- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here. And this is a slightly more
- 0:44serious hypnosis session in the sense that it was created for a
- 0:48client that had symptoms of depression.
- 0:52And I'd encourage you to make a big, big distinction between the
- 0:57identity of being depressed and feeling low mood or feeling sad
- 1:03or feeling hopeless. Because all emotions are
- 1:07temporary, nobody's felt a single emotion forever, and
- 1:12therefore the world and life itself is a.
- 1:15Palette of lots of. Different colours, but this
- 1:19particular client was feeling in a low mood and they were kind of
- 1:24feeling disconnected. And therefore it uses certain
- 1:29metaphors that are quite good to inspire feelings of hope and joy
- 1:35while still addressing that it's OK to feel sad sometimes.
- 1:39It uses a weather metaphor, you know, unless you live in certain
- 1:44parts of the world where it's sunny all the time.
- 1:46I'm in England and it certainly isn't like that.
- 1:49You have good sunny days, blue skies and then you have Gray
- 1:53skies. And that's quite a good metaphor
- 1:55to kind of highlight mood sometimes.
- 1:59In fact, in cartoons and comic strips, someone depressed quite
- 2:03often has a a dark rain cloud following them around wherever
- 2:06they go. So this is a a cultural
- 2:09metaphor. But here's the thing, the
- 2:12weather is always temporary. Moods are always temporary.
- 2:15And what if rather than relying on external things to make you
- 2:20feel happy, there's something intrinsic?
- 2:22So this is based on this idea of an internal light within.
- 2:26So there's very powerful metaphors here.
- 2:28Now, this isn't a substitute for qualified medical advice.
- 2:32If you think you might be suicidal, if you think you might
- 2:36be clinically depressed, it's not right for you to make that
- 2:41diagnosis yourself, and certainly going online isn't
- 2:44going to be enough for that. I would encourage you to check
- 2:47out a doctor, your doctor, make an appointment and let them know
- 2:52specifically. And then even then ask for a
- 2:55second opinion or a more specialist, you know, kind of
- 3:00to, to kind of look at your specific situation.
- 3:03And even if they do say that you are clinically depressed, I
- 3:08would encourage you to look at that as that is a temporary
- 3:12statement. I've worked with people that
- 3:14they were told over a decade ago, not even they're depressed.
- 3:18They were just given a prescription for antidepressants
- 3:22and then they took on the identity, a permanent label of
- 3:25I'm depressed. And it made sense of their world
- 3:29for that moment. But then it became an identity
- 3:31that carried with them. So even if you are diagnosed
- 3:35with depression, considerate for the time being, you know, use
- 3:39any resources that you can, but really focus on things within
- 3:43your control as well. Eating well, sleeping well, good
- 3:47connections and friends, hobbies and things that make you feel
- 3:52stimulated and you're learning something.
- 3:54It's not just the situation of you're depressed and therefore
- 3:58you have antidepressants and a lot of research has looked at
- 4:01this idea of depression being a chemical imbalance as faulty
- 4:07research. But most people know that if
- 4:10you're in low mood, you're going to have different
- 4:13neurotransmitters firing than if you feel amazing.
- 4:16You're going to have less serotonin and oxytocin.
- 4:19So if you think you might be depressed, get yourself checked
- 4:23out. There are lots of help lines for
- 4:25anyone feeling suicidal. This is not a substitute for
- 4:27this, but if you are in low mood, this session might help to
- 4:32lift your spirits and to find something within and to give it
- 4:35a framework which is empowering. So I would encourage you to find
- 4:39a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be distracted or
- 4:42disturbed. Relax and see if you can find
- 4:45some enjoyment in this session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 5:12you breathe in, breathe in a wonderful feeling of calm, a
- 5:19relaxing sensation, and as you exhale, feel a sense of release
- 5:31that any emotions you're holding on to that aren't that useful
- 5:38can be detached, released, and you can let go and feel it flow
- 5:49in your outward breath. I don't want you to imagine that
- 5:57if hope had a colour, what colour would hope be?
- 6:05Some people would think of a bright yellow, a warm blue, a
- 6:12pastel orange. But whatever color comes up for
- 6:17you, embrace it, acknowledge it, and as you breathe in, imagine
- 6:24breathing in wonderful feeling color and sensation of hope.
- 6:34I just imagine because it's a warm colour, it can melt away
- 6:42any thoughts, beliefs and stories of hopelessness.
- 6:46The hopelessness melt away and is replaced by a feeling of warm
- 6:52hope. And as you exhale, just imagine
- 6:56a dark shadowy colour leaving your body and you're out with
- 7:02breath. That's it.
