SPEAKER_02: It's your killer host! I'm Parker.
0:33
SPEAKER_02: I'm Caroline.
0:34
SPEAKER_01: And I'm Ian.
0:35
SPEAKER_02: And welcome back to what's your favorite scary movie, The Cozy Horror Podcast.
0:41
SPEAKER_02: So cozy.
0:42
SPEAKER_02: Are you guys ready to gab?
0:44
SPEAKER_02: So ready.
0:45
SPEAKER_02: I am so ready.
0:46
SPEAKER_02: Our first new release review since we were resurrected.
0:55
SPEAKER_02: All right, and I'm feeling like I'm wobbling.
0:59
SPEAKER_02: Wibbling.
0:59
SPEAKER_02: I'm scaling the cliff to get into it.
1:06
SPEAKER_01: Well, at least someone is.
1:08
SPEAKER_02: Today we are doing a sickening little double feature.
1:12
SPEAKER_02: This weekend, or I guess last weekend, we ventured to the theater and we saw both Fall 2, Deadpoint and Very different movies.
1:22
SPEAKER_02: Onslaught.
1:23
SPEAKER_02: If you listened to our last episode, the Halloween hype draft that we did, these were kind of contentious picks between your killer hosts here.
1:34
SPEAKER_02: So we thought we would put them head to head.
1:36
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
1:37
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
1:37
SPEAKER_05: And they went head to head.
1:40
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
1:41
SPEAKER_02: So here's what's gonna happen today.
1:43
SPEAKER_02: We're going to talk first about onslaught.
1:46
SPEAKER_02: We'll give you a little spoiler-free glimmer of what we thought.
1:49
SPEAKER_02: And then we'll get into spoilers.
1:50
SPEAKER_02: We will mark that in our chapter uh chapters so that you can skip.
1:56
SPEAKER_02: And then we will get into fall to deadpoint, same story.
1:59
SPEAKER_02: Second verse, same as the first.
2:01
SPEAKER_02: And then we will bring it home and revisit our Halloween hype draft.
2:06
SPEAKER_02: How's that sound, guys?
2:07
SPEAKER_01: Let's get into it.
2:08
SPEAKER_02: Can't wait to revisit that.
2:09
SPEAKER_02: Also, you may have seen on our socials at Scary Movie Pod the new addition to our set.
2:16
SPEAKER_02: Little ghost face.
2:18
SPEAKER_02: So make sure you're following us there so you don't miss our little fun shenanigans.
2:22
SPEAKER_01: This at this rate, we'll like eventually just be swimming in these little dolls.
2:28
SPEAKER_02: Yes.
2:28
SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
2:29
SPEAKER_02: Love little dolls.
2:30
SPEAKER_02: Can you imagine just so many dolls that just our faces are peeking out from little dolls?
2:36
SPEAKER_02: We'll need a display in the corner of Victorian dolls.
2:39
SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
2:40
SPEAKER_02: All right, you guys.
2:41
SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
2:42
SPEAKER_02: Should we blast into Onslaught?
2:46
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's do it.
2:48
SPEAKER_02: Let's do it.
2:48
SPEAKER_02: So I was, as you might remember, hyped to see Onslaught.
2:54
SPEAKER_05: You were.
2:55
SPEAKER_02: Number one on Parker's hype meter for the holiday season.
3:01
SPEAKER_01: And if you listen to that list episode, not very high, little hard, bottom of the list.
3:08
SPEAKER_05: I feel like Parker had like some sort of like secret insight into like what was gonna crack out.
3:16
SPEAKER_02: What you're identifying there is taste.
3:19
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
3:22
SPEAKER_02: So I was so excited to see this because, like I said in our hype ranking, it just was like the trailer was blood.
3:30
SPEAKER_02: It was splatters, it was spooky men silhouetted in the dark.
3:34
SPEAKER_02: It was get away from my child.
3:36
SPEAKER_02: It was, I'm fighting for my life.
3:39
SPEAKER_02: That's the kind of shit that speaks to me.
3:42
SPEAKER_02: Being a fan of The Guest, being a fan of Your Next, these this is a movie from Adam Wingard.
3:47
SPEAKER_02: I was like, I think this is going to be something I fuck with.
3:52
SPEAKER_02: And uh you ladies didn't feel the same.
3:56
SPEAKER_05: I watched that trailer and all the things that you loved about it, I like read it in a different way.
4:03
SPEAKER_05: Like I just saw kind of like guns, shoot 'em up, like kind of like a corny mom, daughter have to like save, you know, like that's.
4:12
SPEAKER_02: I hate moms and daughters.
4:13
SPEAKER_02: So corny.
4:14
SPEAKER_02: If you're a mom or a daughter, so corny.
4:16
SPEAKER_05: You know, like it's just like, oh, we've we've seen that before.
4:19
SPEAKER_05: And like it looked like just like a war gun movie.
4:23
SPEAKER_05: And I was like, this is not my thing.
4:25
SPEAKER_02: I will say generally, guns and horror movies aren't my thing because like I want to see right.
4:35
SPEAKER_02: You know, that kind of thing.
4:36
SPEAKER_02: Shooting, it's like you could be 10 miles apart.
4:39
SPEAKER_02: I guess not, but I kind of had the same thought.
4:42
SPEAKER_01: I was like, as we were watching the movie, I was thinking, like, sometimes guns, I feel like is just an easy way out.
4:48
SPEAKER_01: Cheap shot.
4:49
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just an easy way out.
4:51
SPEAKER_02: So let's talk a little bit about our first reactions.
4:53
SPEAKER_02: That was our thoughts going in.
4:55
SPEAKER_02: I will say before we saw it, we were all a little confusion.
4:59
SPEAKER_02: I am confusion about what this movie actually was.
5:03
SPEAKER_02: Yes.
5:03
SPEAKER_02: It was pretty straightforward.
5:05
SPEAKER_02: Yes.
5:06
SPEAKER_05: Yes.
5:06
SPEAKER_05: And there was like a historical element that you saw as a teaser in the trailer.
5:11
SPEAKER_05: Like there was some like Nazi background news stuff.
5:16
SPEAKER_05: And I feel like and we'll get into that.
5:18
SPEAKER_02: Ended up being a little more thematic than like literal.
5:21
SPEAKER_02: But basically, it is a government um contractor is building these super soldiers for some sort of corporate government entity, and these super soldiers get out and they go start causing a little ruckus at a New Mexico trailer park.
5:41
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
5:41
SPEAKER_02: Filmed in Albuquerque, a place I have been many a time.
5:45
SPEAKER_02: So, what were y'all first, y'all's first reactions?
5:48
SPEAKER_02: Uh, how did you feel?
5:49
SPEAKER_02: Did you feel entertained?
5:52
SPEAKER_02: Did you feel moved?
5:54
SPEAKER_05: I was locked in the entire movie, and I really didn't think that that would be the case.
6:01
SPEAKER_05: Um I feel like there were enough different storylines that they hopped around to that you were constantly like filling in the gaps in your mind.
6:12
SPEAKER_05: Um I will also say that the creative elements in there were very fun.
6:19
SPEAKER_05: Music.
6:20
SPEAKER_05: The music choices, I don't know if anyone paid attention to that, but I was like, I need the soundtrack visually, a beautiful grain on the movie.
6:29
SPEAKER_01: A lot of like which was interesting because when I was looking it up, I was like, oh, did they shoot this on film?
6:36
SPEAKER_01: They did not.
6:37
SPEAKER_01: So this was not shown.
6:39
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this was post-grained baby.
6:41
unknown: Wow.
6:41
SPEAKER_02: They also the way that like images are shown to us, it's almost like there were things that flashed or morphed, and it was like the kind of like retinal burn on your eyes is making pictures like separately from the movie.
6:57
SPEAKER_02: It was very strange.
6:58
SPEAKER_02: There were like, I don't know, I really enjoyed looking at it.
7:02
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought it was beautiful.
7:03
SPEAKER_01: It I'm trying not to, I'm not gonna do this during this episode.
7:07
SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna compare it because we watched it in the same week as Fall Two.
7:12
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you'll have to stay tuned.
7:13
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we'll get there.
