- 0:00Oh, God.
- 0:05Oh, my God.
- 0:22Look at how big my beer is.
- 0:24Oh, it's so big.
- 0:26I mean, compared to your head, which is ginormous,
- 0:29that's a big bear.
- 0:31At 32 ounces.
- 0:32Whoo.
- 0:35I just went and had
- 0:37happy hour dinner and drinks with my coworker,
- 0:40Alyssa, and we went to.
- 0:44I mean, you know, since we're going to talk about pig today,
- 0:46this is kind of fitting because we went to like
- 0:49get fancy oysters and like fancy expensive food on happy hour
- 0:52that I generally can't afford.
- 0:54You went highfalutin.
- 0:56Yeah, they had a really juicy like fucking White Castle Burger,
- 0:58the steam burger
- 1:00with like gourmet cheese.
- 1:03Did it give you gourmet shits like a White Castle Burger?
- 1:07We'll see. Only true form.
- 1:09Yeah, exactly.
- 1:10If we have to stop halfway through the podcast.
- 1:12This is this podcast is now an unofficial race your body competition.
- 1:17Now, the question is, were the little burgers, were they square?
- 1:20Yes. Oh, OK.
- 1:22Did they have the holes in them?
- 1:24No, but it was steamed.
- 1:25It was a cowards.
- 1:27I do love a steamed ham.
- 1:30I like when I ordered it because it was like the steamed burger
- 1:32and I was getting like we were getting oysters and I was like, I'm like,
- 1:36is this a Simpsons reference?
- 1:37And then when I when they brought it out, I'm like, wait, no, White Castle.
- 1:41This makes sense now.
- 1:43What's the name of the joint you went to?
- 1:46Canard.
- 1:47This does sound highfalutin.
- 1:49But no, it was it was super fancy.
- 1:52They had the cheapest pens, though, like Alyssa and I both got our bills
- 1:55and neither of our pens worked.
- 1:57I respect the attention to craft.
- 1:59And then the second place we went, they had a fondue.
- 2:02And I'm like, oh, fun.
- 2:04Don't mind if I do.
- 2:06Exactly.
- 2:07And they did not bring us little plates.
- 2:08So I was precariously balancing dripping like hot cheese over my dress.
- 2:12I'm like, this is this is less than ideal.
- 2:15I'm going to leave an angry review on Yelp that no one will read.
- 2:19Oh, that's weak.
- 2:21You should have just let it drip and then use the bottom of the dress
- 2:24to like wipe your face, showing everybody your Johnson.
- 2:29Yeah, that's leveling up.
- 2:30I mean, I'm wearing undergarments.
- 2:34Coward, coward.
- 2:36It's not a kilt.
- 2:38It's also as Nick and I had discussed previously to you getting on Peter.
- 2:41It's fucking cold down here.
- 2:43You mean in your nether region or?
- 2:45Yes.
- 2:47Cold from inattention.
- 2:49If I weren't wearing if I weren't wearing leggings
- 2:51and I decided to give everyone a show, they wouldn't.
- 2:54It would have been trivial.
- 2:55There wouldn't have been much to say.
- 2:57Not if that hand the waiter had gotten in there.
- 3:01Soft waiter hands.
- 3:02Yeah. That tip don't come cheap.
- 3:05Monetary tip. My tip comes cheap.
- 3:06I'm a cheap.
- 3:08Yeah. Thank you for clarifying.
- 3:11All right. Pig it is pig wins next episode.
- 3:14OK, good. Thanks, guys.
- 3:17Glad we postponed until today.
- 3:18I have stuff to say.
- 3:22I saved something new up in here for when we talk about Joe.
- 3:27And we'll see if I remember it.
- 3:29I had I had thoughts about
- 3:32both of these movies in regards to Nicholas Cage.
- 3:35I mean, that is what do we do here, Sean?
- 3:38Welcome back to KG.
- 3:39Matt Carlin around about Nicholas Cage.
- 3:41I'm your host, Sean, here with my co-host Nick
- 3:44and our producer Peter. Hello.
- 3:47And this week might be the best setup to that bit we've ever done.
- 3:53Yeah, actually.
- 3:54I mean, I mean, it is I guess giving like the thesis,
- 3:57which we should do anyway, and don't most of the time.
- 4:00I'm hey, last episode, I didn't get into this till like the back 20 minutes.
- 4:05Yeah, I liked it. It was good.
- 4:07Yeah. Hey, I'm impressed that it only took us almost three years
- 4:11to figure out how a podcast works.
- 4:13And we're almost done.
- 4:16I mean, we have most of it figured out.
- 4:17You need microphones, I guess, headphones.
- 4:20They're called cans in the business, Peter.
- 4:22Love a good can.
- 4:24I do, too.
- 4:25I've got a folded towel, you know, just sitting here
- 4:29at the ready, the waiter comes. Yeah.
- 4:32So I can put it over my waist for, you know, discretion.
- 4:35Yeah, it's modest. Yeah.
- 4:38I'm not fucking Peewee Herman out here.
- 4:40It's like that.
- 4:41It's like that's something that baby
- 4:43that you have to eat like with a sheet over your head to hide your shame.
