Transcript
- 0:01Welcome to Rick and That Michelle Chick, the weekly
- 0:05podcast where your hosts, Rick and Michelle, confidently dive
- 0:10into topics they know absolutely nothing about and somehow make
- 0:15it sound legit. They're not experts.
- 0:17They're not qualified. Honestly, they barely googled
- 0:20it. So grab a drink, lower your
- 0:23expectations, and let's pretend this counts as content.
- 0:28So buckle up. Facts are optional, but the
- 0:31bullshit? That's premium grade.
- 0:34This is Rick and that Michelle chick.
- 0:41So you wanted to just this is rare.
- 0:44Normally I'm the one that starts everything off and talks about
- 0:47what we are going to talk about today.
- 0:49But you wanted to to discuss something so you can start.
- 0:54Well, I, I want to talk really super quick because I know that
- 0:58some people are once again fascinated by the radio side of
- 1:01things, right? You know, pulling the curtain
- 1:04back. Pulling the pulling the curtain
- 1:05back and and why radio is such a unique business or career if you
- 1:12choose it as your career and and and I think that by bringing
- 1:16this up, I just want to make a point that something happened to
- 1:19a a Co worker well not necessarily a Co worker of mine
- 1:21and not necessarily a Co worker of yours yeah I.
- 1:23Never worked with her because I had already left and she was my
- 1:26replacement basically. Right.
- 1:28So, so we, we worked, I did not work with her directly in terms
- 1:32of, I mean, she is, she was part of Town Square Media, but, but
- 1:35she was in Yakima. So after I'd left Yakima, but
- 1:38she was teamed up. We, I, I, I mean, she was part
- 1:41of with Gunnar, your old morning show partner.
- 1:44And so they both luckily. So in our business, I'll just
- 1:49recap really super quick. You know, your career, I mean,
- 1:53to, to be successful, they, they, that you as an on air
- 1:56announcer would like to get to the biggest market you possibly
- 1:59can get to. Yeah.
- 2:00And so I always tell people it's not it's not a trick question is
- 2:03what's the number one radio market in America?
- 2:06Well, it's New York, right? And #2 second Los Angeles is
- 2:11going to be second. Chicago's going to be third.
- 2:15Dallas is fifth. Seattle is 13 or 14, depending
- 2:17on where Puerto Rico falls. It just depends.
- 2:20And so we saw two Co workers, or you know, at least Co workers of
- 2:24mine were former Co worker of yours.
- 2:26We saw them literally jump from Yakima, which is market 199 if
- 2:31lucky. It's I think it's now two O 6. 2
- 2:33something it is, I mean then I thought it was like 213.
- 2:37Yeah, it's it's down, it's down there.
- 2:38So they literally they literally hopscotched from markets 200,
- 2:44let's just say 200 all the way to market 15 in Phoenix.
- 2:48And so they were, they were doing the morning show And so
- 2:51basically. Unheard of.
- 2:52Yeah. And not to say that people can't
- 2:55make those leakage. Right.
- 2:56Yeah. But but it's a rare, it's a
- 2:58rarity in our business that you see that.
- 3:00So hang on, hang on. The dog pulled the cord.
- 3:11What's that? So I think I'm going to.
- 3:14That was Bodhi. So when they go underneath the
- 3:17desk, they pull all the cords and everything.
- 3:19It's like, guys, guys, yeah. I thought it was going to be an
- 3:24easy day today, not an easy day now.
- 3:27I think my, I think my lighting's messed up from where
- 3:29it was. So anyway, jumping from 200 to
- 3:3415 is AB absolutely phenomenal. It really is.
- 3:38It's. Possible, but it's rare.
- 3:41It's rare but it but it but it is a big deal because and they
- 3:44got to jump together as a team. Yes, which is even rarer I
- 3:48think. Yeah.
- 3:49So it's like so and and and so it was it was it is it is it is
- 3:54a big deal when you make that kind of a jump.
- 3:56You even get into the trades. They call it leap of the week,
- 4:00you know, when something like that happens.
- 4:02And so anyway, they were doing mornings in in Phoenix together
- 4:06market and it's market 15 good sized market.
- 4:08So think Seattle size and Gunnar left, I think what a year and a
- 4:13half ago, maybe two years ago or about a year and a half, you
- 4:16know, now they had she had renewed her contract.
- 4:19So, so you're at that level where you actually get a
- 4:21contract or can have a contract. And so she renewed it and it
- 4:27ended up getting a new morning show partner.
- 4:29So I think Gunner left at the end of 24.
- 4:33You know, he said he stepped away, blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 4:35blah, blah. So she and and and to me right
- 4:37then you're usually like in a morning show.
- 4:40Usually if you're the Co host, guess what happens to you.
- 4:43You're gone. You're out too.
- 4:45So it's like so they're like, oh, Rick's Rick's stepping back
- 4:47for the morning show. You know, what does that mean
- 4:49for Michelle? Sorry, Michelle, you're out.
- 4:52So but but obvious obviously give give the powers it be.
- 4:56They liked her enough that they that they kept her and she even
- 5:00and they even said and at signing into this contract.
- 5:03Well, out of the blue yesterday she posted, Hey, my time is
- 5:06coming to the end. Now Odyssey, I want to say they
- 5:10filed for bankruptcy. So they've been they've been
- 5:13cutting, they've been cutting staff.
- 5:15It's not just her, but it's but it's been a downsizing.
- 5:19I heart's cutting staff, Odyssey's cutting staff.
- 5:22My own company, Town Square Media is cutting staff.
- 5:24Everybody's, everybody's cutting staff.
- 5:26But it was interesting that a couple weeks ago I saw that
- 5:29their afternoon person at that station was out.
- 5:32And so you're like, so you're like, OK, well, she's going to
- 5:34be safe. And then and then she posted
- 5:37today or yesterday that that her time had come to an end.
- 5:40So she'd been there for longevity wise six years, that's
- 5:44pretty good run. Yeah, that's a.
- 5:46Real good run. That's a great that's.
- 5:48A great run at at market 15. It really is so now and she's
- 5:53young enough. So this is what I I I throw out
- 5:55there. This is the turning point.
- 5:57So she's I don't know I don't say her age, but I think she's
- 6:0030 something middle 30s probably right.
- 6:03So this is the time where you in in our career where you have to
- 6:08make a decision like, am I going to continue radio?
- 6:12Which means as she's getting her very first taste of up and down
- 6:15the dial, right? Because because a lot of times
- 6:19your decision to leave a radio station is not your decision.
- 6:22No. 90, let's say 90% of the time, 90% of the time they're
- 6:28making the decision, they're making the decision for you.
- 6:30So and and so anyway, I'll be curious to see, OK, does she
- 6:36stick around and go to a major market?
- 6:38Can can because remember she went there with her Co host.
- 6:42Right. So now she has to stand on her
- 6:44own. Right, she had a different Co
- 6:47host. Right and and when they applied
- 6:49for let's say that Phoenix job, he applied right as a team, yes
- 6:55and then she was brought along, you know, on the adventure.
- 6:58And of course she had to make the she had to make the hoops
- 7:00and do the right things to be there and then and and then to
- 7:03survive after him as well. I mean, it is based on merit and
- 7:07obviously, you know, she does have merit because she survived
- 7:10a year and a half after he after he'd gone.
- 7:14So, but this is the crossroads is do you go up and down the
- 7:19dial like this means this could mean going forward means you're
- 7:22moving your family, you know, every couple years.
- 7:26If this is going to be the life that that you want and that
- 7:31that's the sacrifice you have to make, you know, or, and she's
- 7:35from Yakima. So that's why that kind of makes
- 7:36it poignant or, or is she going to go back to to Yakima and and
- 7:41do other things? She was very fortunate in our
- 7:44business. She was doing radio for what, a
- 7:45year and a half? Yeah.
