- 1:10Speaker 2: on the Money community today, Miss Grici over there is
- 1:14Speaker 2: going to be sharing our favorite money wins. We're going
- 1:16Speaker 2: to be helping to answer a juicy money dilemma, which
- 1:18Speaker 2: this week is all about hextet, and we're going to
- 1:21Speaker 2: be unpacking something you slid into our DMS about this week.
- 1:23Speaker 2: We're talking about when your friend pulls out of a
- 1:25Speaker 2: trip and the cost goes up. My friends, how has
- 1:28Speaker 2: your week been? Hi? Good? Good week for me? Good
- 1:32Speaker 2: to know? Beck? Yeah, good to know good busy good
- 1:34Speaker 2: busy good busy? Becau's your new job going? Are we
- 1:36Speaker 2: still loving it? Still loving it?
- 1:38Speaker 3: Always too much? I'm like, is there something I'm missing?
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, I don't lulling you into her false sense
- 1:45Speaker 2: of security must be Yeah, they might be. It's exactly
- 1:48Speaker 2: how it went for me. Ess. Have we decompressed off
- 1:52Speaker 2: the IWD high that we've been riding for the last
- 1:55Speaker 2: couple of weeks. Yeah, feeling good.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Back into routine, which is a bit sad but also
- 1:59Speaker 4: kind of nice. Like it's kind of a you know,
- 2:01Speaker 4: too sad a thing like it's sad because the travel
- 2:03Speaker 4: and sing everyone's so fun, but it's good because productivity.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Much when you can just sit down to your emails
- 2:10Speaker 2: and just like get through them and then be like, wow,
- 2:13Speaker 2: I don't have to get up and run away right now.
- 2:15Speaker 2: It's actually very liberating. I like it. I like it.
- 2:19Speaker 2: My week has been really good. So sorry what.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Oh no, I just said something silly. We are just
- 2:24Speaker 3: talking about doing laundry in your own house is nice.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Anyway, doing laundry in your own house is nice. Why
- 2:29Speaker 2: would we not be doing laundry our own house because
- 2:31Speaker 2: we've been on holiday and we've been traveling.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Because you're only gone short days. I just was like,
- 2:35Speaker 4: that's the problem when I get home.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I bent all mine up. Actually it's a good point.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I do only do laundry in my own house. And
- 2:43Speaker 2: you guys actually worked from my house earlier this week
- 2:45Speaker 2: and I think everyone that walked in the front door
- 2:47Speaker 2: was like, wow, it smells like laundry in here, because
- 2:50Speaker 2: like I had just done heaps of loads of laundry,
- 2:52Speaker 2: and I was like, yeah, because they banked it all
- 2:53Speaker 2: up from travel. So sorry, sorry, but miss JESSI I
- 2:59Speaker 2: want to know what are you going to be sharing
- 3:01Speaker 2: with us this week? What are our community money wins?
- 3:04Speaker 2: All right?
- 3:04Speaker 4: I'm actually going to start off this week with a
- 3:06Speaker 4: money loss which came from Lauren. But it's a good
- 3:08Speaker 4: reminder for everybody because she said money loss. My doctor
- 3:11Speaker 4: didn't tell me I could go to a bulk billing
- 3:13Speaker 4: MRI clinic and sent me to one where I had
- 3:15Speaker 4: to pay had to pay two hundred and seventy dollars
- 3:17Speaker 4: each time for two MRIs. I'm now in a whole
- 3:20Speaker 4: heap of medical fees my fracture hand. Many tears have
- 3:22Speaker 4: been shared, Lauren. I hope you're feeling okay. I hope
- 3:25Speaker 4: your week got better. But also I had to book
- 3:27Speaker 4: a doctor's appointment this week just to pick up a
- 3:29Speaker 4: new medication. And my normal doctor no longer bulk bills.
- 3:33Speaker 4: I've heard that, and I've got on and I checked,
- 3:35Speaker 4: and I've heard it's a pretty widespread thing. A lot
- 3:37Speaker 4: of local gps are shifting to normal billing, not bulk billings.
- 3:42Speaker 4: You're going to go in check or use the hot
- 3:44Speaker 4: dog app because it tells you whether they're bulk built
- 3:47Speaker 4: or not.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Hot doc apps grow. It's so yady.
- 3:50Speaker 4: I don't know what we did before it, but yeah,
- 3:51Speaker 4: if you're going to the doctor, I would say, don't
- 3:53Speaker 4: get stung, because I, like Lauren, got bit in the
- 3:55Speaker 4: butt unfortunately, So check your doctors. But moving on to
- 4:00Speaker 4: a money win this week, I have one from Alexandra
- 4:02Speaker 4: who said I went to the Hunter Markets on the
- 4:04Speaker 4: weekend as a storeholder. I made seven hundred dollars on
- 4:06Speaker 4: clothes I was just throwing out nice I also managed
- 4:10Speaker 4: to score Tony Bianco sandals for ten dollars brain New.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Money Ween money Ween. We held a store that once
- 4:15Speaker 2: we did, I didn't make seven hundred bucks. Stock was
- 4:19Speaker 2: she selling? I know, if you've got any tips for Alexander,
- 4:22Speaker 2: let us know. She's like, have better outfits, Jessica. Maybe
- 4:25Speaker 2: that was exactly Stop trying to sell everybody your trash
- 4:29Speaker 2: and start partying with those Maxi dresses. Everyone keeps asking
- 4:32Speaker 2: me for this.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Next money win comes from a Laura who said I
- 4:35Speaker 4: wanted to buy the She's on the Money budget journal,
- 4:37Speaker 4: but because it was my birthday on Saturday, I ended
- 4:40Speaker 4: up getting it as a gift. Money win hard.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I love a little She's on the Money gift.
- 4:47Speaker 4: As a present. I think it's so sweet. Next, I've
- 4:50Speaker 4: got a money win from Taylor, who said money win.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I purchased a very reasonably priced secondhand reformer from my
- 4:56Speaker 4: local Coloni studio.
