- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. Today, I'll talk about that, John makes sermon
- 0:11Speaker 1: illustrations about soda and hosts SA Santa convention at the church. Meanwhile,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I tell you the story of Elmo testifying before Congress
- 0:19Speaker 1: and wonder if police dogs know that they're cops. Plus
- 0:22Speaker 1: a conversation about mercy and sin and why our perspective
- 0:25Speaker 1: of how God sees us is so important. Today's episode
- 0:28Speaker 1: is not sponsored by Rainbows. We just escaped from prison.
- 0:31Speaker 1: But first a word from our actual sponsor, What's up
- 0:42Speaker 1: out there podcast?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Listening world as John and Johnny not leaving you hang
- 0:46Speaker 2: him a coming back for another week, and talk about.
- 0:48Speaker 1: That spring we're springing forward because it's we've already sprung forward.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Well I'm saying we're oh, we're a part of it
- 0:58Speaker 1: because we're.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Did you post your annual spring forward thing or have
- 1:02Speaker 2: you stop doing that?
- 1:03Speaker 1: I haven't done it this year. I need to do
- 1:05Speaker 1: it next time. Every Daylight Savings, whether it's spring or fall,
- 1:08Speaker 1: I post the same old joke and it's a news
- 1:11Speaker 1: story that I made up using some old photoshop program,
- 1:15Speaker 1: where it's a man in a full body cast in
- 1:18Speaker 1: the photo in a hospital bed. He's like intraction and
- 1:22Speaker 1: it says Daylight savings, disaster man on trampoline, springs forward,
- 1:27Speaker 1: falls back. That's one of my favorites, and I always
- 1:31Speaker 1: post I'm going to post this every year until it
- 1:33Speaker 1: gets the attention I feel it deserves. And then you
- 1:35Speaker 1: just stopped and it never really fully got the attention
- 1:38Speaker 1: I felt it deserves.
- 1:39Speaker 2: But you got too big for the joke, Johnny, and
- 1:41Speaker 2: I am here.
- 1:42Speaker 1: To call it changed. I'm sorry. So if you hear
- 1:46Speaker 1: any clatter behind us, clatter. The reason I used clatter,
- 1:51Speaker 1: we sprang from our chairs to see what was the matter.
- 1:55Speaker 1: The church. Our church is very unique, and I will
- 1:58Speaker 1: say that about this church. I should give proper credit
- 2:01Speaker 1: to the culture of our church, because when I moved
- 2:04Speaker 1: here in two thousand and six to take the job
- 2:09Speaker 1: cleaning the church and possibly teaching Sunday School and finding
- 2:12Speaker 1: my way in ministry, I was pretty lost. I had
- 2:14Speaker 1: no idea what I was going to do. And like
- 2:17Speaker 1: a year and a half later, I was starting to
- 2:18Speaker 1: do stand up and I was doing all these comedy
- 2:21Speaker 1: bits and our announcements and I was doing all this stuff.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Well a lot of that's the culture of this church
- 2:24Speaker 1: is very just open to part of its Nashville in general,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we're an entertainment town. But I do feel like Pastor
- 2:31Speaker 1: Andrew the thing he built here was just there was
- 2:33Speaker 1: a lot of dreamers here and he was just so like, Oh,
- 2:36Speaker 1: if you want to do that, do it here in
- 2:37Speaker 1: this service. And he would just give you like the
- 2:39Speaker 1: wind under your seals or under your sels he.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Got he can really get under your sale.
- 2:45Speaker 1: He really like Marilyn Monroe was holding my dress down. No,
- 2:50Speaker 1: he was wind under my saals, But you are the
- 2:52Speaker 1: wind under my saih. But anyway, I give Pastor Andrew
- 2:57Speaker 1: and this church a lot of credit for doing what
- 3:00Speaker 1: I'm doing. But having said that, we've attracted some interesting
- 3:04Speaker 1: events over the years. We've done Christian Comedy Association conferences here.
- 3:08Speaker 1: We're a bunch of like comedians who are faith based
- 3:11Speaker 1: just descend on our church for three days and it's
- 3:15Speaker 1: you know, two hundred comedians, which is not as fun
- 3:19Speaker 1: as you think it is. It's a lot of works,
- 3:21Speaker 1: those guys. It's a lot of work. But I will
- 3:23Speaker 1: say this one takes the cake now. Because Pastor and
- 3:27Speaker 1: Her call me today and he said, where are you
- 3:29Speaker 1: the next three days? I said, I actually leave him
- 3:31Speaker 1: for my bus tour today. But I'm coming over to
- 3:32Speaker 1: podcast with John here soon and he said, get here
- 3:35Speaker 1: as soon as you can. He goes. The next three days,
- 3:38Speaker 1: we have one hundred plus Santa's who have taken over
- 3:43Speaker 1: the church for the Santa Summit, profession professional Santas. Our
- 3:48Speaker 1: former children's pastor, Pastor Roy Stone, is a Santa half
- 3:53Speaker 1: the year and he he lobbied for our church, even
- 3:59Speaker 1: though he lives in Florida, he lobbied for our church
- 4:01Speaker 1: to host this Santa Summit. And I mean it's everything
- 4:03Speaker 1: you can imagine. It's what whatever you're picturing right now,
- 4:06Speaker 1: it's it's that, it's a it's a lot of First
- 4:08Speaker 1: of all, it's a lot of red cars in the
- 4:10Speaker 1: parking lot. It's fun at a lot of red sleighs,
- 4:14Speaker 1: if you will. And then you get in there's booths
- 4:16Speaker 1: that they're selling like belts and hats and you know,
- 4:20Speaker 1: black boots and all kinds of Santa accoutra mall. I'm
- 4:25Speaker 1: assuming there's gonna be sessions. What are you doing? John?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Got it? I've got it. You're you're putting your your
- 4:30Speaker 1: There's a lot of like, say, who are you a
- 4:34Speaker 1: are you a Santa? Do you want to be a
- 4:36Speaker 1: better Santa. What is being a Santa meme? Right? What
- 4:38Speaker 1: is Santa mean? I don't know what the sessions are
- 4:41Speaker 1: going to be. Yeah, is it like a lot of
- 4:42Speaker 1: Ted talks.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I don't forget Santa is really alive?
- 4:45Speaker 1: Yeah, in your heart, that's true. Maybe the maybe the
- 4:48Speaker 1: real friends were the Santa that we met along the way. Anyway,
- 4:52Speaker 1: they are.
- 4:53Speaker 2: The calls are coming from inside the sleigh.
- 4:55Speaker 1: They are. They are in our church, a lot of them.
