- 0:00Johan Krish said that these guys may yet become the next journalistic marketplace.
- 0:04So what do you think about that niche?
- 0:06Is that something we should look at?
- 0:08I wouldn't say it's a niche.
- 0:09It's huge.
- 0:10Right.
- 0:14Let's Talk Marketplace.
- 0:16The Marketplace podcast with Ingrid, Lomar and Van.
- 0:22Hello and welcome back to let's Talk Marketplace.
- 0:25Just the two of us today, just Valerie and me, your host as usual.
- 0:29But I thought it would be a good point now, just before summer to maybe look back over the last month and see what has happened in the Marketplace space because there was again a lot of news.
- 0:40So that's what we'd like to do today.
- 0:43But yeah, before that maybe let's look back at last week because that was nice, wasn't it Valerie?
- 0:49Yes, it was really nice actually.
- 0:51We are also pretty much before the summer break.
- 0:53So we had our last webinar in the last weeks and last week, um, we had our Marketplace Universe Connect event in Munich with 25 different brands and a dinner where you change the table with every course.
- 1:08And it was really, really nice.
- 1:11We were outdoors, it was summer.
- 1:14We had very good food and actually very good talks and very good insights.
- 1:19So it was really interesting to hear.
- 1:23And also how the different tables connected with each other.
- 1:26It was really nice.
- 1:27Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:29That different people from different stages in the Marketplace world in a way, and also people from the same industry, but on very different tracks when it came to marketplaces.
- 1:39And then sitting together and just interchanging and looking at how the other was doing stuff and going like, oh, that's interesting.
- 1:46Could try that out.
- 1:47So yeah, I heard people recommending tools, service providers.
- 1:53We also spoke about US expansion because one of the guests came from is originally from the US and now doing European Amazon.
- 2:03And then we also had brands on the table who were European and wanted to go on the US market.
- 2:09So that was quite interesting, really.
- 2:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:12That's always the nicest evenings.
- 2:14So we really doing those very quickly again, aren't we?
- 2:17When is the next one?
- 2:18So I'm planning already so we having our next event on 22nd September in Cologne at the pre evening of the Team Exco.
- 2:32We are also at the Diem Exco, so you can also meet Ingrid and myself at the Diem Exco for a Speed Connect event.
- 2:39And then we are again on the 27th of October in Munich again and in Nuremberg in February.
- 2:46So there's a lot of things to plan.
- 2:49That's actually how my summer looks like.
- 2:51Event planning, I think.
- 2:52So mostly Event planning.
- 2:55Yeah, that.
- 2:56That was nice.
- 2:57Yeah.
- 2:57So, yeah, I guess hope we'll be see you at one of these events as well.
- 3:01Yeah.
- 3:02But for today and to register, you.
- 3:05Get get on our website, marketplace minus universe.com connect event connect.
- 3:10Yeah.
- 3:11And they can register.
- 3:13So yeah, I'll put it in the show notes as well.
- 3:15Yes.
- 3:16And now let's go to the news of the last weeks.
- 3:19Right?
- 3:19Yes, absolutely.
- 3:21Because we have quite a lot of stories that I which I found astonishing because, you know, it's supposed to be summer where things are a bit slower, but actually it's not slowing down yet.
- 3:31So.
- 3:32Yeah, let's see.
- 3:33One of the things that happened was last week MediaMarktorn had their strategy day where they normally give out goals, where they're going for the next few years with their retail business, but also with their marketplace.
- 3:46And there they set a new marketplace target.
- 3:48They want to achieve 1.9 billion euros in GMV by 2029.
- 3:54Up today they're around about ish 800 million.
- 3:59So that would be quite a jump.
- 4:02Interesting though it was that they gave out this marketplace target, but they didn't give out an overall E commerce target.
- 4:12So that makes you wonder in a way, where is this marketplace growth coming from?
- 4:16Is that contributing to the overall growth of the company or is it eating into the retail share?
- 4:24Bit strange in a way, isn't it?
- 4:26Yeah.
- 4:26And to be honest, I think like last year we talked a lot about mediamarktun and this year is a bit like there's really a big pause because of like this economy JD thing, which is like still open.
- 4:39So are they acquiring it or not?
- 4:42Are they allowed to or not?
- 4:44And the German, German ministry has now approved of it.
- 4:46So now it's still.
- 4:48It lies in Brussels now.
- 4:49Okay.
- 4:51And yeah, so the question is really like, what's really happening right now?
- 4:57Because we also met some of the ex Marketplace team of MediaMarktar2 1 at our event, for example.
- 5:04And what we see really is there's also in the background, so many changes and to be honest, like in three years, doubling the marketplace gmv.
- 5:19When you hear, okay, team is changing strategy is not changing.
- 5:23Clear.
- 5:24Yeah, it's quite a big, big black box at the moment with mediamark Station.
