- 0:00Hello, everyone. This is producer Peter. We've
- 0:03got a really nice episode today. We have repeating
- 0:05guest Tank back to talk about Francis Ford Coppola's
- 0:09Rumblefish, which is a really interesting movie
- 0:11that we have. a fair amount of stuff to say about
- 0:15um but the bummer is that after doing the recording
- 0:19i found that the audio file for nick myself and
- 0:23tank corrupted and we lost that so we're using
- 0:27our backup scratch track which doesn't sound
- 0:29as good and you know has some issues but i tried
- 0:31to clean it up as much as possible to make it
- 0:33decent and i hope you still enjoy listening um
- 0:36and sean's audio is great so uh there's that
- 0:39anyway enjoy There's a guy who dresses like Batman
- 1:06and then just jet skis around Lake Washington
- 1:09Or Lake Union. I have not seen it. It's fucking
- 1:12sick. I don't know if it was, like, Washington.
- 1:14I think it is Washington. There's a guy with
- 1:15a hot dog motorboat. Oh, I saw a video of a hot
- 1:20dog boat. I didn't know that was in Washington.
- 1:23I was talking about that earlier today. I was
- 1:24like, if that ever happens, somebody should wake
- 1:26me up. He was rolling around, just blasting ACDC's
- 1:31Thunders. Of course. I was babbling nonstop.
- 1:36just like look i'm just really over the top wait
- 1:40did you guys move to portland or did i because
- 1:44this this is weird i think uh it was funny i
- 1:47was like every time there is a uh slightly horny
- 1:51slightly violent surreal dreamscape movie you're
- 1:54like yeah we should get we should probably yeah
- 1:56everybody like it's like a It's like a French
- 1:59gangster who took some Ambien and woke up with
- 2:01a moderate hard -on. Yeah. Like, let's make a
- 2:04movie about that and bring in Tank and have him
- 2:05talk about it. So let's do it. Perfect. I already
- 2:08have the French gangster. Motorcycle, by the
- 2:10way. We were talking about it today. I was hoping
- 2:13that every time we talk to each other, we'd just
- 2:15start with Rusty James. Rusty James. Rusty James.
- 2:19Rusty James. Every sentence starts and ends with
- 2:21Rusty James. Oh, my God. I love that his name
- 2:24is just Russell James, and then they're like,
- 2:26nope, Rusty James. What a cool gang name. Yeah,
- 2:29for real. Yeah, what would be your gang name?
- 2:32Fang. Fang. Dang, I was thinking Fang, too. Yeah.
- 2:36See, I think it makes more sense for me to be
- 2:39Fang, seeing as everything I wear is from Wild
- 2:40Fang. Mine actually makes sense. Why is everybody
- 2:43going Fang? It's just a bit tight -ass. It's
- 2:45just capitalism. Fuck you, you corporate shill.
- 2:50I'm going to be Scratchers. Tank is my business.
- 3:01That's what I take into the straight world. Scratchers
- 3:05is where I go at night. So this is Cage Match,
- 3:11apparently, calling around about meeting Nicolas
- 3:13Cage. I'm your host, Sean, here with my co -host.
- 3:16And I'm Nick. And our producer. Peter, hello.
- 3:20Hey, you kind of did it better this time. Yeah,
- 3:23I've been... Well, no, I haven't been practicing.
- 3:24You've been practicing bullshit. I forgot we
- 3:28were even doing a podcast anymore until you texted
- 3:30me the other day. Yeah, we're going to do all
- 3:33the back catalog. We're getting all the bangers.
- 3:35The movies that don't actually feature Nick Cage.
- 3:38Somewhat feature Nick Cage. Well, yeah, when
- 3:41you're like, what, uncle or second cousin makes
- 3:43the movie and you have to show up because your
- 3:44name is... Because you're a Coppola. We're in
- 3:48the and also Nick Cage genre. era now. The what?
- 3:54And also Nick Cage. Oh, yeah. It's also the Nepo
- 3:57version for these first couple movies. Sophia
- 4:00Coppola, I gotta just say, sucks so fucking bad.
- 4:04Oh, Sophia Coppola is still terrible. I cannot
- 4:07stand her at all. Her directing work is fine.
- 4:12As an actor, and I know she's a kid in this,
- 4:14she sucks. She's so bad. I fully expected her
- 4:18to get retroactively better. and then just suck
- 4:22later in her career? No, not true. Started bad,
- 4:25ended bad. Also returning this week, our friend
- 4:28Tank. Hi, Tank. Hey, everybody. I'm here not
- 4:31to besmirch the career of Sofia Coppola. Only
- 4:33the acting career. Oh, I don't care at all. I
- 4:35really just don't care. Like, there's not a movie
- 4:37that she's in. I'm like, oh, that's the one I
- 4:38want. By the way, this is a great movie. We'll
- 4:41talk about that later. But, like, you can put
- 4:43any kid in there. Kids are terrible. Kids are
- 4:45terrible actors. Nine times out of ten. How do
- 4:47you feel if... Finn Wolfhard was the sister.
- 4:53At any age. At any age, yeah, sure, I would love
- 4:56that, but that's a really bold thing. It's a
- 4:58pretty expressionistic movie anyway. 27 -year
- 5:00-old Finn Wolfhard. Really, like, gender flip
- 5:02a daughter character and, like, not acknowledge
- 5:04it would have been outstanding. That silly, shaggy,
- 5:07like, fucking Joey Ramone hair he's got. So this
- 5:12week we are discussing the 1983 film Rumblefish,
- 5:18which I'd never heard of before. And now I have
- 5:23seen and enjoyed. Okay, good. There we go. We
- 5:27got to the end of it. I'm going to speak like
- 5:32this. So you never know when my sentence ends.
- 5:37So you will never understand if I actually watched
- 5:39the movie or did research. We will know when
- 5:42you're done because you will end it with Rusty
- 5:44James. Rusty James. Beautifully, though, you're
- 5:48on a separate audio track, so Peter can speed
- 5:50you up 75 % and you'll just sound like, I guess,
- 5:55I guess like me. just fast and annoying welcome
- 5:58to cage match later episodes where we exclusively
- 6:01discuss the mechanics of podcasting yeah yeah
- 6:04that's what the people are so so um are there
- 6:08people left is it is anybody yes is anybody familiar
- 6:11with se hidden uh no is that is that an author
- 6:14that rings no I'm going to... I'll give a...
- 6:21It's a she. S .E. Hinton is an Oklahoma author,
- 6:26born probably in the 1940s. Began writing really
- 6:30young, like in her teenage years. Wrote The Outsiders,
- 6:33Rumblefish, a handful of other books. So what's
- 6:37interesting is Coppola did this in Outsiders
- 6:41and released them in the same year, six months
- 6:43apart. Outsiders is a very straightforward story.