- 4:57Speaker 1: They're getting ready because it starts tonight and they are
- 5:00Speaker 1: being a little bit rowdy. So if you hear a clatter,
- 5:03Speaker 1: that's what's the matter. Yeah, it's a lot of Santa's
- 5:05Speaker 1: out there, and I'm assuming they're giving beard grooming tips
- 5:08Speaker 1: right now. There's a lot going on.
- 5:10Speaker 2: You can see some Santas that go as Santa all
- 5:14Speaker 2: year and.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Then the ones who just put on the beard and
- 5:18Speaker 1: it's a it's a it's a plate. It's a place
- 5:20Speaker 1: like I wore a red shirt today. Okay, I could
- 5:22Speaker 1: walk out there, we're like hey, you know, like I'm
- 5:24Speaker 1: I'm see you guys in November. Look at this nube.
- 5:30Speaker 1: They started mocking you. Look at this guy.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I member Roy, because Roy is when we say Roy's
- 5:37Speaker 2: a professional Santa, like he's been featured on magazine covers.
- 5:41Speaker 1: It's a character. It is wild, like if I we
- 5:45Speaker 1: need to put a photo, I'm gonna have them drop
- 5:47Speaker 1: a photo. If we clip this out, you need to
- 5:49Speaker 1: see what Pastorally, it's almost like a throwback Santa. It's
- 5:52Speaker 1: like a Father Christmas Nick. But it's got a little
- 5:55Speaker 1: steampunk in it too. Yeah, where he's got a little
- 5:57Speaker 1: bit of the tiny spectacles him and it's it's got
- 6:01Speaker 1: a little bit of like a fun HG. Wells vibe
- 6:04Speaker 1: to it.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Does pocket watchy Yeah, Yeah, it's very like there's texture
- 6:09Speaker 2: in the vest and like there's a lot going on.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I mean, you would not know. It's very well thought out. Yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 1: it's not just like you know, generic, it's not just
- 6:18Speaker 1: a Coca Cola bottle. All the people out there with
- 6:20Speaker 1: your generic Santas. Listen, come on, man, you don't even
- 6:22Speaker 1: put some put something on it. He has a little
- 6:24Speaker 1: like wax at the end of the mustache sometimes where
- 6:26Speaker 1: it's like it curls up. I've seen that before. That's
- 6:29Speaker 1: a new thing. You know. If you thought about going
- 6:30Speaker 1: out there and doing some comedy.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I bet you can really slay them, Johnny.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I thought that's what Andrew was gonna call me to do.
- 6:37Speaker 1: When he said we got the sands here. I thought
- 6:38Speaker 1: he was gonna be like, and you got to come
- 6:40Speaker 1: over here. He was actually saying, get over here and
- 6:42Speaker 1: just roll tape. Just just bring a pad and pen
- 6:45Speaker 1: and start riding down.
- 6:46Speaker 2: And we walked when we pulled in the parking lot
- 6:48Speaker 2: and the guy was walking out and he had he
- 6:50Speaker 2: had a red i think, long sleeve shirt on red
- 6:54Speaker 2: shorts and a big white beard just walking through the
- 6:56Speaker 2: parking lot to his car slash sleigh. And I was like,
- 7:00Speaker 2: I mean again, it's just I told the staff yesterday,
- 7:03Speaker 2: I was like, this is a little more indicative probably
- 7:06Speaker 2: of what mine and your time together on staff was like,
- 7:09Speaker 2: uh huh, because we were hosting these kinds of things
- 7:12Speaker 2: all the time. But it's not on your ministry bingo card.
- 7:15Speaker 2: It's not like you go, you know what, I want
- 7:18Speaker 2: to go into pastoral ministry so that someday, right I
- 7:22Speaker 2: could be surrounded by one hundred Santas walking outside of
- 7:26Speaker 2: my office while I work, Like, I don't know, I mean,
- 7:28Speaker 2: I think it's kind of cool. You think every other
- 7:30Speaker 2: church has that. No, does it help the kingdom?
- 7:33Speaker 1: Maybe not. Does it grow the church at all? Nope?
- 7:38Speaker 1: Does it make us a lot of money? It didn't
- 7:40Speaker 1: do that either. But no.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I mean they're really nice guys and we're helping them
- 7:44Speaker 2: host and it's Roy's guys, And it's.
- 7:46Speaker 1: For the kids, John, it's for the kids who listen.
- 7:49Speaker 1: The Wonder of Christmas very important.
- 7:53Speaker 2: We're fans of it, right, I mean as a church,
- 7:56Speaker 2: we don't necessarily teach the Wonder of Christmas being about
- 7:59Speaker 2: Santa particular, what with the whole Jesus story and everything.
- 8:03Speaker 1: But this has got a lot We're gonna get a
- 8:05Speaker 1: lot of emails, John, how would you send an angry email?
- 8:07Speaker 2: To send your angry email to hell outa Talk about
- 8:10Speaker 2: that podcast dot com.
- 8:11Speaker 1: We will read it on the air and then you'll
- 8:13Speaker 1: hear me crumpling it up and throw it in the
- 8:15Speaker 1: waste basket. You know, why don't you send it straight
- 8:16Speaker 1: to our trash folder. Yeah, that's at trash at talk
- 8:19Speaker 1: about That podcast dot com. I need to make that
- 8:22Speaker 1: an email for my website. I've always wanted to do that.
- 8:24Speaker 1: If somebody says, like, how would I get in touch
- 8:25Speaker 1: with it. I'd be like trash at johnnyw dot com.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Just have it be a real place. I like that.
- 8:31Speaker 1: That would be fun. I need to do that. Oh,
- 8:35Speaker 1: I did something kind of cool. We've not debriefed this,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and I didn't know if I was going to actually
- 8:40Speaker 1: share the story unless anything came of it. But it's
- 8:43Speaker 1: one of those things like I want to share my
- 8:44Speaker 1: journey along the way. I was part of an audition
- 8:47Speaker 1: Saturday at Zany's, my home club in Nashville for the
- 8:51Speaker 1: tonight show for the producer of Books. I got invited
- 8:56Speaker 1: to be a part of it, which is cool to
- 8:57Speaker 1: do my five minutes with some other great comic who
- 9:00Speaker 1: came in from all over the country. Some of them
- 9:01Speaker 1: were Nashville natives, but some of them came from all
- 9:03Speaker 1: over the country. And we got to the guy who's
- 9:07Speaker 1: the guy who books the comedians on Jimmy Fallon was
- 9:10Speaker 1: in the audience and it was a packed house and
- 9:12Speaker 1: I had a good set. I mean, you never know
- 9:14Speaker 1: what's going to happen, so that's why I think I'll
- 9:16Speaker 1: just tell everybody, Hey, we did a thing and it
- 9:18Speaker 1: was fun, and now we see what happens. But it's
- 9:20Speaker 1: cool sometimes you just do it and it's a thing
- 9:23Speaker 1: you did.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I mean, I don't want to have this conversation on
- 9:25Speaker 2: the air if you don't want to Oh, I don't care.
