- 0:25Join me, click follow, like and subscribe and let's see where
- 0:29this leads. I've been recording for two
- 0:34years now, so I thought I'd take a minute to look back, but not
- 0:40look back in a way of revisiting my story from an emotional place
- 0:45or look back with nostalgia. I just thought it would be fun
- 0:49and interesting to remember how far I've strayed.
- 0:53Strayed from the life that I thought that I wanted.
- 0:56So many of us think that we want a certain life.
- 0:59We're told that. We're told the life we should
- 1:01have, we should desire. We see other people's lives
- 1:05modeled this way. People date, they fall in love,
- 1:09they get married, have kids, and the end.
- 1:13But after doing all that, I had so much left, so many things I
- 1:18wanted to try and do. So the end wasn't the normal
- 1:22end. It was just the end of a
- 1:25chapter. The I got married chapter, I did
- 1:29this. I never thought I was the type
- 1:31of person that was going to leave.
- 1:34I always prided myself on staying, holding on, trying to
- 1:39make things work. I did it in every relationship I
- 1:42had with my parents, with my friendships at work, but with my
- 1:48marriage, I was the one that let go.
- 1:51And I did it unexpectedly, and I did it simply.
- 1:57At the time, I had no idea why Making that move was effortless.
- 2:01I felt like I should have been crying, I should have been
- 2:04confused, I should have been mad at myself.
- 2:08But I wasn't. I wasn't any of those things,
- 2:12and I didn't feel bad. All of that did not remind me of
- 2:16me at all. But I allowed myself to be
- 2:19whatever I was, and I now know why I was the way I was, why I
- 2:25reacted with little to no reaction.
- 2:29When I got married, I was young. I mentioned that a lot.
- 2:34And like most young people, we don't know what we want.
- 2:37We don't know why we want it, but we just know that we're
- 2:40supposed to have it. We're supposed to desire it.
- 2:44And so I followed in most young people's footsteps.
- 2:48I went with what's expected. I married the perfect guy for me
- 2:52at the time. My parents, my life, New York,
- 2:56where I grew up, it's all pretty dramatic, pretty fast-paced,
- 3:01pretty different than what I would find I actually really
- 3:03like. And my husband at the time, he
- 3:06exhibited what I needed. Then I needed calmness.
- 3:12I needed somebody that was just stable, a safe place to be.
- 3:16I guess there was not highs and lows with him, there was just
- 3:22being. Just being was something that I
- 3:25didn't get to experience growing up.
- 3:28Even my friends wanted drama, they wanted gossip, they wanted
- 3:32all the problems that could happen.
- 3:35Nobody was celebrating silence and calmness and relaxing.
- 3:40So when I found it in that relationship with him, it felt
- 3:44cozy. It felt cozy for a long time.
- 3:48And then one day, every conversation felt the same.
- 3:55Everything just felt the same, and I started to feel invisible.
- 4:03Now, a lot of women say this. A lot of women say I don't think
- 4:08I'm anything more than the furniture.
- 4:10And I get that. In the beginning of a
- 4:13relationship, there's a lot of talking, a lot of connecting, a
- 4:16lot of getting to know one another.
- 4:19And slowly that gets replaced with mundane days.
- 4:24And when you add work and kids into the mix, you get further
- 4:28and further away from what you liked about that person that you
- 4:31married in the 1st place. But now, looking back after
- 4:35three years of being separated, I know exactly what it is that I
- 4:40was looking for, what I needed in a relationship.
- 4:44In any relationship, I need a connection, my form of
- 4:49connection, which is talking and sharing.
- 4:52Which is not surprising considering what I'm doing right
- 4:55here, right now. But I didn't have that.
- 4:58I had calmness and stillness and quiet in my relationship.
- 5:04So maybe the cracks were always there.
- 5:07The signs weren't loud and glaring, but they were there.
- 5:12I just didn't know it until one day I found myself unexpectedly
- 5:18talking to somebody and lighting up.
- 5:21This was a very unfamiliar feeling, but also incredibly
- 5:25refreshing. I felt alive, I felt seen, I
- 5:33felt sparkly, and I wanted to indulge.
- 5:37And I crossed the line, a line that I couldn't come back from.
