there's no line about it.
- 0:42There's no lines.
- 0:43I don't know.
- 0:44We're going to go with Rose.
- 0:47Not my favorite.
- 0:48I'm not going to puke on it, but I don't know.
- 0:51I like those and some other flavors better.
- 0:53Yeah, me too.
- 0:55They have them at Costco, at my Costco right now, so I almost got them, but I didn't.
- 0:59Today I'm just finishing up my last bit of ravi.
- 1:03Aw, sad.
- 1:04I got creative last episode when we just did our short and sweet book recs.
- 1:08I did the chocolate element, finally.
- 1:11Yeah, you need like a collagen hot chocolate with it.
- 1:14It was pretty good.
- 1:15You don't need the whole pack I usually don't use the whole pack.
- 1:19It's just too much for me.
- 1:21Yeah, I need to try it I have a bunch of chocolate ones and i've tried it one time in a smoothie and it was pretty good but I just don't ever think about it because I have them at work.
- 1:30And so like my main thing I mix My electrolytes with is water.
- 1:33I'm like salty chocolate and water just I don't think it would taste good.
- 1:38Yeah, but yeah.
- 1:43I've been on a big chocolate banana smoothie kick lately.
- 1:47It's my favorite.
- 1:48Yeah.
- 1:49Well, I guess we haven't really talked about it on the podcast.
- 1:53I'm having a baby.
- 1:54I don't think we have.
- 1:59I think this is the first.
- 2:01Yeah.
- 2:01This is our first time recording after you've like announced it.
- 2:04Yes.
- 2:05The whole world knows.
- 2:06You've known for a little bit, but now that I let the world know, but mainly my breakfast has been chocolate banana smoothies.
- 2:15That's the only thing I can eat without vomiting everywhere.
- 2:18So that's super fun.
- 2:20That's so fun.
- 2:21The food aversions.
- 2:23That's fun.
- 2:23That's good.
- 2:24I mean, at least you found something that's like, you know, works for you.
- 2:27It's filling.
- 2:28We'll see how long it lasts you and then you'll have like a new interesting flavor probably.
- 2:33Yeah.
- 2:33Well, I tried to switch it up one day and I did, I think all I changed was I put strawberries in it instead.
- 2:41Yeah.
- 2:41Not happening.
- 2:42I was like, seriously.
- 2:43Have you had any weird food aversions where you're like, usually I love this, but I can't have it?
- 2:49Salads.
- 2:51And I don't really eat a lot of salads, but like when I go out to restaurants, I love to get a side salad because we've talked about restaurant salads.
- 2:58Yeah, no, that ain't happening.
- 3:01So that's really only been the thing.
- 3:04And then I hate the smell of hot wings lately, or like jalapeno smelled, smelling things like Josh had jalapeno cheese.
- 3:12It's the other night and I was like, you need to just stop eating them.
- 3:15Like get away from me.
- 3:17All the way away from me.
- 3:18And then like your sense of smell is super strong.
- 3:21It is.
- 3:22I got in the car one day he, and he was already like in it and everything.
- 3:26And I got, I was like, it smells like.
- 3:27Dirty feet and cheese in here.
- 3:30He's like, what?
- 3:31I was like, it smells terrible.
- 3:32And it's my car.
- 3:33So I'm like, there's nothing weird in it.
- 3:35That's like Roddy.
- 3:37He's like, well, I just ate a bag of cheddar ruffles.
- 3:40And I was like, that's it.
- 3:43Yeah.
- 3:44And they were already gone.
- 3:45Like literally the only thing that was in there was the bag.
- 3:49Y'all get the bag out.
- 3:50Oh, yeah.
- 3:52I remember, like, hating chicken.
- 3:55Which is, was really hard for me because I, like, chicken is such a normal thing for me to eat.
- 4:00Like, I could not eat chicken.
- 4:02and I think that has been kind of the weird part for me is just kind of adjusting my eating because I eat more frequent, frequently, frequently now.
- 4:13Like, I used to be able to eat lunch, well, eat breakfast at like 7, I ate lunch around 1, I had a snack around 5, dinner around 7.
- 4:21That was kind of my meal pattern.
- 4:22Now I'm eating about every 2 to 3 ish hours.
- 4:26So it's very different for me, which was just hard to adjust.
- 4:31And then I guess I like, I've increased my carbs, too.
- 4:34Yeah.
- 4:35Because that's what baby needs right now.
- 4:38So I feel like that has just been kind of weird.
- 4:40But I haven't had like the meat aversions, because I've talked to a lot of people and they're like, I could not do any meat.
- 4:45I'm like, no, we're good there.
- 4:47I've actually really liked popcorn chicken, which isn't the best food.
- 4:50But, you know.
- 4:52Yeah, chicken.
- 4:53It was weird.
- 4:54So then I couldn't eat any chicken restaurants that I knew that I liked, like Chipotle.
- 4:58I really like Chipotle.
- 4:59I like refused to try Chipotle chicken because I was like, if this ruins it for me, we're done.
- 5:05Like, what do I even do?
- 5:07Yes.
- 5:08Yeah.