- 9:27Speaker 1: But like, when do you hear Oh, I don't know.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I don't know if you do hear anything. It's I
- 9:32Speaker 1: think I had a good set. That's all I can
- 9:33Speaker 1: tell you. I mean, I don't you know, I don't
- 9:36Speaker 1: really know what happens from here, because that's how showbiz
- 9:38Speaker 1: works is you just kind of slide a hurry up
- 9:40Speaker 1: and wait. But it was just fun. Honestly. The really
- 9:44Speaker 1: cool thing about it was that I was asked to
- 9:45Speaker 1: do it. Hey, would you want to do a set
- 9:47Speaker 1: on this? It's during the Nashville Comedy Festival. There's fifty
- 9:50Speaker 1: or sixty shows that happened this week, a million amazing shows,
- 9:53Speaker 1: and this was one of the events. Was a showcase
- 9:57Speaker 1: for the booker of the night show. And I'm never home.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I'm always gone on shows. And then I'm happening to
- 10:03Speaker 1: be home a few days this past week and they
- 10:05Speaker 1: were like, do you want to do this? And I
- 10:06Speaker 1: was like one hundred percent. So we flew in early
- 10:08Speaker 1: from my show in Detroit.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Oh And it's your home turf and all, and that's
- 10:12Speaker 2: kind of cool.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it was really neat. And was it at the
- 10:14Speaker 1: lab or is at the lab? Yeah, so it's really
- 10:17Speaker 1: nice and intimate and which honestly, that's about how many
- 10:20Speaker 1: people come to tonight show. What's funny about it is
- 10:23Speaker 1: it's a very small studio. It looks big on TV, but.
- 10:25Speaker 2: It's about when they go out of an audience, if
- 10:27Speaker 2: you Yeah, I noticed, like my wife and I laugh,
- 10:30Speaker 2: she can't guesstimate the number of people. Yeah, when you're
- 10:33Speaker 2: a pastor, you kind of used to like, Okay, there's
- 10:35Speaker 2: like fifty people here, but it could be fifty or
- 10:37Speaker 2: five hundred, you know what her And which if you're
- 10:40Speaker 2: in church, you always say it's five hundred.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Absolutely that's what you do.
- 10:43Speaker 2: But I mean you I noticed that when Jimmy Fallon
- 10:45Speaker 2: and them go up into the into the crowd, it's
- 10:47Speaker 2: a lot fewer people than most people would think.
- 10:49Speaker 1: But they lay them out nice, you know what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 10:51Speaker 1: And it's all about miking them correctly and all that stuff.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So anyway, we'll see what happens. But I just wanted
- 10:56Speaker 1: to share that that I got. I just think it's
- 10:57Speaker 1: a cool little thing. It's just it's like the next
- 11:00Speaker 1: thing you do, like, oh, I got a cool opportunity.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I want to share it with the people who care
- 11:04Speaker 1: about my career. But that's not to say like I'm
- 11:06Speaker 1: going to be on this night show. It's just that
- 11:07Speaker 1: I got the audition. But I mean that's the next step.
- 11:10Speaker 1: That's a step towards. You can't be on there without auditioning.
- 11:13Speaker 1: That's true. I mean that's true. They're not. Probably you
- 11:16Speaker 1: can't win the lottery unless you play. So I encourge
- 11:18Speaker 1: you guys to get out there and buy as many
- 11:20Speaker 1: lottery tickets. That's right. So so far we've encouraged Santa Yeah,
- 11:24Speaker 1: lottery tickets, yeah, and just in general chasing a dream yeah, John.
- 11:29Speaker 1: You know what else? We like to chase money and
- 11:32Speaker 1: we want to We want to thank our advertisers for
- 11:36Speaker 1: helping us keep the lights on. We don't make a
- 11:37Speaker 1: ton of money from the show, as you know if
- 11:39Speaker 1: you listen, but we keep the lights on and that's
- 11:42Speaker 1: because of our wonderful advertising. Let's take a minute here
- 11:44Speaker 1: a few words from some of our find sponsors.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Well, I, for one, want you to know that if
- 12:01Speaker 2: you don't make it on the tonight show.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not going to ever feel no differently about you.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Oh that's nice. I feel the tonight show, I'll feel like, well,
- 12:09Speaker 1: look they made the choice. Knows what he's doing over there. Listen.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I want to actually, I want to say this, No
- 12:16Speaker 2: boy and none over one thinks just because I'm Johnny's
- 12:18Speaker 2: best friend or whatever. But I've been saying this since
- 12:21Speaker 2: the beginning. I'm sorry, they'd be fools not to have
- 12:24Speaker 2: you on.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Come on, john.
- 12:25Speaker 2: It's kind of like, I'm sorry. I'm a little still wounded.
- 12:29Speaker 2: When we got to fly to California. Yeah, and I
- 12:33Speaker 2: watched you get four yes is on a g T
- 12:37Speaker 2: and standing oh from two of them?
- 12:38Speaker 1: Right, uh three three three The judges stood up and
- 12:41Speaker 1: I got two standing ovation from the audience. Yeah.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean, guys, Johnny Slade on the biggest
- 12:46Speaker 2: stage in America.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and the producers like, you know what it's gonna go.
- 12:50Speaker 2: No, I don't like. I don't like what they did.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And I have a little bit. I mean, someone's going
- 12:56Speaker 2: to stand up for Johnny.
- 12:57Speaker 1: It could still happen. I mean that was years ago,
- 13:00Speaker 1: almost three years ago. But it's done. We're going back. No.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I mean, what's funny is a producer did reach out
- 13:06Speaker 1: the next year, a different producer casting producer reached out,
- 13:09Speaker 1: not knowing that I'd already auditioned the year before. They're like,
- 13:11Speaker 1: we'd love to have you on season seventeen. They were
- 13:13Speaker 1: gonna fly me in the whole thing again. Yeah, And
- 13:15Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, just so you know, I've been
- 13:17Speaker 1: through this and this is what happened. And I told
- 13:19Speaker 1: him the whole story, and they were like, oh, yeah,
- 13:21Speaker 1: you probably want to wait another year before you audition again.
