Transcript
- 0:00Have you ever felt like your ideas aren't being taken seriously or that you aren't
- 0:04being heard when you speak up in meetings?
- 0:06How about when somebody else presents the idea that you just
- 0:09brought up to great approval?
- 0:11These can be symptoms that you're lacking executive presence, because
- 0:16EP is all about having influence.
- 0:17Executive presence is defined as that something special about you that
- 0:21tells people that you're in charge.
- 0:23It's often hard to define and even harder to develop as a result.
- 0:28Our clients have often heard that they need to develop executive presence,
- 0:32but their manager can't describe it, and they don't know what they would
- 0:36be doing differently if they had it.
- 0:38So I understand this because even the scholars don't describe it well.
- 0:43Sylvia Ann Hewlett is one of the experts in executive presence.
- 0:47her model is communication plus gravitas, plus appearance.
- 0:51But I think that's a little bit oversimplified myself because
- 0:55gravitas is also hard to explain.
- 0:57and This is important because women are often needing to improve this leadership
- 1:02skill the most in order to get promoted.
- 1:04This is because women tend to be promoted based on their performance,
- 1:08whereas men most often get promoted based on their potential.
- 1:11So women really need to develop that executive presence to seem like the
- 1:15leader at the next level before they get the job as the leader at the next level.
- 1:19I'm Jill Lavy, a career success coach, and this is Sister Smart Leadership, the
- 1:25show that explores how women can rise from director to vice president and beyond
- 1:29by fully leaning into their feminine energy as their biggest advantage.
- 1:33Let's get you one step closer to the recognition and promotion you deserve.
- 1:38At Sister Smartt, we use an approach from Bates Communications.
- 1:42Their model is backed by research from over 20 years of experience
- 1:46of coaching the world's top executives on executive presence.
- 1:50And they use 15 facets to describe executive presence.
- 1:53And I love this for women because it's important to develop this in an
- 1:58authentic way that feels authentic to you.
- 2:01And when you're using the 15 facets, you can pick and choose and find which
- 2:05ones really fit your style, and you can optimize it to feel like it's you and who
- 2:10you are at the court instead of trying to fit into this male leadership model.
- 2:15At Sister Smartt we've broken down these 15 facets into five, five buckets.
- 2:20Coach Sarah is with me here, and she's going to talk first about the first
- 2:25quality of executive presence, which is, what we define as "how I operate."
- 2:30Yeah, this is such a great topic and so I love that you're
- 2:33breaking it down in this way.
- 2:35It's so great to have a model to work off of, and so how I operate, that,
- 2:40encompasses, that practical wisdom.
- 2:42So how are we showing up in our leadership?
- 2:46Are we staying attuned to industry trends?
- 2:50Are we working on developing those leadership skills and
- 2:55honing in on our strengths?
- 2:58Are we being intentional?
- 2:59Are we being consistent with the way that we operate?
- 3:03Because that supports in building trust.
- 3:06Having integrity, having good character, and showing that I can do the role.
- 3:12I am thriving in this role, succeeding in this role and having impact.
- 3:17And also, do I have vision?
- 3:19Do I know where I'm going as well?
- 3:21So how I operate consists of those qualities.
- 3:25And so being able to step back and self-reflect on, how am I in this area?
- 3:30Like are there areas that I would like to develop when it
- 3:34comes to my daily operations?
- 3:38That's really great because people need to be able to trust that
- 3:41you know how to do what you do.
- 3:42The next one is called How I Treat Others.
- 3:46So this is really about your interactions with the humans around you.
- 3:51So particularly your team members, but it can be beyond
- 3:54your team the senior management people that don't report to you.
- 3:58So what we think about when we talk about executive presence here is authenticity.
- 4:04Do people feel like they're getting the real you?
- 4:07It takes authenticity to be able to build trust with people.
- 4:11This is a real key for leadership to be able to be successful in your
- 4:15role, is to feel like they're getting the real you when they talk to you.
- 4:21Then having concern for people like care and concern here is really important.
- 4:26If people don't feel like you care about them at all and that, that you don't
- 4:32see them as a human, like sometimes as particularly the higher up you go.
- 4:38The less you actually have, interactions with people and it can be easier to,
- 4:44and tempting to see people more as numbers and as productivity factors.
- 4:49Really seeing that human in front of you is important here.