- 6:46This one is, I think, much crazier. I think we'll
- 6:48get into it. So S .E. Hinton was like, I don't
- 6:51know, the James Patterson of Oklahoma? Actually,
- 6:55let me back up. It's more of like the Stephen
- 6:57King. She didn't do horror, but she was heavily
- 7:00identified with the region and wrote stories
- 7:02about what it was like to be in Tulsa, Oklahoma
- 7:04in the 50s. So while I think this probably takes
- 7:07place in Missouri or whatever, I don't really
- 7:08know. It's ultimately like she was an Oklahoma
- 7:10author. The fun thing about The Outsiders...
- 7:14was you could read that book in the seventh grade
- 7:16and you could write a book report on it every
- 7:18single year until your senior year of high school
- 7:21and still get like an A in like basic English.
- 7:25So she was sort of an outsized character growing
- 7:28up because she wrote like about what it was like
- 7:31to be in that world. And so I grew up in Oklahoma
- 7:33and that's what it was. But I will tell you,
- 7:36the movie we saw today looked nothing like any
- 7:39version of Oklahoma I'd ever seen in my entire
- 7:42life. Because it's in black and white. It's exactly
- 7:45true. And they have a color there now. Everything
- 7:47in Oklahoma was mostly like a sepia, yellowish
- 7:51tone until about 1985, and then we started Ed
- 7:53Reds and stuff like that. Bold shift. But yeah.
- 7:56But like Outsiders, if you watch that one, and
- 7:58like Outsiders just won a bunch of Tonys like
- 8:01a year or so ago as an opera. Not opera, sorry,
- 8:03as a musical. It's super straightforward. bunch
- 8:06of handsome men and handsome situations yeah
- 8:08and it's like it's like all of the most handsome
- 8:13dudes from the 1980s oh absolutely yeah it was
- 8:14like this was lazy and and like who else yeah
- 8:18i'm like uh yeah it's like it's it's just everybody
- 8:21it's like rob lowe it's milio estevez It's just
- 8:26everybody. Everybody who was remotely like, this
- 8:29is a potentially fuckable human being in the
- 8:32future got in that movie. And this one, they
- 8:34toned it back a little bit, but you still have
- 8:36these really great people pop in. They had a
- 8:40terrific cast. Yeah. A real banger of a Hidden
- 8:43Gems cast. My favorite was Tom Waits, for sure.
- 8:46Oh, yeah. Benny. Absolutely. What a great character.
- 8:49Although, I will say, I... the designer in me
- 8:53hates the, the B being used for Benny's billiards.
- 8:56Cause the first time I read that, I'm like Benny's
- 8:58Iliards. What's that? Even when they showed it
- 9:01again later, that's how my mind read it. It's
- 9:03actually Benny's billiards. Benny's billiards.
- 9:06No. Cause the B and the, the B, the Benny is
- 9:09like one font. Eh, whatever. The Benny is hanging
- 9:12out with Tom Waits. That's why you're a good
- 9:14movie king. Tank, do you want to take a quick
- 9:20synopsis of the film? What's it about for our
- 9:22listeners? Alright, so you have Rusty James,
- 9:26who is the younger brother of what was the lead
- 9:30gang member of a pretty prominent group of young
- 9:34men who just fought nonstop in whatever city
- 9:37they're in. Rusty is like the heir apparent,
- 9:41but is a little dumber. A little less charismatic.
- 9:44A lot dumber. A lot dumber. And just does not
- 9:47have what it takes to carry on. But at the exact
- 9:49same time, his older brother, whose name I never
- 9:51really caught, to be honest with you. A really
- 9:54good Mickey Rourke. A really good motorcycle
- 9:56boy. A really good Mickey Rourke. Fantastic.
- 9:59You forget what a wonderful actor. What a presence
- 10:02that guy has on stage. He disappeared into that
- 10:04one. It's so weird to see Mickey Rourke before
- 10:07he became a mannequin that came alive in a trash
- 10:10compactor. yes right right right like we were
- 10:14talking about this on text like he just i think
- 10:16he got he went to bare knuckle boxing or boxing
- 10:18just got the crap kicked out and did a whole
- 10:20bunch of plastic surgery and just like i don't
- 10:22know i think his body there's like a body dysmorphia
- 10:24thing i'm not i'm no clinician yeah but i'll
- 10:27diagnose people on podcasts all day long uh but
- 10:30anyway so so motorcycle boy is basically the
- 10:33king and he has come back after a period of time
- 10:37in california when she basically has a religious
- 10:38experience where he realizes that the lives of
- 10:41the kind of rumble like culture that they had
- 10:45been a part of was basically hollow and he was
- 10:48going in a dead end direction and ultimately
- 10:50he was going to wind up in a dead end direction
- 10:51and at the end essentially sacrifices himself
- 10:55in some way in order to either evolve Rusty James
- 11:00or to end the culture or whatever but it's just
- 11:03a very nihilistic movie I think in its heart
- 11:06like there's not a lot of like hope at the end
- 11:09of it no it tries to get there and never really
- 11:11reaches it it's also like visually just very
- 11:14expressionistic like nothing about it like so
- 11:18i was watching it at the very beginning i was
- 11:20thinking like this is like a musical with no
- 11:22actual like musical sequences in it like every
- 11:26scene looks like it's gonna lead up to like the
- 11:29jets or whatever they're gonna start snapping
- 11:30and like dance fighting but they just like fight
- 11:32fight or they just do a thing and like i don't
- 11:34know it i i hated it for the first 20 minutes
- 11:37but by the end i was like this is killer every
- 11:39it took me like it took me about 20 minutes to
- 11:41really kind of get into the groove of it but
- 11:42once i realized this is just a stage play like
- 11:45this is if i saw this on stage if i saw like
- 11:48if you i had a character named rusty james who
- 11:49was only referred to as rusty james constantly
- 11:52on stage perfectly fine with it in a movie i'm
- 11:55like this is weird and uncomfortable well even
- 11:58there's a there's like a fight scene where one
- 11:59of the guys gets knocked down um in an alley
- 12:02and like his leg does this huge like melodramatic
- 12:05kind of flop and it's like oh yeah that would
- 12:08work on a stage definitely more than whatever
- 12:10the fuck that was also how would you do the motorcycle
- 12:13hitting that fucking guy put that on stage that
- 12:18felt like something out of a 1980s video game
- 12:20like a double dragon game where yeah shoot yeah
- 12:22yeah yeah the bicycle motorcycle he's the motorcycle
- 12:27boy he shows up on his motorcycle wrecks it to