- 13:24Speaker 1: And I was like, okay, but you weren't even on
- 13:25Speaker 1: TV now. They showed me in the background of someone
- 13:31Speaker 1: else's but no one saw your act, right, no one
- 13:33Speaker 1: saw the act. Yeah. But I think it's just a
- 13:35Speaker 1: thing of like if you go back again, it's like, oh,
- 13:39Speaker 1: we saw this guy last year. You knowed they need
- 13:41Speaker 1: to forget you. I guess maybe I don't know. I
- 13:43Speaker 1: kind of think you don't need that. I mean, honestly,
- 13:45Speaker 1: I need to have a better story. I'm going to
- 13:46Speaker 1: have a man you wait to the story that I
- 13:47Speaker 1: tell him. When I get I go on this time,
- 13:49Speaker 1: it's going to be like, yeah, I lost my dog.
- 13:52Speaker 1: I lost my house. We could make I mean I could.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I have lost a couple house. I've lost a couple
- 13:58Speaker 1: of dogs since then. Yeah, we didn't even have to dogs. Now.
- 14:00Speaker 1: It's so sad in my house. It's very quiet at
- 14:02Speaker 1: my house. Yeah, we are. We're pondering because I'm curries
- 14:06Speaker 1: home from the road because I'm doing some shows with
- 14:07Speaker 1: Nate and some shows with John Christ in May. So
- 14:10Speaker 1: she's basically off the road for like a month and
- 14:12Speaker 1: a half. Oh, and she's like she's going to get
- 14:15Speaker 1: a dog. She's thinking about fostering. Fostering is like hard
- 14:18Speaker 1: to let go. Fostering is like you get a dog
- 14:21Speaker 1: and then you have to decide do I take this
- 14:23Speaker 1: dog back to the place that is the rescue and
- 14:26Speaker 1: say like we're done fostering now, knowing that it's just
- 14:29Speaker 1: back in harm's way again.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Why isn't not just adopting? Does anyone ever bring the
- 14:32Speaker 2: dog back?
- 14:33Speaker 1: Oh? They do. I mean sometimes you foster a dog
- 14:35Speaker 1: and then you find them there forever home and then
- 14:37Speaker 1: you get the next dog. Some people just foster all
- 14:39Speaker 1: the time, just like people do foster kids like But
- 14:42Speaker 1: a lot of times what happens is you foster the
- 14:43Speaker 1: dog and you fall in love. You get a soul
- 14:45Speaker 1: bond with this dog. Yeah, well that's what dogs do.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I know, man, I'm afraid of that happening. But you
- 14:52Speaker 1: ever said you ever had a dog?
- 14:53Speaker 2: They didn't wag his tail when you walked up me
- 14:55Speaker 2: except the ones attacking you.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Yeah. Even then, they really they seem to really like
- 14:59Speaker 1: it into it.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Wagon.
- 15:05Speaker 1: That's like the guy said, like, do you think a
- 15:06Speaker 1: cop dog knows that he's a cop? Like a canine dog,
- 15:09Speaker 1: he just thinks like, well, this is fun. I got
- 15:12Speaker 1: to take a guy down and chew on his arm.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Does he know that he's a cop? Right? You know?
- 15:17Speaker 1: I don't think so. He just thinks like, I got
- 15:19Speaker 1: some cheese after this. That was pretty cool.
- 15:22Speaker 2: He's not thinking I got to do my duty in
- 15:24Speaker 2: the line of danger.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not right, or danger danger in the line
- 15:28Speaker 1: of sorry, duty in the line of danger? Danger? Are
- 15:31Speaker 1: you sure you want to be an author? If you
- 15:34Speaker 1: want to find out more about John's books, go to
- 15:35Speaker 1: Duty in the Line of Danger dot org dot com.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Hey, Jonny's about that?
- 15:41Speaker 1: Okay, that's my quarter of the week.
- 15:43Speaker 2: The segment we call they talked about that. Richard Sibbs,
- 15:59Speaker 2: which I've quoted multiple times before, Puritan English Puritan theologian
- 16:05Speaker 2: born fifteen seventy seven. So this is gonna be interesting
- 16:09Speaker 2: old school, yes, and people have like.
- 16:13Speaker 1: First of all, what are these women doing not wearing hats?
- 16:15Speaker 1: Is that part of the well, you.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Know, growing up, Like I mean, when you read like
- 16:19Speaker 2: Scarlet Letter and things like that, you think of Puritans
- 16:21Speaker 2: or even like Pilgrims, or you think of those early
- 16:24Speaker 2: as like I think very anti grace and truly I
- 16:30Speaker 2: think some of the best there's a book called Gentle
- 16:34Speaker 2: and Luwly by Dane Ortland that's one of the it's
- 16:38Speaker 2: basically taking a lot of Puritan theology on grace and
- 16:42Speaker 2: how God really feels about you, And I mean it's
- 16:44Speaker 2: I think we're very backwards on what a lot of
- 16:47Speaker 2: these guys actually were teaching and writing at that time,
- 16:50Speaker 2: because some of I think the richest, deepest viewpoint of
- 16:52Speaker 2: God's love is there. But this is interesting because so
- 16:57Speaker 2: this has actually came from I do one of these
- 17:00Speaker 2: things a Christian quote email among my other many quote things,
- 17:04Speaker 2: and usually those are pretty reliable, but now I always
- 17:06Speaker 2: check everything because you've.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Outcry on the podcast we're platforming. Sorry about that, seriously.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Ouries were very weird, but incoming.
- 17:21Speaker 2: So I always check it, you know, And this one
- 17:23Speaker 2: it says it's a modern rendition.
- 17:25Speaker 1: You can't find the original.
- 17:27Speaker 2: I checked all my normal sources because I'm gonna read
- 17:29Speaker 2: the modern rendition, then I'll read the one that I
- 17:31Speaker 2: think it came from.
- 17:33Speaker 1: I think they're both valid.
- 17:34Speaker 2: But so this is not probably how Richard SIPs actually
- 17:37Speaker 2: said this in Middle slash Old English in somewhere in
- 17:41Speaker 2: the sixteen hundreds. But he said, or it's purported to
- 17:46Speaker 2: have said, if we could send more than he could pardon,
- 17:50Speaker 2: then we might have some reason to despair if we
- 17:54Speaker 2: could send more than he could pardon.
- 17:57Speaker 1: And I thought, well, that's great.
- 17:58Speaker 2: The original quote that is actually verified is that there
- 18:03Speaker 2: is more mercy in Christ than sin in us, more
- 18:07Speaker 2: mercy in Christ than sin in us. I think I
- 18:10Speaker 2: still I told the Church the other day. I mean,
- 18:13Speaker 2: I don't know if it's humanity or if it's my
- 18:15Speaker 2: enneagram sixisms, if it's my it's just general wiring and disposition,
- 18:22Speaker 2: my sense of needing to self improve, or what of
- 18:26Speaker 2: those things are. But again the hardest thing for me
- 18:30Speaker 2: to believe is that I'm beloved by God. And and
- 18:37Speaker 2: it's not, you know, because I think again, it's not
- 18:39Speaker 2: just like sins of commission, right, it's sins of omission.