7:15
SPEAKER_01: I I'm trying not to put them, but it it I all I will say is how stark a difference going to watch Fall Two and then going to watch Onslaught was.
7:25
SPEAKER_02: Two sides of a cliff face.
7:27
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
7:28
SPEAKER_01: And one cliff I'd rather be on than the other.
7:30
SPEAKER_01: So let's just say that.
7:32
SPEAKER_02: I thought uh what was really interesting about this movie is that it had a very clear perspective.
7:41
SPEAKER_02: It was telling us some very clear things about America.
7:44
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was very literal in the opening.
7:48
SPEAKER_02: There's like an opening montage of news clips that move from, like Caroline was saying, Nazi Germany to then literally flipping the Nazi crest to the like American eagle crest, not the American Eagle look the American Eagle.
8:07
SPEAKER_02: Not the brand, our like crest, America's olive branch.
8:12
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the like claws out.
8:14
SPEAKER_02: It literally flips it.
8:15
SPEAKER_02: So like the perspective at the beginning, I was like, oh no, I can hear the Twitter, Twitter police coming and being like, oh, whoa, core.
8:23
SPEAKER_02: But it was, I thought, really interestingly woven into the subtext of the rest of the movie rather than it being like white supremacy.
8:35
SPEAKER_05: I gotta get into the spoiler section here because there's some good stuff to talk about.
8:40
SPEAKER_02: All right, before we get to the spoilers, would you give Onslaught a smash or a slash for everybody considering whether or not to go buy their movie tickets?
8:51
SPEAKER_02: Ian?
8:52
SPEAKER_01: I would give it a smash.
8:55
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a proper smash.
8:57
SPEAKER_05: Ooh.
8:58
SPEAKER_05: I am slamming that smash button.
9:02
SPEAKER_05: Wow.
9:03
SPEAKER_05: And me smash.
9:08
SPEAKER_02: All right.
9:08
SPEAKER_02: If you're worried about spoilers, why don't you jump on over to our chapter for us talking about fall two?
9:14
SPEAKER_02: Don't get out of here.
9:16
SPEAKER_02: Oh.
9:16
SPEAKER_02: Let's get to our completion rates up.
9:17
SPEAKER_02: Go.
9:18
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
9:19
SPEAKER_02: Watch the whole thing.
9:20
SPEAKER_02: Just jump.
9:21
SPEAKER_02: Uh, but okay, let's get into the spoilers.
9:22
SPEAKER_02: Caroline, you're itching.
9:24
SPEAKER_05: I'm itching.
9:26
SPEAKER_05: Uh the villain in this movie.
9:30
SPEAKER_02: Played by what do you mean Dan Stevens playing evil scientists guy?
9:35
SPEAKER_05: Yes.
9:35
SPEAKER_05: Cameron or whatever.
9:38
SPEAKER_05: Um incredible villain.
9:41
SPEAKER_05: Um, we're introduced to him in this iconic scene licking a woman's foot in stiletto.
9:50
SPEAKER_02: Hot, her Tootsies.
9:51
SPEAKER_05: Like full tongue.
9:53
SPEAKER_01: You hear the like Was that for him or for her?
9:57
SPEAKER_02: Well for both thoughts about that?
9:58
SPEAKER_05: I I think she's the lady in charge because she comes merching in with like this is how these are.
10:06
SPEAKER_05: Yes.
10:07
SPEAKER_05: Um, but like classic, kind of like, you know, like all white, weird eye kind of thing, like the smoothest bald head I've ever seen in my life.
10:22
SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I just loved that element of this.
10:26
SPEAKER_05: And because of the previews that flash in the beginning of like Nazi experimentation.
10:33
SPEAKER_05: Do you guys remember learning in history class about the like crazy mad doctor that worked with Hitler and like did all ran all the experiments on like twins and like mutations and you know him?
10:46
SPEAKER_02: No, because I went to school in Texas.
10:48
SPEAKER_02: I didn't learn anything there.
10:50
SPEAKER_05: So I I looked him up and um Joseph Mengel, M-E-N-G-E.
10:57
SPEAKER_05: Shout out L-E.
10:59
SPEAKER_05: Quote unquote the angel of death.
11:02
SPEAKER_05: And um, there's a a piece where they discover the villain's body.
11:08
SPEAKER_05: What's his character's name?
11:10
SPEAKER_05: Hans.
11:10
SPEAKER_02: Hans.
11:11
SPEAKER_02: And Herr Kemmler.
11:13
SPEAKER_05: Yes.
11:13
SPEAKER_05: And they're like, oh, I thought he died like 20 years ago.
11:17
SPEAKER_05: This man escaped to South America after World War II and didn't die until like the 70s.
11:24
SPEAKER_01: Whoa.
11:25
SPEAKER_05: So I feel like there's lore and they're like weaving that in.
11:29
SPEAKER_05: Oh, for sure.
11:30
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
11:31
SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
11:31
SPEAKER_01: I really loved oh, what is that movie we watched with the terrible um so aggressive every time?
11:42
SPEAKER_01: With uh more specific.
11:44
SPEAKER_01: Villain with the invisible house.
11:47
SPEAKER_01: Yes.
11:48
SPEAKER_02: That's what you're talking about.
11:50
SPEAKER_02: What?
11:51
SPEAKER_01: I instantly go to thinking of that villain guy, the terrible accent.
11:55
SPEAKER_01: Oh, the British.
11:55
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
11:56
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
11:56
SPEAKER_01: I was like, man, this is a way better villain.
11:59
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
12:00
SPEAKER_02: Well, he's a little more kooky, a little more over the top.
12:03
SPEAKER_02: And uh it what Caroline was saying earlier about it jumping between storylines so rapidly, you kind of need that because we have to be able to like in our brains just like snap, I know who that is.
12:15
SPEAKER_02: Caroline with the historical context.
12:17
SPEAKER_02: Um, and that is what helps us out because I actually found the jumping around like this mom and this daughter, I was like, I don't care.
12:24
SPEAKER_02: That daughter, cute, cute, but I like there was so much other stuff.
12:29
SPEAKER_02: I felt like I cared less about who survived.
12:32
SPEAKER_05: And we have like a swath of characters in the trailer park, and I loved that too.
12:36
SPEAKER_02: And we could have had that as a whole movie, and I still would have been happy, but I'm not mad at the other parts of it either.
12:43
SPEAKER_02: So it's a strange dissonance within myself where I'm like, I wish I could have like really gotten in with a character and felt like I was like, no, please survive.
12:52
SPEAKER_02: But at the same time, I liked everything I saw.
12:54
SPEAKER_02: So uh I loved what you were saying earlier about the feet licking because this movie is all about domination.
13:04
SPEAKER_02: The it's about power.
13:06
SPEAKER_02: First, like they bring it in with Nazi Germany.
13:09
SPEAKER_02: That's about power and domination and killing people who are not like yourself.
13:13
SPEAKER_02: Flips it to America.
13:16
SPEAKER_02: Spoilers, something similar happening in America right now.
13:19
SPEAKER_02: And then it's interesting the layers it finds of all of that, where we have this doctor who is like, you know, Nazi man, you would assume doing the same thing, but then in his personal time, he likes being dominated.
13:34
SPEAKER_02: And then we have this woman at the trailer park who uh they are lower class people.
13:42
SPEAKER_02: They're in this trailer park that most people would think uh I don't, I would not prefer to live there uh in the middle of the desert with no access and these kind of junked-out trailers.
13:53
SPEAKER_02: And she's like the landlord collecting money from all these people.
13:56
SPEAKER_02: And then you've got her husband who is pulling this custody thing over her, and it's all about power dynamics in this movie in an interesting way.
14:04
SPEAKER_02: And I love that it's set where it is with a group of diverse people in this lower class community in the middle of the desert in New Mexico, because it's almost like the forgotten areas of America.
14:17
SPEAKER_02: This movie reminding us who America is.
14:21
SPEAKER_02: Because if you think about where other movies like this are set, it's in middle class suburbia, it's white families.
14:28
SPEAKER_02: And I just like felt honestly like really moved by like this reminder of like, no, these people are America.
14:35
SPEAKER_02: These are actually the soldiers who have gone and fought for America, and now the government is for some of them literally opening up their brains and move using them for some sort of corporate gain.