- 7:48So, so Gunner, I mean, Gunner discovered her at the gym and
- 7:52and a great personality, great personality.
- 7:55But a lot of people in our industry would be upset that
- 7:58someone literally made a leap of the week without no I'm.
- 8:04Without putting in their dues and their time for.
- 8:06For for, for old radio people, right?
- 8:09Old radio people like we had discussed, you got to move
- 8:11around the clock. You know, you started
- 8:13overnights, you go nights, you go midnight.
- 8:15I mean, but times have changed, right?
- 8:18Where they just put you in morning drive.
- 8:19Yeah, that hasn't been around for what, 1520 years that we put
- 8:24in our dues. Right now.
- 8:26Now they just put you in morning drive.
- 8:28Right. You could be a YouTube and
- 8:29they'll be like, OK, yeah, you're hired.
- 8:31Yeah. So we so we've got several
- 8:33people in our own company that that absolutely 100% was like
- 8:36ones that one was an actress, you know, she was an actress.
- 8:39And and so one up in Nashville with our one product Taste of
- 8:44Country Nights or one of the OR one of our morning shows.
- 8:46She was a musician. So she'd never done radio and
- 8:50she's a, you know, a working musician.
- 8:53So that experiment didn't work out.
- 8:56It it's hard to come into our industry and not be part of our
- 8:59industry and then maintain that. A lot of people and I and I
- 9:04always try to explain to people you are being judged on your
- 9:07personality. Yes.
- 9:10Just plain and simple, it's not, hey, it's not.
- 9:13Did Michelle do a good job today and did what all the things that
- 9:16were asked? It's like somebody like in the
- 9:18sales department goes, yeah, I don't like Michelle.
- 9:20Again. She's AB word.
- 9:22I don't want to work with her. Well, then that gets up to the
- 9:24gentleman who's like, well, maybe we should get rid of that
- 9:25person. Let's just you know, or
- 9:27whatever. So there's so many components
- 9:30that go in to just surviving. I was thinking about it just
- 9:36surviving. So she's I just want to bring it
- 9:39up. She's at that crossroads.
- 9:41So I'll be curious. I'm going to be watching her
- 9:42career now. On the now, on the the, the flip
- 9:45side, the good side is, well, she was in contact with all the
- 9:48record reps, so they're going to know of possible openings.
- 9:52Maybe other people from other companies at that level will
- 9:57approach her. But right now we're going
- 9:59through a real tough time where they're getting rid of hard to
- 10:03come by. Right.
- 10:04They're not hiring. They're getting rid of people.
- 10:07Yeah. Well, and, and I think, and what
- 10:10I think what frustrates me most about it is so let's say, you
- 10:14know, Yakima, tri-cities, they're no longer rated, so it
- 10:18doesn't matter anymore. But back in the day, you lived
- 10:20and died by the numbers. Yes, you did.
- 10:23So, so, so from a so for me, I look at it like now, now
- 10:27Phoenix, of course it's absolutely rated and it's and
- 10:29it's continuous rated. It's 4 * a year.
- 10:31You're rated non-stop. So what's crazy about that is
- 10:36everybody wants a quick fix on any situation.
- 10:39So let's say, and I don't, I, I saw their numbers, or at least
- 10:43they're 12 plus numbers. It I mean it, it's not like it's
- 10:46where it always has been. It's not like it went, you know,
- 10:50now we can't. And it didn't go.
- 10:52Up No. We just stagnant basically.
- 10:54Well, well, there's two big stations in in Phoenix.
- 10:57There's KNIX, which is the old Buck Owens that used to be owned
- 11:00by Buck Owens. And that's I hearts.
- 11:02And then you have and then you have KMLKMLE, which is camel
- 11:06country, which is another great big country stations.
- 11:09They have the two big country stations.
- 11:10They always go back and forth. They switch spots in the
- 11:13ratings, kind of like KXTD and the bull back in the day, you
- 11:17know, so, so The thing is sadly like, OK, So what are what are
- 11:22they looking for? So let's say they bring in
- 11:23somebody who's brand new. You're she she already has six
- 11:27years of of currency or or credit credibility.
- 11:32Recognition. Everybody knows her in the
- 11:34market. Exactly.
- 11:36So when I, when I think about, you know, when you just shove
- 11:39somebody brand new on a radio product, it's like and then
- 11:42expect an instant turn around. It doesn't work like that.
- 11:46No. Because it takes it could take
- 11:48years for that next person to get up to, you know, So if so,
- 11:52if the person has done nothing wrong, it's sad that why would
- 11:57you not want to stick with that currency or why you know they
- 11:59they already have, right? And, and being on the radio, a
- 12:04lot of the listeners like they feel like you are their friend,
- 12:08like you are their friend. And so she's already established
- 12:11that. And when you bring somebody new
- 12:13in, like sure, the, you know, the shiny new thing, everybody
- 12:16kind of usually turns to listen to the new whatever it is, the
- 12:20new station, the new whatever. But that only lasts maybe a few
- 12:25weeks, if that. And then usually they revert
- 12:27back to what they know and love. So, so yeah, it doesn't make any
- 12:31sense if like they're her ratings haven't dropped.
- 12:33Like why get rid of somebody who is established in the market?
- 12:38Well, her partner is still there, so it may be so.
- 12:41So no, it may be a solo. So that's one of that's one way
- 12:44around what they do is when they're doing budget cuts like
- 12:48that, it's like, OK, you're just a solo.
- 12:50You're just a solo person in the morning.
- 12:51But why not keep her and cut him?
- 12:54Well I don't know the inner workings but she's been the Co
- 12:58host. But she was there when they let
- 13:01go of Gunner by herself, right? No, she was not.
- 13:05They paired her with somebody. And then they brought in the new
- 13:08guy. So so they they paired her with
- 13:11the afternoon per guy so there was never a break where she ran
- 13:16the board. Like she like ran with the show
- 13:20herself basically is what you're saying.
- 13:22No, they, they. So when Gunner left stepped
- 13:24back, the the guy in the afternoon was like right put
- 13:29right in right in place. So so I don't know any more than
- 13:33that in that particular situation and you'll be in now.
- 13:36Now you're uniquely qualified because you've done a solo show
- 13:42and you've done A and you've done a Co host show.
- 13:44Right. So I mean, does that?
- 13:46I think that makes a little bit of difference too.
- 13:48Right, which doing your show just the Co host is hard right,
- 13:54but and then being the Co host, even if you've already like
- 13:58stood on your own, you know, having your own show, you're
- 14:01still always just looked at as the Co host, no matter what, no
- 14:06matter how good you are or you know the.
- 14:09Fact that you've. Had your own show for years and
- 14:12established. And we're helping the.
- 14:13Market. Yeah, and when they made the
- 14:15shift, of course, her name was still second.
- 14:19So even though, you know, and I, and I've often, it was so funny
- 14:22many years ago, I think I've already told this story a long
- 14:24time ago about Tom and I Tom was there when I got there, you
- 14:28know, and they brought me in to drive the morning show.
- 14:32And I remember the consultant asking me, he goes, why did, why
- 14:35wasn't it? Why didn't you call the show Tom
- 14:37and Rick instead of Rick and Tom?
- 14:39And I said Rick and Tom sounds better.
- 14:44I mean, it does. Might have been my arrogancy at
- 14:4628 years old. Twenty.
- 14:48I was 28 at that time. Guess what I said.
- 14:50I said Rick and Tom sounds better than Tom and Rick does it
- 14:53not? No, you're right.
- 14:55But then when we were all doing mornings, you were fine with
- 14:59your name not being first. You were like, Oh, yeah.
- 15:02I don't care but work. Oh, I know.
- 15:04But when we were all discussing it.
