- 0:00SPEAKER_00: If you're a driven, active person who wants to reach and pursue a higher quality life with some ambition, then guess what?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: This podcast is for you.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: This is the Driven Athlete Podcast.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: What's up, y'all?
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: It's your man, Dr.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Kyle.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: So this is uh I love talking about this stuff because it's really helped shift my mindset and awareness on what is it that I want to do and how do I get there.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: So, like for athletes in sports, for practice owners, for patients that want to get out of pain.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: It's like, what's the structure and the process to like to get the outcome you're looking for?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Well, I think the first thing is identifying what is it that you want.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Get super clear with like what what do you want?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Why are you here?
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: What are you looking for?
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: What what do you want?
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Um, I feel like Ryan Gosling on the notebook.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: What do you want?
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: It's not that simple.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Anyway, um, what do you what is identify super clearly like what is it that you want?
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: All right, and then identify that.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Or it's like, well, I want to get out of shoulder pain, all right, or um, I want to have a better physique.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: I want to lose weight, I want to have less body fat percentage and get in a better physique and body composition, and I want to feel stronger.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And then I want to identify that's where we can get in the funds, like the smart goals, the specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: SMART, a smart goal.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: So meeting all those parameters, it makes it super specific.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: We're making this fail-proof.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: There's like a 70% increased likelihood of reaching the goal you're looking for if you just write them down.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And if you have an accountability partner, it just adds it even more.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Um, like if you pay somebody as an accountability person, a coach, and you have it written down, and then you have a like a plan, it's extreme high likelihood that you're gonna reach that goal.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Um, so that's where you get into SMART goals.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Identify what is it that you actually want.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Write out the SMART goal, S M-A-R-T.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Um, and then next I would write out why.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Why is that important for you?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Why now?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Why do you even want to do this?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Like, if you've been battling shoulder pain for eight months, um, what happened the last seven months?
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Like then now is when you decided you want to start solving the problem.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Like, why is this important for you?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Why are you here?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Um, well, because I want to work out, right?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Here's responses we hear is like I want to be able to exercise.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: It's annoying, it's limiting me with my daily life.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: I can't put on a shirt or shower.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: There's usually a moment where people say, like, I was in the shower and I realized I couldn't like wash myself the right way because my arm hurt, or like I was having difficulty putting my shirt on in the morning and it's just hurting, and finally I've had enough.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So there's usually some kind of an event that usually triggers that where it's like, why now versus the past eight months, right?
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Um, and then why is it important to you?
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Like, what do you want?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Basically, why is it as important for what you want?
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Well, because I want to responsible be here is like I want to get my shoulder pain fixed and I want to not have my shoulder hurt anymore so that I can exercise better so that I can lose weight and stay consistent with my exercise and I can have a better physique, feel stronger, feel more energetic, feel more confident, be able to keep up and play with my kids versus like, no, I can't do that because of this, right?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Just feeling hampered and my life windows are closing, the curtains are closing of availability of doing activities in my life.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Um, so I don't want to accept that and I feel like I can improve it, right?
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: You totally can.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Let's get after it, right?
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: So we have what is it you want, a smart goal written out, as in like it's specific, it's measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: You have why that's important for you because this new change is difficult, right?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: It's hard.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Like you're gonna do some new exercises, some manual therapy things are gonna be uncomfortable.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: We're gonna dry needle, we're gonna stick needles in you, maybe.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: We're gonna add, we're gonna change some routines and lifestyle.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Um, and then you're gonna start working out, which is uncomfortable, right?
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: It's like you're burning, your muscles are uncomfortable, you feel like you're gonna throw up, you're out of breath, your lungs are burning, it's hard for your body, you have a headache with it.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Like, that's all uncomfortable things.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Why go through that?