- 4:57Speaker 2: That's not a thing so reasonably priced reform. It's a reformer,
- 5:01Speaker 2: how clever, though I would never have even thought to
- 5:03Speaker 2: buy one. A pillartis reformer. It's like apparatus that you
- 5:06Speaker 2: know when you see like those really skinny women on
- 5:09Speaker 2: Instagram on the reformer Pilarates massage like the thing you
- 5:12Speaker 2: lay down on. Yeah, oh she thought the whole thing
- 5:16Speaker 2: she bought, like whole thing. She put a photo. It
- 5:17Speaker 2: looks real cute. Noo my god, wowow wow, oh my gosh.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I want one of those so bad. But I didn't
- 5:23Speaker 2: realize how expensive they were, and I tried to buy one.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I was looking everywhere. IL was on like eBay and Facebook,
- 5:28Speaker 2: Marketplace and gum Tree, and they were all a couple
- 5:30Speaker 2: of thousand dollars. So the massage has nabbed one cheaply
- 5:33Speaker 2: money wine, I love that for you.
- 5:35Speaker 4: And then one last money win that we shared on
- 5:37Speaker 4: Instagram this week. The Victorian Energy bonus if you're in.
- 5:40Speaker 2: VIC is back, so previously fifty dollars rus Jessica.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 4: And if you're thinking, oh I already got it, I
- 5:47Speaker 4: can't get it.
- 5:47Speaker 2: No, No, it's renewed.
- 5:49Speaker 4: It's just renewed, so even if you compared your energy
- 5:51Speaker 4: bill previously, you can jump on the website and we'll
- 5:54Speaker 4: have it linked in the show notes. Or I think
- 5:55Speaker 4: we popped on as stories this week and get yourself
- 5:57Speaker 4: a free two hundred and fifty bucks because why not week.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Don't say we don't do anything for you. With She'ese
- 6:03Speaker 2: on the Money, You're welcome. All right, guys, we're going
- 6:06Speaker 2: to go to a really quick break. But on the
- 6:07Speaker 2: flip side, we're going to be talking about hex stet
- 6:10Speaker 2: and we're also unpacking what happens when your friend pulls
- 6:13Speaker 2: out of a trip but you've already paid and now
- 6:14Speaker 2: it's going to cost you more. Don't go anywhere. Welcome back, everybody.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Should we jump arriety into this week's money dilemma because
- 6:27Speaker 4: I feel like we're gonna have a lot to say.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I'm ready leg go. Hi there. Have you got a
- 6:33Speaker 2: money dilemma you just can't solve? The She's on the
- 6:35Speaker 2: Money team is here to help. Every week we tackle
- 6:38Speaker 2: your dilemmas, both big and small, to answer your most
- 6:41Speaker 2: burning money, career and life questions. To get involved, simply
- 6:45Speaker 2: head to our website and leave us a short voice
- 6:47Speaker 2: recording and you might just find yourself on the show. Now,
- 6:50Speaker 2: let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Heyving and team, I just have a question about HEX.
- 6:58Speaker 5: I currently around twenty thousand dollars in my HEX debt
- 7:02Speaker 5: at my current job. I have been working there for
- 7:05Speaker 5: about two years now, and obviously with every paycheck I get,
- 7:09Speaker 5: I get a little bit less, and that is going
- 7:11Speaker 5: towards paying my HEX off. I have noticed, though, recently,
- 7:15Speaker 5: that my job has only made one repayment on my
- 7:19Speaker 5: HEX and it's only been for about one thousand dollars,
- 7:22Speaker 5: which doesn't really add up with the amount of money
- 7:25Speaker 5: that's been coming out of my pay packet because of that,
- 7:28Speaker 5: So I wanted to know how often should our employers
- 7:31Speaker 5: be making these repayments and what can we do about
- 7:34Speaker 5: it if they're not.
- 7:35Speaker 3: I don't have any advice for this one, obviously. Okay,
- 7:38Speaker 3: I know that's not shocking, but that is a really
- 7:40Speaker 3: good question. I do wonder that myself. Is the interest,
- 7:44Speaker 3: like is the interest on HEX indexation?
- 7:46Speaker 2: There's indexations I'm paying interest, which, yeah, Jess, carry on.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I'll let you you take the reins on this one,
- 7:52Speaker 2: because I know you know.
- 7:54Speaker 4: So indexation is adjusted for inflation every year, if I am,
- 7:58Speaker 4: is it that correct?
- 7:59Speaker 2: Victoria after far? Yes, yes, this is great. It's an
- 8:01Speaker 2: average of the previous two financial years, so you're not
- 8:04Speaker 2: going to get slammed with this year's inflation rate. But
- 8:08Speaker 2: obviously it's going to be high because this year's inflation
- 8:10Speaker 2: rate was relatively high. It will be an average of
- 8:12Speaker 2: the last two financial years.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Yeah, So saying that this year indexational grapple. And we
- 8:16Speaker 4: had question a few weeks ago from someone, if I
- 8:18Speaker 4: remember correctly, asking about if they should look at paying
- 8:20Speaker 4: that back because indexation is jumping quite a bit this year.
- 8:24Speaker 4: But that's all we're asking. We're asking how often should
- 8:26Speaker 4: we contributing? And I actually don't know the answer to that. VD.