- 15:06Oh, so now you're saying you were just trying to be?
- 15:08Nice. It's oh, so it's interesting.
- 15:11Every morning show I've done, as with partners, I'm always first.
- 15:15Not, but not because of me wanting to be first, no.
- 15:18It wasn't, I was going to say it wasn't really.
- 15:20It wasn't you. That was like, my name has to be
- 15:23first. You were just like, we'll call
- 15:25it whatever. You're, but it's the flow of
- 15:27usually it's, it's the flow of it, if that makes sense.
- 15:30Yeah, I just happen to have a name that kind of works better.
- 15:33It's a front. I mean, why do you think it's?
- 15:37AI know Rick, Rick, Rick. And that was right, Rick.
- 15:39Rick, we were, we were Rick and Michelle and Cephas or whatever
- 15:42with the morning bullpen with Rick and Michelle.
- 15:44Yeah. Right now it's Rick and Patty.
- 15:46I've been Rick and Tom. I've been Rick and John.
- 15:48I've been Rick and Amy in the morning.
- 15:49I mean, you know, all the all the years I've done mornings,
- 15:53but not because. You would have been, you would
- 15:55have been completely fine if it would have been Michelle and
- 15:57Rick. That was if it.
- 15:58Would have flowed good, and it would have.
- 16:01But I will. Because you always seem like you
- 16:03would be fine with that. So that's.
- 16:04Of course. Well, so so as I describe it to
- 16:07Patty, here's the deal. It's like, oh, oh, Rick and
- 16:10Stacy. I forgot about Rick and Stacy.
- 16:12So, so here's the deal. No Rick and Stacy with my Stacy.
- 16:16OK, I thought you missed the other.
- 16:17No. No, no, Stacy Lee that was here.
- 16:19She's the weather gal. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:21She's my part, my former Co partner that's on the TV news.
- 16:24You guys see her all the time. She's fantastic.
- 16:26Too many Stacy's and Stacy's and.
- 16:28But but interesting. So in terms of running the
- 16:32board, I always run the board. Yes.
- 16:36So, so what's funny? So when I first got there on day
- 16:38one with Tom back in the day and it was my first time ever doing
- 16:42mornings on day one, Tom ran the board on day 2.
- 16:46I, I go, I'm running the board. Not it wasn't.
- 16:50It's just because I, I like to, I like to drive it.
- 16:54And So what I tell So what I told Patty or what I've told
- 16:56Patty or Stacey even knows, Hey, I will set the table.
- 16:59Let me set the table. You can talk the entire thing,
- 17:02even though I know our listeners will disagree.
- 17:04Right. Or you'll you you can't not yes.
- 17:08You can, you can, you can do the entire break.
- 17:10I don't care. So you've got a less you've got
- 17:12to let let me set up the the the table.
- 17:14So I've got to go, you know, it's, you know, number one for
- 17:18new country, 102.7 KOD. It's Rick and Patty in the
- 17:21morning, 732 sunshine right now, 55°.
- 17:24Hey, we've been talking about this.
- 17:27Now you can jump on in and I don't care if you go the entire
- 17:31break and we go, all right, well, it's Rick and Patty, 7:30.
- 17:33Three, you're the closer. You're the opener and the
- 17:35closer. Exactly.
- 17:36So it's not that I have now, of course, I just actually who's.
- 17:42Sabotage and take over. Yeah, so, so when I look at my,
- 17:47our our friend, I don't know if I can say her name or not, but
- 17:50but I, but it's like there's choices to be made, if that
- 17:54makes sense. Yeah.
- 17:55And I'm and I'm just absolutely fascinated only because for me,
- 18:00for the most part, at this point in my career, I've been pretty
- 18:02isolated where I've been. I've been at the same company 17
- 18:05years. Babe.
- 18:07So I haven't had to look in the rate, I haven't had to look for
- 18:09a new radio job in a long in a long time.
- 18:13And but I know a lot of people who have and I know it and I
- 18:18know that they end up 99% or 90% time do something else.
- 18:22Right. They get out of the business one
- 18:24it doesn't pay shit like it never has and it currently
- 18:28doesn't. You know what, I guarantee even,
- 18:31you know, I don't know the inner workings of all of that when you
- 18:34get to. I mean, it's been a long time
- 18:36since I've been in market 13 in Seattle, right?
- 18:39But, and I know time, I know times have changed, but I still
- 18:42know that the pay for talent even at those levels, unless you
- 18:47are truly, you know, not. No, you're the number one.
- 18:51Yeah, you you're Rush Limbaugh or you're, you're Ryan Seacrest,
- 18:55you know what I'm saying? You're at that whole different
- 18:58level to where you quantitatively can prove that
- 19:01you are the money. You know what I'm saying?
- 19:03That's when you make the the 2 to $3,000,000, you know, a year
- 19:06or whatever that crazy number is it?
- 19:08It's possible. You bet it's possible.
- 19:10But 99.9, it's almost like being an actor.
- 19:13Someone once, someone once told me that radio people are poor
- 19:17man's movie stars. I love that person when he said
- 19:23that because it's just like being a part of AFTRA is 99.9%
- 19:28of working actors don't make what the 1% make.
- 19:32So when people are like. So when people are bitching
- 19:34about Tom Cruise or Jennifer Aniston, like what they have a
- 19:38union like this is bullshit. You know, they got they don't
- 19:42need more money. That's not who they're talking
- 19:44about. Right.
- 19:47They're talking about the 99% that are making bupkis basically
- 19:53doing. That.
- 19:53So and, and you do it because you love it.
- 19:55At the end of the day, we do it. We do the radio thing because we
- 19:59love it. So anyway, they don't want to
- 20:01spend too much time on it. I wanted just to say it's going
- 20:03to be fascinating. And I wanted to pull back the
- 20:05curtain for people to understand that it's like, you could be
- 20:10doing a great job and then you're out.
- 20:12Yeah. And then what do you do?
- 20:15Because you cannot. It's not like any job where she
- 20:18can just walk across the street anymore, right.
- 20:20Back in the day, you could walk across the street.
- 20:22Right. And they would take.
- 20:23You with open arms and be like, come on in, right you?
- 20:26You never know. You, you of all people know that
- 20:29back in back in your Yakima days because you worked at both
- 20:31sides. Yeah.
- 20:33You know, and so, and so I'll be curious down the road.
- 20:37I'm curious to watch your career, like, yeah, well, you
- 20:40know, and, and at that level, it'll be interesting because she
- 20:45gets to meet all the stars at that level, right?
- 20:48And you don't And when? You get booted down to small
- 20:52market again. You know you're not you're not
- 20:56the the cock of the walk, right? You know.
- 21:00So it's one of those things where it, it'll be curious to
- 21:03see where it where it goes. And I'm, I'm fascinated by it
- 21:06because I am really curious about myself, even curious about
- 21:09the state of radio and the, the job, the job search.
- 21:12So you want to keep us updated? So well, best of luck best.
- 21:15Of luck to that person. I want nothing but the best.
- 21:17I'm just looking at it from This is a crossroads.
- 21:21Yeah. And almost everybody I've ever
- 21:23come into contact, most of them get out of radio.
- 21:26Oh yeah. So especially.
- 21:28If you have a. Family and yeah, well, moving.
- 21:31Get used to it, you know? Yeah.
- 21:33I mean, I, I did send a little. I did send a little.
- 21:36Hey, I'm really sorry to hear that.
- 21:37And I wrote Welcome to radio. Because it's the truth.
- 21:40Because in this I'm not. And that's not to pick on her.
- 21:42I don't know her mindset. I just know in her mind that's
- 21:45the reality. Her reality.
- 21:47Is well, this is the way it all because she jumped from Yakima
- 21:50to Phoenix. She doesn't know any.