- 4:52Assertiveness is another piece that it's not only about the softer
- 4:56connecting skills, but it's also about standing your ground when you need to.
- 5:00Because as leaders we often have to stand our ground and we often
- 5:04have to assert ourselves and that little bit of forcefulness when
- 5:09it's needed is Is really important.
- 5:12And then resonance.
- 5:13So this is that quality that you have with people that is attractive.
- 5:18They like being with you and they like your way and your method.
- 5:22And the next is how I present.
- 5:25that encompasses our projected confidence.
- 5:28And so what I mean by that, that's that magnetic force that people can
- 5:32feel when they're in your presence, however, that projected confidence
- 5:36is, if I feel butterflies on the inside, am I projecting that or am I
- 5:41able to get my state to a calm space?
- 5:47Can I manage those emotions that are maybe brewing inside me?
- 5:52And so, thinking of it as what type of composure do you want to bring to
- 5:56meetings, to presentations to challenging conversations because we have those, our
- 6:03mirror neurons reflecting, the energy that we want to experience in the room
- 6:08and other people can pick up on that.
- 6:09So this is where we work on, some type of meditation or breath work.
- 6:15When we're thinking about how do we want to show up in our professional space,
- 6:20can we calm the storm down inside of us?
- 6:24As women, we spoke about, performing at the next level.
- 6:27So it's not like we want to fake this type of confidence, but we want to
- 6:32truly embody these skills so that the projected confidence that we're bringing
- 6:37to our professional life is the one that we're showing up in the next level.
- 6:42So that real confidence.
- 6:43So you might feel like I'm just 80% of the way there.
- 6:47So being able to calm yourself in the middle of a storm or a hard
- 6:51conversation is really important.
- 6:53So you want to be noticing like, what am I projecting?
- 6:56So if you notice the feelings inside of you, pause and take a moment to
- 7:02really be intentional with how you want to show up in that conversation.
- 7:06And the fourth one is how I connect.
- 7:10Connecting with people is really important, and there's some
- 7:14things that we can do to connect better with those around us.
- 7:17So the first one is inclusiveness.
- 7:19This is such an important skill for leaders and for so many reasons, not be
- 7:23that go beyond executive presence, but it will give you better executive presence
- 7:27the more that you want to bring others in.
- 7:30You know that you can't do this alone and that you need others.
- 7:34And so wholeheartedly committing yourself to inclusiveness.
- 7:38In leadership coaching, we know that inclusiveness really builds
- 7:42stronger companies and the better performance for the company.
- 7:46So this is one I get really passionate about.
- 7:49Also interactivity is another one.
- 7:52You can't just sit behind your desk or in your ivory tower or whatever to
- 7:56be the best leader that you can be.
- 7:58Interactivity, it means management by walking around we used to call
- 8:02it, it's a little bit more like management by checking in with people
- 8:05these days in a virtual world, but really interacting with people.
- 8:10Think about it as getting out from behind your desk and,
- 8:13connecting one-on-one with people.
- 8:15This is about having an open door policy.
- 8:18Yes.
- 8:18So that you're allowing people to come in and interact with you, but also making
- 8:22space and time for you to go out and proactively seek people out and seek out
- 8:27conversations that you wouldn't have.
- 8:28These are the water cooler conversations and our businesses
- 8:31today are A hybrid situation.
- 8:34Some companies are all virtual that makes these things a little bit harder to do and
- 8:38you have to be more intentional about it.
- 8:40the third part of how I connect is about humility.
- 8:43You can't connect with people truly without a sense of humility because it
- 8:48really takes that to have that heart to heart connection and often humility
- 8:53really helps you build respect too.
- 8:54I find that this is one that usually women are really strong at.
- 8:57Let's talk about the fifth quality of
- 8:59how I look.
- 9:00Yeah.
- 9:01So last but definitely not least How we look is very important.
- 9:06It's typically the first thing people will see about us.
- 9:10They'll have an impression when they see us.
- 9:12And so we want to look and feel our best.
- 9:15Sylvia Hewlett talks about being polished, right?
- 9:18It doesn't matter how attractive you are, doesn't matter if you're a size four.
- 9:24It's when you look in the mirror in the morning after you've gotten ready
- 9:28for your day, Am I reflecting back?
- 9:30Do I care about myself?
- 9:32Do I matter?
- 9:33Am I putting energy into my physical wellbeing?
- 9:38So looking at clothes that fit you and that make you feel and
- 9:42look most attractive, right?
