- 0:02Speaker 1: Life audio.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Today, I'll talk about that John can't sleep unless there's
- 0:11Speaker 2: noise and tries to remember math so he can help
- 0:13Speaker 2: with his daughter's homework. Meanwhile, I almost have a heat
- 0:17Speaker 2: stroke at a stranger's house in Phoenix and reveal what
- 0:19Speaker 2: the I've fallen and can't get up. Lady was paid
- 0:22Speaker 2: for her iconic commercial performance, plus a conversation about childlike
- 0:27Speaker 2: wonder and fighting the tendency to project our own cynicism
- 0:30Speaker 2: onto God. Today's episode is not sponsored by Carrot Cake.
- 0:34Speaker 2: We found a way to make vegetables three thousand calories
- 0:37Speaker 2: per serving, but first award from our actual sponsor.
- 0:48Speaker 3: What's up Mentricktown Crew, We're here with you, Johnny and
- 0:53Speaker 3: John talk about that.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Oh back again, here we go. Man, we're in the
- 1:01Speaker 2: throes of summer, although you're back in school.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Yeah, she's been to school. Was three weeks ago? Really?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:07Speaker 1: They started really go back so new school.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I remember, uh day after Labor Day?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah, those are those were the days.
- 1:15Speaker 2: What happened to that? And that they we used to say,
- 1:18Speaker 2: were we dumber? Then?
- 1:19Speaker 1: What's going on to say?
- 1:21Speaker 3: I would like to put us up against the current generation,
- 1:24Speaker 3: and that's.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Already in the works. There's a reality show out.
- 1:27Speaker 1: There that's like, tell me I'm dumber right now than the.
- 1:30Speaker 2: But how would you do it? Because you'd have to say,
- 1:33Speaker 2: were we smarter as an eleventh grader than a current
- 1:35Speaker 2: eleventh grader? You could look at curriculums and see what
- 1:38Speaker 2: they were teaching. Then maybe I.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Want to go up against eleventh grader right now, I
- 1:41Speaker 3: don't know where they are. I think I have a
- 1:43Speaker 3: good chance.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I don't. I don't think it would go well. No, City, I.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Had a math homework. She kind of forgot about it
- 1:49Speaker 3: to the last minute. And that's a that's a moment
- 1:53Speaker 3: where I get humbled and that needs your help.
- 1:56Speaker 2: This was I'm not if you've not done it, you
- 1:57Speaker 2: get rusty, right, Yeah, all the the what is it called?
- 2:00Speaker 2: Formulas and the Yeah, this this.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Was I don't know how name what we were doing.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I kind of I remembered part of it. Yeah, there
- 2:08Speaker 3: was real complicated part. So I find like, hey, it's
- 2:11Speaker 3: gonna take me a minute to reteach myself this and
- 2:13Speaker 3: that's where Claude comes in.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Gosh, get back with Claude.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Remember, help me remember how to do this? You know
- 2:20Speaker 1: what I'm saying.
- 2:21Speaker 2: So it'll you literally asked it to help you.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Remember, well, just put the problem in, like show me
- 2:24Speaker 3: what to do in this first one, and then it
- 2:26Speaker 3: helps me.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Wow.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah I don't know, man.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I still do all the work. And after a while,
- 2:31Speaker 3: when I got the hang out, I don't need claud anymore.
- 2:33Speaker 3: See that's how you're supposed to use this stuff.
- 2:35Speaker 2: But he's there, he's still there problem stealing your data.
- 2:39Speaker 2: God saw the funniest uh. It was one of those
- 2:41Speaker 2: onion there's an onion style online news thing called hard
- 2:46Speaker 2: times dot net and they posted, you know how these
- 2:49Speaker 2: towns will elect like a dog as their mayor, these
- 2:52Speaker 2: small towns, and it said cute hometown dog mayor approves
- 2:58Speaker 2: data center. Oh, like, it's so funny. The dark side
- 3:04Speaker 2: of the dog mayor when he takes the when he
- 3:07Speaker 2: takes the dark money to put in a.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It's like dark treats.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. Yeah he did it for kibble. He's
- 3:15Speaker 2: stealing all your data for kibble.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, that's funny. That's funny.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Yes, it is summer and we're in a heat wave,
- 3:24Speaker 3: you know, like it's pretty it's intense. Every time I
- 3:27Speaker 3: walk outside, my glasses fog up. Yeah, that's how you know.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That's when you know your air conditioners on. Yeah, good too, though,
- 3:33Speaker 2: because it's like that big of a transition, I think
- 3:35Speaker 2: you're that's a little privilege you're speaking from because it
- 3:38Speaker 2: means your house is nice and cool. Well, because it's
- 3:40Speaker 2: that big of a change, you know what I'm saying.
- 3:42Speaker 2: If it was just like if you're if you have
- 3:43Speaker 2: your houset on like say seventy three, seventy four, maybe
- 3:45Speaker 2: it doesn't do that, but you're a sixty five kind
- 3:48Speaker 2: of one and three. What do you what's your what's
- 3:50Speaker 2: your thumbstat at night? Yeah?
- 3:52Speaker 1: Sixty six? Wow. Yeah, we have to sleep, buddy. Your
- 3:56Speaker 1: bill is massive? What's your bill? Uh?
- 3:59Speaker 3: In the summer, yeah, it can get pretty high. I'm
- 4:01Speaker 3: not here to I don't want to say you don't
- 4:02Speaker 3: want to say that I'm there.
- 4:04Speaker 2: It's because different regions of the country listen to us,
- 4:06Speaker 2: and they probably be like, that's nothing.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But I pay to try to sleep. That you can't
- 4:12Speaker 1: sleep if you get hot, if it's hot yet.
- 4:13Speaker 2: But I don't get hot anymore. When I lost the weight,
- 4:15Speaker 2: I'm cold natured now. I'm like a little old lady. Wow,
- 4:17Speaker 2: I don't know, I take a jack, I take a
- 4:19Speaker 2: jacket into restaurants. Now I do things.
- 4:21Speaker 1: You must used to be a bigger old lady to me,
- 4:23Speaker 1: But yes, I was a.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Big old lady. You don't see a lot of big
- 4:25Speaker 2: old ladies. That's the thing. That's the thing that maybe
- 4:27Speaker 2: that scared me straight. I noticed, Hey, you don't see
- 4:29Speaker 2: a lot of seventy pound or seventy year old You
- 4:32Speaker 2: say seventy pound. You don't see a lot of seventy
- 4:34Speaker 2: year old three hundred pound guys. You know what I mean.
- 4:36Speaker 2: They're out there, but it's not. You don't have great odds. No,
- 4:40Speaker 2: So I was like, it's time to clean it up.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I knew some people in my family that were larger
- 4:44Speaker 3: and lived into their eighties.
- 4:45Speaker 1: It really gives me great comfort.
- 4:47Speaker 2: That's good.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah.
- 4:48Speaker 2: One thing I did read about being heavy as an
- 4:51Speaker 2: older person is that they when you get osteoporosis, they
- 4:58Speaker 2: tell you do weight bearing exercise than you already are
- 5:01Speaker 2: and have fat people never get hostile porosis because you're
- 5:04Speaker 2: doing weight bearing exercise by living. Unless you get like
- 5:08Speaker 2: chair bound or bedbound, then you're yeah, maybe you could
- 5:10Speaker 2: develop it.
- 5:10Speaker 1: But so you're saying I need to gain.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Saying let's put let's pack on the past since my friend. Yes, John.
- 5:18Speaker 2: So one time I was in on a trip in Phoenix.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Well the first time was I've ever been to Phoenix.
- 5:25Speaker 2: And it was a campus thing, this campus ministry, and
- 5:28Speaker 2: it was one of those things where they go stay
- 5:31Speaker 2: with a host family. We were going to get your hotel,
- 5:33Speaker 2: but stay with it. And I'm not I'm too introverted
- 5:36Speaker 2: for that, but I did it because I didn't want
- 5:38Speaker 2: to offend these people. So now you're in this family's house. Yeah,
- 5:42Speaker 2: and I did not know the rules. And if you've
- 5:44Speaker 2: ever been to that climate before, like in Phoenix, if
- 5:47Speaker 2: you've been there, but you've never stayed with anybody. So
- 5:50Speaker 2: I go into the house. It feels a little warm.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I'm probably too eighty at this point. I go to sleep.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I wake up drenched and you're keep it on like
- 6:01Speaker 2: seventy five or something. No, I go look at the thermostat.
