- 2:47I think it is and what Woody will join us talking about that. Plus
- 2:50your good friend Milly Snyder from the Shape Shop is here as well. A
- 2:52couple of quick news headlines and need to get to before we get to Millie,
- 2:54she's eagerly anticipating her appearance here on the show, and all of these
- 2:59stories can be found atwv metronews dot com. Federal judge has approved a two
- 3:01million dollars settlement after a man died in the custody of Dunbar police. Judge
- 3:07Ireenberger approved that settle but yesterday. All has to do with a guy named
- 3:10Michael Scott Junior in the suit that was brought against the city of Dunbar and
- 3:15the officers in the case. Both officers are still employed there, mainly because
- 3:20this was not a criminal case and either officer has been charged with a crime
- 3:24again. The story can be found in its entiretywv metronews dot com. Speaking
- 3:28of police former Chapmanville police officer who lived in South Charleston, Marcus Dudley,
- 3:32has been arrested in Georgia. All has to do with the disappearance of the
- 3:36police dog Chase. Dudley was due in court last week, but no showed
- 3:39when he said he had no transportation from wherever he was was in Georgia and
- 3:45his father's house is where they nabbed him, which is where he's originally from.
- 3:49Marcus Dudley is now he'll come back to West Virginia at some point.
- 3:52Facing a six count indictment in the case storywv Metronews dot com. And finally,
- 3:57Bob Huggins now on what's called a non reporting probation after entering a diversion
- 4:02program in Pennsylvania. Following is a DUI in Pittsburgh in June. We'll have
- 4:08more on that again. You can read it all. I want to make
- 4:10sure I get those headlines out there wv metro news dot com. All right,
- 4:14Millie Snyder, our good friend from the Shape Shop, how are you
- 4:15doing? Honey, good morning to you. I didn't know you're gonna sing.
- 4:19Oh, yes, you didn't know that. Well, I know you
- 4:21can. I don't carry a recording around atally can sing? You can?
- 4:26Yeah, you're you're not lipsing. By the way, I want to throw
- 4:28this out here too. Happy birthday to Danny Jones. Former birthday Jones,
- 4:31former mayor of Charleston, former host of this radio show, Sheriff House adela
- 4:36gets member. He's done pretty much everything, but Danny my man is celebrating
- 4:41the birthday today. So let's give Danny Jones a big shout out and happy
- 4:45birthday anymore. And if he comes, if he comes by the Shape Shop,
- 4:48he'll get a free cake. Is that right, Well, my kind
- 4:50of cake, this kind of cake, all right, because my kind of
- 4:55cake actually is better for you, okay, because it isn't made with real
- 4:58sugar, but it is sweet as you would like. Indee, all right,
- 5:01as are you? Thank you so much? All right? You are
- 5:06a man of great knowledge, A man of great knowledge. And say,
- 5:12all right, so you got some stuff you said. I've got a lot
- 5:15of information to share with people, So share away, darling. Yes,
- 5:17and you know the thing that I want to share, and I also want
- 5:20to make it available to anyone who will call in with their their name and
- 5:27their address and send me a stamped envelope. I want to send people the
- 5:31information about what is and what is not processed foods. Okay, it's time
- 5:38that we knew what we are doing on a daily basis. And I have
- 5:44it in my hand. Then I have another piece in my hand. But
- 5:48I would love to share this information, okay, because you know, teaching
- 5:54the Mediterranean lifestyle, I have learned so much, and of course I have
- 6:00forty seven years to my credit as part of Weight Watchers. But what I
- 6:05have learned since I began representing and living the Mediterranean lifestyle is absolutely only compared
- 6:15to like a truckload of information compared to what I used to be able to
- 6:19disseminate. And the more we know about the right kind of foods, the
- 6:25healthier we're going to become. And that's the point that I want to make.
- 6:30So I have this right here. It's called what art processed Foods,
- 6:35and I want to share it now. If people don't want to send me
- 6:39a stamped envelope with their return address, if they'll send me their email,
- 6:44I'll respond that way because I want as many people as possible to understand that
- 6:50by eating processed foods, we are killing ourselves very slowly. Yes, it
- 6:57tastes good. I know that's your argument, and it's always that you know
- 7:00power behind it. But this is the way my mother always cooked, and
- 7:04my mother learned from my aunt Mary and so on and so forth. But
- 7:10there's a better way, There's a healthier way. And if you don't have
- 7:15your health, where you're gonna go? Where are you going to get it?
- 7:18I mean, if you don't have your health, you don't really have
- 7:19anything in this life because nothing else matters. Family, money, job,
- 7:25nothing else matters. You can't get around comfortably, and you can't go to
- 7:29the movies and sit in a chair to be entertained because you can't get there.
- 7:34Okay, Anthony, were you we have a call for for MILLI is
- 7:39that right? My producer and I are on different pages here, I think,
- 7:43Oh okay, I'll be patient. Oh okay, it's not a call
- 7:46for me. Okay, I'm sorry, I miss I misunderheard. I totally
- 7:49misunderheard. Okay. My point is that I want people to understand that there
- 7:55is a pleather and that's a big word. Yes, it is pleather,
- 7:59or simply means a lot of information out there that can benefit people and the
- 8:05more that they know and they're willing to put into their life. And I'm
- 8:09not saying they have to do it in one fell swoop, but in small
- 8:13little bits and pieces because process food Dave is killing us and it's taking away
- 8:20whatever pieces we have left of health. And this is, you know something.