- 5:42I want to take a minute to talk about this because I'm not going
- 5:45to bring a motion into it. I know I could and I'm not going
- 5:49to bring judgement in. I know a lot of other people
- 5:51will do that, so I don't need to be the one to do it.
- 5:55I never thought of myself as somebody that was going to
- 5:58stray. I was a committed person, the
- 6:02person that signs up and never leaves no matter what.
- 6:06I was going to stay the course, but I didn't.
- 6:11I actively chose not to. I chose to cross a line.
- 6:16I chose to try something different.
- 6:19And I broke my loyalty with my husband.
- 6:22But in doing so, I realized that I kept my loyalty to myself.
- 6:27And that was something that I had never considered me.
- 6:32Because when you consider what do you want, you have to
- 6:35consider what you have. What don't you have?
- 6:40What do you need? And for a lot of people, that's
- 6:44not something easy to do. Because to do that, you have to
- 6:48look at every part of your life. And that's when things get
- 6:52really messy. It's not easy to examine this
- 6:56without examining that everything's connected.
- 7:00So when I strayed off course, I knew I wasn't coming back from
- 7:04it. I knew that something had awoken
- 7:06in me that I never knew I needed, I never knew existed,
- 7:12and I never thought I could have.
- 7:15But for a brief time, I felt it. I saw it, I experienced it, and
- 7:22I wanted more. I wanted more of me.
- 7:26Now that might sound a little random.
- 7:28What does that mean? Wanting more of myself, or
- 7:31anybody wanting more of themself?
- 7:33I wanted to understand why it was that I had spent so long
- 7:38kind of just going along with things, accepting what was given
- 7:42and not asking for more or asking for different.
- 7:46And so started a new journey. A journey to find out not just
- 7:51what makes me tick, but what makes many people tick.
- 7:54Why we choose the things we choose.
- 7:57We stay longer than we should. I can now look back three years
- 8:01later and say I get it. I get why it was that it was so
- 8:06easy for me to walk away from a commitment that I thought I was
- 8:10firmly rooted in. It's because I finally realized
- 8:14that I was committed to myself too.
- 8:17That I needed to choose me. That I needed to ask myself,
- 8:22what do I need? What matters to me now, not what
- 8:26matters to me when I was 24. And in doing so, I was able to
- 8:33let go of a lot of relationships that were not right for me.
- 8:37Maybe I had outgrown them, maybe I never saw them for what they
- 8:41were in the 1st place, or maybe they were just going to take new
- 8:44shape with my marriage. That's what happened.
- 8:48My former husband and I, we came together and we decided that our
- 8:52relationship was just going to be different, that he was going
- 8:56to be my family, but it wasn't going to look the same.
- 9:00I mean, I basically grew up with him and I didn't want to hurt
- 9:04him with the decision I was making, but I didn't want to
- 9:07hurt myself either. And for the first time, I chose
- 9:11differently. I chose to remember myself.
- 9:16I think we have to do that more. I've been talking to a friend
- 9:20recently. She's been telling me all about
- 9:22this new relationship she's in, but when she speaks, I hear it.
- 9:29She's forgotten about herself. She's tabled what she needs,
- 9:32what she wants, what she cares for, what she sees her future to
- 9:36be, and she's more interested in how do I make sure that he likes
- 9:41me? How do I make sure that he's
- 9:44happy? How do I make sure that I get a
- 9:46second date, 1/3 date, 1/4 date, a trip, a long weekend with him?
- 9:51Everything is about making sure that he's fine so that she can
- 9:56be fine. And in that I hear the
- 9:59undercurrent of anxiousness, of people pleasing, of wanting to
- 10:04be good so that she can be chosen, she can fail safe and
- 10:11comfortable in whatever she's doing.
- 10:15But when I hear her speak and I hear that anxiousness, I know
- 10:20it's from the unknowing. And I remember the me that I was
- 10:25not too long ago. I was always somebody that
- 10:28carried anxiousness with me, this perpetual uneasiness.
- 10:34I thought that was just me from the time I was little, these
- 10:38constant inner tremors. And I thought that the way to
- 10:43get over them was to distract myself from them by talking on
- 10:47the phone, watching TV, seeing movies, going out.
