- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name is Sanatasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud
- 0:04Speaker 1: your the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And
- 0:08Speaker 1: before we get started on She's on the Money podcast,
- 0:11Speaker 1: I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the
- 0:13Speaker 1: land of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 2: here to make your year end on a high note,
- 1:02Speaker 2: even if your budget had a few plot twists along
- 1:05Speaker 2: the way. It's quite all right, you know what d
- 1:07Speaker 2: it is?
- 1:08Speaker 4: What day is?
- 1:08Speaker 1: It? Be?
- 1:08Speaker 2: Its Christmas? Christmas Day. While the presents are unwrapped, the
- 1:16Speaker 2: pavlover is in the fridge right now as we speak,
- 1:18Speaker 2: and the family debates over monopoly are hopefully on.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Paul.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Oh no, they're not, like my family's going to write
- 1:24Speaker 4: over Katan. We don't play monopoly.
- 1:25Speaker 2: We play Katan. Yes we are savage. I like playing
- 1:30Speaker 2: logo quiz.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I can actually spoil it now because it's Christmas Day,
- 1:33Speaker 4: but I bought the expansion packs for my family for
- 1:36Speaker 4: a time for Christmas.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Idea. That's really great, Oka, I'm gonna pull it out
- 1:41Speaker 2: today as well. So we're taking him over to reflect
- 1:43Speaker 2: on something even more precious. How we spent our time,
- 1:45Speaker 2: our money, and our energy this year. That's love is awesome.
- 1:49Speaker 2: So today we're unwrapping the Gift of Reflection VD. And
- 1:53Speaker 2: I couldn't think of a better person to dive into
- 1:55Speaker 2: this with than the woman who somehow balances budgets, businesses
- 1:59Speaker 2: and baby bottles Victoria Divine.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Oh, I've never watched a baby bottle. Honestly, my husband
- 2:04Speaker 4: does all of that, so that's exactly how. But I'm
- 2:07Speaker 4: excited about this. I was talking about this on Instagram
- 2:10Speaker 4: the other day and I didn't achieve a lot of
- 2:13Speaker 4: my personal goals this year, which I feel like people
- 2:16Speaker 4: look at me and they go, shut up, V, like
- 2:18Speaker 4: you're so successful.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah, But I wrote a list and I checked it
- 2:21Speaker 2: twice and then I didn't do anything on it.
- 2:23Speaker 4: It's okay, which is fine because this year I approach
- 2:27Speaker 4: every single situation with grace and kindness, and that's the
- 2:32Speaker 4: bare minimum exactly. At the end of the day, a
- 2:35Speaker 4: lot of people can't say they did the same.
- 2:37Speaker 2: No, you can definitely like not check things off your list,
- 2:39Speaker 2: But if you're kind to yourself, you've won. Today we'll
- 2:42Speaker 2: be chatting about how reflecting on the past year can
- 2:44Speaker 2: set you up for success and the next. And I've
- 2:46Speaker 2: got a few juicy questions lighted up to do intervd's
- 2:49Speaker 2: own highlights and lessons from this year. So should we
- 2:52Speaker 2: start with why reflection is so important? Does it really
- 2:55Speaker 2: help us make my decisions? Or is it just another
- 2:57Speaker 2: thing to add to our to do list?
- 2:58Speaker 4: Maybe it's just like another thing to add to how
- 3:00Speaker 4: to do list. If you type a like me, you
- 3:02Speaker 4: like adding things to you to do lists like it
- 3:04Speaker 4: makes you feel accomplished, So take it however you want.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But reflections are so incredibly important.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Beck.
- 3:10Speaker 4: It's not just I don't know, a little feel good reflection,
- 3:13Speaker 4: but more because they're backed by solid psychology. You know,
- 3:16Speaker 4: I love a little bit of research. So I'm comeing
- 3:18Speaker 4: to the table with the receipts when I'm coming you know,
- 3:20Speaker 4: of course, taking time to reflect on your year. It's
- 3:23Speaker 4: not actually just about like telling up all you ins
- 3:25Speaker 4: and then all your losses. It's about giving your brain
- 3:27Speaker 4: the space to process, learn and grow, which is kind
- 3:31Speaker 4: of nice.
- 3:32Speaker 2: So the first thing I want to.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Touch on here is memory, consolidation and learning. So that's
- 3:36Speaker 4: the heading I've written for myself, and then there's nothing
- 3:38Speaker 4: under it, so who knows what I'm about to say,
- 3:40Speaker 4: So it's just like watch it fall out, but reflecting
- 3:44Speaker 4: on what has worked for us financially and then personally
- 3:47Speaker 4: then what hasn't and why. It's going to help create
- 3:51Speaker 4: mental shortcuts for making better decisions in the future, Like
- 3:54Speaker 4: why didn't that work for you? Oh it didn't work
- 3:57Speaker 4: because ABC? Okay cool, So like have we learned something
- 4:00Speaker 4: from this? And you'd be like, yeah, actually I have. Yeah,
- 4:02Speaker 4: I'm not going to approach something like that again this way.
- 4:05Speaker 4: I'm going to do it this way. I want you
- 4:07Speaker 4: to think of it as kind of like rewiring your
- 4:09Speaker 4: brain to be your own personal finance coach. Like that's
- 4:13Speaker 4: a good deal, Like I want a personal finance coach
- 4:16Speaker 4: that I don't have to pay money.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Which she's in here exactly.
- 4:20Speaker 4: You're not the biggest book person in the nie world,
- 4:22Speaker 4: but I am. There's a book by Norman Deutsche and
- 4:25Speaker 4: it is called The Brain That Changed Itself And it
- 4:27Speaker 4: is so interesting if you're not going to like read
- 4:30Speaker 4: it back audio book it like I listened to it,
- 4:33Speaker 4: but it talks about this concept of neuroplasticity.
- 4:37Speaker 2: It's just very cool.
- 4:38Speaker 4: It's like about these people with brain damage who forget
- 4:41Speaker 4: how to walk and then they're like thrown in the
- 4:43Speaker 4: deep end of being taught how to walk again. With
- 4:46Speaker 4: this idea that your brain has a certain way of learning.
- 4:50Speaker 4: So if you were a baby and you were learning
- 4:54Speaker 4: to walk, you would first learn to crawl, and then
- 4:56Speaker 4: you would learn to like, you know, stand up assisted,
- 4:59Speaker 4: and then you would learn to walk right, whereas people
- 5:02Speaker 4: historically who have gotten injured and have to learn to
- 5:05Speaker 4: walk again, they are just taught to walk immediately, and
- 5:08Speaker 4: that is often not the best way of doing things
- 5:10Speaker 4: because your brain needs to create absolutely brand new neural
- 5:13Speaker 4: pathways to be able to do these things. So like,
- 5:16Speaker 4: wouldn't it make sense to do the progression again?
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 5:20Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, So it's an interesting concept, but it's essentially
- 5:24Speaker 4: this concept called neuroplasticity, where the brain adapts and optimizes
- 5:29Speaker 4: itself over time, because if one neural pathway is not
- 5:32Speaker 4: working or it is destroyed, you can actually create another one.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Talking about like walking here because for me that's probably
- 5:38Speaker 4: the best example. But if you have an accident and
- 5:41Speaker 4: something happens to your brain, Beck, and you've forgotten how
- 5:43Speaker 4: to walk because that bond in your brain of hey, Beck,
- 5:47Speaker 4: this is how you wire your body to walk has
- 5:49Speaker 4: been broken. You need to either rebuild that or create
- 5:52Speaker 4: another neural pathway. And starting from the start makes the
- 5:56Speaker 4: most sense. So it's kind of like being able to
- 6:00Speaker 4: identify what is and isn't working for you so that
- 6:02Speaker 4: you can create new pathways or celebrate the ones that
- 6:05Speaker 4: you have that are working really well.