- 8:24I was actually having a discussion with one of our other producers on the
- 8:28show yesterday. We were yesterday I had on the show I had. I
- 8:33had a little discussion between the State Democratic Party chair uh Mike Pushkin Uh.
- 8:37It was also delegate and the State Republican Party co chair Tony Hodge, and
- 8:43great discussion. By the way, go back and listen to it. WV
- 8:45metri or story I WS my Facebook page, day hell on radio and Facebook
- 8:50and wc AGES networking social media as well and at the website wc its network
- 8:54dot com. But Tony came in with with some with some fudge as a
- 9:01gift form no judging because okay, all right, all right, so so
- 9:05all right, but but he asked ahead of time, he said, I'm
- 9:09going to bring some fudge for different people. Does anybody there have food allergies?
- 9:15And Tony and I were actually having this discussion where I'm a few years
- 9:18older than he is, but we were talking about this and saying, you
- 9:20know, years ago, food allergies weren't really that big of a thing.
- 9:24You didn't and now like for his kids, you know, they can't take
- 9:28peanut butter into schools. They can't take it, could never send something like
- 9:31that to school. And I say all that to say this, I'm getting
- 9:33somewhere with this, Melly, trust me, you can just continue to hang
- 9:37uh that. A lot of people say that one of the reasons why we
- 9:43suddenly are seeing all of these kids, and I'm not a doctor, I'm
- 9:48not a nutrition expert. That a lot of it has to do with with
- 9:52with processed food and that you didn't hear these things years ago, and now
- 9:58it's generational, you know, I mean it's you know, so is there
- 10:01anything have you read anything about that? Well, not per se in terms
- 10:05of allergies, but what I have learned is that there are some processed foods
- 10:11like you could count in days of weight watchers. You could count points for
- 10:16a hamburger and French fries. But the thing is, even if you counted
- 10:22the points for it, you could gain weight from it because it's not real
- 10:24food and it does things to your body. I think that some reasons that
- 10:31are hidden for allergies is there's other ingredients that are not dealing with the body
- 10:39correctly. Thus there is an allergen that comes out from that. And other
- 10:45people have said that as well. That's why I know. And there's also
- 10:48some new research where they're find they're helping young babies learn how to tolerate peanuts
- 10:54and consequently you know, peanut butter. But they're starting at a very young
- 11:00age when they're little infants, but they're beginning to address it. The point
- 11:05is you and I have a responsibility, as does each person who's listening,
- 11:09know what's in your food so that you can make an informed decision. Listen,
- 11:18I'm at my shape shop, yes, and I know you're going to
- 11:20ask me the address seven oh six Central Avenue. We're on the west side.
- 11:24We're very easy to find, plenty of for your parking. Yes,
- 11:28and also there's a Marquis and if you miss it, then you're not looking
- 11:31yea. But here's the point. There aren't very many places that go through
- 11:39what we do to make everything fresh. We make our soups from scratch.
- 11:45We roast our own turkey, we roast our own chicken, et cetera,
- 11:48et cetera. We don't buy somebody else's so that it's easy to cut.
- 11:52We roast it, we slice it, we make the wraps, the sandwiches,
- 11:58et cetera, the soups. But it's clean, fresh food, and
- 12:01that's what people need to find out about. We need to give that to
- 12:05our kids, especially as we're going to be giving lunches to our children.
- 12:11School opens up on Friday. Let's take responsibility for what we're packing in their
- 12:18lunch. I don't know what they're serving in the cafeterias, and of course
- 12:22there are a lot of kids, and I say this with sadness that that's
- 12:26the only food that they're going to get. But so much of it as
- 12:33ingredients in it that we can't you know, on some foods day there's ingredients
- 12:39that are preservatives and you can't even pronounce it. You might be a good
- 12:41reader, and you might have skill level for English composition, but you can't
- 12:48pronounce it. And that's when I say, please be aware, pay attention.
- 12:52And people have said if you can't, if you can't pronounce it,
- 12:54don't put it in your body. I mean, and we're doing it every
- 12:58sing couple of that is diet sodas. If you if you read what's in
- 13:03a diet soda, Yeah, that's definitely fog. How many people over the
- 13:09years, especially when I was the franchise owner for weight Watchers, would not
- 13:13drink water because they had instead eight diet cokes all day, so they said
- 13:20liquid is liquid, one is brown, one is white, And people would
- 13:24take me on for an argument, and sometimes it's not about winning the argument.
- 13:28You can only teach what people are willing to hear and then receive and
- 13:35do something about very very good place to end it. There. Shape Shop
- 13:39has got here. The Shape Shop is located. You've already given us address
- 13:43contact informations on Facebook. It's on all the social media. Give us the
- 13:46address again at seven oh six Central Avenue. And I do want to say
- 13:50that we are making grab and go fresh meals that are so fabulous that I
- 13:56mean like I watched them being put together yesterday, and I mean just watching
- 14:01them at my mouth waters, but my mouth didn't water over the food.