- 21:51Different. She doesn't know the whole ship.
- 21:54She doesn't. Know that you are, that you
- 21:58have. You're going to bounce from town
- 21:59to town, up and down the dial and you're making it going to
- 22:02make nothing. You know then.
- 22:06Then again, maybe, maybe they're an incredible star and they
- 22:11bounced to Dallas, they bounced to LA and they and they can and
- 22:15they can maintain it. I've got, I've got a friend who
- 22:17I met in 1998, yeah, 99. And she was working in Los
- 22:23Angeles. Her name is Laura Scott.
- 22:25Guess where she's still working in LA.
- 22:28Yeah, she's in LA. And she's the midday and she's
- 22:31the midday gal. And I took so and and we're and
- 22:33we're friends. So she's maintained 30 plus
- 22:36years now. She's jumped from station to
- 22:39station to station, you know, in LA.
- 22:43But she's there and I think and now she works at the Christian
- 22:46station there for Salem Broadcasting or whatever.
- 22:49So anyway, amazing talent. I mean, unbelievable.
- 22:52So and so, yeah, but but for her to stay at that level for so
- 22:56many years, right, it's crazy. Yeah.
- 23:01Which satellite? Radio.
- 23:02So I listen strictly to satellite radio and the hit
- 23:05station used to have Tony Fly and Simon in the afternoons, who
- 23:10I loved. I loved the two of them
- 23:11together. And then in the last week or
- 23:14two, Tony Fly is on. I think he's on like the like
- 23:182000 station now by himself, and then Simon's on by herself and
- 23:22now she goes by her real name, which is like Gabby Simon.
- 23:26And it's just not the same. It's not the same.
- 23:30And I don't like it. Well, it's the.
- 23:33It's the. It it's interesting enough not
- 23:36not so even from even from us doing a morning show, Rick and
- 23:38Michelle. It's the combination of the
- 23:41personalities that's not that really make it, you know, if
- 23:43you've got 2 very unique personalities, they make magic
- 23:47together. They just, they just do and, and
- 23:49you and you almost want that Ying and Yang.
- 23:52And so it's like I can already, I can already tell you my solo
- 23:55show and your solo show is not compared to what you're hearing
- 23:58on this podcast, right? No, you know, because you're 1
- 24:01individual. And so you've got to, you've got
- 24:03to do different things and, and you present, you actually
- 24:06present differently because you're because you're a solo
- 24:10person. And so I love, that's why I
- 24:13never thought I'd love mornings, but I'm, I love mornings because
- 24:16you do have that interaction with somebody, right?
- 24:18It's easier. Than trying to pull off a bit by
- 24:21yourself or talk about something by yourself and get phoners and
- 24:26yeah, yeah, it just it it just. It yeah so so this person who's
- 24:29in Phoenix their Co host is now solo and that will change the
- 24:34dynamics. Oh yeah.
- 24:36Of that morning show. Yeah, I don't, I don't.
- 24:38And I'd also, I also don't think because they're having cuts,
- 24:40that's this company that that she works for is having cuts.
- 24:43I don't think it's like they're going to suddenly put another
- 24:45person. No, they're having cuts unless
- 24:49unless they're solo. Right.
- 24:50Hiring somebody for peanuts 25,000 in their market or
- 24:54something? Well, you can't even you.
- 24:55Can't even, you can't even afford that anymore?
- 24:57No. No.
- 24:59OK, All right. Well, let's move on because I
- 25:01wanted to discuss AI and the whole Reese Witherspoon
- 25:06incident. Have you heard anything about
- 25:09this at all? I saw a little.
- 25:10Blurb about it that she's encouraging women to learn and
- 25:14adapt adopt AI tools citing data that women's jobs are three
- 25:18times more likely to be automated.
- 25:20So she's she's saying, hey guys, learn all you can about AI, use
- 25:24the tools because women's jobs just hate this person that just
- 25:27got to let go. Hello woman right the man, the
- 25:30man on the show get the man on the show didn't get let go right
- 25:33and. She's just, she's not saying
- 25:35like, oh, completely be dependent on it or anything.
- 25:38She's just like, it's a new you need to just know, you need to
- 25:41know and learn this for your own sake.
- 25:44And so yes, she's gotten a lot of backlash, which I completely
- 25:49get because people are worried about AI and especially in the
- 25:54the film, movie, any type of industry like that, that
- 25:58writing, even they're worried about AI taking over.
- 26:02So I get that. But she's not saying like just
- 26:05let's have it just completely take over.
- 26:07She's just saying like, Hey, you should learn this and be aware
- 26:11of this. And and that's that.
- 26:14She's not saying I wanted to completely take over the world
- 26:17or take jobs away. And even though it's taking away
- 26:19a lot of jobs, but it will get saying.
- 26:22Women. Women need to stay at the table,
- 26:24yes. And the more and the more.
- 26:25Tools that take women away from the table, the more likely women
- 26:29will not be at the table in conversations.
- 26:32And so that's a, that's a, that's a huge deal, right?
- 26:35But she's gotten. A lot of backlash over just and
- 26:39saying kind of embracing AI is not really technically embracing
- 26:44it. But yeah, she's gotten a lot of
- 26:45backlash over the whole AI thing and even even mentioning that
- 26:50you should be knowledgeable and get to learn it and blah blah
- 26:53blah. People are just just ripping her
- 26:57apart for that. And so I don't think that's
- 27:00necessarily fair. I think, yes, we should all be
- 27:02aware of AI. We should know what it can do
- 27:05and what it can't do. Which a few weeks ago it kept
- 27:10telling me that Chuck Norris and Robert Mueller were not dead
- 27:15when in fact they were dead. And I was literally arguing with
- 27:19it, telling it like, yes, yet. But remember that whole Chuck
- 27:23Norris dead hoax thing? And so it kept reverting to
- 27:27that. And I'm like, no, I, I would
- 27:29tell it like, they are dead. And finally, I think after like
- 27:343 or 4 times of me telling it like, yes, they are dead, it
- 27:38finally it got the little bubble where it's like searching the
- 27:41Internet and then it pops up like, Oh yeah, they are dead.
- 27:44And, and I was like, yeah, no shit.
- 27:47Like, well, again, if you like, if you get any information, any
- 27:52important information, you have to ask it for its site, its
- 27:56references and where it's, its sources, because it will lie to
- 28:00you. It will lie to you and it will
- 28:02tell you that it's lying to you. Well.
- 28:05But but that's being educated, that's being knowledgeable,
- 28:09right? A.
- 28:10Lot of people don't know that though.
- 28:11That's that's I. Feel like I, I feel like that's
- 28:13on them. You know, I remember, I remember
- 28:16I was doing a live broadcast and Patty sent me a text and she
- 28:19goes, she goes Willie Nelson died.
- 28:20I said he did not. And then I went online and there
- 28:24was nothing like, like TMZ usually is on top of it.
- 28:28There was nothing about Willie Nelson dying.
- 28:29So I sent a text back. I said it's not, it's nowhere.
- 28:33And then she goes, and then she goes, Oh my God, it's AI
- 28:35generated or something, you know?
- 28:37Now Michael J. Michael J Fox just had a hoax
- 28:39about him passing away. That that no, that made huge
- 28:42news. And Michael J Fox had to come
- 28:44out and say, Hey, I'm still alive, still here, guys.
- 28:46So but but you got it. I mean, I think AI serves its
- 28:50purpose. And I I'm I'm kind of on Reese
- 28:53Withers. OK, Well, even from anything and
- 28:55everything that we do, you can't, you can't ignore the
- 28:59impact of what AI can do, you know, and what it will progress.
- 29:04I mean, it will get even better. Well, you're not going to stop.
- 29:07It no. At the end of the day.
