- Cindy Marler: Benjamin Franklin once said, beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship. A small leak in a great ship over time will sink it. It doesn't have to be as drastic as the Titanic running into an iceberg. A tiny leak in a huge ship will eventually sink it if it's not repaired. So beware of the little expenses. And boy, do we live in a little expense time, don't we? Little expenses are coming at us everywhere. I once had a friend say it's death by the $9.99 a month bleed. How many little expenses do you have in your life that you don't need, don't use, or are unnecessary? Are you paying for Apple Music? Are you paying for Netflix and Prime and Disney Plus? Do you have a subscription to an app? Do you have I I mean there's it's endless, right? It's endless. Even I remember with Amazon Prime, they charge a fee for usage versus free shipping. It's changed a little bit. But I remember once doing the math on that and I'm like, I don't think I use Amazon shipping enough to need to save this money. This was years ago. So how think about all of the little expenses you have and really contemplate what is necessary. That's just the little ongoing subscriptions that can sneak away from you. What about the little expenses with being out and about? Are you used to adding on a pack of Tic Tacs when you go to the grocery store? I was surprised, surprised the other day when they're like $2.50 for a little box of Tic Tacs. And if you're in that habit of doing that once a week, that's $150 a year, which is fine if you know that's where you want to spend $150 a year. But $150 a year over 10 years is a lot of money. So where are these little expenses in your life? And they're okay to have, but I just want you to put them through a different filter. Are they bringing you joy? Are they adding value in your life? Remember, if they're adding value, they have to be balanced out. Are they taking away value? So maybe the adding value of the fun coffee is taking value away from your physical health between the sugar, the calories, and the caffeine. Let's be aware just for today of all of the little expenses. Because as Benjamin Franklin said, beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship.