- 12:31like kill a guy and then like loses his whole
- 12:35like namesake then he's just boy and that's why
- 12:38he's kind of drifting to the rest of the movie
- 12:40they steal another they steal that yamaha or
- 12:42whatever yeah yeah he has one more motorcycle
- 12:44yeah but i just i loved this the framing of everything
- 12:49i loved like the the abundance of fog machines
- 12:53even the final shot of rusty james at uh on the
- 12:58california coast where it's clearly just him
- 13:01on a soundstage with like a screen that is being
- 13:03back projected on but it's just it's so it's
- 13:06the atmosphere of this whole film is just great
- 13:09and like the weird angles i visually just loved
- 13:14this film i think it's essentially an independent
- 13:18movie made by the person who made the godfather
- 13:22yeah you know what i mean it just feels because
- 13:25like again he did outsiders right before and
- 13:27outsider is like a very straightforward like
- 13:29we're making a movie this felt like so at the
- 13:31same time you're getting like jim jarmusch is
- 13:32coming in there's a lot of down by law kind of
- 13:34qualities there there's a lot of this kind of
- 13:36like ultra indie black and white you know motivated
- 13:39camera like we're gonna go really big and expressionistic
- 13:42with the way things are weird angles the fish
- 13:45thing yeah in color there's that scene that's
- 13:48so good near the end where they're walking through
- 13:50the kind of i don't know if it's like a fair
- 13:52or maybe just downtown at night and they're talking
- 13:55about how motorcycle boy is colorblind and also
- 13:58kind of deaf and the sound drowns out and comes
- 14:01back in and drowns out and comes back in he's
- 14:03talking about like why he can't see stuff and
- 14:06like i don't know that's a that's a artsy ass
- 14:09move and it's like 10 minutes long it's like
- 14:12not a short sequence right that whole sequence
- 14:14i it took me a minute to catch on to it but there's
- 14:16like whenever the focus is on motorcycle boy
- 14:19talking it like deadens the sound and whenever
- 14:22we get back to rusty james it's much louder and
- 14:24you hear a lot more ambient sound i thought that
- 14:26was a really nice touch yeah it's really carefully
- 14:30designed like it's again it's an art house movie
- 14:32made by a person who made godfather 1 2 and apocalypse
- 14:35now yeah Who went on to have a very weird career
- 14:38right after that. He has had a very weird career.
- 14:40A very weird career. I thoroughly respect that.
- 14:42Let's not ignore the Megalopolis of it all. Or
- 14:45the Jack of it all. He made Jack. I was forgetting
- 14:48about that. Yeah, he made Jack. He made The Rainmaker.
- 14:51Yeah, yeah. He made some choices. He said Jack,
- 14:54and my brain immediately said, oh, Simple Jack.
- 14:57Oh, yeah. What a terrific film. No, that's a
- 14:59film within a film. Jack is the one, the Robin
- 15:01Williams, who has that disease where he's a boy
- 15:05who... ages too fast and by the way i'd be like
- 15:08reverse benjamin buttons or something but i knew
- 15:10a guy who actually had the disease and it's so
- 15:11much more tragic it's not like i'm 12 and i look
- 15:15at robin williams like i'm i'm 19 and like i
- 15:18have osteoporosis oh that's not like he wasn't
- 15:22able to buy you yeah my little friend can go
- 15:27get his beer it's like no my 19 year old friend
- 15:29needs a walker so um there's a story i want to
- 15:35tell here um but we don't do that here so no
- 15:40no it's about it's about the it's about the movie
- 15:42so they're at the end and they're like looking
- 15:43at the fish right it was like beta fish rebel
- 15:45fish we want to call like your own call a lot
- 15:48of different things so um when i was 22 ish um
- 15:52i was i bought i got a house a rental house with
- 15:54two other guys we were in college there was three
- 15:57bedrooms so Killer rental house. But one bedroom
- 16:00had an en suite bathroom. And so that was like
- 16:03the desired bathroom. We're like, well, how are
- 16:05we going to decide who gets the bathroom? And
- 16:08so coin toss, drinking contest, whatever. We
- 16:13were like, what if we went to Walmart and we
- 16:15all got three betta fish and we put them in one
- 16:17container, one aquarium, and we let them fight
- 16:22to the death and the last one alive got the room.
- 16:27so we did that this is animal abuse this is terrible
- 16:31right again i was the older man i didn't you
- 16:33know whatever um so we did that and we put them
- 16:36all in one fish bowl and over the course of the
- 16:39next 70 hours they fought now they don't fight
- 16:43like they go and they fight each other and then
- 16:44one dies they slowly eat the fins of each other
- 16:48until they can't swim anymore and then go upside
- 16:50down and they float to the top and they die and
- 16:52it was the saddest way i've ever won a bedroom
- 16:56in my entire life and like at the end we were
- 16:59just like can we just stop yeah we just stopped
- 17:01was it your responsibility to flush them down
- 17:06your unsweet absolutely yes actually i did take
- 17:09care of all of it and i feel terrible about this
- 17:11is i'm atoning out loud on this podcast when
- 17:13i watched that scene i was like okay i could
- 17:15finally clean my conscience so good it's a chance
- 17:17for you to heal yeah thanks for coming on cage
- 17:19match a chance for you to heal about uh animal
- 17:22abuse that you inflicted That's the therapeutic
- 17:25podcast about Nicolas Cage. Yeah, it's not fun.
- 17:2870 hours, yeah. It was like 20 minutes. We would
- 17:32go to work, because we all worked night shifts
- 17:34and stuff, we'd go to work and come back and
- 17:36they'd still be alive. Horrible. Yeah, that's
- 17:41rough. Anyway, not as romantic as a piece of
- 17:43that movie. But those fish at the end get set
- 17:46free and they all swim their own way. Sure, they
- 17:49seem happy. Everything in the aquarium should
- 17:51go in a river. Absolutely. Check it all in a
- 17:54river. All goes in a river. That's fresh water.
- 17:57I'm assuming that's the Missouri River. I'm sure
- 18:00that thing is perfectly great for it. Definitely
- 18:03primed for it. It's got the right pH balance.
- 18:06They're going to do great. So other cast of characters,
- 18:10Diane Lane plays his girlfriend. Nicholas Cage
- 18:14plays Smokey. Can we address the Nicholas Cage
- 18:18of it all? Yeah. I liked his jacket. Deuce's
- 18:21wild jacket. That was actually August Coppola's
- 18:25jacket from when they were kids. Interesting.