- 5:09And meatballs were actually my cravings last week.
- 5:12And so my coworker actually made me homemade meatballs.
- 5:15So they were really good.
- 5:16Oh, that's nice.
- 5:18Really, it hasn't been any like more aversions, but I've been loving my popcorn, chicken, blueberries, strawberries are it this week is grapes for like two days.
- 5:30Yeah, it's true.
- 5:32I didn't crave a lot of fruit.
- 5:33Yeah, it's been a lot of fruit.
- 5:34And then like, my main vegetable has been zucchini and carrots.
- 5:39And the other day I had carrots and they literally, I posted on Instagram.
- 5:43Everyone thought I was insane.
- 5:45I was like, they taste like a glazed donut.
- 5:47And they really did.
- 5:50The people in my office, they were like, is this your dietitian trick?
- 5:53I'm like, no, seriously.
- 5:54I wish carrots taste like a glazed donut to me.
- 5:59They were good.
- 6:00I don't know what it is.
- 6:01I was like.
- 6:03That's hilarious.
- 6:05Yeah, it's been, it's been fun and I'm excited to kind of share kind of my journey with everyone because I think a lot of questions that we get to is just like how to adjust.
- 6:15And I think this is always an important part is that nutrition is never like black and white.
- 6:20You're going to do this for the whole rest of your life type of thing.
- 6:23It's always going to adjust based on what your goals are, what season of life you're in.
- 6:27And sometimes it's okay if those adjustments are a little hard.
- 6:31Yeah.
- 6:31Yeah.
- 6:32Yeah, exactly.
- 6:33Like learning really what your body needs and how to adjust it to make whatever's happening work.
- 6:39Mm hmm.
- 6:40Yeah, that'll be exciting to share.
- 6:41So we'll keep you guys updated and I was thinking about this because we like a couple episodes ago We're like we should share our life updates and then the next episode we're like we have nothing going on in our life.
- 6:53Well, dang it, but you do so that's exciting now you got a lot of stuff going on so we're gonna share Bailey's life update.
- 7:00So yes, having a baby, getting married, building a house.
- 7:04We're just doing it all right now.
- 7:06It's exciting.
- 7:07Yes.
- 7:07Well, I guess kind of talking about the different goals we have and adjusting with the new year coming in.
- 7:16I mean, we're almost like halfway through January.
- 7:18I feel like.
- 7:19Okay, well, not really.
- 7:20It's like the second week, but it feels like, I don't even know where the first like week went.
- 7:25It's like, wasn't a week.
- 7:27It was a rush.
- 7:28Yeah, it was a, yeah, it just wasn't.
- 7:31It was survival, but I mean, I think a lot, and it could be because we work with many weight loss clients, but a lot of people have been like, okay, we are ready for this new year, ready to lose this weight.
- 7:46And so we get started and then the follow ups questions are like, all right, but how do I do this quicker?
- 7:51Like we all want the quick results.
- 7:53We want it to be not taking a year.
- 7:58So we're going to dive into how to lose weight quicker.
- 8:01But the caveat to this I think is, I don't know, like quick is not always the best option.
- 8:08Like, yes, you can do things to lose weight quicker, but we also want it to be sustainable and safe.
- 8:16Weight loss as always.
- 8:19And I think that's what it.
- 8:21Yeah.
- 8:21I think that's what it kind of comes down to because we can really make anyone lose weight.
- 8:27That is the easy part.
- 8:28I can tell you to just eat less, do the whole calories in calories out method, because even though we talk about like, that's not what we really focus on at the end of the day.
- 8:40Like if you eat less and have a calorie deficit, yes, you will lose weight.
- 8:46But then the question is.
- 8:47Are you fueling your body?
- 8:49Is it inflamed?
- 8:50Are you getting enough of your macronutrients?
- 8:53Are you malnourished?
- 8:54Can you sustain this?
- 8:56Are you sleeping well?
- 8:57You know, like all these other things come with it.
- 8:59So that weight loss part is easy, but how about your overall wellness that comes along with it?
- 9:06Right, and keeping it off, you know, because I, you know, we've talked before that sometimes I get some pushback of people being like, well, dieting does work.
- 9:15Okay.
- 9:16So maybe in the beginning it does because you're doing something really different than you're used to, but eventually if it's not sustainable or if you're doing it in a way that's not going to be sustainable in the long run, does it really work?
- 9:30You know, and that's kind of a tough love moment I think we have to have is if you are coming to us asking for help with weight loss and you're like, well, I've done this before.
- 9:39I want to do it again because it works.
- 9:42My question is, did it really work if you're questioning what to do next?
- 9:47Yeah.
- 9:47Did it really work if you want to do it again?
- 9:51And you have to keep going on and off, on and off, on and off.
- 9:53Yeah, exactly.
- 9:55So today we're going to give you kind of like, The things that we do to help people sustainably lose weight faster with the disclaimer that faster is relative, right?
- 10:08Everybody's different, but sometimes there are things that you could be doing to get quicker results.
- 10:13If you're at a place where you're like, okay, I'm really ready to like, I feel good.