- 6:04Speaker 2: It's on eighty two. Come, so, I go, this is
- 6:07Speaker 2: a mistake. They must have it on a hold or something.
- 6:09Speaker 2: You know how thermostats have a hole and they lapse
- 6:11Speaker 2: and then you go, oh, it's a hold. I go,
- 6:13Speaker 2: did it did did did it? Did? Dude? I crank
- 6:15Speaker 2: it down to like seventy two. I wake up the
- 6:18Speaker 2: next day and we're at we're at breakfast. We're all
- 6:22Speaker 2: talking and everybody's just kind of clearing the road, looking around,
- 6:25Speaker 2: like what do we talk about? And then they go,
- 6:26Speaker 2: who would tie the comedians? They go, they go, Tony,
- 6:31Speaker 2: did you touch the thermostat? I go, yeah, there must
- 6:38Speaker 2: have been a holder, some psycho put it on it.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I go, it was on like eighty two and I was.
- 6:43Speaker 2: They go, if we lower our thermostat here in Phoenix
- 6:47Speaker 2: below eighty, our electric bill will be six hundred dollars.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I go what.
- 6:51Speaker 2: They go, that's why we all have pools. I go,
- 6:53Speaker 2: so you don't burst into flame? How do you sleep?
- 6:55Speaker 2: And they wait until they get hot enough that they're
- 6:57Speaker 2: about to errupt, and then they go jump in the pools.
- 6:59Speaker 2: You're like, sound ben't that wild? So I can't imagine
- 7:03Speaker 2: what their bills are now. But he goes, it would
- 7:04Speaker 2: be six hundred dollars if we if we drop it
- 7:05Speaker 2: below eighty. And we did it one one month and
- 7:07Speaker 2: it was it was a six hundred dollars.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I will tell you my bill is not six hundred dollars.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Okay, that's he can reach in the four fifty range
- 7:13Speaker 3: in a bad you know kind of thing.
- 7:15Speaker 1: But yeah, and that's a lot.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, but yeah again, I can't I have
- 7:20Speaker 3: I have a fan on my bedside table. Okay, they
- 7:22Speaker 3: have a box fan in the room of a ceiling
- 7:24Speaker 3: fan over the top of it.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Are you and you're a noisemaker guy too, right? And
- 7:28Speaker 2: like air purifier? Wow?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yeah, my buddy, don't have a noise machine on my phone.
- 7:32Speaker 2: My buddy Rick Roberts, who you know, did road comedy
- 7:36Speaker 2: in comedy clubs for twenty years and then started doing
- 7:39Speaker 2: corporates and been doing that for another ten or fifteen years.
- 7:42Speaker 2: So he's just a lifer on in hotels. And one
- 7:46Speaker 2: time we did a road trip together and him checking
- 7:48Speaker 2: in was comical to me because I just thought, we're
- 7:52Speaker 2: we're in a hotel. I still have I still felt
- 7:54Speaker 2: like a kid. Yeah, like I get to go get
- 7:55Speaker 2: paid to do jokes, and I'm here with this guy
- 7:57Speaker 2: who's grizzled from the road and he he goes they
- 8:01Speaker 2: go any preference on room, he goes, not by the elevator,
- 8:04Speaker 2: not by the ice machine, not buy any large groups.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Can you put me in the corner. He had all
- 8:08Speaker 2: this stuff and they go okay, and they're clicking or
- 8:12Speaker 2: they're clicking around and found in a room. And then
- 8:15Speaker 2: I'm like this guy. And then he had like a
- 8:17Speaker 2: duffel bag full of stuff. He had his own pillow,
- 8:19Speaker 2: he had a fan, he had a noise machine, he
- 8:23Speaker 2: had ear plugs, he had I mean, it was wild.
- 8:26Speaker 2: And I'm just like this guy. And he goes, you
- 8:29Speaker 2: don't have problems sleep, and I go, no, this was
- 8:31Speaker 2: twelve years ago. He goes, he looked at me, and
- 8:34Speaker 2: he goes, that's a gift. He goes, what you're talking
- 8:38Speaker 2: about is a gift. Oh yeah, And here I go. Whatever.
- 8:42Speaker 2: And now I mean, I have to take stuff at
- 8:44Speaker 2: night to sleep. I don't do the noise machine yet.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Now I don't bring my own pillow, but sometimes I'm
- 8:49Speaker 2: at a room and I go, I should have brought
- 8:50Speaker 2: my own pillow.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I rarely sleep with the night, and my wife can
- 8:55Speaker 3: barely ever sleep at the night. Like last night was
- 8:58Speaker 3: a big deal. I think she fell asleep about eleven
- 9:01Speaker 3: and slept till like five point thirty and that.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Was like the longest night as sleep. She's had in
- 9:07Speaker 1: three months.
- 9:08Speaker 2: She's so refreshed.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's like I can't. I mean she's
- 9:11Speaker 3: up at three all the time.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Uh yeah.
- 9:15Speaker 2: My buddy Joe Zimmerman, great comedian from New York. He
- 9:19Speaker 2: opens for Nate Simon. I met him and he has
- 9:21Speaker 2: this bit about, uh, how he started experimenting with early bedtime,
- 9:26Speaker 2: and he goes, it's tough man. He goes, it's uh.
- 9:29Speaker 2: He goes. He goes, I went to bed at nine
- 9:32Speaker 2: the other day, and he goes, nine is the gateway
- 9:35Speaker 2: to eight thirty. And he goes. You he goes, you
- 9:39Speaker 2: get to eight eight pm is the overdose of early sleep.
- 9:43Speaker 2: He goes, You wake up at three am, refreshed, Just
- 9:46Speaker 2: wander the streets with the other degenerates. Nothing's open yet.
- 9:52Speaker 2: You just you're totally refreshed at three am. But yeah,
- 9:55Speaker 2: it's such a funny thing. When you get older, you're like,
- 9:57Speaker 2: we could go to bed, ain't tell we want. When
- 9:59Speaker 2: you're a kid, you fight, you'll fight your parents because
- 10:02Speaker 2: you don't want to go to bed. That's the worst
- 10:03Speaker 2: fight you have. I don't want my mom. She was again,
- 10:07Speaker 2: my mom was just different in so many ways, but
- 10:10Speaker 2: she loved her kids so much, and she was not
- 10:12Speaker 2: She was like our friend. She would discipline us and
- 10:16Speaker 2: had expectations of us, but also she was a night owl.
- 10:20Speaker 2: So if we go, let's can we step late? She go,
- 10:22Speaker 2: get your homework done and you can we can stab late.
- 10:24Speaker 2: So I never really had like, I mean, maybe to
- 10:28Speaker 2: like sixth grade, I had like a ten pm bedtime.
- 10:31Speaker 2: But once I was in like middle school and beyond,
- 10:33Speaker 2: she would let me step to like eleven or midnight
- 10:35Speaker 2: as long as I had everything done. And one of
- 10:37Speaker 2: the things she would let me do is watch the
- 10:39Speaker 2: Tonight Show monologue. She'd let me watch Johnny Carson monologue.
- 10:43Speaker 2: And so that's how I really started curious.
- 10:45Speaker 1: And the rest is this.
- 10:46Speaker 2: The rest is yeah, And I'd go to I'd be
- 10:47Speaker 2: doing the jokes at the lunch table and stuff. But
- 10:49Speaker 2: that was because of my mom, because she didn't make
- 10:51Speaker 2: bedtime that big of a deal.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Could you get up the next morning, yeah, that was
- 10:55Speaker 1: that was the big thing.
- 10:56Speaker 2: That was the big thing. She would go, don't give
- 10:58Speaker 2: me guff when I come to wake you up at seven,
- 11:01Speaker 2: Like I don't want to hear it.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I tell Sadie all the time, I don't care if
- 11:05Speaker 3: you stay up as late as you want.
