- 0:00Yeah, I got a question for you. This is going to be a weird way
- 0:01to start off the podcast, but what do you guys think about
- 0:05people who believe that the Earth is flat?
- 0:08Weird way you're like, I thought we talked about like impulsive
- 0:11behavior or Luke or betrayal. But I got something I want to
- 0:14talk to you about today and see what you think about it.
- 0:17And this is enough necessarily whether the Earth is flat or
- 0:20not, but what do you guys think about people to believe that the
- 0:23Earth is flat? That's what we're going to get
- 0:25into today is something around that.
- 0:31Welcome to Beyond the Facade podcast.
- 0:33I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and I'm thrilled to have you join me
- 0:36in this space today. What we're going to be doing is
- 0:38diving deep into the trials and triumphs and truths of seeking
- 0:42authenticity. Becoming your true self isn't
- 0:44about a single action or a moment.
- 0:47It's a relentless pursuit, a commitment to self that reveals
- 0:50the rich connection and meaning that our life has to offer.
- 0:53So whether this is your first time tuning in or you're a
- 0:55regular listener, know this, what you're building here goes
- 0:59beyond a conversation. You're here to challenge, to
- 1:01change, and to celebrate the incredible journey of becoming
- 1:05your authentic self. Because when you dare to show up
- 1:07fully, the rewards are immeasurable.
- 1:09So welcome to Beyond the Facade. Let's get started.
- 1:14OK, everybody, someday this is going to come back to this
- 1:16analogy is going to come back to bite me, but we'll just play
- 1:18with it for now. The question I ask you is what
- 1:20do you guys think about people that believe the Earth is flat?
- 1:22So the Earth isn't flat, at least I don't think it is.
- 1:26But to people that believe it is, it feels absolutely real.
- 1:31OK, but how can that feel so real?
- 1:35And they recognize there's a I'm just going to say this is an
- 1:37after there's a decent amount of people that actually, or there's
- 1:40a percentage of people that do believe that the Earth is flat.
- 1:45So I'm not trying to get into whether it is or not, but I want
- 1:48to bring something up for you to noodle on and think about.
- 1:52People that do believe it is because they built their whole
- 1:56world around that belief. You can look at YouTube videos
- 2:00on it, you can watch videos, there's communities around this,
- 2:03there's articles, and they have more than believed it because
- 2:09they've reinforced it and they found evidence that works for
- 2:13them and then they're able to form a belief around that.
- 2:17So that's how beliefs work. They don't have to be true to
- 2:21shape your life, right? They just have to be reinforced
- 2:25and we have to find evidence for that, evidence that works for
- 2:27us. And that's what we're going to
- 2:29explore today, how your beliefs have shaped you and how you
- 2:33begin to rewrite them. Because what I noticed in my own
- 2:36journey is, holy crap, the reason why I'm here where I'm at
- 2:41today is because of what I believe.
- 2:43Because I believe I am unworthy, that the people really knew
- 2:47about what I was doing. They wouldn't love me.
- 2:49So that was my belief and I shaped my world around it and I
- 2:52found evidence to back that up. I think particularly what my
- 2:56partner would say, I will listen to the words that she would say
- 3:00that provided evidence of C. She won't accept me if I give
- 3:03her real. There was also a lot of evidence
- 3:05that wasn't true, but that's not what my belief is about.
- 3:09Let me give you some key points here.
- 3:11So a belief system, let's just define it.
- 3:14Belief system is a set of ideas that you accept is true.
- 3:17So it's unconscious, but it's incredibly powerful.
- 3:21And beliefs come from interpretations, not necessarily
- 3:24truth. So their emotional conclusions
- 3:28drawn out of painful experiences, not rational fact.
- 3:32If you had the really unfortunate experience of one of
- 3:35your parents leaving or some separation, so if your dad left,
- 3:39the belief might become if I were lovable, he would have
- 3:43stayed. You didn't choose that belief.
- 3:45It was formed as your brain tried to make sense of the pain
- 3:49that you experience through a parent leaving.
- 3:51So that's heavy, right? The belief system was formed
- 3:54trying to make sense of it as a little person.
- 3:57So we want to just recognize that trauma and the birth of
- 4:02beliefs are tied together. So let's just introduce this
- 4:05sequence, OK? We have an experience, there's
- 4:09an interpretation of that experience.
- 4:11There's emotion and that leads to a belief.
- 4:14OK, experience, interpretation, emotion, belief.
- 4:18My experience was as I was bullied middle school.
- 4:21My interpretation of that is this.
- 4:23I'm weak and I don't belong. The emotion I experience is
- 4:27shame. And now my belief is I'm
- 4:30unworthy and unsafe. So I need to show up ways that
- 4:34are going to make me more worthy and more safe.
- 4:36I got to be worthy to feel safe. So we'll dive into that.
