- 0:36This is the Mark Harps podcast. We are RBSN and we are a team of
- 0:40dietitians and we talk every Thursday about sports nutrition
- 0:43for the girlies. On today's episode, we're
- 0:45actually talking about what drives us bananas.
- 0:46So talking through the fueling misinformation, myths and things
- 0:50that we saw online or just out in the wild, that absolutely
- 0:53drove us bananas. Before we get into today's
- 0:55episode, we are going to do our high and low, so sharing just a
- 0:57little bit about our week. The good.
- 0:59And the parts. We wish have gone.
- 1:00A little bit. Differently, as always.
- 1:01Riley, can you kick us off? Yes.
- 1:02I love what drives us bananas episode gonna start off with my
- 1:05high for this week. So this past weekend I actually
- 1:08did a trail race. I think I shared about it on the
- 1:10last podcast. I also shared a little bit about
- 1:12it on Instagram. But my big will win from the
- 1:15race was practicing my fueling strategy.
- 1:18I've been just so excited about it and then nobody around me
- 1:22cares like nobody understands. So I'm gonna share it with you
- 1:25all because I'm really excited. I tried something new during my
- 1:29trail run. I did 10 grams of carbohydrates
- 1:32per mile. I like rotated between Swedish
- 1:34Fish and like the Noog's gummies, I actually have them
- 1:37right here because I was showing them to a client.
- 1:38But I actually really liked this strategy.
- 1:42And I know a lot of people out there think I'm crazy because I
- 1:45like to chew things. I'm doing a gummy versus a gel,
- 1:48but it actually worked out really well for me.
- 1:49I got it in about 160 grams of carbs in 163 minutes.
- 1:53Oh my gosh, amazing thank. You.
- 1:55I know you understand. Everyone please take note of
- 1:58this and know that like, if they're there is one thing to
- 2:01take away from it, it is that not every fueling strategy needs
- 2:04to work for you. You just need to find one that
- 2:06does. And it might look different from
- 2:08what everyone else around you is doing.
- 2:10And that's exactly what you did. Is that like, you know, gels
- 2:12don't traditionally work well for you.
- 2:14So you found something that did and now you have like a great
- 2:17base going into New York City Marathon with like knowing what
- 2:19you can do to successfully fuel all 26.2.
- 2:23I'm pumped. I think it's really interesting
- 2:25that you bring up that point about how everybody's different.
- 2:28I was talking about this yesterday, actually.
- 2:29What a girl in our period recovery program.
- 2:31And we were talking about how it can feel sometimes, like
- 2:34intimidating when you show up to training or show up to practice
- 2:37and you have your feeling strategy down, right?
- 2:40Like I was joking. Like I showed up with 200 grams
- 2:42of carbohydrates, a liter and a half of water on me.
- 2:44I have all my sodium on me and like, I'm ready to go.
- 2:47And the people around me, like have nothing.
- 2:48Like they have nothing. And I'm like taking this
- 2:51obviously probably way too seriously.
- 2:53But you know, she was sharing that, you know, when she shows
- 2:55up to practice, like she always has snacks or the girls on her
- 2:58team are like, Oh, well, you know, Blank always has a snack,
- 3:01like if you get hungry. And I just think that it can
- 3:03sometimes be a little intimidating, like showing up
- 3:06and having your fueling strategy down and it might look different
- 3:09from somebody else's. So not a high.
- 3:11Just had to add some nutrition in there.
- 3:13My low this week, I don't know if it's technically a low, but
- 3:16it's a little bit of a funny story.
- 3:18And Charlie is my daughter. She's about 20 months now, which
- 3:22is crazy. She's coming into her
- 3:23personality, which is amazing. But girlfriend definitely has a
- 3:27dude. She definitely has SAS and I am
- 3:31not ready for it. I am not ready for it.
- 3:33She will come up to me and be like all done, mom, mom and just
- 3:37walk away. I'm like, thank you, thank you.
- 3:39I kind of love her attitude. This is great.
- 3:42Every time I wake her up in the morning she goes first thing,
- 3:45bye. I'm like.
- 3:47I'm not done sleeping. No, get out of here.
- 3:49Bye mom. Mom, I'm like, OK.
- 3:51Oh my God, that's. So.
- 3:52Funny. Yeah.
- 3:53So I'm in trouble. How are you?
- 3:54How's your week going? My week is great.
- 3:56My high is that obviously. Like I've been sharing on this
- 3:58podcast for so long now, I. Took a.
- 4:00Little bit of time away from running.