- 18:45Speaker 2: All the things I should be doing that don't do well,
- 18:47Speaker 2: and then the things I shouldn't be doing that I do.
- 18:50Speaker 2: It's Roman seven, and.
- 18:53Speaker 1: I mean just it.
- 18:56Speaker 2: I know this because I've been set free from this.
- 18:58Speaker 2: But one does not remain free unless one remains near
- 19:04Speaker 2: the thing that sets you free the first time. So
- 19:09Speaker 2: Jesus said, you're free indeed, meaning like it's real, like
- 19:12Speaker 2: it's actually free from these things. But the only way again,
- 19:16Speaker 2: I think you stay free indeed, is to stay near Jesus.
- 19:20Speaker 1: So you have to return.
- 19:22Speaker 2: I don't mean you return because you lost salvation or
- 19:25Speaker 2: all those things. I mean the confidence that comes in
- 19:31Speaker 2: humility before Christ, of his ultimate love for you. I
- 19:35Speaker 2: don't think I've never met a person, and certainly I
- 19:38Speaker 2: myself am not a person that I just default to
- 19:42Speaker 2: that that there is a Again, what's the old analogy.
- 19:46Speaker 2: We're walking up an escalator going down, right, So when
- 19:51Speaker 2: i'm I have to be in motion towards the up
- 19:53Speaker 2: or I will naturally be brought down and by brought down.
- 19:58Speaker 2: We would say into sin, into the yes. But I
- 20:01Speaker 2: think I think the greatest sin that I live in
- 20:04Speaker 2: is to not fully trust in the love of the Father.
- 20:07Speaker 2: For me, I think that's where the sin really is,
- 20:10Speaker 2: because sin, by basic definition and scripture and the original languages,
- 20:14Speaker 2: is to simply miss a mark or miss a target.
- 20:17Speaker 2: I'm not downplaying and I'm uplaying it. The major mark
- 20:21Speaker 2: that I miss, the mark that Adam and Eve missed,
- 20:24Speaker 2: was that the enemy could convince them that God really
- 20:27Speaker 2: didn't have their good in mind. Did he really say
- 20:31Speaker 2: you shouldn't do this? He just knows that if you
- 20:33Speaker 2: eat that fruit, you're gonna know everything Like he does.
- 20:36Speaker 2: He's keeping something from you that that will be better.
- 20:39Speaker 2: If you don't go, you can't trust him, you should
- 20:42Speaker 2: go your own way, right.
- 20:43Speaker 1: That's that's the.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Original lie that led to the original sin that I
- 20:47Speaker 2: think stills a lie that leads us to live in
- 20:51Speaker 2: this distance from God today. But if I really believe
- 20:54Speaker 2: what sib says that there's more mercy in Christ than
- 20:57Speaker 2: sin and me, it's a it's a challenging thing because
- 21:00Speaker 2: I don't live naturally. I have to come to the
- 21:04Speaker 2: supernatural place, which is hard to do. I have to reflect,
- 21:07Speaker 2: I have to sit, I have to be in contemplation,
- 21:11Speaker 2: I have to be in confession. I have to be
- 21:14Speaker 2: in silence or solitude or something. You know, if it's
- 21:16Speaker 2: temporarily for five minutes. The thing that brings me back
- 21:20Speaker 2: that's the hardest for my soul to believe is also.
- 21:23Speaker 1: The most important. And that's that.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Like if I really believe the scriptures that before I
- 21:30Speaker 2: ever woke up this morning, he was already singing over
- 21:32Speaker 2: me right.
- 21:34Speaker 1: That he's not like me.
- 21:36Speaker 2: He doesn't get tired, he doesn't have to sleep, he
- 21:38Speaker 2: doesn't run out of patience. He's not like me. But
- 21:42Speaker 2: I'm judging his love for me as if he's like me, Yeah,
- 21:46Speaker 2: then he's not. That's why I need him. I need
- 21:49Speaker 2: to understand him more. And even I don't need to
- 21:52Speaker 2: understand him more, I need to trust him more because
- 21:54Speaker 2: I won't understand. But and always I tell the church
- 21:57Speaker 2: all the time, of all the mysteries we could be
- 21:59Speaker 2: a part of chasing that Christian Christianity chases mysteries now
- 22:05Speaker 2: like it's a like it's a hobby. And I guess
- 22:07Speaker 2: we always have, Well, do we go to church on
- 22:09Speaker 2: this day or this day, we're gonna live in that mystery?
- 22:11Speaker 1: Do we do we?
- 22:13Speaker 2: Is there gonna be a literal rapture or is that figurative?
- 22:16Speaker 2: Is it gonna be a catching away? Is it going
- 22:17Speaker 2: to be in the in the beginning of a seven
- 22:19Speaker 2: year tribulation, in the middle of a seven year tribulation,
- 22:21Speaker 2: or at the end of one. Is there gonna be
- 22:23Speaker 2: a millennium? As a millennium already happened?
- 22:24Speaker 1: Are we in the millennium? Now?
- 22:26Speaker 2: Like we're in all these mysteries That scripture doesn't come
- 22:29Speaker 2: right out and say exactly what they're gonna be, But
- 22:32Speaker 2: there's so much about God's love for us that is
- 22:35Speaker 2: not at all mysterious anymore. That Paul even says that,
- 22:39Speaker 2: like Jesus came to reveal the mystery, and so that
- 22:42Speaker 2: mystery revealed is that if you wanted to know the
- 22:44Speaker 2: nature of God, now that you've met Jesus, that's the
- 22:47Speaker 2: nature of God towards you, and now you don't have
- 22:49Speaker 2: to be mysterious about it. But we still find a
- 22:51Speaker 2: way to make to chase the mysteries and ignore the
- 22:54Speaker 2: stuff that's been answered.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Yeah, what's that great quote by staring Curekery guard about
- 22:58Speaker 1: like big God of Christian scholarship is basically to weasel
- 23:03Speaker 1: your way out of doing what the Bible just says. Yeah,
- 23:06Speaker 1: it's to try to find a way to squeeze it
- 23:08Speaker 1: into your own ideology. Yeah, instead of just because there's
- 23:12Speaker 1: a part of that quote where he says, if you
- 23:13Speaker 1: just take a vow to just do the first five
- 23:18Speaker 1: verses of Corinthians, you'll be like, my God, my life
- 23:21Speaker 1: will be ruined. Yeah, you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 23:24Speaker 1: and so we're desperate not to ruin our lives, so
- 23:26Speaker 1: we try to fit God in this box. But yeah,
- 23:28Speaker 1: I think that there's something to be said for that
- 23:30Speaker 1: of like, yeah, just like what is our goal? What
- 23:33Speaker 1: is our what is our use for the Bible? We
- 23:35Speaker 1: are using it because I feel like it's become a
- 23:37Speaker 1: real cudgel now of like almost like it's worshiped, Oh yeah,
- 23:42Speaker 1: instead of this thing of like like Jesus is the message,
- 23:47Speaker 1: He is the fulfillment of it. And so I just think, yeah,
- 23:51Speaker 1: there's there's a lot there that's good stuff.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Though, Well, Sadie asked me the day like she was
- 23:56Speaker 2: she finally had this understanding. We're like when you know
- 23:59Speaker 2: in fifty eight, twenty years after Jesus's ascension, roughly, they
- 24:03Speaker 2: don't have a Bible. She's like, what you know, they
- 24:06Speaker 2: don't have a Bible, they have letters circulating. Because he's
- 24:10Speaker 2: asking me, she goes, did you know there were there
- 24:12Speaker 2: were books of the Bible that didn't get put into
- 24:14Speaker 2: the Bible.
