- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hey everyone, hope you're having an awesome day today.
- 0:25I came across this quote recently and it goes like this.
- 0:29Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of
- 0:33the darkness. And this was by Desmond Tutu.
- 0:36Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of
- 0:39the darkness. And it struck me because one of
- 0:42the things I'm talking about a lot online with clients, with
- 0:46patients, with my friends and my family is being able to find the
- 0:50light, to find the light in challenging situations, in life,
- 0:55in dark times, in heavy times, to be able to look out into the
- 0:59world and see the light, find the light.
- 1:02And this quote about hope is so pertinent because I'm actually a
- 1:09huge advocate of hope with all the people that I work with, not
- 1:13just feeling hope, but helping other people feel hope.
- 1:17I think it is so damn important. And I love that quote because I
- 1:21think that we all need a little help seeing the light in our
- 1:24lives, especially in current times in the world where you
- 1:28look at the news for even 10 seconds and all you see are
- 1:32really heavy, negative, dark things going on.
- 1:37Now, to be clear, I think we can all understand that the reason
- 1:41we're bombarded with a lot of negative news is because that's
- 1:45kind of what sells. And what we miss is that there's
- 1:48so much good stuff going on in the world.
- 1:50There's so much light. There's so many helpers.
- 1:52And because people tend to talk about the negative stuff that
- 1:56they've seen on the news. I've been talking to people
- 1:59about this idea of hope a lot lately, and I've noticed
- 2:02something. Sometimes when you talk about
- 2:04hope, there's a little bit of pushback, and I understand why
- 2:08culturally, hope is not very cool.
- 2:11It's often seen as sticking your head in the sand.
- 2:15It's seen as a kind of naivete. Cynicism and skepticism are much
- 2:19more culturally cool, especially right now.
- 2:22I've also heard people express that it feels hard to have hope
- 2:25and almost inappropriate to be hopeful in a world that's filled
- 2:28with suffering and injustice. And I understand all of that.
- 2:32Trust me, I'm an Aquarius. The injustice of the world
- 2:35weighs very heavy on Aquarian hearts.
- 2:38So I am with you. When things are really heavy, I
- 2:41understand that it could feel unrealistic or irresponsible to
- 2:45be hopeful. Hope can feel very elusive in
- 2:48dark times. I also know that like most
- 2:51things, when taken to the extreme, the original behavior
- 2:55can turn into something else. And in that way, hope can have
- 2:58its pitfalls, too. If we cling too tightly to
- 3:01certain outcomes or expectations, if we resist
- 3:04change, if we fail to see reality, well, then, yeah,
- 3:07that's not a healthy space to be in.
- 3:09But that's not hope, team. That's grasping.
- 3:12It's a much different energy with much different outcomes.
- 3:17And while I can understand that side of things, I don't see hope
- 3:20that way. I don't think that hope is about
- 3:22denying reality or avoiding hardship.
- 3:25I don't think of hope as a liability or a weakness.
- 3:29I think hope is about holding space for possibility.
- 3:33It's about resilience. It's about inner strength.
- 3:36Some of the strongest, most grounded people I know are the
- 3:39most hopeful people I know. I went to the Oregon College of
- 3:44Oriental Medicine for Graduate School for acupuncture and
- 3:47Chinese medicine. And a few years ago I gave the
- 3:50commencement speech at their graduation.
- 3:52And one of the things that I emphasized in the speech was how
- 3:55important, how crucial it was to give patients hope when it comes
- 4:00to their care. I said that it was our duty as
- 4:03practitioners because without hope, we put our patients
- 4:07outcomes at risk. And there's a reason for all of
- 4:10this. There's research that indicates
- 4:12that hope could enhance immune function.
- 4:15It can make the body more resistant to infections and
- 4:17diseases. Positive emotions, including
- 4:20hope, help reduce our stress hormones that can otherwise
- 4:24suppress our immune function and our immune responses.
- 4:27Another less clinical, less scientific reason that I was
- 4:30adamant about trying to instill hope in my patients is because I
- 4:35noticed that when they were feeling hopeless, and they often
- 4:39tell us that in the health intake, those patients wouldn't
- 4:44get better as fast. It would take me 10 treatments
- 4:47to resolve something when it would usually take me 4.
- 4:50And all of this makes sense to me because when we lose hope,
- 4:55things feel heavy. They feel dark, scary, and our
- 4:59hearts close with those types of emotions.
- 5:02And when the emotional heart is closed, we show less aliveness.
- 5:07People need hope. They do better when they have
- 5:10it. And I've seen this over and over
- 5:12again, not just in my patients in the clinic, but in my own
- 5:15personal life. I saw it recently with my
- 5:18coaching client who tore his ACL, and he needed some hope to
- 5:21be able to move past this identity crisis he was feeling
- 5:25because he couldn't play basketball and he couldn't ride
- 5:27his bike. For a year.
- 5:28He was really mentally struggling until he found his
- 5:31hope in the form of another friend who'd been through a
- 5:34similar surgery. But once he did, everything
- 5:37started to brighten up for him after that.
- 5:40I saw it in my friend who's struggling with chronic pain and
- 5:43he's having to use a cane to walk around our dinner
- 5:46gatherings. I mean, hell, I saw it in myself
- 5:49when I literally said to my oncologist a couple weeks ago, I
- 5:53need a little hope here. We all need it.
