- 0:16These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:19world famous Harley Street. This podcast features powerful
- 0:23hypnosis, so do not listen while driving or operating machinery.
- 0:27This recording is not suitable for those with epilepsy or
- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:40Hi. It's Adam here and in this
- 0:42episode of The Hypnotist, you're going to be listening to a
- 0:45hypnosis session created for a younger client.
- 0:50I don't work a lot with children, but occasionally I do.
- 0:53And I find that working with children is easier in some in in
- 0:58some instances because the imagination tends to be almost
- 1:02more powerful, more creative. And I was working with this
- 1:06particular client who had anxiety at the thought of doing
- 1:11certain things. And, and what can happen there
- 1:13is the anxiety linked to the thought of doing it can actually
- 1:18lead to self fulfilling prophecies.
- 1:20Because if avoidance is used to stop the anxiety, then it
- 1:25creates a belief that somehow it's dangerous or that they're
- 1:30incapable of doing that. And then you actually get this
- 1:32kind of anxiety loop. So generally avoidance isn't the
- 1:36best strategy in the long term. It can feel like it's helping
- 1:41the short term, but in the long term, it's not really helping.
- 1:43So what I wanted to do, and this was a child that was old enough
- 1:48that they regularly played video games.
- 1:50So they had this kind of intuitive idea of games are fun
- 1:55games are there. To be played.
- 1:56You get better the more you play the game and the most games have
- 2:00levels. So this was.
- 2:01Used as a metaphor to have 7 levels of difficulty.
- 2:06So I worked with this. You know, hypnotherapist
- 2:09listening will get the idea of desensitization.
- 2:12Desensitization without accessing a resource state first
- 2:16generally isn't the best way of doing it.
- 2:17Much better to get someone in a very, very resourceful state and
- 2:21when they're in a resourceful state, then get them doing the
- 2:23thing that they thought they couldn't do.
- 2:25So there's an element of desensitization here.
- 2:27There's an element of future pacing.
- 2:30It's definitely one level of disassociation because it uses a
- 2:33gaming metaphor, but also it's associating the resource states
- 2:38because although it's disassociated by one level, it's
- 2:41then taking a first person perspective within the game.
- 2:44So they get to access the resource states in a safe
- 2:47environment because it's just this idea of playing a game, but
- 2:50they activate the very resource states contextually to where
- 2:53they would actually need them. And lots of suggestions that by
- 2:57doing this, they become more courageous, they become brave,
- 3:00they become more confident, and the more confident they are, the
- 3:04less anxiety appears. So there's lots of.
- 3:07Very clear suggestions and this is aligned with homework for
- 3:12this particular client. To then go off and do.
- 3:15These things. So I would encourage you if you
- 3:18have anxiety at the thought of doing something, make it your
- 3:23mission to do that thing. Because actually, if you avoid
- 3:27it because you feel anxious, then actually the anxiety
- 3:32becomes more real because your action indicates the genuineness
- 3:38of the anxiety. You can treat a lot.
- 3:41Of. Anxious.
- 3:43Thoughts as Bluffs? And actually, if you call the
- 3:45bluff, 9 times out of 10 the anxiety isn't there.
- 3:49And even if it is there, it's temporary and manageable.
- 3:52And by thinking of it in that way, then actually it encourages
- 3:56you to do the. Thing that you.
- 3:57Fear. And in doing so, anxiety becomes
- 4:01less and less controlling in your life.
- 4:04You don't have to be a child to benefit from this session.
- 4:06It uses a gaming metaphor, but you could just treat it as a
- 4:09guided meditation as 2 levels. There are references to using
- 4:14the toilet in this because part of their anxiety was this idea
- 4:18of how they would go to the toilet in different places,
- 4:21particularly unfamiliar environments.