- 4:02But I successfully ran. Back-to-back days without any.
- 4:06Issues obviously like. After I'm done, my hamstring
- 4:08like feels a little spicy for sure, but this was the first
- 4:11time in a really long time that I've run back-to-back days,
- 4:12which was like a huge win for me.
- 4:14So I'm super excited about that. Obviously, I'm not like at the
- 4:17green light to like go out and sign up for a race or anything
- 4:20like that, despite the fact that this is kind of race season in
- 4:22Arizona. But like I'm really excited to
- 4:24be at a point that feels so much more comfortable than it did a
- 4:27couple of months ago. So my low actually happened this
- 4:30past weekend as well. We were doing some yard work.
- 4:33We're new homeowners and it's always something that we seem to
- 4:36be doing nowadays. We've joked about this before,
- 4:38but we were cleaning some things out and I just looked over at
- 4:42the corner of our garage and there was the biggest Black
- 4:44Widow spider and I just have a. 0 tolerance policy with those
- 4:48who are inhabiting my house and not paying rent.
- 4:51And so it had to go. Like I think about it way too
- 4:54much now. What's up with the bugs in
- 4:55Arizona I. Told you I'm not right with I'm
- 4:57not right with the Animal Planet right now it's.
- 4:59Not one with nature. I'm not, it's not right, but
- 5:02yeah. Just I had them in my house in
- 5:04Colorado, but I was like younger and my parents were there to
- 5:06take care of it. But like it was the first time I
- 5:07had to do something about. It I was like I need to call the
- 5:10exterminator and burn the house down.
- 5:11Sells the house immediately. This for sale. $2.00 just
- 5:16someone come, come take it. Oh my gosh, yeah.
- 5:18Exactly. I'm really excited.
- 5:20For today's episode though, and I'm really excited that Lily is
- 5:23joining us too. If you're new to the Emark Harps
- 5:25podcast, welcome. We're so excited for you to be.
- 5:26Here I'm Jenna and I'm one of the dietitians at RBSN and I
- 5:29work primary with our endurance athletes, our runners.
- 5:32I'm so excited to talk with the RBSN team today about what
- 5:35drives us bananas. Thanks for having.
- 5:36Me, Jenna and Riley, I'm so excited to be here.
- 5:39My name's Lily. If we haven't met yet, I'm one
- 5:41of the newest performance dietitians at RBSN and I work
- 5:44primarily with our post grad active girlies as well as our
- 5:48CrossFit and High Rocks athletes.
- 5:50And I'm Riley. I work with our team sport
- 5:53athletes, so specifically lacrosse, SoC or basketball,
- 5:55field hockey. And I also work with our, you
- 5:58know, retired athletes and postpartum athletes.
- 6:00OK, who's gonna kick us off today on what drives us Bananas?
- 6:03I. Will go first since it's my
- 6:04first what drives us bananas. I I'm ready to go.
- 6:07OK, I'm. Excited.
- 6:08Really. So I I am also recently post
- 6:13grad and just moved to a new area, am looking for ways of
- 6:18movement that I'm excited to get into and that has turned into me
- 6:21going to fitness classes. I can't believe how often
- 6:25fitness class instructors talk about our bodies, earning food
- 6:29and all of those things. It makes me cringe every single
- 6:32time. It's set.
- 6:33So that's what is driving me bananas right now.
- 6:36I find it absolutely wild that we still have people out there
- 6:40that talk about exercise to earn food.
- 6:42Like our bodies don't need to earn food.
- 6:44Like, are we still misunderstanding the fact that
- 6:47like bodies in general need fuel to just exist?
- 6:50Yeah, like after a Football Sunday, someone being like
- 6:54you're working off all the food that you ate during the football
- 6:56game. Like no, that's not how this.
- 6:59Works. I'm actually so glad that you
- 7:00brought this up. I got some like workout, like
- 7:03the loop bands, you know, like those little the loop bands and
- 7:07on the back there's this huge sticker that's like a bad
- 7:10workout is better than no workout.
- 7:12And I'm like, I'm even like these bands are even getting
- 7:14infiltrated by like diet and baldness culture.
- 7:17And I just, I couldn't, I couldn't even deal with it.
- 7:19It's everywhere. It's so insane.
- 7:21One day maybe say something but I get too scared so.
- 7:25Have you ever been to a fitness class where a fitness instructor
- 7:28has said something positive about nutrition or feeling your
- 7:30body? Not that I can think of.
- 7:33I feel like the best that we get is when they don't say anything
- 7:36at all about nutrition in our bodies.