- 7:07Consider this an emotional transfusion.
- 7:14Breathing in the resources that are useful and exhaling any
- 7:22emotions that aren't useful right now.
- 7:29Breathing in what you need, exhaling what you don't.
- 7:36That's it. And I want you to imagine there
- 7:42is something within you that is hopeful, smiling, energetic, and
- 7:52creative, but it's trapped in a block of ice.
- 7:59And as you breathe in, just imagine that positive version of
- 8:06you is seeing the ice slowly melt.
- 8:14Each breath of warm hope is melting away the prison of that
- 8:19ice. And slowly but surely, you're
- 8:26starting to free that version of you.
- 8:30Not immediately, but each breath thaws the ice a bit more.
- 8:39And you've seen ice accules melting on a spring day.
- 8:45You've seen sunshine beaming down on snow.
- 8:54And you know what it looks like to see snow or ice melt?
- 9:01And just imagine that prison of ice trapping that version of you
- 9:07is slowly melting with every breath.
- 9:12And maybe you're 100 or 200 breaths away from freeing that
- 9:19creative, positive, energetic version of you.
- 9:27Each breath contributes to the melting of that ice.
- 9:33And as your body relaxes, your imagination awakens.
- 9:39And I want you to imagine a forest on a sunny day and just
- 9:45imagine what it would feel like to have the warmth of the sun on
- 9:50your skin under blue skies, exploring and foraging around a
- 9:58a forest looking for mushrooms. You're developing an eye for
- 10:07where they may be, the colour, the texture, and maybe there's a
- 10:14dog running around helping you. And just imagine floating into
- 10:20that version of you, feeling what you would feel like to feel
- 10:26the energy of walking around, breathing in fresh air, sunshine
- 10:31on your skin, surrounded by nature, and just connect with
- 10:36that ever increasing positive feeling.
- 10:43That's it. And just allow your breath to
- 10:50continue being deep, continuing to thaw that ice within.
- 10:59And I want you to know that wherever you are right now,
- 11:05whatever you're carrying, there is no need to put it down or
- 11:10pretend it isn't there. You can bring it with you into
- 11:15this space. This space is large enough to
- 11:20hold all of it, and sometimes the heaviest thing is the effort
- 11:27of appearing fine, of coping, of managing, of holding everything
- 11:35together for everyone else. But right here and right now,
- 11:43you don't have to do any of that.
- 11:46Just breathe. Not a special breath, just the
- 11:53breath that's already happening, the one that's been keeping you
- 11:59going. That quiet, faithful thing that
- 12:03has carried you through every difficult day you've ever had.
- 12:10And there have been some difficult ones.
- 12:15And you are still here. Evidence of your resilience,
- 12:21inner strength, a part within you that still has hope.
- 12:29So notice the weight of your body, the places where you are
- 12:34held and supported. Feel the sensation of that
- 12:43material beneath you, clothes on your skin.
- 12:49But feel supported. And just for now, you don't have
- 12:59to carry yourself, you can just relax and the world outside can
- 13:07simply wait. Wait because it will still be
- 13:13there and you will meet it again.
- 13:19But not yet. Not quite yet.
- 13:28I'd like you to imagine that forest.
- 13:34The weather changes. I want you to imagine that
- 13:38rather than sunshine, you're seeing heavy clouds.
- 13:43One of those grey, flat days where the sky seems to press
- 13:48down, where the light feels thin and the world feels muted.
- 13:59And I want you to think about something about that sky.
- 14:06Is the sun gone on those days? The days of heavy cloud?
- 14:13Well, does the sun still exist? It's just simply obscured.
- 14:20It's there even if you can't see it and you know the sun is
- 14:26there. It's not stopped burning, it's
- 14:30not moved. It's precisely where it always
- 14:34is. The cloud simply sits between
- 14:39you and it. And clouds, no matter how heavy,
- 14:47no matter how long they've been there, always temporary.
- 14:55Clouds aren't permanent. Emotions and moods aren't
- 15:00permanent. And the part of you that feels
- 15:06joy? Part of you that feels creative,
- 15:12part of you that can get lost in your own imagination when
- 15:17walking in a forest or doing something creative.
- 15:23The part of you that smiles when people think about you and plan
- 15:26something special. The part that has plans and
- 15:31ideas and a particular way of seeing things that is uniquely
- 15:35yours. That part has not gone anywhere.
- 15:42It's just temporarily behind the clouds.
- 15:47Exactly where it has always been, patient, waiting, intact.
- 16:00And as you breathe in that hope, you can imagine going deeper.