- 18:29And Francis, because Francis was really big into
- 18:33the brother story of this all, and it really
- 18:37connected. I went back and re -read the Age of
- 18:40Cage portion of this. Yeah, so he was like, oh,
- 18:43you know, we'll get him to wear his dad's old,
- 18:46like, I don't know, gang jacket. Gang. Gang.
- 18:50I guess Cage was not famous enough for the rusty
- 18:55part at this point. Which, it's kind of too bad
- 18:58looking at it, because I feel like he would have
- 19:00done a good job. I mean, it's early in his career,
- 19:03so it would have been a stretch. But, like, Matt
- 19:07Dillon did fine. but he's fine he was fine he's
- 19:11rusty james we got it i think a lot of the like
- 19:14acting performances could be just qualified as
- 19:17fine yeah nobody was exemplary i think uh um
- 19:23that's hopper hopper hopper was great hopper
- 19:26was good but like the movie is like oh their
- 19:28contentious relationship with their father and
- 19:30it's like no he seems like just a drinking buddy
- 19:32to them yeah like there seems to be no struggle
- 19:35between the father's drinking except for you
- 19:38know obviously like motorcycle boy comes in and
- 19:40he's like playfully getting rid of the alcohol
- 19:43in the house sort of thing i mean i think the
- 19:45contention is their dad's just an absentee absentee
- 19:47drunk for sure yeah yeah but it never feels contentious
- 19:53Nobody seems to have a real problem, a developmental
- 19:57problem. The problem is they're all trapped.
- 20:02That's the thing. It's not that he's mean or
- 20:04cruel or violent. He's just a trap. He's a person
- 20:07who has to be taken care of. They have to be
- 20:10there for him. He's just an ever -present chaotic
- 20:13part of their life. He's not terrible, but...
- 20:16I don't know. I don't think any movie's ever
- 20:18made worse for Dennis Hopper. I think he's one
- 20:20of the few actors like, oh, you made that a little
- 20:22better every single time. Well, I'm not upset
- 20:24about him being in there. I enjoyed his performance.
- 20:27It just never felt like... You wanted a little
- 20:29more antagonism between the family. Well, everybody
- 20:33seems so resigned to their place in life except
- 20:36for Motorcycle Boy. It's like, oh, yeah, I am
- 20:39the dumb gang leader. Well, Smokey outsmarts
- 20:44Rusty James. and takes the gang but he seems
- 20:50to be the only one with any kind of ambition
- 20:53like that was kind of the thing at the end though
- 20:56there really was no gang like at the beginning
- 20:58Rusty James is trying to make this whole big
- 21:00stink about like rumbling and shit and we're
- 21:04led to believe that Smokey's kind of a coward
- 21:06and he's just apathetic because he's like you're
- 21:10dumb the gang was dork and beef boy and lawrence
- 21:18fishburne larry larry fishburne but like they're
- 21:23ultimately just plain at being gangsters and
- 21:25smoky's really the only one who sees that yeah
- 21:28i know for real but i do think a lot of it is
- 21:30about that like it's not it's not that it's like
- 21:32this really violent terrible place it's not great
- 21:36but it's just like there's nowhere to go it's
- 21:38like a dead end you know what i mean like hopper
- 21:40was a dead end and that's what they wrote so
- 21:42when they were talking about the mom the mom
- 21:43got out right that was the whole thing she was
- 21:46not a dead end everybody's like oh she was crazy
- 21:48she left she's like no she was probably the sanest
- 21:50person in the entire group but like everybody
- 21:51there was just like resigned to the space they
- 21:54were in it's getting a little heavy uh i'll check
- 21:56it back i'll back out real fast in praise of
- 21:58diane uh wow i just this is one of the we every
- 22:04time again you bring me in for the horn stuff
- 22:06so i'm going to put my horns on for a second
- 22:07so it was laura dern in wild at heart just was
- 22:12smoking and diane lane comes in hot this whole
- 22:15fucking oh yeah that's so good i like the fantasy
- 22:18sequence where she's like up on oh yeah the thing
- 22:21and she's taking her clothes off and like he's
- 22:23like in the wood shop or whatever like or like
- 22:25the machine shop like whatever what a great move
- 22:30just just a plus it's so hard thinking about
- 22:36just high school back then were like here's just
- 22:39a big old machine shop where when i went to high
- 22:42school it was like we can afford a book for five
- 22:46lucky this movie there were two parts that gave
- 22:51me like a little crisis there was one line where
- 22:54someone's like god he's so old he looks like
- 22:5725 oh yeah and i was like yeah okay that's kids
- 23:00talking whatever and then hopper is like i'm
- 23:0240 i've only got 35 summers left in me and i
- 23:06was like jesus fuck is that all i have left yeah
- 23:10oh yeah no i that that hit too i'm like 35 summers
- 23:14doesn't sound like that many summers oh it's
- 23:17always fun you never know when like the midlife
- 23:19crisis is gonna smash into you it's now what
- 23:21is happening well so i was talking about somebody
- 23:23the other day we're like uh talking about cheers
- 23:26and like how george went was 34 when i started
- 23:29i was like i feel a lot but i look in the mirror
- 23:31and he's like i'm 43 i'm like all right I look
- 23:34significantly better than Dennis Hopper did at
- 23:3640. A different life. We're on different timelines.
- 23:40Well, it's like Nick has pointed this out a few
- 23:42times. You used to be able to smoke inside everywhere.
- 23:46And it was cool. It was cool. Super tight. Motorcycle
- 23:50Boy and Rusty James smoked quite a bit. Nick
- 23:54Cage, like, when they came out of the bar, Motorcycle
- 23:57Boy lights up a cigarette, then immediately throws
- 23:59it away. yeah that's classic and then motorcycle
- 24:02boy had that like fucked up busted cigarette
- 24:05somehow miraculously able to smoke even though
- 24:08it was cracked which doesn't work think about
- 24:10though was just how cheap were cigarettes back
- 24:12then they were probably a buck it'd have to be
- 24:15a buck i think a buck a pack 18 bucks a pack
- 24:17like last time i checked but when i quit smoking
- 24:21in 2007 They were $3 a pack in Oklahoma. I think
- 24:27there were probably like six out here at that
- 24:28time. Yeah, that was like, that was the end of
- 24:30it. But probably a buck. I remember my grandfather
- 24:32quit smoking when they got to 75 cents a pack
- 24:34and that was like 1980 something. Yeah. It was
- 24:37like eight bucks a pack up here when I quit.