- 6:07Speaker 2: It's a really good way to look at it.
- 6:09Speaker 4: I think it's really fun. But like you have to
- 6:11Speaker 4: crawl before you can walk, yes, And I think that
- 6:14Speaker 4: that's a fun thing to do as well, because it
- 6:16Speaker 4: just really reminds you that, yeah, you might not have
- 6:18Speaker 4: achieved this, but did we actually start where we needed
- 6:20Speaker 4: to start. The other thing I've written down here is
- 6:23Speaker 4: reflection taps into metacognition, or the ability to think about
- 6:28Speaker 4: our own thinking.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Okay, I'm going to have to get that broken down,
- 6:32Speaker 2: think about your own thinking. Yep.
- 6:34Speaker 4: So studies have actually shown us that by engaging in
- 6:37Speaker 4: reflective practices. He sounded hippie dippy at the start, but
- 6:40Speaker 4: I promise it's real research.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I love it.
- 6:42Speaker 4: It boosts self awareness and it improves future performance. Yes,
- 6:48Speaker 4: so by recognizing and internalizing patterns, we effectively become better
- 6:53Speaker 4: at coaching ourselves towards making strategic decisions.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:57Speaker 4: So we're thinking about the way that we're thinking, and
- 6:59Speaker 4: that helps us think clearer. I get that I am doing,
- 7:03Speaker 4: like investing the money that our money makes makes money.
- 7:05Speaker 4: It's like your brain is braining, and then if you
- 7:08Speaker 4: brain properly, you'll be able to brain more.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Put that on a T shirt and wear it. Yeah,
- 7:14Speaker 2: we really are. Our brains are really remarkable.
- 7:17Speaker 4: But brains are so crazy to think that I'm in
- 7:19Speaker 4: my own head thinking about my own head.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Now, where you're sitting, you're perceiving the room a different
- 7:26Speaker 2: way I'm perceiving.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Right, And how do we know that something looks different
- 7:29Speaker 4: to one of us exactly?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Like?
- 7:30Speaker 2: How did you work out that people were color blind?
- 7:33Speaker 4: Yes, well that's like, oh that's a really nice red
- 7:36Speaker 4: light and the red light where how do they exactly?
- 7:40Speaker 4: I need to do a lot more research, but back
- 7:42Speaker 4: onto this. So, yes, it's important because by understanding why
- 7:46Speaker 4: you're making certain decisions back whether they were great or
- 7:49Speaker 4: maybe they could use a little bit of work, we
- 7:52Speaker 4: are actually empowering ourselves to approach the future with clarity
- 7:55Speaker 4: and confidence, which I think is important. It's not about
- 7:58Speaker 4: being perfect, like nobody needs need to be perfect and
- 8:00Speaker 4: none of us are perfect. It's about learning from the
- 8:04Speaker 4: messy bits and then celebrating the moments where we've freakinhaled it,
- 8:07Speaker 4: like we need to celebrate ourselves.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Yes, so what if someone is hypothetically sitting there and thinking,
- 8:14Speaker 2: mayu's mess where do we even start? How do I?
- 8:18Speaker 2: It passes when it all kind of like feels like
- 8:19Speaker 2: one big blur, don't worry, Beck, don't you worry? Next
- 8:23Speaker 2: year is a new year.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Twenty twenty thrive, Yes, twenty twenty thrives so lame. But
- 8:29Speaker 4: also reflecting doesn't have to be this like a big, overwhelming,
- 8:32Speaker 4: arduous task. It's about creating a little space where we
- 8:36Speaker 4: can just be honest about a year. It's like when
- 8:38Speaker 4: you do budgets and you know how I say, like
- 8:39Speaker 4: don't judge yourself, Like, what's the point in that if
- 8:42Speaker 4: you sit down and you're going to look at your
- 8:43Speaker 4: budget and be like, oh, I'm so bad.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I'm not good at UPC Okay, cool.
- 8:47Speaker 4: So this was an exercise in making ourselves feel like
- 8:49Speaker 4: trash about our situation, yeah do?
- 8:52Speaker 2: Or is it an.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Exercise in identifying what's going on so that we can
- 8:55Speaker 4: create a clear plan for the future, Like, just draw
- 8:58Speaker 4: a line and sand I don't want to hear all
- 9:00Speaker 4: of the junk where you question yourself and say that
- 9:02Speaker 4: you're bad at things.
- 9:03Speaker 2: You're not.
- 9:03Speaker 4: You just didn't have a plan, Like people are like,
- 9:05Speaker 4: oh my god, I'm so bad at money v No,
- 9:08Speaker 4: you're not. You just didn't have a framework. What I
- 9:10Speaker 4: want you to do when it comes to thinking about
- 9:12Speaker 4: your year is find a moment ask yourself, beck what
- 9:17Speaker 4: worked this year? Right?
- 9:18Speaker 2: What didn't work? What did you learn?
- 9:20Speaker 4: Do you feel icky about anything? Do you feel really
- 9:22Speaker 4: good about anything?
- 9:23Speaker 2: What are they?
- 9:24Speaker 4: Don't overthink it.
- 9:25Speaker 2: It's not perfection.
- 9:26Speaker 4: No one else has to look at this, by the way,
- 9:27Speaker 4: like you could even burn the note after if you're like, oh,
- 9:29Speaker 4: I don't really want to write it. Yeah, I got
- 9:32Speaker 4: asked the other day like, V do you journal, and
- 9:34Speaker 4: I was like, absolutely not. I'd end up in jail,
- 9:36Speaker 4: like you would use that stuff in a court of
- 9:39Speaker 4: law against me.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I can't write it down what happens in here.
- 9:43Speaker 4: I don't need you to be perving on it. I
- 9:44Speaker 4: want you to go to my bedside table and pick
- 9:46Speaker 4: it up and be like, holy g a moment, she
- 9:48Speaker 4: is as cooked as we thought she was.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Whenever I like try to journal, I always write in
- 9:52Speaker 2: a way where I'm traveler might read, Yeah, I'm trying
- 9:55Speaker 2: to be cool. I do the same thing though, and
- 9:58Speaker 2: I'm like, no one's gonna remain diary. Yeah, it's not
- 10:02Speaker 2: a big deal or anything, but I just save someone's life,
- 10:05Speaker 2: you know. I'm just trying to be really cool and
- 10:06Speaker 2: really like not too like dramatic.
- 10:07Speaker 4: But I wouldn't want to actually put my real feelings
- 10:09Speaker 4: down if somebody reads, it's really not the point of journal.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Yeah, you have to put that down, but you can
- 10:17Speaker 4: burn it later if you really want to, Like we.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Can destroy the evidence. Yes, we can get rid of it.
- 10:21Speaker 4: But it's actually about being curious, Like what did you
- 10:25Speaker 4: start thinking about jot it down? The goal is really simple.
- 10:28Speaker 4: We want to spot the lessons and celebrate the wins
- 10:31Speaker 4: and let the rest go exactly right.
- 10:33Speaker 2: So this is kind of in the same vein, But
- 10:36Speaker 2: I'll just know that, like I get to the end
- 10:38Speaker 2: of the year, I'm reflecting, I'm looking at the things
- 10:40Speaker 2: that didn't work, and when I'm writing up new things,
- 10:44Speaker 2: I'll be like, Okay, we know the motivation is fleeting.
- 10:46Speaker 2: We know that we're going to get to a point
- 10:48Speaker 2: where my motivation here for one moment, gone forever exactly,
- 10:51Speaker 2: and I'm just like, Okay, next week, I'm going to
- 10:53Speaker 2: feelmpletely different. Next week, I'm going to be really unmotivated.