- 4:46Oh, yeah. The or to lawn. Yeah.
- 4:51I know fancy food stuff.
- 4:53Have you guys ever seen a duck press?
- 4:55A duck breast.
- 4:58Press P.R.E.S.S.
- 5:02I'm like I'm imagining like a wine press, like a great press,
- 5:05but for just with a bunch of ducks in it.
- 5:08You like cook a duck and then you put it into this like medieval torture device
- 5:12that has like a whole bunch of screws and like cranks.
- 5:16And then it crushes and pulverizes the duck into a goo.
- 5:21And then you I can't I think you cook it somehow more than that,
- 5:26but I don't remember what else gets added to it.
- 5:28And then you eat that.
- 5:30It's like you. You had me at goo.
- 5:32So it's like a shittier panini press.
- 5:36God,
- 5:38the press is already.
- 5:39Yeah. But what if you could
- 5:42liquefy your panini and eat it that way?
- 5:44That be that might be an upgrade, honestly, to a panini.
- 5:47That's just like how many of us have owned a panini press?
- 5:50I've owned a George Foreman.
- 5:51I mean, if you count a George Foreman grill
- 5:54and then you just put a book on top of it and that's a panini press.
- 5:59Yeah.
- 6:00But can Hornback once told me that every like every sandwich should be paninied
- 6:05a panini press makes every sandwich better.
- 6:08And like the panini is the ultimate sandwich.
- 6:10I'm like, do you have a panini press?
- 6:10I'm like, and he said yes.
- 6:12And I'm like, how many times have you used it?
- 6:13He's like once I'm like, that's everyone who's ever owned a panini press.
- 6:17Yeah. I mean, I think you could make a case
- 6:19that like a toasted sandwich is potentially superior.
- 6:23OK, hold on.
- 6:24I want to say that Hornback using a kitchen appliance
- 6:28even once validates his existence.
- 6:32Nothing validates his existence.
- 6:34Not his the panini press. Sorry.
- 6:36The panini press. Yeah.
- 6:38Was it this podcast or just a general
- 6:42chicanery when we came up with the panini press?
- 6:44That seems like an orc.
- 6:45It was not.
- 6:46It was not this podcast, but it does seem like an orc.
- 6:50It's to get the ridges.
- 6:55So on this podcast, we talk about Nicolas Cage movies.
- 6:58Obviously, we started with a bracket of 64 films,
- 7:02narrowed it down to 32, then the slicks teen.
- 7:05Now we're in the master eight.
- 7:07But you got to say it faster. The master eight.
- 7:11I don't get it.
- 7:12The waiter does.
- 7:14Ah, there we go.
- 7:16This week, we are discussing Pig V.
- 7:18Joe, two movies that have three letters in the name.
- 7:23And Beards.
- 7:24He's got a he's got a sidekick.
- 7:27He does have a sidekick in both.
- 7:28It is kind of like a buddy movie in both cases.
- 7:30And they both start star Nicolas Cage.
- 7:33You know, it's kind of sad that I immediately just
- 7:36I didn't think of a mirror.
- 7:37I thought you were referring to handpan
- 7:40as his kid sidekick.
- 7:42You know, that kid who was in the movie for one scene.
- 7:44I do love handpan.
- 7:47What's a persimmon?
- 7:48You fucking dumb kid.
- 7:51Yeah.
- 7:53Parents don't teach you anything anymore.
- 7:56I still maintain that kid's going to wind up on a fucking bill card in one day.
- 8:01Yeah, I mean, the total lack of stranger danger is pretty troubling.
- 8:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:06I mean, if a dude's in your backyard, he must be OK to talk to, though,
- 8:11because why else would he be in your backyard?
- 8:14I come across my fair share of unhoused people in the city, and
- 8:18generally, they've all been quite polite.
- 8:21There's only been one guy.
- 8:22There's only been one guy.
- 8:23He came in hot.
- 8:25I got to a bar after a dinner thing, and pretty much as soon as I got in there,
- 8:29the bar backslash bouncer just like ran into the bar,
- 8:33like a lock in it behind him and like this other guy just like him
- 8:36and like just slammed his hand against the glass and was like holding a
- 8:40Where's Waldo book up to it?
- 8:43Because he was excited about finding Waldo.
- 8:45I don't know. We were told the guy has a knife.
- 8:47He likes to show it to people and they're like, we're just not dealing with it
- 8:50tonight. We're all like, they're not fair at all.
- 8:54Yeah, I think that's a reasonable choice.
- 8:55I want to see the knife, but I really I want to see if they found Waldo.
- 9:00Oh, it's just that dickhead who circles Waldo and Sharpie on every page.
- 9:06That shit bugs me.
- 9:08Do it at the dentist's office.
- 9:10Like, here you go, fuckers.
- 9:11Yeah, we all we all know that Nick was more of an odd lot.
- 9:14I do love odd law.
- 9:15I also love finding the wizard.
- 9:18What was the dog's name?
- 9:19Wall dog dog.
- 9:22Wait, say yours again, Sean.
- 9:24Dog down.
- 9:25I don't think that's a good word.
