- 0:12Hello Melissa prick here. Welcome to the field podcast
- 0:16today. I'm so happy to be with you.
- 0:18It's time for another empowerment session episode this
- 0:22week. I'm going to go back to the very
- 0:24beginning and I realized I haven't done this in a while.
- 0:27I mean, if you listen to the very first episode I dropped in
- 0:33July of 2021, I go into this quite a bit, but you know,
- 0:40that's been 4 1/2 years ago and I and there's been a lot of
- 0:45growth and evolution and broader thinking that has come into this
- 0:52feel framework that I have created.
- 0:55So I thought, let's go back to the beginning, the original
- 0:58creation of this field framework, these eight key
- 1:03talking points, these three key questions and how they came to
- 1:07be. I mean, you can go to the
- 1:08website bracinglayers.com on the Work with Melissa page.
- 1:12It tells my story and how I decided to do this work and why,
- 1:17but I haven't talked about the individual creation for a while.
- 1:22So for those that are new, I thought this would be a good
- 1:24time to revisit that. So that's what we're going to
- 1:27focus on today. If you've not been with me
- 1:30before, I have what's called the field framework, the talking
- 1:34points that I use here with guests on our podcast that have
- 1:39also now been utilized in a book in my online course, in
- 1:46one-on-one empowerment sessions. What I build speaking both
- 1:50workshops and keynotes around. It's become this whole broader
- 1:55use where but the original idea of it was when I went into these
- 2:02conversations, I wanted to have talking points that set apart
- 2:09these conversations from others that were having women were
- 2:13having out there. What was going to make me have a
- 2:16little bit of a different take on it that was also just
- 2:20authentic to my experience, And it turned out that it was a
- 2:26compilation of the things that I had learned since I really dug
- 2:29deep into my healing journey in the fall of 2019.
- 2:34And over that time period between starting that and almost
- 2:39two years later, a little under two years later, starting this
- 2:42podcast was this realization of what I hadn't been addressing in
- 2:48my own life. And as I was talking to other
- 2:51women, what they were also finding that they had not been
- 2:54addressing. And how do we make this into
- 2:58kind of a succinct framework to work off of, to present with, to
- 3:05build conversations off of, to build creating new healthy
- 3:11habits off of, to give us something to really guide us and
- 3:14direct this that felt relatable and tangible, that could go with
- 3:19you anywhere. And so I, you know, when I, when
- 3:23I first decided in March 2021 that I wanted to start the
- 3:26podcast, I knew it was like, OK, I want to have these
- 3:28conversations, but what do they look like?
- 3:30What are we going to honed in on?
- 3:32What's going to set us apart? And that's really where my
- 3:35daughter's journeys, my son in law's journeys, my husband's
- 3:40journey and my Co founders journeys, Valencia, San Louie
- 3:45and Abby Bikel, all of us coming together and talking about, OK,
- 3:51this is what we want to do. And by having these
- 3:54conversations, it brought to life to me.
- 3:56Oh wow. Through all of these different
- 4:00people in my circle, I'm actually applying these things.
- 4:05I've just never put them together so succinctly before.
- 4:09So it became really this. I knew I wanted to have an
- 4:13acronym that would get people's attention and I wanted that
- 4:18acronym to be words that really applied.
- 4:22And so emotions and the lack of dealing with all of our emotions
- 4:27was a big core part of my journey.
- 4:29And so feel it was pretty easy in conversations with all of
- 4:36these people I've mentioned in my circle.
- 4:37And really finally coming down to myself and Abby and Valencia
- 4:41as we started meeting in spring of 2021.
- 4:46I, I, I was able to come through with, OK, I want it to be feel,
- 4:50but what does feel stand for? And because I want us to get
- 4:55back in touch with ourselves and quit living so disassociated
- 4:59from our bodies and what they're trying to tell us.
- 5:03And we've got to give ourselves permission to feel and not
- 5:07believe the lie that there's not time for it.
- 5:11That there's only some things that are appropriate to feel.
- 5:14That we put things on the back burner because they might be
- 5:17inconvenient for others. And and that's a form of
- 5:21abandoning ourselves. So that as we talked through it
- 5:26together, we were able to come up with finding empowerment,
- 5:30embracing layers. And that was the birth of what
- 5:34are all the different pieces and parts of this.