- 10:17I'm like ready to like, do some things that I need to do.
- 10:21So this is kind of a controversial topic for us.
- 10:24Yeah, Mike is a pushback.
- 10:27I don't know.
- 10:29Some people might really like it.
- 10:30Some people might be like, Oh, my gosh, you shouldn't promote this fast weight loss.
- 10:35We're not saying to lose 10 pounds in a week.
- 10:37No, I wouldn't even say it's fast weight loss.
- 10:40I just think it's how to achieve goals more quickly.
- 10:45But again, we're doing it in a way that's like a healthy way.
- 10:48So.
- 10:49Again, quicker is kind of relative, like, if your idea is like, oh, let me drop 10 pounds in a week.
- 10:55Yeah, that's not like, really what we mean at all.
- 10:58But here's the things because I think there is I talked to a lot of clients about this.
- 11:02I think there's like a window, right?
- 11:04So, like, when you come to metabolism makeover, or you start working with us, like, 1 on 1.
- 11:08Most of the time we're laying the foundation.
- 11:10We are undieting.
- 11:12We're getting used to actually eating enough food.
- 11:15We're changing all these behaviors that are like healthy for the long run.
- 11:19And sometimes that means not focusing on goals.
- 11:22Like sometimes people have to get to a place where they're like, okay, I'm going to take the timeline out of it.
- 11:26I'm not going to focus on weight loss.
- 11:27I really just need to build up this foundation.
- 11:30Once you have that, there's kind of like.
- 11:32A twist that comes like it changes and suddenly we have a foundation late.
- 11:37It's like, I am in a place to lose weight.
- 11:40What do I do now?
- 11:42And like, this is the things you could do, like, because weight loss isn't that right?
- 11:46It's we always talk about that.
- 11:48It's how you go about it.
- 11:49It's your mindset behind it.
- 11:50It's like, why you're doing it and really like your long term health.
- 11:55So.
- 11:56This is probably like for the people that feel like, okay, I've like laid the foundation.
- 12:00Like what can I do now?
- 12:01Sort of thing.
- 12:03So let's dive into it.
- 12:04We have kind of five main things that we've narrowed down that essentially will help you get there when you're asking yourself like, all right, how do I do this?
- 12:13closer.
- 12:14My brain just does not work.
- 12:15How do I do this faster?
- 12:17So number one, protein.
- 12:21And I feel like this whole episode, we're just going to be like saying things with caution because this, these are not the only things we want to focus on.
- 12:29This is like on top of all the other stuff.
- 12:32But like, Protein is going to be a metabolism booster.
- 12:35Protein itself does increase your thermic effect of food, which is essentially the amount of energy it takes to break down and use your food.
- 12:45So it's going to increase your metabolism there.
- 12:47It's also going to be fulfilling.
- 12:49It's going to satisfy you.
- 12:51So that way you're not as hungry throughout the day and you're not eating all day long.
- 12:55You kind of have these little breaks between meals.
- 12:59And then protein is made up of amino acids.
- 13:02Which helped build muscle.
- 13:04When you build muscle muscles directly correlated with increasing your metabolism.
- 13:08So, you know, it's kind of with thinking about how much protein I, we always kind of recommend to start between 20 and 30 grams.
- 13:19Now, if you're not getting any protein, if you're not eating breakfast, start with 10 grams, start somewhere, but.
- 13:26It's also going to be individual because some people, some people are good with 30 grams per meal.
- 13:33Some people need closer to like 40, 45 grams.
- 13:36It's going to depend person to person.
- 13:38I would say.
- 13:40Personally, I aim for about 100 grams of protein per day, given reference, I'm 5'3 I'm very petite, that's kind of what I aim for.
- 13:51Yeah, I would say like as like a blanket statement, most women, a goal of 100 is good, right?
- 13:58Like there are women who need more.
- 14:00There might, I don't really know if there's women that need less, like again, we're both pretty like short, and that's You know, kind of just what I go with.
- 14:09But, you know, a hundred grams a day is a really good goal for a lot of people.
- 14:14Like, I see people that are like, you know, they're sitting at 40, that's like their normal amount.
- 14:18So really being more protein focused.
- 14:22I think will help because again, like you said, it's satiating.
- 14:26We don't have a good way of storing protein as fat.
- 14:29Like, we do with the other macronutrients and then it also helps to stabilize blood sugar, which is also going to help weight loss.
- 14:36And then again, there's no way you're going to be getting in 100 grams of protein a day and skipping meals.
- 14:41So it makes it to where you're not running off cortisol, which also helps.
- 14:44So protein really does help so many things when it comes to weight loss.
- 14:48And even thinking about our protein recommendations, they are going to be higher if you look up government recommendations.
- 14:54but those recommendations are meant for you to not get malnourished.
- 14:58So for example, I just did this math really quickly.
- 15:03But for me, for government recommendations, it'd be about like 45 grams of protein.
- 15:09So about half than what I aim for, just a reference there.
- 15:15Exactly.
- 15:16It's so you don't have deficiencies and so you're not at risk of malnourishment and you know, but that's.