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: You know what's more comfortable actually is letting your shoulder be.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Don't make any changes.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: That's very comfortable.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Um, just get button-down shirts, you don't have to put your shirt on over your head, problem solved.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Um, watch a lot of TV and eat comfort food.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: That's way more comfortable.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Man, I love eating a big bag of cheddar Doritos and watching a movie.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: So just get the family-sized bag from Costco and just go to town.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Go all the way down the bottom of the bag and get the biggest, fattest, cheesiest chips and just eat more of those.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Watching TV, don't make any changes in your life and just get clothing that accommodates your shoulder issue, and that way you don't feel it.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: That's way more comfortable.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: So, why do the uncomfortable thing of all these changes?
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Why is it important for you?
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And usually the answers we hear, and I've analyzed this myself, well, because like what sucks right now, right?
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Like my arm hurts.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: I don't want my arm to hurt.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: I have a better, a different vision for my life.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: I want to be able to exercise.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Um, I want to be in better physics, a better physique, better shape, better body composition.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: I want to feel stronger, lean, um, higher vitality, better energy.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: I can do fun act physical activities with my kids or my family or travel and not be hampered and do things that I want to do.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Um, that sounds way better to me.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: It just requires a little bit of change.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: So the pain of change has to be less than the pain that you're actually in.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: So, like the current pain that you're in and the current pain of the comfortability that you're in has to be worse than the pain and the cost of the change you're trying to do, to try to make.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Um, and when that happens, that's when people usually take action.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: And that's what usually call us or get in office, or just whatever you want to do in life.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: And I love this stuff.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: So that we have we have what you want, smart goals of how to achieve it, um, uh, why it's important for you.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: And now we're in like the actual course of action.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: And that's when like the coach or accountability person comes into play, the expert.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Here's how we fix this X, Y, and Z.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: We need to do manual therapy.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: We need to improve your joint capsule mobility.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: We need to improve the extensibility and pliability of the major muscles that are limiting in motion overhead, which is usually the pecs and the lats.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: The pec minor can be restricting, the subscapulares can be restricting.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: We need to improve the posterior capsule mobility and the posterior cuff mobility, get your shoulder blade to rotate up better, better shoulder um upward rotation and even retraction as well, like better scapular mobility.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Then we need to activate the muscles that do that with corrective exercises.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: All right, we need to implement these corrective exercises.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Then that would be part of your warm-up.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And let's start exercising more challenging incrementally, working around the issue you have so that we can make things more strong, more strength, stronger around kind of the corrective exercises we're doing to not make things worse in the meantime.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: So, like, what can I do to make things worse?
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: That's where we come in.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: The corrective exercises is part one.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Do your homework.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Don't sleep in a weird position, stand up at work and not be in a forward head, forward shoulder posture all the time.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Avoid making things worse.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: If you play golf or tennis, whatever, just modify the intensity right now.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Would you rather consistently go through the issue and make pain worse and just irritable all the time so that you're floundering and static with your progress, or take a step, modify activity level right now, work on these things now, and then live the rest of your life pain-free.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: What would you rather have?
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Chronic floundering and staggering around and pain, or no pain for the rest of your life?
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: This is the recipe.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, you got to trust me.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Um, and then we incrementally make things more challenging with exercises and stability.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: And ultimately, what that leads to is resilience.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: I think that the physical, the recipe for physical health and longevity is physical resilience, which is like how well can your body tolerate out-of-system challenging things?
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: And it reacts well and handles it well.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: It tolerates it well and it bounces back well, versus I traveled and I carried my backpack and luggage and I put it in the overhead bin and I slept in a weird bed, sitting in an airplane for a while, came home.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Man, my freaking shoulder and my neck were killing me for like six weeks.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: I was out for like a long time.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: It wiped me out.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: That's not really very high resilience, in my opinion.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I'm not making fun of anybody, I'm just saying that's that's what I mean.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Versus the same trip coming home after like a six-week Europe trip or something, and like you backpack and luggage and airplane travel and um navigating the airport, overhead bin, new bed, slept weird, did some activities and swimming and snorkeling while you were there, did some archery, so egg workouts and stuff.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: You got back and you're like, I feel a little sore, but I'm good.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: I, you know, I'm I'm good.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Let's let's let's continue our routine next week, right?