- 10:56Speaker 2: I'm going to predict the really crappy feelings, the ones
- 10:59Speaker 2: that lead me astray from my goals, and be like,
- 11:02Speaker 2: when I feel that way, and I know I will,
- 11:04Speaker 2: I'm going to do X y Z. So you just
- 11:06Speaker 2: could be honest about you might not stick to ease,
- 11:09Speaker 2: but what are you going to do when you feel
- 11:10Speaker 2: like not sticking to them anymore? Anyway, back onto the topic.
- 11:14Speaker 2: When we are thinking about this, should we like at
- 11:16Speaker 2: least acknowledged that twenty twenty four was a year, which
- 11:19Speaker 2: is start by acknowledging this year, I mean you took
- 11:23Speaker 2: over as the sole owner of Zella, which is incredible. God,
- 11:26Speaker 2: you released not one, but two books.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Yeah in one year, that was pretty big sleigh for me.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Yeah, you created an entire invessing master class, started churning
- 11:35Speaker 2: out four podcast episodes. We're actually unhinged. Yeah, yeah, you're unhinged.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Is this like a call Victoria out least it is?
- 11:42Speaker 2: And also if that wasn't enough, the most important thing
- 11:44Speaker 2: you went on a holiday. You went a holiday, and
- 11:46Speaker 2: you created a whole new life.
- 11:49Speaker 4: I had a baby that's actually unhinged. I'm tired, just myself.
- 11:54Speaker 4: I'm just sick of my own I'm sick of it
- 11:57Speaker 4: straight in the it's an expostive list, and that's why
- 12:00Speaker 4: I feel a little bit embarrassed when I'm like, oh,
- 12:02Speaker 4: I didn't really achieve my goals list, and like I
- 12:05Speaker 4: want to share my honest feelings about you know, hey,
- 12:09Speaker 4: this is what's going on, this is how I'm feeling,
- 12:11Speaker 4: rah are. But then also you do stuff like that
- 12:13Speaker 4: and you make me look really bad, Like all of
- 12:16Speaker 4: that makes me look great. But then I'm like, I
- 12:18Speaker 4: didn't achieve my goals and people are going to be like,
- 12:20Speaker 4: shut up, Victoria sure you do have ever, we also
- 12:23Speaker 4: have a whole team behind me, right, Like I did
- 12:25Speaker 4: write two books, that's fantastic, But do you really think
- 12:27Speaker 4: I sat there and wrote the entire investing masterclass in
- 12:30Speaker 4: isolation and then built a whole online platform, Like I
- 12:34Speaker 4: have a team behind me. It's will be so sick
- 12:37Speaker 4: of me, but like it takes a village and I'm
- 12:40Speaker 4: very very lucky for that. So yes, my plate was
- 12:43Speaker 4: very full, very grateful. But there's so much stuff I
- 12:47Speaker 4: want to do next year, Like next year is the
- 12:49Speaker 4: year of Zella love that.
- 12:51Speaker 2: What about me?
- 12:53Speaker 4: You can come along for the ride. I mean I'm
- 12:55Speaker 4: still here literally every day.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Perfect. Okay, that's very company with everything you had on
- 12:59Speaker 2: your plates. What's the biggest lesson twenty twenty four taught
- 13:03Speaker 2: you a boy yourself?
- 13:03Speaker 4: Well, I have a couple of lessons, but I did
- 13:06Speaker 4: sign an NDA, so I'm just going to share the
- 13:08Speaker 4: ones that I can share. Okay, that makes it sound
- 13:11Speaker 4: so much more. Yeah, I saw that on TikTok.
- 13:13Speaker 2: The other day.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Someone was like, what if somebody asks about like a
- 13:16Speaker 4: break in your career, Like they're like, oh, Beck, you
- 13:18Speaker 4: weren't employed for six months? Here, what happened, just say
- 13:21Speaker 4: I could talk about it, but I signed an NDA.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Oh that is so cool. Wouldn't that be funny? That's cool.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Can you imagine interviewing somebody and then going, I can't
- 13:29Speaker 4: talk about that.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I signed an NDA.
- 13:31Speaker 4: That is really cool, So funny anyway, complete side note,
- 13:34Speaker 4: what was my biggest lesson? Do you know what my
- 13:37Speaker 4: biggest lesson was? And this is hard, right, it's two things.
- 13:42Speaker 4: I feel like I trust too easily, but I don't
- 13:45Speaker 4: think that that's a bad thing.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I think at the start.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Of this year, I was like, this is a terrible thing.
- 13:49Speaker 4: I trust everyone too easily and I shouldn't. But I
- 13:51Speaker 4: think that's actually a really good personality trait. Although hard,
- 13:55Speaker 4: I think I learned that I can do it on
- 13:57Speaker 4: my own. So like I think for a very long time,
- 14:00Speaker 4: I have thought that I need other people to help
- 14:03Speaker 4: me along my journey. I need other people to come
- 14:06Speaker 4: in and I can't possibly do this on my own.
- 14:08Speaker 4: I need, you know, a hand to hold or something
- 14:11Speaker 4: to do. And I'm actually completely capable of doing it
- 14:13Speaker 4: on my own. I obviously say this every year, but
- 14:16Speaker 4: like it's about the process, not perfection, and like done
- 14:20Speaker 4: is much better than perfect.
- 14:21Speaker 2: So I've learned that.
- 14:23Speaker 4: I've also learned that I probably put too much pressure
- 14:25Speaker 4: on myself.
- 14:27Speaker 2: But then what else have I learned?
- 14:29Speaker 4: My instincts aren't wrong.
- 14:31Speaker 2: You gotta trust that fetuition. Yeah, like it's bad.
- 14:35Speaker 4: But like if you think something's off, Yeah, even when
- 14:39Speaker 4: you ask and they say na, na, na, no thing's off,
- 14:42Speaker 4: I'm all good.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Nah.
- 14:43Speaker 4: If you felt that something was off, something's off.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I gotta agree.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Your body knows, and I don't know how it knows.
- 14:48Speaker 4: And the more I feel like I tune into that,
- 14:50Speaker 4: the more I am learning about that.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Maybe I'm gonna like launch a universe podcast or something
- 14:58Speaker 4: in twenty twenty five and go full hipidip. But like,
- 15:00Speaker 4: I genuinely think you need to trust your intuition. If
- 15:03Speaker 4: your first reaction is this is not good, I promise
- 15:06Speaker 4: it's not. I've heard about like this bride who just
- 15:08Speaker 4: kept getting sick and just like she already kind of
- 15:10Speaker 4: knew there was something wrong with the relationship she was in,
- 15:12Speaker 4: but then there was the engagement. That's all this gift sharing.
- 15:16Speaker 2: You know, all this stuff. Everything was coming up, everything
- 15:17Speaker 2: was coming up, and she kept getting sick and she
- 15:19Speaker 2: did find out that something was wrong. So I feel
- 15:21Speaker 2: like your body knows, trust your body trust you in
- 15:22Speaker 2: sick I feel it's really good.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Trusting your gut is really important. Like I always say that.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Then I wasn't doing it. I feel iky, but like,
- 15:30Speaker 4: oh my god, everyone feels ikey doing this, Like this
- 15:33Speaker 4: is such a big decision.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard to distinguish.
- 15:37Speaker 4: There might be a reason for that. So, like it's
- 15:39Speaker 4: hard academically right, like, oh, I'm working so hard full stop,
- 15:42Speaker 4: but like if there is a process and there's so
- 15:44Speaker 4: much friction getting something across the line, maybe it's not
- 15:47Speaker 4: meant to happen.
- 15:48Speaker 2: I agree. So with so much going on, how did
- 15:50Speaker 2: you manage to balance the demands of work, motherhood, and
- 15:52Speaker 2: just you know, like being a human. Was there a
- 15:54Speaker 2: moment where you say, okay something, Yes, a lot of tears,
- 15:58Speaker 2: I'm sorry to here.