- 9:26Yeah, obviously, it's a dill dog.
- 9:32Now you're thinking of the dog from Dilbert.
- 9:36Wolf, his name was Wolf.
- 9:38That doesn't follow convention.
- 9:39Dill dog. It does not.
- 9:42What was Lady Waldo?
- 9:43Wenda. Yeah, that's rough.
- 9:47I'm pretty sure Waldo and Wenda are the same person.
- 9:50Waldo does have kind of an its pat sort of vibe.
- 9:52Yeah, I'm looking at I'm looking at a side by side right now.
- 9:55I mean, I'm the last person that can, you know,
- 9:58fucking throw stones in this in regards to this.
- 10:01Yeah, for real.
- 10:03I think I found our next Halloween costume group.
- 10:05Halloween costume.
- 10:05Make it a solo costume and just keep leaving the room and changing.
- 10:09It always bugs me when large groups of people all dress up as Waldo
- 10:13to go out on Halloween.
- 10:14No, you all dress up as almost Waldo.
- 10:17You have one person dressed fully as Waldo.
- 10:21But everybody wants to be Waldo, then
- 10:23only one person gets to be Waldo, then.
- 10:26Yeah, that's the bit.
- 10:27Well, I don't think I want to do this costume with you.
- 10:30All right. Let's just all go as a hornback.
- 10:33I do want to do that costume.
- 10:35I want to be two hornbacks in a horse costume.
- 10:37We have to both show up as horse butts.
- 10:41Yes.
- 10:43I love this movie.
- 10:44I absolutely adore this movie.
- 10:46Still, to this day,
- 10:48I don't I don't have much else to say about it other than it's great.
- 10:51It continues to be great.
- 10:53Yeah. One of these days, I want to try.
- 10:56I mean, this doesn't have to be anything, but I just want to make the food from pig.
- 11:01Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's a great idea.
- 11:03If it makes it to the the final two,
- 11:06we should have that be served at the movie theater. Sure.
- 11:09But only one item, Amir's disappointing French toast.
- 11:14It's like, sorry, I don't cook much.
- 11:16Yeah, exactly.
- 11:18Set off the set off the smoke detector.
- 11:21I was just going to bring one.
- 11:22I'll take a baguette.
- 11:25Yeah, actually.
- 11:25So the journey of pig, it first went up against left behind.
- 11:29Left behind.
- 11:32Maybe we got that one wrong.
- 11:34No, we did not.
- 11:37That movie is so terrible.
- 11:39I was thinking about that because I was re listening to the episode.
- 11:42And the only thing that was funny about that was that
- 11:44Nick got to make a lot of left behind jokes.
- 11:47And she was left behind.
- 11:49Oh, yeah, that that never gets old.
- 11:53I, you know, honestly, I like thinking back on left behind,
- 11:58like all the weird piles of clothes and like the way she like
- 12:03took her brother's clothes and backpack and was like carrying it around.
- 12:07Like it was going to rehydrate into him or some shit.
- 12:11Yeah. And like all the clothes, like falling out of the sky
- 12:15in the mall or whatever, like as if everybody was like,
- 12:18Oh, I'm getting raptured.
- 12:20Now is the time for me to jump off this like sky bridge
- 12:25and like, Oh, pants.
- 12:26Woohoo.
- 12:28It's raining pants.
- 12:32I just think it's the parents who really didn't like those kids.
- 12:35And all of a sudden, these kids are gone and they're celebrating.
- 12:37They're just like, yes.
- 12:38They chuck the stuff in the.
- 12:40Yeah. Fuck your pants, dad.
- 12:43I'm just thinking about how
- 12:46detrimental actual Christians
- 12:50who aren't assholes that would actually get raptured.
- 12:54And I don't think it's as many as Thanos's snap would take out.
- 12:56I don't think the economy will.
- 12:58It's definitely not 50 percent of the world, so.
- 13:04Yeah, that's a pretty high.
- 13:08Plus, his snap was universal.
- 13:12Yeah, but we're America.
- 13:13We don't care about that.
- 13:13America first.
- 13:14We always get raptured.
- 13:16What if God had it wrong
- 13:20or like had a speech impediment and instead of rapturing everybody,
- 13:23he raptured everybody and we all got turned into raptors.
- 13:29This is a Chuck Tingle situation.
- 13:31I am 100 percent here for that religion.
- 13:35We've just you have just invented a new religion.
- 13:38Guys, Chuck Tingle is going to be at Emerald City Comic Con this year.
- 13:42So if you need to like go meet Chuck Tingle.
- 13:48That's the time to do it.
- 13:49Love is real.
- 13:53That's what he says.
- 13:55I think I've only listened to his podcast once or twice.
- 13:59It's pretty hilarious.
- 14:02So let's see, what is your favorite meal from Pig?
- 14:05Maybe the shitty takeout food that he gives to Edgar.
- 14:08I don't know that.
- 14:10What was that thing he made that in the first one?
- 14:13The result of the rustic tart.
- 14:16It does look pretty good.
- 14:16Yeah, that looks that looks pretty good.
- 14:18I want that.
- 14:20Yeah, I don't want to have to like live in a dirty cabin to make it.