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: That's the goal.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Is how well can you tolerate challenging physical things that may be out of system or just unforeseen?
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: How well can your body tolerate that and then bounce back and be like, no, I'm not sore.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: I'm a little bit sore, but I'm not bad.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: I got back, I bounced back quick.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: That's resilience.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: That's built with purposeful physical stress, which would be like exercise, resistance training, cardiovascular exercise.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Love that too.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Purposeful stress over a long period, incrementally over a long period of time.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: That builds tolerant, stress tolerance of your tissues and your joints and your bones and your muscles and ligaments and tendons and all those things.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And that is what I would call resilience.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: And that is what I think is the key for physical longevity, physical health longevity.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: And that's built with purposeful fitness and purposeful physical stress.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: So exercise, workouts, and fitness.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: That's where that comes from, in my opinion.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: It's a balance balanced with mobility and range of motion and warm-up and movement prep, which we talked about before.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: And then um balanced workouts and appropriately within yourself and dialing it up and dialing it back as needed and listening to your body.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Do that over six months, maybe even a year.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: You'll be a new person.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: I'm very confident with the right guidance and the right trajectory, and your shoulder pain is gonna feel you're gonna, your shoulder is gonna be the strong shoulder now, not the bad one or the hurtful one.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: And it's gonna tolerate stuff way better.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: So, how do we get there?
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: That's the course of action and what I just listed off.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: That's how you get there with accountability coach.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: That's the recipe of like how do you fix the actual problem?
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: You need insights from an expert, all right?
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: And that and the accountability coach, and if you pay for it, um you're gonna be actually like if you actually physically like make money payments towards the coach to do the thing, if it's business, uh, if it's education, uh, learning a new skill, um, pain improvements, like fixing pain, um, physical pain, like us, um, you you're way more likely of actually achieving the goal because you have skin in the game and it's meaningful.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Imagine if it was a thousand dollars an hour.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Do you think somebody's gonna show up late and not take it serious?
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: They're gonna come early with a notepad and their friends and family to be like, make sure you catch everything this person says so that we can stay on track.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Um, because I'm a lot is invested in this.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: You make it more meaningful, you have skin in the game, it's way more likely it's gonna happen.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: And I think the last point I was gonna say is um I say you have two more things.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Next thing is think the probably the most important thing, in my opinion, is focusing on the habits that lead to the outcome you're looking for versus focusing on the outcome.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Sports, psychology is super common with this.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Like, I love this.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: I wish I would have known this stuff earlier.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: If the goal is to hit a great drive, but it didn't happen, um focusing on the outcome and not the things, the controllables that you have and the habits that lead to a perfect drive every single time, you're gonna be way more inconsistent and way more frustrated if you just focus on the outcome.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes there's things that happen that you can't control.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: So then you're wrestling with things you can't control all the time.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: That's only gonna make you frustrated and it's gonna, it's gonna decrease consistency of outcomes that you're looking for in general.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: So what you can control are the controllables, and that's your habits.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: So write goals, the goals you're looking for in the course of action.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: What you're writing is the habits.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: So imagine if you saw somebody and you're like, hey, I want to work on this.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: What do you want?
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Let's write out smart goals.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Let's um work on why you want it.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Okay, here's the course of action to hit a perfect drive.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Um, when you get in the T-box, hit a perfect drive.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: And then when you get in the next T box, um, hit a perfect drive.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: And then on the next T box, hit a perfect drive.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: It's like that that's the worst advice ever.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Um, because you're just only outcome-based, right?