- 29:09At the end of the day, the wealthy will use whatever it
- 29:13takes to eliminate working bonds.
- 29:17That. At the end of the day, and it's
- 29:19gotten to the point to where what call centers are now going
- 29:22to be AI automated. I saw the most crazy thing.
- 29:26I think we discussed this. Did we not discuss this?
- 29:29They had AI Ashley in Portland. Yes, I think we've.
- 29:33Talked about because you've also mentioned the new program that
- 29:39you that you were like testing out or had a little demo about
- 29:42the people that were all access like the like the.
- 29:46AI. Radio, but right but there and
- 29:48I. Want to say the station is in
- 29:50you're going to laugh. I think it's in Phoenix, Yeah.
- 29:52We're we're just talking about or is it?
- 29:55Yeah, I think it's in Phoenix. Where is that?
- 29:57Where AI? Ashley was no AI Ashley.
- 29:59Was in Portland, OK. You know.
- 30:01But but here, OK, and I don't want to defend AI Ashley by any
- 30:05means because I don't think so. So what's crazy about AI?
- 30:08Yes, it'll get better. So AI Ashley now she's not on
- 30:11there anymore because it didn't work out for him.
- 30:13OK, so so so they actually had some of that did the show.
- 30:16Her name was Ashley. Now when Ashley wasn't
- 30:19available, she went by the name AI Ashley.
- 30:22So. So she would take over.
- 30:24Right, so AI. Ashley would take over and
- 30:26Ashley called this Taylor Swift winner and so AIAI Ashley called
- 30:31right so it can it can dial out it can call the listener and so
- 30:35she's talking to this listener AI Ashley is this listener is
- 30:39freaking out because she's won Taylor Swift tickets right right
- 30:42but the AI is so level monotone there's no excitement there's
- 30:48no. Emotion AI and robots can't
- 30:51replicate that emotion we as humans so even though.
- 30:55And so the question is, does the listener even care?
- 31:00No, not when they're. Winning Taylor Swift.
- 31:02She won Taylor Swift, so. She's happy but but she had no
- 31:05idea she was talking to a robot because.
- 31:08Because it. It did respond to the person
- 31:11talking. It was very.
- 31:14Very flat. Yeah, very flat.
- 31:16You know, like she's like, my God.
- 31:18And she goes like, thank you. And she goes you're, you know,
- 31:20like, you're welcome. Like, almost like
- 31:22congratulations. You're welcome.
- 31:24Almost like Hal. From 2010 Space Odyssey, you
- 31:27know, So yeah, so I'm with Reese in terms of OK, AI is not going
- 31:33away, no. So.
- 31:35So it's the. Same thing as when we started
- 31:36radio broadcasting. When I first got started in
- 31:38radio it was 2 turntables, a microphone, what looked like 8
- 31:42track players and vinyl records. Period there.
- 31:46Was no computer. There was no real.
- 31:48I mean, there was no computer. There was no computers.
- 31:51There was no automation, no nothing.
- 31:54And so as each of these have come along, I have learned that
- 31:57technology and and I and I remember he sadly passed away.
- 32:03Hutch, who one of my favorite people on the entire planet.
- 32:07This is many years ago but he literally said I will not voice
- 32:10track. Oh, because.
- 32:12It's not radio. So, so sadly, guess what
- 32:15happened to Hutch? He was gone.
- 32:18He got let go. Because no, because you have to.
- 32:23Learn and adapt, otherwise you die.
- 32:26Yeah, yeah. I mean.
- 32:27And and and and dying on that sword isn't worth it, right?
- 32:31Like like there's, there's no sword.
- 32:34I, I always say, what are you defending?
- 32:36What are you defending? I, I just want some people.
- 32:38It is. Though I mean, if that is what
- 32:40they like, if if that's their deal breaker, no, I'm not going
- 32:45to voice track. There was.
- 32:47When I was working in Yakima Cats, we had a program director
- 32:51that he would get monitored and he'd play, let's say a brand new
- 32:54song in morning drive. And the director of programming
- 32:56says, I don't want to hear that. I don't want to hear new songs
- 32:58in morning drive because morning drive is familiar songs, you
- 33:02know, blah, blah, blah. And he goes, we go, well, I go,
- 33:04well, I'm the program because, well, I'm the director of
- 33:06program. I'm telling you, don't play.
- 33:07He goes, he goes from midnight to five.
- 33:10You can play whatever the F you want.
- 33:11I don't care. So if you want to expose new
- 33:14music all five hours, I don't care.
- 33:16You know, and this program director is so arrogant that his
- 33:20refusal got him fired because no, it got him fired because
- 33:25it's like now any normal person would say, you know what, I am
- 33:28going to play my favorite songs midnight to five because he said
- 33:30so, right, midnight to five. But because he's so arrogant,
- 33:35no, I'm going to I'm going to play.
- 33:36This is what the this is what the audience wants.
- 33:38The director of programming said no, it's not.
- 33:42And now he no longer. Has a programming job and
- 33:45another guy that's out of radio. Shocker.
- 33:48Because he had. Done radio for a lot of years
- 33:51and this was kind of and he had a couple more places he ended up
- 33:54ended up going to in radio and finally he's just out for good
- 33:57because his brain can't connect with today.
- 34:03And I'm like. I'm like, man, that is not a
- 34:04sword you want to die on. He's like, you know, it's like,
- 34:07I don't, I don't take any pride in it.
- 34:09But if someone walked in tomorrow and said, hey, we're
- 34:11going to do ABC, guess what? You're doing it.
- 34:14We're doing AB and. C You know, self preservation is
- 34:18way more important than at this point in my life than oh, we
- 34:22have to play this song. What now?
- 34:26I learned that in Seattle in 1996, so I'm good.
- 34:29So you learned that a long time. Ago the heart You do you do you
- 34:32learn. That so it's one of those things
- 34:33where I don't know what storage you're dying on.
- 34:35So when it comes to again, Michelle, when it comes to AI,
- 34:38it's like I, I do think women need a voice.
- 34:40I think they need to be at the table.
- 34:42I use ChatGPT. Megan uses it.
- 34:46I, I, I'll write a letter and I'll put it through chat and
- 34:48say, hey, clean this up, Polish it up right or spell.
- 34:51Check it or whatever it there's so many.
- 34:53There's so many great uses as as long as you're using it right,
- 34:57yes, yeah. So.
- 34:58So I don't, yeah. So, and, and even from the
- 35:00artistic standpoint, you know, it's like which is that whole.
- 35:06Val Kilmer, he is AI generated for this upcoming movie.
- 35:11But before he died, he gave permission, like he wanted this
- 35:15to happen and he went to their union.
- 35:17Like you were talking about their union that they have.
- 35:20He went to their union and specifically got their
- 35:22permission. And they were like, yes.
- 35:25And so that is the right steps to use AI and to ask about using
- 35:31AI instead of these deep fakes and all that kind of stuff that
- 35:34keep popping up. Yeah, I think.
- 35:36I, I, I think as long as they've got permission, I know, I know
- 35:40that there's, you know what, what's really changed in the
- 35:43industry from the movie industry is where they would hire
- 35:46hundreds, hundreds of extras. Now they can just digitally put
- 35:50the extras in for AI. And it does, it does take, it
- 35:52does take jobs. It takes, it's sad it, it takes
- 35:56jobs away. And, but, but look at the coal
- 35:59industry. I mean, do you keep the coal
- 36:01industry running as harmful it is to the environment because
- 36:05it's 3000 jobs? I'm not.
- 36:07I mean they. Currently are trying to
- 36:08revitalize it. I get it but.
- 36:10But it's like, you know, but it but it's, it's because of
- 36:14nostalgia, right And not. Nostalgia, it's what's the, it's
- 36:20what's good for the environment. It's not good for the
- 36:23environment. It's good.