- 11:06Speaker 1: The issue is not that it's just get up the
- 11:07Speaker 1: next ride.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Are you going to be a pill? Are you gonna
- 11:09Speaker 2: be a group? Yeah?
- 11:10Speaker 1: But she has to drive an hour, so she to
- 11:13Speaker 1: be like a little before six.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Well, and you've got to be awake enough to do
- 11:16Speaker 2: all that. Yeah, if you're driving yourself. So that is
- 11:18Speaker 2: a big deal when you're a kid. Yeah, that's different.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I was a bus rider for one year, one or
- 11:23Speaker 2: two years of my childhood, and I was thinking about
- 11:26Speaker 2: the other day because our buddy Derek's Troop has that
- 11:28Speaker 2: great bit about you bus riders versus car rider. I've
- 11:30Speaker 2: seen some U car riders got soft hands. He said,
- 11:35Speaker 2: it's shaped who I am. But I did buck. We moved.
- 11:39Speaker 2: We were in like Powell, I think Powell, Tennessee, and
- 11:41Speaker 2: we lived in this little subdivision and for whatever reason,
- 11:45Speaker 2: we went to a school where they was and my
- 11:47Speaker 2: mom's like yeah, and we walked. We had to get
- 11:49Speaker 2: out of our uh and we'd walk all the way
- 11:51Speaker 2: to the end of our street and it was a
- 11:52Speaker 2: good like quarter mile to get to where the bus
- 11:54Speaker 2: stop was. And we'd wake with the other kids, and
- 11:56Speaker 2: I think she would drive us at some point because
- 11:59Speaker 2: she had radio station job third shift, so I think
- 12:02Speaker 2: she would be getting home from work, she would get
- 12:05Speaker 2: us ready for school, and then I think she would
- 12:07Speaker 2: drive us down to the end of the bus stop.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Sometimes we'd wait in the car with her, but she
- 12:11Speaker 2: didn't have time to take us all for some reason
- 12:15Speaker 2: all the time. But I remember that year, and it
- 12:18Speaker 2: was a weird year. And it's true, like all the
- 12:19Speaker 2: kids were on the same bus all through because it
- 12:23Speaker 2: was such a small school system for whatever that county was,
- 12:26Speaker 2: and it was a weird thing. You got like the
- 12:28Speaker 2: really gigantic ninth grader and like the.
- 12:32Speaker 3: And there's no adult on their moderating or protecting, right, Yeah,
- 12:36Speaker 3: it's very Yeah.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And no seat belts, by the way, which I don't
- 12:39Speaker 2: know how they got that.
- 12:40Speaker 1: That's just a thing.
- 12:40Speaker 2: That's just a thing they figured out it was safer
- 12:42Speaker 2: to just let them just.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 12:45Speaker 2: I'm hitting things swinging wildly. I don't know, man, speaking
- 12:49Speaker 2: of swinging wildly. Now, the uh, what we did? We
- 12:53Speaker 2: need to do an ad We need to let's take
- 12:56Speaker 2: a minute, y'all, and here from a few of our
- 12:59Speaker 2: fun sponts.
- 13:10Speaker 1: All right, So we were swinging wildly.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Yeah. So there's a guy I wanted to talk about
- 13:15Speaker 2: because you know, my scooter injury happened. I'm trying to
- 13:20Speaker 2: find it. It's this guy from Major League Baseball team
- 13:27Speaker 2: just had his contract. They're trying to avoid his contract
- 13:31Speaker 2: or something. I think because it was on my news today,
- 13:33Speaker 2: on my like ESPN news, and it said scooters or
- 13:37Speaker 2: whatever under fire today and I was like, scooters. I
- 13:40Speaker 2: thought it might have been whatever because if you remember,
- 13:43Speaker 2: remember Jay Williams played for Duke and then he got
- 13:45Speaker 2: drafted by the Bulls. He was like a big prospect.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I think he was like a top five pick, and
- 13:50Speaker 2: then he was in his rookie season maybe it was
- 13:52Speaker 2: the second year, but he had like a big scooter
- 13:54Speaker 2: like I did the Bergman, like a big like motor scooter,
- 13:58Speaker 2: like a motorcycle, and he ran it into a telephone
- 14:02Speaker 2: pole or something and broke his leg, and he broke
- 14:05Speaker 2: it in such a way that it was like it
- 14:06Speaker 2: ended his playing career. He never came back and was
- 14:08Speaker 2: quite the same. He had pins and stuff in his
- 14:10Speaker 2: leg and uh. And so they tried to like avoid
- 14:14Speaker 2: his deal, and I think that the Union came in
- 14:16Speaker 2: and protected it because guaranteed money in NBA, you know,
- 14:18Speaker 2: so it's like whatever. But I think he had some
- 14:20Speaker 2: clause it's like no dangerous behavior, and they do have
- 14:23Speaker 2: a thing that I think about. I need to look
- 14:24Speaker 2: it up because I'll get corrected. Maybe he did end
- 14:26Speaker 2: up losing some money. But you know, you can't go skydiving,
- 14:30Speaker 2: you can't go whatever, bull riding, right just because you know,
- 14:33Speaker 2: if you can.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Do anything from the Tim McGraw song.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Yes, you can't go rocky mountain climbing. You can't go
- 14:40Speaker 2: two point seven seconds.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Do not if you if you had that's what they
- 14:43Speaker 3: let his contract.
- 14:46Speaker 2: They get you in the room and they go, hey,
- 14:47Speaker 2: we were going to have you look at this long contract,
- 14:49Speaker 2: but instead we're just going to play this diamond rio.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Diamond rio. I wasn't okay anyway, they do that and
- 14:57Speaker 2: they just play that song and they go.
- 14:59Speaker 1: No, of this, You're never gonna live like a dying Yeah.
- 15:02Speaker 2: We don't. But that's the thing these athletes. They that's
- 15:07Speaker 2: why it's so hard for them to retire. They thrive
- 15:09Speaker 2: on this momentum and this adrenaline and then they go, well,
- 15:13Speaker 2: now I'm just going to be a dude, and so
- 15:15Speaker 2: they go get a motorcycle or they go get they
- 15:17Speaker 2: have a gambling addiction or whatever it is, and so
- 15:20Speaker 2: it's hard. Well, now, believe it or not, almost all
- 15:23Speaker 2: these athletes are getting these little e scooters that you see,
- 15:26Speaker 2: and that's how they zip back and forth, you know,
- 15:28Speaker 2: even if they're at the training facility. Yeah, because it's
- 15:31Speaker 2: a big facility and they're in the arena and they'll
- 15:32Speaker 2: just zip around. Well, people are getting hurt, and it
- 15:35Speaker 2: made me and so this guy can't remember his name.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I'm gonna I was trying to look him up. But
- 15:40Speaker 2: he was injured and recuperating and rehabbing the injury, but
- 15:47Speaker 2: the money's guaranteed. And then while he was rehabbing, he
- 15:50Speaker 2: gets on a scooter and exacerbates the injury or re
- 15:54Speaker 2: injured it. Now he's out the rest of the year.
- 15:55Speaker 2: He was supposed to come back. And so now the
- 15:58Speaker 2: team's trying to cry foul. The players unions to jump
- 16:00Speaker 2: in and be like, you can't you nobody told him
- 16:03Speaker 2: he couldn't have the Yeah, But now these teams are
- 16:06Speaker 2: like looking at the next collective bargain agreement, figuring out
- 16:08Speaker 2: some kind of solution where you can ban these things.
- 16:11Speaker 2: But it made me think because I was talking about
- 16:13Speaker 2: lunch today. But the the funniest thing to me is
- 16:16Speaker 2: I've tried to give my scooters away half four of them,
- 16:18Speaker 2: and I gave two away to my tour manager as
- 16:20Speaker 2: like a little tour bonus. Hey man, I got four
- 16:22Speaker 2: of these. I'm not keeping them. Here you go. He
- 16:25Speaker 2: was like, great, but I have two left and I can't.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I have friends. I'm like, do you want one of
- 16:32Speaker 2: these for your girls? And they go, well, we were
- 16:33Speaker 2: gonna take one. But after hearing that you what you did?