- 15:24Like, in again, like, clinical setting, like, and we know this and there's a lot of studies that are coming up.
- 15:29That's like, oh, it's way higher than we thought that it was.
- 15:33And we have, like, a lot more, like, people kind of pushing to change the recommendations, which is great.
- 15:38But, you know, I think people get really scared of protein and if you have healthy functioning kidneys.
- 15:45You're going to be okay.
- 15:46You're going to be okay.
- 15:48Obviously, if you have health issues, like talk with your doctor, but yeah, so if you look up where, because I think the recommendation, I know the recommendation, I don't think it's 0.
- 15:568 grams per kilogram body weight.
- 15:59That's pretty low.
- 16:00We're talking more like, I like to say 0.
- 16:048 to 1 grams per pound body weight is kind of like where I like to sit, depending on your weight.
- 16:11I would agree.
- 16:11Yeah.
- 16:12So that's our word on protein.
- 16:14Next one that kind of goes along with it is workouts.
- 16:18Yes.
- 16:18Workouts.
- 16:19You know, I see, I feel like there's been a big trend lately with a lot of clients that I've talked to that it's been a lot of hit workouts, hit workouts, have their place.
- 16:30I mean, any workouts are going to be beneficial.
- 16:33What I see is we're doing too many hit workouts.
- 16:36And it's causing a little stress to the body.
- 16:38The body doesn't like to be stressed out.
- 16:41So making some adjustments like increasing strength training is going to be more metabolic friendly and can help boost your metabolism because you're building that muscle again.
- 16:51Right.
- 16:52I think a lot of people look at HIIT and even cardio as like, Ooh, the most bang for your buck because you burn the most calories like quickly, right?
- 17:01You can go do HIIT for like 20 minutes and burn like a ton of calories.
- 17:04And again, Okay, if you're looking at it from a calorie perspective, but I think a lot of women have tried that for years, like, let me just do a ton of cardio.
- 17:13And so when we're talking about fat loss, cardio is not great for fat loss.
- 17:20You need to be focusing on building up your lean muscle because that also helps to increase how many calories you burn at rest every day.
- 17:27So increasing lean muscle mass.
- 17:30Really is more bang for your buck.
- 17:32Not that you got to stop doing cardio, but if you're like, Oh, I do a hit class four to five days a week, that's probably where you're going wrong.
- 17:40And yeah, you're going to have that stress response, especially if you have things in your life going on, like literally anything, like if you have stressors choosing to be in another high state of stress, not the best.
- 17:52So pulling back on the hit, increasing the strength training that you're going to really see a big difference, especially in body composition too.
- 18:00And I think too, like, if you've been doing these types of workouts for a while and you're not really seeing the results you want, it's kind of a good sign to give it a little change up.
- 18:09And I'm not saying, like, if you love Orange Theory or boxing or F45 or Like you're a hit class at hot works or anything like that I'm not saying to quit it because I think it's a great idea to do workouts you enjoy I'm saying just adjust your schedule.
- 18:24So it's not a hit workout five times a week Maybe you do a hit twice a week strength training three times a week See what a difference that can make for you.
- 18:32Or even just adjusting, like what are you doing around your workouts?
- 18:36Like, are you waking up first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, drinking coffee on the way to orange theory, you know, all of this dress at once, or, you know, are you not being mindful of like, how did I sleep last night?
- 18:48Am I in a good place to do like a really intense workout this morning?
- 18:52So just checking in with yourself, because I feel like, especially as women, like.
- 18:56We are just like, Ooh, I'm going to show up the same way every single day, no matter what.
- 19:00And that's not a good plan when it comes to your hormones.
- 19:05So like really like being intentional, like I do enjoy hip.
- 19:08This is what I like.
- 19:09Let me figure out when it actually works for me so that it's beneficial because just doing it every single day in hopes that like eventually I'm going to lose weight, like that's not serving anybody.
- 19:20Yeah.
- 19:20So you mentioned kind of our next one sleep.
- 19:22Sleep is another one.
- 19:24I feel like it just gets looked over all the time.
- 19:29Sleep is going to be important.
- 19:31This is when our body is going to restore.
- 19:32It's going to repair those muscles.
- 19:35It's going to get a chance to relax a little bit, hopefully.
- 19:39I mean like seven to nine hours of sleep is a great place to be in and not just thinking about.
- 19:46The quantity, but also the quality of sleep.
- 19:49Like if you're waking up every hour, you're not really getting high quality sleep probably.
- 19:54So then it's diving in, like, is there something else going on that is affecting your sleep?
- 19:58Yeah, exactly.
- 19:59This is looked over.
- 20:01I think people are just like, I'm so busy.
- 20:03I do really well with five, six hours of sleep.
- 20:06You don't, you think you do, cause it's cortisol and we feel great running off cortisol.
- 20:10Like, you know, but that's not what your body wants, especially.
- 20:14If your goal is weight loss, so being really intentional with your sleep which, you know, going to the quality of sleep means like maybe rearranging alcohol.
- 20:24If you're someone who likes like that night nightly drink or a glass of wine or cocktail, you're not getting good quality sleep, even though you think it helps you.