- 14:05Yes, I want to be sure, but I will happily send what processed
- 14:09foods are to anyone who will reach out to me. Contact Shape Shop w

- 17:12was operating in behalf of the bigger sugar lobby. The availability of sugary process
- 17:18foods is intentionally baked into the system. I don't think they met that as
- 17:22a pun and they said baked into the system. Tony Stroud with Marshall University
- 17:26joints it Tony, good morning, how are you sir? Good morning,

- 17:59you get all that on a business I try not to, so we it's
- 18:03a little bit easier for me to say I work for Brad Smith. You're
- 18:04Brad Smith's writing And we did have mister Smith schedule to be on the show
- 18:07today, but to do to a scheduling conflict, he was not able to
- 18:11attend. We'll get to Brad Smith on the show, uh here sometime in
- 18:15the foreseeable future. Overall, I'm give you a chance to suck up to
- 18:18the boss a little bit. Uh. What kind of job you think Brad
- 18:21Smith has done since taking over as the president of Marshall University. I think
- 18:25the President Smith has done an excellent job. You know. He came in
- 18:29in twenty twenty two with a vision and really I think went on and listening
- 18:33tour initially and now I remember that. Yeah, he just went from community
- 18:37to community, community. He pulled up microphone up a little bit there,
- 18:40a little trouble here there you go, went from community to community and talking
- 18:44to the people and the stakeholders at Marshall University, just asking what they thought
- 18:48we need to do, what's some issues they see and based on now we
- 18:52develop a plan and uh, you know, I think we have a very
- 18:53strong plan going forward into the future. At Marshall, we're trying to create
- 18:57a prosperity platform for us TODs. As you know, we still educate a
- 19:02lot of first generation students and we have a mission that we want to promote
- 19:07individual success, be a place where people come with innovative ideas and be a
- 19:11major player in economic development, not only in the region but in the entire
- 19:15state of West Virginia. Talking with Tony Stroud again from Marsha University. Big
- 19:19announcement Tony came last week. I guess it was about this new cybersecurity thing
- 19:25that you got to going on to Marshall talk about that. Yeah, we're
- 19:26very excited about that. And then just cannot be more appreescative of Governor Justice
- 19:30than the Westernia Legislature for their support, dedication and vision for this. I
- 19:34think that, you know, it speaks volumes of their ability to recognize the
- 19:41importance of cybersecurity as we enter into this new digital world that we're in today.
- 19:45Marshall was fortunately we have been appropriated forty five million dollars to build a
- 19:49new building in Huntington, West Virginia. This will be an eighty thousand square
- 19:55foot building that will house our cybersecurity Institute. It's going to have thirteen different
- 20:00labs in it for use in cybersecurity and primarily focused on critical infrastructure, as
- 20:06you know that's a concern in our entire country. So Marsh's recently named as
- 20:10a Center of Excellence in cybersecurity, the second one in the United States,
- 20:14the other being in Texas, San Antonio. So we think this brings a
- 20:17great opportunity cybersecurity jobs are tremendous demand of seven hundred and seventy five thousand jobs
- 20:23the last figure I saw. So we're going to be able to educate students
- 20:27and be able to put more people out of the workforce in this very exactly
- 20:30if somebody is a I know this is a very very blanket statement or question
- 20:34I should say, Tony, but if somebody is going to you know,
- 20:37major in cybersecurity or that's going to be their their course of study, what
- 20:41kind of jobs would they have as it relates to cybersecurity. Give us a
- 20:45couple of examples. Sure, there could be many different things. One could
- 20:48be working for the Department of Defense and helping, you know, look out
- 20:52on the web. You know, you hear about the dark web and trying
- 20:55to prevent ransomware attacks. You know, last year, I think we had
- 20:57a couple of our community colleges attacked by ransomware. So I saw last week
- 21:02a hospital system in three states that's sixteen affected hospitals. So it's monitoring the
- 21:06web, moniting you know, with a critical infrastructure, your power gridge,
- 21:11your your water supply, just seeing what kind of attacks may occur there.
- 21:15You know, I heard recently there's a quantum quantum cryptography or quantum computing three
- 21:22to five years before this goes live, and that will have the ability to
- 21:26break any encryption code available today. So a lot of work in this area.
- 21:32The different labs I mentioned, you know, they be the Internet of
- 21:34Things, which is you have a smart watch, a dishwash refrigerator that communicates
- 21:41through the web. It's open to potential cyber attacks. So all of those
- 21:45different things will be available in students will be taught how to monitor those and
- 21:48detect and try to throw it off these attacks before they occur. Now,
- 21:52where will the physical location be. It'll be on the corner of how Greer
- 21:57Boulevard and in sixteenth Street. There used to be a Hussin's Pizza there some
- 22:03nut but going back to our age, there was a double o ger older
- 22:06than I am dude only by a few months. Okay, but anyway,
- 22:11speaking of Husband's Pizza. By the way, Shameless Plug five any Live is
- 22:14presented part by Husbands Pizza. This month gets yourself a large at and Nich
- 22:17Pepperoni pizza in an order of cheese sticks only twenty one ninety nine for locations
- 22:21to place an order or for delivery, visit husbands Pizza dot com. So
- 22:23that's where it's going to be, and that's where it's going to be.