- 16:37Speaker 2: No way I would try, and I go, but I'm
- 16:39Speaker 2: a cautionary tale. I'm not like the example of like
- 16:42Speaker 2: if it can happen to Johnny.
- 16:43Speaker 1: His finally tuned athletes, Yeah, fell off, it's.
- 16:45Speaker 2: A specimen and he but now you hear that athletes
- 16:49Speaker 2: really are, like they throw a baseball one hundred miles
- 16:52Speaker 2: an hour and they have completely finely tuned balance of
- 16:55Speaker 2: you know, they can make their body do crazy things,
- 16:57Speaker 2: and yet they came off a scooter wrong, and now
- 16:59Speaker 2: they've porn their achilles and they can't play baseball anymore. So, yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 2: it is kind of a thing.
- 17:04Speaker 3: You've never been I think more restored to confidence. Yeah,
- 17:08Speaker 3: now you know even happened to that guy, I don't
- 17:10Speaker 3: feel bad anymore.
- 17:11Speaker 2: You know what I'm gonna do. I'm going on and
- 17:12Speaker 2: get on that scooter. It's time to get back on
- 17:14Speaker 2: that bull named food Man.
- 17:16Speaker 1: You're gonna wear a helmet this time.
- 17:18Speaker 2: That just takes away all the you know what I mean.
- 17:20Speaker 2: You want the wind in your hat.
- 17:22Speaker 1: You have the wind in your teeth.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Yeah, chise man. I don't know, but it is scary.
- 17:27Speaker 2: And just be careful out there. That's all I'm saying. Yeah,
- 17:30Speaker 2: because I think when people heard that it happened, they
- 17:31Speaker 2: were like, I felt shame, immediate shame because you're like,
- 17:34Speaker 2: this is a kid's toy. It felt like, and you're
- 17:36Speaker 2: on it and you're whatever, and it's in a big
- 17:38Speaker 2: electric machine. But you're like, still it's a kid's toy.
- 17:40Speaker 2: In she feels shame. So it almost does you go
- 17:43Speaker 2: because I would tell you know what I told some
- 17:45Speaker 2: other comics. They were like like the little jing jing hingshing, No,
- 17:48Speaker 2: it's not a stop it under your own Flintston or something. Right.
- 17:53Speaker 2: It wasn't flintstone powered. It was fully battery powered. This
- 17:56Speaker 2: was full on was I was flying. Do you know
- 17:59Speaker 2: why Fred only had three toes by the way, he
- 18:01Speaker 2: wore the other two off star in the car job.
- 18:04Speaker 2: It's not time for joke about that.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Yeah, time for that.
- 18:07Speaker 3: I think it is time though, Johnny from my segment,
- 18:10Speaker 3: Oh yeah, sure, yeah, and it's called they talked about that.
- 18:28Speaker 1: GK. Chesterton that is so great.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I think C. S. Lewis gave him credit for his
- 18:36Speaker 2: part of his conversion. Wasn't GK one of the ones
- 18:38Speaker 2: who mentored CS?
- 18:39Speaker 1: Yes, and there was a guy named George McDonald that
- 18:43Speaker 1: mentored G. K. Chesterton.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Okay, it's the big It's like the Belichick coaching Tree.
- 18:49Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. It's like, yeah, it's the
- 18:52Speaker 2: Theology coaching Tree.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:54Speaker 3: And we're doing a series on Wonder, Yeah, which is
- 18:57Speaker 3: again I'm the one that put the series together. But
- 19:00Speaker 3: like it's Andrew's wheelhouse, you know, he's he's very Yeah,
- 19:05Speaker 3: find the good and everything, you know, right, I have
- 19:07Speaker 3: to search for it. I'm in my head first before
- 19:09Speaker 3: I'm like experiencing now when I go out into nature.
- 19:12Speaker 2: That's why we need to be outside more.
- 19:13Speaker 3: It's true, is it really doesn't something I need to
- 19:16Speaker 3: see vast things that I can't you know, I can
- 19:19Speaker 3: predict what they are, but they're gonna look different every time,
- 19:22Speaker 3: you know. But from Sunday offs according to GK. And
- 19:26Speaker 3: we talked about this before, but I found the full
- 19:29Speaker 3: the full quote for this, and it says it is
- 19:32Speaker 3: possible that God says, every morning, do it again to
- 19:36Speaker 3: the sun, and every evening, do it again to the moon.
- 19:40Speaker 3: It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike.
- 19:44Speaker 3: It may be that God makes every daisy separately, but
- 19:48Speaker 3: has never got tired of making them. It may be
- 19:51Speaker 3: that He has the eternal appetite of infancy. For we
- 19:55Speaker 3: have sinned and grown old, and our father is younger
- 19:59Speaker 3: than we The repetition in nature may not be a
- 20:03Speaker 3: mere recurrence. It may be a theatrical encore.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Wow, that's good.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I'd never of I use this.
- 20:10Speaker 3: I always talk about Chesterton talking about this, but I've
- 20:13Speaker 3: never read the line we have sinned and grown old
- 20:17Speaker 3: and our father is younger than we are. And I
- 20:20Speaker 3: mean I leaned into and I went to some George
- 20:22Speaker 3: McDonald quotes as well, because he talks about some similar
- 20:24Speaker 3: things on Sunday. But like the idea one that God
- 20:29Speaker 3: has the eternal appetite of a child. In terms of wonder,
- 20:32Speaker 3: in terms of yeah, he can marvel at the things
- 20:34Speaker 3: that he makes. He has the ability to not just go, well,
- 20:37Speaker 3: I did that, so it's the big deal, but to go,
- 20:40Speaker 3: you know, that is beautiful, that is amazing.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Do it again. Not just setting it in motion.
- 20:45Speaker 3: This is where the deists would you know, say that
- 20:48Speaker 3: God just sets the earth in motion.
- 20:49Speaker 2: He built the watch, right, he was the watchmaker. He
- 20:52Speaker 2: built the watch, and all the gears. Now just go
- 20:54Speaker 2: into the thing and now it just it. He winds
- 20:58Speaker 2: the watch from time to time, but it's it's really
- 21:00Speaker 2: kind of a hands off it in motion.
- 21:02Speaker 1: And Chestertow would say, actually, there's a there's a marvel.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:07Speaker 3: He repaints a new sunrise and sunset every day of
- 21:10Speaker 3: his own artistic wonder, which again the the intricate involved
- 21:16Speaker 3: part which I think scripture supports in terms of he
- 21:18Speaker 3: knows the number of the hairs in your head, he
- 21:20Speaker 3: knows how the sparrow falls in the woods, he knows
- 21:23Speaker 3: you know, every lily right in the field. He's aware
- 21:27Speaker 3: of all these things. So there's this micro greatness of God.
- 21:31Speaker 3: This this this micro sovereignty is not just the big stuff.
- 21:35Speaker 3: It's the small stuff as well. But this idea I
- 21:40Speaker 3: think that we and this is what got me when
- 21:44Speaker 3: I see children, and that's why I went into Jesus
- 21:46Speaker 3: talking about many times Jesus talked about if you want
- 21:50Speaker 3: to come to the Kingdom of God, you have to
- 21:51Speaker 3: become like a child. You have to change and become
- 21:54Speaker 3: like a child. Because and then in another place, there chill.
- 21:58Speaker 3: This is this is what's greatness as those who come
- 22:00Speaker 3: in the faith like a child, and only not childishness,
- 22:03Speaker 3: child likeness. And I was like, I'm talked about what
- 22:07Speaker 3: are children? Children don't bring any solutions, They only bring
- 22:13Speaker 3: more problems. Where children don't bring any answers to mystery.
- 22:17Speaker 3: They only bring more questions, the incessant questions. And children
- 22:21Speaker 3: don't they don't, they don't produce or contribute in any way.
- 22:27Speaker 3: And then I read another scripture that says Jesus says,
- 22:31Speaker 3: he quotes, I think from the Old Testament that I'm
- 22:33Speaker 3: so great that I'm so grateful God that you have
- 22:36Speaker 3: hidden this wisdom from the wise of this age and
- 22:39Speaker 3: he revealed it to children. Yeah, and You're like, well,
- 22:42Speaker 3: what wisdom has he revealed to children? If they don't
- 22:45Speaker 3: know anything about anything, and the wisdom is wonder.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, the wisdom is this marveling in this they
- 22:51Speaker 1: they enjoy.