- 20:33But that's like a major one.
- 20:34Like, I will see people skip out on that all the time.
- 20:38Yeah, it's so important.
- 20:41It really is, and I've kind of noticed how it's affected me a little bit because I used to be, have like no issue sleeping, and now I guess I wake up a couple times in the night to pee, and it's just annoying, and I know you guys know what I'm talking about because I hear it all the time, and Now I get to join the club.
- 21:01Those are good things that you forget about.
- 21:03I don't know why I'm like, Oh, I forgot about that.
- 21:05You do have to wake up so much to be, so yes, sleep is important.
- 21:10And then it's like, you know, and I'm sure you're going to have a lot of information of like, you know, personal experience going forward about this, but adjusting what your movement looks like the next day, based off of how you slept and giving yourself.
- 21:22The grace to do that is going to really be beneficial.
- 21:26Yeah.
- 21:26And I think when it comes to adjusting, I think it's also a point to kind of get honest with yourself a little bit, because I mean, not to be like, Oh, you just make excuses, but I do see some people where it's like, we unintentionally make these excuses of, Oh.
- 21:48Because I stayed up watching Netflix too long.
- 21:51I didn't get to bed on time.
- 21:53So now I'm going to skip my workout.
- 21:55Not, that's not so much what we're talking about here.
- 21:58It's more like, well, let me give you this example.
- 22:02So I got to bed on time and everything yesterday started getting.
- 22:07Sore throat.
- 22:08Woke up this morning sore throat.
- 22:10I was coughing all night.
- 22:11I had planned today to do my typical walk plus a workout.
- 22:16I'm skipping my workout today because I already know I'm starting to maybe get a little sick.
- 22:22I don't feel my best.
- 22:23So I'm not gonna push it even more.
- 22:25I might still do a little gentle walk, but I'm not gonna go lift weights.
- 22:30Right.
- 22:31You can adjust there.
- 22:33and I think we'll get into that a little bit later.
- 22:35But being like, you know, you gotta, you gotta be the one that like, does that check in with yourself.
- 22:40Like, yes, give yourself grace to like, oh, maybe, you know, I need more of this today or I need to not work out as hard today.
- 22:47Like, yeah, but then also realizing like, am I just doing this because I'm not in the habit yet and I want to make excuses like there's a fine line.
- 22:55And so we'll, we'll get into that.
- 22:56But yeah, that's.
- 22:58Important.
- 22:59Our next one is hydrate with electrolytes or having some sort of.
- 23:04Minerals yes, and Robin was recently on to talk all things electrolytes and minerals.
- 23:11So that's a very important episode to listen to, but hydration in general, like, you got to drink enough water.
- 23:18It's I mean, your body is 70 percent of water.
- 23:21So you can imagine.
- 23:22What is like 2 percent dehydration?
- 23:25We start to notice effects from it.
- 23:27Like our brain just doesn't work as well.
- 23:29Our body systems are not going to work as well.
- 23:31Our blood flow isn't going to flow as well, fatigue.
- 23:36We're going to get constipated.
- 23:38And even thinking about that, I mean, the amount of people that say they have IBS and I'm not saying like your IBS diagnosis BS or anything, but with IBS, a lot of times.
- 23:50We can kind of fix that with getting enough fiber in adjusting diet a little bit hydrating and it's like, okay, I didn't have something like physically wrong necessarily in my body.
- 24:03It's just, I need a little bit of tweaks.
- 24:06And so there are so many people where I just get excited for because I'm like, you can't be pooping 2 to 3 times a week.
- 24:13And now we're going daily.
- 24:15That feels pretty good.
- 24:18IBS shouldn't be something that you're like, this is what I have lifelong and I struggle with it.
- 24:23I know it's kind of looked at it like that, like in the medical world, but it's not, that is a sign that things need to be switched up.
- 24:30And hydration is a huge role in that.
- 24:31Yeah, and if you're not pooping every day.
- 24:34You're going to feel heavier, right?
- 24:36Because hello, hello, you are, you know, but if you're not hydrated and you're feeling more tired, it's just you make, you don't, you don't make decisions very good.
- 24:46Like when we're tired, we don't want to do anything.
- 24:47So you're less motivated to maybe move your body, And then if you're bloated and constipated, you feel even more like hydration is super important.
- 24:55And yeah, if you missed that episode with Robin, go back and listen to it.
- 24:58Cause she does such a good job at explaining why it's so important that we hydrate.
- 25:02Okay.
- 25:02Effectively, I mean, your electrolytes, they're, they're your spark plugs to your body systems.
- 25:09They're what's going to.
- 25:11Tell your body to do these things.
- 25:12It's going to tell your heart to contract so that we can get blood to our muscles All these different things.
- 25:19I mean your sodium is going to affect your blood pressure regulation So that we don't pass out, you know, so it all it all Goes together when it comes to weight loss and just that overall health but yes that hydration piece will be important and Not like walking around with gallon water bottles or anything like that.
- 25:40Yeah.
- 25:41In general, half your body weight ounces.
- 25:43Yeah.
- 25:44And you're just going to feel good.