- 8:29Speaker 2: So your employer is actually going to withhold additional amounts
- 8:32Speaker 2: from each of your pay period and then send that
- 8:35Speaker 2: full amount to the ATO, So obviously I don't know
- 8:38Speaker 2: what you're earning. That context would have helped. Obviously it's
- 8:41Speaker 2: going to be in line with your income as to
- 8:43Speaker 2: how much you're paying back each year. But a thousand
- 8:46Speaker 2: dollars does not sound correct in any circumstance. So I'm
- 8:49Speaker 2: assuming that they haven't done that. There could be a
- 8:51Speaker 2: couple of reasons for this. So as an employer, I
- 8:55Speaker 2: pay back HEX every time I do tax, and I
- 8:57Speaker 2: do tax four times a year. I do my business
- 9:00Speaker 2: tax whenever I get my best statement, which was my
- 9:03Speaker 2: business activity statement, and that's just a way for small
- 9:06Speaker 2: business owners or even just normal business owners to keep
- 9:09Speaker 2: up with making sure that you know, come June thirty,
- 9:13Speaker 2: I don't get lumped with every single dollar of tax
- 9:15Speaker 2: that I was meant to pay for that twelve month period.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Like that does not sound sexy. So I do it
- 9:19Speaker 2: every three months. So I make sure that your souper
- 9:21Speaker 2: is done quarterly, and I make sure that you know
- 9:23Speaker 2: everything is up to date and squeaky clean. But I
- 9:27Speaker 2: pay on a monthly basis, So I take it out
- 9:29Speaker 2: of your pages every single month and withhold it and
- 9:32Speaker 2: then pay it in a quarterly amount because that's just
- 9:34Speaker 2: when I log in and do that process. In saying
- 9:38Speaker 2: that there are some employers who might do that on
- 9:41Speaker 2: a weekly basis, because you can do that on a
- 9:43Speaker 2: weekly basis, I just don't like admins light put it
- 9:45Speaker 2: off at the end of the day. It's going to
- 9:49Speaker 2: you know, depend on the employer. But obviously at the
- 9:52Speaker 2: end of each pay period or financial year, they should
- 9:56Speaker 2: have sent the full amount to your HEX to make
- 9:58Speaker 2: sure it is being paid off. So what happens then
- 10:02Speaker 2: is the ATO is going to calculate your help or
- 10:04Speaker 2: HEX repayments when you lodd your tax return to make
- 10:07Speaker 2: sure that everything's lining up, because what could have happened
- 10:10Speaker 2: is you got a higher paying job halfway through the years,
- 10:12Speaker 2: so your help repayments were higher and therefore you know
- 10:15Speaker 2: there might be a difference there, or maybe you forgot
- 10:18Speaker 2: to tell your new employer that you even had a
- 10:20Speaker 2: help repayment and you're in a bit of a pickle
- 10:22Speaker 2: and have to pay back a bit more. So they're
- 10:24Speaker 2: just making sure that all the boxes are ticked and
- 10:26Speaker 2: everything has been done correctly. Obviously, if it turns out
- 10:30Speaker 2: that your employers withheld too much, you might get a refund,
- 10:33Speaker 2: which could be really sexy. And obviously if they've not
- 10:35Speaker 2: paid enough, you might need to actually pay and that
- 10:37Speaker 2: might be a liability for you. But essentially, you doing
- 10:40Speaker 2: your tax return is going to tell you whether your
- 10:42Speaker 2: employer paid that or not. So it's not just like
- 10:45Speaker 2: a voluntary thing. It's obviously necessary and you're going to
- 10:48Speaker 2: find out when you do your tax return because your
- 10:50Speaker 2: help slash hex's debt is related to the ATO and
- 10:54Speaker 2: completely connected, so they'll be able to tell you. So
- 10:57Speaker 2: if you're worried that your employer hasn't done this, I
- 11:00Speaker 2: wouldn't go full gung ho to begin with, I would
- 11:02Speaker 2: actually contact the ATO and ask about it. I would
- 11:05Speaker 2: log into my portal on the MyGov website first have
- 11:08Speaker 2: a look at it. If that's not making sense, I
- 11:10Speaker 2: would then literally call the ATO. They're super friendly there,
- 11:13Speaker 2: I promise, and they will help you, and they will
- 11:15Speaker 2: go all right, no worries, Let's have a look at
- 11:18Speaker 2: what should have been paid versus what we have currently
- 11:21Speaker 2: withheld for it to be processed. But the best way
- 11:24Speaker 2: to find that out is if you do tax return basically,
- 11:27Speaker 2: and then at that point, if your employer isn't actually
- 11:31Speaker 2: paying the right amount or there's been stuff that has
- 11:33Speaker 2: been missed, that's when you would talk to your employer.
- 11:36Speaker 2: If the business is bigger, I would talk directly to
- 11:38Speaker 2: payroll and be like, what the heck is going on?
- 11:41Speaker 2: Obviously it's less and this is not a good thing,
- 11:44Speaker 2: but it's less of an issue the bigger the company.
- 11:47Speaker 2: So obviously the bigger the company, the more clean the
- 11:50Speaker 2: processes are usually going to be. And if your HEX
- 11:52Speaker 2: repayments have been missed, it's usually just like literally a
- 11:56Speaker 2: processing slash admin error and they'll probably fix it up
- 12:00Speaker 2: quick smart. If your employer is a little bit of
- 12:02Speaker 2: a cheeky rabbit and not doing the right thing, and
- 12:05Speaker 2: they're a small business. That might be a harder conversation
- 12:07Speaker 2: to be had, but know you're worth and follow it.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I think we don't need to be aggressive in these circumstances.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Just hey, you haven't paid me this. It needs to
- 12:16Speaker 2: be fixed. Otherwise I'll take it up with the ATO.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Could it be possible that it looks like that amount
- 12:22Speaker 3: or you know, what you think should have been paid
- 12:24Speaker 3: hasn't been paid simply because of that indexation thing, so
- 12:27Speaker 3: it looks like only a thousand dollars been paid.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Potentially, like if she's looking at like the total amount
- 12:32Speaker 4: on your hex statement, Like if you go into your
- 12:35Speaker 4: Mygove portal and click on your hex statement, it will
- 12:38Speaker 4: tell you what payments have been made and what indexation
- 12:40Speaker 4: has been implied in separate line items, so it will
- 12:43Speaker 4: be really broken down.
- 12:44Speaker 2: It will be very clear for you to be able
- 12:46Speaker 2: to see as somebody who has a ridiculous hex step.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Still I look at that and it makes me angry.