14:49
SPEAKER_02: They're talking about bottom lines and boards, and I was just like, whoa, this movie's saying a lot, but it's not telling for politics.
14:58
SPEAKER_02: That was beautiful, Parker.
14:59
SPEAKER_01: Is that your like politics?
15:01
SPEAKER_02: Uh Parker for set is.
15:05
SPEAKER_01: This is America.
15:06
SPEAKER_01: This is the people.
15:07
SPEAKER_01: And I'm not sure, yeah.
15:09
SPEAKER_01: Parker for president.
15:10
SPEAKER_02: Well, but listen, you always have this group of people who are like, horror just needs to be.
15:17
SPEAKER_02: Actually, if you go see Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which was a fun time, Gillian Anderson is like saying to this gin Z gal who's telling her like all this stuff that this slasher movie is about, she goes, It's just flesh and fluids.
15:30
SPEAKER_02: And so there are people who want that.
15:34
SPEAKER_02: They can watch this movie and get it.
15:36
SPEAKER_02: There are people who might want to overanalyze, overthink things, they can watch it and get it.
15:41
SPEAKER_02: I thought it was really good.
15:42
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
15:43
SPEAKER_05: I do have to do uh a little shout out to the um the like government guy that swoops in, also talking about dominance, that sex scene.
15:55
SPEAKER_05: We saw lips a thong being gripped by lips in in that film grain high definition, too.
16:06
SPEAKER_05: I was just like, wow, that's something.
16:09
SPEAKER_02: I have to say, I've never seen such a thing on screen.
16:13
SPEAKER_02: Literally close-up of the underside in that way in a theatrical release.
16:19
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
16:19
SPEAKER_02: Things you can watch at home, sure.
16:22
SPEAKER_02: Not I was like, whoa, I'm seeing you can see straight out our mouth all the way through.
16:30
SPEAKER_05: But that that character, too, I feel like he has like such a lovely through line.
16:37
SPEAKER_01: He's I I need to see more stuff he's in.
16:40
SPEAKER_05: He's funny too.
16:41
SPEAKER_05: He's he's like slipping around on the blood and like should we look up who he is?
16:45
SPEAKER_01: He clearly took that role and made it his own.
16:48
SPEAKER_05: For sure.
16:49
SPEAKER_05: Like there was comedic time.
16:52
SPEAKER_05: Also, the comedic timing as a whole, like, there's little nuggets throughout this movie.
16:58
SPEAKER_05: My favorite line.
16:59
SPEAKER_05: Can I can I say my favorite line?
17:01
SPEAKER_02: Real fast, we're shouting out Drew Starkey, who plays the kind of drug addict, uh government operative.
17:07
SPEAKER_01: Snaps for Drew.
17:08
SPEAKER_01: Drew.
17:08
SPEAKER_02: Who I thought would play a bigger role in the end and kind of didn't.
17:11
SPEAKER_05: I kind of love that he did it though, because he is the government.
17:14
SPEAKER_05: And to your point, lazy country.
17:16
SPEAKER_01: He is kind of a useless role in a in a lot of sense.
17:20
SPEAKER_05: But like, that's kind of the whole point is like he's big government.
17:23
SPEAKER_05: He's gonna come clean up and fix the day.
17:25
SPEAKER_05: And he like does absolutely nothing.
17:27
SPEAKER_02: He shows up and it's over.
17:28
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
17:29
SPEAKER_02: And then I was I was expecting she would have to like be done with the the butcher and then like kill that guy.
17:36
SPEAKER_02: No, he just showed up and was like, we'll figure out what to do with you.
17:38
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:40
SPEAKER_02: If I were to have one neg on this movie, everything too fast.
17:45
SPEAKER_02: I didn't really feel like they had to really work.
17:48
SPEAKER_02: Like these are like super soldiers.
17:50
SPEAKER_02: I thought they were going to have to like rip their innards apart.
17:53
SPEAKER_02: I feel like they just kind of killed them.
17:55
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I feel like they made such a big deal about them surviving everything, and then the chainsaw did the trick.
18:03
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they were like, they can tighten their muscles to make a shield from bullets.
18:08
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
18:09
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
18:09
SPEAKER_01: I I was I was really annoyed by how quickly they ran out of ammunition.
18:15
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can't.
18:15
SPEAKER_01: I just thought they would have thought of that.
18:17
SPEAKER_05: Well, and they're wearing like so much garb.
18:19
SPEAKER_05: I'm like, can't you check your pockets?
18:21
SPEAKER_01: Like, you got like so many.
18:24
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like you're so bulked up, like you're full of bullets ready to be loaded.
18:28
SPEAKER_02: I will also say the trailer led me to believe that the butcher, like the the one guy would be the most prominent.
18:36
SPEAKER_02: I could not differentiate between the three.
18:39
SPEAKER_02: And then they were trying to pull us together between her backstory of meeting him in I would assume Iraq.
18:46
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
18:46
SPEAKER_02: And I was like, wait, but I thought that was that guy who would have already died, not the butcher.
18:51
SPEAKER_02: I was like, so I feel like I was having to think too hard because it didn't totally.
18:56
SPEAKER_01: I thought it was the for the longest time, I thought she was fighting her baby daddy.
19:04
SPEAKER_02: That'd be too crazy.
19:05
SPEAKER_01: I thought it was like, hey, let me tell you a story about how I met your dad.
19:10
SPEAKER_01: I kicked him in the balls.
19:12
SPEAKER_02: And it never, I was like, when they were in the final phase of, I was like, oh yeah, she's about to slam that nutsack.
19:18
SPEAKER_05: No.
19:19
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
19:20
SPEAKER_02: Just sawed his leg off.
19:22
SPEAKER_05: The the blood spraying scene though, that was some good blood spray.
19:28
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
19:28
SPEAKER_02: Where she's like, yeah.
19:29
SPEAKER_02: But again, you couldn't really see what she was sawing into.
19:32
SPEAKER_02: Again, like there were a few things where it's like I needed a little bit of orientation into okay, wait, who are each of these?
19:39
SPEAKER_02: If you want me to know who one of the killers are, you have to orient me a little bit in who's who.
19:45
SPEAKER_02: And they didn't know.
19:46
SPEAKER_05: Well, there was one that had like a skeleton mask on, and then that guy had like the nose bandana.
19:55
SPEAKER_02: But I thought trying to connect it to their backstories that the German guy said at the beginning, I would have thought that the guy she fought in war was the cockroach who couldn't who like came alive again after being shot 40-something times.
20:08
SPEAKER_02: But then it was the butcher, but the butcher was some sort of hand-to-hand combat guy because the butcher is the guy that got the knife.
20:16
SPEAKER_02: That's who she fought in the last battle.
20:19
SPEAKER_02: But that doesn't make sense with his backstory.
20:21
SPEAKER_02: So I was very confused, and that was throwing me off the movie a little bit.
20:25
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
20:26
SPEAKER_05: You know, I feel like we're getting really deep.
20:28
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
20:28
SPEAKER_05: Um do you think that there are AI undertones to this like machine killing cannot be stopped and replacement theory gets out of control.
20:39
SPEAKER_02: Not replacement theory.
20:40
SPEAKER_05: But like different no, but like that's a racist.
20:44
SPEAKER_05: They they get released into the wild, and the lady comes back and she's like, we saw it in a community test environment.
20:52
SPEAKER_02: And I but the other thing is, is the main lady is a soldier and she brought heart and mind to her role.
21:01
SPEAKER_05: And that's the the thing.
21:02
SPEAKER_02: And they're saying these soldiers are better because they don't think, they just do what we tell them to.
21:07
SPEAKER_05: And there's a line where the mom says, never go up against someone who has more to lose.
21:13
SPEAKER_05: And she does.
21:14
SPEAKER_01: Which I thought was an I thought about that for a while because I was like, interesting.
21:19
SPEAKER_01: I could see that phrase also being the opposite.
21:22
SPEAKER_01: Like, don't go up against someone who has nothing to lose.
21:26
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
21:27
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
21:27
SPEAKER_01: I was like, hmm.
21:28
SPEAKER_01: I I could see it going both ways.
21:30
SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
21:30
SPEAKER_02: So gosh, you guys, we have juiced this mama.