- 36:24It's not good for workers. And look at all the black lung
- 36:26that has happened to some of these workers and I, I.
- 36:30My biggest disagreement was I hate the fact more than anything
- 36:34else. Decisions are made, in my humble
- 36:37opinion, to take care of the 1%. Yeah, and that's exactly why.
- 36:42AI is to take is to replace wages because that's the number
- 36:46one cost for all these companies is wages and so if they can
- 36:50eliminate workers, then they're golden Well so a big.
- 36:53News for you guys out of Yakima is Khaimah moved out of your
- 36:59market, which is kind of television, It's the last that
- 37:02was there. Not to say that they don't have
- 37:03a, not to say they don't have one or two salespeople in the
- 37:06market, probably do and they have a couple.
- 37:08Reporters. But that's also what NBC and ABC
- 37:10have done for years. They only have reporters here,
- 37:14right? And that's.
- 37:14It that's it. And if there's a story, they're
- 37:16going to drive up from tri-cities and do it.
- 37:18So and so you, you shut down the facility, you sell the land.
- 37:22Yeah. You know, so we're.
- 37:24Seeing that in our my own industry where it's like, hey,
- 37:26there's going to come a day. I would not be shocked in the
- 37:28next 5 years that Yakima and tri-cities are technically the
- 37:33same group. Now, I don't know which one's
- 37:34going to win in terms of where the stations are actually going
- 37:37to be. But don't be shocked if it's one
- 37:39or the other. Don't be shocked, you know, And
- 37:43fewer bodies. Oh yeah.
- 37:46So there's barely. Anybody now?
- 37:47So yeah, there isn't there. Isn't so they'll be, they'll be
- 37:50like, let's say 10 radio station and two people there, right?
- 37:54Which is crazy. It is, but again, it benefits
- 37:57the stockholders or it benefits the, the the CEO on top.
- 38:01And so and so if you're fortunate, fortunate enough to
- 38:04survive, then hey, you're the lucky 1.
- 38:06But but Trump, but then also trying to hold on to something
- 38:10you're not, you're just not going to win the battle.
- 38:12You know I mean I. Already think it's ridiculous
- 38:15Disney just had massive layoffs with Marvel.
- 38:18That was a huge news news thing. Their their entire what CGI
- 38:23part? CGI department gone.
- 38:27Oh, was it I? Just knew they did layoffs, I
- 38:30didn't know what exactly. So Marvel movies.
- 38:32With all the CGI. So that obviously means they're
- 38:35outsourcing it to somewhere like India, wherever it's going,
- 38:38wherever it's going somewhere. Cheaper, yeah, you know.
- 38:41And then again and, and but again, it's because those people
- 38:44live in LA and so that means I got to pay somebody $150,000
- 38:48even to survive in LA. And so it's just, it's just
- 38:54crazy. I mean, but yeah, so I'm with
- 38:58Reese. I understand what they're
- 38:59saying. I think if you get permission,
- 39:00that's the only, that's the only way around it.
- 39:02I don't. I just think the audience at the
- 39:05end of the day doesn't care that I think.
- 39:07I think that's the problem with with anything and everything
- 39:09that we're encountering is the audience accepts it right for
- 39:15the. Majority.
- 39:16It doesn't affect their. Life, right?
- 39:19Yeah, so. I know.
- 39:21A lot of the younger, so Gen. Z, you know, Jackson and
- 39:25Shaylee's generation, alpha generation, they are kind of
- 39:29almost revolting against AI. It's kind of weird to me because
- 39:34I'm like, usually you guys are embracing all this kind of
- 39:37stuff, but they really seem to be completely against it in
- 39:40every wave shape and form, which is surprising to me.
- 39:43So I mean, not all of them, but it's going to get so.
- 39:47Good. You won't be able to tell.
- 39:49Oh yeah, it. Already is close, yeah.
- 39:51I'm saying give it 5, give it five years.
- 39:53Yeah. Now the the sad thing again is
- 39:55the normal people, 90% of them don't know the difference
- 40:00between AII mean they think this stuff's real.
- 40:02They just do, you know, they, they see it.
- 40:05They see, you know, Obama sitting down with the dictator,
- 40:07and they're like, Yep, that's real.
- 40:09Only because you want it to be real, but it's not real, you
- 40:11know, and I'll even flip it on the flip side, hey, I'm not a
- 40:13Donald Trump fan. I am not at all, period.
- 40:16I also disagree. I also disagree with this
- 40:19disparaging him as well with something that you know but with
- 40:22him more likely it's true, but right.
- 40:26You know, for the most part, he really said something.
- 40:28Yeah, Absolutely. Yeah.
- 40:30The good news with him, you don't need AI.
- 40:32He that that shit writes itself. He does it for you.
- 40:35Like every day I wake up going OK, what do you do today?
- 40:37OK, this can't be so so yeah, so it's it's crazy.
- 40:43And I also not to get political because we'll stay off.
- 40:45I also feel though, and I know you disagree, you disagree with
- 40:49me, you disagree with me. But I will say this, I think,
- 40:55I'm not saying there's not other crazy Republicans, but I'm
- 40:58saying that once Trump is out of office, I think the acceptance
- 41:03of another crazy Repub is, I don't think it's good or even a
- 41:07crazy Democrat. I think it's going to be a lot
- 41:10harder hill to climb, a lot harder of a hill to climb.
- 41:13I really have said this before, it is Trump who they follow, not
- 41:18the GOP, not the Republican Party.
- 41:20I don't know their rabidness. Their rabidness is towards Trump
- 41:25because if it wasn't, they wouldn't be losing a lot of
- 41:28these House races and all these different things that they're
- 41:30losing right now, right? But even Trump has come out and
- 41:34said, you know, he's midterms are coming.
- 41:36He's worried, but. I feel like it's that next
- 41:39person can step in and say the kind of not exactly be him, but
- 41:45say the kind of things and make them feel like them being racist
- 41:50and all that kind of make them feel good about themselves and
- 41:53all the hatred that they project.
- 41:56Then they will, they will be in, they won't.
- 41:58They eat that stuff up, I think. I think he is.
- 42:02I'm going to give him his due. I think he's unique.
- 42:04I think he's one-of-a-kind. I don't think Eric Junior.
- 42:09Or. Don Junior or whatever, I don't
- 42:10think any of them are even close to that level of you know what
- 42:15I'm saying? You can't, you can't do what he
- 42:18does. I mean, he I mean, give him his
- 42:20credit. It's fucked up, but give him his
- 42:22due. There is nobody like him.
- 42:24And I think that that's that same as Charles Manson, same as,
- 42:28you know, Jim Crow. What was it?
- 42:30Was it was it? Fingers crossed.
- 42:32No, it is fingers. Crossed because I look across
- 42:34right now, even on, you know, even on who's there, you know,
- 42:38and I'm like, I mean, there are people that are still cuckoo for
- 42:41Cocoa Puffs. There's still Robert Kennedy
- 42:43Junior and stuff, but they don't have, they don't have the the
- 42:50charisma for some. I don't now trust me, I'm not.
- 42:53I I, I, I don't like it, but I'm saying I don't think again, I
- 42:57don't think it's charisma. It's the fact that he gives
- 42:59everybody the OK to be racist and hateful.
- 43:03So you think JD Vance? You think JD Vance is just going
- 43:06to walk? I mean, I'm not just.
- 43:08Throwing. It out there?
- 43:09No, but. Maybe like a Marjorie Taylor
- 43:12Green, she kind of has them. I'm on her side.
- 43:14Right now. Well, yeah, I know.
- 43:16I never thought that day would come we would agree with her.
- 43:19She just put out a great Did you read her most recent?
- 43:22Was it about the? Assassination.