- 5:36I'm like layers. I mean we just broke down each
- 5:39letter. I'm like, what am I trying to
- 5:40say? And I realized through these
- 5:43conversations with my family and my Co founders that we had
- 5:50already been talking a lot. And Valencia and I had a lot of
- 5:52conversations about this because I had been her mentor since 2018
- 5:58and she and I had been talking about healthy boundaries.
- 6:01Because I've learned a lot about that from my daughters and then
- 6:04really realized the importance of that even more when I got
- 6:07into my own therapy. I realized that taking care of
- 6:12ourselves, that there was this false narrative out there, that
- 6:15it was selfish, and that that's something that not only myself,
- 6:19but many other women and girls had been hearing through both
- 6:25direct and indirect cultural messages and societal messages
- 6:29ever since they were very young. And what it looks like to take
- 6:32that apart and speak. No, actually, if we fill our
- 6:36cups, everyone wins. They get a fully resourced,
- 6:39present version of us, healthy version of us with them, and so
- 6:45we're taking care of our own Wellness and showing up
- 6:47healthier for the people in our lives.
- 6:50I knew that boundaries was a part of that.
- 6:52I knew that missing the connection between mental,
- 6:56emotional and physical health have been a big part of my
- 6:59journey and how I ended up having my so-called, really not
- 7:03so-called. It was a crash and burn really
- 7:05in the fall of 2019. So I knew that had to be part of
- 7:08the discussion and through these conversations had recognized
- 7:12that, you know, I'm realizing that we as women are all going
- 7:18through this. How do we show up collectively
- 7:21and support each other and quit believing the lie that we're the
- 7:24only ones having this experience or that it's not OK to talk
- 7:27about this experience? Because I knew that the core of
- 7:30this had to be we've got to start talking about the things
- 7:34that are getting in the way of us living healthy and well.
- 7:38And that means talking about the things we've been told not to
- 7:41talk about, those hard emotions, menopause, periods, infertility,
- 7:47sexual health, financial health, pregnancy, patriarchy, misogyny.
- 7:54And then how that factored in not only to our personal
- 7:58journeys, but the other layers that come into play, our
- 8:02societal make up, where we live, our cultural narrative, our
- 8:07faith space narrative, our ethnicity narrative and race
- 8:10narrative. And how we identify all of these
- 8:15things, socio economic, all of these things add layers to our
- 8:19experience as women. And so it's like, OK, so showing
- 8:24up for first for ourselves, well, what I call
- 8:28unapologetically, no more saying you're sorry for needing to care
- 8:33for yourself, for having an opinion, for believing you
- 8:37belong in a room and have something to say.
- 8:40Starting that with ourselves. And then also extending that to
- 8:44the other women in our lives, being curious about that, how we
- 8:47can show up well for that. How can ask questions and not
- 8:51assume we already know based on our own story.
- 8:54Realizing that we all have our own unique stories and being
- 8:59willing to listen to those stories and realizing the impact
- 9:03our decisions and choices have not only on ourselves, but other
- 9:06people. And then that that realization,
- 9:09and this goes back to my daughter's again, that why in
- 9:12values piece, where is that coming from?
- 9:15Is who is that focused on? Is that focused on things we've
- 9:18learned and taken on or do we really believe that?
- 9:21Have we actually asked ourselves these questions the the
- 9:25expectations journey? Are we living out of our own?
- 9:27Are we living out of others? Are we living a life that we
- 9:31were told we were supposed to live versus the one that we
- 9:35really feel called to? Are we paying attention to
- 9:38whether we feel content or angst in our soul, in the in the
- 9:42realization of the importance of embracing those layers?
- 9:47That we no longer live in shame and judgement?
- 9:51That we no longer are pushing things aside that make us
- 9:56uncomfortable or make other people around us uncomfortable?
- 9:59That we're giving room for all of it to breathe with curiosity
- 10:04rather than judgement. Such a key component I learned
- 10:07through my therapy. And we all agreed that we we
- 10:10liked the layout of this. It gave guided conversations.