- 24:39Yeah. And there was like quite a bit of smoking
- 24:41in the, in Benny's billiards where people were
- 24:45having milkshakes and Cokes and just smoking
- 24:47away. Yeah. Chocolate milk. Yeah, it's like,
- 24:50I'm gonna crush a beer, but then give me a glass
- 24:52of chocolate milk, Benny. Oh, man, can you imagine
- 24:55the phlegm if you had, like, two to three cigarettes
- 24:58and then a glass of chocolate milk? That is coating
- 25:01the throat. Repulsive. I will say, and I think
- 25:05a bunch of us have talked about this for a while,
- 25:07if I could have any wish from a really wiener
- 25:10-ass genie or something like that, it could make
- 25:12me ultimately powerful, it would just be like,
- 25:14I would love to smoke with no repercussions.
- 25:16It doesn't smell bad, it doesn't hurt my health.
- 25:19You get to look badass. I just get to look so
- 25:22cool. I have never looked cool. We talked about
- 25:26this on the way back from your birthday. I've
- 25:28never looked cooler in my life than when I was
- 25:29smoking. so no negative only positive i don't
- 25:32think that i would have ever had sex with a human
- 25:34being had i not been a smoker i'm not sure maybe
- 25:38i probably would have found my way there eventually
- 25:40but like it it really set the pace for me in
- 25:44my 20s i definitely had 100 of the sex that i
- 25:49had in my life as a smoker yeah well not like
- 25:52like every instance of it but but it was it was
- 25:54definitely a part of the darren right every partner
- 25:57i've ever slept with was while i was a smoker
- 26:01yeah yeah same same like that's at some point
- 26:04that's part of the thing is like if i read it
- 26:05back to like dating or whatever i'd be like uh
- 26:07oh fuck i have a smoky yeah yeah no i don't smoke
- 26:11and no no new pokes no again that you bring me
- 26:17in for the horn stuff that's good that's why
- 26:18you're here um you know one of the things that
- 26:22like continually stood out to me through the
- 26:25whole the whole movie was just like how did this
- 26:29get made right like how how like it like think
- 26:33about it in context of because we're as a cage
- 26:36match but like nicholas cage is not a big part
- 26:39of this it would have been killer had it been
- 26:42uh mickey rourke dennis hopper and nicholas cage
- 26:45like in the bedroom doing those sequences together
- 26:48that would have been a really fun watch i think
- 26:50it could have got wild but like we didn't get
- 26:51there so it's just like contextually this movie
- 26:54you have one of the best biggest directors in
- 26:57the world right he's picking up these this ip
- 26:59from as he hit and he makes outsiders which comes
- 27:02out six months before and like that's a kind
- 27:04of a hit oh yeah it launches careers it kind
- 27:07of sets the tone for all the big heartthrobs
- 27:09of the 80s like it launches that whole thing
- 27:11he's like all right so now i'm gonna do it again
- 27:13but like no i'm not gonna fucking do it again
- 27:14i'm gonna make this weird ass experimental kind
- 27:18of crazy film that looks beautiful it's some
- 27:21of the best black and white photography i think
- 27:23i've ever seen in my entire life i think the
- 27:24only other movie i've seen that looks as good
- 27:27The Man Who Wasn't There by the Coen Brothers.
- 27:29It's just exquisite black and white. This is
- 27:33maybe the best black and white I think I've ever
- 27:35seen. So this movie was shot back to back with
- 27:40The Outsiders. They kept the exact same production
- 27:43crew and everything. So I think that really helped.
- 27:46And just getting it made was the... They were
- 27:49writing the screenplay while filming The Outsiders.
- 27:54Was it the same director of photography between
- 27:56the two? I'd have to double check, but I know
- 27:59that Coppola wanted to keep his production crew
- 28:02from Outsiders into this. Probably would have
- 28:05been. I mean, you would think. That's a person
- 28:10at the top of their powers, right? They can go
- 28:12to any studio and be like, you're going to give
- 28:14me this much money, I'm going to make this movie
- 28:15and this movie simultaneously. And studio producers,
- 28:19you can't show up. You can't check in on what
- 28:22we're doing. Maybe they showed up one day on
- 28:23Outsiders and were like, oh, these are handsome
- 28:25boys. and like we're gonna we're gonna make a
- 28:26ton of money and they walked off and they didn't
- 28:28check in on rumble fish and rumble fish comes
- 28:30out you're like huh yeah this is a thing huh
- 28:34they tilted the camera a lot on this one didn't
- 28:36you buddy yeah so it was it was steven henry
- 28:39burham was his name i think this looks great
- 28:42oh we also did snake eyes oh wow so reunited
- 28:47mission impossible so i forgot about this in
- 28:52the beginning of the film when they like the
- 28:54first few like set up scenes they show like the
- 28:57city and they kind of like have it on a time
- 28:59lapse but it gave me like those old like the
- 29:03videos they'd show us when we were kids in schools
- 29:06like you know the mechanism of the economy see
- 29:11we were able to afford updated videos we weren't
- 29:16all sharing the same book and public domain 1945
- 29:23No, I was in Tillamook, Oregon, and they had
- 29:24a legit reel -to -reel projector they'd bring
- 29:27in with these old fucking old -ass tapes. The
- 29:30only time we ever had to watch one of those was,
- 29:32like, the first sex ed course I ever went through.
- 29:36Sending a chair. Yeah, the evolution, like, sitting
- 29:40in the future, I will include electricity. There's
- 29:43just nothing. Hard -on, through the screen, it's
- 29:47like, erections for all. racing into the sky.
- 29:54Trains going into tunnels, rocket ship. It's
- 29:57just an innuendo. It's not sex ed. It's just
- 30:01metaphors. I'm going to have a real hard time
- 30:04adjusting to... Although, Sean, I'm sold every
- 30:09time we do a time lapse at night of a city. If
- 30:12it's a pretty time lapse at night, I'm just like,
- 30:14let's just do it. Let's watch a city go to bed
- 30:17and wake up over a time lapse. I'm in. Every
- 30:20freaking time. What was the big billboard in
- 30:21that scene, that nighttime scene? Mayo? Mayo,
- 30:24I think. I'm sure it was probably like Mayo Clinic
- 30:26or something, but like the idea of a giant sign
- 30:29for... Oh yeah, just a giant sign for mayonnaise.
- 30:32Yeah, well you said there was like a magazine
- 30:34or something? Yeah, the magazine said something
- 30:38called Hamburger. Hamburger Magazine? Hamburger
- 30:42Magazine. Makes sense to me. I would subscribe.
- 30:46So are we going to start a hamburger magazine?