- 22:25And we did not playing that, folks. It was just happened to be
- 22:27the next one in the rotation here. So you know, there's so many
- 22:30different things going on in the world of higher education these days. And I've
- 22:34talked about this on the show My Generation, Your Generation, Generation, Classic
- 22:40Generation X people we were told you gotta go to college, you gotta go
- 22:42to college, and I went to a community college I've told the story before
- 22:45for a couple of years, and then transferred to Marshall University. And I
- 22:52think now we're getting to the point that maybe our universities and higher education in
- 22:57general in America are starting starting tony to get to the point now where they're
- 23:00saying, well, not every student learns the same not everybody necessarily needs to
- 23:06go off to a Marshall WVU state you see, or whatever, or maybe
- 23:11not even go study in the same way. And I think it's I think
- 23:15it's imperative. Uh. And you can weigh in on this. You're the
- 23:18expert on our universities to not just teach the same old thing, you know,
- 23:23to to work with the business communities more to say hey, what do
- 23:27you need? And that sounds like what when when we talked about Brad Smith
- 23:30becoming president of Marshall Tony, it sounds like that's what he did as he
- 23:34went to and he went out to the community and he said, Okay,
- 23:37let's go to a Toyota plant, let's go to to New Core whomever and
- 23:41say, okay, what is it that you need. Yeah, I think
- 23:45you're right, Dave. I know you know to what you said when you
- 23:47know, when I was in high school many many years ago, it was
- 23:49thought you got your high school diploma and you went on to get a four
- 23:52year degree or or more a college. And I think that's changed. Not
- 23:56everyone is seeking that now. And you know, I think you're right.
- 24:00We need do need to go to the employers and work back from the employer
- 24:03demand and see what they need. And I think what you're going to see
- 24:07into the future is more micro credentials. Perhaps. You know, we have
- 24:12this our vision at Marshall's Marshall for All, Marshall Forever, and you probably
- 24:18heard President Smith talk about our goal was by twenty thirty seven at every student
- 24:22who graduates from Marshall University will graduate debt free with one job placement. And
- 24:27you know, the Marshall Forever is the continuing education. What do you need
- 24:30to get to that next step? You know what? We were out on
- 24:34the West Coast meeting with some folks from Amazon recently and they talked a lot
- 24:37about you know a lot of people are switching to more skill based programs versus
- 24:41degree based and what do we need to do to get there? And I
- 24:45heard someone yesterday I was having a conversation with it says, you know,
- 24:48he thinks that we need to start replacing the terminology student with learner. And
- 24:53what do these new students of the future want to learn? Do they want
- 24:59just a certificate to be able to do coding in Python as we're moving into
- 25:03AI? Do they want a two year degree? Do they want a four
- 25:06year degree? So I think we've got to meet the students where they are
- 25:08and that's one of the things that we're trying to do at Marshall University with
- 25:11some of our new programs. Talking with Tony strut again to marsh University and
- 25:15Tony, I post a similar question when I had Eric Cage, President of
- 25:18State on a few weeks ago. There are a lot of problems we know
- 25:21with higher education in West Virginia. They've been well documented. We all know
- 25:25about the issues at at w VU, well documented there, and of course
- 25:30not nearly as bad as what's happening Alderson brought us where in effect that they
- 25:33had to going out of business sale. I mean, I'm not trying to
- 25:36make a light of it, but it is what it is. And there
- 25:40are other schools around America that are facing similar situations right now. What is
- 25:44Marshall doing to maybe try to help out their fellow institutions. Let me take
- 25:48the Alders and broadest situation. Eric Cage of State said that they had reached
- 25:52out to the students at AB and said, hey, come to State,
- 25:56we'll work with you on tuition and things of that nature. Or what's Marshall
- 26:00doing in every Yeah, it's very similar. We're doing the same thing.
- 26:03We actually have a meeting today with some folks in Walterston brought us and you
- 26:06know, that's an unfortunate situation that occurred there. But you know, at
- 26:08the end of the day, I think, you know, as we typically
- 26:11do in West Virginia, I've seen a lot of institutions reach out to Walterston
- 26:15brought us and you know, in West Virginia were known to rally around each
- 26:18other when things aren't going bad, and I think that that's happening here.
- 26:22Many of the universities and other institutions have stepped up. What can we do
- 26:25to help? You know, we've got to make sure we take care of
- 26:26those students, and that's every one's priority, is that we make sure these
- 26:30students were able to continue and we'd like to keep them all here in West
- 26:33Virginia to continue with their education. Hopefully that's what we can do, and
- 26:37that key part about keeping them in West Virginia, which leads me to one
- 26:41of our final questions. I want to get to here, what is Marshall
- 26:44doing when you have somebody that is, you know, approaching their senior year
- 26:47of college or or whether it a master's program, whatever it is that they're
- 26:51doing. What are you doing as the university to say, Okay, we
- 26:56got your education for you, whether you're here or whether you're from here or
- 26:59not. Don't go off to Columbus, don't go off to Charlotte, don't
- 27:03go off to Pittsburgh. Let's try to keep you in West Virginia. What
- 27:04kind of things are you able to do there to make you try to make
- 27:07sure that happens right, And that's the goal. He's trying to keep our
- 27:11our young people here, to keep our talent here in West Virginia. And
- 27:14I think with some of the announcements we've had recently with you know, with
- 27:17the new Corps, the form Energy, the Berkshire Hathaway, you know,
- 27:19the Cybersecurity Institute. You know, we think we're going to really be able
- 27:22to build up an ecosystem around that. So as you know, Dave that
- 27:26the key is to create jobs, and we've got to create good jobs that
- 27:29will keep our people here. So, you know, I think that's why
- 27:33we're trying to win on economic development. Love the collaboration we have going on
- 27:37with West Virginia University president and his staff have been tremendous to work with.