- 14:24Like if I can just make them at home, that'd be great.
- 14:26Wouldn't be rustic.
- 14:27I mean, you could just start a fire in your courtyard and cook it out there.
- 14:31You do have to have hands washed only loosely in a river.
- 14:35Soaps overrated.
- 14:39That's all the friction.
- 14:40I have an immune system.
- 14:41Get that waiter over here.
- 14:42What's it good for if I'm not putting it to work every once in a while?
- 14:44Need me some friction.
- 14:46Yeah. You need that.
- 14:48That farmer friend.
- 14:50Yeah, those callous hands will just blast the dirt right off.
- 14:55I need your help starting a fire.
- 14:58Yeah, just rub this stick between your palms.
- 15:02Oh, yeah, I just.
- 15:05One of those until just sparks.
- 15:11Let's see.
- 15:12So it one of the things left behind the frozen ground and eight millimeters.
- 15:17Frozen ground.
- 15:19Rest in ground is.
- 15:20Yeah, that wasn't too bad for like
- 15:22just a Nicolas Cage, quote unquote, thriller or whatever.
- 15:26Like in retrospect, it's like maybe a C plus as a film goes.
- 15:31Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 15:32But in terms of things that got eliminated, it wasn't that bad.
- 15:38No, it was pretty decent overall.
- 15:39And I mean, it did have 50 Cent in the wig, which is.
- 15:42Oh, hell yeah.
- 15:43I forgot about that.
- 15:45I mean, eight millimeter really.
- 15:47I mean, we talked about this got by as far as it did because of its matchups.
- 15:52Not that it doesn't deserve to be remembered fondly, but.
- 15:55Yeah, I actually it kind of has grown on me in retrospect to like
- 16:00I think you guys liked it more than I did.
- 16:01And I've thought about that movie more than I thought that I would.
- 16:05Yeah, it's a I, you know, I still enjoy eight millimeter.
- 16:10It's one that I would rewatch.
- 16:13In the right mood, but
- 16:17which I don't know what the mood is for watching.
- 16:21You got to be in a Dino Dino velvet.
- 16:22Yeah, I got to want to hear like a lot of background,
- 16:25a effects twin and whatnot.
- 16:28I mean, so what's interesting to me is like Pig, obviously, is a very good movie.
- 16:33It's well regarded by everybody.
- 16:35It's very well regarded by us.
- 16:36It wasn't like a surprise necessarily, even though I think it's a surprise
- 16:40that we loved it as much as we did.
- 16:42And that sort of grew over time.
- 16:44I think that its path to this point has been kind of easy.
- 16:48Yeah, but.
- 16:50It's also good, so clearly it deserved.
- 16:53It was what, like a one seed for us.
- 16:57Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:58So it's the only one seed left in the race.
- 17:02Yeah, correct. Yeah.
- 17:04It hasn't had any challenges up until theoretically this week.
- 17:11Yeah.
- 17:12Joe. Yeah, Joe was much more hard fought to get here
- 17:15because Joe went up against some like good things.
- 17:19Joe's path was tough.
- 17:20I mean, I'm biased because I thought Zanderle was.
- 17:23I love Zanderle.
- 17:25Not saying Zanderle isn't great.
- 17:30Didn't deserve to go forward.
- 17:31No, it didn't deserve to go forward over.
- 17:33Joe. There's no world where Zanderle comes out, came out of this on top.
- 17:37Yeah. Just like in that movie.
- 17:38I don't think Zanderle was a top at all.
- 17:41But remember Steve Buscemi? Yeah.
- 17:43And then.
- 17:45I forgot. I forgot.
- 17:47I was forgetting that movie.
- 17:48Kind of like in Conair. Boo.
- 17:51I can't make a make an argument for him in Zanderle.
- 17:56I think he's just in it for some reason.
- 17:59Yeah, he's just like a guy on a work crew.
- 18:02Pretty much right.
- 18:03No, he's on like work release or something.
- 18:05And then he runs away.
- 18:06Yeah. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 18:09Steals the TV.
- 18:10Yeah.
- 18:11Maybe it's Garland Green.
- 18:13Maybe it's Garland Green.
- 18:15So yeah, Zanderle and then it went up against bringing out the dead.
- 18:19And then.
- 18:20Great movie. Yeah, totally.
- 18:21And then leaving Las Vegas.
- 18:22Also great movie.
- 18:23Also a movie that you have to be in a really specific mindset to watch.
- 18:28Yeah, I mean, I stand by the decision to have Joe go over that one.
- 18:31I think it's a great movie in general, but mostly because of the performance.
- 18:35You know, like I just don't want to watch that movie ever again.
- 18:38Oh, my God. If I never have to hear Sting
- 18:42start that damn song and never finish it.
- 18:47That is sort of his M.O.
- 18:48Oh, man.
- 18:50Never stop, never stopping.
- 18:52Fucking sting with his non-complete agreements.
- 18:58Yeah. How was watching Joe?
- 19:00How was watching Joe again this time?
- 19:01I really liked it. Like I said, oh, I did notice.
- 19:04Did did you guys ever acknowledge how fucking short that other cop is in the background?