- 15:59Speaker 4: I feel like that's normal. Like if I feel overwhelmed,
- 16:02Speaker 4: sometimes I.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Just crack and I don't feel fry.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Like you know when you're just like, oh my god,
- 16:07Speaker 4: do this. It doesn't happen that often, to be honest,
- 16:10Speaker 4: doesn't happen at work.
- 16:11Speaker 2: You're welcome, But I think it's you're allowed, though, Yeah, like.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Something's got to give. I think I was very good
- 16:18Speaker 4: at foreseeing that this year would be a big year
- 16:22Speaker 4: for us at work, knowing I was having a baby.
- 16:24Speaker 4: We did a lot of pre planning to make sure
- 16:26Speaker 4: that we knew how this was going to go. But like,
- 16:29Speaker 4: I think it was just a challenging year as a whole,
- 16:32Speaker 4: and like that's not a bad thing. It has been
- 16:34Speaker 4: the best year of my entire life at the same
- 16:37Speaker 4: time as one of the worst. Yeah, so like best year.
- 16:40Speaker 2: I am a mom.
- 16:41Speaker 4: Do you know how obsessed I am with my kid?
- 16:43Speaker 4: Like I was born to be a mom. This is
- 16:45Speaker 4: the best. Like I could not sell it to you
- 16:48Speaker 4: harder beck, Like, I'm not saying that it's very everybody,
- 16:51Speaker 4: because someone the other day was like, I don't know,
- 16:52Speaker 4: I'm sitting on the fence about having a baby, and
- 16:54Speaker 4: I was like, don't do it. Yeah, like it's the
- 16:56Speaker 4: best thing that's ever happened to me. But it does
- 16:58Speaker 4: change your life. Yeah, it doesn't mean like in a
- 17:01Speaker 4: philosophical like oh my god, it's life changing way, Like
- 17:03Speaker 4: literally every single day looks very different to what it
- 17:07Speaker 4: did twelve months ago. Like my entire life revolves around
- 17:10Speaker 4: this tiny human and I don't want it anyway, yel like,
- 17:13Speaker 4: I don't want to change that. It's a big decision.
- 17:15Speaker 2: You gotta want it.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Then, on the flip side, oh my lord, business life
- 17:19Speaker 4: is hard, Like you know, I'm not going to get
- 17:22Speaker 4: too far into it, but I had a business partner
- 17:24Speaker 4: leave and that was obviously incredibly challenging. Finding that out
- 17:30Speaker 4: when I was very, very pregnant was not great. Having
- 17:34Speaker 4: to take over a business when I had a literal
- 17:37Speaker 4: newborn was incredibly challenging. All of those things could have
- 17:43Speaker 4: been avoided with some good planning and communication. But you
- 17:48Speaker 4: get what you get, and you don't get upset.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Do you bet? Well, that's exactly right. It is what
- 17:52Speaker 2: it is. I feel like we've just barely scraped the
- 17:55Speaker 2: surface because it has been such a ride for you.
- 17:58Speaker 2: But we have a lot of reflecting to do. Come back,
- 18:00Speaker 2: I want to dive into some of the biggest curve
- 18:02Speaker 2: balls of your year and hear what you've learned of
- 18:04Speaker 2: my year. Yeah, alright, I'm strapping in. I mean, I
- 18:08Speaker 2: might have one or two. I don't think I do. Actually,
- 18:10Speaker 2: don't go anywhere. Welcome back everyone, before the break, We're
- 18:16Speaker 2: chatting about all the incredible things you've tackled this year. V.
- 18:19Speaker 2: But let's get into the juicy stuff. What'd you see stuff?
- 18:21Speaker 2: If you got to bring to the table, you just
- 18:24Speaker 2: got a hot girlfriend. I'm so good at life. I'm thick.
- 18:28Speaker 2: So you lucked out this year. I did, like out
- 18:31Speaker 2: was my redundant though. Yeah, but then you got a
- 18:33Speaker 2: better job. I did get a better job. And I
- 18:35Speaker 2: probably said this already on the show, but I was
- 18:36Speaker 2: like sitting in like my cart, I just kind of
- 18:38Speaker 2: like felt defeat. I didn't have any petrol to drive home.
- 18:41Speaker 2: I didn't have the money. I didn't want to be
- 18:43Speaker 2: that person, and I was just like I said in
- 18:45Speaker 2: my card, I cried, tell me about this. Oh I'm
- 18:48Speaker 2: so sorry. Yeah, just breaks my heart. I think that
- 18:51Speaker 2: was my curve ball was just like I'm good at
- 18:53Speaker 2: being broke. I've been broke for a long time. Like
- 18:55Speaker 2: not having much money.
- 18:56Speaker 4: It's a bit different when you're like, yeah, thanks, it changed.
- 18:59Speaker 2: This was because it was like there is no money
- 19:01Speaker 2: coming and there is no money left. And I was
- 19:05Speaker 2: like I always borrow money from my friends, but at
- 19:08Speaker 2: this point, like my one friend who lived she had
- 19:11Speaker 2: no money either, So we were kind of borrowing from
- 19:13Speaker 2: each other at this point, and so I had nothing
- 19:15Speaker 2: left and I was like, oh my god, I don't
- 19:18Speaker 2: know what to do. I ended up calling my mom,
- 19:19Speaker 2: which was lovely, and I was like, Okay, I've got
- 19:20Speaker 2: Petrov get home, and now I'm just gonna like see
- 19:22Speaker 2: my life. So I was probably honestly, the reduci was
- 19:25Speaker 2: my curve ball and I wanted only I'm very grateful
- 19:28Speaker 2: to say that was all.
- 19:28Speaker 4: But then what happened because we need to like and
- 19:31Speaker 4: it was like around twenty jobs, twenty jobs.
- 19:34Speaker 2: I do video producing on the side. I have this job,
- 19:36Speaker 2: which I'm very grateful for. I just went back to
- 19:38Speaker 2: the same company and better pay, better job, you know,
- 19:41Speaker 2: all the good stuff.
- 19:41Speaker 4: So she's got two side hustles and a full time.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Yeah, glow up of the year. I think you said it,
- 19:47Speaker 2: but vat back to you. Was there a moment this
- 19:49Speaker 2: year where you took a risk or just followed your
- 19:51Speaker 2: a gut on something and it ended up paying off
- 19:53Speaker 2: big time.
- 19:55Speaker 4: I feel like I should be giving fluffy answers here
- 19:57Speaker 4: because I'm like the Real Ants series a bit juicy
- 20:00Speaker 4: gossy tell us. I'm trying to think of something less
- 20:04Speaker 4: juicy gossy, but like, you know what, I have the
- 20:06Speaker 4: juicy gossy.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I haven't done anything that I am not proud of.
- 20:10Speaker 4: I have treated every situation with sometimes the kindness it
- 20:15Speaker 4: did not deserve, sure, and the grace that if anyone
- 20:19Speaker 4: were to say anything bad about me, they would simply
- 20:21Speaker 4: know that that wasn't the case. Like, I just am
- 20:24Speaker 4: very proud of the way that I have dealt with
- 20:26Speaker 4: a lot of things that have happened this year, because
- 20:28Speaker 4: I could have been a nasty pasty and I wasn't.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Well, I'm very proud of you.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Not that I would be, but a lot of people
- 20:35Speaker 4: in my situation, I think would have been like bury it,
- 20:38Speaker 4: do this, do that? Like I've gone a bit savage.
- 20:40Speaker 4: I want to be able to look back on it,
- 20:42Speaker 4: and if I were sitting at the table with somebody,
- 20:44Speaker 4: I can say I actually carried myself with ultimate grace,
- 20:47Speaker 4: ultimate kindness, and you cannot say the same thing. And
- 20:49Speaker 4: I think that that is what helps me, or has
- 20:53Speaker 4: helped me get through a lot of this. I'm like,
- 20:55Speaker 4: do you know what I killed it with kindness? I
- 20:57Speaker 4: did so well? Yeah, And I guess one of the
- 20:59Speaker 4: big risks I took on this year was I purchased
- 21:05Speaker 4: half of my mortgage broking business back off a business
- 21:08Speaker 4: partner that I had that was not the right fit.