- 27:41We're doing a lot of projects together under the Universities United, which again I
- 27:47think that's you know, we're rallying around some of the issues in West Virginia.
- 27:51What can we do collectively in higher education. You know, doctor Cage
- 27:55has has been participating in events with us, so I think we're gonna have
- 27:59to rally together, continue to build our economy here in West Virginia, continue
- 28:02to add good pain jobs, and I think that will result in us keeping
- 28:04our students here in the state of West Virginia. Well, it's exciting time
- 28:07in the world of higher education and of course an exciting time in Honeyton because
- 28:11football season is getting ready to start. Here is waiting for football season it
- 28:15gets starting, you know, growing up in Huntington being a big Thundering Herd
- 28:18fan on on my life. I think we're going to have a good squad
- 28:21on the field this year and looking forward to it. We had in the
- 28:23neighborhood of about four hundred or so Marshall of fans out at the bill No
- 28:27Flight School last week at the airport that are just as excited as what we
- 28:33are about football season, and honey it's gonna be a great season for the
- 28:34Thundering Herd. It is, we think so. I think so, Tony.
- 28:37It's always pleasure talk to you, my friend. You're doing well.
- 28:40We're doing some great things down there. And give our regards to Brad Smith
- 28:44because again it's there's a lot of exciting things going on at marsh University so
- 28:48I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot for hand me on time.

- 32:22I had not heard that we'll look into it, but I had not heard
- 32:24that. I know that there's a whole lot of a little whole lot of
- 32:28housing and a whole lot of business stuff going up in that area right now,
- 32:30specifically down in Mason County. We're going to talk about housing with our
- 32:36good friend Marjorie Cook from Advantaged Valley coming up here in just a matter of
- 32:38moments. Texas, Dave, we have leaders of our state. That's the
- 32:42funding higher education and public education. It's so sad. We need to move
- 32:45forward and not backwards. This guy is always moving forward. My good friend
- 32:50Woody Woods for one of the seventh three to beat. How are you my
- 32:52friends up? Dave? Good morning brother. I look out the window out
- 32:55there, walk out into the green room, and I said, does anybody
- 32:59you're literally in the parking up putting your shirt on? Dude? You see
- 33:01me do that? Yes? I thought I had another everybody in Charleston saw
- 33:06you doing that. I thought I had a one on seventy three T shirt
- 33:08in my truck. But so I took my shirt off, like, man,
- 33:12I don't have a shirt in here. So it's all right, Man,
- 33:14I flashed the neighbors. It's it's it's not the first time. Yeah,
- 33:16it's definitely, it probably won't be the last. Let's talk about what
- 33:21we got going on. First of all, before we get to the backpack
- 33:22attack, I want to ask you how is things doing with the new frequency?
- 33:27Are we there? Baby? More people now can listen to the beat
- 33:30than ever because we moved up from from ninety eight seven to one on seven
- 33:34three. Talking about man moving up, it's a beautiful thing. We went
- 33:37from like one county to like seventeen counties. We actually got a radio station.
- 33:40Now you can hear You can hear us outside the east end and west
- 33:44side of Charleston, So it's a good thing. Get a lot of good
- 33:46vibes when I'm out, people talking about they get here is all the way
- 33:50to Kentucky. I haven't went that far yet, but I'm getting calls that
- 33:54they get here in Kentucky some parts. So that's I sent you a text
- 33:58a couple of weeks ago. I was in Clay County, nice and I
- 34:00was listened to right. It was just U list of one oh seventh three
- 34:05to beat Terry in Clay County. But what he does his best to try
- 34:07to to try to make me sound cool. Can I say we outside,
- 34:12we outside, We gotta you gotta hold it out like vin we outside.
- 34:17There you go there you go. It's that Logan County, LA, Logan
- 34:22Area, LA. In the building, baby, yeah exactly, we outside.
- 34:25So we're gonna be outside literally, yes, sir, tomorrow here at
- 34:29eleven eleven because time for the Todd Judy Motors Backpack Attack. Talk about the
- 34:32history of this event sixteen years, man, it seems like it just started
- 34:36yesterday. That the best thing about this Dave that you know sixteen years it
- 34:39was a child that was coming to get a backpack, probably going to kindergarten,
- 34:44the first grade or second grade. Now their parent bringing their kids to
- 34:47get backpacks. Man, it's just the family oriented thing. It's absolutely free.