- 10:14It was, even though these talking points were going to be
- 10:18the same talking points with each guest, the realization that
- 10:21we all have our own journey. There were going to be some
- 10:24commonalities and conversations, but there were also going to be
- 10:27some unique nuances because of our different lived experiences.
- 10:31And that has borne out to be true.
- 10:33I, I, I've watched this over the years and no two conversations
- 10:38are alike. They may have commonalities.
- 10:40There may be common themes that come out of them.
- 10:43And then that gives us a clue of maybe what we need to be talking
- 10:46about more like the power of saying no period, not needing to
- 10:50over explain, not needing to apologize and leave with I'm
- 10:54sorry before we ask a question or ask to be heard or ask for
- 10:58accommodation or we need help. So there, there definitely have
- 11:03been those commonalities, but then everybody's got their own
- 11:05take. I learned something from
- 11:07everybody, but I also knew if I didn't go in with a set of
- 11:09talking points, we'd have conversations that would go on
- 11:13for hours. So I needed something to kind of
- 11:16keep me in alignment, but also that could be relatable with the
- 11:20idea of like, no one has all the perfect answers to these.
- 11:24This is just to give us a framework, a script of things
- 11:29that we can ask ourselves regularly to check in with
- 11:33ourselves to ensure we're living in alignment with ourselves.
- 11:37And then, you know, wrapping up the conversations with, OK, how
- 11:40does living out feel? Finding empowerment, embracing
- 11:43layers not only impact my relationship with myself now
- 11:47that I've taken the time to do this work with myself, but also
- 11:50how I renew it and connect with others.
- 11:52It impacts who we will and won't allow into our spaces, who we
- 11:56will and won't listen to because we know our value and we're also
- 12:01not looking to our relationships to provide our happiness.
- 12:04We know that we're responsible for that, so we're not putting
- 12:07an unnecessary burden on a relationship to provide
- 12:10something that it was never meant to provide.
- 12:13It is to add to our life and to feel like a choice that we get
- 12:18to have that, not that we need to have that or have to have
- 12:21that. And we're dependent upon that
- 12:23for us to be happy so that all that work there, that that feel
- 12:28and layers work does to come together.
- 12:32And then, you know, I always introduce guests back at the
- 12:35beginning by their character traits.
- 12:37And this came from an idea that my middle daughter gave me about
- 12:42things that she had heard. I believe story corps uses this
- 12:46and some other places. But I'm like, Oh, what a unique
- 12:49way to go into it because we are so many times we our identity is
- 12:56rooted in how much we accomplish, how, quote UN quote
- 13:00successful we are. How many, how many awards, what
- 13:04our titles are, what our roles are and we don't actually know
- 13:10who we are as a person. And so when one of those roles
- 13:12or titles goes away or we don't feel like we're meeting society
- 13:19standard of going, going and doing all the time because we're
- 13:23exhausted, we lose sense of where what our value is.
- 13:27And it's like, no, your value isn't who you are.
- 13:30Your value is that you are alive and that you are breathing, that
- 13:34you were created to bring something unique to this life
- 13:39that no one else has to offer. So who are you?
- 13:43And so introducing people at the beginning with that, and then
- 13:47naturally through the conversations, what people do
- 13:51come up and those resources are listed.
- 13:54But this is really about who we are as people and how asking
- 13:57ourselves these intentional questions regularly and inviting
- 14:02others to ask them as well informs our ability to live our
- 14:07healthiest, most aligned, authentic life.
- 14:10And then at the end, giving our listeners something to take
- 14:15away. And this is, and I'll get into
- 14:17in a moment, how this has become other things that I've created.
- 14:21But at the beginning of my thought process is what is a
- 14:24take away people can have at the end?
- 14:26And it's like, maybe they need help remembering or thinking
- 14:31about or identifying activities that nourish them and fill their
- 14:34cups. Let's have our guests share
- 14:36those. And maybe they haven't thought
- 14:39about how they want to feel in their lives over the next day,
- 14:43week, three months, six months. And so we, we asked that
- 14:46question just to give some insights and people things to
- 14:50think about as the episode wraps up.
- 14:52And so that really was the journey of us identified.
- 14:55OK, we've got some talking points here.
- 14:58We've got some things to guide these conversations.