- 12:51Speaker 2: So I do know that that document quite well. But
- 12:54Speaker 2: also it might just be because your tax hasn't been
- 12:57Speaker 2: lodged yet and it hasn't all been reconciled. So that's
- 12:59Speaker 2: why I'm saying, just check first, because you don't want
- 13:01Speaker 2: to accuse your employer of not paying it when maybe
- 13:04Speaker 2: they have, because that could especially if they're a small business,
- 13:06Speaker 2: it could just be really awkward. Like I mean, Jess,
- 13:09Speaker 2: I'd find it really awkward if you're like the you
- 13:11Speaker 2: haven't paid this, and I'd be like, oh my gosh,
- 13:12Speaker 2: I definitely have let me go fix this. Yeah, Like,
- 13:14Speaker 2: I'm not saying that obviously i'd tackle that head on,
- 13:17Speaker 2: but I think it's one of those things where I'd
- 13:19Speaker 2: be really upset if there was a lack of trust.
- 13:22Speaker 2: And I'm not saying that that should ever come into play.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I'm just saying, like, approach these things with a level
- 13:27Speaker 2: of caution just because you don't want to get someone offside,
- 13:30Speaker 2: because by saying that, you're kind of saying I don't
- 13:33Speaker 2: really trust this process. Please fix but dott all your
- 13:36Speaker 2: eyes and cross all UT's beforehand to make sure it
- 13:38Speaker 2: hasn't been paid before you go all right, you haven't
- 13:41Speaker 2: paid my hex, and I can go, heck, what has happened.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Maybe I've forgotten to do it, or maybe I've taken
- 13:46Speaker 2: it out of the wrong account. Maybe it hasn't been
- 13:47Speaker 2: processed yet, and it can be an open honest conversation.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I think approaching these things as though it should be
- 13:53Speaker 2: an open honest conversation. Like if I just said to you, hey, Beck,
- 13:56Speaker 2: my hex hasn't been paid, can we just fix that?
- 13:59Speaker 2: It's not so much. I was just wondering, No, no,
- 14:01Speaker 2: my hex hasn't been paid. It needs to be paid. Yeah,
- 14:04Speaker 2: Like at the end of the day, it's just a
- 14:05Speaker 2: very pragmatic conversation. We don't need to make this emotional.
- 14:09Speaker 2: So that's where I would be going.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Yeah, speaking of open honest conversations, this week, someone's let
- 14:14Speaker 4: into our DMS about a topic that I feel like
- 14:17Speaker 4: requires exactly that.
- 14:18Speaker 2: What did they say? You're right, Jess. We had a
- 14:21Speaker 2: very interesting community dilemma because I feel like this could
- 14:24Speaker 2: cause a few arguments in friendship grips. So did our
- 14:27Speaker 2: DM set hello, this is for the community DM. My
- 14:30Speaker 2: friends and I have planned a trip to Bali. We
- 14:33Speaker 2: paid for everything and it was all locked and loaded
- 14:35Speaker 2: until one of my friends said she can't make the
- 14:38Speaker 2: trip anymore because of work. She pulled out and it's
- 14:41Speaker 2: going to cost us around three hundred dollars extra each
- 14:44Speaker 2: and we just don't think we should have to foot
- 14:46Speaker 2: her bill after she's agreed. Her argument is that we're
- 14:49Speaker 2: the ones going and she isn't, so it's not fair
- 14:51Speaker 2: for her to pay. Not sure how to approach it
- 14:54Speaker 2: or frame it for her in a way that she's
- 14:56Speaker 2: going to understand. Awkward, that is awkward, no chance.
- 15:02Speaker 3: If I've done that before, I've pulled out of a
- 15:04Speaker 3: trip last minute, I just I'm sorry. That's not my
- 15:06Speaker 3: money anymore.
- 15:07Speaker 4: That's gone into the petty couple loss. Like I feel
- 15:11Speaker 4: like in this situation, and I've been that person too.
- 15:13Speaker 4: I did it last year when we went to Europe.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I had like a little weekend away booked and then
- 15:17Speaker 4: you're like, do you want to go to Europe?
- 15:18Speaker 2: And I was like, yes, I would like to go
- 15:19Speaker 2: to Europe. So obviously, like I didn't know that happened.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Sorry for putting you in that situation.
- 15:24Speaker 4: But no, it's so fine, and it's a group of
- 15:25Speaker 4: friends that we go away with pretty regularly, so I
- 15:27Speaker 4: didn't feel bad.
- 15:28Speaker 2: It wasn't black guy, Now I feel bad.
- 15:30Speaker 4: No, No, it wasn't like a one year thing that
- 15:32Speaker 4: I like bailed on because then I would feel bad.
- 15:34Speaker 4: But in that situation, I literally said, oh, I can't
- 15:36Speaker 4: make it, and that was the end of the conversation
- 15:38Speaker 4: because from my perspective, if I pull my money out,
- 15:42Speaker 4: you've accommodated for me within that group. Like the accommodation,
- 15:45Speaker 4: you've accounted for ten people so instead of nine people,
- 15:49Speaker 4: and you've if you've pre booked activities. I don't see
- 15:53Speaker 4: the reason that somebody else should wear change of mind.
