- 0:01Hello world, and welcome to Grounded and Guided.
- 0:05I'm your host, Lynette Waltham, and I'm just so happy that you are
- 0:09choosing this moment to spend with me.
- 0:12Thank you.
- 0:14Today, I want to talk about something that is so much a part of me, that comes
- 0:20from deep within me, and I embody it.
- 0:25I have walked this walk and struggled, and it is been so much a part
- 0:35of this journey to this point of where I am today, and that is about
- 0:40the relationship with ourselves.
- 0:44And when I say that, like, how we are speaking to ourselves,
- 0:51how we are treating ourselves.
- 0:54Can we give ourselves compassion?
- 0:56Can we wrap our arms around ourselves and say, "I love you"?
- 1:02Or are we at odds with the mirror?
- 1:06Are we in a space where we are not kind to ourselves?
- 1:13We talk very unkind words and have very unkind inner dialogue with ourselves.
- 1:22Do we have that inner critic that is constantly running in
- 1:25the background saying that we are not skinny enough, pretty enough,
- 1:31smart enough, young enough, strong enough, and that, that list goes on.
- 1:38So this episode and this topic I feel like needs to just be wrapped in a
- 1:44cocoon of compassion and kindness, because it can really pull at our
- 1:49heartstrings when there's someone asking us how we are talking to ourselves.
- 1:57And that compassion is just really important, just recognize that where
- 2:02we are right now is enough, that we are loved just as we are right now.
- 2:12This version of us in this moment, we are loved.
- 2:18Now, I say that this- topic is so deeply connected to me because the
- 2:25practice of being able to love myself is something that I have worked through,
- 2:33transitioned into, and constantly am at battle with over and over again.
- 2:42You see, there was a time when I hated myself.
- 2:46I'm going to say it just as bluntly as that, that I hated myself,
- 2:50and I was so mean to myself.
- 2:52And that come at a time when I was dealing with a lot of emotions,
- 2:59and all of that kind of mixed together, created an eating disorder.
- 3:06That inner critic, the beliefs and the conditionings, the messages that
- 3:11I had got from family and society, mixed with all the heightened emotions
- 3:16of being a teenager, made this really interesting cocktail within
- 3:21me that created an eating disorder.
- 3:25And I want you to just recognize that these messages that we hear from our
- 3:30external environment, the messages we're not skinny enough, we're not
- 3:35good enough, all of that is not ours.
- 3:39That is the BS from the external environment, and that
- 3:44is what we call conditioning.
- 3:46It can impact us, and somewhere as we start to move through life, it becomes
- 3:51our beliefs that the ideal body looks a certain way, that the, the trophy
- 3:58belongs to only those who, and you fill in the blank, to create these
- 4:03beliefs that we are not good enough.
- 4:07But love can tell us different and can slowly walk us back to this
- 4:12place where we can believe that.
- 4:17So that time in my life where I hated myself, what did that look like?
- 4:22What did that feel like?
- 4:24Let me kind of illustrate that for you.
- 4:26Every time I looked in the mirror, I never had anything nice to say about myself.
- 4:31It was always that, "You look fat." That, for me, was something
- 4:36that continually played.
- 4:38That was on a loop for me.
- 4:39And because that was constantly on a loop in the background all of the time,
- 4:45that kept me in this place of shame.
- 4:51So everything that I wanted to achieve or to put myself out there or just be able
- 5:01to just really go out and do, there was always this voice in the background saying
- 5:09that I was fat, and it kept me stuck.
- 5:13It kept me in fear of not being able to just move through life how I wanted to.
- 5:22And it was that point where I had an emotional breakdown that kind
- 5:27of started to shake everything up.
- 5:30So if you know my story, listen to this podcast, you know that in 2017
- 5:36I burned out and had an emotional breakdown, and why that happened is I
- 5:41was living my life with my conditionings in the driver's seat of my life.
- 5:46I was listening to the beliefs, the conditionings, the programmings
- 5:50that were telling me who I was, and I wasn't listening to myself.
- 5:56So I believed that I was fat.