- 22:52Speaker 2: They don't know enough yet to be cynical. We think
- 22:55Speaker 2: cynicism is like being grown up. Yeah. Yeah, I'm seeing
- 22:58Speaker 2: it for what it is and you're like, no, you're
- 22:59Speaker 2: you're coloring it, You're doing something. It reminded me of that.
- 23:02Speaker 2: There's a CS. Lewis quote that's great. It says, when
- 23:05Speaker 2: I became a man, I put away childish things, including
- 23:07Speaker 2: the fear of childishness and the desire to be very
- 23:10Speaker 2: grown up.
- 23:11Speaker 1: M that's great.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and you can tell is in that quote. Yeah,
- 23:16Speaker 2: Like there's there's a little bit of like homage.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Yeah yeah.
- 23:20Speaker 3: And I was talking about how like I showed a
- 23:22Speaker 3: picture of me holding our youth Fastor's new baby in
- 23:26Speaker 3: staff meeting. Yeah, it was like, for all of the
- 23:29Speaker 3: ways I'm in my head, holding a baby does something
- 23:32Speaker 3: to me. Oh yeah, the baby does nothing but spit
- 23:35Speaker 3: up on me and poop right right.
- 23:36Speaker 1: But there is something there's.
- 23:38Speaker 3: A wonder in that that child like state, that we
- 23:42Speaker 3: experienced something of God. And that's why Jesus repeatedly pointed
- 23:45Speaker 3: us towards it. Yeah, I want you to, you know,
- 23:48Speaker 3: and I just I don't know, man, there's a.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that childish to me. I think about
- 23:53Speaker 2: when I think about childishness in my job, I think
- 23:55Speaker 2: about silliness, the ability to be because like, there's it's
- 24:00Speaker 2: comedy that I enjoy, but it's very like, Oh, I
- 24:03Speaker 2: see what you did there. It's very clever. You really
- 24:05Speaker 2: worked hard on that, and that's very clever, but it
- 24:08Speaker 2: doesn't make me laugh. Sometimes what makes me laugh is
- 24:10Speaker 2: something that's very silly. I remember watching Adam Sandler Had
- 24:13Speaker 2: to Come Back special, probably twenty twenty. I think it
- 24:17Speaker 2: was during the pandemic, might be twenty nineteen, but he
- 24:20Speaker 2: hadn't done stand up in a decade and was a
- 24:23Speaker 2: big deal in the nineties and then dsenl and movies
- 24:25Speaker 2: and all that, but then came back to stand up.
- 24:27Speaker 2: People were kind of concerned, like, here we go, is
- 24:29Speaker 2: it's going to be like rusty And it was so
- 24:32Speaker 2: juvenile and silly, and it made me laugh so hard.
- 24:36Speaker 2: It was such a refreshing, like visceral laugh watching that special.
- 24:41Speaker 2: And that's what I think I had asked Tim Hawkins
- 24:44Speaker 2: at one time touring with him, I said, what's your
- 24:45Speaker 2: favorite I meant, like, what's your favorite age audience? What's
- 24:48Speaker 2: your favorite kind of audi? You like men's conferences with
- 24:49Speaker 2: women's conferences, you like youth events like he goes, He
- 24:53Speaker 2: didn't think of that at all. He goes, I like
- 24:56Speaker 2: an audience that can be silly with me, because that
- 24:58Speaker 2: way I like him to be able to if they
- 25:00Speaker 2: laugh at something clever, great, But if they'll go silly
- 25:04Speaker 2: with you, you got him. And He's right, that's the best audience.
- 25:07Speaker 2: The audience that's not too good to like unfold their
- 25:11Speaker 2: arms and like get in there with you.
- 25:14Speaker 1: It's like that's the real stuff.
- 25:16Speaker 3: But I think I think we do think we're older
- 25:20Speaker 3: than God or like almost like I think I see
- 25:24Speaker 3: God as cynical, like God knows everything, so therefore.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Well you're painting him in your image too.
- 25:29Speaker 3: And yeah, and it's what he told Adam and Eve
- 25:31Speaker 3: was like, listen, don't do this because you're gonna have
- 25:33Speaker 3: you're gonna start aging.
- 25:35Speaker 1: And I don't age. That's the thing. I was like,
- 25:37Speaker 1: God doesn't age.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Think this through if he's eternal and there's no sin,
- 25:40Speaker 3: what causes aging to the to moving towards death if
- 25:44Speaker 3: there's no sin in God, and that's that's what I
- 25:46Speaker 3: think Chesterton, And actually I think maybe that's what George
- 25:51Speaker 3: McDonald's talks about. If he's not gonna age, like he
- 25:54Speaker 3: gets to be eternally joyful and not think about this.
- 25:59Speaker 2: This.
- 26:00Speaker 1: This is so great for.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Everyone listening because I need to hear this from myself.
- 26:03Speaker 3: He's not cynical about you. He's not looking at you
- 26:07Speaker 3: like you look at because you're right, we make it
- 26:08Speaker 3: in our own image. I question everything about me. I
- 26:13Speaker 3: question the way I come to him and whatever. And
- 26:15Speaker 3: every time he doesn't have that, he's like, here we
- 26:16Speaker 3: go again, because there's no sin in him. So when
- 26:19Speaker 3: I come to him, I can be accepted again, not
- 26:24Speaker 3: as he is, but as someone who's got the the
- 26:29Speaker 3: youthful exuberance of relationship you know when you're young. But dude,
- 26:34Speaker 3: I don't think you and I had a disagreement in
- 26:39Speaker 3: the first ten years.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I can't think of any I.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Mean since then, wow, wow, once a month, But like
- 26:46Speaker 3: you know, that's because I'm just excited that I got
- 26:49Speaker 3: this friend and we're just having fun, right, And I
- 26:51Speaker 3: think I don't have.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Fun like I should anymore.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Yes, because again, I'm aging, and I think you can
- 26:57Speaker 3: come back to this though, and God, So anyway, come
- 27:00Speaker 3: come near to the place where the wonder is, and
- 27:02Speaker 3: don't roll your eyes at it. When I'm trying to
- 27:04Speaker 3: get for myself, I don't want to roll my eyes
- 27:06Speaker 3: at what's supposed to be fun and wondrous.
- 27:09Speaker 1: So anyway, there you go.
- 27:10Speaker 2: That seems like a good segue for me to be silly.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Let's do old jokes. We call it joke about that John.
- 27:22Speaker 2: A man is standing in a park repeatedly knocking his
- 27:25Speaker 2: forehead into the trunk of a tree. A policeman comes
- 27:27Speaker 2: up to him and says, what are you doing that for.
- 27:29Speaker 2: The man says, to keep the lions away. The policeman says,
- 27:32Speaker 2: are you crazy? There aren't any lions in these parts.
- 27:34Speaker 2: The man says, you're welcome. John. Did you hear about
- 27:40Speaker 2: the two guys who were arrested for stealing a calendar?
- 27:44Speaker 2: They each got six months. I apologize that one was
- 27:49Speaker 2: that was close to it down. Joke that's got six months.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Tell that one's telling that one to say the other.
- 27:54Speaker 2: See if her eyes roll so hard that they get
- 27:56Speaker 2: stuck in the back of her head, that's when you.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Oh she do you make your daughter in? Does she
- 28:00Speaker 2: cringe at years? She doesn't think you're cool anymore. M well,
- 28:04Speaker 2: Halloween's Halloween's the last time you felt cool.
- 28:08Speaker 1: No, she doesn't think I'm cool now.
- 28:11Speaker 3: She cares about my opinion, okay, and she wants me
- 28:13Speaker 3: to like things that she likes, so I have that.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 28:16Speaker 1: She'll bring me something. She'll bring me stuff, so.
- 28:18Speaker 2: She thinks she's a little bit of a taste maker.
- 28:20Speaker 2: And she'll let me speak into her good text.