- 15:57Speaker 4: And I know that it's more complex if maybe you've
- 15:59Speaker 4: pulled out because you're sick and you don't want to
- 16:00Speaker 4: get other people or whatever, but.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I'm sorry, that's still that's still a cost, like as
- 16:04Speaker 2: an offunable booking. From my perspective, I don't mean to
- 16:07Speaker 2: be rude, but like it's the risky tech pay to
- 16:10Speaker 2: play baby totally and like you know, if if someone
- 16:13Speaker 2: else is like, hey, i'll take your place and I'll
- 16:15Speaker 2: pay you for it, oh yeah, but if not, then unfortunately,
- 16:19Speaker 2: it's just yeah, there's going to be a bed there
- 16:20Speaker 2: that was allocated to you have to soak that up. Like, yeah,
- 16:24Speaker 2: we've done group trips before, and I'm sure you guys
- 16:26Speaker 2: have done it where everyone kind of has this chat
- 16:28Speaker 2: we all want to go on a group trip. You know,
- 16:30Speaker 2: there's ten of us going, so we find a place
- 16:33Speaker 2: that's within our budget because we know, all right, well
- 16:35Speaker 2: Beck said that she reckons two hundred bucks for accommodation
- 16:38Speaker 2: for the weekndle it's you know, times that by the
- 16:40Speaker 2: ten people that are there. If you've set your budgets
- 16:43Speaker 2: and you've you know, communicated with your friends like this
- 16:46Speaker 2: is what this is, and you know you've all agreed, ye,
- 16:48Speaker 2: for me to then say, oh well, I don't want
- 16:50Speaker 2: to come, My two hundred dollars for the weekend should
- 16:53Speaker 2: be divided and you know, soaked out by the rest
- 16:55Speaker 2: of you. Absolutely not, Like, if you've committed to taking that,
- 17:00Speaker 2: you've committed to that expense and if you think you're
- 17:03Speaker 2: going to pull out, why are you committing to that
- 17:04Speaker 2: trip and lulling people into the false sense of security
- 17:07Speaker 2: that they're going to have a cheaper trip than they
- 17:09Speaker 2: actually are. That's not fair.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Like from my perspective, it's just an inability to take
- 17:14Speaker 4: I think responsibility for yourself and your choices, or you'll
- 17:17Speaker 4: and again obviously like being sick for example, maybe not
- 17:20Speaker 4: a choice. However, you know, if you book something really
- 17:23Speaker 4: far in advance, you know that there's a risk of
- 17:25Speaker 4: that happening. That's why you have insurance if you're traveling
- 17:28Speaker 4: and things like that. But I think you can't expect
- 17:31Speaker 4: other people to be responsible for your issues or your problems,
- 17:36Speaker 4: or your choices or whatever, like whatever comes up, that's
- 17:38Speaker 4: a you problem, Like I don't think it's reasonable, and
- 17:41Speaker 4: you don't know the circumstances that everyone else is in,
- 17:43Speaker 4: Like maybe they've really stretched their budget to go on this.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Holiday to Bali, which lots of people do. Ah.
- 17:49Speaker 4: I used to literally come home with like seventies sens
- 17:51Speaker 4: in my bank account when ice like, I've definitely been there.
- 17:54Speaker 4: And so if you had said to me if I
- 17:56Speaker 4: was in that situation a week before, you like, you're
- 17:58Speaker 4: gonna have to cough up an extra to go a
- 18:00Speaker 4: few bucks.
- 18:00Speaker 2: I would have been like, I do not have that.
- 18:02Speaker 2: You literally do not have the dollars to give you,
- 18:05Speaker 2: you know, and it's not fair, Like I don't think
- 18:07Speaker 2: that you should become a financial burden on other people,
- 18:11Speaker 2: Like it is not other people's responsibility to carry you.
- 18:14Speaker 2: So I'm pretty cut and dry with that because I
- 18:16Speaker 2: have been stung by that before. I've had those arguments
- 18:18Speaker 2: where it's like, well, if you're not coming, either replace
- 18:21Speaker 2: yourself or pay for it. And I feel like there
- 18:25Speaker 2: are also circumstances where it's like it's not appropriate to
- 18:28Speaker 2: replace yourself either. So like there might be like a
- 18:30Speaker 2: couple's trip and you know, Jess, I've invited you and
- 18:33Speaker 2: your partner and my partner and I going away and
- 18:35Speaker 2: there's another couple and we've all agreed that we're comfortable
- 18:37Speaker 2: with that. I don't want you to turn around and
- 18:39Speaker 2: be like, all right, well, I'll find another couple that
- 18:41Speaker 2: I know that can pay for this and go on
- 18:43Speaker 2: a holiday with you guys that we don't know. Like that,
- 18:47Speaker 2: to me, it's not an appropriate compromise. Like I think
- 18:51Speaker 2: that that's just you're going to get slapped with that
- 18:53Speaker 2: cost because I booked a house with three bedrooms and
- 18:56Speaker 2: one of those, regardless of whether you're there or not,
- 18:58Speaker 2: is going to be allocated to you, whether you sleep
- 19:01Speaker 2: in that bed or not. So I just I think
- 19:04Speaker 2: it's a really awkward conversation to have. And I think
- 19:07Speaker 2: that this is such an issue that I think it
- 19:10Speaker 2: happened a lot when I was younger, Right, I think
- 19:12Speaker 2: now that most of my friends are a little bit
- 19:14Speaker 2: more financially secure and maybe a little bit more mature
- 19:18Speaker 2: about these things. They are like, I can't imagine that happening. Yeah,
- 19:22Speaker 2: but I remember when I was like in my twenties
- 19:24Speaker 2: and we're traveling and like, you know, doing the Bali
- 19:27Speaker 2: thing or going away for girls' weekends, and then someone
- 19:30Speaker 2: will drop out because they've got a shift at work
- 19:31Speaker 2: or something, and being like, oh, well, no, beg you,
- 19:34Speaker 2: actually you should be paying for that, and they're like, nah,
- 19:36Speaker 2: I've got to go to work. Like that's not like, oh,
- 19:38Speaker 2: I do not miss the drama of being in my
- 19:40Speaker 2: early twenties.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Yeah, acknowledging that it sucks being the person sometimes, Like
- 19:45Speaker 4: I'm sure that if this person's got a job, they're
- 19:47Speaker 4: probably bummed out.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Or if you've gotten sick and you can't got to
- 19:50Speaker 2: pay for something I can't use. I get it, totally
- 19:52Speaker 2: get that that sucks.