- 21:11Speaker 4: It just wasn't working out. Wasn't the right.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Fit, that is all I will say.
- 21:16Speaker 4: And purchasing that back was a choice that was kind
- 21:21Speaker 4: of forced, if that makes sense. Like they were leaving.
- 21:24Speaker 4: It wasn't an option for them to stay. And at
- 21:28Speaker 4: that time, I had the choice. I could have hired
- 21:30Speaker 4: someone to take on that role, right. I could have said,
- 21:32Speaker 4: all right, I'm just going to go hire an external person,
- 21:35Speaker 4: maybe like an office manager or like you know, a
- 21:38Speaker 4: managing director or someone to come in and run that business.
- 21:41Speaker 4: We had the funds to do so. But I think
- 21:44Speaker 4: that I could just see that the way the business
- 21:47Speaker 4: was running was not the way I wanted it to run.
- 21:49Speaker 4: And nobody is you, right, Like, if I wanted to
- 21:53Speaker 4: run the way that I wanted to run, I have
- 21:55Speaker 4: to frigg and run it. I have to jump in
- 21:57Speaker 4: and do this and do that. And so I made
- 22:00Speaker 4: decision to take on, with a newborn baby, a full
- 22:06Speaker 4: time job. And I am very grateful for my husband
- 22:09Speaker 4: and the team and literally everybody who's afforded me the
- 22:11Speaker 4: flexibility to be able.
- 22:12Speaker 2: To do that.
- 22:13Speaker 4: But I have taken over the whole mortgage broking business
- 22:16Speaker 4: and it is flying now, like it is exactly where
- 22:19Speaker 4: I wanted it to be. Like we are starting twenty
- 22:22Speaker 4: twenty five with more team members than we had at
- 22:25Speaker 4: this time last year. We've hired some incredible brokers. I
- 22:29Speaker 4: don't know how do I explain it. I feel like
- 22:30Speaker 4: the universe sometimes knows what you need, and I'd be like,
- 22:33Speaker 4: I really want this like personality in my business and
- 22:36Speaker 4: someone who's good at XYZ, and then all of a sudden,
- 22:39Speaker 4: like for example, earlier this year, I was like, far out,
- 22:41Speaker 4: I really like to find somebody who's good at like
- 22:44Speaker 4: commercial loans. So like we obviously specialize in mortgage broking,
- 22:48Speaker 4: but we're always getting asked like, hey, v do you
- 22:49Speaker 4: do commercial I was like yeah, like we technically can,
- 22:53Speaker 4: but we don't have a specialist. And the perfect person
- 22:56Speaker 4: just turns up and I was like, oh, I'd love
- 22:58Speaker 4: to work for Zella and I was like sorry, what, Like, HI,
- 23:00Speaker 4: come this way. So that has been really good, and
- 23:03Speaker 4: I think that the biggest risk was obviously taking that
- 23:07Speaker 4: role on. But also I'm not a mortgage broker. So
- 23:11Speaker 4: I'm a non mortgage broker running a relatively large sized
- 23:16Speaker 4: mortgage broking business all on my own. That's a risk,
- 23:20Speaker 4: it's extremely mass risky, and it's working out so far.
- 23:25Speaker 4: And I feel like I just knew in my gart
- 23:27Speaker 4: enough is enough. I can do this all on my own.
- 23:30Speaker 4: I don't need anybody else.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Yep.
- 23:32Speaker 4: And it's never been better.
- 23:33Speaker 2: I love that.
- 23:34Speaker 4: Is that bad? Is that too juicy or gossip? I
- 23:36Speaker 4: don't know if it's just just what it is right, Like.
- 23:39Speaker 2: If you had known back when you're starting Zella what
- 23:43Speaker 2: you know now, if you had the resources and the
- 23:46Speaker 2: capacity and all this stuff, everything was perfect, would you
- 23:49Speaker 2: have gone in alone or still?
- 23:51Speaker 4: Well, I did, I did so I started this business
- 23:54Speaker 4: myself in twenty seventeen. So I started in twenty seventeen
- 23:57Speaker 4: as a financial advice business and ran it on my own,
- 24:01Speaker 4: did all of that fun stuff. Had mortgage brokers working
- 24:04Speaker 4: for me, but I also have my financial advice team
- 24:06Speaker 4: when I was working as a financial advisor. In September
- 24:09Speaker 4: twenty twenty two, I sold the financial advice of the business,
- 24:13Speaker 4: so I kept owning Zella. I still had a mortgage
- 24:16Speaker 4: broking business. And I sold the financial advice business because
- 24:19Speaker 4: I knew I was getting married two months after that,
- 24:23Speaker 4: and I knew I wanted babies, and like something had
- 24:25Speaker 4: to give, right, Like I cannot run a big financial
- 24:28Speaker 4: advice business where I was the main advisor and have
- 24:31Speaker 4: a podcast and have mortgage broking and do all of
- 24:34Speaker 4: the stuff that I do, right, So sold that and
- 24:38Speaker 4: decided at about that time I would bring in a
- 24:40Speaker 4: business partner to look after my mortgage broking business, at
- 24:43Speaker 4: which point that kind of was established as a brand
- 24:46Speaker 4: new entity to make sure that everything was clean and good.
- 24:49Speaker 4: That's the business partner that's left. So it wasn't somebody
- 24:52Speaker 4: who established Zella with me. It was someone who technically
- 24:55Speaker 4: worked and was employed by Zella, but also had a
- 24:58Speaker 4: shareholding in the business. Understand, Okay, So then they exited,
- 25:03Speaker 4: so I was technically the owner of like all of
- 25:05Speaker 4: the other stuff.
- 25:06Speaker 2: So it's not like I would have quote lost my business.
- 25:09Speaker 2: It was intertwined or two tangle. No.
- 25:12Speaker 4: No, And that's what a good shareholders agreement will do
- 25:14Speaker 4: for you.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Gosh, she's good. So were there any moments this year
- 25:17Speaker 2: where things like, I know, this is kind of what
- 25:18Speaker 2: we're talking about but like digital plan or obviously that
- 25:22Speaker 2: y yes, but like business podcasts or life.
- 25:25Speaker 4: And everything, you can never plan anything, know, like you
- 25:29Speaker 4: can plan to the nth degree, right, but that doesn't
- 25:32Speaker 4: mean that your plan is going to work out. So
- 25:35Speaker 4: I think just being flexible and going like all right,
- 25:37Speaker 4: well what can we do instead?
- 25:38Speaker 2: Or all right, no worries.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Like in our industry there is always changing moving parts,
- 25:44Speaker 4: like the way algorithms work, the way podcast measurement works,
- 25:48Speaker 4: the way things actually eventuate. It's always changing. And whether
- 25:53Speaker 4: that is you know, oh far out, you know in
- 25:55Speaker 4: a couple of weeks, you know, Spotify are doing this,
- 25:58Speaker 4: you know, highlight on a particular topic, so I want
- 26:01Speaker 4: to make sure that my topic kind of aligns. Like
- 26:03Speaker 4: you will change your podcast plan all the way through
- 26:06Speaker 4: to changing staff members and whatnot, like you just roll
- 26:10Speaker 4: with the punches. I feel, yeah, I feel like we're
- 26:12Speaker 4: all just making it up. Still absolutely, And also you
- 26:15Speaker 4: just adapt, don't you just just do what you got
- 26:17Speaker 4: to do, but always lead with.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Kindness is the plan that's gorgeous.
- 26:21Speaker 4: I don't know if it is just like do good,
- 26:23Speaker 4: be good, Like I can't imagine telling my grandma something
- 26:27Speaker 4: that I wasn't proud of you know, if I can't,
- 26:28Speaker 4: if I couldn't tell my nana.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Shouldn't be doing it? Should you? Oh that's a really
- 26:32Speaker 2: good way to look at it. Now she's in the money.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I've heard of that. Have you heard of
- 26:37Speaker 2: that podcast?