- 16:07Not deeper into the heaviness, but deeper through it.
- 16:11Down through the cloud layer, down toward the part of view the
- 16:17weather cannot touch. I'll countdown from 12:50 and
- 16:22you will imagine going beyond the clouds, 1098.
- 16:29Going gently deeper 765. Heaviness becoming lighter as
- 16:40you descend through it rather than sitting beneath it. 4, 3,
- 16:502:00 and 1:00. And now, as you imagine the
- 16:57forest, it's back to sunshine. There is a quality of light,
- 17:03softer than sunshine, but steady.
- 17:07The light that is simply yours and has always been yours.
- 17:17We're going to spend some time here with this light.
- 17:27Everyone feels different emotions, different times.
- 17:37Everyone can feel low and sad sometimes.
- 17:42There's a particular kind of darkness, and one of the
- 17:47features of being in that mood is the way the brain starts to
- 17:53edit and change memory and possibility.
- 17:56It can make it difficult to remember feeling well, and
- 18:03difficult to imagine feeling differently.
- 18:08It narrows the view to the immediate and the difficult and
- 18:13whispers that this is simply how things are.
- 18:19Because right now I know that your unconscious is listening.
- 18:24I will say directly that what you are experiencing is real.
- 18:34The sadness, emptiness, heaviness is real.
- 18:39Low energy is real. The feeling of not being good
- 18:43enough is real. And though it's not accurate,
- 18:50it's still real emotions. There is an important difference
- 18:57between those two things. Something can feel completely
- 19:03true and still be a symptom rather than a fact.
- 19:12There was perhaps a moment in your childhood thinking of Santa
- 19:16Claus or tooth fairies or something else magical, and the
- 19:22excitement and the joy was real, even if the belief behind it was
- 19:27false. And you've had times when you've
- 19:32had a fever and you felt cold even when it was warm.
- 19:40Or the way that grief makes the future feel impossible, even
- 19:45when it's not. You are not broken, and you are
- 19:52not beyond help. You are not a burden.
- 19:58You are someone whose nervous system has been running on empty
- 20:03for long enough that it has begun to send distress signals,
- 20:09and those signals are asking for something, not announcing a
- 20:15permanent state. And what if what you feel right
- 20:20now is real and also not the whole truth?
- 20:27What if both things are true at the same time?
- 20:36And if there's a particular thought, even if it's only
- 20:40fleetingly popped up any idea that people you love might
- 20:46somehow be better off without you, I want you to sit with that
- 20:51thought, just for a moment. Not to dismiss it, but to look
- 20:57at it carefully. Because when we look carefully,
- 21:03we find something unique, special, or unexpected inside
- 21:08it. Because that thought arises not
- 21:13in someone who doesn't care. It exists within someone who
- 21:18cares so deeply about the people they love that they've turned
- 21:24that care against themselves. Someone that has looked at pain
- 21:30and thought maybe my pain is their burden, and that thought,
- 21:38however painful, is actually evidence of an enormous heart.
- 21:45Someone that cares, someone that loves, because a person who
- 21:51didn't love their family couldn't have that thought.
- 21:55It requires love to generate it. And love, real love, cannot see
- 22:04clearly when it's turned inwards against itself.
- 22:10So your unconscious can hold this.
- 22:14The thought of others being better off is simply love that
- 22:20has become misdirected, love that is trying to protect
- 22:25others. And what that Love Actually
- 22:29needs needs to be turned gently outward again toward connection,
- 22:40toward the people, the people you love the most, the people
- 22:46you'd love to have more time to be with.
- 22:51And these people don't just want you here.
- 22:54They need you here. Not a version of you without
- 22:59struggle, and not a fixed or perfect or endlessly capable
- 23:05version. You, imperfect and still
- 23:13valuable, filled with creativity and warmth, a generous spirit
- 23:22that is uniquely yours. You are not a burden to the
- 23:29people you love you or someone they love.
- 23:37And the very essence of love needs you here and allow your
- 23:46unconscious to search. The kind of search through draw
- 23:54for something you know is there, the search for keys you've put
- 24:00somewhere and can't quite find them.
- 24:04And I want you to search not for something tangible, but a
- 24:06memory. It doesn't need to be a large or
- 24:11dramatic one, Just a moment where you felt genuinely like
- 24:18yourself, when something creative was flowing, when there
- 24:29was energy present, when you felt warmth for the people
- 24:34around you and it moved freely rather than being blocked.
- 24:43Maybe you can recall a moment of doing something inspired with
- 24:46creativity and in that moment, sometimes when you're immersed
- 24:53in something creative, time has a habit of disappearing in those
- 24:58moments. The way the body feels different
- 25:03when it's engaged in making or creating something beautiful.