21:34
SPEAKER_02: Do you hear that?
21:37
SPEAKER_02: We have a visitor.
21:38
SPEAKER_05: A visitor?
21:40
SPEAKER_02: We have a segment from our horror historian who has a little nugget to share with you about onslaught.
21:52
SPEAKER_00: What's up, scary movie fans?
21:54
SPEAKER_00: It's your horror historian Julianne.
21:56
SPEAKER_00: Not my words.
21:57
SPEAKER_00: Those are Parkers.
21:58
SPEAKER_00: So you just watch Africa.
22:00
SPEAKER_00: Adam Wingard's Onslaught, and now it's time for your horror history lesson.
22:04
SPEAKER_00: Get your combat boots on and your AK-47s loaded.
22:08
SPEAKER_00: Just kidding, please don't do that.
22:10
SPEAKER_00: And let's get into it.
22:11
SPEAKER_00: Okay, Onslaught marks Wingard's 30th movie and a return to the socio-political horror action subgenre after a long run of subpar IP franchise films.
22:22
SPEAKER_00: As confirmed by Wingard himself, Onslaught lives in the same cinematic universe as his 2014 cult horror favorite, The Guest, in which Dan Stevens plays an Iraqi war veteran/slash post-George Bush era super soldier that shows up to a grieving family's door, pretending to be their late son and brother's close military friend.
22:42
SPEAKER_00: Naturally, when a man that looks like Dan Stevens shows up at your door and pretends to be a good guy, you're gonna let him write on inside.
22:49
SPEAKER_00: Don't pretend like you wouldn't.
22:50
SPEAKER_00: Of course, Dan Stevens also plays deranged Nazi scientist, Dr.
22:54
SPEAKER_00: Hans Kemmlar, in this new film.
22:56
SPEAKER_00: And not only do they manage to make Dan Stevens look ugly for the first time in probably his entire adult life, if it also remains unclear if Dr.
23:04
SPEAKER_00: Kemlar is another incarnation of his character David from the guest.
23:08
SPEAKER_00: Spoiler for the guest, David is shown to still be alive by the film's end, or if Wingard only brought back Stevens in a completely different context just for shit's giggles and nostalgia.
23:19
SPEAKER_00: I'm assuming it's the latter.
23:21
SPEAKER_00: The Dr.
23:21
SPEAKER_00: Kemlar character is a descent of the Operation Paperclip, which was the secret United States post-World War II program that brought back more than 1,600 Germans to America for their technical expertise.
23:33
SPEAKER_00: He is also named after an actual Nazi engineer of the same name.
23:37
SPEAKER_00: What a dishonor.
23:38
SPEAKER_00: According to the interview with the Hollywood reporter, Dr.
23:41
SPEAKER_00: Hans Kemmlar is the K in the secretive evil military corporation known as the KPG, featured in The Guest, Onslaught, and the 2011 Adam Wingard classic, You're Next.
23:53
SPEAKER_00: According to that same Hollywood reporter article, David is likely an ancestor or clone of Onslaught's Dr.
24:00
SPEAKER_00: Hans Kemlar, which is a cool little full circle moment.
24:03
SPEAKER_00: As Wingard is known to lean to his John Carpenter-inspired action-style thrilling, all while mixing that with his Mumblecore sensibilities that his earlier works were better known for, his hyper-violent latest effort completely abandons the Mumblecore style as Onslaught just feels grittier.
24:20
SPEAKER_00: Its title card and overall aesthetic are more reminiscent of Robert Rodriguez and Tarantino's films, Grindhouse and Planet Terror, as well as a few other early 2000s horror-gore action hybrid movies.
24:32
SPEAKER_00: But Onslaught features a conspiracy theory laden opening credit sequence, featuring everything from mind control to Satanic Panic to QAnon.
24:40
SPEAKER_00: And that is exactly what prevents it from feeling slightly antiquated, as those of us who lived through the long months of the early COVID-19 pandemic remember all too well as the spread of misinformation from the interwebs regarding vaccines, fake news, and election voting, and more recently the Epstein Island running rampant as we sat indoors and infected our groceries.
25:01
SPEAKER_00: P.S.
25:02
SPEAKER_00: If you want an even more insane cinematic depiction of pandemic era losing one's group on reality in 2020, check out Ariaster's 2025 film, Eddie, please.
25:11
SPEAKER_00: According to an interview with Slant, Wingard has had a long fascination with military conspiracies, which has consequently affected a lot of his filmography.
25:19
SPEAKER_00: As an almost 44-year-old, Wingar was primed by the post-9-11 disillusionment slash war on terror as friends of his serve in Iraq.
25:28
SPEAKER_00: In fact, even his said character, Caleb, mentioned in the guests, was named after his friend who did serve in the military as well, who was still alive, don't worry.
25:35
SPEAKER_00: Though Wingar did not serve in the military himself, he recognizes his experiences with living with PTSD, particularly with his lead played by Adrian Arhona in this new film, as well as his fear of mass shootings as massive thematic presences in Onslaught.
25:51
SPEAKER_00: He says, quote, I want people to look back at it 30 years from now and recognize what makes Onslaught feel like right now.
25:58
SPEAKER_00: That's the horror of now, the sort of senselessness, the gun violence, and the randomness.
26:03
SPEAKER_00: End quote.
26:04
SPEAKER_00: Like a lot of other pointed Trump-era horror movies that have been made in the last decade, such as Becky from 2020 or The Forever Purge from 2021, Onslaught feels angrier than its predecessor, the guest, which makes sense.
26:17
SPEAKER_00: We are living in literally angrier times than then.
26:20
SPEAKER_00: And Adam Wingard knows it and he realizes it.
26:23
SPEAKER_00: According to that same interview, Wingard has realized that Onslaught feels uglier and meaner because, quote, 2014, 2013, that feels like such a different time.
26:33
SPEAKER_00: It felt like war and violence were always something that happened overseas, but now it feels like even though it's always been going on along over here, the spotlight is actually on it here now.
26:42
SPEAKER_00: We are in this weird kind of post-apocalypse, end quote.
26:45
SPEAKER_00: So if all goes according to plan, aka the box office, according to both Adam Wingard and Dan Stevens, a possible sequel to Onslaught could be barreling its way to a trailer park community in New Mexico or near you.
26:57
SPEAKER_00: And I'm sure we'll be discussing it.
26:58
SPEAKER_00: However, until then, this has been your lesson in horror, scary movie heads.
27:03
SPEAKER_00: Class is dismissed.
27:04
SPEAKER_02: Wow, Julianne, our horror historian, that was educational.
27:10
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I never knew that.
27:11
SPEAKER_02: Wow.
27:14
SPEAKER_02: All right.
27:14
SPEAKER_02: Why don't we wrap up this conversation on Onslaught?
27:17
SPEAKER_02: Let's do it.
27:18
SPEAKER_02: Guys, from the movie Onslaught, what would you say is the most memorable murder?
27:25
unknown: Oh, oh.
27:26
SPEAKER_02: I see a hand in the class.
27:28
SPEAKER_02: Pick me.
27:28
SPEAKER_02: Pick me.
27:28
SPEAKER_02: Caroline.
27:29
SPEAKER_02: Pick her.
27:31
SPEAKER_05: The man who was slow barbecued.
27:35
SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
27:35
SPEAKER_02: And they showed him about 20 times.
27:38
SPEAKER_05: Incredible.
27:39
SPEAKER_05: And he just slowly, more and more is melting into this grill.
27:43
SPEAKER_01: I think that has to be like an all-time way of showing time pass.
27:49
SPEAKER_03: I yeah.
27:50
SPEAKER_01: Beautiful.
27:50
SPEAKER_01: I think that's why they did it.
27:51
SPEAKER_01: It was like just to show the passing of time through his charcoal body.
27:58
SPEAKER_05: He was a slow roaster.
28:00
SPEAKER_01: Also.
28:01
SPEAKER_01: Sometimes I feel like a barbecued body.
28:03
SPEAKER_02: I think the best jump scare of the whole movie is she's seeing his burning body, and then one of the scary men pops up.
28:12
SPEAKER_05: Oh, that was scary.
28:13
SPEAKER_02: Right behind him.