- 24:15Speaker 1: You know, It's like, I do know that. Yeah, let
- 24:16Speaker 1: me talk to you about them.
- 24:17Speaker 2: You know, like apparently there's one there was there was
- 24:19Speaker 2: a Book of Mary and there was I was like, yeah,
- 24:21Speaker 2: you know, so let me talk about apocryphal books, and
- 24:23Speaker 2: let's talk about spurious you know, authorship, and let's talk
- 24:26Speaker 2: about I mean we you know, but the strongest believers
- 24:30Speaker 2: that ever walked the earth, who were willing to be
- 24:33Speaker 2: thrown to the lions, did not have a bound Bible
- 24:37Speaker 2: of all sixty six books and what we do today.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Yeah, they had the word, right, they had Yeah.
- 24:42Speaker 2: So I'm not anti Bible, Johnny, I'm.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Just saying he had crave. Why would you say that
- 24:47Speaker 1: on record? Sorry, guys. Oh uh, let's close the show
- 24:50Speaker 1: with my segment, Joan. Let's start with old jokes. We
- 24:52Speaker 1: call it joke about that John the Man stood before
- 25:01Speaker 1: the judge accused of killing and eating an endangered whooping crane.
- 25:04Speaker 1: The man argued he thought it was a common sandhill crane,
- 25:07Speaker 1: not endangered, and convinced the judge. The judge dismissed the case.
- 25:10Speaker 1: As the man was leaving the court room, the judge,
- 25:12Speaker 1: being an avid bird hunter himself, asked what the whooping
- 25:15Speaker 1: crane tasted like. He said, it tastes like bald eagle. John. Yesterday,
- 25:24Speaker 1: one of my best friends told me I often violate
- 25:27Speaker 1: his personal space. It was a very hurtful thing to say,
- 25:30Speaker 1: and it completely ruined our bath. That's one of my
- 25:35Speaker 1: favorite kind of jokes. Yeah, it's totally normal until the
- 25:39Speaker 1: very last word, completely absurd at the end. The very
- 25:42Speaker 1: last word makes it a joke. I think that's a
- 25:44Speaker 1: perfect joke. Yeah, it completely ruined our bath. I ha's
- 25:49Speaker 1: so perfect. What a great joke. I never heard that
- 25:51Speaker 1: one before. So good, John, Let's do this week in history.
- 25:54Speaker 1: We call it talk about then this week. John. Nineteen
- 26:02Speaker 1: ninety four, Michael Moore defeated Evander Holyfield for the title,
- 26:07Speaker 1: making him the first left handed heavyweight boxing champ. Really
- 26:11Speaker 1: did not know that. It took until ninety four. I
- 26:13Speaker 1: would think I left, he would have an advantage, and
- 26:15Speaker 1: we came out. We came up in an era where
- 26:19Speaker 1: if you were the heavyweight boxing champion of the world,
- 26:21Speaker 1: it meant you were the baddest man on the planet.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Now it's kind of splintered in its mma and it's
- 26:25Speaker 1: all these other things, and it just doesn't mean what
- 26:27Speaker 1: it meant when Mike Tyson was just roaming in the
- 26:29Speaker 1: countryside knocking out people, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, those guys.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Even Muhammad Ali's era, you were the baddest man on
- 26:36Speaker 1: the planet. Yeah, and this guy was the first left
- 26:39Speaker 1: hander in ninety four in that wild Evidently you are
- 26:41Speaker 1: at a big disadvantage or it's just very rare for
- 26:43Speaker 1: left handers, or they teach you to throw right handed,
- 26:46Speaker 1: maybe and you have a left but you're right is
- 26:47Speaker 1: your strong hand man almost if you throw with both.
- 26:50Speaker 1: But I'm saying like that's your strong Yeah, so where
- 26:52Speaker 1: you throw the hook or whatever.
- 26:53Speaker 2: I mean, I guess that they are they are protecting
- 26:56Speaker 2: themselves with their most dominant hand. Yeah, maybe that's what
- 27:00Speaker 2: it is because they're right hands dominant and you're coming
- 27:03Speaker 2: in left, so they have more protection.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I don't know, but it seems like, like you said
- 27:06Speaker 1: that that would give you an advantage if you're used
- 27:08Speaker 1: to defending a certain kind of boxer that a left
- 27:10Speaker 1: handed would have stuck in there way before ninety four. Anyway,
- 27:13Speaker 1: I thought it was fascinating. Yeah. I think Michael Moore
- 27:15Speaker 1: was defeated later that year by very elderly for boxing
- 27:20Speaker 1: George Foreman, because he became the oldest champion. I think
- 27:23Speaker 1: he defeated Michael Moore in the mid nineties to become
- 27:25Speaker 1: because he was like coming to the press conferences with
- 27:27Speaker 1: big plates full of cheeseburgers and stuff, and he would
- 27:30Speaker 1: say like, I'm winning this, and everybody was rooting for
- 27:32Speaker 1: him that was in their forties and they're like, go
- 27:33Speaker 1: get them big George. Yeah, man, that's right before the
- 27:37Speaker 1: grill apparently, Yeah, well it was it was mid I
- 27:40Speaker 1: was thinking that was mid grill era. That is, he
- 27:42Speaker 1: was probably in the grill era. I we need to
- 27:45Speaker 1: confirm that with our producers that are not here. John.