- 4:24That's quite a unique anxiety. Disregard any suggestions that
- 4:29aren't relevant for you and maybe change them to ones that
- 4:32would be more suitable. But equally, if you do want
- 4:35something a bit more bespoke that enables you to access
- 4:38resource states for things that you have been worrying about,
- 4:42click the link in the show notes and schedule that free
- 4:43consultation call and we'll have a chat to see if on the right
- 4:46therapist to work with you. For now though, find a quiet,
- 4:49comfortable place where you won't be disturbed.
- 4:51Relax and. Enjoy the session.
- 5:20Take a deep. Breath in, and as you breathe
- 5:24out, just close your eyes. That's it.
- 5:31When you breathe in, breathe in deeper than you normally would,
- 5:36and when you breathe out, just make that outward breath longer
- 5:43and slower. That's it.
- 5:48And then breathe in this wonderful feeling of relaxation.
- 5:53Breathing in relaxation and exhaling.
- 6:00Any worries, any stress, any tension.
- 6:04And when you breathe in, just imagine breathing in a glowing
- 6:14colour, perhaps bright yellow or orange, and imagine breathing in
- 6:23a colour of confidence and courage.
- 6:28As you breathe in that bright colour, feel all of that
- 6:32confidence and courage going in. And as you exhale, notice a
- 6:39shadowy colour leaving your body.
- 6:43And those shadows represent any worries or anxiety.
- 6:50Just feel them leaving your body as you breathe out, breathing in
- 6:57that courage and confidence and breathing out warriors or
- 7:01anxiety. And the deeper you breathe, the
- 7:06more relaxed you become. And the more relaxed you become,
- 7:13the deeper you breathe. Eyelids feeling heavier and
- 7:17heavier, breathing slower and slower, arms and legs just
- 7:25feeling very relaxed and loose and heavy.
- 7:32And I want you to use the power of your imagination to imagine
- 7:40you are in a futuristic room, and somewhere in this room is a
- 7:48virtual reality headset. And you get to play a game, a
- 7:56game of seven levels, each level slightly more challenging than
- 8:06the last. But this game is simple.
- 8:12When you complete one level, you level up and start to play the
- 8:18next level. And when you complete all of the
- 8:23levels, you've completed the game.
- 8:27And when you complete the game, things that may stir, make you
- 8:32feel worried or stressed will no longer make you feel worried or
- 8:37stressed. Things that used to make you
- 8:40feel anxious will no longer make you feel anxious because when
- 8:47you do the thing you used to not be able to do, all of the
- 8:53anxiety goes away. Fear and courage do not coexist.
- 9:04That if you feel the fear and act courageously anyway, the
- 9:10fear disappears. So imagine with that virtual
- 9:17reality headset on, you are now accessing level 1.
- 9:27I want you to imagine you're in your home and on a sunny day
- 9:33just imagine going for a walk to the nearby lake.
- 9:39A slow, enjoyable, relaxing walk.
- 9:45And maybe you see other people walking their dogs and maybe you
- 9:51see ducks or Swans. They're in the lake and maybe
- 9:59there is things to see or do when you get to the lake, but I
- 10:05want you to notice that as you imagine walking towards the
- 10:08lake, you feel relaxed, you feel calm, you feel confident, you
- 10:17feel that you can handle this very easy challenge.
- 10:27And if you could imagine walking around the lake and then
- 10:29returning home, just let me know by nodding your head.
- 10:44That's it, and you've completed level 1 and see on the screen
- 10:51the words level 2. So imagine perhaps being a
- 10:58passenger in a car being driven to a new shopping mall.
- 11:06The challenge here is to walk around the shopping mall, see
- 11:13the different shops, maybe get something to eat, and then
- 11:19before you leave, just use the public toilets perhaps and #1
- 11:25and #2 or even. Both.
- 11:28And then leave. But imagine that this little
- 11:38walk around the shopping mall, it doesn't make you feel anxious
- 11:43and makes you feel curious, makes you feel intrigued.