- 26:38Speaker 4: Nah?
- 26:38Speaker 2: It's grown so much this year and the community feels
- 26:40Speaker 2: stronger than ever I feel. So, was there a piece
- 26:43Speaker 2: of feedback or a moment with a listener that really
- 26:45Speaker 2: stuck with you?
- 26:46Speaker 4: I want to say yes, and I want to say no, Sure,
- 26:50Speaker 4: is that bad? No? It probably is because there's been
- 26:54Speaker 4: so many of them. So it's not just like one
- 26:56Speaker 4: moment that I'm like, this is the moment that I remember.
- 26:59Speaker 2: It's like a collection. It's like.
- 27:02Speaker 4: A whole heap of like little memories from you know,
- 27:05Speaker 4: doing money diaries and you know, jumping on zoom to
- 27:08Speaker 4: record and then being like hey, just before we jump in.
- 27:10Speaker 4: I just want to say that, like, my entire life
- 27:12Speaker 4: has changed because if she's on the money, quite what
- 27:15Speaker 4: running into people at the zoop market and they're like, hey,
- 27:17Speaker 4: you're Victoria, aren't you, And I'd be like, oh, yeah,
- 27:19Speaker 4: I yes, I'm all my husband's track pants and they're like,
- 27:22Speaker 4: oh my god, I am only good at money because
- 27:25Speaker 4: you taught me how to. And I got out of
- 27:27Speaker 4: zip pay. Like I was at an event and a
- 27:29Speaker 4: girl came up to me. She's like, I'm so sorry
- 27:30Speaker 4: to do this is so weird, but I just need
- 27:32Speaker 4: you to know that. Like I was in so much
- 27:33Speaker 4: personal debt that I was about to file for bankruptcy
- 27:35Speaker 4: and because of your podcast, I didn't.
- 27:37Speaker 2: That's incredby. Isn't that sick?
- 27:38Speaker 4: Yeah, Like message us every day with their like money
- 27:41Speaker 4: wins and confessions.
- 27:42Speaker 2: And I don't want you to stop.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Like it's my favorite part of our community is not
- 27:46Speaker 4: just sharing, but the fact that we have an impact.
- 27:49Speaker 4: And I think is there one moment, No, because they're
- 27:51Speaker 4: all so special in their own way, but I think it's, yeah,
- 27:56Speaker 4: just this idea that we help you create the life
- 27:59Speaker 4: you deserve. I know this question was not directed to
- 28:02Speaker 4: me at all, but I just feel like when I
- 28:05Speaker 4: was asked to do this, I was like, this isn't
- 28:07Speaker 4: gonna last long. I don't know anything about money, and
- 28:09Speaker 4: which is good, that's what I need. But like it's
- 28:12Speaker 4: just incredible.
- 28:12Speaker 2: And so people will sometimes message me to tell me
- 28:15Speaker 2: that they enjoy me on the podcast or even when
- 28:17Speaker 2: people send me their Brogue tips.
- 28:18Speaker 4: I'm like, it's almost like actually capable.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Yeah, like you see me and you value the role
- 28:26Speaker 2: that I play on this show. I'm literally in chills
- 28:29Speaker 2: onto it. It's like that is so so cool. Yeah,
- 28:35Speaker 2: I just think we have an incredible community and I.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Love our community. But like it's because you show up
- 28:40Speaker 4: is exactly who.
- 28:40Speaker 2: You are, and that's what we want.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Like I don't want you to be pretending to be
- 28:44Speaker 4: somebody else, so like trying to be good at money
- 28:46Speaker 4: for the show.
- 28:47Speaker 2: No, everyone is welcome here. That is really really cool.
- 28:50Speaker 2: I love love that. Thank you for sharing that. That's
- 28:52Speaker 2: so cool. See you. Oh my god. You've mentioned before
- 28:57Speaker 2: about how becoming a mum has shifted your perspective. If
- 29:00Speaker 2: do you feel like it has changed the way you
- 29:01Speaker 2: approach your goals or your time.
- 29:03Speaker 4: I want to say yes and no. I feel like
- 29:06Speaker 4: I've done that to every question you've had. I'm like, yeah, nah,
- 29:09Speaker 4: and why does it It's not from a business perspective, No,
- 29:13Speaker 4: it has just motivated me to do more and be more.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Like I just go, oh, there's so much more I
- 29:20Speaker 4: want to do, and like I'm motivated now in a
- 29:22Speaker 4: way that I wasn't before my time. I think I
- 29:26Speaker 4: am more defensive of it. Yeah, So like before, if
- 29:30Speaker 4: you said, Harvey, I know you don't work on Mondays,
- 29:33Speaker 4: but could you come in and do a half day.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Record, I'd be like, yeah, no worries, Like that's so fine. Beck.
- 29:37Speaker 4: If you ask me now to do something on a Monday,
- 29:39Speaker 4: I'll be like absolutely, not, absolutely and absolutely not. That's
- 29:42Speaker 4: actually my time with Harvey. And that's I told you
- 29:45Speaker 4: that was my time with Harvey.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Respect it.
- 29:47Speaker 4: I'm flexible, but I do prioritize him and his well being,
- 29:52Speaker 4: and I think that that's the bare minimum of being
- 29:55Speaker 4: a parent. But then also it's like this inherent like
- 29:58Speaker 4: I want him to reflect on his childhood and be like,
- 30:01Speaker 4: far out it was such a good child. Like I'm
- 30:03Speaker 4: obsessed with being a mum and being his mum. And
- 30:07Speaker 4: I think it has definitely shifted my perspective in terms
- 30:11Speaker 4: of like what that work life balance looks like and
- 30:13Speaker 4: being a little bit more aggressive about.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Protecting it, protecting a piece.
- 30:17Speaker 4: But I think a lot of people had said to
- 30:19Speaker 4: me when I was pregnant or even before I had
- 30:21Speaker 4: a baby, they're like, just wait until you have baby.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Because like your priorities will shift.
- 30:24Speaker 4: And I feel like they were saying that in a
- 30:26Speaker 4: way that it was like, oh, you won't care so
- 30:28Speaker 4: much about work, or you you know, won't love doing X,
- 30:32Speaker 4: Y Z as much. I think I've been very lucky
- 30:34Speaker 4: and very supported in becoming a mum that I still
- 30:37Speaker 4: love what I loved before. I can understand when people
- 30:41Speaker 4: say I became a mum and I lost myself. But
- 30:44Speaker 4: I think I became a mum and I was really
- 30:47Speaker 4: reinforced in who I was. But that's not saying that,
- 30:50Speaker 4: you know, other people don't go through that. I think
- 30:53Speaker 4: I was really worried about that. But I also think
- 30:56Speaker 4: before I became a mum, I was quite clear on
- 30:58Speaker 4: my goals and like my career and what was its
- 31:00Speaker 4: important to me. And I was really worried because people
- 31:03Speaker 4: make parenting sometimes sound awful. They're like, oh my god,
- 31:07Speaker 4: just wait until you don't get any sleep, Just wait
- 31:09Speaker 4: until you walk into daycare and pick them up, and
- 31:12Speaker 4: like their smile is the biggest thing in the room,
- 31:14Speaker 4: Like do you know what I mean? Like, I think
- 31:15Speaker 4: that there are so many people who think that you
- 31:19Speaker 4: can't do it. All or have it all, but they
- 31:22Speaker 4: don't realize you just can't do it all or have
- 31:23Speaker 4: it all at once. And I think it's about shifting perspective.
- 31:27Speaker 4: There's just a lot of people that would say, Oh,
- 31:29Speaker 4: I could never have a career be like you do
- 31:32Speaker 4: and put my kid in daycare. Do you know how
- 31:34Speaker 4: much better I am as a mum because of daycare?