- 25:12Or maybe you visit a memory of real connection, laughing with
- 25:17someone, feeling understood, being fully present with another
- 25:24person without the effort of managing how you appear.
- 25:31Maybe it's a hug, maybe it's something else.
- 25:34Just let that memory or that feeling return to your body, not
- 25:42as an instruction to feel differently, just as a reminder
- 25:49that this quality of experience is yours.
- 25:52It exists in you. It is part of your nervous
- 25:57system's genuine repertoire. And that sadness has made it
- 26:04harder to access, but not impossible.
- 26:11And when you relive that moment, even if it's just the idea of
- 26:15it, notice where in the body that memory lives.
- 26:22Sometimes intense memories come with a feeling, maybe a warmth
- 26:27in the chest, a lightness in the shoulders, a particular quality
- 26:35in the breath. Let it be there, however faint,
- 26:41because even a faint signal is a signal.
- 26:47And signals can be amplified and strengthened because the
- 26:53creative, loving, energetic part of you is not lost.
- 26:58It is resting, and it will return.
- 27:04It has always returned and always will.
- 27:07And what if there's something important to understand about
- 27:14how mood and action relate when you feel low?
- 27:22The brain tells a convincing lie about this.
- 27:27The lie sounds like this. When I feel better, I'll do
- 27:32things. It presents itself as
- 27:36reasonable, as self compassionate, as simply waiting
- 27:43for the right conditions. But the research and the real
- 27:50experiences of thousands of people who have come through
- 27:54this same darkness tells a different story.
- 28:00Paradoxically, the action comes first and the mood follows the
- 28:07action, not the other way round. And it doesn't need to be large
- 28:14action, It doesn't need to be a goal that will take months,
- 28:21happening in days, doesn't require an immediate
- 28:28transformation or a fake smile. But the pressure, the pressure
- 28:36of becoming a different person isn't pressure if it's broken
- 28:43down into small, manageable actions.
- 28:49Because even the smallest possible action still counts as
- 28:54something. Whatever creativity is for you.
- 29:00A paintbrush, sketching ideas, writing, just doing that even
- 29:08for 5 minutes, not because you feel like it, but because there
- 29:17is a part within you that loves it and it's still there.
- 29:26I want you to imagine a flower that's been deprived of sunshine
- 29:32and water. Imagine it wilted.
- 29:37And if the flower waited to feel strong again before it had water
- 29:41or sunshine, it would just get weaker and weaker.
- 29:45But the moment that wilted flower gets sunshine and
- 29:48rainwater, within minutes it starts to strengthen, revitalize
- 29:59and with creativity or movement. Connection is like sunshine and
- 30:05rainwater for you. It feeds the part within you,
- 30:12but likes to feel hope and joy, happiness and connection.
- 30:19And something wonderful happens in the nervous system when we do
- 30:22even tiny things like this. A small release of the chemicals
- 30:28that low mood starts to suppress, a tiny signal sent to
- 30:35the brain that says I did a thing.
- 30:40And the brain reliably responds to that signal.
- 30:45Not dramatically, but still measurably.
- 30:49And measurable is where we begin.
- 30:54You're unconscious. Can make a note of this not as a
- 30:58demand, but as an invitation that when darkness or heaviness
- 31:04or lowness is present, the smallest creative act, the
- 31:11briefest moment of engagement with something or someone that
- 31:15is genuine, is not a distraction from this low mood.
- 31:21It's the treatment. You do not need to wait to feel
- 31:27better, to begin. You begin and then you feel,
- 31:33even if it's just a little bit, you feel better.
- 31:40Small is not nothing, and small is where it starts.
- 31:45And what if there's a belief, one that's been present for a
- 31:54long time, perhaps longer than this current feeling of low
- 32:00mood, the belief that says I'm not good enough?
- 32:07And your unconscious can begin to examine this belief, not to
- 32:13fight it, but to ask some honest questions about where it came
- 32:18from and whether it was actually yours.
- 32:25Police are not born with us so much belief, such as programming
- 32:31installed by our parents. A newborn does not wonder
- 32:39whether they are good enough. They simply are holy and
- 32:45completely without condition or caveat.
- 32:52The sense of being not enough is learned, absorbed from an
- 32:58environment that perhaps had its own pain, its own limitations,
- 33:06its own difficulty. Loving well.
