- 0:00Have you ever noticed that when people talk about boundaries, it can sound like one day
- 0:04you just wake up and now you can confidently say no.
- 0:08And suddenly you're a boundary expert.
- 0:11But that's not how growth usually works.
- 0:14You don't run a marathon without training first.
- 0:17Right?
- 0:18And you don't walk into a gym and now you're able to lift the heaviest weight on day one.
- 0:24And you don't become skilled at boundaries overnight.
- 0:28Boundaries are a skill.
- 0:29And like any skill, they require practice.
- 0:33So today we're talking about how to start practicing boundaries when you're brand new
- 0:37to them.
- 0:39We'll talk about baby knows, how to pick safe people to set boundaries with, and how to
- 0:45learn from others who are setting boundaries, and why God often works through small beginnings.
- 0:54If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much, and wondering why peace still feels
- 1:00so hard to hold on to, you're in the right place.
- 1:03Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people pleaser, and your boundaries coach.
- 1:09Here we talk about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear on
- 1:15what actually matters so that you can build a life that feels lighter, calmer, and more
- 1:21satisfying.
- 1:22So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into this next episode.
- 1:33Welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms.
- 1:35I am your host, Lori Grimes.
- 1:38So over the past few episodes, we have been unpacking what boundaries actually are, and
- 1:43why they matter, and how to identify the warning lights that show up when your life is needing
- 1:50attention.
- 1:51Okay, but understanding boundaries and practicing boundaries are two totally different things.
- 1:58A lot of us know we need boundaries.
- 2:01We just don't know how to begin.
- 2:03So if that's where you are today, friend, I want to encourage you, you don't have to
- 2:07become a boundary expert this week.
- 2:10You just need to take the first step.
- 2:13So let me talk to you a little bit about my own boundary journey, because before we dive
- 2:18into today's topic, I want to share a little of my own story, like how I got here and where
- 2:24did I start.
- 2:25So my boundaries journey began back in 2008.
- 2:30I know that's like a long time ago.
- 2:31What is that?
- 2:3217 years?
- 2:33I can't do math.
- 2:34But when I first was introduced to recovery principles, at the time I was working through
- 2:40codependency, which is really just people pleasing patterns that shaped many of the relationships
- 2:47I was in and the decisions that I was making.
- 2:50So one of the resources that completely changed my perspective, and I've shared it already
- 2:56many times on the podcast, is the Boundaries book by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend.
- 3:02And I'll link it in the show notes, because it was one of the first books that really,
- 3:07really helped me understand not only what boundaries were, but also how deeply rooted
- 3:14they were in biblical principles.
- 3:17But what I quickly learned is that boundaries aren't something you just master by reading
- 3:22a book.
- 3:23Okay?
- 3:24You're not going to read that book and then become an expert.
- 3:26You learn them by practicing them.
- 3:29And one of the greatest gifts I had during that season was a women's recovery group where
- 3:34I could practice these boundaries with safe people.
- 3:38I could practice saying no.
- 3:40I could practice speaking up for myself.
- 3:42I could practice being honest about my needs.
- 3:45And when I stumbled, and trust me, I stumbled plenty, I had people around me who encouraged
- 3:54me, rather than made fun of me or shamed me.
- 3:57And one of the biggest things I learned during that season was that I didn't actually need
- 4:01to know how exactly to set boundaries.
- 4:04In fact, for a long time, the only boundary I thought I had was anger.
- 4:10You know what I mean?
- 4:11Like, I'm going to get angry at you.
- 4:12And that's my boundary.
- 4:14I didn't know how to say no.
- 4:15I didn't know how to ask for what I needed.
- 4:17I did not grow up with that, guys.
- 4:19I did not grow up with asking for what you needed.
- 4:23I didn't know how to communicate a limit early before I was upset.
- 4:29What would happen instead is I'd say yes, when I really just wanted to say no, and I'd
- 4:33over commit, and I would take on too much.
- 4:37I would ignore everything that I needed.
- 4:40And eventually, I'd become so frustrated, I'd be so resentful, and so angry.
- 4:47And I just mistook anger for a boundary.
- 4:51But anger, it really isn't a boundary.
- 4:53It's like a wall.
- 4:55And it's often a signal.
- 4:56It's a warning light.
- 4:57It's telling us some information.
- 4:59It's telling us that something needs attention.
- 5:02But when we use anger as a boundary, we're erecting a wall.
- 5:08We're pushing people away.
- 5:10We're saying, get out.