- 27:49Speaker 1: The Beatles member John Lennon changed his middle name this
- 27:53Speaker 1: week in nineteen sixty nine, from Winston to I don't
- 27:56Speaker 1: know this one. I would never have guessed it if
- 27:59Speaker 1: you give me a million guesses. Oh no, He took
- 28:02Speaker 1: on Yoko's last name as his middle name. Wow, yeah,
- 28:06Speaker 1: would you do that? You could be John Canada Driver. Yeah.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Sure, that'd be like I think of being an upgrade
- 28:13Speaker 2: from my middle name.
- 28:14Speaker 1: What's wrong? What's wrong with Carl? There's nothing wrong. I'm
- 28:17Speaker 1: just saying it's not a common John Canada Driver. Yeah, yeah, honey,
- 28:23Speaker 1: do you just say the word John. This week two
- 28:26Speaker 1: thousand and two, Elmo, the muppet character from television Sesame Street,
- 28:29Speaker 1: testified before the House Appropriation Subcommittee on Labor, Health and
- 28:34Speaker 1: Human Services, and Education to request two million dollars in
- 28:36Speaker 1: federal funding for music education programs. We need more of this, Yeah,
- 28:41Speaker 1: we need more characters.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Last week we had we need the Pooh go on
- 28:44Speaker 2: trial because we know Mo testified.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Listen. Liz Winstead, the great comedy writer who wrote for
- 28:48Speaker 1: The Daily Show back in the day. She said politics
- 28:52Speaker 1: is just Hollywood for the ugly, and she's got a point.
- 28:56Speaker 1: It is Hollywood for ugly people. And I'm sick of
- 28:58Speaker 1: c span. I'm sick of all the games. Let's have
- 29:01Speaker 1: Almo on. Yeah, let's listen. If you're trying to raise
- 29:03Speaker 1: money for education for children. Calv Elmo. Don't see somebody
- 29:06Speaker 1: yell at Elmo. Yeah, you know, Deny tried denying Elmo
- 29:11Speaker 1: funds and see what happens. May make Almo cry. I'm
- 29:18Speaker 1: your the rest of my time to the distinct risk
- 29:22Speaker 1: senator from Loreenciana. Oh, Elmo, you get a little misty
- 29:29Speaker 1: when you think about it, that's okay, John. This week
- 29:32Speaker 1: nineteen eighty five, Coca Cola announced it's changing it's ninety
- 29:37Speaker 1: nine year old formula, introducing what's to become known as
- 29:39Speaker 1: new Coke. Less than three months later, due to public
- 29:42Speaker 1: outcry and poor sales, they brought back the old formula
- 29:45Speaker 1: under the name co Classic Coca Cola Classic. Uh were you?
- 29:49Speaker 1: Did you drink new Coke? What were you have been?
- 29:50Speaker 1: Eighty five? You would have been so do you think
- 29:53Speaker 1: you ever tried a new cocine? We're like, ugh, yeah,
- 29:55Speaker 1: do you remember there being outcry? I remember the outcry?
- 29:58Speaker 1: I don't remember Minnesota family. For first of all, a
- 30:00Speaker 1: lot of families aren't soda families. We would get coked.
- 30:02Speaker 1: We were soda family. Bro I mean my mom, I
- 30:04Speaker 1: mean I drink a lot of soda. Yeah. Well, I
- 30:07Speaker 1: mean I'm working on some kidney stones over here. But
- 30:11Speaker 1: my mom would drink a coke every day and so coke.
- 30:13Speaker 1: That was a big treat in our house too. We
- 30:15Speaker 1: weren't like rich people, but we had soda. We didn't
- 30:17Speaker 1: have soda in the bottles, but I remember going like,
- 30:19Speaker 1: walk down to the gas station, get a soada out
- 30:21Speaker 1: of the out of the soda machine, and it was
- 30:24Speaker 1: a big deal. Like, Mom gave me a dollar, Let's
- 30:26Speaker 1: go get a coke. You know why they did this, right,
- 30:29Speaker 1: You think this is one of the conspiracies you believed
- 30:31Speaker 1: to drum up sales to spike sales.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I've watched the documentary. Oh okay, well I've watched Food
- 30:36Speaker 2: the Belts America, which is a documentary. Okay, So it
- 30:39Speaker 2: was the first time in history that pepsi overtook coke, right,
- 30:42Speaker 2: and so Coke panicked yea and tried to make a sweeter.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Version like pepsi.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Yeah, because in taste tests, that's where they got the
- 30:49Speaker 2: Remember theyre doing blaying on the commercials and.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Some of all I hear, what makes you different? You're
- 30:55Speaker 1: trying to come become like them?
- 30:57Speaker 2: Yeah, just because someone sold moret weight.
- 30:59Speaker 1: That's a work about to about to make yourself a some.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Of y'all been blind in your taste tests, and you
- 31:05Speaker 2: need to take off the blindness. And so anyway, they
- 31:07Speaker 2: would do the blind taste test and they'd pick pepsi
- 31:09Speaker 2: every time. Yeah, and so well where they would every time.
- 31:11Speaker 2: That's what the ad is, the Pepsi Challenge, and it
- 31:13Speaker 2: got people going. They went and bought pepsi more.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Do you know what you probably saw the documentary, but
- 31:18Speaker 1: I've seen like further like articles about the Pepsi Challenge
- 31:21Speaker 1: is that pepsi tastes better by the drink. So if
- 31:25Speaker 1: you sip a pepsi and sip a coke, yes, you're
- 31:27Speaker 1: more likely to choose it.
- 31:28Speaker 2: You won't finish the pepsi.
- 31:29Speaker 1: If you won't finish the pepsi, it's too sweet, guys.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Isn't that If you want somebody to drink the whole can,
- 31:33Speaker 1: it's to be savored. That's a coke. Coke every time?
- 31:36Speaker 1: Coke is the best?
- 31:37Speaker 2: Guys?
- 31:37Speaker 1: Isn't that just I mean some of y'all, some of
- 31:39Speaker 1: y'all out here just trying to be sipped and you
- 31:40Speaker 1: need to be savored. Well, that's not exactly where are
- 31:44Speaker 1: you going? Well, I was thinking like sin tastes good
- 31:46Speaker 1: for one. So I see you know what I'm saying.
- 31:48Speaker 1: But you won't finish.
- 31:49Speaker 2: You don't want to finish the whole can of sin. No,
- 31:52Speaker 2: I mean I used to drink a six pack of
- 31:54Speaker 2: cin every night.