- 28:21Speaker 3: I'll be like, I don't know about that, you know, yeah, yeah,
- 28:24Speaker 3: I'll talk about this, or I'll point out something to
- 28:26Speaker 3: Michael Jackson song or whatever she's listening to. Oh yeah,
- 28:28Speaker 3: that's a good point. So she'll we interact. But no,
- 28:32Speaker 3: she doesn't think I'm cool, which is crazy because I'm wake.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Why where is she getting this happening? That's crazy. By
- 28:40Speaker 2: the way, I've got a scooter if you want to borrow.
- 28:42Speaker 2: It looks so cool out there. John two brothers are
- 28:45Speaker 2: laid off from work and go to the unemployment office.
- 28:47Speaker 2: The two of them apply for unemployment. First brothers asked
- 28:50Speaker 2: his occupation, to which he replies, I'm a panty stitcher.
- 28:54Speaker 2: I sew pantyhose for women. The clerk looks up his occupation,
- 28:58Speaker 2: finds it to be unskilled, gives the brother three hundred
- 29:01Speaker 2: dollars a week for unemployment. The clerk asked the second
- 29:03Speaker 2: brother his occupation, and he says diesel fitter. He looks up,
- 29:08Speaker 2: finds that to be skilled labor. The brother's given six
- 29:10Speaker 2: hundred dollars a week for employment. The first brother's angry
- 29:12Speaker 2: and says, it's not fair. My brother gets more money
- 29:15Speaker 2: than I do. Well, this job requires more skill, replies
- 29:19Speaker 2: the clerk, what skill? I sew the panty hose and
- 29:22Speaker 2: he holds him up and says, diesel fitter.
- 29:32Speaker 1: That's that's a perfect that's a really good, great joke.
- 29:34Speaker 2: That's great. It's one too that almost sounds like it's
- 29:38Speaker 2: gonna go dirty. And then you go, wait, wait something.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I was like, okay, and I was really trying to
- 29:43Speaker 1: find the diesel fitter. Did not see that one.
- 29:46Speaker 2: I can't believe I've never heard that one.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Honestly, I didn't know what a diesel fitter was.
- 29:49Speaker 2: I know it sounds like a real job, though, diesel fitter.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, let's do this week in history, John
- 29:55Speaker 2: we call it talk about then John. The first voice
- 30:03Speaker 2: recording was this week eighteen seventy seven, Thomas Edison, this guy.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Yeah you'll hear though, Tom, we get it, Thomas, you too,
- 30:12Speaker 2: So no, that's the thing. Every Thomas said the light
- 30:14Speaker 2: bulb was like kind of pre you know what I'm saying.
- 30:16Speaker 2: There was some there's some stuff, you know. Him and
- 30:20Speaker 2: Nikola Tesla, Oh yeah, there's a lot of this little
- 30:22Speaker 2: thing where they're like, dude, I did this five years
- 30:24Speaker 2: ago and Edison this is exactly the same. Thomas Edison
- 30:29Speaker 2: records his recitation of Mary had a little lamb, and
- 30:32Speaker 2: then there's a note. It says, note. French inventor Edward
- 30:37Speaker 2: Leon Scott de Martinville recorded sound seventeen years earlier. But
- 30:44Speaker 2: this is the wild part. His device could only record
- 30:47Speaker 2: and had no way to play back the sound until
- 30:49Speaker 2: two thousand and eight. What yeah, okay, obviously, so he
- 30:54Speaker 2: recorded the sound seventeen years earlier.
- 30:56Speaker 1: On some we didn't discover it till twousand and eight.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Well, you we discovered that it had been captured, but
- 31:00Speaker 2: it could not be played back until two thousand and eight.
- 31:02Speaker 1: But he didn't know he captured it.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Probably I don't know how he did it, because there's
- 31:06Speaker 2: some old version of pottery that has lines in it,
- 31:10Speaker 2: like a record that they've discovered that has they've captured
- 31:13Speaker 2: sound in the lines of the pottery, and you can
- 31:16Speaker 2: put a needle on it and it has things, and
- 31:18Speaker 2: that's probably.
- 31:19Speaker 1: What something voices from old time.
- 31:22Speaker 2: I don't know what the recording was. I needed I
- 31:24Speaker 2: should have done more research, but it's wild that it
- 31:26Speaker 2: was seventeen years beforehand and then it didn't even couldn't
- 31:29Speaker 2: be played, and we wild of what. I don't know
- 31:31Speaker 2: what it was. I guess we need to figure that out.
- 31:33Speaker 2: We'll we'll have to put a pin in that. But
- 31:35Speaker 2: in that funny though, it's like, wow, yeah, I recorded
- 31:38Speaker 2: I did this seventeen years before you, but you can't
- 31:40Speaker 2: we won't know.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, pretty wild. And I'm not saying D's made
- 31:45Speaker 1: that we thought failed. You know, someday, Johnny.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Someday we're gonna figure out it turns out I'm a genius.
- 31:51Speaker 2: You won't know. It'll twenty fifty two be long gone. Hopefully,
- 31:55Speaker 2: hopefully I'll be long gone by twenty fifty two. When
- 31:57Speaker 2: will that be?
- 31:59Speaker 1: Yeah, funy way, it's like I'll be.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Eighty eighty seventy.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Why would you want to be long gun by eighty?
- 32:04Speaker 2: I don't know, man, I just really want to be
- 32:06Speaker 2: running an eighty. I'm Jack Lalaine pulling a boat with
- 32:09Speaker 2: your teeth.
- 32:09Speaker 3: I'm going for a hundred, bro, are you yeah? With
- 32:12Speaker 3: my mind and body intact? That's the thing. Oh, I
- 32:15Speaker 3: want to be writing. Well, I think you're going to
- 32:18Speaker 3: be relying a lot on claw maybe a PhD. Claud
- 32:21Speaker 3: Could you Claude go get my by then there'll be
- 32:24Speaker 3: Claude robots. Fetch my claud robots in the next five years,
- 32:27Speaker 3: Claude bots.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Hey, there they go.
- 32:29Speaker 2: John. A record robbery took place this week nineteen sixty two.
- 32:33Speaker 2: A mail truck. This is the craziest part. A mail
- 32:35Speaker 2: truck in Massachusetts's robbed of one point five million dollars
- 32:38Speaker 2: in cash. This is when they were like, you know,
- 32:39Speaker 2: maybe we should put these in armored cards.
- 32:41Speaker 1: What are you doing?
- 32:41Speaker 2: Maybe they was supposedly like maybe they didn't want people
- 32:44Speaker 2: to know, and so they were like, just putting a
- 32:45Speaker 2: mail truck and we'll sneak it through. But somebody knew
- 32:48Speaker 2: one point five million in cash. Now this is sixty
- 32:51Speaker 2: two one point five million. Yeah, who knows what that'd
- 32:54Speaker 2: be worth today, we don't have the calculator out. Known
- 32:56Speaker 2: as the Great Plymouth Mail Truck Robbery, it was up
- 33:00Speaker 2: to that time, the largest cash heist of all time.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Two gunmen, dressed as police officers and brandishing guns they
- 33:05Speaker 2: must have had some on the inside, stopped a US
- 33:08Speaker 2: mail truck that was delivering one point five million in
- 33:10Speaker 2: small bills from Cape cod to the Federal Reserve Bank
- 33:13Speaker 2: in Boston, Massachusetts. They tied up the driver and guard
- 33:16Speaker 2: and drove off in the truck, stopping to drop off
- 33:18Speaker 2: money in various places. So they had a plan to
- 33:20Speaker 2: accounts stashed this money. This is the wild part. The
- 33:23Speaker 2: truck and its tied up occupants were later abandoned shortly
- 33:27Speaker 2: after the five year statute of Limitations was set to expire.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Four men and one woman were indicted for the robbery
- 33:35Speaker 2: after the sta It says shortly but no shortly before.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Shortly before the five year statue, four men and one
- 33:41Speaker 2: woman were indicted. So that's the equal opportunity heist there that. Yes,
- 33:46Speaker 2: they included they had a woman in there. One of
- 33:48Speaker 2: the defendants disappeared right before trial and was never found.
- 33:51Speaker 2: The other defendants were acquitted at the trial. The money
- 33:54Speaker 2: has never been.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Recover because they couldn't find the money they stashed it.