- 34:52We have a lot of people this year that's gonna be outside, including
- 34:54Parmar convenience stores. They got water forward, Baby, yes, sir,
- 35:00that's that's what I hear. He got me to agree to that on the
- 35:02air line up as at two o'clock. So we're gonna start to hand it
- 35:07out backpacks filled with these school supplies at three o'clock. Where do we get
- 35:08the supplies from backpacks? We get from backpacks. Big shout out to Todd
- 35:13Judy Motors over there, man. Supplies came from Norfolk, Southern their training
- 35:19that you know, the train company they hooked us up. Ten and ten
- 35:23in corporation they hooked us up. There's a lot of people, Doctor,
- 35:27Portael, Proteil and Ptail. It's about thirty people. We like to call
- 35:30them community partners. We don't call them sponsors. Yeah, they community partners
- 35:35that just want to see this community grow. They're all about Charleston and they're
- 35:37all about these babies. Man, they're all about man. Making sure it's
- 35:40not a hand out. David's a hand up. We know it's The backpack
- 35:44is probably worth about twenty thirty bucks just to get the kids on the right
- 35:46track. And not only we get to give him a backpack, we actually
- 35:51get to see them, touch them, hug him, high five of them,
- 35:52encourage them and have a good time with him. Man tomorrow and last
- 35:55year was the first year, but I got a chance to help out director
- 35:59of traffic Control. I'd like to have that job again. You got what
- 36:01we do is, if you're familiar with the station, you know we're just
- 36:05down from Charleston Catholic High School. What we do is we actually line them
- 36:07up out on the streets and we bring them in an orderly fashion. You
- 36:09know, two or three at a time, and they have a different station
- 36:13that they get to. Are we doing the same similar only sure, we're
- 36:15gonna do a little difference since we've got a lot of community sponsors out there
- 36:19with us. We're gonna give them the bags first and not last, so
- 36:22they can have the bags first and walk around the circle and get stuff from
- 36:25the other community sponsors that they're giving away. That the bags should be packed
- 36:30like we Astley's in they're packing them right now. Bitch out out to West
- 36:32Virginia Health right too. They made it easy on us this year. They
- 36:36did a lot of packing over there at their East End location. They brought
- 36:38it over here to us, so we just got to put it in a
- 36:40bag man. So yeah, because normally it's like a it's like an assembly
- 36:44line we have here today, you know, loading those things up. And
- 36:47then one of the important things we want to make sure that people understand is
- 36:51is that the parents. A lot of times parents will come out and you
- 36:55know, they'll say, well, I've got so many kids. We actually
- 36:58have to see the kid. You got to talk to the Yeah, we
- 37:00don't want to talk to the parent. Parents, you're old. We want
- 37:01to talk yeah, you've already been at this school. We want to encourage
- 37:05these young ones. Man just about just like half fun in school, But
- 37:08school is very very important when you become a parent, when you're going through
- 37:14life like this. First grade, second grade is very very vital to the
- 37:19twelfth grade. It might sounds crazy, it might sound crazy right now,
- 37:22but it's very vital to pick up those skills while you're young so when you
- 37:24get older, you don't have to look back or reach back and try to
- 37:28figure out what the heck happened. And that goes to parents too. We
- 37:30gotta understand. We gotta read to our kids. We gotta when our kids
- 37:34speak wrong, we gotta tell no, you gotta speak this correctly right now.
- 37:37We gotta fix it now and not later, because once it become a
- 37:39habit. We all know habits are hard to break, but you can.
- 37:44You can break a habit with a child right now, like, no,
- 37:45don't do that, and they're like, okay, I'm not supposed to do
- 37:47that. Because but once you get in fifth or sixth grade trying to break
- 37:51that habit, it's tough. Yeah, because they already made it. They
- 37:52already made their mind up. This is what I'm gonna do so we just
- 37:55want to talk to him man. We I'm very excited about this year.
- 37:59Not only it's the first year at one oh seven three, but we got
- 38:02some cool stuff in the backpacks. We got water bottles. We learned that
- 38:07kids in school need water bottles. They that's that's part of the requirement.
- 38:09Now headphones, we got headphones in the bag. Like they really don't use
- 38:14pilchuling pen anymore. They're on iPad, so they listened with their iPads.
- 38:19So we got headphones in the bag. We got a lot of stuff that
- 38:22they really need. We went out on Facebook to see what the teachers need
- 38:25and what the children need, and they gave us a list and that's what
- 38:28we try to get into put in the backpacks. And this is one of
- 38:30those things too. What we have a couple of events a year that all
- 38:34the stations are and one this is one of seven three the beat thing.
- 38:37But you know, all of us from all the stations are gonna be out
- 38:39there, the sales teams out there, the I T. Department, everybody's
- 38:43out there just doing whatever we can to help. It's like a famary union
- 38:45w VRC Media. I think this is gonna be the second year at w
- 38:49VRC Media with the name change. But it's a good team building event,
- 38:52man. And it's not just about ninety I mean one oh seven three to
- 38:55be We got almost slipped up, almost slipped up. We got seven other
- 39:00radio stations that we're a family in this company. And that's what it's all
- 39:04about. We get to all hang out. We get to see the community.
- 39:07The community get to see us. And uh, that's what it's about
- 39:09tomorrow, man, all right, good stuff. I appreciate you. At
- 39:13two o'clock would be the lineup. And I got here last year, I
- 39:15think about like maybe one forty five, and there were already people lying down
- 39:22the streets and uh, and that's good. And I don't encourage that.