28:14
SPEAKER_02: And I was so locked in on the burning body that I was like, ah.
28:17
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
28:18
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
28:18
SPEAKER_02: Ian, most memorable murder.
28:21
SPEAKER_01: It's kind of my one of my most memorable moments and murders at the same time, which is when they're first getting tested in the lab, and um they think that they're dead.
28:34
SPEAKER_01: And then they go in there, and then you realize that that was a ploy all along, and that's when the murders happen.
28:40
SPEAKER_01: So I think that's my most memorable moment and murder scene.
28:44
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
28:44
SPEAKER_01: It's just like, oh, I did not see that coming.
28:47
SPEAKER_02: Also, beautiful sequence, kind of myth and the light of the gun flashing, and there's these strange artistic set pieces around them of this like kind of kaleidoscopy, hypnotizy things.
29:02
SPEAKER_05: It was giving Jurassic Park, honestly.
29:05
SPEAKER_05: Like test experiment, lab breaking everything.
29:08
SPEAKER_01: It really was.
29:09
SPEAKER_01: And it has to be my most memorable murder.
29:13
SPEAKER_01: Because who the hell puts live people in to test on?
29:17
SPEAKER_01: Like that is wild.
29:18
SPEAKER_01: They just got to the government.
29:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
29:21
SPEAKER_01: These soldiers that don't give a fuck.
29:22
SPEAKER_01: I really hope that's not actually happening in my life.
29:25
SPEAKER_02: What goes on in New Mexico?
29:27
SPEAKER_02: Area 51?
29:28
SPEAKER_02: Wait, that's Nevada.
29:31
SPEAKER_02: Uh, my most memorable murder.
29:38
SPEAKER_01: I'm actually trying to remember a murder.
29:40
SPEAKER_01: They're all kind of the same.
29:42
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
29:42
SPEAKER_01: Hot take.
29:43
SPEAKER_05: Police officer being stabbed in the car.
29:46
SPEAKER_02: Actually, yes, that was so good because that guy was kind of goofy, goofy kooky.
29:52
SPEAKER_02: And then I feel like I kind of went on a journey with him and I enjoyed it.
29:56
SPEAKER_02: And it's one of those things where it's like, could he have stepped on the gas a little sooner?
30:00
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
30:00
SPEAKER_02: But the way that he was stabbed, slams on the gas, drags that one killer, and then we see like Viscera having blasted through the windshield.
30:14
SPEAKER_02: Pretty good.
30:15
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
30:16
SPEAKER_02: All right.
30:17
SPEAKER_02: On a scary scale of one to five, how would you rank Onslaught?
30:21
SPEAKER_05: I feel like scariness, probably like a three.
30:26
SPEAKER_02: Like the com that seems high to me.
30:28
SPEAKER_05: Really?
30:29
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
30:29
SPEAKER_02: Oh.
30:30
SPEAKER_02: Three I consider scary.
30:31
SPEAKER_02: It's above average scary.
30:33
SPEAKER_05: What's average scary?
30:34
SPEAKER_02: Two and a half.
30:35
SPEAKER_05: Or that's just middle, not average.
30:37
SPEAKER_02: I guess.
30:38
SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
30:38
SPEAKER_02: Oh.
30:39
SPEAKER_02: We'll have to run the data and crunch the numbers.
30:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
30:42
SPEAKER_05: I would say three.
30:43
SPEAKER_05: Like it's not it.
30:45
SPEAKER_05: I feel like conceptually it's more spooky than actual like jump scares.
30:50
SPEAKER_05: And like, I feel like we're pretty conditioned to like gun violence in America.
30:57
SPEAKER_05: And um yeah, so it's not like spooky.
31:00
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
31:00
SPEAKER_02: If this was a spooky scale, very high, because even just like the the men with the glowing eyes, very cool.
31:07
SPEAKER_02: Spooky.
31:08
SPEAKER_02: But yeah, scary scale, I'd probably give it a chew.
31:11
SPEAKER_02: You have to have some uh tolerance for darkness and gore and murder, but only a couple of times really like ah yeah.
31:19
SPEAKER_05: I feel like it was more like like big trucks and like war.
31:27
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
31:28
SPEAKER_01: Ian spooky scale.
31:30
SPEAKER_01: Uh scary scale.
31:32
SPEAKER_01: Oh scary scale.
31:34
SPEAKER_01: I would say, yeah, what would you give it?
31:37
SPEAKER_01: Three.
31:38
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would be two and a half.
31:41
SPEAKER_02: Uh what would you give this movie on letterboxed?
31:44
SPEAKER_02: One to five stars.
31:45
SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna give it a three and a half.
31:47
SPEAKER_05: Ooh.
31:48
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
31:49
SPEAKER_05: Enjoyed it.
31:50
SPEAKER_05: It even though it wasn't like my cup of tea, what I would typically go to.
31:55
SPEAKER_05: So I love that it's on our programming.
32:00
unknown: Okay.
32:02
SPEAKER_05: Experiencing new things, and I enjoyed it.
32:04
SPEAKER_02: Ian.
32:05
SPEAKER_01: Three and a half.
32:06
SPEAKER_01: I I really enjoyed it.
32:07
SPEAKER_01: I actually think I would watch it again.
32:09
SPEAKER_01: Oh.
32:10
SPEAKER_01: And that's saying something for me.
32:12
SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, I really enjoyed it.
32:14
SPEAKER_01: Loved the loved it.
32:17
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
32:18
SPEAKER_02: And I have seen we should marathon the guest and onslaught because similar vibes, connective tissue.
32:24
SPEAKER_02: Uh, I would give it a four.
32:27
SPEAKER_02: I really liked it.
32:28
SPEAKER_02: I thought it was really fun.
32:29
SPEAKER_02: Um, we will revisit our hype meter at the end of the episode.
32:34
SPEAKER_02: So now let's talk about Fall Two Deadpoint, and then we'll bring it all together and determine our first favorite scary movie of season five.
32:44
SPEAKER_02: All right, you guys.
32:46
SPEAKER_02: So, why don't one of you tell me a little bit about Fall Two?
32:50
SPEAKER_02: Because this was, if I recall, number three or so on y'all's hype meter.
32:55
SPEAKER_02: So I'm embarrassed.
32:56
SPEAKER_02: Why don't one of y'all give me the pitch on why we were so excited to see Fall Two?
33:00
SPEAKER_05: I before we do this, I just want to give a shout out to the person who cut the trailer for this movie because I was so hype watching this trailer.
33:14
SPEAKER_05: I was like, this is an adventure, it's outdoorsy, it's scary, it's making my palms sweat.
33:19
SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna love it.
33:22
SPEAKER_05: And that person that cut that trailer deserves every dollar.
33:26
SPEAKER_05: Help us find them.
33:27
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
33:28
SPEAKER_01: And then they were replaced.
33:30
SPEAKER_05: Um, so the premise of Fall Two is Fall Two Deadpoint following the story of uh Fall 2 Deadpool.
33:40
SPEAKER_05: Deadpool might as well have been, honestly.
33:45
SPEAKER_02: That would have helped.
33:46
SPEAKER_05: The sister of Shiloh Hunter.
33:50
SPEAKER_02: Whoa, we've got full names here.
33:52
SPEAKER_05: I thought that was a really interesting name, so I latched onto it.
33:55
SPEAKER_05: The sister is carrying on the legacy of the adventurous spirit doing dangerous things to feel alive.
34:04
SPEAKER_05: And they find her adventure book after she has died, finds the next adventure, which is this crazy hike in Thailand.
34:11
SPEAKER_02: And they do it.
34:12
SPEAKER_05: And they do it.
34:15
SPEAKER_02: Oh, do they do it?
34:17
SPEAKER_02: They do it indeed.
34:19
SPEAKER_02: I will say, I feel like I set you guys up for failure a little bit.
34:23
SPEAKER_02: I did not know this movie was going to be so connected to the first movie.
34:27
SPEAKER_02: These do not seem like movies that like we should be doing homework for.
34:31
SPEAKER_02: Obviously, y'all got the gist.
34:33
SPEAKER_05: Well, but we got the gist.
34:34
SPEAKER_05: They give you the history bright and clear right in the beginning.
34:38
SPEAKER_02: There is a montage.