- 33:59Speaker 2: So they basically got away with this. It's like DV. Cooper,
- 34:03Speaker 2: but for real, because debe Cooper we think died in
- 34:04Speaker 2: the plane because he jumped out of the plane. This
- 34:07Speaker 2: really they really did get away with the perfect crime
- 34:10Speaker 2: and they didn't hurt the people. So I mean, again,
- 34:12Speaker 2: stealing is wrong. We're not trying to say stealing come wrong.
- 34:15Speaker 3: Who among us who hasn't tied up a guard here
- 34:18Speaker 3: and there.
- 34:18Speaker 2: There's been some mail trucks I've chased down when I'm
- 34:21Speaker 2: trying to get a package, I'm like, I need that passport,
- 34:23Speaker 2: I need that MacBook. Now where's that truck? Did we
- 34:26Speaker 2: have a mission strip where somebody was waiting on a
- 34:28Speaker 2: passport the day of and they were like trying to
- 34:30Speaker 2: they were they were trailing the ups truck. Boston mobster
- 34:35Speaker 2: Vincent Fat Vinnie Teresa claimed in his book My Life
- 34:40Speaker 2: in the Mafia that John red Kelly planned the robbery. Wow,
- 34:44Speaker 2: he'd do some more research on that, figure out how
- 34:45Speaker 2: they knew about the mail truck. There's all that, Yeah,
- 34:48Speaker 2: you know there's probably some only inside John. This one's
- 34:52Speaker 2: different because we're going forward this week in future. Oh,
- 34:56Speaker 2: because this week in twenty one twenty six could be
- 34:59Speaker 2: the end the world. Okay, I will be gone by that,
- 35:03Speaker 2: the Swift I don't think so. I think you're gonna
- 35:06Speaker 2: be kicking around, buddy. Your mind is going to be
- 35:08Speaker 2: downloaded into the cloud somewhere. I'll be I'll be paying robot.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Somebody's going say that he's gonna be paying like some ninety
- 35:13Speaker 2: nine dollars a month cloud storage for your consciousness, Like
- 35:17Speaker 2: she'd beize should we unsubscribe from this? I mean it
- 35:19Speaker 2: is my father, but this is ridiculous. I mean, I
- 35:22Speaker 2: gotta eat Claude.
- 35:23Speaker 1: How Dad tell me a story again?
- 35:27Speaker 4: Uh?
- 35:27Speaker 2: The Swift tuttal comet approaches Earth this week twenty one
- 35:32Speaker 2: twenty six. During its nineteen ninety two approach to Earth,
- 35:35Speaker 2: it's orbit was estimated to have a one in ten
- 35:37Speaker 2: thousand chance of colliding with Earth in the year twenty
- 35:40Speaker 2: one twenty six. If this were to occur, it would
- 35:43Speaker 2: end civilization. However, subsequent observations show that it will pass
- 35:48Speaker 2: near Earth in twenty one twenty six, but will not collide.
- 35:51Speaker 2: It is believed that this comet was observed by the
- 35:53Speaker 2: Chinese in sixty nine BC and later in one eighty
- 35:57Speaker 2: eight AD Well, so could be it's a one in
- 36:02Speaker 2: whatever chance, but not not a non zero chance.
- 36:05Speaker 1: I was setting alarm.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Now, go ahead and set an alarm for August fourteenth,
- 36:09Speaker 2: twenty one, twenty six and just you know, good luck
- 36:11Speaker 2: to us all. Yeah, and yeah, I don't know what
- 36:14Speaker 2: kind of world we're going to be living. And maybe
- 36:17Speaker 2: they'll be like just bring in.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Yeah, come on, guys, just we just get this it.
- 36:20Speaker 2: I remember bumper stickers for the twenty twenty election. There
- 36:24Speaker 2: was some that just said giant meteor twenty twenty. Amusing
- 36:31Speaker 2: and a little dark, but very amusing to me, John.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Finally this week. Dorothy McHugh was born in nineteen o seven,
- 36:39Speaker 2: passed in nineteen ninety five. A nice long life for
- 36:41Speaker 2: Dorothy mcew. Do you want to know what? Do you have?
- 36:43Speaker 2: Any I do? She was Q tip She would nick Hugh,
- 36:47Speaker 2: hug h m mick the MQ tip do not insert
- 36:53Speaker 2: in ear canal, John. She was an American dancer. Okay,
- 36:57Speaker 2: I was way and ex Zigfried Follies Dnswer and she
- 37:00Speaker 2: appeared in a medical device commercial proclaiming I've fallen, oh
- 37:06Speaker 2: and I can't get up, for which she was paid
- 37:08Speaker 2: Are you ready for this? Sixty dollars? And I hope,
- 37:13Speaker 2: I hope that's not all she was paid.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Surely Dave Thomas did better than that later, maybe when
- 37:18Speaker 1: she blew.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Up Dave Thomas, what are you getting, Dave Thomas? I'm sorry,
- 37:21Speaker 2: I was doing the word you're thinking of Wendy's lady.
- 37:23Speaker 2: We'd had her on too. That was Clara, somebody Clara
- 37:26Speaker 2: Paun can't get up, pawn can't get up? Hey?
- 37:28Speaker 1: Why not? Dave Thomas was very generous.
- 37:30Speaker 2: That's true. Why wouldn't he help her out? To the
- 37:33Speaker 2: Wendy's guys somehow gonna get involved a benefactor for Dorman.
- 37:37Speaker 3: That's probably keeping my mind all the way to one hundred. Yeah,
- 37:40Speaker 3: I don't think going.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Well, it was not. I think you're in the cloud now.
- 37:45Speaker 2: But she was paid sixty I mean that's crazy like
- 37:47Speaker 2: commercial work. Like I've known some people who've done commercial
- 37:50Speaker 2: acting jobs and it actually pays decent. This they took
- 37:53Speaker 2: advantage of this old lady. Yeah, and she couldn't have
- 37:56Speaker 2: known that this is not just going to be the
- 37:58Speaker 2: most famous commercial of that year. But it's going to
- 38:01Speaker 2: be a meme like early meme, yeah, like whenever. Memes
- 38:04Speaker 2: weren't a thing yet, but it was basically a a
- 38:07Speaker 2: past around. People would say it if you feil yeah,
- 38:12Speaker 2: they would say John's following he can't get up.
- 38:15Speaker 1: It made Life Alert that it was Life Alert.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Yeah, my mom, we got Life Alert and it's the
- 38:19Speaker 1: old one and it uses old technology, but it's still
- 38:21Speaker 1: the only one that they'll talk to her through the
- 38:24Speaker 1: necklace if she needed to.
- 38:26Speaker 3: And that's why I got it. Was like she could
- 38:28Speaker 3: push a button and she had to wait on somebody
- 38:30Speaker 3: they'll talk to.
- 38:30Speaker 1: It's like a radio.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Well, she had invested her Zigfreed Folly's dancing money. She
- 38:36Speaker 2: also worked as an artist model in Post for illustrations
- 38:38Speaker 2: in the Saturday Evening Post. She acted in the film
- 38:40Speaker 2: Artists and Models in nineteen thirty seven, starring Jack Minnie,
- 38:43Speaker 2: and was a model for the nineteen thirty nine New
- 38:46Speaker 2: York World's Fair. So she had some oka. She was
- 38:49Speaker 2: a well rounded but by the time she's fallen and
- 38:51Speaker 2: can't get up for this commercial, she's older because that
- 38:54Speaker 2: was thirty nine. The last time she was Yeah, doing
- 38:57Speaker 2: movies and so she was hopefully she had but if
- 39:02Speaker 2: she did a commercial for sixty dollars, it's likely she
- 39:05Speaker 2: needed the money.
- 39:06Speaker 1: So people pay actors.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Act actor. Listen. There's no small parts, only small actors.
- 39:11Speaker 1: That's what I've always been telling Listen. Writer's right if
- 39:14Speaker 1: you write.
- 39:15Speaker 3: I mean again, I think that probably one of them,
- 39:20Speaker 3: to me, most important books I ever write is the
- 39:22Speaker 3: one with a publishing company I won't get paid for
- 39:26Speaker 3: because it's a university press. Right. But you know, like
- 39:29Speaker 3: you you can't see it in terms of just monetary success,
- 39:33Speaker 3: like there's.