- 19:10Like when Earl is releasing Joe and Sting,
- 19:17and then there was a cop bringing in another guy, he's like five foot flat.
- 19:22Like this guy is fucking small.
- 19:24Oh, man. Now I want to watch like kind of in the scene.
- 19:30And then you see him in the background, like booking somebody
- 19:34and he looks like a bald child.
- 19:37Holy shit, that guy is really short.
- 19:41He's like the guy he's escorting is like three feet taller than him.
- 19:45Oh, dip. Yeah.
- 19:51Yeah, that guy is tiny.
- 19:53I mean, what was the director on Joe again?
- 19:56David Gordon Green.
- 19:57I mean, he does have that thing for just like extras, just being, you know.
- 20:03Oh, yeah.
- 20:05It's pretty interesting.
- 20:06I really like that about him.
- 20:07And I mean, I think things have changed because now he's like directing
- 20:10the Halloween series and stuff like that, which is sort of strange.
- 20:13But his original like take was basically like
- 20:18slices of Americana and real life people and sort of like
- 20:22the normal version of David Lynch.
- 20:26How big is his head?
- 20:28Not that big. Oh.
- 20:31I mean, the thing that always stands out
- 20:35in this movie to me is just the physicality of Nicholas Cage in this film.
- 20:39He is a fucking brick shithouse.
- 20:41He looks natural at that size.
- 20:44Yeah, I agree.
- 20:45I remember the point I was going to make earlier that I completely forgot.
- 20:48It's just like.
- 20:50There's always that like view of like Nicholas Cage is this crazy guy,
- 20:53which, you know, fucking he is.
- 20:54But like, I feel like in this is in like the serious category
- 20:58that we've set him up in specifically is where I don't know if it's the directors.
- 21:02I don't know if it's just the roles he's picked for these.
- 21:06But like, there's so much more of a commitment to so many of these characters.
- 21:10And like, you really see the character actor work in like these
- 21:14and this category of the bracket.
- 21:19In a way that I don't feel like you see.
- 21:22Outside of like maybe a weatherman.
- 21:23Certainly in the movies we've chosen to move forward,
- 21:27I would not say he committed much to left behind.
- 21:33You could say that his performance was left behind.
- 21:37Left behind those reach.
- 21:39And I'm sorry.
- 21:42It was it's OK.
- 21:44Are you me?
- 21:45Welcome back to Cage match.
- 21:46Colin, round about with.
- 21:48This cage.
- 21:49You know, I mean, but then, you know, he's also been in like
- 21:53Captain Correlli's Mandolin, which he committed to.
- 21:56Sure, but that was kind of a goofy or film or a goofier role in that film.
- 22:03I don't miss that movie.
- 22:05I don't know that it's going to make a natural appearance in my life, but
- 22:10it was fine.
- 22:12Maybe a C minus.
- 22:15I know I feel like for when we do the the double feature finale,
- 22:19we need to just go like find a loose bargain bin of DVDs
- 22:22and just put one under every seat.
- 22:25Just a grab bag of miscellaneous.
- 22:27Nick Cage DVDs.
- 22:29I said we just lock the doors
- 22:31and make everyone watch Captain Correlli's Mandolin so they can suffer like we did.
- 22:34OK, that's an interesting question that we're going to sidebar on.
- 22:38What movie other than Captain Correlli's?
- 22:40What two movies would you force everyone to watch that suck?
- 22:47You just say 100 percent you get so.
- 22:51It's a doublehead doubleheader of jujitsu twice and then jujitsu twice.
- 22:59I don't Captain Correlli's.
- 23:00It's got it's got charming moments.
- 23:02It's got the beach scene.
- 23:05It's got like it's got fun little moments.
- 23:08It's got him like not playing the mandolin for an extended period of time
- 23:13because he has to wait for the like the horn section.
- 23:18Boy, I know I would throw Primal in there.
- 23:22Boy, I want to say
- 23:24army of one would come back.
- 23:28Yeah, I mean, my pick is definitely Prisoners of the Ghosts land.
- 23:31Yeah, Gavanna Gavanna.
- 23:37I I will always be ready for that.
- 23:40I am so ready to show that I've after doing this for like
- 23:45two more years, I am ready to like just go back to that.
- 23:50I think another one that I would put into the conversation
- 23:52just because it still makes me laugh so much now is next.
- 23:56It's like that movie sucks.
- 23:58It's so bad, but like it is pretty fun and fun.
- 24:01It's the most exploding Jessica Alba's of any film,
- 24:05which is zero of those Beals.
- 24:07Yeah. Oh, yes.
- 24:09You know, I would be excited for some drive angry also
- 24:13that that scene of him like, yeah,
- 24:17getting laid and drinking
- 24:20and then getting into a gunfight while still getting laid was just too good.
- 24:25I mean,
- 24:27all right. So let's see, Joe.
- 24:29My favorite scene still has got to be the the.
- 24:33I mean, it's just so funny and it's so stupid
- 24:37and I hadn't remembered until re listening to the podcast
- 24:41that when they go and talk to that lady about the dog,
- 24:44they're both just making the cool face.