- 19:53Speaker 4: But I'm interested to know what everyone else thought, because
- 19:55Speaker 4: it feels like we're all on the same page.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I just think that if you're going to book a
- 19:59Speaker 2: trip with girl friends or a trip with any other people,
- 20:02Speaker 2: you need to have the mindset of this. If I
- 20:04Speaker 2: pay it is a non refundable trip, regardless of what
- 20:07Speaker 2: the booking says, it's non refundable because all your friends
- 20:11Speaker 2: are still going, and that's just not fair totally. We
- 20:14Speaker 2: did ask some exploratory questions, jess So we said, have
- 20:17Speaker 2: you ever had a friend pull out of a holiday
- 20:19Speaker 2: last minute? Thirty six percent of you said yes, lower
- 20:23Speaker 2: than I thought. To be honest, really, I kind of
- 20:25Speaker 2: thought it would be like almost fifty to fifty. So
- 20:28Speaker 2: someone said, if yes, did this impact the cost of
- 20:31Speaker 2: the holiday you're having? Sixty seven percent said yes, they
- 20:35Speaker 2: had to absorb the cost. Yeah, I'm not surprised. I'm
- 20:38Speaker 2: just mad about it.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I know.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Someone said, did you pay the difference or did they?
- 20:43Speaker 2: Fifty one percent said yeah, we had to make up
- 20:45Speaker 2: the difference. Forty nine percent Nope, the person who pulled
- 20:47Speaker 2: out paid the extra. Yeah, the heck. And then when
- 20:51Speaker 2: we asked for your two cents. A lot of people obviously,
- 20:54Speaker 2: I'm not surprised that this happened, as that happens every week.
- 20:57Speaker 2: They agreed with our point of view. Jessica's almost like
- 21:00Speaker 2: our community. But also people were like, oh my gosh,
- 21:03Speaker 2: this is such a tough one. Both sides are valid
- 21:05Speaker 2: can't wait to hear the consensus on the pod. You're welcome, Yes, indeed,
- 21:09Speaker 2: you're enjoyed. Someone said I'd feel so uncomfortable asking a
- 21:12Speaker 2: friend to pay for a holiday they can't attend, which
- 21:15Speaker 2: I think is a flip side, Like I get.
- 21:17Speaker 3: That, I get it, I get it, But if it's
- 21:19Speaker 3: everything's being booked already, then they're not going out of
- 21:22Speaker 3: their way to pay for something that they can't attend.
- 21:25Speaker 3: It's more like everyone paid. I'm assuming everything's being paid
- 21:28Speaker 3: for and they kind of want their money back. Is
- 21:31Speaker 3: that what's happening?
- 21:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so.
- 21:33Speaker 4: I feel like it really filters into the reason that
- 21:37Speaker 4: they're not going as well. So like if your friend
- 21:39Speaker 4: had said, oh my gosh, I've just found out that
- 21:42Speaker 4: I've been made redundant I have no job. Yeah, I
- 21:44Speaker 4: feel like in that circumstance you probably would be more
- 21:47Speaker 4: open to having the conversation. Were like, okay, we get it.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Like being empathetic, I can understand and be more inclined.
- 21:53Speaker 2: To absorb the cost.
- 21:54Speaker 4: But I think if in this situation, I'm really sorry,
- 21:56Speaker 4: I can't go at clashes. I've just got a new job.
- 21:59Speaker 4: You're applying for jobs knowing that you had that coming up,
- 22:02Speaker 4: and it's either a conversation that maybe you could have
- 22:04Speaker 4: had with you and your employer, like can I start afterwards?
- 22:07Speaker 2: It's not really something that I think is reasonable to
- 22:10Speaker 2: put back on. I just I couldn't agree. More like,
- 22:14Speaker 2: the general consensus for me is you should not be
- 22:17Speaker 2: somebody else's financial burden. Like that's from me, and a
- 22:21Speaker 2: few other people said, Look, it depends how far in
- 22:23Speaker 2: advance the trip was booked. Can they find a replacement
- 22:26Speaker 2: or is it too late. If it's too late, they
- 22:28Speaker 2: have to pay, which we obviously have just touched on.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Someone said, it makes me so frustrated as this has
- 22:33Speaker 2: happened to me. It's why I just choose to travel
- 22:35Speaker 2: alone or only with my boyfriend. Someone said, obviously, it's
- 22:39Speaker 2: completely dependent on the reason they've dropped out. Someone said,
- 22:43Speaker 2: if they knew it was non refundable, ie with the
- 22:46Speaker 2: hotel or the airline, then they have to front the
- 22:48Speaker 2: bill and then yeah, everything else was a little bit
- 22:51Speaker 2: very similar to what we said, and then someone else
- 22:53Speaker 2: said it seems pretty greedy on my friend's behalf. I
- 22:56Speaker 2: was like, oh, okay, Like I feel like that's aggressive
- 22:59Speaker 2: because I think you've touched on something, Jess. It really
- 23:01Speaker 2: depends on what it is. Like I mean, if a
- 23:04Speaker 2: parent got sick or something really popped up, I would
- 23:06Speaker 2: be like, oh my gosh, Like obviously I would prefer
- 23:09Speaker 2: not to spend this, but like I don't want my
- 23:11Speaker 2: friend to be out. I think that friendships are give
- 23:14Speaker 2: and take, like I want to support my friends where possible.
- 23:18Speaker 2: And I'm not the type of person, even though being
- 23:21Speaker 2: quite aggressive in this conversation, I would say I'm a
- 23:23Speaker 2: relatively generous person, Like I don't want other people to,
- 23:27Speaker 2: you know, be financially struggling or you know, I'm the
- 23:30Speaker 2: first to go, oh my god, well, Beck, if you
- 23:32Speaker 2: can't afford it, like I'm happy to chip in a
- 23:34Speaker 2: little bit more. That's showing my privilege. But at the
- 23:37Speaker 2: same time, if I didn't have that amount of money,
- 23:40Speaker 2: like it would be a stress on me, and that's
- 23:41Speaker 2: not fair to expect. So I think it's one of
- 23:44Speaker 2: those things where it is really situational. I have a
- 23:47Speaker 2: hypothetical for you, right, I'm ready. So ten of us
- 23:50Speaker 2: have booked to go to Bali together.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, someone's pulled out because they've got a new job.