- 4:41But most of your deepest beliefs were born in a moment when you
- 4:45were trying to survive. So you're going through life,
- 4:48especially as a little person growing up, and you were trying
- 4:52to make it through this experience and you believed and
- 4:55you weren't thinking clearly. And if you would step back and
- 4:59examine those experiences, you'll notice that they're
- 5:02running your life today. What was formed earlier through
- 5:05experiences. So what you might have adopted
- 5:08as a little guy really is running your life.
- 5:12No matter how old you are, if you're 3444546474, that belief
- 5:17system is just, it's everything, right?
- 5:21I want to go back to some previous podcast we've had
- 5:24before on what we call the addictive system.
- 5:26We've been going through this a lot in Group lately and some of
- 5:29our groups, which is let's explore what the addictive
- 5:32system is because a lot of us are here because we cheated on
- 5:36our partner or we got caught acting outside of our values.
- 5:39But that's not the problem. The problem wasn't that I was
- 5:42looking at porn. Problem wasn't that I cheated my
- 5:44partner. Yes, that is a problem, but it's
- 5:46not the actual root of what we're experiencing.
- 5:49So here's the addictive system in play.
- 5:51And last do with beliefs is there's a shame based belief
- 5:56system. OK, so I'm not enough, no one
- 5:59will love me. There's a belief about myself.
- 6:02That belief is fueled or followed, I guess I should say,
- 6:07by impaired thinking. OK, so if it's I'm not enough,
- 6:10no one will love me. There has to be some impaired
- 6:13thinking behind it. So I'm going to always be this
- 6:16way. I need this to survive this
- 6:19thing that helps me feel like I'm enough, that belief system.
- 6:24And I feel like I really need to elaborate more on what the
- 6:26impaired thinking is. But again, if the if the belief
- 6:31system is I'm not enough, the impaired thinking is in order
- 6:34for me to feel like I'm enough, I need to go find somebody that
- 6:36tells me I am. I need to show up in a way that
- 6:40helps them see that I'm going to know if I need to get that
- 6:42validation. That's all the impaired thinking
- 6:44that fuels that belief system. OK, that leads into the
- 6:48addiction cycle, which is the preoccupation.
- 6:52That's the like the ruminating thoughts of I'm feeling like the
- 6:56sense of worthlessness. What can I do?
- 6:57The ritualization, which is, which is the process that I fall
- 7:01into to feel validated to the acting out itself, to betraying
- 7:06myself through some type of acting out that's outside of my
- 7:09values to the ultimately is fueled by that belief system,
- 7:13which turns into shame and despair, which leads to
- 7:16unmanageability, which is after I'm in that addictive cycle when
- 7:20it's no longer working, I can't get my needs met, even if it's
- 7:23through acting out. Then I'm like, Oh my gosh, my
- 7:26life is so unmanageable that now reinforces the belief system
- 7:31that I'm not enough. See, after all this stuff just
- 7:35reinforces what I believe. OK, so this system it just like
- 7:39it's self reinforcing. So the core problem isn't the
- 7:43behavior itself we talk about all the time.
- 7:45Horn isn't the problem. To break the cycle, you have to
- 7:48challenge the first layer. You have to challenge your
- 7:50belief system. OK, that's the first part.
- 7:52You can't change anything else until you recognize and start to
- 7:56learn and know what the belief system is.
- 7:58I'm just going to give you some just kind of visually put this
- 8:00on a whiteboard for yourself actually, like I could give you
- 8:03a handout. I'll give you these four pieces,
- 8:06which are typically very, very common parts of sexual
- 8:11compulsive behavior. Sexually acting out when there's
- 8:15hiding in secrecy is first one is, is I am bad at not a worthy.
- 8:20That's a belief system. I'm going to give you 4 things
- 8:23that are they're very common in this world.
- 8:27OK, first one, I am a bad and worthy person.
- 8:29Wrote that up on the white bird. The second one I'd write down is
- 8:32if people really knew me, they wouldn't love me.
- 8:35That's a common belief. The next one is I must meet my
- 8:39own needs. No one else will.
- 8:41I can't rely on other people. Which is kind of like I need to
- 8:44just try harder to figure this out.
- 8:46I've just got to do better. I got to meet those own needs.
- 8:50I'm going to find this inside of me.
- 8:52Remember, these are faulty core beliefs #4 I'm right up on this
- 8:57not real whiteboard, which is sex is my most important need,
- 9:01without it I'll die. That sounds exaggerated, but and
- 9:04replace sex with whatever it is that we were hiding or was
- 9:07compulsive. There was so much risk around.
- 9:10It's my most important need. Without it I'll die.
- 9:12And if you're like, I really don't buy off on that Luke,
- 9:14that's fine, I get it. Just notice the risk associated
- 9:17with it. How much you said I won't do
- 9:19this anymore or hated yourself because you did it and you went
- 9:22back to it anyway? OK, so those are the beliefs,
- 9:25right? Those are some common beliefs,
- 9:26but we can replace them with anything.
- 9:28Any belief that we want to. We're just going to notice what
- 9:30it gives us. So which of these has felt true
- 9:35for you at some point? Which of those really resonated?