- 24:46And I'm like, also very drunk.
- 24:49It's like that is so funny to me.
- 24:52Just like, what did that lady think?
- 24:54It's a dog that looks like a cow.
- 24:56Well, lots of dogs can look like cows.
- 25:03I just love how
- 25:05Joe is just hitting on that lady, too.
- 25:08So I go call me sometime.
- 25:11Oh, yeah.
- 25:13They're going to write my number on this beer can.
- 25:15This is a drunk adolescent wanders around in your front yard.
- 25:22Don't worry about it. He's cool.
- 25:24And then she's like, ask scary if he's
- 25:27if he's driving
- 25:30because clearly Joe was too drunk.
- 25:36It is really good.
- 25:37This movie is really good.
- 25:38The chemistry between
- 25:41Ty Sheridan and Nicholas Cage is terrific.
- 25:45Yeah, I mean, I think that's really what it hinges on.
- 25:47Right. Like if you had a crappier teenage actor
- 25:51or a not Nick Cage in this role, I just don't think it plays the same.
- 25:56I was I was coming into this kind of ready to be like, I don't like
- 26:01Nick Cage is great in this,
- 26:03but I was kind of ready to come into this just with
- 26:07I don't know that this movie necessarily hinges on it being the cage,
- 26:12but I just have like IMDb open up right now.
- 26:14And I'm just watching like little vignettes of
- 26:17Joe just out of the corner of my eye and just
- 26:22every look, every just little like every little just Nick Cage,
- 26:25just Nick Cage smoking a cigarette.
- 26:27And I'm like, no, it has that it has to be that face.
- 26:29It has to be that fucking guy.
- 26:31I don't think that people really.
- 26:35Understand it and appreciate.
- 26:38How good of a physical actor he is.
- 26:41It's only something I'm coming to really kind of appreciate
- 26:44several hundreds of hours into this experiment. Yeah.
- 26:50Yeah. His Nicholas Cage's physical performances are terrific.
- 26:55I think that's I mean,
- 26:57that's kind of like what his whole deal hinges on, like all of his freak outs,
- 27:01like their big physical things
- 27:06that tie into the emotional experience that he's providing.
- 27:09But his physicality is just on point.
- 27:15And everything from like.
- 27:18Yeah. On in 60 seconds.
- 27:21Let's ride.
- 27:23To the fucking
- 27:28ghost rider.
- 27:29But I mean, even beyond just like the like the Meeble below is
- 27:32I'm just looking at the cover of Joe and just like, yeah,
- 27:35the way he just holds his body, just like
- 27:38it's so good.
- 27:40It's like so many minor things that like the shadow of
- 27:45Nick Cage, the crazy man, I feel like really
- 27:49covers up like for most people how good he really is at his job.
- 27:53Yeah.
- 27:55Let's see any other new thoughts on Joe
- 27:57from either listening back to us or from watching it a fresh time.
- 28:03I'm still not.
- 28:05And this is just a personal like.
- 28:08Personal gripe.
- 28:09I'm still not really sold on just like
- 28:11getting a bunch of not actors to ad lib a bunch of lines.
- 28:14Oh yeah, like the workers and stuff.
- 28:16A lot of the like talk around Joe and just the Joe.
- 28:19Yeah, just Joe like them saying Joe for every other word.
- 28:22I'm just like.
- 28:23Yeah. And that's certainly far more
- 28:27evident when you've got subtitles on
- 28:31because when it's just background pattern, it's whatever.
- 28:36They do say his name a lot.
- 28:37But I some of it I enjoy because,
- 28:41well, I've worked with people just like them.
- 28:43And so like the whole Slim Jim and Salami conversation.
- 28:49Yeah, that gets me.
- 28:51Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 28:52Yeah. Some really funny, good ad lib stuff from that.
- 28:55Yeah. And I know like I know it's all meant to like
- 28:58show a bit like a much more kind of like real feeling
- 29:02and down to earth thing.
- 29:04But I can, you know, suspend disbelief.
- 29:08So it just like it just distracts me from other things.
- 29:12And again, that's a personal gripe and.
- 29:14Toned it down and cleaned up art a little bit of it.
- 29:18Just made it more background,
- 29:21but didn't have to be so direct. Yeah.
- 29:26Yeah, I think the only other thing about this movie
- 29:27that I like probably would change or reduce or adjust a little bit
- 29:31is his relationship with that woman who comes and stays with him
- 29:34for a period of time, like doesn't do enough for me.
- 29:38Yeah. And then she's just sort of gone.
- 29:41I still yeah, I mean, I think that just goes to show like
- 29:45this is just who he is to a lot of people. For sure.
- 29:48Even Tye Sheridan, he's just like he's just the one guy
- 29:51who kind of has his shit together, who feels responsible for it.
- 29:55It seems like the only person he like, aside from Gary,
- 29:59the only person he ever had any kind of like desire
- 30:04to be around was Merle.
- 30:09So just in regards to like getting here and just these kind of being
- 30:13the culmination of like what we've determined are his like serious films.
- 30:19I think in regards to like what comedy wound up being, you know,
- 30:24there's a he said a lot of those probably could have worked their way in here.