- 5:56And it's not just pertaining to health or injuries or illnesses.
- 6:00We need hope in our marriages. We need hope with our finances.
- 6:04We need hope in our careers, running teams, managing people,
- 6:08growing our businesses. Why?
- 6:11Why is it so important to feel hopeful in your body and in your
- 6:15life? Well, let's think about this in
- 6:18a different way. Can you imagine life in a world
- 6:22where there was no hope? Think about it for just a little
- 6:26bit. Living in a world where there
- 6:28was no hope, people didn't feel it at all.
- 6:32It would be devastating because nobody would be seeing
- 6:36possibility or having faith in outcomes or themselves.
- 6:42People wouldn't rise up and work for a better life or better
- 6:45future or better existence because they wouldn't see the
- 6:48point of it. There would be a lot less action
- 6:51because people wouldn't feel motivated to work for their
- 6:53dreams. Why would they?
- 6:55There's no hope there. And we as humans would just feel
- 6:58a lot heavier because in the face of a challenge, we'd have
- 7:02nothing to help us see beyond the challenge and see a
- 7:06different future, a better future.
- 7:08It's a really scary situation to think about a world with 0 hope.
- 7:12And that's why I don't listen to the naysayers.
- 7:15I don't subscribe to the idea of not wanting to get my hopes up
- 7:20because I don't want to live a life where there is no hope.
- 7:23I see too many reasons to invest in hope as much as I can.
- 7:26Because if I look at my life experiences, what I realized is
- 7:30that hope is what helped me navigate the uncertainty in my
- 7:33life and allowed me to take the risks that I needed to take and
- 7:36see possibility when everything was so foggy.
- 7:40It's given me strength. I've never felt like it was my
- 7:43weakness to be hopeful, and I've had a lot of reasons to choose
- 7:47despair. I could have gone that direction
- 7:50so many times. But I want to believe in change.
- 7:54I want to believe that something different is possible, even in
- 7:57the dark moments. And that takes strength and
- 7:59courage. Strength and courage, That
- 8:01doesn't feel like weakness to me.
- 8:03Hope is often what gets me into action.
- 8:05I do things when I believe that I'm capable of creating
- 8:08something better. And it's also forced me to
- 8:11expand my perspective, see new opportunities and solutions in
- 8:15different ways. It's made some of my heavier,
- 8:18darker circumstances in life feel much more tolerable, much
- 8:23lighter. And I don't know about you, but
- 8:25I don't like to sit in the darkness.
- 8:26And so I reach for hope in those moments.
- 8:29Hope is the light. It's certainly not denial of
- 8:32what is here. It doesn't mean that you're
- 8:34ignoring reality. It just means that despite your
- 8:37circumstances, you can believe that a different reality is
- 8:40possible. Change is possible, healing is
- 8:43possible, new beginnings are possible, and hope shows up in
- 8:47all different forms. It might be the husband and the
- 8:50wife who says I'm willing to go to counseling together.
- 8:52I want to work things out. It might be someone saying I'm
- 8:55going to help you with this problem that you're having.
- 8:58It might be a trainer or a coach who's training someone out of an
- 9:01injury. It might come in the form of
- 9:04your faith, whatever your faith is.
- 9:07I find that there's a lot of hope in nature.
- 9:09The resilience and the wisdom and the calmness of nature and
- 9:13even just being the one to say I'm hopeful.
- 9:16That in and of itself inspires hope in the person listening.
- 9:21You know, like most things in life, I think that I've had to
- 9:24practice being hopeful. We talk a lot about questioning
- 9:27our stories, the stories that we have in our head about life and
- 9:31people and situations, questioning your negative
- 9:34assumptions about things, changing your perspective, and
- 9:37instead choosing to be hopeful. You know, that doesn't come
- 9:41naturally all the time, but you can put in the reps just like
- 9:45anything else. I mentioned earlier that I think
- 9:49fear and negativity can close down the heart.
- 9:51I've seen this in a lot of people and it scares me because
- 9:55when the heart is closed, when it's kind of shut down, it's
- 9:59much harder to reach people. But hope, Hope is one of those
- 10:04things that can open the heart back up.
- 10:06And when we can live life with an open heart, God, we just
- 10:09experience so much more of what we want.
- 10:12We can have a much more profound impact, impact on our inner
- 10:17circle, on our community, our friends and our family, but also
- 10:20impact on ourselves. Because when you are ready to
- 10:24impact, when you are right there, that means by proxy your
- 10:27life is up, leveling right along with you.
- 10:30And that's what we all want. We want the ability to be the
- 10:34creator of our own life, to be the designer, to be able to
- 10:37reach those milestones that we set for ourselves and get to the
- 10:40achievements, to have the relationships, to travel, to
- 10:44create safety and security for ourselves, to feel peace and joy
- 10:47and excitement and appreciation. Hope can be such a powerful
- 10:51gateway to all of that. So my challenge to you this week
- 10:55is simply to start putting in the reps see where you can
- 10:59infuse a little bit more hope in your own life.
- 11:01And then also see if you could be the hope for someone else.
- 11:04It doesn't take much energy from you, but God, it gives so much
- 11:08to other people. So that's all for today.