- 31:36Speaker 4: Do you know how much better I am as a
- 31:38Speaker 4: mum because I have a career that nourishes me. If
- 31:42Speaker 4: you don't want that, like you do you as you know,
- 31:44Speaker 4: I couldn't care less what you do as long as
- 31:46Speaker 4: you're happy, like if you want to be stay at
- 31:48Speaker 4: home mum slate like I used to think that was
- 31:51Speaker 4: something that I would love. But I adore my job.
- 31:55Speaker 4: I adore what I do and what I get to do,
- 31:58Speaker 4: and daycare is just part of my village absolutely, And
- 32:01Speaker 4: you just feel happy and satisfied and fulfilled in your
- 32:04Speaker 4: everyday life, then you're going to be way happier. I
- 32:07Speaker 4: want him to see that, and I hope that that
- 32:08Speaker 4: work ethic rubs off on him and he then finds
- 32:12Speaker 4: his passion and that I don't know, I think that
- 32:14Speaker 4: that's how my perspective has shifted because it's not necessarily
- 32:19Speaker 4: the way I view things, because I genuinely thought that
- 32:22Speaker 4: everything would change and it just didn't. Yeah, but I
- 32:27Speaker 4: think it's just I've become a little bit more defensive
- 32:29Speaker 4: about the time that I have and the way I
- 32:30Speaker 4: want to spend that time and how I want that
- 32:32Speaker 4: to work.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Gorgeous. If you thought for.
- 32:35Speaker 4: A hot second, yeah, that I wasn't going to turn
- 32:37Speaker 4: the tables though on this entire show, you were wrong. Sure,
- 32:43Speaker 4: Like you use this whole episode to ask me the
- 32:45Speaker 4: big questions. So I think it's time to put you
- 32:48Speaker 4: in the hot seat. So strappy and buckle up. You
- 32:50Speaker 4: are absolutely in trouble. No, okay, let's go. I want
- 32:54Speaker 4: to hear about your year, your moments, and maybe some
- 32:57Speaker 4: financial confessions. I feel like you've confessed every day on
- 33:00Speaker 4: this podcast, though, so let's go. You've been diving headfirst
- 33:05Speaker 4: into the world of finance this year. Yes, what do
- 33:07Speaker 4: you think has been the most surprising or like game
- 33:09Speaker 4: changing thing that you've learned about money that you wish
- 33:12Speaker 4: you knew sooner?
- 33:13Speaker 2: I wish I knew that it's possible for people, including
- 33:19Speaker 2: those who don't start off at the same level and
- 33:23Speaker 2: they don't have access to like the same things. And
- 33:25Speaker 2: I completely get that. I grew up with this mindset
- 33:28Speaker 2: of money that's like once I get a little bit,
- 33:30Speaker 2: it's gone again. I'm spending it. And this whole year
- 33:34Speaker 2: I've been the same and I feel like I'm locked in.
- 33:37Speaker 2: But having chats with my friends and the people who
- 33:41Speaker 2: care about me and want me to be able to
- 33:44Speaker 2: change that, I kind of thought like, I don't think
- 33:47Speaker 2: I have the ability to like why people just saving,
- 33:50Speaker 2: Like why people just doing this? Why people just motivated
- 33:53Speaker 2: to do that? But I realized very recently when I
- 33:56Speaker 2: was explained to my partner. She was like, Hey, we're
- 33:59Speaker 2: going to go on a hold next you like to
- 34:00Speaker 2: start saving for it? And I was like, what does
- 34:02Speaker 2: it look like? I was like, what do you mean?
- 34:04Speaker 2: Like I usually just get to the part where the
- 34:06Speaker 2: holiday is and I'm like, oh shit, I've got ass
- 34:10Speaker 2: or I've got this pay cycle. I'll just not spend
- 34:12Speaker 2: on anything else, like that's all. I'm never looking for
- 34:15Speaker 2: the future. But I realized, oh my god. And we
- 34:18Speaker 2: had a person ride in recently who was like, how
- 34:20Speaker 2: do I find motivation to save for all these things?
- 34:22Speaker 2: When I just don't feel it, like what the hell
- 34:24Speaker 2: am I saving for? I think I'm like that, but
- 34:27Speaker 2: I've just very very recently shifted that and been like, oh,
- 34:31Speaker 2: I don't have to save for a house. I'm actually
- 34:33Speaker 2: saving for experiences, And I'm saving for those moments where
- 34:37Speaker 2: all my friends want to go to Japan and I
- 34:39Speaker 2: can do that without feeling stressed. And I'm saving for
- 34:41Speaker 2: those moments where you have a really good time, good
- 34:44Speaker 2: time exactly. And I'm saving for next Christmas when I
- 34:48Speaker 2: can go out and buy all the really nice things
- 34:50Speaker 2: and make myself feel really cozy. So I realized with
- 34:53Speaker 2: finances that motivation just wasn't there for me. And I've
- 34:56Speaker 2: been really bad with money my whole life and I
- 34:58Speaker 2: probably still will be for a while. And that's where
- 35:00Speaker 2: we're gonna fix it. But it takes time, right, It's
- 35:03Speaker 2: not something that you can just turn on. I think
- 35:05Speaker 2: I just needed to shift the way of thinking, like,
- 35:07Speaker 2: not everyone just does it. Not everyone can just do it,
- 35:11Speaker 2: and that's okay. You just got to find a way
- 35:14Speaker 2: that works for you. And that's where I am right now.
- 35:16Speaker 2: I love that. Thank you.
- 35:18Speaker 4: I feel like that is honestly so special because I
- 35:21Speaker 4: don't think that when you started on the podcast, it
- 35:23Speaker 4: would have been a mindset that.
- 35:25Speaker 2: You have exactly, not at all. I have ninety dollars
- 35:27Speaker 2: and Chezy's as well. I when you do say ninety, yes,
- 35:30Speaker 2: I have ninety dollars and Cheza's At the moment, that's exciting,
- 35:32Speaker 2: that is so cool all this. She's an investor.
- 35:35Speaker 4: I can't believe it, and she's about to become a
- 35:37Speaker 4: proper saver.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Who would have thought? I did think, but you did it.
- 35:42Speaker 2: We've talked a lot about.
- 35:43Speaker 4: I guess big money wins on the podcast. We always
- 35:45Speaker 4: talk about money wins every single week. But it's not
- 35:49Speaker 4: smooth sailing always. Earlier, you said that you had your
- 35:52Speaker 4: worst moment this year and you're crying in your car.
- 35:54Speaker 4: Which is the worst? Was that your biggest financial challenge
- 35:58Speaker 4: of the year? If not, what was How did you
- 36:01Speaker 4: approach that?
- 36:01Speaker 1: Like?
- 36:01Speaker 4: You went home, you got some petrol. But then what
- 36:04Speaker 4: I know, this probably.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Sounds weird, but my biggest financial challenge wasn't even the
- 36:08Speaker 2: financewers because I always have just been like this and
- 36:13Speaker 2: it's always been okay for me, and I always find
- 36:15Speaker 2: a way to still go out and see my friends
- 36:18Speaker 2: and do everything I have to do. The biggest financial
- 36:20Speaker 2: challenge for me actually came from the people around me
- 36:24Speaker 2: who cared so much and they wanted to see changing
- 36:28Speaker 2: me and my partner, Jess is very very good with money,
- 36:31Speaker 2: just seeing the disappointment or maybe feeling a bit misunderstood
- 36:34Speaker 2: in those moments and when people are like, why did
- 36:37Speaker 2: you even go to the place where you were then
- 36:39Speaker 2: stranded with your car and I'm like, okay, but that
- 36:42Speaker 2: doesn't help no exactly, And also like I get it,
- 36:45Speaker 2: like I didn't have to go to that place. I
- 36:47Speaker 2: wanted to go see my friend. I get it, I
- 36:48Speaker 2: didn't have money to get home, But I don't think
- 36:50Speaker 2: about it. I'm living for each moment. I'm living for
- 36:54Speaker 2: spending time with people, I'm living for experiences. I'm living
- 36:56Speaker 2: for all these things. It's just not in me. So
- 36:58Speaker 2: I think the biggest financial challenge didn't come from actually
- 37:02Speaker 2: having to just be like, oh wow, I've got literally
- 37:05Speaker 2: foison into my account. Maybe I will see if I
- 37:09Speaker 2: can just make a coffee at work with some soy
- 37:11Speaker 2: milk and some instant coffee and whatebout. Like I'm used that,
- 37:14Speaker 2: I'm okay with that. The biggest financial challenge, in fact,
- 37:17Speaker 2: came from the faces of the.