- 7:38I've been to 1. I know, I know.
- 7:41And she was like very encouraging, like after the
- 7:43class, she was like, remember after you finished today's
- 7:45class, like you have to refuel your body.
- 7:47I don't remember exactly what she said, but it was like a very
- 7:49positive thing. But it wasn't like a specific
- 7:52recommendation of like you need to get 20 grams of protein
- 7:54within 20 minutes or anything like that.
- 7:56It was just like, remember to refuel afterwards.
- 7:58Like what you did was hard and you need to fuel your body.
- 8:00And I was like, that's probably one of the best ones I've ever
- 8:02heard. So I guess there are some good
- 8:04ones out there, which is a good take away.
- 8:06We'll spin that positive, yes. For sure.
- 8:08Riley, what's driving you bananas this week?
- 8:10So it kind of actually has to do with bananas.
- 8:12Coincidentally, one of my clients, I promised her I would
- 8:16use this as a what drives us bananas because she is now
- 8:20looking for information online that's driving her banana so she
- 8:23can report back so we can talk about it.
- 8:25So I promised I would share about this.
- 8:27She shared with me this man and there's there's multiple people
- 8:31out there, there's probably thousands of accounts doing
- 8:33this, but he is on the no protein diet.
- 8:35He all needs fruit. What with all of these different
- 8:38types? OK, let's really quickly recap.
- 8:42We have 6 essential nutrients. Riley, do you mind defining what
- 8:45that means? Essential nutrients are
- 8:48nutrients that your body needs that you have to get through an
- 8:52outside source. And we have six of them, right?
- 8:54We have carbohydrates, we have proteins, we have fats.
- 8:56Those are our macro nutrients. Then we have vitamins, minerals,
- 8:59and water. And we need all six of these for
- 9:01our bodies to efficiently work and to be optimized, even if
- 9:06we're not even looking at athletic performance when we're
- 9:08just looking at health. When we're looking at someone
- 9:10who's non athletic or not involved in sport competitively,
- 9:14it's still important for somebody to get all sex
- 9:16essential nutrients. Oh, Jenna, it gets even worse.
- 9:18And I I called you out specifically because this man is
- 9:21a runner. Oh no.
- 9:22Oh no. And he has a six pack and he
- 9:24talks about how his non protein diet is what got him a six pack
- 9:28and allows him to run fast. OK, running dietitian, how do we
- 9:32feel about this? OK, I have a lot of thoughts,
- 9:35but I'm just going to start with this.
- 9:37As a dietitian that works primarily with our endurance
- 9:39athletes, I am talking about carbohydrates quite a bit, but
- 9:42that doesn't mean that I am neglecting looking at the other
- 9:46essential nutrients that are important for all people and
- 9:49runners too. Protein is still important as a
- 9:52runner and as an. Athlete to have.
- 9:54Part of your fueling plan. Does he eat vegetables at all?
- 9:57Is it just fruit? It's just fruit.
- 9:59I'm not, I'm not lying where this man, I watched him because
- 10:02I was like so enthralled with his content.
- 10:04And I'm like, I'm part of the problem.
- 10:05But I, you know, we have to stay up to date with it.
- 10:07This man ate 12 Peaches. I'm really worried about his.
- 10:10GI to be thoroughly. Honest, like what's what?
- 10:13Like I have so many questions about things and obviously like
- 10:16we don't know what's going on behind the scenes as far as like
- 10:18what his lab results are, what his GI does actually look like
- 10:21and things like that. But.
- 10:21From a very surface. Level.
- 10:23I am very concerned about that being being all that we eat.
- 10:26Also like how confusing is it as a consumer because you have
- 10:30people on the Internet who are like only eating meat, only
- 10:33eating butter, only eating fruit and they all are telling you
- 10:36that this is the best way to fuel your body and they all have
- 10:386 packs and everybody's confused.
- 10:40That's so true because like, who do you believe?
- 10:43And every single one of those people that has their specific
- 10:45diet that they're saying is the best one is selling their
- 10:49physique as the, you know, poster or the sales pitch for
- 10:53that specific type of fueling, right?
- 10:55Like he's using his six. Pack to be like if you.
- 10:57Eat like me, you will look like me.
- 10:59And that's completely false. Like we know, we've talked about
- 11:02it a million times. Like if the three of us were to
- 11:04fuel the exact same way, we would still look different.
- 11:07And so we can't just take someone else's fueling patterns,
- 11:10apply them to ourselves, and then expect that we then look
- 11:13like that person. Like that's.
- 11:15It's that's not how. That's not how things work.