- 5:30Yes, I will see where this is going.
- 5:33Okay, let's move on to a very different sort of platform for my second news item.
- 5:40That is something that we normally don't look at, but I think we should because this is about Uber or to be more precise about Uber Eats, which is delivery service by Uber.
- 5:51And they has have launched Uber Eats and now I think five of their seven European markets where Uber is active in as planned.
- 6:01But they are now holding back in pushing out for expansion because they are pursuing a takeover of Delivery Hero, who are doing basically the same thing as Uber Eats, you know, delivering food from local restaurants to the customers.
- 6:17And Uber Eats is just doing the same, so they want to take them over.
- 6:21Delivery Hero is holding out so far and not too interested.
- 6:24We'll see.
- 6:25But the whole thing reminded me a bit of that.
- 6:29We maybe should look a bit closer at these landscape of delivery providers.
- 6:33Not just particularly because of Uber Eats and because of food delivery, but all of them, Uber Eats and Delivery Hero and Walt as well and a few others are also dabbing their toes into local delivery where they're not
- 6:47just delivering food, but, you know, goods from local retail stores.
- 6:51And I remember that at K5 conference, German E commerce expert Johann Krist said that these guys may yet become the next journalistic marketplace.
- 7:01So what do you think about that niche?
- 7:02Is that something you should look at a bit more?
- 7:05Honestly, I wouldn't say it's a niche.
- 7:07I mean, it's huge.
- 7:08Right.
- 7:09So for us, we.
- 7:11Yeah, that's true for maybe the marketplace business.
- 7:14It's a niche, you know, like a marketplace business niche.
- 7:18But overall it's huge.
- 7:22And for several items of our audience, I'm pretty sure that these platforms are also quite interesting.
- 7:32I mean, imagine we had like supplements, also pet food.
- 7:37Right.
- 7:37So everything.
- 7:38Which is also.
- 7:39Which would also make sense on platforms like that.
- 7:44I mean, so everything you need on.
- 7:45A daily basis or not.
- 7:47Not heavy, bulky stuff.
- 7:49Right.
- 7:49But.
- 7:50Or furniture.
- 7:51Yeah.
- 7:51And also maybe things that you don't think about too long when buying it.
- 7:55You know, the customer journey is not long.
- 7:57You just, I need more cat food.
- 7:59So.
- 7:59And some things you.
- 8:00You need often immediately not like, oh, it's okay if I have it like in three weeks or two or whatever.
- 8:10So I need it instant.
- 8:11So, yeah, interesting to look at, I would say.
- 8:19But yeah, we haven't really had a deeper look in it yet, to be very honest.
- 8:23I put that on my list.
- 8:24I think that would be worth a deep dive.
- 8:27Okay.
- 8:28Turning over to a topic that is closer to your fashion heart.
- 8:33Well, actually, my grandmother once told me, like, you don't have a heart for fashion.
- 8:37I was like, I started Fashion Textile Management.
- 8:39She was like, yeah, but I love fashion and you don't.
- 8:42I was like, yeah, okay, that's true.
- 8:44Okay, but different story.
- 8:48Yeah, your.
- 8:50Your grandma is a tough Nail.
- 8:53It's difficult.
- 8:54Please.
- 8:55Anyway, this one is about the ongoing fight between France and Shein because we have been reporting about this on and on again here on the podcast, but also in our newsletter that France is really trying to.
- 9:09Yeah, I don't know, put stones in Shein's way wherever they can.
- 9:14And this is a new one.
- 9:15France's parliament has given final approval to a law banning advertising and that includes influencers for shein, Timo and AliExpress.
- 9:25So only for the Chinese.
- 9:28And.
- 9:29Yeah, so they are not allowed to advertise for their products anymore in France.
- 9:38Yeah, you could imagine that the European Commission has already flagged this one because they said, of course that doesn't really comply with ad ban services rules that are active inside the eu.
- 9:50But we have seen before that France doesn't really care about those.
- 9:54If they want to go after Sheen, then just do it.
- 9:57And what I also read in our notes is that alongside that they also had risen their per item fees to €20 by 2030.
- 10:09What, like €20 fee for a product which costs 3, 5, 10.
- 10:14Yeah, of course, that.
- 10:15That does make sense.
- 10:17Yeah, yeah, if you want to get rid of them.
- 10:20Yeah, that's obviously the.
- 10:23The goal.
- 10:23Yeah, get rid of the.
- 10:24The Chinese players.
- 10:26The Chinese.
- 10:26Cheaper players, let's put.
- 10:29But still, that is.
- 10:30Wow, France again, you know, But I mean, come on, is that just.
- 10:34Is that a France story or could this work in any other European state?
- 10:38Will it make work in France anyway?
- 10:40Well, you know, I think sometimes I like the French approach because, you know, if they don't want something, they really go on the street and say, like, and now everything is burning.