- 39:34Speaker 2: No there's thing. Yeah, there's things I've done. And even
- 39:37Speaker 2: in my career where I if I was to say like, okay,
- 39:39Speaker 2: we're gonna if I only thought bottom line thinking all
- 39:43Speaker 2: the time, you have to pay the bills. But every
- 39:45Speaker 2: now and again you'll be like, I don't. I would
- 39:49Speaker 2: normally say no to this, and I'll send it to
- 39:52Speaker 2: my agent. I'll be like, let's make this happen. I
- 39:54Speaker 2: want to do it. It'll be something. It'll be some
- 39:57Speaker 2: small church, or it'll be some fundraiser for a that
- 40:00Speaker 2: I really believe in, or you just have a feeling
- 40:03Speaker 2: about it. Sometimes you go I think we should do this. Yeah,
- 40:06Speaker 2: and then nine times out of ten when I do those,
- 40:08Speaker 2: it's like, oh, I get it. You find out as
- 40:11Speaker 2: you step into the moment why you did it right.
- 40:13Speaker 2: You know, it's like God protected you from saying no
- 40:16Speaker 2: to this thing and being like only a bottom line
- 40:19Speaker 2: oriented person. There's a time to be bottom line. You
- 40:22Speaker 2: can't starve. But I mean, come on, man, sure we're
- 40:25Speaker 2: you can get it again. This is a kid we're
- 40:28Speaker 2: This is a kid's game that I'm playing at, you know,
- 40:30Speaker 2: even more so than baseball and basketball, Like making jokes
- 40:34Speaker 2: for living is definitely a kids game. So it's like
- 40:36Speaker 2: it's not important. You're getting paid to be a class clown. Yeah,
- 40:39Speaker 2: it's not important. So like what are we doing here?
- 40:41Speaker 2: So yeah, man, And I say that to say, don't
- 40:44Speaker 2: send me your weird booking request because I turned down
- 40:46Speaker 2: most of those. But but if I'm just a little asterisk,
- 40:50Speaker 2: come on, it's fine. Send away love to come do
- 40:53Speaker 2: your wonderful event this year. Yeah, I'm pretty busy, John,
- 40:57Speaker 2: You're a pretty busy guy. I will say some really
- 41:00Speaker 2: cool surprises for my upcoming taping on August twenty ninth
- 41:07Speaker 2: at the BJU Theater in knoxvill, Tennessee, my hometown. We're
- 41:09Speaker 2: doing a live taping and taping the next my next project,
- 41:12Speaker 2: and you want to be there at three pm. Still
- 41:15Speaker 2: have some tickets available. Get your weird laugh on tape.
- 41:18Speaker 2: But we went through one of the musical numbers today
- 41:19Speaker 2: with some special guests and it is coming together. But
- 41:23Speaker 2: I got a little bit of chills. It was like, whoa,
- 41:25Speaker 2: this is something. Yeah, so master musicians, you don't want
- 41:28Speaker 2: to you don't want to miss it, and if you do,
- 41:30Speaker 2: you'll never ever forgive yourself. No, John is going to
- 41:33Speaker 2: miss it because he's got a volleyball something. Yeah, I'm sorry,
- 41:36Speaker 2: I've got a college visit that we've we've reached an
- 41:40Speaker 2: m pass.
- 41:41Speaker 1: I know. I'm very sorry. It's killing me, but no,
- 41:43Speaker 1: it's not killing you.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll be fine.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Uh.
- 41:47Speaker 1: We do have a little announcement to make too.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 41:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:51Speaker 3: So I johnn and I are talking the other day
- 41:57Speaker 3: and I told Johnny, both of.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Our lives are I've gotten a little it's got a
- 42:03Speaker 1: little bananas lately.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Johnny, a little bananas.
- 42:06Speaker 3: You guys have noticed it in several weeks, like we
- 42:07Speaker 3: couldn't pull off an episode or whatever, like I mean
- 42:09Speaker 3: between I'm telling you I'm under three manuscript deadlines and
- 42:13Speaker 3: Johnny's traveling more than.
- 42:14Speaker 1: He ever has, and you know, it's it's just a
- 42:16Speaker 1: crazy season.
- 42:17Speaker 3: So you know, we probably should have taken some of
- 42:20Speaker 3: our summer off, which a lot of podcasts do, and
- 42:23Speaker 3: we muscled through because we love.
- 42:26Speaker 2: We love you, dear listener.
- 42:28Speaker 3: Yeah, but we're gonna take a little hiatus after this
- 42:32Speaker 3: episode and not sure how long. We're gonna just take
- 42:36Speaker 3: some time, you know. And Johnny pointed out it's just
- 42:39Speaker 3: been going over ten years now, and Hiatus, of course
- 42:42Speaker 3: is the Greek god of vacation. Yeah, in Greek mythology. Yeah,
- 42:47Speaker 3: we love that here.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and uh but yeah, we yeah, it's ten years,
- 42:52Speaker 2: ten years and uh it's been. And by the way,
- 42:54Speaker 2: if you want to listen to the old episodes, you
- 42:57Speaker 2: can go to talk about that podcast dot com.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Yeah, not going anywhere.
- 43:00Speaker 2: They're not going anywhere and they'll stay there and uh
- 43:03Speaker 2: yeah and we'll uh you never know, you never know
- 43:05Speaker 2: what we're going to pop back up on your old timelines,
- 43:08Speaker 2: my friends.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Yeah, we just gotta, we just gotta, we just gotta
- 43:11Speaker 3: take a little a little break. I might even I
- 43:14Speaker 3: don't want to say this because I you know, I
- 43:15Speaker 3: ain't making false empty promises, right. You know?
- 43:18Speaker 1: We could put out some compilation episodes.
- 43:19Speaker 2: That's true. Yeah, we need to do that. We need
- 43:21Speaker 2: to do that to where we go through. Maybe Claude
- 43:23Speaker 2: will help, because John's a big Claude proponent.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Man, I wish he could.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Let's let's bring AI slop into this. That's all we need.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Why do we even need us?
- 43:34Speaker 3: That's true, just type in make maybe I just yeah,
- 43:38Speaker 3: I wonder if we each created no no our own
- 43:41Speaker 3: like you know, I use I use an AI.
- 43:43Speaker 1: It's not it's not Claude. It's called Speechify.
- 43:46Speaker 3: I use it to edit in that I'll it has
- 43:48Speaker 3: my voice and it will read a manuscript to me
- 43:51Speaker 3: in my voice, and I catch every mistake by doing
- 43:53Speaker 3: that's crazy, Oh wow, because I can watch it highlights
- 43:56Speaker 3: the words, but hearing it your own voice, visually seeing it,
- 43:59Speaker 3: and then like it's crazy, it's it's it's nuts. What
- 44:02Speaker 3: if we you speechified and just fed a bunch of
- 44:04Speaker 3: stuff and had it do a podcast, you with your
- 44:07Speaker 3: voice meeting with me.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I wonder what we do. Yeah, it's not gonna work.
- 44:11Speaker 1: You can't hate. You can't replace this professionalism.
- 44:13Speaker 2: That's true. What if I like the robot John better?
- 44:18Speaker 2: I like this guy, he's got real personality. You know what,
- 44:22Speaker 2: Let's keep the show going. This is we don't need
- 44:24Speaker 2: a break at all. I just needed I needed a
- 44:27Speaker 2: soulss john.
- 44:30Speaker 1: The equation the soul does get in the way.
- 44:32Speaker 2: That's true.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I found well.
- 44:34Speaker 2: We appreciate though.
- 44:35Speaker 3: Again, all the time and all the episodes, you can
- 44:38Speaker 3: still go back and listen.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Make sure make sure you watch, especially.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Johnny's Socials during the break because he'll always be telling
- 44:45Speaker 3: you what the next show is and you need to
- 44:47Speaker 3: go see him.
- 44:48Speaker 1: You need to go see the guys. He needs you.
- 44:53Speaker 1: But there were tears when we were off air, like
- 44:56Speaker 1: please just someone No, I was kidding me. He's doing