- 11:17That's not Oh I. Hate that I think I hate.
- 11:19That and I'm not saying his name because I don't want to give him
- 11:22credit, but I just, it's just so confusing out there, especially
- 11:25on social media now, like who to trust, who to listen to.
- 11:28But I do think a big red flag out there when you are looking
- 11:31at nutrition information and if it is a credible source, if
- 11:34somebody is selling you on only a singular supplement or a
- 11:37singular food group or a singular food item or is
- 11:40promising results so that you look like them, right?
- 11:43Because again, as dietitians, our goal isn't to make you look
- 11:46like us, it's to make you the best version of yourself. 100%
- 11:49anytime that a fueling pattern feels too restrictive, it.
- 11:53Usually is Amen I've seen. A lot of people that do stuff
- 11:56like that where they're like I only eat vegetables or I only
- 11:59eat fruit. It's like taking the, you know,
- 12:01plant based diet to an extreme. I do think it's funny though.
- 12:04Not funny, it's not. This is not funny at all.
- 12:06This is why driving bananas. But if you actually look at like
- 12:10the macro nutrients, like if you ate 12 Peaches, like you are
- 12:13going to at least probably get 3 to 4 grams of protein.
- 12:15Like you cannot say that's a no protein diet because everything
- 12:18does contain probably a little bit of protein.
- 12:20You just have to eat 12 Peaches to get 5 grams of protein.
- 12:24Right. And again then we're back to, is
- 12:26your gut OK after eating all of that?
- 12:28Because you'd have to consume quite a large amount of that in
- 12:32order to get the amount of protein that your body requires.
- 12:34Are these people are just lying like everybody just.
- 12:36Right. Wasn't there somebody online who
- 12:39claimed to consume only animal products and then it was
- 12:42revealed later on that they were maybe using some illegal
- 12:46substances in order to acquire a certain physique?
- 12:48Oh, it was the lover King. He was selling people on his
- 12:51supplements and then he was using anabolic.
- 12:53Steroids correct? That's the one I was looking
- 12:55for. Slipped my mind for a second.
- 12:59But I mean, also, we're seeing that a ton right now with the
- 13:01GOP ones and people, you know, selling their weight loss meal
- 13:05plans. And Lily, I see you shaking your
- 13:06head. You've seen this too.
- 13:08On TikTok right now but pills, the GLP 1 pills that you could
- 13:12take and they're everywhere. It's insane.
- 13:15I do consume a lot of nutrition related media but I get probably
- 13:19like 10 ads on TikTok a day. Wait.
- 13:22I'm not on TikTok So what is? This it's ad for.
- 13:25Pills that are GLP one mimic like what's going?
- 13:27On that probably have nothing in them and they say they work the
- 13:31same as a GLP one. Oh, that's horrific, Yes.
- 13:33And it's a bunch of girls being like, this is how I get skinny
- 13:37face. That's what I saw this week.
- 13:38Skinny face, yeah. Wow, we have.
- 13:42This up with this stuff, right? Oh, and stickers too, they have
- 13:45like the nicotine stickers but like that kind of thing.
- 13:48But it's they say it's GLP one. I have a little loss for
- 13:51Warriors over that. Lily, I'm thankful that you're
- 13:54here as our tick tock consultant because Jen and I are old and we
- 13:58need. Sometimes I wish I didn't see
- 14:01the things I see. Oh my gosh.
- 14:03Wow. Oh, it's rough out there.
- 14:05It is. Oh my gosh, it is.
- 14:08Well, dinner I would say. Do you have good news for us?
- 14:10But you also are going to have something that drives us
- 14:12bananas. So what do you got?
- 14:13This is pumpkin spice season and even though on previous Smash or
- 14:18Pass episodes Riley and I have both passed on pumpkin spice, I
- 14:21understand that it is a big thing that people like this time
- 14:25of year and I think that's totally fine.
- 14:27I am seeing so many people that go to Dunkin, Starbucks,
- 14:31whatever and get their pumpkin spice latte, get an iced pumpkin
- 14:34spice latte, get pumpkin bread, get something along along the
- 14:37lines of like a fall flavored food item and then immediately
- 14:41show in a jar, glass, whatever, the amount of sugar that is then
- 14:45in that food item. And it is to create fear around
- 14:49that specific thing. And I just want to remind
- 14:52everyone that calories are just energy and we can utilize all
- 14:58foods that are available to us in any way that is balanced and
- 15:01provides our body with enough energy.