- 5:11Stay away.
- 5:12And we shut down communication, and we create distance.
- 5:16Guys, when we hit anger, we are at our breaking point.
- 5:20And what we want to do is set a healthy boundary.
- 5:24Because that is going to help us communicate before the resentment starts to build.
- 5:29Before your frustration is exploding at everyone around you.
- 5:33And before we're completely exhausted.
- 5:36So one of the most valuable lessons I learned was how to stop seeing anger as the boundary
- 5:41and start seeing it as a signal.
- 5:44So that shifted everything.
- 5:46Instead of waiting until I was overwhelmed, I began to ask, what is this feeling trying
- 5:51to tell me?
- 5:52What need isn't being communicated?
- 5:55Or what responsibility am I carrying that doesn't even belong to me?
- 6:00Where do I need to set a healthy boundary?
- 6:03That process, guys, did not happen overnight.
- 6:06It took practice.
- 6:08It took support.
- 6:09It took safe people around me.
- 6:11And honestly, it is still taking practice today.
- 6:15And over the years, I've also seen how therapy can provide a similar opportunity, like a
- 6:20safe space.
- 6:21A counselor's office can become a place to practice your communication and try on some
- 6:28healthy limits or a new way of responding.
- 6:32So maybe for you, it's like a recovery group or it's a women's Bible study.
- 6:37Maybe it's your small group at church, your life group.
- 6:41Maybe it's just simply a trusted circle of friends.
- 6:45And the point is that boundaries often grow best in supportive environments.
- 6:50You don't have to do this completely on your own.
- 6:54Sometimes one of the healthiest things you can do is tell someone, hey, I'm working on
- 6:59boundaries right now.
- 7:00I'm trying to stop over committing and I'm learning to say no when I need to.
- 7:06And then ask for their support, bring them into it and ask for their encouragement, their
- 7:11accountability and prayers along the way to support you.
- 7:16And if you're looking for a place to practice, I'd love to invite you to the Healthy Boundaries
- 7:20for Moms Facebook community.
- 7:22And I'm going to put the link in the show notes because I created this community because
- 7:27learning boundaries can feel lonely when you're trying to do it by yourself.
- 7:31I mean, it's one thing to listen to this podcast episode, but it is a total another thing to
- 7:36try to practice what you're learning in the world.
- 7:40And the Facebook group just gives you another place to do that together.
- 7:44It's a place where you can ask questions.
- 7:46It's a place where you can ask for prayer or look for accountability.
- 7:50It's a place where you can share a situation you're struggling with and hear from other
- 7:54moms who are working on the exact same thing.
- 7:57Maybe your baby boundary is this week just saying no to something you've always say yes
- 8:02to.
- 8:03Maybe it's just asking for help or it's not volunteering for one more thing.
- 8:08It's protecting your schedules, moms.
- 8:11And it's simply pausing before you're giving that yes out.
- 8:16So I would love for you to come into the group and share what baby boundary you're working
- 8:19on this week.
- 8:20Let's encourage you.
- 8:21Let's pray for you.
- 8:23Let us celebrate your wins with you.
- 8:24And if you're struggling, let us remind you that growth takes practice because that's
- 8:28what really this episode is about.
- 8:31It's not about becoming this perfect boundary master.
- 8:35It's practicing boundaries.
- 8:38It's one conversation, one baby no, one small step at a time.
- 8:44And God often uses community to help us grow.
- 8:47So I hope the Facebook group can be one of those places for you.
- 8:51Now point one, I want you to not despise small beginnings.
- 8:57I want to start with this verse that perfectly captures what we're talking about today.
- 9:02In Zechariah 4 10 it says, do not despise these small beginnings for the Lord rejoices
- 9:08to see the work begin.
- 9:10I love that phrase.
- 9:12The Lord rejoices to see the work begin.
- 9:14Notice it doesn't say he rejoices when you're done and you're finished.
- 9:17It says he rejoices when it starts.
- 9:20So we often dismiss the small progress and we think, ah, I only said no once, or I still
- 9:26overcommitted the rest of the week, or I wasn't very confident.
- 9:30Or how about that?
- 9:31I should be further along by now.
- 9:33We've all said that one.
- 9:35But throughout scripture, God's just working through these small beginnings.
- 9:38He just needs this seed.
- 9:40Because that seed planted becomes a harvest.
- 9:43And a shepherd boy, right, becomes a king.
- 9:46Or he took a handful of disciples and he changed the world.