34:39
SPEAKER_02: I feel like we might have discussed this in one of our upcoming resurrected episodes.
34:43
SPEAKER_02: There's a montage trying to tell us what a big influencer uh Shiloh Hunter was.
34:53
SPEAKER_02: First of all, I do not recall her being that big of a celebrity in the first movie.
34:59
SPEAKER_02: Um, I also feel like it was very cringe.
35:02
SPEAKER_02: Uh there What, the movie?
35:05
SPEAKER_02: Uh specifically this montage.
35:07
SPEAKER_02: There are this bothers the hell out of me.
35:10
SPEAKER_02: There are clips from the first movie that they have reformatted to look like social video that she'd uploaded.
35:16
SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, how would literally her fans on Instagram have an image of her falling off of the tall radio tower they climb in the first one on Instagram?
35:27
SPEAKER_02: It's a whole point of the first movie.
35:29
SPEAKER_02: They don't have cell service, they don't have fall.
35:31
SPEAKER_01: Like I felt like I had whiplash at the beginning.
35:34
SPEAKER_01: Like the tracing.
35:36
SPEAKER_01: Like I was like, what am I what am I watching here?
35:40
SPEAKER_01: Like, I was like, what is going on?
35:41
SPEAKER_01: And then all of a sudden they're at the SUV, and I'm like, how did we get to this SUV going through her stuff?
35:50
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we just time warp through the social media version of the first movie, basically.
35:55
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
35:56
SPEAKER_05: And it's so funny because opening credits produced partially by BuzzFeed.
36:02
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
36:03
SPEAKER_02: I didn't know BuzzFeed made features.
36:05
SPEAKER_05: And then we're seeing Keith from the Try Guys talking about Shiloh Hunter and her tragic death.
36:13
SPEAKER_01: And I was just like, I don't know if we're allowed to get into it or anything, but yeah, give us your opening.
36:18
SPEAKER_01: Did you guys notice that like all the audio was off?
36:22
SPEAKER_01: Or like the lips and like it felt AI'd or something?
36:26
SPEAKER_02: Especially at the beginning, there was like the sound was strange and it would not show people saying things.
36:31
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and when you saw the lips moving, it's either the like the audio was off or they had to AI something, or something went awry, but like all of the dialogue fell off from their actual lips to me.
36:46
SPEAKER_05: That may have been in the movie theater, though.
36:48
SPEAKER_02: And we're not accusing them of using AI, but it did feel strange.
36:53
SPEAKER_02: In general, one of my biggest complaints about this movie is that they similar to this, just don't show us anything.
37:01
SPEAKER_02: There are scenes where something uh trippy or feats of incredible strength are happening, and it will be like they cut the cameras between the initiation of the movement and the completion of the movement so that you don't actually see it happening.
37:21
SPEAKER_02: It was really weird.
37:23
SPEAKER_02: I think it's a budget saver, honestly.
37:26
SPEAKER_02: I read online they shot this in Thailand, so like really I don't, yes, I read that online.
37:31
SPEAKER_02: I mean, prove me wrong.
37:32
SPEAKER_02: Let me know in the comments.
37:34
SPEAKER_02: But like, obviously, I don't think they actually had them like up on a cliff.
37:38
SPEAKER_02: But I would say also they went to Thailand to use the green screen there.
37:43
SPEAKER_02: There were also greener over there.
37:45
SPEAKER_02: There were many drone shots of this gigantic cliff, and I was like literally scanning the edge of the cliff trying to see them or see the planks.
37:55
SPEAKER_02: I couldn't.
37:56
SPEAKER_02: Is this a fake place?
37:58
SPEAKER_02: Did they make this up?
37:59
SPEAKER_02: Because I was trying to feel scared by saying, Oh wow, they're really high up at the top.
38:04
SPEAKER_02: But these drone shots would show the cliff and you cannot see them.
38:08
SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's my eyesight, or maybe it's just uh the movie.
38:14
SPEAKER_02: All right, all right, all right.
38:15
SPEAKER_02: All right, so we're all feeling a little bit negative on it.
38:19
SPEAKER_02: Do we jump into a couple of spoilers?
38:21
SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes, we have a lot to talk about, so skip forward if you don't want spoilers.
38:26
SPEAKER_02: Yes, you can hear the end of our convo where we will decide our favorite scary movie between these two.
38:31
SPEAKER_02: I wonder what's it gonna be?
38:33
SPEAKER_02: All right, spoilers starting now.
38:36
SPEAKER_02: So this movie was crazy, truly insane.
38:41
SPEAKER_02: I feel as if I so the first movie came out, it did not really take off until it hit Netflix.
38:50
SPEAKER_02: Oh, and they announced I did not know that when they announced the sequel, they announced two were being made.
38:59
SPEAKER_05: So there is a third movie, and the end clearly tells you that.
39:03
SPEAKER_02: The end clearly cliffhangs again.
39:06
SPEAKER_02: Oh and I think this the thing is if I watched this movie on Netflix, I would have been like, oh, it was a fun time.
39:20
SPEAKER_02: Having gone to the theater to watch this, I'm like, that was not made to be seen by the masses.
39:26
SPEAKER_05: This movie, we went on like a weekday evening.
39:30
SPEAKER_05: A good amount of people in the movie theater, people were all audibly laughing as the storyline progressed, and we find out all these characters.
39:42
SPEAKER_02: I have cancer.
39:43
SPEAKER_05: Loud laughter.
39:45
SPEAKER_01: I could not contain myself.
39:47
SPEAKER_05: I was like, Ian was not wheezing next to me.
39:51
SPEAKER_05: Like we just we got the giggles.
39:53
SPEAKER_01: I was expecting, like, you know, like kind of with Onslaught is like you those comedic moments, like they're meant in there to laugh.
40:01
SPEAKER_01: Like they're trying to make you laugh.
40:04
SPEAKER_01: These moments were serious moments that were not trying to make us laugh, and everyone was laughing.
40:10
SPEAKER_02: What is so strange is there are ideas in this movie that are scary.
40:14
SPEAKER_02: You're trapped on the ledge of a cliff with a stranger who has lied to you.
40:20
SPEAKER_02: That's scary.
40:22
SPEAKER_02: Does it well scarier?
40:26
SPEAKER_02: She's just like, I forgive you, let me climb these monkey bars.
40:28
SPEAKER_02: Monkey bars monkey bars.
40:30
SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
40:31
SPEAKER_02: Coming back to the monkey bar photo.
40:33
SPEAKER_02: Oh, that was the other laughter moment.
40:35
SPEAKER_02: That was crazy.
40:36
SPEAKER_02: It all comes back to the monkey bars.
40:38
SPEAKER_05: We were everyone was cracking up at the flashback footage, though, like all laughing.
40:45
SPEAKER_05: You know what's scarier than all of that, though?
40:48
SPEAKER_05: Oh, doing this hike with what I can only assume is hiking boots that were purchased at a Kmart.
40:58
SPEAKER_02: They looked cute though.
41:00
SPEAKER_05: I was just like, girl, in your little Lululemon matching set right now on the side of this like really dangerous mountain.
41:08
SPEAKER_02: Like well, at the beginning, she had like a big pawn show, and they were like, Oh, you're so drab, you're nothing like your sister.
41:14
SPEAKER_02: And then she whips out the matching set, and they're like, I see your sister.
41:18
SPEAKER_05: Oh, let me French braid my hair on the mountain side.
41:22
SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's my feed or maybe your feed too, now that we hike, we're into hiking.
41:28
SPEAKER_01: But I just felt like why couldn't it be my feed?
41:33
SPEAKER_01: Well, tell me if you're getting this content.
41:34
SPEAKER_01: Are you getting rage bait hiking content?
41:37
SPEAKER_01: Like where it's like some influencer and they're like hiking, but they're clearly just rage baiting hikers, like with doing all the things wrong.
41:48
SPEAKER_01: That's what I felt like this movie was was like a 90-minute rage bait for hikers.
41:54
SPEAKER_02: I once went on a pretty strenuous hike, and one of my friends wore Chelsea boots.
42:00
SPEAKER_05: That's that's what I felt like.
42:02
SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
42:03
SPEAKER_05: And then she's like slipping and sliding and like can't get her grip.