- 30:49Let's do it. Probably. It'd come out of left
- 30:51field. Nobody would expect it from me. So I think
- 30:53it needs to be large format twice a year. Like
- 30:56a really big thick one. Like really big time
- 30:58into it. Like the swimsuit edition. Big format
- 31:02twice a year. One seasonal hot dog. Real thick
- 31:06paper. Well there can be a hot dog centerfold.
- 31:09So that way you unfold the giant hot dog. Yeah.
- 31:14You can run your hands over. Ooh. One scratch
- 31:17and sniff page, yeah. We're on the same page.
- 31:19All right. Yes, absolutely. This is going to
- 31:21happen. Cool. Spare sourcing right now. Cage
- 31:23match. A roundabout way of starting a magazine.
- 31:26So I do want to come back to, like, Matt Dillon's
- 31:31performance real quick, because I think he's
- 31:34great in this, just as the fucking poser kid.
- 31:40what's up with the leather cuff like what's up
- 31:42with like the one like leather like fighting
- 31:44cuff just trying to look cool man it's just cool
- 31:47shit yeah i just like it's such it's such a vibe
- 31:52and i definitely knew this guy in high school
- 31:54like i definitely knew that guy who just wanted
- 31:58to be cool and was just projecting that image
- 32:00and story of himself out there and it was just
- 32:04easier to go along with it than to just be like
- 32:07nah dude So the Yahoo who comes into our podcast
- 32:10wearing their best fighting blouse has decided
- 32:14to critique the fashion of 1980s small town gang
- 32:20members. In the 80s, man, this was written in
- 32:23the 60s. I guess the movie moves it forward a
- 32:27little bit. Oh, man. Bandana Sean is not happy
- 32:33with Cuffy Dillon. For our listeners, just so
- 32:37everyone knows, this thing is like a button to
- 32:39ruffle just above the navel. Just pure midsection.
- 32:43There's full sternum bush on display. Sure. I
- 32:47can see your xiphoid process. That's true. Anybody
- 32:52know what that is? No. Not a fucking clue. No
- 32:54good. It is a small bone that hangs down at the
- 32:56center where your ribcage meets right here and
- 32:58holds it together. Is that the one you take off
- 33:01when you want to suck your dick? I mean, there's
- 33:03a lot. It's not going to hurt. No, it's not going
- 33:05to hurt. Actually, it will separate your ribcage.
- 33:06It's pretty critical linchpin in the whole chest
- 33:09area, but anyway. I got zip ties. This is a diphoid
- 33:12process. That's a weird name for a bone. I love
- 33:16it. That joke got me, but it did. Neat. Oh, man.
- 33:22I just, I kind of wonder, like, what happened
- 33:24to Matt Dillon? You know what I mean? I think
- 33:27it's the voice. Honestly, the whole time is...
- 33:29He sounds so dumb. He sounds like no dumb character.
- 33:33There's no way of taking the Matt Dillon voice
- 33:35and being like, well, you know, he's a respectable
- 33:39authority figure that you should, like, follow
- 33:41into the... Not a fucking chance. Like, you think
- 33:43about, like, so, okay, you take... The Outsiders
- 33:46group is really that group. So he was in the
- 33:47Outsiders as well. So you have, like, Cruz, and
- 33:49you have Rob Lowe, and you have... uh Swayze
- 33:52and there's a handful of other folks in there
- 33:55like uh but like he was also in there but like
- 33:58he could never really break out and I think it's
- 34:01the voice I think you're entirely right I was
- 34:03trying to pinpoint what it is and he's just it's
- 34:06a meathead voice he's also he's got like the
- 34:09real mouth breather look about him too yeah that's
- 34:12hard to get away from little simian yeah and
- 34:13a lumpy good looking guy not gonna yeah yeah
- 34:16yeah but monkey Yeah, like a good -looking monkey.
- 34:19That is a very handsome monkey. So, like, on
- 34:22that line, too, like, Mickey Rourke was a pretty
- 34:25good -looking dude. I mean, he's kind of strange
- 34:27-looking. I was thinking about it. It's like
- 34:28if Sam Rockwell and Stephen Dorff fucked, but...
- 34:31Let's take three seconds to think about that.
- 34:37It's working for me. Take him off. Put him on.
- 34:41Take him off, boys. But yeah, it's kind of a
- 34:44shame. I mean, he really did get fucked up. Like,
- 34:46he was... not a beautiful man but like i think
- 34:50the funny thing is in the in the movie you see
- 34:52him in the photo the motorcycle and he has long
- 34:55hair and he looks handsome man his haircut is
- 34:57so stupid it's very dumb whatever they do in
- 35:00this it's so stupid it's a real it's a real dork
- 35:03it looks like the haircut that every girl who's
- 35:06eventually going to be a lesbian gets in the
- 35:07eighth grade they're like oh that's who i am
- 35:10now i guess yeah it looked to me like he was
- 35:12going for some kind of a proto version of the
- 35:17misfits because they like just cut in yeah a
- 35:21uh a widow's peak on him yeah it's like forced
- 35:24widow's peak yeah this is my bangs now this this
- 35:28is how it's done he has such a gentle voice for
- 35:31the whole thing you get meathead matt dylan he's
- 35:35hey whatever i can't do it uh i'm not even trying
- 35:38but like uh yeah it's just like ah rusty you
- 35:43know these are yeah they belong in the river
- 35:47whatever and then it's just such a contrast to
- 35:50everybody else who's just coming off like really
- 35:52blunt and kind of ridiculous good character yeah
- 35:56it was a very it was that scene in the billiard
- 36:00hall when they're just like no man he's the king
- 36:03you're never gonna get there like you're just
- 36:04not gonna happen like that was i don't know there's
- 36:07just a bunch of really great scenes you could
- 36:09cut out those are very powerful moments and i
- 36:10think a lot of people in their life have lived
- 36:12through which is like they realize something
- 36:14about themselves that they're not going to be
- 36:15and like the whole movie the whole movie is actually
- 36:17matt dylan realizing like he's not who he thinks
- 36:20he is right yeah no uh but that scene where it's
- 36:23like you know you're not the king uh like because
- 36:26that's nick cage they're outside benny's um and
- 36:30it's like you're not the king it's like i would
- 36:32be the king and you'd be like a second lieutenant
- 36:34like that's the line or something but like at
- 36:37the end of that like confrontation when like
- 36:40rusty james realizes that you know yeah he's
- 36:43not who he thinks he is he's kind of a joke he's
- 36:45like he goes to you know like hand off the baton
- 36:49like hand it hand the pool cue to nick cage and
- 36:53like it's like all right it's you and nick cage
- 36:55just like what the fuck dude just cut it out
- 36:58like yeah we stop doing this now right i have
- 37:03diane lane uh the gang does not exist you're
- 37:08a silly man please stop doing performance i want
- 37:11to know i want a movie about that other gang
- 37:13the one they like effective gang the guy who
- 37:17got motorcycled the guy got up until he got motorcycled
- 37:20also like rusty james he gets his stomach cut
- 37:25open with a big old piece of glass and then gets
- 37:29fucking um piped to the head later like this
- 37:33movie gets super serious then gets super like
- 37:36just jokey real quick yeah i just think it's
- 37:41a dreamscape the whole thing it's just like a
- 37:43weird fevery surreal dream which is a cop -out
- 37:46i could have like leaned in and said yes but
- 37:48like the whole the whole thing is just like it
- 37:51is ridiculous it's just like young men being
- 37:54idiots And, like, overimagining their lives nonstop.
