- 0:00This is Laura Dierda with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:02podcast. I'm thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:04Jeff Beck, president and chief executive officer at
- 0:06Imagine three sixty. Jeff, it's a pleasure to
- 0:08have you on the podcast today. Yeah. Thanks
- 0:10for inviting me.
- 0:12Absolutely. My pleasure. You know, I'm excited for
- 0:14our conversation because I know we'll be digging
- 0:16into issues around health care affordability, quality, access
- 0:20to care, health equity, and more, which are
- 0:22all so important within the health care space
- 0:24today.
- 0:24But before we dive into that discussion, I'm
- 0:26wondering, can you tell us a little bit
- 0:27more about yourself and Imagine three sixty?
- 0:30Yeah. Sure.
- 0:32I have been in health care for, you
- 0:34know, three decades,
- 0:36have helped grow and manage health care services
- 0:39businesses, and,
- 0:40you know, have always been proud that I
- 0:42can help employers become,
- 0:44you know, more cost cost effective when they're
- 0:47purchasing health care and look for alternative and
- 0:49creative ways to, to save money and get
- 0:52the most bang for the buck for their,
- 0:54for their employees.
- 0:55And Imagine three sixty is a a growing,
- 0:58business that is,
- 1:01an alternative health plan,
- 1:03with a mission to make health care more
- 1:05affordable with with a great member experience and
- 1:08and help the
- 1:09lives of American workers and their families,
- 1:13be able to afford health care.
- 1:15That's an amazing mission and so important, especially
- 1:17today as I know a lot of families
- 1:19are struggling in in the health care, you
- 1:21know,
- 1:22expenses
- 1:23are continuing to pile up. And so I
- 1:25I really appreciate,
- 1:26that kind of ability to innovate and jump
- 1:29into an alternative plan that could really make
- 1:31a big difference for,
- 1:33patients and families across the board.
- 1:35From your perspective, I know balancing affordability and
- 1:38quality is a constant challenge for health plans.
- 1:40How is your organization
- 1:42innovating to manage the cost of care while
- 1:45also maintaining or improving member outcomes?
- 1:49So from a,
- 1:50in our perspective,
- 1:52we're interested
- 1:54in doing
- 1:55direct contracts,
- 1:57with certain high quality health systems.
- 2:00We're
- 2:02mainly focused on,
- 2:04ensuring that what we reimburse
- 2:07those systems is fair and equitable.
- 2:09If they don't go to those contracted relationships,
- 2:12we have a price protection approach, which is
- 2:15reference based pricing,
- 2:17which again,
- 2:18holds the line on reimbursement
- 2:20and makes health care a lot more affordable.
- 2:23And from
- 2:24a member experience perspective, it's really up to
- 2:26us to ensure that those employees and their
- 2:29families,
- 2:31know
- 2:32about their health care,
- 2:34program,
- 2:35know how to navigate to the appropriate sites
- 2:38of care.
- 2:39And then when they are, you know, experiencing,
- 2:42you know, a a medical situation,
- 2:45be be there for them and engage with
- 2:47them to ensure that they're having a good
- 2:50experience under some very tough conditions. And so,
- 2:53you know, that's that's kind of our MO
- 2:54in terms of how we're driving to this
- 2:56lower price point.
- 2:59Got it. That makes a lot of sense.
- 3:00And, you know, I I really appreciate how
- 3:02you can have, as you mentioned, that network
- 3:04of preferred and quality providers, but at the
- 3:07same time,
- 3:08allow for the members to also make decisions
- 3:12and and navigate through their own care as
- 3:13well. So I think that makes a lot
- 3:15of sense and is really helpful.
- 3:17And addressing health equity
- 3:19has become a really critical focus for many
- 3:21health plans. Can you share an overview of
- 3:24a key initiative here that you're involved in
- 3:26or are particularly excited about. What are you
- 3:29hoping to achieve?
- 3:30You know, health equity,
- 3:32it is something that's top of mind for
- 3:34Imagine three sixty. We,
- 3:37recognize that
- 3:38there are a lot of Americans who
- 3:41can no longer afford their out of pocket,
- 3:43their deductible,
- 3:45and there's been a ton of cost shifting
- 3:46that's happened over the,
- 3:48past, you know, several years.
- 3:51Medical debt, as everybody knows, 40% of Americans
- 3:55have it,
- 3:56and it's because the the their care from
- 3:59an out of pocket perspective,
- 4:01is something they don't have the the discretionary
- 4:03income,
- 4:04to meet. And so
- 4:06what we
- 4:08primarily try to do
- 4:10is
- 4:10ensure that they get the lowest cost of
- 4:12care,
- 4:13which saves money for the first dollar claim
- 4:16that they would use and the provider they
- 4:17would access.
- 4:18We have programs that check for things like
- 4:20financial assistance,
- 4:22to ensure that if they qualify for anything
- 4:25that's subsidized or free, they they they would
- 4:27get it. And so, you know, our our
- 4:31main theme is to reduce the cost of
- 4:33care, to reduce
- 4:35out of pocket costs,
- 4:37and when there is a chance that somebody
- 4:39may qualify for something that's free from a
- 4:41health equity perspective like financial assistance that that
- 4:44they get it.
- 4:45Got it. That makes sense and is really
- 4:47helpful and certainly
- 4:49helpful for those who are struggling with the
- 4:51that medical debt or who need care,
- 4:53but without the funds to really, purchase it
- 4:56effectively. And so I think that it is
- 4:59great, and and especially for those, as you
- 5:00mentioned, who qualify for subsidized or,
- 5:04free assistance, it seems like, it really makes
- 5:07a big difference for them to access the
- 5:09type of care that they need.