42:06
SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, girl, like you're wearing not the right stuff.
42:11
SPEAKER_05: So let me tell you something.
42:13
SPEAKER_02: Some feedback.
42:15
SPEAKER_02: If the third film is still being creative.
42:17
SPEAKER_01: How about you feedback sandwich it?
42:21
SPEAKER_01: Give a feedback sandwich.
42:23
SPEAKER_05: A little positive, a little positive.
42:25
SPEAKER_01: A negative positive.
42:26
SPEAKER_01: End it with a positive.
42:28
SPEAKER_02: Um let me dig into the design.
42:32
SPEAKER_01: It was a moment we got to share together.
42:34
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
42:35
SPEAKER_02: We got to share together.
42:36
SPEAKER_02: A positive is by the end, I had submitted so much to disliking the movie that I thought the last part was fun.
42:45
SPEAKER_05: The pool table lady?
42:47
SPEAKER_02: No, well, rewind a little bit.
42:50
SPEAKER_02: When they discovered that they were, in fact, drug mules, and they had a a fist fight on the mountain.
42:58
SPEAKER_05: Oh my gosh.
42:59
SPEAKER_02: I did enjoy that.
43:00
SPEAKER_02: I thought that okay, we're just having fun.
43:02
SPEAKER_05: Clip in, clip out.
43:05
SPEAKER_02: Also, the gasp, you'll notice I have some clips in my hair that are fingers.
43:09
SPEAKER_05: Ooh.
43:10
SPEAKER_02: The reveal after they have climbed with this man for many hours that he just tosses up a hand and is missing three fingers.
43:19
SPEAKER_02: Crazy.
43:20
SPEAKER_05: The drugs.
43:22
SPEAKER_05: I was like, everything.
43:24
SPEAKER_05: There were so many points where I was just thinking, is this needed?
43:28
SPEAKER_05: Is this needed?
43:29
SPEAKER_05: And then they kept going, is that needed?
43:31
SPEAKER_02: What was smart about the drugs, and I'm sorry, spoiler for the first movie, maybe cover your ears.
43:37
SPEAKER_02: There is an element of the first movie where hallucination comes into play.
43:43
SPEAKER_02: Sure.
43:43
SPEAKER_02: And so when they had uh given them the oxygen tanks, I was like, Okay, we're doing it again.
43:50
SPEAKER_02: Like, that's gonna be a fun surprise.
43:52
SPEAKER_02: So it actually tricked me.
43:56
SPEAKER_02: So the drugs actually were kind of smart.
43:58
unknown: Okay.
43:58
SPEAKER_02: So when they were taking I didn't actually get to say my negative thing because of the sandwich.
44:05
SPEAKER_02: Um what is driving me crazy, what makes the first movie good is not that there is better acting, there is not.
44:16
SPEAKER_02: Is not that there is better writing, there is not.
44:20
SPEAKER_02: It is that you actually feel the vertigo effectively from the camera showing the heights that they are at, from the camera showing how they are teetering on a ledge, how they are at the beginning being a little too reckless with how they are doing that, not secured, all of that stuff.
44:43
SPEAKER_02: And that is what the make makes the first movie surprisingly good, is it actually like upset your stomach to watch.
44:49
SPEAKER_02: This movie, I don't know if I mean part of it is that like a radio tower, you might drive past any day and see that it's tall.
44:56
SPEAKER_02: I don't typically drive past large cliff faces like this that looked like not a real cliff.
45:02
SPEAKER_02: Like it looked crazy.
45:04
SPEAKER_02: I'm assuming it's a real cliff, but like I don't have any connection to the activity of climbing a scary cliff and scooching across planks.
45:15
SPEAKER_02: So that already gives you a harder job to make me scared of it.
45:20
SPEAKER_02: On top of that, as I said earlier, you're showing me these establishing shots.
45:24
SPEAKER_02: I can't tell where where they are.
45:27
SPEAKER_02: You're showing me her jumping from bar to bar or something.
45:32
SPEAKER_02: And again, I'm not seeing her hand leave it.
45:35
SPEAKER_02: I'm not, or I'm not seeing like the act of going between them.
45:38
SPEAKER_02: I'm just seeing her line.
45:39
SPEAKER_02: There's one, she jumps onto a bar, the bar falls, and she's suddenly on the next floor.
45:44
SPEAKER_02: Like also, it's not scaring me.
45:47
SPEAKER_02: They're on these skinny planks, and somehow they are doing huge counterbalance things where she's dropping something and falling backwards.
45:55
SPEAKER_02: It's never an issue.
45:56
SPEAKER_05: She just randomly like ties a shirt like this, one knot holds her whole body weight.
46:02
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's sitting on one of those monkey bars, fully just like chilling, doing stuff.
46:07
SPEAKER_02: And then she should be like, Yeah, the push off to her death.
46:15
SPEAKER_05: I I I did, I was like, wow, I didn't see that coming at all.
46:19
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but then she fell and it looked like she was just like, Well, you we need to talk about that end scene where she gets the acknowledgement from the pool lady.
46:28
SPEAKER_01: Like that, like that's growth.
46:30
SPEAKER_01: What an arc of a storyline getting the trust and the approval from a lady playing pool so that she can go to the right of the pool table instead of the left.
46:42
SPEAKER_02: She's earned her dirt.
46:46
SPEAKER_02: She is now so grizzled.
46:48
SPEAKER_02: She's she's when a woman sets up her pull shot, she gets to be rude and say, actually, no, get out of the way.
46:54
SPEAKER_02: I'm walking.
46:55
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
46:55
SPEAKER_05: She's not just another Lululemon girlie anymore.
46:58
SPEAKER_05: She's hiked a mountain.
46:59
SPEAKER_02: This is not just a bar for tourists.
47:01
SPEAKER_02: This is a bar where only the toffin's.
47:04
SPEAKER_05: Where she says a keyword into a back room.
47:09
SPEAKER_02: It's a cool band name.
47:11
SPEAKER_02: All right, you guys, I feel like I don't have much else to say on this one.
47:14
SPEAKER_02: We've we've said enough.
47:15
SPEAKER_02: There's a third movie coming out, and I hope some people are taking notes on this, so maybe we can enjoy that one.
47:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, please.
47:21
SPEAKER_02: We are, I think, going to maybe skip most memorable murder because loose falling seems to be the only option.
47:30
SPEAKER_05: Well, the man dies too.
47:32
SPEAKER_02: And that's about it.
47:33
SPEAKER_05: Clip in, clip out.
47:35
SPEAKER_02: Do we all pick loose?
47:37
SPEAKER_05: I think so.
47:37
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
47:38
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
47:39
SPEAKER_02: On a scary scale of one to five, how would you rate fall to deadpoint?
47:49
SPEAKER_02: Let's just keep it consistent.
47:52
SPEAKER_02: And then what would you give fall to deadpoint on Litterboxed?
47:59
SPEAKER_05: One.
48:01
SPEAKER_01: I am trying to remember what I gave Devil Wears Prada.
48:05
SPEAKER_02: Devil Wears Prada 2.
48:07
SPEAKER_01: Oh, two, sorry, yes.
48:09
SPEAKER_02: Talk about next month.
48:10
SPEAKER_01: Um it's right there, but it is worse than Devil's Devil Wears Prada 2.
48:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
48:16
SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna give it a 0.5.
48:18
SPEAKER_01: It was probably the worst movie I've ever seen.
48:19
SPEAKER_02: Can you do half?
48:20
SPEAKER_02: The worst movie you've ever You need to watch more.
48:23
SPEAKER_02: I've seen worse.
48:24
SPEAKER_01: It's it's right there with a lot of the bad movies.
48:27
SPEAKER_02: I think I forgot to rank rate it on Letterboxd.
48:30
SPEAKER_02: You can follow me at Parker Del Rey if you want a little glimmer of what we're watching.
48:34
SPEAKER_02: Um, probably one star.
48:36
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
48:37
SPEAKER_02: Room for improvement.
48:39
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
48:40
SPEAKER_02: All right, you guys, let's do a little recap on our Halloween horror ranking.
48:46
SPEAKER_02: So Onslaught was my number one pick for all movies coming out in September and October.