- 31:56Speaker 1: John's testimony is a wild out here, John, it was
- 32:00Speaker 1: sin classic. John born this week nineteen thirty two. Sadly
- 32:05Speaker 1: died in nineteen eighty four, which is why he makes
- 32:07Speaker 1: the list. Jim Fixed James Fuller Fixed. You know who
- 32:10Speaker 1: Jim Fix was. He was an American author. He authored
- 32:14Speaker 1: the book The Complete Book of Running in nineteen seventy seven,
- 32:17Speaker 1: which launched a running craze. He basically engineered the jogging
- 32:21Speaker 1: craze of the seventies, and he died of a heart
- 32:24Speaker 1: attack while jogging. Oh. His book The Complete Book of
- 32:27Speaker 1: Running launched a nationwide running craze, and he started running
- 32:31Speaker 1: and quit smoking at age thirty five, when he weighed
- 32:33Speaker 1: two hundred and fourteen pounds. Now, listen back then, that
- 32:36Speaker 1: was I don't like it when somebody's I gotta get
- 32:39Speaker 1: my life together. Weight is my current weight, and it's
- 32:43Speaker 1: kind of my goal weight. I'm like, I can't believe
- 32:45Speaker 1: I'm not I was over. I was three hundred and
- 32:46Speaker 1: twenty pounds almost, and here I am down to like
- 32:49Speaker 1: two fifteen. I'm like, I'm doing good man, And then
- 32:51Speaker 1: they go, this guy got it. I gotta this guy
- 32:53Speaker 1: got two more. He's like, I gotta stop smoking. I
- 32:55Speaker 1: gotta start running. I gotta do something. Yeah, well, but
- 32:58Speaker 1: you're six foot two. That's true. We don't know this guy.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Who knows what he was. He smoked two packs of cigarettes
- 33:04Speaker 1: a day. Ten years later, when his book, The Complete
- 33:05Speaker 1: Book of Running was published, he was sixty pounds lighter,
- 33:08Speaker 1: and the book sold over a million copies. It is
- 33:11Speaker 1: believed he may have suffered a congenital heart defect, as
- 33:14Speaker 1: his father died of a heart attack at age forty three.
- 33:15Speaker 1: So this is probably not uncompletely. But you know, the
- 33:18Speaker 1: people that wanted you to stay couch potales were like,
- 33:20Speaker 1: this is what happens. I get out there and start running.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I'm better. Often they keep smoking, they're chugging away at whatever.
- 33:25Speaker 1: They're drinking their six pack of sin, Diet Sin by
- 33:30Speaker 1: the seventies, Diet Sin John. Finally, this week in nineteen eighty,
- 33:35Speaker 1: the Pennsylvania lottery scandal happened. It was known as the
- 33:38Speaker 1: triple six fix. Oh, and I've got several little factoid
- 33:42Speaker 1: about it because I looked it up. I looked up
- 33:43Speaker 1: further information about it. It was a rigged drawing on
- 33:46Speaker 1: April twenty fourth, nineteen eighty, where conspirators weighted ping pong
- 33:50Speaker 1: balls to guarantee the number six sixty six. Basically, they
- 33:54Speaker 1: weighed down the sixes and the fours and some of
- 33:57Speaker 1: the zeros, and then they gave tips out to people
- 34:01Speaker 1: that were These were anchors. These were some people who
- 34:02Speaker 1: loked at the new station that ran the lottery, so
- 34:04Speaker 1: they were involved like longtime employees of the station. The
- 34:07Speaker 1: conspiras included WTAE staff host Nick Perry, stage hand Fred Luhman,
- 34:12Speaker 1: and our director Joseph Block. They replaced the officiery lottery
- 34:15Speaker 1: balls with weighted ones, ensuring only six could appear in
- 34:17Speaker 1: each of the three positions. Actually I read that it
- 34:19Speaker 1: was sixes and fours because they, you know, to make
- 34:21Speaker 1: it a little bit more so. The suspicious betting activity
- 34:26Speaker 1: was the reason they got exposed because the sixty sixty
- 34:30Speaker 1: six was what was drawn, which is crazy. Sixty six
- 34:31Speaker 1: to six is what came up, so that I'd have
- 34:33Speaker 1: spooked everybody out should right away.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Somebody won too picked that number.
- 34:38Speaker 1: It resulted in three and a half million, or roughly
- 34:40Speaker 1: thirteen point six eight million in twenty twenty five jackpot.
- 34:44Speaker 1: The suspicious betting activity, specifically massive bets on combinations of four,
- 34:48Speaker 1: six and zero in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, triggered investigations. So
- 34:51Speaker 1: it's probably like mobbed up people, to be honest, I mean, okay,
- 34:54Speaker 1: So then covered that one point one eight million of
- 34:57Speaker 1: the winnings were linked to the plotters. Nick Perry and
- 35:02Speaker 1: other conspiracs were convicted and served jail time for the rigging. Sure, yeah,
- 35:05Speaker 1: that's a major fraud. But uh, there's a movie about it.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Lucky Numbers in two thousand John Travolta and Lisa Kudro
- 35:11Speaker 1: is loosely based on the scandal. I've not seen that movie,
- 35:13Speaker 1: and I want to watch it. Interesting, but do you
- 35:15Speaker 1: know how they rigged the balls syringes full of paint
- 35:21Speaker 1: latex paint, so the balls are white. They put white
- 35:24Speaker 1: latex paint so you couldn't see it see it in
- 35:26Speaker 1: the ball wow, And you couldn't see the pinhole where
- 35:29Speaker 1: the syringe had gone in, and so the balls would
- 35:31Speaker 1: blow around a little bit but they were more, they
- 35:33Speaker 1: would drop quicker into the little slots. Wow, and six
- 35:36Speaker 1: sixty six is what came up, which is exactly that's
- 35:39Speaker 1: ominous in itself that they should have known we're getting
- 35:41Speaker 1: buried to get in a lot of trouble. We should
- 35:43Speaker 1: have made four to four four. Yeah, that would have anyway,
- 35:48Speaker 1: Don't play the lot What I guess I'm saying is
- 35:50Speaker 1: forget what I said earlier about playing the lottery. Now
- 35:52Speaker 1: again you're asking for trouble.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean people are going to rig it.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Don't rig the lottery. Yeah. If there's one.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Takeaway yeah from the last four hundred episodes, Yeah, it's this,
- 36:04Speaker 2: don't try to rig the lottery.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Stop trying to rig the lottery. Yeah.
- 36:07Speaker 2: We've said a lot of things, but this may be
- 36:09Speaker 2: the most important sort of PSA that we can give.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Yeah. So I mean we're all about serving the public. Yeah,
- 36:15Speaker 1: it's fron Jones speaking of serving the public. Where would
- 36:17Speaker 1: you find all of our archived episodes? You got to