- 23:55Speaker 4: They've given us eight weeks. Notice the hotel, we can
- 23:59Speaker 4: still refund it. Do we go through the effort of
- 24:02Speaker 4: refunding the hotel, finding a new hotel, rebooking the hotel
- 24:07Speaker 4: based on the fact that this person can't come and
- 24:09Speaker 4: they're refusing to pay the cost? Like, would you like,
- 24:12Speaker 4: do you think it is worth with that much notice
- 24:14Speaker 4: going to that effort with that much?
- 24:16Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 24:17Speaker 2: Yeah, so I would say no. Do you know why
- 24:20Speaker 2: I'd say no? Why? Because you told me that we're
- 24:23Speaker 2: traveling in a group of ten. How much is the accommodation?
- 24:27Speaker 2: Like is it, you know, two hundred bucks? Or is
- 24:29Speaker 2: it two thousand dollars? Like? Are we staying in a
- 24:31Speaker 2: luxury filler? Because I'm assuming if we're traveling as a
- 24:34Speaker 2: group of ten, we probably had to book somewhere that
- 24:37Speaker 2: sleeps twelve to begin with. Do you know what I mean?
- 24:40Speaker 2: If you book somewhere that sleeps ten, then it's usually
- 24:43Speaker 2: like four bedrooms and then two people have to sleep
- 24:46Speaker 2: on the couch. But if you like, I'm just thinking
- 24:48Speaker 2: too much about this, I'm really sorry but saying would
- 24:51Speaker 2: you rather?
- 24:51Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 24:52Speaker 2: I hate playing would you rather? We do this? All
- 24:54Speaker 2: the time? Beck we play would you rather? When we
- 24:56Speaker 2: go to airports and we're sitting like in the lounge
- 24:58Speaker 2: waiting for our fly love that game, and Gabby always
- 25:00Speaker 2: asks the best would you rather questions? But then Jess
- 25:03Speaker 2: gets into the nitty gritty of like, well, okay, well
- 25:06Speaker 2: if I had need to have all the information, yeah,
- 25:08Speaker 2: like I need to have all the information, And if
- 25:10Speaker 2: I was going to be a dog with human hands
- 25:13Speaker 2: or a cat with a human face, like, am I pretty?
- 25:17Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 25:17Speaker 2: You really? I totally get it.
- 25:19Speaker 3: You're gonna get right into the nitty gritty of it.
- 25:21Speaker 2: She's like a decision on my hands. If I'm a
- 25:23Speaker 2: dog with human hands, are they functional? Like Cahn? I
- 25:26Speaker 2: wave like yeah, okay, anyway, I think that that's important
- 25:30Speaker 2: because am I going to go find another place? Is
- 25:33Speaker 2: the cost actually just going to be the same to
- 25:35Speaker 2: have somewhere that sleeps nine people instead of ten because
- 25:38Speaker 2: it's a group booking? Or do we book separate hotel
- 25:42Speaker 2: rooms for every single person staying, in which case it
- 25:44Speaker 2: might be worth it. But if we've booked a group
- 25:47Speaker 2: holiday and we've booked a nice villa and there's ten
- 25:49Speaker 2: beds and ones allocated to you, I don't think we
- 25:52Speaker 2: should be changing locations or if you're probably why people
- 25:56Speaker 2: don't go on holidays with me.
- 25:58Speaker 4: If you're a person who is cam, Yeah, do you
- 26:01Speaker 4: think a good way to approach the conversation if you
- 26:03Speaker 4: have this theoretical abundance of time is to say, I've
- 26:07Speaker 4: looked at the cost, I don't want to put you
- 26:08Speaker 4: guys out. Here's a potential alternative. I'm happy to do
- 26:11Speaker 4: the admin work to cancel and rod that's kind. We
- 26:14Speaker 4: think that that's maybe like a happy medium if you're
- 26:16Speaker 4: this person in a situation that we're acknowledging does suck. Absolutely,
- 26:20Speaker 4: Is that maybe a middle ground to approach it?
- 26:22Speaker 2: Absolutely, if there's a cheaper alternative and you've offered to
- 26:25Speaker 2: do the grunt work. Absolutely, Yeah, I think that that's
- 26:27Speaker 2: actually the smart thing to do, or even offered suitable alternatives. Yeah, Yeah,
- 26:33Speaker 2: that's a nice middle Like the finding of the.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Person that you were saying before, Like if you have
- 26:37Speaker 4: an activity and it's reasonable to you know, bring someone
- 26:40Speaker 4: else in, like, oh, I can't make it, but my
- 26:41Speaker 4: other friend that you're also.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Friends with, my colleague, Yeah, here's my coworker. But to
- 26:47Speaker 2: overlay that, like let's say we do that someone's yeaeded
- 26:50Speaker 2: and they're not coming on our group cheery. But at
- 26:52Speaker 2: ten it's now down to nine. You and I know
- 26:54Speaker 2: Jess that there's a spare bed, so we invite another friend.
- 26:58Speaker 2: You now under the obligation to release the first person,
- 27:02Speaker 2: I think, because you've replaced them, absolutely give We give
- 27:07Speaker 2: Beck her money away. No, no, no, they can't pay
- 27:10Speaker 2: an addition, So like you, you replace it go all right, Beck,
- 27:13Speaker 2: like you get your money back because we actually found
- 27:15Speaker 2: someone to replace you.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Ah.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Yes, But you should have been in the position, from
- 27:19Speaker 2: my perspective, to say, okay, well I'm going to pay
- 27:22Speaker 2: for this unless I'm replaced. Yes, okay, okay, but that
- 27:25Speaker 2: person who's replacing can't pay.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Is that what you're saying? No, No, they pay, they
- 27:29Speaker 3: pay you exactly. I think the person replacing pays.