- 43:24Yes, all of that. There was a there was a good one
- 43:26today where she's like this, you guys are all being buffaloed and
- 43:29then let's just go. She is just going to town, which
- 43:32she's. Smart if she's going to get
- 43:34everyone under her umbrella, that's the way to do it so I got
- 43:39to give it to her but I hey but. I give her I give her I I
- 43:44appreciate her by the fact that she learned she she got her hand
- 43:51bit. She got her hand, bit.
- 43:53She she, she said she. Idolized the man, she worshipped
- 43:57the man. She kneeled before the man.
- 44:00She kneeled before the guy. And the minute that she said
- 44:03something that he did not like, it was an instant detachment.
- 44:08And you're a piece of shit right now.
- 44:10He's going off about what? Oh my gosh.
- 44:12Carlson. Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens.
- 44:15I mean huge. I'm surprised he hasn't.
- 44:17Laura Ingraham. I was surprised he hasn't
- 44:19attacked that which I just saw. Tucker was like, yeah, I regret
- 44:23this is like just yesterday. He regrets everything for Trump.
- 44:27And, and it's hard because I, we have people in the Democratic
- 44:31Party that are like, you know, oh, we should embrace these
- 44:33people. We should blah, blah, blah,
- 44:35blah, blah. No.
- 44:35People. Oh, no.
- 44:36And it's like, no. We should not like just because
- 44:39they're saying this stuff doesn't mean that they didn't
- 44:42agree with most of what he had, you know, stood for.
- 44:46It's like, no, these people are not changing.
- 44:49They're still at the core people that we disagree with or don't
- 44:54like. They're still fundamentally not
- 44:57good people. I love the.
- 44:58Fact that Will Wheaton, Will Wheaton, who I love from Star
- 45:02Trek, right, was talking about Tucker Carlson and he was right
- 45:07underneath Tucker Carlson and Tucker Carlson was going off on
- 45:09Trump da da da and he just writes underneath it.
- 45:11He's like, don't forget he goes, he goes we we have not forgotten
- 45:16where you know, where your loyalties lie and just because
- 45:18you are blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 45:20And he goes so you and he literally goes so you can F off,
- 45:23you know? Yeah, yeah.
- 45:25So. Anyway, she writes, yeah, so the
- 45:27debt goes higher, you know, this list goes on.
- 45:30She has a great hey, give her credit, man.
- 45:33I'm not saying I I'm not voting for her, but but I am liking, I
- 45:36am liking the splintering of MAGA for sure.
- 45:39I'm here with the popcorn, Michael Jackson and the popcorn.
- 45:42I know me. Too.
- 45:43Which are you going to go see? Michael Jackson I don't know.
- 45:46I probably won't go to the. Theater.
- 45:48I'll probably wait until I can watch it at home so well the.
- 45:53Rotten tomato score is out and it's not good.
- 45:57It's 34%. Yeah, so the.
- 46:01Yeah, so. Now there still needs to be
- 46:04more, more reviews on it, more reviews on it, but they said
- 46:09it's still not going to get to the fresh.
- 46:12So. Right now it's 32% with 85
- 46:15reviews. Wow.
- 46:17So. And what's interesting, I was
- 46:20watching some reviews about the movie is it is a great move.
- 46:24I mean, his nephew just crushes it as Michael Jackson.
- 46:27There's a young kid who crushes it at Michael.
- 46:29It is not that these, as the reviewers say, the people are
- 46:32incredibly talented, right? It's not the acting.
- 46:35No, it's none. Of that, what's interesting is
- 46:38it's a snapshot of Michael, but it does not dwell into any of is
- 46:44idiosyncrasies or any of the so the the executive producers are
- 46:49the is the Jackson family, his kids.
- 46:51Like, I know it's like Prince, he was like one of the executive
- 46:54producers because I saw a little piece about it, about how in the
- 46:57beginning they had some of the molestation stuff in it, and
- 47:02then they had to go back and recut all that out and they
- 47:05spent like 10 to $15 million having to recut it.
- 47:09I was like, damn. Yeah, they were talking the.
- 47:11Legality. So what what they had done, the
- 47:13original cut had its end with the start of the allegations and
- 47:18that was ending. And now they they've ended it
- 47:21with the bad tour, like like the end of the bad tour.
- 47:25And then and they even said legally and all these different
- 47:27things, what they were not allowed to do.
- 47:30So they reverse course on like you said, and spent 10 to 15,
- 47:32you know, reshot it, whatever they had to do.
- 47:35So they kind of had to, you know, so it's like it's it's a
- 47:39good biopic. I'm sure I haven't seen it, but
- 47:41I'm sure it's going to be amazing.
- 47:42It's going to have amazing dancing, amazing songs, you
- 47:45know, all the life story of Michael Jackson, but they're
- 47:48leaving out big chunks that you want to know about.
- 47:51Yes. Are you?
- 47:52Going to go see it in the theater or no I'll.
- 47:54I'll I'm not a you know me. I'm not a unless it's unless
- 47:57it's Richard Page of Mr. Misters biopic or you know.
- 48:01Superman or one of those kind of things, you know.
- 48:04I am fascinated by it, but, but I, I never saw the Elton John
- 48:07one or the Bohemian Rhapsody one and all that.
- 48:10I don't unless it's like somebody I really want that I'm
- 48:12interested in. I mean, I do remember VH ones
- 48:15behind the music, you know, those kind of things.
- 48:17I used to love all those things. I don't.
- 48:19I mean, for me on a biography, I just need an hour.
- 48:22I don't need 2 1/2 hours of no. You know, and not to say.
- 48:26That it's not going to be good, but man, it's already getting a
- 48:28whole if it's getting bad reviews.
- 48:30Yeah, that's crazy. That's not a good sign because.
- 48:32Bohemian Rhapsody got amazing reviews.
- 48:35Yeah. And, and I think, I think the
- 48:37reason now, I don't quote me, but I think the reason is
- 48:40because the Michael, the, the Jackson family is too close to
- 48:43it. Oh no, I think in terms in terms
- 48:47in terms because because for me, and I do have the movie, I
- 48:50absolutely love it. The movie this is It's.
- 48:54I own that one. With Michael Jackson, when he
- 48:56did his last tour with Orient, with Orienthy and man, it made
- 49:00me realize what how incredible Michael Jackson, I mean, there
- 49:04is. There's nobody like my
- 49:05performer. There's nobody like.
- 49:08Michael Jackson as a performer, like, no, his he is once again,
- 49:12I mean, once in a lifetime, once in a generation, when you see
- 49:16and even when you see him, even when he's rehearsing and not
- 49:20full Michael Jackson, you're like, Oh my God, he's a he's a
- 49:22genius. He's a genius.
- 49:25So I enjoy it. Did you ever see the movie This
- 49:27is it with Michael Jackson? Oh, love it, love it.
- 49:30Just a fantastic, you know, So to me, it's like I don't need to
- 49:33see another concert video. I mean, for us Gen.
- 49:38Xers, I think the music and stuff is reliving our youth.
- 49:42Like that would be the only reason a lot of us would go see
- 49:44it. Like you said, the music in it,
- 49:47especially if it's not going to be really truthful or dive into
- 49:51all the juicy stuff that we want to know about in his life.
- 49:54Well, I think there's a lot. I think there's a lot to unpack
- 49:56with with him as a person and I and they don't unpack it.
- 49:58It's not that. And they do circle around it,
- 50:01touch on it, but. Not yeah, but it's really.
- 50:04You really want to get into this, you know, because that I,
- 50:08I am in, I am in the club that anything is possible.
- 50:15But I'd like to think that he did not do the things they say
- 50:17he did. And the reason why I, I'm in
- 50:19that club is I really do believe Peter Pan syndrome.
- 50:24I really believe oh 100%. That that.