- 5:11And then I wanted to ask about member
- 5:13satisfaction as well. I know member satisfaction is
- 5:16essential to thrive in today's competitive health care
- 5:19market.
- 5:20What experience or engagement strategies have proven effective
- 5:23for your organization, and how are you measuring
- 5:26success?
- 5:27Yeah. We we measure success in many ways.
- 5:30We have NPS scores and member satisfaction scores,
- 5:33and they're consistently,
- 5:35from a member satisfaction,
- 5:37you know, in in the nineties high nineties.
- 5:40And I think it's partly because we
- 5:44we help employees take that extra step in
- 5:46their health care.
- 5:47When they call into,
- 5:50member support,
- 5:51we can do things like schedule an appointment
- 5:53for them.
- 5:54We can
- 5:55idea, you know, a facility in advance.
- 5:59Typically,
- 6:01that
- 6:01is gonna assist them in terms of spending
- 6:03the least amount of money possible out of
- 6:05pocket for that initial
- 6:07consult.
- 6:08You know, we we may ask an employee
- 6:10and and give them an option if they
- 6:12wanna drive an extra three or four or
- 6:13five miles.
- 6:15They may be able to save 200 to
- 6:17$2,000,
- 6:19for a facility that could be slightly higher
- 6:21quality. And, you know, people just don't have
- 6:24that data. They're not that as conscious of
- 6:26it as we are. And so
- 6:28we we do a lot to try to,
- 6:30you know, hug and wrap those members as
- 6:32best we can and guide them the best
- 6:34we can. And when they when they listen
- 6:35and do and follow, they typically wind up
- 6:37in a much better place.
- 6:40That makes a lot of sense. And it's
- 6:41really comforting to know that,
- 6:43an organization like Imagine three sixty has that
- 6:46data and information and then process it and
- 6:48communicate that, in an effective way for for
- 6:51members.
- 6:52Now looking ahead, what do you see as
- 6:54being the biggest opportunity for payers to lead
- 6:57the charge in transforming
- 6:59care delivery and driving better outcomes for all
- 7:01stakeholders.
- 7:02How can leaders really take that step into
- 7:04this direction now?
- 7:06Yeah.
- 7:07So,
- 7:09at the,
- 7:10upcoming Becker's payer issue roundtable,
- 7:14we
- 7:15we announced some findings from a study,
- 7:18about the perception of health care costs. And
- 7:21given health care costs have become a topic
- 7:23of, such a national conversation
- 7:25debate,
- 7:26you know, we wanted to understand
- 7:28how the average American feels,
- 7:31about their health care. The results kinda confirm
- 7:33that we
- 7:34what we've been hearing in our conversations
- 7:37with,
- 7:37benefit leaders and employers,
- 7:40that there's there's a serious affordability issue in
- 7:42health care,
- 7:45and American families are are impacted pretty dramatically.
- 7:49We find that nearly half of our responders
- 7:52either skipped
- 7:53or postponed, you know, necessary health care or
- 7:56medications due to the cost.
- 7:59Many of them saw their conditions worsen.
- 8:02This has kind of increased over the past
- 8:04couple of years.
- 8:05And as an industry, you know, we're heading
- 8:08in the wrong direction
- 8:09when that's kind of the state of play.
- 8:12And, you know, inaction
- 8:15and not taking a proactive,
- 8:17you know, step from a solution perspective or
- 8:20a strategy perspective
- 8:21ultimately affects the health, of, of American families.
- 8:25And so
- 8:26we we also kind of found that health
- 8:28plan premiums were the number one factor that
- 8:30are causing the affordability
- 8:32challenge,
- 8:33followed by high out of pockets.
- 8:36And this is where employers,
- 8:37I think, and benefit leaders,
- 8:40brokers, company likes like Imagine three sixty
- 8:43need to step up,
- 8:45and step in to see how these things
- 8:47can
- 8:49resolve themselves, become more affordable.
- 8:52And, you know, it's it's most employers' most
- 8:55valuable asset. Right? It's their employees.
- 8:57And if they're feeling,
- 9:00you know, unprotected, if they're feeling exposed financially,
- 9:04they're they're not gonna be at their best.
- 9:06They're not gonna be fully engaged.
- 9:08And the last thing you want as an
- 9:10employer is, you know, people with, you know,
- 9:13half their attention on your job and, you
- 9:15know, half their attention on things, you know,
- 9:17like
- 9:18access to care or,
- 9:21medical debt or, you know, just how are
- 9:23they gonna afford something as simple as an
- 9:26annual,
- 9:27checkup or procedure or colonoscopy. And so
- 9:30I I I I think that's the key
- 9:31theme for us.
- 9:34Absolutely. No. That makes a lot of sense,
- 9:35and, you know, it's certainly inspiring to hear.
- 9:38Jeff, thank you so much for joining us
- 9:39on the podcast. This has been a really
- 9:41fun conversation. I look forward to connecting with
- 9:43you soon and especially at our, payer issues
- 9:46roundtable as you mentioned. It's gonna be such
- 9:48an amazing event bringing together so many leaders
- 9:50from across the industry,
- 9:52to really engage in these types of discussions
- 9:54on, you know, innovation in the field and
- 9:56what we need next in order to, really,
- 9:58really evolve the health care system. So, Jeff,
- 10:01I appreciate it and look forward to seeing
- 10:03you soon. Yeah. Thank you. Thanks for the
- 10:05time.