- 9:44I know during the pandemic I've put on some extra weight and so I now find
- 9:49clothes that really accentuate and fit best for me with where I'm at now.
- 9:54And I don't need to be any certain size.
- 9:56And I've seen many leaders all walks of life, like in different sizes
- 10:01that when they put in some energy and effort into their clothing and into
- 10:06their accessories, and their makeup and really pulling it together in a
- 10:10way that when they leave the house, they feel proud about how they look.
- 10:14Because let's face it, women are being judged all the time.
- 10:19Well, let's look at politics or in the news and even on the media, right?
- 10:24So we are judged different than, than our male counterparts, right?
- 10:29And so we do want to, when we leave the house, be like, I really am
- 10:33showing up for myself to the best of my ability with what I have
- 10:37right now and feel good about that.
- 10:40And I feel like that does affect our energy as well, ? It's going to
- 10:44affect our confidence, our ability to connect, which is that charisma that
- 10:50we have with other people, And also creating that encouraging, supportive
- 10:54environment just by having, being in connection and relationship with other
- 11:00people because they will remember us like how they felt about us.
- 11:05Their perceptions when they see us and when they walk away,
- 11:10how they will remember us by.
- 11:12And so all of that comes from what they're seeing and what they're viewing of us.
- 11:17We can't stop these judgments, right?
- 11:19But we want to have the best judgment of ourself.
- 11:23That comes with being polished to the best of our ability and know
- 11:28that that is going to impact so many people as we, we are out in the world.
- 11:33What's the fingerprint that we want to leave out there?
- 11:35What's the brand that we want to leave with, with those that we're
- 11:39interacting with on a daily basis?
- 11:42So I do believe that even though it's number five, it's very important
- 11:46because it's happening all the time.
- 11:50And one thing I want to add to how I look and that charisma and energy
- 11:54that we have is, be thinking about our habits as women and are they
- 12:01supportive of good self-care habits?
- 12:04So for example, am I getting enough sleep?
- 12:07Do I know maybe if I'm deficient in a vitamin that I actually
- 12:11need or a supplement that I need so that I could be at my best?
- 12:14Am I eating good, healthy food so that I have the energy to go out in
- 12:20the world and do the work that I do?
- 12:22Am I taking care of my physical body, even if it's 15 minute walks
- 12:28occasionally throughout the day.
- 12:29Am I getting the physical fitness that I need so that I can be at my best?
- 12:35Really think of how I look, like, so much more than just, how is my
- 12:41hair and how are, how is my clothes?
- 12:43There's the energy behind it as well and our good self-care habits as
- 12:48well, because that is going to support how we are showing up in the world.
- 12:53It's going to support our charisma as well.
- 12:56Just show that we are taking good care of ourselves and that we matter.
- 13:01It's so important how we, how we feel.
- 13:03Inside is really how we're projecting ourselves outside.
- 13:06And that reminds me of another client who went to a sales meeting and she had been
- 13:10working hard on her executive presence and she kept wanting to look behind her to see
- 13:14who people were talking to because they were talking to her with such reverence
- 13:18and like that she was really a, a step above them and she didn't feel that way
- 13:23inside, but she knew that, that they had shifted how they were seeing her.
- 13:28So that's a really positive way that you can see your
- 13:30executive presence shift as well.
- 13:32Oh, that's a great story.
- 13:35So we like to leave you with three shifts that you can make today.
- 13:39And the first one that we would love for you to do is to find somebody
- 13:43that can be your muse, who is someone that you could model yourself after.
- 13:48That you appreciate how they carry themselves and the
- 13:51kind of leader that they are.
- 13:53Could be somebody that you know or that you don't know.
- 13:55So it might be somebody in your company, but it may be somebody that is a leader
- 14:00of another company that you admire.
- 14:02The second one would be to pick one of the things that we've talked
- 14:06about that you would like to improve.
- 14:08And our third one would be to get some feedback from a mentor and now that
- 14:13you know these five qualities yourself, what are you hearing from other people?
- 14:17What are they seeing in you that you're doing well and that you could improve?
- 14:23So if this resonated for you, I would love to hear in the comments, which of the
- 14:28five qualities you'd like to work on most.
- 14:30Let us know in the comments if you're watching the YouTube version, and
- 14:34to remind you, it's how I operate, how I treat others, how I present,
- 14:40how I connect and how I look.