- 9:37Grab one of them. So those beliefs, as we go
- 9:41through the rest of this, these beliefs are, they're the engine
- 9:44of this addictive system. So every time you act out, the
- 9:47shame is going to reinforce them.
- 9:49So what we want to do is we want to start to map out our old
- 9:52beliefs. OK, so identify 1 core belief
- 9:57that you hold grab one. Identify what that core beliefs.
- 10:01I'm not enough. And then what we want to do, and
- 10:04we might be able to do this on our own, but most likely we're
- 10:07going to need somebody else, therapist, coach, group, but
- 10:11really somebody that's really can guide us through this.
- 10:15But where did that come from? Where did that belief exist?
- 10:17When did it first grab a hold of me and what was the experience
- 10:21that the planet it, right? If I go back to it, what was it
- 10:26And what has this belief cost you?
- 10:29So let's just map it out. Let me give you those again,
- 10:31like there's this white board you could go through, identify
- 10:34one of those core beliefs. The second thing is, where do
- 10:37you think it came from? The third one is what was the
- 10:41experience that planted it? And the fourth one is, is what
- 10:45has this belief cost you? What we believe is what we
- 10:48reinforce. Your brain is wired to confirm
- 10:51what it already believes. So it's just going to cement
- 10:54that bugger. This is called confirmation
- 10:56bias. You will always find proof for
- 10:59what you already think is true. That's all we need is we just
- 11:03need evidence. Like when I drive down the road,
- 11:05you know, that guy cuts me off and I go, I think something in
- 11:10my head, I believe something about that situation and I find
- 11:13something to reinforce it. And I drive next to him and I
- 11:15look at him and sure enough, guess what I think I can see is
- 11:18he's on his phone. So what I believe is he's I just
- 11:22found something that reinforces like he's a jerk, like he's
- 11:26unsafe person, like he doesn't care about anybody else.
- 11:29I find evidence to back that up. What I believe, is it true?
- 11:32Accurate. Yeah, Probably not.
- 11:35Not the exact way I think it is. Here's another exercise that I'd
- 11:38invite you to do. Choose the one belief you
- 11:42identified earlier. I want you to ask, is this
- 11:44objectively true? Who gave that to me?
- 11:48Do I want to keep it? Then we get a chance to go.
- 11:52Obviously, often no. I should probably say it's a
- 11:56resounding no. What I believe is that I'm a bad
- 11:59guy. Who gave that to me?
- 12:02I recognize that through countless experiences, starting
- 12:05in as a teenager of me being told that my behaviour is bad
- 12:10and going back to it again and again and again, and I started
- 12:13to believe that I'm a bad guy. Then do I want to keep it?
- 12:17Hell no. OK, so if we're not going to
- 12:20keep it, that can sound like a big deal.
- 12:22How do I get rid of that? So it's a vacuum.
- 12:25If you leave that hole, you just leave that hole.
- 12:27Something's going to fall out of the place, right?
- 12:29It's impossible to leave it just empty with nothing to replace it
- 12:32with. There's a new belief there,
- 12:34which is if it's I'm not worthy, maybe the new belief is I'm
- 12:38growing and I'm healing or I am worthy for whatever reason is.
- 12:44So identify ways to reinforce that belief.
- 12:47Write it down, put it in different places.
- 12:50Put it on your mirror in your bathroom, put it on your wall in
- 12:53your closet where you get dressed.
- 12:54Put it next to your bed. Put it in your wallet.
- 12:57Put it work next to the screen on your computer where you can
- 13:00see it because we're going to reinforce it.
- 13:02What am I going to say to myself?
- 13:04Maybe the old belief is I can't depend on anyone.
- 13:07My new belief is I'm learning to let other people support me.
- 13:11I'm learning to let other guys in.
- 13:14And then you reinforce that by going about it and finding new
- 13:18ways by asking group members to check in through the week,
- 13:21journaling how you actually are connecting with other people,
- 13:25saying each morning connection is safe.
- 13:28And that will be the new evidence that oh, there is a new
- 13:30belief in place. It doesn't change without
- 13:33evidence. It doesn't change without things
- 13:35to back it up. Remember, we get to choose what
- 13:37we believe. My invitation to you today is to
- 13:40just reflect on what stood out to you today.
- 13:41When you think about beliefs, how much are you even aware that
- 13:45faulty beliefs are the roots of behavior that is outside my
- 13:52values? So it shapes it leave shape your
- 13:55behavior and it's the most powerful thing you can change.
- 14:00The most powerful thing that you can change is what you believe.
- 14:03Because when you change that, you can change everything
- 14:06downstream of that. You can't change anything
- 14:09upstream. You can't change behavior
- 14:11without changing beliefs. You are handed a belief system,
- 14:15but today you get to choose a new one, all right, and you get
- 14:18to start to implement something new.
- 14:20So anyway, it's good to spend time with you.