- 15:03And we don't need to be afraid of every now and then having a
- 15:05pumpkin spice latte if it's something that you enjoy.
- 15:07And you don't need to miss out on pumpkin bread or pumpkin
- 15:09cookies or anything that you like this time of year because
- 15:13some man on Instagram showed you how much sugar was in it.
- 15:17Everybody knows who I'm talking about because he uses the same
- 15:19video. Every year but it.
- 15:20Just drives me bananas. I think this is such a great
- 15:22reminder going into the holiday season for everyone because it's
- 15:26such a common thing, even like at family events and things like
- 15:29that, for people to make comments on what's on other
- 15:31people's plate or like having pie at Thanksgiving and things
- 15:34like that. Also a little offended that we I
- 15:37have two passers on pumpkin spice because I'm a pumpkin
- 15:40spice stand. I love pumpkin spice but I will
- 15:45be enjoying my pumpkin spice latte.
- 15:46See I. Can't sit with us, Lily.
- 15:50I'm a big fan of like a Maple flavor or something like that.
- 15:53Like I'm, I'm going to pick that over pumpkin spice every single
- 15:56time. But I think this kind of ties
- 15:58back into what drove you bananas in that, like, people talk a lot
- 16:02about, you know, earning food or working off food.
- 16:04And as we do kind of head into this holiday season that's
- 16:07coming up, we're gonna hear a lot of that.
- 16:09It's like we think about like, I mean, gosh, Thanksgiving's not
- 16:11for a while now, but it's going to be here sooner than we know
- 16:13it. And we hear a lot of those same
- 16:16type of things around how are you going to work off your
- 16:18holiday meals or how are you going to offset your holiday
- 16:21meals? So it all just kind of like ties
- 16:23together and part of like creating the fear around the
- 16:25food in the 1st place because we don't want people to consume
- 16:28things that they enjoy for some reason.
- 16:29And then telling people that they need to exercise for
- 16:32extreme amounts or for long periods of time in order to be
- 16:35able to consume them if they were going to have them.
- 16:37So neither of those two things are true.
- 16:39If you want a pumpkin spice latte, you go for it and you
- 16:42don't need to earn it or work it off or anything like that.
- 16:45It's so interesting that depending on what side of the
- 16:47Internet you're on and like what you're surrounded with and your,
- 16:50you know, relationship to food is, it can really just change
- 16:53your perspective on things. Because right now, as I've
- 16:55shared multiple times on this podcast, I am marathon training
- 16:58and I am trying to figure out how I can get in carbohydrates
- 17:01as much as possible. And I see, you know, something
- 17:04that has, you know, a beverage like this that has carbohydrates
- 17:06and, and I think, Oh my gosh, that's such an easy way to get
- 17:09in more carbohydrates. But then you have people on the
- 17:12Internet that are like, carbohydrates are terrible.
- 17:14But again, it just really just depends.
- 17:16There's always different ways to look at things.
- 17:17Yeah. Just like when we're talking
- 17:19about period recovery, something that we've talked about with
- 17:21athletes before is like if they enjoy a latte or if they want
- 17:25something like that, like we can have that as part of their
- 17:27fueling because it might be easier for them to get in
- 17:30something like that because liquid energy and liquid fuel is
- 17:33sometimes easier for them to tolerate.
- 17:35And that falls into the same category.
- 17:37Yeah, I just think it's so interesting because like, Nerds
- 17:39gummies are really big right now, like in the endurance and
- 17:41running space, and I'm sure you've both seen stuff about
- 17:44them, but you have to eat 16 gummies to get 25 grams of
- 17:47carbohydrates. And I'm like, that's so many
- 17:49gummies and not enough carbohydrates.
- 17:51But again, like, you know, on the other side of the Internet
- 17:53people are saying like 25 grams of sugar is so bad.
- 17:56But again, it's just, it's all very interesting on how you look
- 17:59at it. How you look at it, what your
- 18:00body needs like we're a podcast that talks about sports
- 18:03nutrition and getting your period back.
- 18:05We're not talking about other population who might need to be
- 18:08monitoring how much sugar that they're including in their diet.
- 18:10You know, that's not what we're talking about here.
- 18:12So again, like this all just kind of goes back to like, it's
- 18:14what your body needs. It's so individualized and
- 18:17unique to you, and there's more than one right way to get there
- 18:21and all of those things that we could.
- 18:22Say, I think we end it right there.
- 18:25Well, if there are things that you saw online that drove you
- 18:27bananas this week, leave them in the comments of this podcast.
- 18:30We'd love to hear the feeling misinformation that you saw.