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: The focus is outcome.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: The focus would be on habits.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: As in like the same pre-shot routine, visualize the shot you want to do, practice in a way that you know the things you need to practice and work on, drills, and you're not worried about the outcomes of the drill.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: You're just working, you're focused on the habit of um the new movement pattern you're trying to reinforce to create, what's going to lead to if all these things combined together, this recipe eventually will lead to the consistent outcome you're looking for.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: And that's what's workouts the same thing, exercise and fitness and stuff.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: If I focus on these corrective exercises, sleeping in a non-provocative way, changing my position consistently at work, um, implement these corrective exercises and work out four days a week in a way that's not provocative for my shoulder, I'll just focus on those things.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: The outcome will be a byproduct of those habits.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: So habit forming and um the consistent actions of those habits will reinforce more momentum and that will lead to the outcome without trying, without like focusing on the outcome is what I mean.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: So habit focus on the habits and the controllables, and that is what your system and your operations are focused on.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: So write goals centered around the habits and centered around the process, not the actual outcome.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Um the the win, the win that I think I've actually kind of and I enjoy is staying consistent on the habits.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: That's the win.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Did I stay consistent on my habits this week?
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm focused on, versus that I hit the goal I'm looking for, right?
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Um, as like someone's investing, but like trying to build a business.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Like, am I a millionaire yet?
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Nope, I suck.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Well, it's like, uh, that didn't happen yet, then I'm not there yet.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Versus like, I have to focus on the things I can control that I know will lead to the million dollar business in the future, or I know will lead to the million dollar body that I'm looking for.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Eat light, eat lean, crush protein, eat enough vegetables, work out consistently, stay physically active in general, don't sleep in a weird position, get up from work postures consistently.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Um, do my corrective exercises and mobility and stretch routine stuff, and then my act, my actual physical exercise.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Um, do all that.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: And I guarantee you, I like the recipe is proven.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: It's simple, but it's hard.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: It's difficult.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Simplicity is not easy.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: It doesn't get quite the same thing.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Simplicity is the best for sure, but it can be difficult.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: So the recipe is simple, but it is hard and difficult to maintain.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Over time, what that leads to, habit consistency and focus leads to what I would call momentum.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: And that momentum is easier because you see the progress and the results and you stay in that lifestyle.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Ultimately, what that leads to is what we would call discipline.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Um, it's not like somebody's disciplined or not disciplined, it's more about like focusing on the habits they know will lead to the outcome they're looking for consistently.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Be like, well, I want to eat that, those five cookies, but like maybe I'll just have one.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And then even though I want more, um, I'll stop.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: That's definitely impulse control that improves as a muscle over time.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Um, and discipline that I've heard the best definition is um want what do you want consistently choosing what you want most more than what you want now.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: I'm hungry and I want to eat a bunch of food right now.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: I want wind, I want fast food, I want comfort food, I want a big old cheeseburger or something, right?
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Or a big burrito.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: I want that right now.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: But what I want more future-based is a lean, strong, muscular body, right?
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Uh that's what a lot of people want from what I've heard.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: And I'm in the same boat, right?
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: I want that more than what I want right now.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: And if you consistently choose that more than what you want right now, that's the best definition of discipline.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: So, did I choose what I want most this time?
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Perfect.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: That's a good habit.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: You can you can control, you absolutely can control that, right?
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Um, so making the checklist of like, did I here, what are all the habits?
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Write out a whole list of all the habits that you could do that would lead to the outcome.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Don't write the outcome yet, right?
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: But just write out all the habits that you know will lead to that.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: And if you consistently choose that most, then you would be considered as a person who is disciplined.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: And that just helps with more self-image, confidence, self-belief, and reinforces the momentum that you're looking for, which is a self-perpetuating cycle, which is cool.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: And I I love that.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: I think it's it's been really fulfilling for me and I enjoy that.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: But am I perfect?
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: By no means am I perfect.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: I'm just trying to be the type of person that would do that consistently.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: And I tell myself that too.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: I was I was advised by an expert on stuff like that, as in like um, this is the last thing I was gonna say is um tell yourself, don't talk to yourself as in like, oh, I need to work out, I need to eat better.