48:56
SPEAKER_05: I'm so embarrassed by these rankings.
48:58
SPEAKER_02: I put Fall to Deadpoint at number 13, my second to last.
49:03
SPEAKER_02: Because if you go playback that episode, I actually predicted exactly what I feel now that the trailer did not show me anything to be scared of.
49:14
SPEAKER_02: That it looked like they had kind of shitted the bed on the Vertigo elements.
49:20
SPEAKER_05: I was so hype about that trailer.
49:21
SPEAKER_02: Where did Fall Two fall?
49:23
SPEAKER_05: Fall Two fell in general, but Fall Two fell on my list as number three.
49:30
SPEAKER_02: Ooh, and where was Onslaught?
49:32
SPEAKER_05: 13.
49:35
SPEAKER_05: I'm so embarrassed.
49:37
SPEAKER_01: Fall 2 was at number 3, and then Onslaught was number 12, I believe.
49:43
SPEAKER_02: We have seen hardly a thing on these lists yet at the beginning of September.
49:48
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
49:48
SPEAKER_02: Our spooky season has hardly begun.
49:51
SPEAKER_02: But if I were to revise my list, fall two dead point might fall to last place.
49:56
SPEAKER_02: Right now I have practical magic two at 14.
49:59
SPEAKER_01: There's no way I think I'm gonna swap on that.
50:02
SPEAKER_01: It has to be better than that.
50:04
SPEAKER_02: Onslaught, honestly, is my number one.
50:06
SPEAKER_02: I think I might bump it down a little bit.
50:10
SPEAKER_02: I think it will now be like my number four.
50:13
SPEAKER_02: And I'm anticipating that I will enjoy Other Mommy, Resident Evil, and Victorian Psycho more than I enjoyed Onslaught.
50:21
SPEAKER_01: But if we've learned anything, I would I thought Fall Two was gonna be amazing.
50:25
SPEAKER_01: And here we are.
50:26
SPEAKER_02: So there's also room for these things to go awry.
50:29
SPEAKER_02: I will update a little bit the viewers who enjoyed our hype ranking.
50:34
SPEAKER_02: I have since recording that episode read the book that Other Mommy is based on.
50:39
SPEAKER_05: Wow.
50:40
SPEAKER_02: I did not enjoy the book.
50:42
SPEAKER_02: I will say that what I've seen in the trailer already looks better than what I read on the page, but it does give me pause.
50:50
SPEAKER_02: But it's still in my top three.
50:51
SPEAKER_05: You should read Verity too.
50:53
SPEAKER_02: I'm actually reading Victorian Psycho right now.
50:55
SPEAKER_02: It's really short, less than 200 pages.
50:58
SPEAKER_02: Big margins.
51:00
SPEAKER_02: All right, Caroline, if you were to revise your lit your rankings, where might fall two fall and where might onslaught now be among where you're hyped for the rest.
51:11
SPEAKER_05: I think I'm gonna do a literal swap.
51:13
SPEAKER_05: Because mine onslaught was 13, fall two is three, and I'm gonna flip-flop those.
51:19
SPEAKER_02: So you're going to keep the Hellraiser video game still at number 14?
51:23
SPEAKER_05: As 14.
51:24
SPEAKER_02: We might have to play that game together and make a little Instagram content for you, ladies.
51:30
SPEAKER_02: Um and then Onslaught is now number three, you said?
51:34
SPEAKER_02: Three.
51:34
SPEAKER_02: And what are the two you think will be better?
51:37
SPEAKER_05: Um, so on number two, I have the Carrie series.
51:41
SPEAKER_05: Ooh, I'm so excited.
51:42
SPEAKER_05: So very excited about that.
51:44
SPEAKER_05: And then number one is Victorian Psycho, which every time I watch that trailer, I get so hype.
51:49
SPEAKER_05: So yeah.
51:49
SPEAKER_01: Ian?
51:50
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would put Fall Two down to number 13, right above Hellraiser.
51:57
SPEAKER_01: Bump everything up.
51:58
SPEAKER_01: I'm very excited about the Crystal Lake and the Carrie series.
52:02
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
52:02
SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
52:03
SPEAKER_02: Now, what are your top top three?
52:06
SPEAKER_01: Well, other mommies at the top there, and then Resident Evil.
52:10
SPEAKER_01: Um, and then yeah, probably Onslaught, but it's a close tie with wanting to see those series right below them.
52:17
SPEAKER_02: Nice.
52:18
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
52:19
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
52:20
SPEAKER_02: Well, look forward to watching more of these, and then we will uh, I think in November, circle back on our total re-ranking.
52:28
SPEAKER_02: Ooh, that'll be fun.
52:29
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm excited about that.
52:30
SPEAKER_02: And let us know what you are most hyped for this Halloween season.
52:35
SPEAKER_02: All right, you guys, we have to end out with the question.
52:38
SPEAKER_02: We are starting fresh.
52:41
SPEAKER_02: We have two movies in front of us.
52:44
SPEAKER_02: Head to head.
52:45
SPEAKER_02: Fall two, onslaught.
52:48
SPEAKER_02: Ian, what's your favorite scary movie?
52:53
SPEAKER_02: Um tough choice.
52:57
SPEAKER_01: Onslaught.
52:59
SPEAKER_02: Caroline?
53:00
SPEAKER_02: Onslaught.
53:02
SPEAKER_02: And mine's onslaught.
53:03
SPEAKER_02: What if I just said fall two after all of that?
53:05
SPEAKER_01: You'd get canceled.
53:07
SPEAKER_02: All right, so it's Onslaught across the board, and we will be growing our list, hopefully diverging here and there as we watch more new releases this season.
53:19
SPEAKER_02: So I'm really excited.
53:21
SPEAKER_02: Ah, we will not have a new episode next week.
53:24
SPEAKER_02: We will in two weeks, though.
53:26
SPEAKER_02: We are headed to the Horror Hound Convention um in Cincinnati.
53:32
SPEAKER_01: So excited to travel there.
53:34
SPEAKER_02: If anybody is headed there, let us know.
53:37
SPEAKER_02: Uh, we'd love to say hi.
53:39
SPEAKER_02: Baby's first horror convention.
53:40
SPEAKER_02: I know it's gonna be a big one for all of us.
53:42
SPEAKER_02: We've none of us have been to a convention before.
53:44
SPEAKER_01: We're already talking about what to wear.
53:46
SPEAKER_02: Oh, and then come back in October.
53:48
SPEAKER_02: We will be watching Other Mommy.
53:51
SPEAKER_03: Oh Mummy.
53:53
SPEAKER_02: All right, Mama.
53:55
SPEAKER_02: You guys, it was a joy and a pleasure podcasting together today.
53:59
SPEAKER_02: I hope you enjoyed it too.
54:00
SPEAKER_02: We're we're fresh back, so I'm feeling like ah, make sure that you're following us on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc.
54:12
SPEAKER_02: at scary moviepods so you never miss a drop.
54:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
54:17
SPEAKER_05: If you leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, we will scream your name on the podcast.
54:24
SPEAKER_05: And we have one to do right now.
54:26
SPEAKER_01: And if you like Fall 2, try to convince us.
54:31
SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's a fun prompt.
54:33
SPEAKER_02: Best of luck.
54:34
SPEAKER_02: Why don't you scream this name?
54:37
SPEAKER_05: Oh, yes.
54:38
SPEAKER_05: All right, we have a review to scream the name of, and this one is from Plumens with an exclamation point.
54:49
SPEAKER_02: Or maybe P Lemons.
54:52
SPEAKER_05: P lemons.
54:55
SPEAKER_02: What do they say?
54:56
SPEAKER_02: First of all, what did they give us?
54:57
SPEAKER_05: They gave us a five-star review.
55:00
SPEAKER_05: Thank you so much.
55:02
SPEAKER_01: P lemons.
55:04
SPEAKER_05: P Lemons said a spooky good time.
55:07
SPEAKER_01: I agree.
55:08
SPEAKER_05: This is such a fun podcast.
55:10
SPEAKER_05: I'm not even a huge scary movie girl, but they cover such a broad range of scary that I still get to feel like part of the crew.
55:17
SPEAKER_05: You are part of the crew.
55:19
SPEAKER_02: Hell yeah.