- 30:28I don't know. Both these movies are so good for just.
- 30:32His gravitas.
- 30:35Like I said earlier, I don't know if it's the director
- 30:36or just how much he cares about like these roles
- 30:39that just bring out these performances.
- 30:41I like I thought about
- 30:44the interview where he talks about doing Spider-Verse.
- 30:46Now he kept doing the lines and, you know, the director's like,
- 30:49give me more, give me more and tell eventually like,
- 30:51oh, you just want me to go full neck cage.
- 30:53You're just like, so on, he, you know, he's in on it.
- 30:56But like when we get those like really zany performances,
- 31:03it seems maybe at this point in his career, like a little more like.
- 31:08That's what he's hired to do that.
- 31:10Yeah. Well, I mean, that was something that came up.
- 31:13God, I hate having to reference this in G-Force when
- 31:18he was like, oh, I can be anybody.
- 31:19I'll be the mole because then I can use a different voice.
- 31:22And I don't I don't have to just be Nicolas Cage. I can.
- 31:28I can be. Speckles. Yeah.
- 31:33Fuck.
- 31:34Speckles. Yeah.
- 31:37The nodes. Nudes.
- 31:43That is also a movie I end up thinking about more than I should.
- 31:46They fucking cry.
- 31:48Oh, you know, I was fucking I was in the gym the other day,
- 31:50and I cannot stop just juggling about the crude.
- 31:55Fucking the punch monkeys.
- 31:57Punch monkey scene is great.
- 31:59I still I love that clip of them just shoveling food into their gobs.
- 32:03I was thinking about.
- 32:05I completely forgot that we ever watched that movie.
- 32:09And I know.
- 32:12I'm always a fucking.
- 32:13I mean, that makes sense.
- 32:14That's fine.
- 32:15Just say so much to say that the movie slaps
- 32:18is an insult to movies that indeed slap.
- 32:25Well, it slaps and it punches and it kicks.
- 32:28Well, not.
- 32:29Probably.
- 32:32Not as bad as G Force, but.
- 32:34I'm still surprised, though, with like those like family animated films
- 32:38that like he still comes hard in the recording booth.
- 32:42That's a quite a sentence, Sean.
- 32:45I'm going, oh, you you want a full Nick Cage?
- 32:52All right.
- 32:52So did you have other comparative thoughts for Joe and Pig?
- 32:57They both have.
- 33:00Food.
- 33:03They're both depressing, but end up lifting.
- 33:07I mean, yeah, neither of them end well for Nicholas Cage.
- 33:11I don't I don't feel like he's come out ahead on either one.
- 33:16I think he comes out ahead and pay.
- 33:17He makes a friend.
- 33:19He has he's kind of like gets to process.
- 33:24Yeah, he's processing a little bit of his trauma.
- 33:26Yeah, I mean, he comes out the other side.
- 33:28OK, so if say.
- 33:32If Pete died,
- 33:35but I made another friend who was going to talk and be annoying.
- 33:41Does that make me come out ahead?
- 33:45Maybe Pete's the wrong one to if if somebody we all like to died,
- 33:52but you got to have one other friend.
- 33:55Yeah.
- 33:56And then we hot swapped them out.
- 33:58If Pete died.
- 34:00Clearly, Pete is the pig in this situation.
- 34:03I don't think just getting a new friend means he comes out.
- 34:10He also gets a new pig.
- 34:11He doesn't get in.
- 34:12He hasn't gotten a new pig.
- 34:14What isn't that like at the end?
- 34:17You hear you hear you hear a new pig.
- 34:21That's a that's a weird thing to say about Bruce Springsteen.
- 34:27Yeah, I don't think he gets a new pig at the end,
- 34:29like he might get a pig in the future, but
- 34:31he never needed the pig.
- 34:34Like not at the end of the film, but like he does get another pig eventually.
- 34:39Like they allude to that.
- 34:41This is like learning about Smalls's fake backstory from Nick.
- 34:46Yeah, except for Smalls's fake backstory was fucking good.
- 34:54I think you've.
- 34:57Found more in it than I did,
- 35:00because the way I see it is he didn't get his friend back.
- 35:05He may have gotten a new friend, but this new friend is clearly annoying
- 35:10and he's going back to the woods to be by himself again.
- 35:14But he will see a mirror on Thursdays. Yeah.
- 35:19Yeah, I mean, I'm with John.
- 35:21I find this movie more on the uplifting side than than Joe.
- 35:25I mean, like Joe ends because Gary is like, oh, I'm coming out
- 35:28of the bad side of things and, you know,
- 35:31life might not be totally shit.
- 35:34Joe ends, you know, in a sad way, but sort of uplifting way to me.
- 35:39And I don't know, I just feel optimistic for some reason.
- 35:41It seems like her pig ends with me feeling more optimistic.
- 35:46I think I think Peg has has a beautiful and it has just a beautiful,
- 35:50beautiful story about like loss and just humanity and the people around us
- 35:55and how we never lose them. I think it's about pig manatee, but that's
- 36:01again, difference of opinion.
- 36:07All right. So should we put it to the vote?