- 10:52I even found that calling people out and confronting things would
- 10:57help my anxiousness subside, even if only for a little while.
- 11:03And I hear it when I hear her. She's nervous.
- 11:07She doesn't want to disappoint. She just wants to know where she
- 11:11stands so that she can relax. But in doing so, she puts the
- 11:16control in somebody else's hands.
- 11:19It's not easy to accept what is, but I would come to find that no
- 11:24matter how much suppressing you do, it's much easier to accept.
- 11:29And by accepting that anxiousness leaves you release
- 11:34the hold, the hold that unknowing has on you.
- 11:38It's the act of holding on and trying to figure things out,
- 11:43trying to explain things that you don't understand.
- 11:47That's what keeps you anxious. It keeps you in that loop.
- 11:53And when you finally just release it, let go, you get to
- 11:57observe, see what's really going on.
- 12:01I asked her, how do you know you want to be with this guy?
- 12:04How do you know you want to take trips with him, build a life
- 12:08with him? And she's like, why wouldn't I?
- 12:11I mean, he's nice. And I said, what does he have
- 12:16that works for you? Is he right?
- 12:20Does he have kids? Does he want kids?
- 12:22Do you want kids? Do you not want to take care of
- 12:25somebody else's kids? Where does he live?
- 12:28And when she rattled off the facts, things didn't seem
- 12:32aligned. But for her, her immediate needs
- 12:37were different than her long term goals.
- 12:40I think a lot of people rest their future on what is needed
- 12:44today. It's hard to look down the line
- 12:48because looking down the line means asking yourself what
- 12:52matters. That's not an easy question to
- 12:55ask. And I say that because for the
- 12:57last three years, that's what I've been asking.
- 12:59I spent 40 something years not asking that question.
- 13:03And now that's the only question that I base any of my decisions
- 13:06on. What do I want, even down to
- 13:09trips and the itinerary. I was talking to another friend
- 13:13because I'm going to Japan soon. He's been there several times
- 13:17and he said, what do you want to do?
- 13:19And I said, what do you mean I want to go to Japan?
- 13:22He said, OK, you've booked the ticket, so that's where you're
- 13:25going. But when you get there, what do
- 13:28you want to do? What do you want to see?
- 13:30What do you want to experience? And there it was the question.
- 13:35But here it is in context of a trip.
- 13:37And I thought the obvious answer, I want to hit the sights
- 13:40that everybody tells you you have to see before you leave.
- 13:43And he said, there's so much more to do than that.
- 13:48You can see a temple, and another, and another, and
- 13:50another. But what about the culture?
- 13:53Why don't you think about what it is that you like to do, what
- 13:56you're interested in, and then figure out how you can find that
- 14:00in Japan? What he said applies to
- 14:03everything. Find out what it is that you
- 14:06like, what you're interested in, and then you'll know when you
- 14:10found it in the people that you're around.
- 14:13You'll know when you belong somewhere when something feels
- 14:17right. For me, when I woke into my
- 14:20truth, it was unexpected and it was with somebody that was
- 14:24virtually a stranger and would go back to being a stranger.
- 14:29But what I found was my essence. I found what I was looking for
- 14:35and I found what I never thought I needed, which was care and
- 14:38consideration for somebody that I needed to care and consider.
- 14:42Everybody needs to take a second and care and consider
- 14:46themselves, bring themselves back to the surface.
- 14:52I say this now because after going through assessing what
- 14:55matters to me, that is, I realized that so many people
- 14:59don't give themselves permission to ask these questions.
- 15:03Somehow it's selfish, but I don't think so.
- 15:07I don't think it's selfish to care about what you want, what
- 15:11you see for your future versus what you are living, what you
- 15:15think you could do versus what you're doing.
- 15:18I don't think any of that is selfish.
- 15:21I think it can be scary and I think it can be eye opening when
- 15:26you really sit back and say, where do I fit in into this life
- 15:30that I created? How do I like it?
- 15:33What do I want to hold on to let go of?
- 15:37What do I want to change? So let me take a beat and ask
- 15:42you, what is it that you want? Really, Thanks for listening.
