- Good morning, I'm Kai Rivers, and this is Studio Signal — your daily M&E intelligence briefing, brought to you by Harkins Capital. Let's get into it. Alright studio fam, it is Saturday, April fourth, and the box office is having its biggest weekend of the year so far, hands down. According to Deadline, the 'Super Mario Galaxy Movie' is absolutely rocketing to a massive five-day opening of more than 188 million dollars. The film jumped almost a hundred percent from Thursday to Friday alone. This isn't just a win, it's a massive statement piece for Nintendo's IP strategy and a huge sigh of relief for theaters. It proves that a beloved, multi-generational brand, when done right, can still create a genuine cultural event that pulls everyone to the multiplex. But as one world expands, another gets canceled. The Hollywood Reporter is confirming that Prime Video has pulled the plug on ‘The Runarounds’. This was the show from the creators of 'Outer Banks' that actually formed a real-life band to star in the series. It’s a tough break, and it’s another reminder of how incredibly competitive the YA space is on streaming. Even with a hot creative team, if a show doesn’t find its audience immediately, the axe falls fast. Over at Netflix, however, they're doubling down on a proven winner. Deadline reports that 'Love on the Spectrum' has been renewed for a fifth season. This makes perfect sense — the show is an Emmy-winning powerhouse and a genuine feel-good hit for them. What's interesting, though, is that TheWrap notes fan-favorite star Connor Tomlinson is exiting the show, saying he's chosen to "pass the torch." It’s a smart move to keep the franchise fresh while also celebrating the stars that made it a success. On the live entertainment front, things aren't going as smoothly in Tulsa. Variety is reporting that Zach Bryan had to cancel his concert tonight due to "extreme and dangerous weather." Bryan made it clear on social media that it wasn't his call, saying he was being forced to cancel and didn't have a choice in the matter. It's a brutal reminder of the one variable you just can't control in the live events business... Mother Nature. And on a much more somber note, Deadline reports the passing of actress Dee Freeman, who appeared in 'The Young and the Restless' and Tyler Perry's 'Sistas'. She was 66. Just a sad loss for the community, and our thoughts are with her family. Alright, before we head out, let's get a quick read on the market. It was a very strong close to the week. Of the 30 media and entertainment companies we track, 25 were in the green, with only 5 losers, pushing the sector to an average gain of 1.75 percent. Your top mover was AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc., which shot up 8.74 percent. Following that is CoreWeave, Inc., up a very healthy 4.84 percent. Then we have Roblox Corporation, climbing 4.30 percent. Spotify Technology S.A. is also looking strong, up 4.03 percent. And rounding out the top five is Imax Corporation, with a nice 3.86 percent bump. That bullish sentiment, especially for AMC and Imax, is almost certainly tied to those massive 'Super Mario' box office numbers, signaling renewed confidence in the theatrical experience. Today's news is a tale of two screens. While streamers are still making ruthless calls on what lives and dies, a single blockbuster movie just reminded the entire industry that nothing beats the power of the big screen. That's your signal for today. I'm Kai Rivers — thanks for tuning in, and I'll see you on Monday.