- 9:50So we tend to celebrate dramatic transformation.
- 9:52We always love the montage, right?
- 9:55But God often celebrates faithful small beginnings.
- 9:58So if your boundary this week is simply saying, let me check my calendar and get back to you.
- 10:03That's a start guys.
- 10:04If it's saying, I can't commit to that right now.
- 10:08That's a beginning.
- 10:09Don't despise the small beginnings.
- 10:11Okay, so point two.
- 10:13Start with baby no's.
- 10:15One mistake many people make is starting with the hardest relationship in their life.
- 10:21They decide, okay, I'm ready to set boundaries.
- 10:23And they go right to the person who's ignored their boundaries for years.
- 10:28And that's like deciding your first workout should be 50 pound dumbbells, right?
- 10:33Instead, just start with a baby no.
- 10:36Like practice in a low risk situation.
- 10:39One thing you can say is just, no thank you.
- 10:42Or that won't work for me.
- 10:43Or try on the phrase, I'll have to pass this time.
- 10:48Because a goal isn't perfection.
- 10:50The goal is to get you practicing.
- 10:53Every healthy boundary you set will strengthen your confidence for the next one.
- 10:57It builds.
- 10:58Just like exercise.
- 11:00Building muscle.
- 11:01It builds.
- 11:02So point three.
- 11:03Practice with safe people.
- 11:05Not every boundary has to be tested in those hard relationships first.
- 11:11Sometimes God gives us safe people around us to practice.
- 11:15Think about the people who love you and the people who generally want to see you get the
- 11:19best for you.
- 11:20Or the people who don't make every boundary feel personal.
- 11:24Those relationships can be the training grounds.
- 11:27And you might even tell a trusted friend, I'm working on not over committing myself.
- 11:33Or you can tell them, I'm trying to create more margin in my schedule.
- 11:37And this leads me to another verse that I think is great here.
- 11:40Ecclesiastes 4, 9 through 10.
- 11:43It says, two are better than one because they have a good reward for their toll.
- 11:49For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.
- 11:52But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up.
- 11:58I think we sometimes assume boundary work is something we do by ourselves.
- 12:03But growth often happens in community.
- 12:06Sometimes we need people who remind us that it's okay to say no.
- 12:10Sometimes we need those people around us who are encouraging us when boundaries start
- 12:15to feel a little uncomfortable.
- 12:17Or how about we need people who celebrate our progress when we're focused on the things
- 12:21we're not doing right or perfectly.
- 12:23You don't have to do this alone friend.
- 12:25Okay.
- 12:26So point four, become a student of boundaries.
- 12:28This was one hack I totally did with boundaries.
- 12:31I just paid attention to people who were setting boundaries around me.
- 12:37Like if someone were to say no, I watched how they said it.
- 12:40I noticed what about it felt healthy, what I thought felt respectful.
- 12:45You may hear things like, you know, thanks for thinking of me, but I can't make it.
- 12:49I heard that one a lot.
- 12:51So I really use that one.
- 12:53Or that doesn't work for my schedule.
- 12:55Or I'm not available that day.
- 12:57Let me think about it and get back to you.
- 12:59Many of us didn't grow up with these healthy examples of boundaries around us.
- 13:03I know I didn't.
- 13:05Sometimes we need to borrow examples from people who are practicing them around us.
- 13:09Watch how healthy people communicate their limits and watch how they remain kind without
- 13:15the over explanation, you know, the paragraph, the whole narrative on why they said no.
- 13:22Watch how they just stay clear without becoming defensive.
- 13:25They don't take it personally and it's not personal to them.
- 13:30And here's something also I've noticed.
- 13:32People who respect their own boundaries are often going to respect your boundaries too.
- 13:37That doesn't mean they're perfect, but it can kind of help you navigate and find those
- 13:41safe people.
- 13:42When someone can hear a no without becoming offended, that's valuable information.
- 13:48Or how about when someone communicates their own limits in a respectful way, again, that's
- 13:53valuable information.
- 13:55Healthy people understand that boundaries are not a rejection of them.
- 14:00They're just information.
- 14:02And those people may be some of the safest people to practice with.
- 14:06So pay attention as you're going throughout your week.
- 14:09Point five, invite people into the process.
- 14:12So we kind of touched on that.
- 14:13One of the healthiest things we can do is to bring people into our growth.
- 14:18Not because we owe everyone explanation, because we don't, but because healthy relationships
- 14:23often benefit from context.
- 14:26It's good for them to know that you're working on healthier boundaries.