- 5:58I believed I wasn't worthy.
- 6:00I believed that I wasn't good enough.
- 6:03But there was something in me that was fighting that and telling
- 6:07me, "No, that's not the truth.
- 6:09That is not who you are." But my head just had me believing that was the
- 6:15truth, so I was at odds, and I was fighting myself, and I broke down
- 6:20And it's that experience that really started me looking at life differently.
- 6:26Looking at the things that I had been doing up to that point in time that
- 6:29got me there, and look at them and ask myself what belonged and what didn't.
- 6:35And I remember hearing somewhere along the way this message of
- 6:41how we talk to ourselves, and it had us just think about those that we love and
- 6:48how we talk to those that we love compared to how we were talking to ourselves.
- 6:53And it made me realize that how I talked to my friends and my family and
- 7:00those that I cared about was in huge contrast to how I talked to myself.
- 7:06Wow, my world was blown up.
- 7:08That awareness alone on just that one very simple thing really started
- 7:13to create big ripple effects for me.
- 7:17So it was with that bit of understanding and awareness that I gained that
- 7:22I decided to choose different So I made an intention that I'm gonna
- 7:26change the way I talk to myself.
- 7:29I become very aware of that inner dialogue, and when something come
- 7:34up where I was belittling myself, being very negative I was unkind,
- 7:40was hating myself, I just stopped.
- 7:44I said, "No, I don't talk about myself like that anymore."
- 7:48And it was just that simple act of stopping.
- 7:50And then eventually that act of stopping created space where I started
- 7:56to choose to change the dialogue.
- 7:58And I say eventually because it didn't happen overnight.
- 8:02Just like any change, there's a bit of a process.
- 8:06It's not instantaneous.
- 8:08There's some steps that we need to have to work through.
- 8:10We need some space around that.
- 8:13We need to be able to give ourselves kindness and compassion.
- 8:17So eventually I got to that space where I could change how I was talking to myself.
- 8:24It started small as just a matter of, " I see you.
- 8:29There you are." Just kind of acknowledging myself as I was in that moment. And
- 8:35then I was able to just start to say, "Oh, that color looks good on you.
- 8:40Oh, I like that shirt." And those little things, they just started to build slowly
- 8:45over time, just continuing to be kind.
- 8:49I could shift into maybe some bigger things of being able to actually
- 8:56put a hand on my heart, being able to actually add in some physical
- 9:01s- touch with those kind words.
- 9:05And eventually that language and that dialogue turned into, " I love you."
- 9:12And I remember those first moments of saying, "I love you," and just
- 9:18so much emotion flowed through me.
- 9:20That was a huge step in connecting with myself and building a
- 9:27relationship with myself.
- 9:30And this practice holds true.
- 9:33I talk to myself in kind, loving ways numerous times a day.
- 9:38Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not perfect.
- 9:42Absolutely not perfect.
- 9:43And so there are times when I slip into that shame cycle, that shame dialogue,
- 9:52and it kind of can start small and it can gain momentum very quickly.
- 9:57When I talk about the relationship with myself and where I was at one
- 10:02point in time in my l life contrasted to where I am today, is at that kind
- 10:07of lowest point, there was just shame.
- 10:12Everything was just, like, cloaked or bathed in shame.
- 10:16Because I, I have an interest in personal wellness, in fitness, that has always
- 10:23been a part of me, and because of that, I've also built this knowledge, and I even
- 10:29feel like today so many of us know better.
- 10:34And I'm gonna put air quotes around that, "know better" And that can
- 10:39get us really wrapped up in a shame cycle of I know I shouldn't eat that.
- 10:44Why did I eat that?
- 10:45Oh you're stupid, you're worthless" And This ball of energy just starts building
- 10:50and building and building as we talk to ourselves that way, and that inner critic
- 10:54and those inner voices start, to build.
- 10:57And it just makes us feel heavy and heavier, and just
- 11:01even maybe more worthless.
- 11:04And even as I talk about that, my body contracts.
- 11:07I wanna drop my head because that energy of shame is very much a very low frequency
- 11:18But I want you to recognize that you don't have to live there.