- 25:45You feel good when you're hydrated.
- 25:47And when you feel good, you're more likely to do things.
- 25:50You know, it's kind of like the look good, feel good.
- 25:52It's also like, I don't know, feel good, do good, you know?
- 25:55oKay, the next one.
- 25:57And we get a lot, I get, I mean, I don't know about you, I get a lot of questions about fasting.
- 26:01The 12 hour fast, which may be different than what you guys have heard about.
- 26:06Do you want to talk about it?
- 26:0912 hour fast, I would say it's safe, it's effective, doesn't add stress to the body, it's doable.
- 26:17Yes.
- 26:17With this being said, like I said, everything we're talking about, I feel like we're saying with caution because I know people are going to come at us and be like, Well, that's not necessarily true, blah, blah, blah, whatever.
- 26:26Yeah.
- 26:27It's our podcast.
- 26:28We can say what we want.
- 26:30Yeah.
- 26:31We have science to back it up.
- 26:32So it's good.
- 26:34Yeah.
- 26:35We're competent.
- 26:36Yes.
- 26:38So the 12 hour fast, like I said, all these different benefits to it, and then it's going to help your digestion is going to help with your blood sugar balancing.
- 26:46But I think What it can start to help is understanding that nighttime feeling of hunger.
- 26:52Like, are you actually hungry or are you bored watching TV?
- 26:58Are you doing a kitchen drive by?
- 27:01Are you just tired of sitting on the couch and you're looking for something else to do?
- 27:06You know, So I think it helps us become more intentional of what do we want to include.
- 27:12And then also, I like it because then if you skip breakfast, now you're getting that breakfast in within 12 hours.
- 27:22If it's not perfect, like that's totally fine.
- 27:24And some days it's going to be a little bit off.
- 27:26But 12 hour fast as often as you can is going to be super beneficial.
- 27:32Yeah, I actually used to joke about it when we had our own Facebook groups for MM.
- 27:36I used to call it the eating breakfast challenge because I find that most people who are like, I'm just have such a hard time night eating.
- 27:43There's no way I could do a 12 hour overnight fast.
- 27:46It's because you're not eating until like, 1, 2, 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
- 27:49And so you're trying to get in all your calories and maybe you don't realize you're hungry until your day is done and you're like, oh, my God, I need to eat.
- 27:57So the 12 hour fast really does make it to be like, dang, I do need to be intentional with breakfast.
- 28:03And it's like a game changer for a lot of people because so many people skip breakfast.
- 28:07Like so many people are like, Oh, I don't eat until like 11 or 12, you know, or even one.
- 28:13Well, that's why you're feeling like crap.
- 28:15Yeah.
- 28:15That's why you get so hungry at night and why you have all these things and all these other things.
- 28:19So fire fast, I think it's where that, with that being said, yes, there is research around 16, 18 hour fast.
- 28:29That's a whole nother topic.
- 28:31And hopefully we're going to have.
- 28:34coming and talk about it a little bit, but that is for when your body is in the right state of mind to do that.
- 28:43And it's people fast so incorrectly.
- 28:47Yes, it really should not such like a weight loss thing more for health benefits, autophagy type thing.
- 28:54Yeah.
- 28:55And like.
- 28:57And I'll just put this out there without going too far into it, but the reason why fasting quote unquote might work for people is because they're just eating so much less.
- 29:05If you do a 16 to 18 hour fast, there's an, you have to be very intentional and let me make sure I'm still getting an adequate calories today.
- 29:11Most people just don't do that.
- 29:12So that's not the type of fasting we're talking 12 hour fast overnight, it makes it to where you have to eat.
- 29:21A normal breakfast, you're eating normally throughout the day, you're not piling up all of your calories at night, and then you're giving your digestive system that time to, reset, you're helping your hormones because you're not like trying to digest your food all night, 12 hour fast, really does help.
- 29:38So those are our like top five things we picked out of, all right, if you're really serious about your weight loss goals right now, this is what to do.
- 29:48Now, kind of the next thing that we talked about before we hopped on, we were trying to figure out how to say this because if you know us and if you've been following us for a while, you know, we're not so much like you need to be perfect.
- 30:03You need to never eat dessert.
- 30:05You need to Like all the things that the dieting role tells us not to do.
- 30:10We're not a big yes, no type of podcast.
- 30:14So when thinking about this, Brianna said in a really good way, do you want to kind of go over the goal setting to match your actions?
- 30:21Yeah.
- 30:22So thinking about it in a way because, you know, you always want to have like a check in with yourself, right?
- 30:27You want to lose weight, but you're not trying to do it in a way that's like, Oh, I'm, you know, crash dieting or whatever.
- 30:33Think about it as doing things in a goal supportive way.
- 30:38So what are your goals?
- 30:40And what are your goals?
- 30:41Action steps can you take that support it and I think something that's really good to check in with yourself in check in with yourself and ask yourself is like, am I being intentional or am I just interested?
- 30:55Am I just interested in these things or am I actually doing them?
- 30:59Because.
- 31:01A lot of times people are not.