- 11:52You've never been to this shopping mall before and you
- 11:56want to see if it's different here compared to other malls
- 11:58you've been to. And if you could imagine
- 12:03spending a couple of hours at a new shopping mall and enjoying
- 12:06that walk around the shopping mall, let me know about nodding
- 12:10your head. Now it's in and you've
- 12:28completed. Level 2.
- 12:31So now let's imagine it's the beginning of Level 3.
- 12:35You're no longer in the shopping mall.
- 12:38You are approaching a forest and maybe it's sunny, and maybe it's
- 12:45cloudy and maybe it's cold and maybe it's warm.
- 12:53But I want you to imagine this isn't just visiting a forest,
- 12:59it's hiking in the forest, not just following the pathways, but
- 13:06following a different route, maybe a route that nobody's ever
- 13:10walked before. I want you to imagine as you
- 13:15breathe in and you breathe out, breathing in that forest air,
- 13:20seeing all of those leaves, having a sense of relaxation,
- 13:29being away from normal life, being away from the house makes
- 13:33you feel relaxed and calm and comfortable.
- 13:38And then you realise you've been walking around the forest for a
- 13:41while and you need to go to the toilet.
- 13:45So imagine you have some toilet tissue nearby, or maybe some wet
- 13:49wipes. You find a private place where
- 13:55no one else is around and you just go to the toilet there in
- 13:59nature and notice how easy it was.
- 14:09It's as natural as can be. If you think of the forest
- 14:18animals or even your ancestors from thousands and thousands of
- 14:23years ago, you're not doing anything that they didn't do.
- 14:28And when you can imagine hiking around the forest, going to the
- 14:38toilet if you need to, and then returning home.
- 14:41Let me know about nodding your head.
- 14:53That's in and you've completed Level 3, and now level 4 is
- 15:01about to start. Imagine packing your bags.
- 15:05About to go on a skiing trip, packing whatever you need for
- 15:09this few days away. Imagine arriving at the ski
- 15:19resort and notice this challenge is all about lots of little
- 15:26challenges, trying things you've never tried before.
- 15:33Different routes, different styles of skiing, a new trick, a
- 15:38new technique. Just imagine this holiday is all
- 15:43about you leaving your comfort zone, deliberately choosing to
- 15:48do challenging things, not because you need to do them
- 15:53perfectly, just attempting the challenging things is more than
- 15:59enough to pass this level. So if you can imagine a few days
- 16:06at a ski resort and feel that you're choosing to do difficult
- 16:12and challenging things and that makes you feel like you're
- 16:14growing, becoming brave and more.
- 16:17Courageous. You feel that your life is
- 16:20expanding. Let me know by nodding your
- 16:21head. That's in and you've now
- 16:34completed Level 4. Level 5 is about to begin.
- 16:39And just imagine an amusement park, a theme park with fast
- 16:44rides and tall roller coasters. The challenge here is to find
- 16:52the fastest rides or the highest roller coasters and do as many
- 16:57as you can, knowing that the more you do, the less anxiety
- 17:03you will have in the future. You don't mind queuing a bit,
- 17:11but you notice each time you do a ride that you were feeling
- 17:18scared about. The tiny anxiety on the 1st go
- 17:24disappears if you do the same ride a second time.
- 17:31And that is just like life, that if you do something challenging,
- 17:38it becomes so difficult to feel the same emotion if you do it a
- 17:45second time. And when you can imagine getting
- 17:54in a roller coaster and going all the way to the very top and
- 17:59feeling excited as you go down and perhaps loop around, feel
- 18:06exhilaration. If you could imagine riding a
- 18:08roller coaster like that, and as you leave feeling a sense of
- 18:13bravery and courage and confidence, let me know by
- 18:16nodding your head. That's in you've completed Level
- 18:315, and now Level 6 is a school trip.