- 36:10I mean, I'm never going to be, you know, I mean,
- 36:12I'm never going to be unbiased about this.
- 36:13Pig is my favorite film from this entire like thing we've done.
- 36:17So it's hard for me to vote against that in this in this context.
- 36:22And so when it comes down to like, what's a movie?
- 36:25I'm going to suggest to most people.
- 36:28It's going to be Pig more often than Joe,
- 36:30and that I've suggested everyone I've talked to about Nicholas Cage watch pig.
- 36:34Yeah, pigs got the.
- 36:38I think the stronger script, the better performance,
- 36:43better story.
- 36:45I really like Joe, but everyone likes Joe, except that one guy.
- 36:50Yeah, but he probably has reason.
- 36:54He went through a windshield at four in the morning.
- 36:59Yeah, and give a fuck.
- 37:01But yeah, you know, I'm all for pig here.
- 37:04It's it's a terrific film.
- 37:06I love love watching it, and I would love other people to love watching it.
- 37:12Next person who watches it.
- 37:13Tell me if there's a pig noise at the end.
- 37:16100% is a pig noise at the end.
- 37:18All right. So so pig is the winner. Shocking.
- 37:21Yeah, a huge development.
- 37:23Events is it?
- 37:25No.
- 37:27Yeah, so people will be going up against either Wild at Heart or Vampire's Kiss,
- 37:31which interesting head to head.
- 37:35Yeah, it's going to start getting weird.
- 37:37Yeah. I mean, next we're doing the weird movies, but I mean,
- 37:39just the matchups are getting action versus comedy, serious versus weird.
- 37:45I will say, OK, so going back to my weird like fucking brain fart
- 37:48earlier in terms of like
- 37:50Nicolas Cage's physical acting and just the presence he brings to a movie.
- 37:54I have rethought my take on.
- 37:58Conair and him not be necessary for that role.
- 38:01Like, no, it just that that big dumb head needs to be is Cameron Powe.
- 38:06Yep, there's no other poe.
- 38:08Now, I'll admit what I'm wrong.
- 38:11I guess.
- 38:14This one thing I finally admit the truth.
- 38:18Not primal, I will never admit that's good.
- 38:21But you'll admit that it's necessary.
- 38:24I will watch it again.
- 38:25I do want to like I do want to watch it with you, Nick,
- 38:27just because I think watching it alone for this was not the mindset to watch that in.
- 38:34Well, you're in luck because I bring it with me everywhere I go.
- 38:39There you go.
- 38:40Nick is going to be over in 10 minutes. 15.
- 38:44I'm on the bottom of Portland.
- 38:45Yeah.
- 38:46There you go. Well, you can come find us on social media at Cage underscore
- 38:50match underscore pod or a Patreon at Cage match pod.
- 38:54Thanks to our sparkle buddies, Josh, Sean, Josie, Rico, Matt, Adam and Bill
- 38:58and to our cage dancers, Ira, John Freeman, Lance, Nathan and Cameron.
- 39:05Who?
- 39:07Not my best.
- 39:08You can clean it up in post.
- 39:13I won't.
- 39:14Pigs have corkscrew penises.
- 39:18That was ducks.
- 39:19They do, too. Terrifying.
- 39:23Yeah. Nature isn't so cool and unique.
- 39:29Lots of animals have corkscrew penises.
- 39:32Raccoons have a bone in their wiener.
- 39:36Oh, the pig manatee.
- 39:38I think.
- 39:39Oh, my.
- 39:42I.
- 39:48I still think it would be great if Wallace and I did a horse costume
- 39:53like team dress up
- 39:57and he could be the the horse's head and I would be the horse's ass, but
- 40:01he's only a foot tall, so it would be hilarious.
- 40:07Yeah. Wallace is a dog.
- 40:09No, I googled
- 40:14Wenda to see if that was right.
- 40:16And this is like one of the first images that showed up in the Google.
- 40:19Video. Look at the thing.
- 40:26So, dear listener, it is Wenda sitting on the toilet, waving happily.
- 40:30Oh, good. I'm glad I didn't click on that.
- 40:35That's lovely.
- 40:36Yeah, I'm on hotel Wi-Fi.
- 40:38I don't need them knowing I'm looking at that shit.
- 40:44I think a rough one that would be like a lock the door
- 40:48and everyone would have to suffer is dangerous.
- 40:50Just so boring.
- 40:55I mean, Zandily.
- 40:57And it's it's like just in the middle of the most mid.
- 41:01No, Zandily is a good secret one.
- 41:03What you don't want to show anybody.
- 41:06Yes, it's for me only.
- 41:10That's my precious.
- 41:11No, back.
- 41:13Mid is the best way to describe Bangkok dangerous, like
- 41:16y'all shat on it so much.
- 41:17And I'm just like, this movie is so.
- 41:21It is what it is, which is ultimately nothing.
- 41:24Yeah, like it's not.
- 41:25That's the problem.
- 41:26It's not bad and it's not great.
- 41:29It's just fucking.
- 41:30It's just nothing.
- 41:32It's lukewarm tap water.
- 41:34It's yesterday's tap water.