- 31:02A lot of times people are still wanting that magic wand of just, I know more now and so I'm mindful of it so I should be losing weight.
- 31:10Instead of actually like getting in there, putting in the work in a way that still feels good to you and being goal supportive.
- 31:18Like, are you being intentional?
- 31:19And I think I see that a lot because we have a lot of clients that are now like, They're so mindful of everything that they can be doing.
- 31:25And maybe you've been listening to this for a while and you're like, Oh, I feel like I know everything I should be doing, but are you actually doing it?
- 31:31It goes back to like the checking in with your body.
- 31:36Like, are you doing it?
- 31:37like, for example, skipping a workout.
- 31:40Is it goal supportive?
- 31:41Ask yourself that.
- 31:42Well, yes, because I did not sleep very well.
- 31:46I'm like really high stress at work today.
- 31:48I just know like an intense workout isn't going to be goal supportive because that's not helping my hormones or my cortisol.
- 31:54Or am I skipping the workout because I'm like a little bit tired and I just like don't really want to do it.
- 32:00That's not very goal supportive, especially if you were, yeah, that's not goal supportive.
- 32:04That's just you not being in a habit of something yet and making an excuse to not do it.
- 32:10And if that's what you want to do, totally fine.
- 32:13Like we are not the type of people that are like, no excuses.
- 32:15Like if you don't want to do it, you don't want to do it.
- 32:18Right.
- 32:18But if you're like, I want to lose weight, I'm very serious about it.
- 32:22Making sure that you are doing everything that you promised yourself.
- 32:27It's important it goes into like thinking about your habits you do every day to like, if you're like, I have to have dessert every day after dinner, but you're also like, I really want to lose this weight.
- 32:41I'm on a time crunch.
- 32:43I want to do it quicker.
- 32:45I mean, that's something to kind of think about where.
- 32:48You can do that.
- 32:49I mean, it is totally up to you.
- 32:50It's your journey, whatever you kind of adjust throughout your day, your lifestyle, you're going to have benefits, but thinking about your goals again, is it going to help you get to that weight loss quicker if we're doing dessert every night, if we're having a bowl of ice cream every night?
- 33:07So that's where I think it comes to when we get the question of how much dessert can I eat or how much soda can I drink or how often should I drink soda?
- 33:14You know, like these types of questions.
- 33:16Mm hmm.
- 33:18Again, it's not like a yes or no answer.
- 33:20It's, you know, whenever you want, what do you want out of this type of thing?
- 33:25You have to be the adult.
- 33:27You have to be your like parent that's giving you those boundaries and you get to decide.
- 33:31And if you are not in any sort of rush and you just like want to take the journey for as long as it takes, totally fine.
- 33:38This is more for the people that are like, I'm frustrated.
- 33:41How do I make this work?
- 33:43You have to put in the work and you have to be goal supportive because just wanting to lose weight isn't going to make you lose weight.
- 33:49You got to actually put action into it.
- 33:53It's the difference between, like you said, interested versus committed, and it's totally fine to be interested in certain things, but You can't expect to get to these goals if we're just interested.
- 34:08Yeah, you might work your way towards them, but you can't expect to, like, master them or get to it quicker, so to say, if you're not truly committed to it.
- 34:19And, because at first when I said this, I was like, how do we say this without being like, you have to be super strict if you want to lose the weight?
- 34:26Because that's not what we're saying at all.
- 34:28You just have to be Intentional about everything.
- 34:32I do this with my husband because he's a very all or nothing kind of person.
- 34:36And I started doing it, like, ask yourself.
- 34:38He'll be like, can I do this?
- 34:40And he's looking for someone to tell him no.
- 34:43I know he is.
- 34:43and that's what we think we want.
- 34:45But we don't do well with that.
- 34:46We need to be the one that's like, I'm coming to this conclusion on my own.
- 34:49So I'm always asking him, and this isn't like just for weight loss.
- 34:52This is for like everything.
- 34:54Is it goal supportive?
- 34:55Like, does it align with the things that you've really decided that you want?
- 34:59And like, nine times out of ten, it's not, right?
- 35:02Or, if it's like, it is Okay, you know, but it's just like being able to, you have to check in with yourself and be like, is this goal supportive is me constantly skipping workouts because I haven't pulled myself to go to bed when I need to go to bed.
- 35:17Is that goal supportive?
- 35:18No, is like, still like, yeah, I'm giving into a lot of sweets every single day because I'm not actually eating food.
- 35:27And now I just can't control my sweet tooth.
- 35:29Is that the same thing as like food freedom?
- 35:33Or am I just, you know, like, what is it?
- 35:35And the answer is, it's totally up to you.
- 35:39Like, what do you want?
- 35:40Because I think that's what I see people get frustrated with is like, they actually don't know what they want.
- 35:45So figure out what you want and then make those decisions.
- 35:48And I mean, for me lately, I've been wanting a lot of brownies, not gonna lie.
- 35:54But I also, you know, what's important to me is to maintain a healthy pregnancy right now.
- 36:01That is my goal.
- 36:02I am not focused on weight loss.
- 36:04I'm not focused.