- 39:23I don't want you to be outside for like three or four hours. That's
- 39:28you know what I'm saying, because he got little ones. And you know,
- 39:30if you got a little one outside for three hours, that's very hard
- 39:34to guard. Yeah, that's like trying to guard Michael Jordan. Boys on
- 39:37fire, you hear me. He got you got that eight year old and
- 39:40they just running and running. But come at two o'clock, I promise we
- 39:44got five hundred backpacks. You will get it back back if you come at
- 39:46two o'clock. Nine, you come at four thirty, you gotta call Dave
- 39:50Allen over at Palmer. He might have something, but he come at two.
- 39:52You good, all right? We get people that come at four forty
- 39:55five. Yeah, you don't have any backpacks? No, brother started at
- 39:58two. Yeah all the yeah. I mean there's only so many to go
- 40:00around. It's first come, first surveys saying we have five hundred, and
- 40:04after the five hundred, that's it. Dance. We love you all right,
- 40:07wish you the best. Woody. We'll be listing man, keep doing
- 40:10what you did tomorrow. So I'll be here tomorrow. Thank you. Buddy
- 40:15Woods is here with us. There the backpack Attack again. It's brought to
- 40:19you by Todd, Judy Motors, and a bunch of other community sponsors.
- 40:22Well, and of course they all kind of the brainch out of Woody Woods.
- 40:24They're one of seven three the beats in. We'll be on the parking
- 40:27at eleven eleven Virginia Street East in Charleston tomorrow, so we hope that you
- 40:31will join us and get those kids the backpacks for the upcoming school year again
- 40:36we'll start the lineup at two and it's at three. I'll be over by
- 40:39about four thirty or five because we only have so many to go around.

- 44:15how are you. I'm doing well. Thank you. You've got to
- 44:17follow up Woody Woods. Oh that's tough and Tony Stroud and Millie Snyder.
- 44:22Oh, it's a murderers row here, Marjorie. There is a housing survey
- 44:28that's been floated around out there from Advantage Valley. First of all, before
- 44:30we get to that, for those who may not know what exactly is Advantage
- 44:34Valley. Advantage Valley is an economic regional development organization. We work with the
- 44:38state, We work with county economic development organizations. We work to attract business,
- 44:45to retain business, and to build new business in a nine county region
- 44:49in West Virginia spanning from Huntington to Charleston. It's the metro corridor. Greatest
- 44:54population base is here and so we work to really try to promote that region
- 45:00for growth and investment. And when you talk about Valley, you know,
- 45:05the first thing you think of is who you think about maybe you know the
- 45:08Honeyton area, Putnam County and Charleston. But there's a whole lot more to
- 45:12it than just that. As you said, how many counties we work with
- 45:14nine nine different counties, So that's going to take in some of a lot
- 45:16of the surrounding counties. To talk about that, well, it is it
- 45:20is Boone Cabal Clay on top of your head, But I'm just saying it's
- 45:24all the surrounding areas. It is, it is, and right now,
- 45:29specifically Jackson and Mason County are part of the Advantage Valley region and that is
- 45:34where some major investments have been announced over the past, you know, a
- 45:37couple of years, and we have lots of jobs coming in and so that
- 45:40is part of the reason for our housing survey, specifically new Core bringing you
- 45:45know, a thousand jobs, eight hundred, two thousand jobs, and Jackson
- 45:47County the Berkshire Hathaway Energy and Precision Cast Parts bringing possibly eight hundred to a
- 45:52thousand jobs. And there's another announcement to governor and I don't know what area
- 45:55it's from. We'll find out, I think at ten o'clock. But there's
- 45:58going to be another major jobs announcement from the governor coming up at ten o'clock
- 46:01this morning. I don't know. Just keep following us online for more information
- 46:05on that, Hoppy. I'm sure we'll talk about it, but that's coming
- 46:07up a little bit later on. So West Virginia is getting a lot of
- 46:09attention right now from people wanting to come here absolutely and what we want to
- 46:14do and look at it now is to try to quantify, you know,
- 46:19what the housing needs are because we know that two thousand jobs are coming and
- 46:22new jobs, so we will have people moving here and we already have a
- 46:27housing short yes we do. So we have retained a national firm called Bowen
- 46:32Research. They are known in the real estate market. So we are working
- 46:36on a massive housing assessment and as part of that, we are looking to
- 46:39get opinions from not only in folks who live here, residents and commuters,
- 46:45anyone that works in that you know, ten county area. We're also looking
- 46:50at talking to employers, developers, realtors and lenders. And again we need
- 46:54to quantify the housing demand over the next few years to try to encouragege and
- 47:00attract developers to help us with new housing or whatever the report reveals it could
- 47:07be. Then we have a lot of housing stock that needs to be renovated.
- 47:09But we know that we have a need and we need to you know,
- 47:13quantify that need for supply and demand. So how did you how are
- 47:16you going about the survey? How are you getting into people? How do
- 47:19people take it if they want to? It has been the survey has been
- 47:22out now for gosh three and a half weeks to a month. We are
- 47:25in the last three days. That's the key. We are in a push
- 47:29here, Dave. What I want to do is ask your listeners to take
- 47:31the housing survey. This is the portion that is for the residents and the
- 47:36commuters. So the easiest way to tell people how to do it on the
- 47:39radio is to go to advantage Valley dot com and click on the twenty twenty
- 47:44three Housing survey short survey ten minutes. We've got an extra bonus incentive for
- 47:49anyone that takes the survey. So that actually took the survey this morning,
- 47:52did you fantastic, Dave? If we're given away some gift cards two hundred
- 47:55and fifty dollars and five hundred dollars Visa gift cards, so we already have
- 48:00ds of responses. But the stronger the data, the stronger the input.