- 14:30It's not them.
- 14:32And that you're just trying to not automatically say yes.
- 14:35That kind of communicates to them what's going on.
- 14:38Or the fact you're saying, I'm learning to create more margin, tells them you just need
- 14:43more time.
- 14:44And here's what I've discovered.
- 14:46Sometimes when we give ourselves permission to grow, we in turn give other people permission
- 14:52to grow too.
- 14:53Your boundary may become the permission slip that someone else needed.
- 14:58A friend may realize that she doesn't have to say yes to everything.
- 15:02Your spouse may begin communicating needs more honestly.
- 15:06Your children may learn that healthy people can be loving and still have limits.
- 15:11And sometimes healthy boundaries just become contagious.
- 15:16You may not even discover that someone wants to work on their boundaries with you.
- 15:21Maybe it's a friend.
- 15:22Maybe it's a spouse.
- 15:24Or maybe it's just someone from your small group.
- 15:26Maybe it's someone even from the Facebook community.
- 15:30Discomfort often happens better when we don't do it alone.
- 15:34So point six, expect to feel awkward.
- 15:37I think, we think, we're going to just step into this and we're going to be able to do
- 15:42it.
- 15:43And it's going to be fine.
- 15:44But you are going to feel a little uncomfortable.
- 15:49Like it's okay that your voice shakes a little bit.
- 15:51And it's okay that your first attempt comes out a little awkward.
- 15:56Discomfort doesn't mean that you're doing it wrong, friend.
- 15:58It just means that you're trying something new.
- 16:01You're a little wobbly.
- 16:03Growth is uncomfortable before it becomes natural, right?
- 16:07A shaky boundary is still a boundary.
- 16:09And an imperfect boundary is you making progress.
- 16:13A delayed boundary is still better than no boundary at all, right?
- 16:18If you go to the gym and it's delayed, you know, you're delayed getting to the gym, it's
- 16:23still a workout, right?
- 16:25So here, point seven, boundaries are lifelong progress or practice, I'm sorry.
- 16:30Before we wrap up, I just want to share one more thought.
- 16:31I started this boundaries journey, if you remember at the beginning of this podcast
- 16:35or this episode, I started in 2008.
- 16:39That means I've been working on it for, what is that, 18 years.
- 16:43And for some people that might sound discouraging.
- 16:46You might think, oh my gosh, Lori's been working on this for 18 years.
- 16:49I'm going to be doing this forever.
- 16:51And honestly, yes.
- 16:52Yes, she will be.
- 16:53But not because boundaries are hard and not because you're doing it wrong.
- 16:58It's because boundaries are just a part of a healthy life.
- 17:01I mean, you're not going to exercise for a month and be done, right?
- 17:07So why would we think that wouldn't be the same thing for boundaries?
- 17:11You don't eat healthy in a week and that's it.
- 17:15And so we need to stop putting this timeline and this time limit on it.
- 17:22Think about organization.
- 17:23You don't organize your house once and never have to organize it again, right?
- 17:28You don't look at your finances and do a budget once and then never have to look at it again.
- 17:35So the things that matter most in life are going to require maintenance.
- 17:38Boundaries, my friends, are no different.
- 17:41You're never going to reach a point where life stops changing, right?
- 17:45Your seasons are going to change.
- 17:46Your children are going to grow.
- 17:48Your marriage will evolve.
- 17:50Your responsibilities will even shift.
- 17:53And as your life changes, your boundaries will need to be examined.
- 17:57You're going to have to adjust them.
- 17:58You might even have to strengthen them and sometimes completely redesign them.
- 18:04And that's normal.
- 18:05The goal isn't to finish your boundaries mastery.
- 18:09The goal is to become someone who pays attention to them.
- 18:13Someone who's evaluating them or notices them when something feels off.
- 18:18Someone who's willing to make some adjustments when life changes.
- 18:22So I find that encouraging because it means that you don't have to figure out every boundary
- 18:27for the rest of your life this week.
- 18:29You don't have to get it just perfect.
- 18:31I think God's just inviting us into starting to practice the boundary He has in front of
- 18:36you right now.
- 18:38It's like one conversation, one baby no.
- 18:41One small step at a time.
- 18:44So friend, I want you to invite God along this journey.
- 18:49Ask Him what boundary you need to work on.
- 18:52And invite your friends along.
- 18:54Your support system.
- 18:55Be looking for those people in your life that you can practice these boundaries with this
- 19:00week.
- 19:01Hey friend.