- 36:05I'm a focus on maintaining muscle, not focusing on really building muscle right now.
- 36:09I'm focused on surviving the day, trying not to puke, you know, those things.
- 36:15There's been days where I'm like, all I want is a brownie, but I know that's not going to support my goals.
- 36:21That's not going to support what I'm doing right now.
- 36:24And I had someone ask me a really good question the other day, and she just simply asked me, he's like, what do you do when you don't want to do the things?
- 36:32And I was like, I just do it.
- 36:35It sounds like such a like, duh answer.
- 36:39And that's not how I mean it to come across at all.
- 36:42But it's just.
- 36:45That being an adult part of things where I can't do these things for you.
- 36:49We cannot come to your house, feed you your dinner, tell you when to work out, tell you when to go to sleep.
- 36:55Like at some point you have to decide like, when is this going to be important for you?
- 37:00And even as dietitians, we don't want to do all these things all the time.
- 37:05We just, we just don't.
- 37:07We're humans.
- 37:07We're not robots.
- 37:09There's been several nights where I get home and I'm like, I don't want to cook dinner.
- 37:13But we do it anyways.
- 37:14Mm hmm.
- 37:15Yeah.
- 37:16Or it's like one of those things, and this is where I think it's good to have a strong foundation, if you just stop kind of doing the things.
- 37:22You know, like, I'm not gonna be frustrated.
- 37:24I'm gonna know I feel like crap because I haven't been doing the things I need to do.
- 37:28I just know that, you know.
- 37:31It's like, yeah, you do, you, and this again, why it's good to have a strong foundation, because then when you do make weight loss goals, it's coming from a place of like, I want to do what helps me feel my best instead of, I need to do this because I need to lose weight.
- 37:48You know what I mean?
- 37:50Like you start making decisions.
- 37:51We talked about this even with the alcohol episode.
- 37:53Like you kind of just start decreasing it because you're like, I kind of don't want to feel like crap all the time.
- 37:59So those are your weight loss quicker tips.
- 38:03Maybe not what you're expecting.
- 38:06Probably not, but we don't want it to be.
- 38:09We don't want you to lose 10 pounds or even five pounds really in a week.
- 38:13We want this to be sustainable, goal supportive.
- 38:17If we want to.
- 38:18Put that word in there.
- 38:19We can start playing game.
- 38:20Take a shot of water.
- 38:21Every time we say goal supportive, but Well, it would definitely have to be with water because if it was water water So it's probably a little bit different than you're expecting but the idea here is to Think of the actions that are going to align with what you're wanting.
- 38:41That's the main thing.
- 38:42And then, everything that we talked about today, it's going to affect your metabolism.
- 38:47It's going to optimize it and boost it.
- 38:49So that way, you're not constantly fighting your body and having to decrease calories or anything like that.
- 38:55Because that's not going to get you anywhere.
- 38:58Not for the long term anyways.
- 38:59I mean, maybe quickly, but Yeah.
- 39:03My clip says you don't want to spend the rest of your life gaining and losing the same weight.
- 39:07No, it's the hunch.
- 39:09And if you're one of those people that are like, I'm just going to do the quick fix and then I'm going to try all these, see you soon.
- 39:16It's kind of unfair.
- 39:18And I mean that out of love.
- 39:19But yes, I mean, see you soon.
- 39:21Because that's not, that's what we think we need, but it's not.
- 39:24And honestly, I would rather.
- 39:27You truly think about what kind of our approach is.
- 39:30Like if you are interested in metabolism makeover, I want you to join when you are ready, when you are committed, when you want to put in this work, you don't have to be committed to every single thing, but when you're truly ready to learn what your body has, not if you're like, okay, well I'm going to input some of this, but also do the same things that.
- 39:49Have worked, but then didn't work.
- 39:52Doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome is the definition of insanity.
- 39:57It's only going to frustrate you.
- 39:59Yeah.
- 40:01No, that's the end of our talk.
- 40:04Goodbye.
- 40:04I'm just kidding, but yes.
- 40:07Thank you everyone for listening.
- 40:09We hope this episode was helpful.
- 40:11We don't ruffle too many feathers.
- 40:14There's a hard one to record just because we know we would probably ruffle some, but it's okay.
- 40:19Yeah.
- 40:20And if you feel a little ruffled, I mean, reach out to us.
- 40:23Like, I love having conversations about this.
- 40:25Yeah.
- 40:26Cause there's a reason it ruffled yet.
- 40:28You know what I mean?
- 40:29Yes.
- 40:30Let's talk about it.
- 40:31Nicely.
- 40:32Yes.
- 40:33Yeah.
- 40:34Nice.
- 40:35It should be nice.
- 40:36Yeah.
- 40:37Don't shoot the messenger.
- 40:38Yes.
- 40:40Okay.
- 40:41Well, yeah.
- 40:41That's it.
- 40:42We'll see you guys next week.
- 40:44See you.
- 40:44Hear you.
- 40:45We won't hear you.
- 40:46We'll talk to you guys next week.
- 40:48Bye.
- 40:49Bye.
- 40:49Bye.