- 27:31Speaker 2: They pay you. Yeah, they don't get a free ride.
- 27:33Speaker 3: No, it's like a bond transfer when you're geology.
- 27:37Speaker 2: It's a bond transfer in the share house, the temporary
- 27:41Speaker 2: share house, share house, temporary share villa. We should Bali.
- 27:46Speaker 2: I love where this is going in Bali. She's on
- 27:49Speaker 2: the money. A single who listens to this podcast for covering,
- 27:56Speaker 2: would you Balley meet and greet to make it a
- 27:59Speaker 2: tax to doc in. We could take we could pack
- 28:03Speaker 2: up all our pod stuff. Oh god, we can potcasts
- 28:05Speaker 2: from anywhere. I just I don't want to say trip
- 28:08Speaker 2: I was anyone? Does anyone that went down really well?
- 28:12Speaker 2: Just car back in the day. I'm getting can't a
- 28:16Speaker 2: makeup brand in the eye? Oh yeah, tart tr t.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I'm getting way off track.
- 28:21Speaker 4: I might not.
- 28:22Speaker 2: No, I love it if this makes it to the
- 28:24Speaker 2: cod Just no. Content this week was dire. It's a
- 28:29Speaker 2: beauty brand.
- 28:29Speaker 4: They used to do make up trips for influencers and
- 28:32Speaker 4: so that they would go and they would go to
- 28:33Speaker 4: Bali and they'd do these huge villas and they'd brand
- 28:35Speaker 4: everything and they'd be free stuff. Anyway. It was a
- 28:37Speaker 4: whole thing, okay, And then they did it again this year.
- 28:39Speaker 4: It was like the first time post COVID, and it
- 28:41Speaker 4: blew up on TikTok because there was a lot of
- 28:42Speaker 4: discourse around who was invited.
- 28:44Speaker 2: And I was like, li truly no diversity it was,
- 28:48Speaker 2: but also people not really comprehending the fact that it
- 28:51Speaker 2: was probably more affordable for them to send everyone on
- 28:53Speaker 2: this luxury trip to Dubai.
- 28:55Speaker 4: I think it was then it would be for them
- 28:56Speaker 4: to buy and add on television, for example. So it's
- 28:59Speaker 4: like a cost benefiting getting very off track, but anyway,
- 29:01Speaker 4: like we could do that, but everything's.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Also just a little bit insensitive coming out of COVID,
- 29:05Speaker 2: being like here's a big fancy influencer tree. Anyway, there's
- 29:08Speaker 2: a lot to break down about that circumstance and slip
- 29:11Speaker 2: into it. Just you guys know that's in Bali one
- 29:13Speaker 2: day soon we can they can brandon villa. She's on
- 29:16Speaker 2: the money. Do you know what, It'll probably be cheaper
- 29:19Speaker 2: to have a villa in Bali for a month that
- 29:21Speaker 2: it is to run our office in the city for
- 29:23Speaker 2: a month. So I reckon, that's a good trade off.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Let's go, let's do it. Let's do it really really
- 29:28Speaker 2: quickly to get back on track. We don't want to
- 29:30Speaker 2: us back on track. We don't want to sorry for
- 29:32Speaker 2: you guys work. We want to go to Bali. We
- 29:35Speaker 2: can do that. We can do that straight after.
- 29:37Speaker 3: So in this DM they did mention, how do I
- 29:40Speaker 3: best approach this so that the other person can understand it?
- 29:44Speaker 2: Such a good send them this episode, send them episode.
- 29:46Speaker 2: But also I would say very aggressive. They might know
- 29:50Speaker 2: you've been talking about really aggressive.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Imagine just sending this without any context. Maybe don't don't
- 29:55Speaker 3: do that. Actually, maybe just.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Like send it to them with a time stamp so
- 29:59Speaker 2: they can't see how the stuff. Yeah, only listen to
- 30:01Speaker 2: the path that's about them. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Or I would say, just kind of explain it, give
- 30:07Speaker 3: them some quick math.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Actually, maybe give.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Them too many numbers so they get a bit confused,
- 30:11Speaker 3: and just say, Okay, I'm happy to release the money,
- 30:13Speaker 3: but that.
- 30:13Speaker 2: It's not acceptable back community, not in this is the
- 30:18Speaker 2: best way to do it. He knows them.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Just explain that. You know it's you guys all took
- 30:23Speaker 3: into consideration how much you're willing to spend with that
- 30:26Speaker 3: person in mind, and you would have calculated it differently
- 30:29Speaker 3: if you knew that they were going to bail, So
- 30:31Speaker 3: you can't all afford to put out any more money
- 30:33Speaker 3: at this stage, And hopefully they understand. That's my two cents.
- 30:36Speaker 4: And a good lesson for anyone going forward if you
- 30:38Speaker 4: are booking big group trips is maybe have that conversation
- 30:41Speaker 4: up front and just say, hey, everyone, we're locking this
- 30:43Speaker 4: in if anyone's got to pull out, are we all
- 30:46Speaker 4: on the same page in regards to you bail too.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Bout. There's a whole conversation to have around that as well,
- 30:51Speaker 2: about what happens if everybody doesn't want to chip in
- 30:55Speaker 2: and then someone's put it on their credit card and
- 30:57Speaker 2: they're out. Oh my gosh. It's a whole thing. But
- 30:59Speaker 2: I think we just need to be the future. Yes,
- 31:02Speaker 2: let's do another episode about traveling to Bali, but we
- 31:05Speaker 2: do it from Bari.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Yeah, she's really, she's like hypher fixated this.
- 31:10Speaker 2: I'm going to do it. Catch me in Bali, guys,
- 31:12Speaker 2: I will see you there all right, talking about catching
- 31:14Speaker 2: me later. I think we should go. This episode has
- 31:16Speaker 2: gotten off track. I think our producer is going to
- 31:18Speaker 2: have something to say about it. But what we can
- 31:20Speaker 2: do is go to Barli so she can't catch us.