- 33:13And when love is conditional in childhood, when that warmth is
- 33:18inconsistent, when a child learns that they must earn their
- 33:24place, sometimes that child's nervous system encodes a rule
- 33:33that somehow they are only acceptable when they perform
- 33:38well enough, when they please well enough, when they manage
- 33:44well enough. That worthiness is conditional
- 33:51on them being valuable. Just allow a different way of
- 34:00perceiving it. That your worth is not something
- 34:04can be added to by achievement or subtracted from by struggle.
- 34:12It is simply there, underneath the cloud, underneath any
- 34:19depressive feelings, underneath the belief that was handed to
- 34:23you by someone who was themselves limited.
- 34:31It is there in the same way that joyful, loving part of you is
- 34:37there under the ice, the same way the sun is there on a grey
- 34:43day. Not earned, not at risk.
- 34:48Simply there. You are enough now, Not when you
- 34:58achieve more, and not when you feel better and not when you
- 35:02look different. Now you are enough.
- 35:11And let's take a trip into the future.
- 35:14Not far, perhaps. An occasion, a celebration, a
- 35:21recognition. Maybe you visit a room, a place
- 35:30already being prepared for you, A milestone, a representation of
- 35:41the value that you have created over years and years.
- 35:50Maybe you can imagine an invitation and your name is on
- 35:54the invitation. Maybe you can imagine balloons
- 35:58or people's faces smiling, and just imagine arriving not as the
- 36:09person who is struggling to find the light, or still under the
- 36:14eyes behind the clouds, but as the person beyond it.
- 36:22The person, the version of you who made it through this
- 36:25difficult period this season and emerged carrying something hard
- 36:30won and real. And see yourself like you're
- 36:35someone else. And notice how you're standing.
- 36:41And notice there's a quality in the posture that comes from
- 36:45having come through something. You don't need to be perfect,
- 36:51not finished, not fixed, but present.
- 36:57Notice what you're wearing. See the facial expressions in
- 37:03that version of you. Maybe smiling, laughing,
- 37:06talking, and how you are is enough.
- 37:12No need to embellish or exaggerate.
- 37:17People pay a compliment. You say thanks.
- 37:24The confidence that comes from having not met some external
- 37:30standard, but from being someone who chose one day at a time,
- 37:38moment by moment. Lots of small little wins.
- 37:46There'll be lots of people in that room who are glad you're
- 37:48there. We don't see what you imagine
- 37:53they see. They see warmth, competency,
- 37:59loyalty, dedication. So let yourself feel, even just
- 38:07briefly, what it might feel like to be that person standing in
- 38:14that room, having made it from here to there, one small win at
- 38:23a time. Every day you are here is a day
- 38:31you have chosen to be here, and that choice matters.
- 38:39You're allowed to receive help, and you're allowed to need
- 38:43support. And needing support is not
- 38:47weakness. It's how human beings are
- 38:53designed, collaborative, and you've carried difficult things
- 39:00before. Your past is full of evidence
- 39:04that you can endure, you can recover.
- 39:06You can wait for the clouds to pass and the ice to melt, and
- 39:15the creative part of you is still alive and thriving within
- 39:20you. And the more you reward that
- 39:29part within you, the more that part within you will grow.
- 39:38You are not a burden, you are a person.
- 39:43It's good to improve, it's good to get better, but that is not a
- 39:49requirement. You are worthy exactly as you
- 39:54are. Because feeling low, it's just
- 39:59like the weather, it's just a temporary state and just as the
- 40:06weather changes, so. With the emotions and feelings
- 40:13within you, you are good enough. You've always been good enough.
- 40:23You were good enough before and you are good enough now.
- 40:30And perhaps it's already that 200th breath.
- 40:35And just imagine that smiling, energetic, creative version of
- 40:40you is now free from the prison of ice.
- 40:45And just imagine the clouds are long gone and there is sunshine
- 40:48in the forest again. And just imagine connecting with
- 40:55that part within you that has hope, that has energy, that has
- 41:03creativity, unleashing a desire to make tiny action, small
- 41:10decisions that generate progress and tiny wins that move you
- 41:18forward one tiny step at a time. Imagine leaving the forest and
- 41:27floating back to the present. But give permission to feel
- 41:33however you feel and allow your unconscious to make tiny changes
- 41:41to enhance more of those resourceful feelings and less of
- 41:46those unresourceful feelings. Still breathing in that colour
- 41:51of hope and starting to think of all the things you can do.
- 42:00Take a deep breath in through your nose, Stand out through
- 42:05your nose and wiggle your fingers and wiggle your toes.
- 42:10Connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I now count
- 42:14from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 42:20Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 42:29Open your eyes. Open your eyes 910 Wide awake,
- 42:34Wide awake. Wide awake.