- 15:00Know what, people are talking about different parts of these,
- 15:04but there's nobody out there talking about all of these in
- 15:07this way. And there's especially not a lot
- 15:09of people talking about this in terms of introducing yourself by
- 15:12your character traits and who you are rather than what you do.
- 15:16And so we felt good about that. And what I realized about a year
- 15:20and a half into it was this framework had so much more
- 15:24potential besides these conversations I was having.
- 15:28These could be designed into book form for people to really
- 15:32start applying them to their own lives and taking those
- 15:35highlights from what our guest said and inviting other people
- 15:39into thinking about really applying these things to
- 15:42themselves and asking themselves really intentional self
- 15:46reflection questions about each talking point.
- 15:49And then from there it was like, I can talk about this to other
- 15:53women. I can share this framework in
- 15:55speaking form and hopefully give them something to think about.
- 15:59I can introduce these concepts to them in speaking form.
- 16:02And so I started speaking and then I wrote the online course.
- 16:06And this really took into consideration all of the
- 16:09conversations and things that I continue to learn by applying
- 16:13this framework to myself and in the conversations I have and
- 16:17presenting them to others. And really giving people that
- 16:20online course that they can buy once and have for always to
- 16:24reflect on, to go back to, to revisit, to invite others into.
- 16:29And, and so all of these things. And then the one-on-one
- 16:32empowerment sessions where sometimes we just need an
- 16:35accountability partner or someone that's just a little
- 16:38removed to help us see things that we already have within us
- 16:45that we just need some help getting in touch with.
- 16:47And so that's why I'm very intentional about calling them
- 16:50empowerment sessions. I'm not a coach, I'm just here
- 16:55to help you, invite you in, to advise you, give you some
- 16:59insights into what's already in you, and then you can tap into
- 17:03it and apply it. It's so empowering to know that
- 17:06you've got it in you already, you just need some help
- 17:09accessing it. And so this, but it all was born
- 17:13out of these meetings and these discussions with my family and
- 17:18my Co founders in the spring of 2021 and my therapist of what
- 17:24have I learned? How am I applying it?
- 17:27How can I invite other women to apply it?
- 17:29And how can we bring these into these conversations that we need
- 17:32to be having about the things that get in the way of us living
- 17:37our most healthiest authentic lives?
- 17:39So that was that was the beginning point and then it has
- 17:42branched out into all of these other pieces.
- 17:45I had no idea that was going to be the case when I set these out
- 17:49in 2021. I could not have put these
- 17:52together without the help of of my Co founders at the in
- 17:56Valencia, of my daughter's, of my husband's insights, my son in
- 18:00law's insights, my therapist insights.
- 18:02These people all fed pieces into things they'd observed with me,
- 18:07things that were going through themselves, things they had
- 18:10learned. And this really helped me see.
- 18:12Wait a minute. This is actually the things that
- 18:15I'm asking myself. I've just never put it in this
- 18:17form before or I know how much it's helped me and those ones
- 18:21around me. This, I think, can be a really
- 18:23helpful way to have conversations and get other
- 18:26women thinking about this too. And as I did that, the
- 18:30realization of all the potential of the field framework really
- 18:33became clear and it has become what we offer today here at the
- 18:38Embracing Layers Network. So I hope that this give you
- 18:42some insights and some inclinations.
- 18:44I hope it sparked your curiosity.
- 18:47Go to Embracing Layers dot com to see all that we offer.
- 18:51Take a look at the PDF to get you started on some three key
- 18:53questions to start getting curious about yourself.
- 18:56They're also great icebreaker questions and to ask others and
- 19:02consider next time you meet someone, introducing yourself by
- 19:06your character traits and then asking them what are you
- 19:09passionate about? What fills your cup?
- 19:11Get to know them as a person. It's just a different lens than
- 19:15just automatically asking people what they do.
- 19:19So I hopefully found this helpful and insightful and gave
- 19:22you a little bit of a inside look and a reminder.
- 19:25If you've been with us for a while, with us all birth from
- 19:28and the thinking behind it, you are worthy, you are valuable,
- 19:34and you get to choose. Thanks so much for being with me
- 19:37today here on the Field podcast. Take good care and we'll see you
- 19:39next time.