- 10:54Sometimes I would say something like that was also sometimes good for some Germans.
- 11:01A bit more decisiveness, you think?
- 11:03Yeah, more pressure from the.
- 11:05From the, from the people.
- 11:07Right.
- 11:07So, yeah, but different story, different topic,.
- 11:12But a different topic.
- 11:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, but we'll see how this.
- 11:17I mean, if this is going to touch Sheen and Timo and AliExpress at all in France.
- 11:22She in is the France may fight as much as they want, but in is the second biggest fashion store inside France, even if they don't like it.
- 11:30Yeah, that's crazy.
- 11:31So, yeah, we'll see.
- 11:33So let's see.
- 11:34Yeah, let's see how it evolves.
- 11:36And if the French way is a way or not, it's the way forward.
- 11:41Let's see.
- 11:42Okay, what else do we have?
- 11:44Yeah, that is a bit more technical.
- 11:47Amazon has tightened their rules for fbm, so fulfilled by merchant in its five EU markets.
- 11:56So by now FBM sellers need to hit a 90% on time delivery rate, cutting default handling times to one day starting and all of that starting from July 15th.
- 12:11And similar rules are also coming to France, Spain, Italy and it's also already active in the uk I forgot to mention.
- 12:18And Germany.
- 12:19Yeah, and Germany.
- 12:20Yes.
- 12:21And if sellers are missing the mark here, listings can be deactivated from September 1st.
- 12:27So that is actually quite pressing.
- 12:30So help me out here.
- 12:32Is 90% on time delivery a realistic threshold or is that difficult to hit for FBM merchants?
- 12:39Depending where you want to deliver.
- 12:41Right.
- 12:41But I mean I think it's, it makes sense on the one side, but on the other side sometimes like measuring with different rules because I don't know.
- 12:55But if I sometimes order something and I'm living in Munich, right.
- 12:59And if I sometimes order something at Amazon prime and it's fulfillment by Amazon, they don't meet their own guidelines.
- 13:07And then to say like, yeah, okay, but now we tighten the, and straighten the guidelines for, for fbm because we want this.
- 13:15But I mean FBA is like how we want it.
- 13:20Yeah, but sometimes they are also crazy, crazy fast.
- 13:23So yeah, I think it's again another rule you have to commit to if you are doing that in a very, very f.
- 13:33Because I mean it's already there.
- 13:35Right?
- 13:36Almost first of September is like, I mean six weeks now.
- 13:40Yeah, that's I think the usual Amazon way, like oh, we want this now.
- 13:46Let's push it through and let's see what happens.
- 13:50Yeah, yeah.
- 13:51That is just still this Amazon way, you know, put it into effect and say its effect takes part, takes place in 14 days.
- 14:01Go ahead like, okay, okay.
- 14:05Right.
- 14:06What else?
- 14:07That one was interesting.
- 14:09Zalando has industrialized their content production with so called digital product twins.
- 14:15So they are scaling an AI powered 3D scanning pipeline that turns a single 7 minute scan of a product into shop images and videos and AR try ons, you name it.
- 14:27Yeah.
- 14:28And they are planning 45,000 of these digital twins by the end of 2026.
- 14:36So that is, yeah, that is quite the leap in technology.
- 14:40I think I thought that interesting especially with all the AI images, image production that is going on in the industry at the moment.
- 14:48And Zalando is just sitting there and going like, yeah, I do you one over.
- 14:55I just go with the twins and yeah, maximize my output.
- 15:00So what does your fashion heart say to this?
- 15:03Is that the new content production standard?
- 15:06Is that crazy?
- 15:08We talked a lot about that.
- 15:09And content production, especially for fashion is really a thing.
- 15:13And I Think it's necessary because on the one hand it's really difficult to shoot so many images and to get such an awesome videos etc.
- 15:26If you don't use AI, it's.
- 15:29And it's very expensive too.
- 15:31So.
- 15:31Right.
- 15:31If you imagine like you should everything on model, which we did in the past obviously and now you have like seven minutes and then there's everything ready for this product.
- 15:44But also to be honest, sometimes the product materials are not as good scanned as they could be.
- 15:55Also the how the product is falling, I don't know if like it's the right name but if you were a dress for example, you don't know, is it like a bit like flattery or is it like how the
- 16:10fabric is really moving or interacting while moving.
- 16:14Right.
- 16:15So that's actually something which is then not so well done with AI.
- 16:26So sometimes, I mean for the mass it's okay.
- 16:30But if it's really like coming to details to how is really the, the white fabric looking in detail then becomes difficult.
- 16:44So yeah, let's see how good this AI is.
- 16:49Right?
- 16:51Yeah, that's the question in a way.
- 16:52But I always look at reports like this and guess like one part of me is saying yay technology.