- 50:27Because of his horrific childhood with his dad expecting
- 50:31and demanding perfection, it broke him.
- 50:33I do believe Michael Jackson was broken.
- 50:35I do believe that 100%. And so do I believe that he had
- 50:39a childlike mentality to where he would go, come on, kids, come
- 50:43on. You know, and that's, and I know
- 50:45that was the message he was trying to send.
- 50:47You know, Hey, Logan, Logan slept in our bed until he was,
- 50:51gosh, I think he was a toddler at least.
- 50:52You know, and people like don't, don't let your kids sleep in the
- 50:55bed. Now, I think Logan, oh gosh,
- 50:59until he was 4. So I don't know how.
- 51:01I mean, we had a big king size bed.
- 51:03It wasn't like tiny bed. So we had the dog, we had the
- 51:07cat, we had Logan in the bed. And I know a lot that their kids
- 51:10sleep with him. Until they're 8 to 12 years old,
- 51:12right? Yeah.
- 51:13Yeah. So I mean, so so to me, it's
- 51:16like I'm going to I'm going to take the Michael side of it.
- 51:19That that I do believe that that number 1, he had broke the wrong
- 51:24people around him. He was very well known for if
- 51:28people, if kids were sick, they, you know, they could Neverland,
- 51:32I mean the list goes on and on. So, so and you know, he was
- 51:36never convicted so. Right.
- 51:39But he was. Never convicted beyond a, beyond
- 51:41a shadow of a doubt. And to me, that's the, that's
- 51:44the, that's the proof in the pudding for me.
- 51:46Beyond a shadow of a doubt. We've talked about this.
- 51:48Before where I've said as a parent, you know, the first
- 51:52allegations just kind they settled, they he paid, he paid
- 51:58them off. And as a parent, right.
- 52:00And as a parent, it would be, I don't give a fuck how much money
- 52:04you're giving me. Like I want like you want this
- 52:07to stop for for one, like you don't want him to keep on doing
- 52:11this, but you want some kind of justice for your own children.
- 52:16It would not be monetary justice that I would want.
- 52:19I would I would not care about that money.
- 52:21And so for me, that's really hard to reconcile as a parent.
- 52:25Like, like, something smells a little bit fishy with this
- 52:29because me as a parent, I would not take the money.
- 52:32And so I'm kind of like, I don't think these parents were on the
- 52:36up and up. Like, yeah, like, yeah, they're
- 52:38probably lying. Whatever it was.
- 52:41Macaulay Culkin. Macaulay Culkin, Corey Feldman,
- 52:45right? I mean, the list goes on and on.
- 52:46Who knew? Slept over at his play.
- 52:49The list goes on. Corey Feldman.
- 52:51Like been waffling back and forth like didn't he recently
- 52:54say like oh something not that I'm aware of.
- 52:56He he has said he was he was raped by other executives.
- 53:00Oh, maybe not. Corey, I meant Corey.
- 53:02Haim was yes, Yes he is. He's been very vocal about
- 53:06sexual abuse. But not with Michael, OK?
- 53:09Not. With Michael, I've heard.
- 53:10No, no, I, No, I Not with Michael.
- 53:12I'll I'll have to go research it again, but not with Michael, but
- 53:16other executives Absolutely 100% said he was abused and taken
- 53:19advantage of it as a child. I believe that.
- 53:21Yeah, but but. Macaulay Culkin.
- 53:23He's well, Macaulay is the God godfather of the children,
- 53:27right? Yeah.
- 53:28You know. So, so it's, it's, it's just
- 53:32hard for me to, to wrap my head around it.
- 53:35Many years ago, many years ago in high school, I had my
- 53:38favorite teacher of all time got accused of sexual assaults or
- 53:43you know, and the accuser, we all knew who the accuser was.
- 53:47Now, this teacher when I went to school was incredibly popular.
- 53:50I mean, and again, do not, do not burn me at the stake for
- 53:56what I'm going to say here. He was incredibly popular as a
- 53:59teacher. He was high fiving the jocks.
- 54:01The cheerleaders loved him. I mean, he was an incredibly
- 54:04popular teacher. And so the accusation came from
- 54:08somebody that right. And so, and he, we work
- 54:15actually, he went to work at Pepsi years later.
- 54:17We he was my idol. So we actually worked at radio
- 54:20for like a blip. He was on the radio, He did the
- 54:23morning show at the station I was working at for a blip.
- 54:25He was, he was my, he was my communications teacher.
- 54:27He was my speech teacher in high school.
- 54:29So I'm a huge like my mannerisms come from him, that the way I
- 54:33act on the radio come from him. So I'm I'm just a fan and, and
- 54:38to me, I've never been able to reconcile.
- 54:40No charges were ever filed. But but he no, but he was not a
- 54:44teacher anymore, right? He wouldn't be able to.
- 54:45Teach, right? Yeah, I don't know, but.
- 54:47But there was never a lawsuit. He was never nothing happened.
- 54:50So not even like. Civil like nothing.
- 54:54Nothing. He just, he just did not come
- 54:56back to school. He did not come back to school.
- 54:59Now the girl that made the accusation basically got chased
- 55:03out of school too. She did, you know, and so, but
- 55:08my my struggle with it was I know the family.
- 55:12I know this person that that made the accusation.
- 55:14She it's it's like my sister Lisa, who I don't I, I, I don't
- 55:20believe my sister. The shit my sister, the shit my
- 55:23sister says. I can't believe.
- 55:27Her whole life. Has been nothing but that.
- 55:31Nothing but. That So how do you reconcile the
- 55:35truth of what could have happened?
- 55:38Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it didn't happen right it
- 55:40very well. Could have been true, but how do
- 55:43you? Reconcile that with all the
- 55:45facts that you've got when a person has A and I, hey, I've
- 55:49always been in the same boat. Believe the woman always.
- 55:51I mean, I've always been in that boat.
- 55:53I've always been in that boat. Believe the child, believe the
- 55:56woman. What people are nefarious.
- 56:01People have their reasons for doing what they do.
- 56:03So you cannot 100% say every single time.
- 56:07Yeah, and for the Michael? Jackson thing, it's like, yeah,
- 56:09they walked away with 20 million.
- 56:11Yeah. What were those?
- 56:12Parents thinking and after you have your own children, then
- 56:15it's even more clear you're like what in the world and.
- 56:19Why? And the story's gone back and
- 56:20forth between those people. They've also said they've
- 56:25they've waffled on the story. They're like, you know, so, so
- 56:28yes, I'm, I'm in the boat. You are.
- 56:30Someone molested my child. Well, number one, they probably
- 56:34did. I was going to say we'd
- 56:34probably. Kill him ourselves and then we
- 56:37would go to jail. But yes, we're going to.
- 56:39Jail for murder and we won't get convicted on it because we took
- 56:41him, took the SOB out. So yes, I struggle so I struggle
- 56:45with that. So I just think the Michael
- 56:46movie doesn't dwell enough into right all the juicy.
- 56:50Stuff we want to know about Well, just the broke you.
- 56:52Know, I really believe Michael Jackson, as brilliant brilliant
- 56:55as he was like most artists was, was broken by his father well
- 57:00and most. Artists are weird, like all the
- 57:03artists that we've had a chance to meet or be around, They're
- 57:06eccentric, weird people just at who they are.
- 57:11That's just I think. That's just what.
- 57:13Makes them talented and artsy and I think the more brilliant
- 57:17the. More brilliant they are, the
- 57:19more they're more like weird. Well, we must not.
- 57:26I don't know how, I don't know how brilliant or talented we
- 57:30are. So I I don't know where we lie
- 57:33in that on a. Scale of 1 to 10A1.
- 57:38That's it for. Today's episode of Rick and That
- 57:41Michelle, Check. Thanks for hanging out with us.