- 37:18Speaker 4: Genuine challenge being challenged about and like, I.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Feel misunderstood and I didn't like it, so.
- 37:25Speaker 4: That was probably sorry that was the case, but thank you.
- 37:28Speaker 4: How do you feel about that on reflection, Like, obviously
- 37:32Speaker 4: you felt misunderstood. Then have you found some clarity now
- 37:36Speaker 4: or is this something that you're like, this is kind
- 37:38Speaker 4: of still trashy? Just hoping the topic doesn't come up again, Like,
- 37:42Speaker 4: what's the take?
- 37:43Speaker 2: That's a great question, And I do honestly think like
- 37:45Speaker 2: I can understand why people think that. If you can
- 37:47Speaker 2: see someone repeatedly making the same mistakes, then you're like,
- 37:51Speaker 2: why don't you be doing?
- 37:53Speaker 4: Yeah, it's so easy to just fall into what are
- 37:56Speaker 4: you doing?
- 37:56Speaker 3: Yes?
- 37:57Speaker 2: So dumb? Yeah, And I just think that why don't
- 37:59Speaker 2: you just has always been like a shut up hate
- 38:03Speaker 2: I hate when you say that. I hate that. But
- 38:04Speaker 2: then now that I'm in a better spot, I'm like,
- 38:07Speaker 2: they care so much about me, and I think I
- 38:09Speaker 2: feel so seen when they inquire about my life, and
- 38:13Speaker 2: I feel so seen and cared for and held. I
- 38:15Speaker 2: understand that the way they express that is different, and
- 38:20Speaker 2: they don't want to enable me. So they do tend
- 38:22Speaker 2: to do that in the moments of stress. I don't
- 38:26Speaker 2: like to hear it. But upon reflection, I'm like, I'm
- 38:28Speaker 2: just so lucky that I have people that care about
- 38:31Speaker 2: me in my world.
- 38:32Speaker 4: You know how many people would just be like, trash them.
- 38:35Speaker 4: I don't even like them anymore.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and even just like that's a lot they're an idiot,
- 38:39Speaker 2: but whatever, it's not my problem. But being in a
- 38:42Speaker 2: community and being around people that love you and you
- 38:44Speaker 2: love them. Everyone's problem is everyone's probably, which is really
- 38:48Speaker 2: nice festive, isn't it.
- 38:50Speaker 4: That's very festive.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Yes, I think so. I think it's a really good
- 38:53Speaker 2: place to leave it.
- 38:54Speaker 4: I feel you're like, I'm over announce Stop asking me questions.
- 38:57Speaker 2: I'm shy now.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going now too, o Ben, I've got to
- 39:01Speaker 4: be closed, bude.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got to go and think about everything I
- 39:04Speaker 2: said that was wrong, and I know such thing. Honestly,
- 39:07Speaker 2: it's a big day for a lot of people. I
- 39:09Speaker 2: just want to also say, and I know that I
- 39:10Speaker 2: do this a lot, but those people who are spending
- 39:12Speaker 2: Christmas alone, just know that we're here, we got you,
- 39:14Speaker 2: and it's okay. Just do something that makes you feel
- 39:16Speaker 2: good with your alone, with family, with friends, with whoever.
- 39:20Speaker 2: We are here for you, and.
- 39:23Speaker 4: That's why we did this whole podcast today to hang
- 39:25Speaker 4: out with you on a day that you might not
- 39:27Speaker 4: have a lot of friends and family around you exactly,
- 39:30Speaker 4: so that we get to hang out with you.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Exactly the best.
- 39:33Speaker 4: We get you all to ourselves, and we're going to
- 39:35Speaker 4: give you a challenge as well. So this week, maybe
- 39:37Speaker 4: even today, if you can find fifteen minutes and find
- 39:42Speaker 4: a quiet moment, maybe like make a little coffee with
- 39:44Speaker 4: not stolen saury milk from a work fridge. But I
- 39:48Speaker 4: want you to ask yourself three simple questions. They're not
- 39:50Speaker 4: that simple by the way. They sound simple, but when
- 39:52Speaker 4: you start digging into them, you're like, God, So what
- 39:56Speaker 4: worked really well for you this year?
- 39:58Speaker 2: Yep?
- 39:58Speaker 4: Was it something emotional, something literally physical? Was it something
- 40:03Speaker 4: that you did that worked out really well?
- 40:06Speaker 2: What didn't go to plan?
- 40:07Speaker 4: Be honest with yourself. It's really hard to say, oh,
- 40:10Speaker 4: that didn't really work because you put in a lot
- 40:12Speaker 4: of time and energy and effort. But be kind to
- 40:14Speaker 4: yourself because we're not trying to crucify ourselves here. We're
- 40:16Speaker 4: just trying to ask the question so that we can
- 40:19Speaker 4: do better and be better and grow. And then what's
- 40:22Speaker 4: one lesson I can take into twenty twenty five? Like
- 40:26Speaker 4: I feel like I do this a lot, Like I
- 40:28Speaker 4: ask myself what do I want to stop? What do
- 40:30Speaker 4: I want to start doing? And then what's something I
- 40:32Speaker 4: want to continue doing. It's like the traffic light system,
- 40:35Speaker 4: it always works. So I feel like, ask yourself those
- 40:38Speaker 4: three questions, even if you're not a goal setter, and
- 40:41Speaker 4: I feel like that will set yourself up for some
- 40:43Speaker 4: pretty good success in there.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Absolutely, and it doesn't have to be complicated. Just jot
- 40:47Speaker 2: it down your notes, app talk it through with a mate,
- 40:49Speaker 2: or even just think about it while you're doing the dishes.
- 40:51Speaker 2: The key is just so many dishes this time of year. God,
- 40:54Speaker 2: so many dishes, so you'll have a lot of thinking
- 40:55Speaker 2: time to do, even if it's nothing like tangible physical
- 40:58Speaker 2: it just be like I want to change the inner
- 40:59Speaker 2: monologue my head that is kinder to myself, whatever it
- 41:02Speaker 2: may be. I think, Yeah, just take some time.
- 41:04Speaker 4: Just do that exactly, and don't forget to celebrate. I
- 41:06Speaker 4: feel like we don't celebrate the small winter moss, like,
- 41:09Speaker 4: let's celebrate the big ones. But also the small ones.
- 41:11Speaker 4: Maybe you paid off a little bit of debt, or
- 41:13Speaker 4: maybe you just finally logged into the account so you
- 41:16Speaker 4: know how much debt you have That is a really
- 41:18Speaker 4: big one. Maybe you started a savings habit. Maybe you
- 41:22Speaker 4: agreed to go on a holiday with your girlfriend and
- 41:24Speaker 4: you've started saving for the first time. Or maybe you
- 41:27Speaker 4: just learned something new about money. Or maybe you finished
- 41:29Speaker 4: this whole podcast episode. Congrats, babe, congrats, whatever it is.
- 41:33Speaker 4: I think we need to be giving ourselves credit. And