- 16:58And that's really, that's really cool and interesting and the new things you can do.
- 17:02And the other part is saying okay, that's another industry that is going out of business I guess because I mean all the models, all the photographers, I.
- 17:12Mean imagine, I don't know, like 5 years ago Zalando had huge photo studios in Berlin like with I don't know how many models, photographers, stylists, etc.
- 17:24And now that's all gone already.
- 17:26I mean it's nothing just because of AI or since yesterday.
- 17:31Oh, they have it now?
- 17:32No, it's already something which came through the past years.
- 17:38But yeah, as you said, that's pretty difficult for one huge industry again.
- 17:45Absolutely.
- 17:46Okay, one last thing that I wanted to look at is Joy Buy.
- 17:50We have been talking about Joy by before and we were let's say skeptical I think because that is JD's European platform.
- 18:02So JD.com is pushing towards the EU as so many Chinese players are doing and, and they are doing it with Joy Buy.
- 18:11And so far JD.com is a full on retailer.
- 18:17So not a marketplace business in Europe, just a retailer.
- 18:21And they have started out like that here as well, going to brands, looking for wholesale partners, all of that.
- 18:29But they are now shifting from an online warehouse model to a marketplace model.
- 18:34And that is not Open just only to Chinese merchants, but also to selected European merchants.
- 18:40And they will be able to sell through the platforms and that is interesting.
- 18:43They can either use their own logistics or joy buys fulfillment.
- 18:48And that is a particular strong fulfillment that they have been also advertising because they are really able to deliver really fast and with good rates.
- 19:00So yeah, that's interesting here and I think.
- 19:04So where are we going here?
- 19:06What does this tell us about what is JD doing inside Europe?
- 19:09Because I mean now they are opening up up their own marketplace, also trying to take over mediamarkt Zetorn, which is also a very strong marketplace in their own specific industry.
- 19:20So JD is quite serious about Europe, I guess.
- 19:23Yeah, looks like.
- 19:24And as well also supporting already Chinese sellers and merchants because that's actually the huge problem they have right now.
- 19:33Right.
- 19:33Transferring their products parcel by parcel to Europe is becoming more difficult.
- 19:40But if you place the products already in Europe then yeah, that's much easier to really be faster at the end consumer.
- 19:50And also don't have this hassle which.
- 19:52Like the new Dim Minimis regulation.
- 19:57Yeah, yep.
- 19:58Yeah.
- 19:58Okay, so another one.
- 20:00Yeah, another one.
- 20:01But also to be very honest, we have the same more similar topics like Temu AliExpress.
- 20:07So yes, interesting for Chinese sellers in Europe, but also for brands because that's also what we discussed last week at the event.
- 20:16It was like, yeah, shall we try Tae Mu or not?
- 20:19But is it really good for my brand and is it really good for my brand recognition but also for my image?
- 20:28And then that was actually a pretty clear outcome.
- 20:32Was like, we are like, that was actually a big kitchenware company.
- 20:38They were like, we won't ever go there because the image.
- 20:43Right, yeah, yeah, that is, that is where JD is going for in a different direction because they are actively trying to set them ourselves up as we are the most, most serious partner.
- 20:57We are the a bit more premium than our other Chinese colleagues which are somewhere down below.
- 21:05You know, we are a bit more of a good environment, more of an Amazon like environment for brands.
- 21:11And this is what they have been pushing and that's the story they're trying to sell.
- 21:16I don't know enough about the platform yet to say if that is true or not, but this is at least the niche they are going for, which I think is smart because the niche of cheap Chinese platforms is
- 21:29definitely taken.
- 21:30We've got three of those already very active in Europe.
- 21:33That, that's quite enough, thanks.
- 21:35So they are now pushing for a different area inside the business on the other hand.
- 21:41And that is what I said when we first talked about jd, if they are going for that niche, what is setting them apart from Amazon?
- 21:49So why would brands go for them if they can go for Amazon as well?
- 21:53Yeah, that's quite true.
- 21:56Yeah, we'll be looking at that space, I guess.
- 21:59Yeah.
- 21:59And I think these were the news for today.
- 22:02We'll see what the next month will bring.
- 22:04I'm sure that July will be a bit slower, so let's see if we're doing a news episode next in August.
- 22:11August as well.
- 22:12But for now, that's our update.
- 22:14So thank you for listening and I hope that was insightful for you.
- 22:19Yeah.

- 22:38Yeah.
- 22:38And you can also tune in next week again, where we will be talking about Marketplace scaling with Daniel Muller, who is a really interesting retailer from Leogra Training.
- 22:49Very concrete and very operational conversation is what awaits you.
- 22:52You don't want to miss that.
- 22:54So see you then, hopefully.
- 22:55Bye.
- 22:55Bye.
- 23:00You listened to let's Talk Marketplace, the.