- 48:02So this is kind of every person's ability to be involved in economic development.
- 48:07Your opinion matters and we want to hear it. So between now and Friday
- 48:10at midnight, hit our website advantage Valley dot com and hit twenty twenty three
- 48:15Housing Survey. We need your opinion. And I will say this about the
- 48:21survey as I said, I took it about thirty minutes before the show.
- 48:22Is very simple, and you know, the questions are are there. They're
- 48:27not gonna ask you you know, European capitals or anything like that. It's
- 48:30very very simple. The questions that that you are asked about. You don't
- 48:34have to give up any personal information if you want. I mean there are
- 48:36areas we'll say, like, well, you know, what is your income,
- 48:38what is your age, but you don't put your name. You don't
- 48:40put your name on it or anything like that. Uh. And and there's
- 48:44some that are like you can mentioned two or three two or three different answers.
- 48:49You know, there could be the rank these or whatever. It's very
- 48:51very simple, and it's very needed because, as you've mentioned, Marjorie,
- 48:55there's a housing problem. And I have my good friend Rich the realtor,
- 48:58on once a month. It's kind of a bit of what's going on in
- 49:00the world of realty. And Rich client tells me I live in Tay's Valley,
- 49:05and I mean houses are I make the joke anytime somebody in our development
- 49:10takes their curtains down to wash them, ten ten people show up knocking on
- 49:14the door and saying are you are you selling your house, So no,
- 49:15we're just cleaning. I'm cleaning exactly. Well, there is a just we
- 49:21know there's a housing issue, and what we are trying to do as an
- 49:22organization is put real data on the table and this will help attract and encourage
- 49:29residential development and investment. There may need to be some incentives put into place,
- 49:34but with hard data to know what's what's currently here and what's needed.
- 49:38We're just trying to hit this off at the right time because we know the
- 49:43jobs are coming and the housing is a is an issue. So Advantage Valley
- 49:46does try to fill gaps. We don't try to you know, repeat work
- 49:50that other folks are doing. And we saw a real need to pull this
- 49:52in too huge survey, pricey survey. We've got super support from the counties,
- 49:59we've got some private banks involved, and we've got you know, just
- 50:02terrific support. So we're we're grateful for that. But we and we expect
- 50:07this report to be out at the end of the year December timeframe. So
- 50:10once you get the by the way, any Dimensions five eighty Live is brought
- 50:14to you a part by Generations Physical Therapy seven Convenient Locations along as sixty four
- 50:17and they're currently hiring for both license and technically trained staff. Form more information
- 50:21visit generations pt dot com. Alright, Marjorie, so you get this information
- 50:25compiled, you said by the end of the year, you should have some
- 50:29reports. What's the next step after that? I suppose our Housing committee will
- 50:34disseminate this information, will probably put it out on a press release, and
- 50:37we hope that information will draw attention from you know, whether it be lenders
- 50:44in the state, what do they need to do? What? You know,
- 50:46what do the housing developers need to do? And I think there will
- 50:50be possibly some incentive for folks to know exactly what's coming and that will help,
- 50:55you know, grease the wheels of new new how and possibly redevelopment of
- 51:00existing and making And make no mistake, they are coming to West Virginia.
- 51:05People are coming. And one of the reasons is is because we are the
- 51:07oldest state in the nation, so a lot of our people aren't of of
- 51:12working age anymore. They're retired folks and whatever, so they're not going to
- 51:15be the ones failing the jobs. So we're opening up West Virginia to a
- 51:20lot of people from the outside to come here, and they're coming. They're
- 51:22already here. I can tell you that they're they're already on the way.
- 51:27We need to do a marketing effort for new jobs in West Virginia. They're
- 51:30coming. We also have to have the housing for where they can live,
- 51:32and the employers need to know that they can recruit workers by having a good
- 51:37housing stock. So it's such a fundamental issue to the economic engine of the
- 51:42region, and we're trying to get out there and get quantifiable data to justify
- 51:46the supply and demand and how it's changing. Gotta have the numbers. And
- 51:50I know, right down just down the street, down the road a little
- 51:52bit from while they're getting ready put three hundred townhouses in there. Three hundred
- 51:55are coming there. So hey, Tay's Valley folks, you think you had
- 51:59to traffic problem now, but no, Look I always said there's a lot
- 52:02of areas that would that would kill to have a traffic problem, you know,
- 52:06So so we'll take it. Today's all right, give us the website
- 52:08again. We gotta wrap it up. If you take that survey at advantage
- 52:12Valley dot com and click on twenty twenty three housing Survey between now and Friday,
- 52:16at midnight. Thank you, Dave, and then and then yeah,
- 52:20absolutely, it's a very worthwhile endeavor that you folks at Advantage Valley got going
- 52:23on here now again, you got to midnight on Friday to fill this thing
- 52:27out, so make sure you do. And you couldn't win yourself a gift
- 52:29card, yes, just for filling an out all right, Marjorie Cut from