- 18:37You're not sure where exactly, but allow your mind to fill in
- 18:42the blanks as you imagine taking a coach ride and feeling that
- 18:48you can enjoy the coach ride. No matter.
- 18:51Who you're sitting next to? Well, who else is on the coach?
- 18:56You feel that you can really enjoy that coach ride.
- 19:01Or maybe you feel so relaxed you can sleep through part of it.
- 19:06Imagine arriving at the accommodation, finding where
- 19:10you're going to sleep, feeling relaxed, calm and confident.
- 19:17You feel like this is relaxing for you.
- 19:23It's about fun and relaxation. And maybe you can think of
- 19:29different activities, perhaps being on zip wires or high walks
- 19:38and imagine doing these challenging things and not only
- 19:42not feeling anxious, but feeling like you can really enjoy it.
- 19:46And when you can imagine a school trip like that, what you
- 19:55feel like you're learning and growing and expanding, let me
- 19:59know by nodding your head. That's it.
- 20:13You've completed Level 6 as you feel a huge sense of
- 20:18satisfaction, of confidence, knowing that you are evolving,
- 20:25becoming more and more confident with each level accomplished.
- 20:31But it's now the final level. And just imagine you have an
- 20:35appointment, maybe with a doctor, a nurse, or maybe with a
- 20:42dentist. I don't want you to get a sense
- 20:46that there is a procedure that requires some form of injection.
- 20:55But here's the thing. People that feel anxious about
- 21:00injections think about the injection.
- 21:04And those people that don't choose to think of all of the
- 21:09other things there are to think about.
- 21:12Maybe they listen to music, maybe they read something, maybe
- 21:19they're playing a game or just lost in their own imagination.
- 21:24They just don't look or think at the place where the injection
- 21:29will be. So I want you to imagine it's
- 21:35time for the injection and it's just meaningless to you, of no
- 21:40consequence whatsoever. You're looking at a different
- 21:45direction and maybe you're even imagining being somewhere else,
- 21:50not even in that room, not even in your own body, only returning
- 21:55when the procedure is done. I want you to get a sense then,
- 22:04by thinking about it in this way.
- 22:07Not thinking simply means that all you're now dealing with is a
- 22:16tiny sensation that lasts just a second or two.
- 22:21So imagine you're looking the other way, and before you know
- 22:26it, they say it's finished. And that's all it took to
- 22:32accomplish the most difficult level, level 7.
- 22:35And when you can imagine that happening, that you have
- 22:40whatever injection you need for dental or medical reasons, let
- 22:46me know by nodding your head. Now it's in and you've completed
- 23:12level 7, but I want you to imagine there's one final level
- 23:19in this game and that is that you imagine seeing your future
- 23:25self one or two years in the future.
- 23:30Notice what age you are and just observe as you see yourself
- 23:34doing all of the things that in the past would have caused
- 23:38worries or stress. I want you to visit that future
- 23:42where none of these things bother you anymore because you
- 23:48know that by passing these levels and accomplishing these
- 23:52challenges, the anxiety went away and never came back in the
- 23:59same intensity. And when you can see the future
- 24:03the way that you want it to be, let me know by nodding your
- 24:05head. And now it's time to leave.
- 24:29So you find yourself back in that futuristic room, taking off
- 24:33the VR headset, placing it down, but noticing an absence of any
- 24:38worries or anxiety in your body. You feel free, you feel relaxed,
- 24:45you feel calm and you feel confident.
- 24:49You feel that this is easy for you now, and you're looking
- 24:53forward to doing what you did in this imaginary game in reality
- 25:00to turn fears and anxiety into courage and confidence.
- 25:07So take a deep breath in through your nose and breathe out
- 25:12through your nose. Just wiggle your fingers and
- 25:15wiggle your toes. Connect fully into the here and
- 25:18now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 25:24Starting the count 123 Waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 25:33Open your eyes. Open your eyes. 910.
- 25:35Wide awake, Wide awake, wide awake.