- 11:23That does not need to be your steady state.
- 11:26That battle with the mirror- That inner critic that won't shut up, this
- 11:32feeling that you are not good enough, that does not need to be how you live.
- 11:39You can transform from that.
- 11:42You can transcend into a different way of living.
- 11:46And it just starts by being able to shift one small thing.
- 11:55So how do we shift?
- 11:58The first thing you can do is just be aware.
- 12:01Be aware of how you talk to yourself.
- 12:03And once we become aware, we can just give ourselves compassion.
- 12:08Give ourself a little bit of grace because we're maybe going to try something new.
- 12:15And then when we are aware, we can just stop the action that is harming us and
- 12:21create space for something different.
- 12:25And in that space, we can change the dialogue.
- 12:28We can change how we talk to ourself, just slowly, small shifts.
- 12:35And maybe it's not even how you talk to yourself.
- 12:38Maybe the action is just even being able to look in the mirror
- 12:42and just connect with yourself.
- 12:44Just being able to look at yourself and not say anything at all.
- 12:49Just look.
- 12:51Just see the person that is there, the person in that moment just as they are.
- 12:57And then eventually you might start to be able to say something kind.
- 13:03Maybe you'll be able to place a hand on your heart
- 13:08and connect physical touch with those supportive and loving words.
- 13:13And then eventually maybe you can move to that place where you can start to offer
- 13:18yourself words of kindness, of compassion.
- 13:23Maybe you'll be able to support yourself with a hug.
- 13:27And then eventually maybe you can move to that space that is the
- 13:31simple but so powerful, "I love you."
- 13:34The simple act of changing how we speak to ourselves really
- 13:39truly can change your life.
- 13:43I am the example of going from a place rooted deeply in shame and self-loathing
- 13:50to one that is overflowing with love.
- 13:54Once I got to this place where loving myself become a daily practice,
- 14:01become just a part of my life, that capacity grew within me, and it
- 14:08really did start to overflow my cup.
- 14:13It made me want to show love in different ways, and it really
- 14:20opened myself up to recognize that I am also worthy to receive love.
- 14:28And I started to become more in flow with the world and the energy
- 14:34that really comes from our heart.
- 14:37There really is a giving and a receiving flow that happens in the world.
- 14:45I want you to just hear and understand that I would not be in the place
- 14:51that I am today if it wasn't for the giving and the receiving flow
- 14:56that takes place in the world.
- 14:58Over my journey, I've come across strangers who were just open and willing
- 15:04to just hold space for me, allow me to release, allow me to unwrap those
- 15:12limiting beliefs that had me so stuck in that world and in that very contracted
- 15:19holding place of I am not enough, I am not worthy, and the shame loops that
- 15:25I lived the majority of my life in.
- 15:28People who started out as strangers become fundamental points of
- 15:33impact on my life, very fundamental directional shifts for me.
- 15:40They gave me the space for me to be me, to be able to recognize that
- 15:46there were voices within me that were stronger than the beliefs and the
- 15:52conditionings and the programmings that held me in that shame loop.
- 15:58They opened me up and brought an awareness to different actions and tools that I
- 16:07could utilize to help me move forward.
- 16:11They gave me guidance, insights, and empowerment to keep going, to keep
- 16:18taking the steps, to keep helping myself.
- 16:23And that's why I'm bringing this conversation to you today, giving
- 16:27you a tool that might help you to start to shift a limiting belief
- 16:32for you, this tool of changing the way that we speak to ourselves.
- 16:36It really is something small, but can be such a fundamental life shift.
- 16:43And I just want you to recognize that if I can do it, you can do it.
- 16:48And I'm here when you are ready
- 16:51I want to leave you with a quote
- 16:54Bruce Lee once said, "Don't speak negatively about yourself, even as a joke.
- 17:01Your body doesn't know the difference.
- 17:03Words are energy, and they cast spells.
- 17:07That's why it's called spelling.
- 17:09Change the way you speak about yourself, and you change your life."
- 17:14Thank you so much for being here with me.