- 37:58And you're stuck with this guy who thinks he's
- 38:00going to be the most important human being ever.
- 38:01And he's like, eh, you're kind of a Dylan. You're
- 38:03kind of a Matt Dylan. Yeah, kind of a Matt Dylan.
- 38:06That's what he's a Matt Dylan, yeah. But, yeah,
- 38:11the fight scene, actually, I really like the
- 38:12fight scene. It reminded me a lot of Clockwork
- 38:14Orange, the big, like, gang scene there. And
- 38:16I think maybe a little bit of a play on that,
- 38:18which is, like, the gangs are so serious in that.
- 38:22And it might be the same thing. Clockwork Orange,
- 38:24the gangs are aging out and they're just becoming
- 38:27older men. That's what it is. They're probably
- 38:29the younger people who take over gangs or become
- 38:31gangs. And it's the same thing. You're too old
- 38:34for this shit, man. It's not fun anymore. Unlike
- 38:38Warriors, where being a gang is still incredible.
- 38:42You could dress up like a baseball boy or a clown.
- 38:45Whatever you want, man. That's what I liked about
- 38:48the other gang. They kind of had a theme going.
- 38:51They were a real gang, that's the difference.
- 38:54Murder? Kinda. They kinda had a vibe. Yeah. I
- 39:02still do think it felt like a double dragon fight.
- 39:06Oh yeah. You show up, everybody kind of kicking,
- 39:07a knife flies off, you pick up the knife, you
- 39:09can throw it twice before it disappears. I've
- 39:11got to show them with a motorcycle. Before the
- 39:15fight actually gets going, when they're just
- 39:16swinging at each other, Rusty James does do the
- 39:20hopping double kick a couple times. Yeah, it's
- 39:26very video game. Later on, when Rusty gets hit
- 39:30in the head with a pipe, and then Bicycle Boy.
- 39:33Sorry, Motorcycle Boy. Well, he didn't have the
- 39:36motorcycle at the time. Motorcyclist Boy shows
- 39:39up and fights. It's the worst choreography. It
- 39:43does bring us to the out -of -body experience.
- 39:45I like that scene a lot, actually. That was a
- 39:48cool effect. Yeah, so I was watching it in a
- 39:52chair with my headphones on in my head, and,
- 39:54like, the family was, like, over here doing stuff,
- 39:57right? Doing their own thing. And, like, that
- 39:59showed up, and I just went, like, hands up in
- 40:01the air, like, what the fuck is this? Like, I
- 40:04was not expecting it, like, delighted. I was
- 40:08kind of delighted non -stop by all the decisions
- 40:10that were being made, because, like... after
- 40:12the first 20 minutes it just was not boring like
- 40:14there was not a boring scene everything was kind
- 40:16of visually interesting they were making crazy
- 40:18decisions like did it add up to the best movie
- 40:21absolutely not so but if i was going to steal
- 40:23from a movie as a film director i would steal
- 40:26out of this movie like crazy there's so many
- 40:29things you could just rob from this movie and
- 40:30put into a better movie and it would be awesome
- 40:33I think that's the most agreeable sentence I've
- 40:37heard from this. I was not a huge fan of this
- 40:39one. I'll get that out of the way. It was the
- 40:43longest hour and a half that I think I've ever
- 40:46spent on this podcast. I'd say it a lot, too.
- 40:52Longer than Croods 2? Yeah, dude. This movie
- 40:55just felt like a full two -hour film when I was
- 40:59watching it. maybe maybe it's the theatricality
- 41:02uh being the theater major who doesn't like theater
- 41:05uh it doesn't catch me it's just there were some
- 41:10moments where i was like yeah that's great i
- 41:12forgot what got me started on this i think i
- 41:14think it's it's a it's a menu of really interesting
- 41:18vignettes and scenes and ideas you know and like
- 41:21it really again it feels like coppola was like
- 41:24really just scrubbing and trying to make like
- 41:26an indie movie trying things really like fucking
- 41:29around and like feeling his way through it it
- 41:31felt like that so like you know they're just
- 41:34shots that look really great again them walking
- 41:37through the downtown and like the audio shifts
- 41:39based on the character who's talking is a really
- 41:42brilliant idea and then like the out -of -body
- 41:45thing where he just like is floating through
- 41:46could have been terrible but again you're right
- 41:49you're right when you put a lot of uh forced
- 41:52uh artsy shit together yeah you're dragging me
- 41:56through a lot to try to sell this yeah to me
- 41:59it's like i was the whole time i was thinking
- 42:01oh sorry well and that's kind of where i wanted
- 42:04to like finally bring this to is so it's called
- 42:07rumble fish and the big metaphor for their situation
- 42:11at the end is are these fighting fish are the
- 42:13rumble fish that mickey rourke's obsessed with
- 42:15wants to steal and like set free and we get that
- 42:19like really on the nose scene but i feel like
- 42:22it worked really well after motorcycle boy's
- 42:24dead rusty james is like throwing the fish in
- 42:26the water and when he's thrown up against the
- 42:28cop car and for the first time he's in color
- 42:31like he sees his own reflection as those trapped
- 42:36fish and that's when he decides to leave i love
- 42:39that kind of crap i don't know i don't know why
- 42:42i just it was earned they they really held it
- 42:44for a long time yeah yeah yeah i thought it was
- 42:47earned like it's like i said it's a little on
- 42:48the nose but i loved it yeah i agree there's
- 42:51a lot of stuff like that but i agree like there's
- 42:53just these moments like ah i felt good and it
- 42:55wasn't too much like it's like the whole movie
- 42:56didn't flip to color it was just like a flash
- 42:58and then you come back yeah well and then there's
- 43:00that like extended And I just I love how it end
- 43:03with that extended long shot of the entire cast
- 43:06learning about Motorcycle Boy's death. And it's
- 43:09cut and it's like everyone has their kind of
- 43:11like little like moment of like you see everyone's
- 43:14like immediate reaction to the death. And then
- 43:17it just cuts to Motorcycle Boy Reigns and the
- 43:20silhouette of Matt Dillon like riding off to
- 43:23California. I'm like, which is super theatrical.
- 43:26It's like what Nick keeps talking about. It is
- 43:28a very. stage play so there's a there's a guy
- 43:31named james or jamie lloyd i forget how you actually
- 43:34say his name but i he's like the hot shit on
- 43:37like the western and broadway and everything
- 43:38he does has like projection screens and sexy
- 43:41people tight underwear it's like all that kind
- 43:43of stuff like this felt like a jamie lloyd production
- 43:45of a movie right had he been around in like 1983
- 43:49i feel like he would have made this movie i'm
- 43:52gonna make a controversial statement here i think
- 43:55my favorite character was the cop Because when
- 44:00he killed Motorcycle Boy, it meant the movie
- 44:02was over. Otherwise, the cops sucked. The cops
- 44:08were pretty bad. If you ask Nick what the narrative
- 44:10was, it was about a hard -nosed cop in Missouri
- 44:12dealing with a bunch of fucking pretentious assholes.
- 44:15Protecting a pet store. Nothing but steal from
- 44:18pet stores and cause fights. Saves the day again.
- 44:22Just keeps showing up. Sick -ass mustache. I
- 44:25will say, the fucking bullet wound was like...
- 44:29pretty gnarly yeah yeah i do like the cop a lot
- 44:34so i like how he like just stood there yeah he
- 44:37was like a monolith of like antagonism he was
- 44:40angel of death yeah like he was just waiting
- 44:42like the whole time he was just he was like because
- 44:44he never see his eyes why are you showing up
- 44:47he's like well because it's like shadow boy is
- 44:49a dead man like he's out like he came back from
- 44:52california he's destroyed he doesn't want to
- 44:54be a part of this he doesn't know where to go
- 44:55so he's gonna go he's like check out his gun
- 44:58there was a eventually he's gonna go check out
- 45:00yeah check out yeah we have a lot of checkouts
- 45:03cops in the country these days that is true they're
- 45:05always sure you show up at the screen early on
- 45:08in the newsreel and well that's gonna turn into
- 45:10a problem and it really does not get too political
- 45:12but there we are well like i mean the cop even
- 45:15has his own other than just yeah being you know
- 45:17the harbinger of doom you know also uh when rusty
- 45:22james like asks him in the middle of the films
- 45:24like what's your problem with motorcycle boy
- 45:26and the cop's response is like i see the one
- 45:28thing you don't which is you know everyone looks
- 45:32up to this thing and up to motorcycle boy and
- 45:34like romanticizes that and he's like that's just
- 45:37trouble that's just going to lead to more dead
- 45:39kids and you know in the end kills motorcycle
- 45:43boy and the other cops want to take in um rusty
- 45:47james and he's the one who's like no let him
- 45:49go like this is over now yeah there is heavily
- 45:52an element of like this is the end of an era
- 45:54yeah the whole thing like the whole thing starts
- 45:56is like we're at the very tail end of something
- 45:59and people need to like transition and move on
- 46:00kind of thing yeah it's the decay of like this
- 46:03previous culture that maybe wasn't so great to
- 46:05begin with but like the romanticism is wearing
- 46:07off and i think like you're uh we're talking
- 46:09about earlier like uh cage's whole thing about
- 46:12like why are you hanging against pool cubes it's
- 46:14stupid like we're out of this you know what i
- 46:16mean like just move on you're being a child yeah
- 46:19all right final thoughts i liked it I said that
- 46:24at the beginning. I'm saying it again. It grew
- 46:28on me a lot, for sure. I understand where you're
- 46:30coming from, though, Nick. I mean, it's fine.
- 46:32I'm not upset about not liking it. It's not going
- 46:37to make me lose sleep. Did you watch Primal right
- 46:42after it as a palate cleanser? No, I think I
- 46:46just went and cranked one out. There we go. To
- 46:50Diane Lane. Diane Lane. God bless Diane Lane.
- 46:56Modern Diane Lane. Diane Lane at any decade,
- 47:00let's be fair. She's just working it. Yeah, I
- 47:05don't know. I didn't like it for the first 20
- 47:06minutes. I fell asleep last night, but it was
- 47:08a bad time to start. I watched it again this
- 47:10afternoon and ended up really enjoying it. Will
- 47:13I watch it again ever? No. But will I go and
- 47:16find scenes from it online and probably be like...
- 47:19look at it a little deeper no yeah i know what
- 47:27you're talking about i got shit things to look
- 47:28at on instagram or something yeah i'm not studying
- 47:31things from rumble yeah i think it's totally
- 47:36worth a watch i think especially if you're into
- 47:37photography and that's part of like what you
- 47:39like about movies like it looks great Yeah, if
- 47:42you have the longest hour and a half of your
- 47:44life just sitting there in front of you with
- 47:47nothing else to do. If the doctor tells you the
- 47:50cancer is incredibly aggressive and you have
- 47:52two hours left. Whoa, do something better. Make
- 47:55some macaroni and cheese. Well, you just want
- 47:57it to spread out. You just want to see how long
- 47:58can you make it. A bowl of mac and cheese that
- 48:02takes about 15 minutes to make. And then watch
- 48:04Rumblefish. and you know you got you got another
- 48:07month you got one more month of your life right
- 48:09there i think if i had an okay hold on if i had
- 48:13an hour and a half to live i would probably do
- 48:17the most like ridiculous like unbelievable like
- 48:22i would have sex with that bowl of mac and cheese
- 48:24sure and i'd leave it on the counter that's like
- 48:26three minutes that's somebody else yeah Max,
- 48:29you're done. Well, yeah, you know, I'm already
- 48:32hot and bothered by their mixing noises. I think
- 48:35if you're going to have an hour and a half, you've
- 48:38got to leave post -nut clarity for, like, the
- 48:40last 45 seconds. Like, that has to be an epiphany
- 48:43moment. Like, you have to, like, save that for
- 48:45the very last minute. And then you do your thing,
- 48:50and you're like, oh, I get it now, and then you're
- 48:52out. What if I have sex with a mac and cheese?
- 48:56Okay. I watched the last 45 seconds. Just the
- 48:59last 45 seconds. Straight to it. Fucking garbage
- 49:03memes on Instagram the rest of the day. Then
- 49:07we'll say you lived a great life. That's a life
- 49:09well lived. Going out strong. Alright, well,
- 49:13thank you all for listening. You can find us
