- 0:01Speaker 1: And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John
- 0:04Speaker 1: his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and was transfigured before them. Matthew 17, 1 and 2
- 0:16Speaker 1: Like Peter, James, and John, I thank you, Jesus, that
- 0:20Speaker 1: you are giving me uncommon access to understanding and experiencing
- 0:25Speaker 1: you in new and powerful ways. I praise you for
- 0:30Speaker 1: your continued desire to take me higher and deeper into
- 0:35Speaker 1: the things of the Lord. In the same way that
- 0:39Speaker 1: you were transfigured, Jesus, I thank you that I am
- 0:43Speaker 1: being transformed into the very likeness and image of you.
- 0:49Speaker 1: In the same way our Heavenly Father validated your purpose, Jesus,
- 0:53Speaker 1: with John the Baptist, I also am recognizing the validation
- 0:58Speaker 1: I have from you, Lord, to be seen and heard.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Transform me from the inside out, and let me bring
- 1:07Speaker 1: others who are close to me in on the journey
- 1:11Speaker 1: of a transformed life. In Jesus' name.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Thank you for praying with us today. Continue your time
- 1:24Speaker 1: with God by listening to today's Bible story, brought to you.
- 1:41Speaker 2: A beautiful transfiguration. In our last story, Jesus healed a
- 1:46Speaker 2: man who was blind from birth. The young man who
- 1:50Speaker 2: was healed was questioned by the Pharisees, for they did
- 1:53Speaker 2: not want to admit that Jesus was truly good and
- 1:56Speaker 2: had the power to heal. The once blind man stood
- 2:00Speaker 2: firm in declaring that no evil man could do what
- 2:03Speaker 2: Jesus did. Now we get a glimpse of Jesus' true glory.
- 2:08Speaker 2: It emerges forth on a mountain, and three of the
- 2:11Speaker 2: disciples come in contact with the true holiness of Christ himself,
- 2:16Speaker 2: inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:23Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. But before we get to today's episode,
- 2:27Speaker 3: I want you to know that I would absolutely love
- 2:29Speaker 3: to send you my daily devotional that will give you
- 2:33Speaker 3: fresh encouragement every single morning and day. From the moment
- 2:38Speaker 3: we wake up to the moment our head finally hits
- 2:40Speaker 3: the pillow, there are thousands of things demanding our attention.
- 2:45Speaker 3: But it's in the midst of all this crush and
- 2:47Speaker 3: hustle and bustle that you and I need peace and
- 2:50Speaker 3: truth in God's Word. That's why I want to help
- 2:53Speaker 3: you spend time each day growing in God's life-giving, life-changing
- 2:58Speaker 3: Word by sending you my free daily email devotional, PowerPoint Today.

- 3:10Speaker 3: That's JackGraham.org. JackGraham.org. In our last episode, we heard how
- 3:18Speaker 3: Jesus healed a beggar who had been blind since birth.
- 3:21Speaker 3: He used the opportunity to teach his disciples an important
- 3:24Speaker 3: lesson about God's compassion and to correct their wrong thinking
- 3:28Speaker 3: about the cause of illness and disease. He also used
- 3:32Speaker 3: it as an opportunity to show the Pharisees their own
- 3:35Speaker 3: lack of compassion and spiritual vision. Today we'll hear how
- 3:39Speaker 3: Peter demonstrates a deeper understanding of who Jesus is. Then
- 3:44Speaker 3: we'll learn how Jesus gives three of his closest disciples
- 3:47Speaker 3: an opportunity to see his true glory and a mountaintop
- 3:51Speaker 3: experience that would leave them both terrified and in wonder
- 3:55Speaker 3: at the same time. Let's listen now to the Gospel reading.
- 4:00Speaker 2: The fire crackled under the evening stars. Jesus and his
- 4:04Speaker 2: disciples lounged around the warm flames. Jesus was praying silently
- 4:10Speaker 2: to the Lord. The disciples were staring into flickering light.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Jesus lifted his eyes to the disciples. What do people
- 4:18Speaker 2: say that I am? he asked. The disciples shrugged. Some
- 4:22Speaker 2: say that you are John the Baptist, Thaddeus said while
- 4:25Speaker 2: poking the fire. Others say you are Elisha. Some would
- 4:29Speaker 2: even say you are one of the prophets of old
- 4:32Speaker 2: that has risen from the dead, James answered. Jesus looked
- 4:36Speaker 2: deep into the flames. But who do you say that
- 4:39Speaker 2: I am, he asked. It was a serious question, a
- 4:42Speaker 2: question that required thought. Peter lifted his gaze to Jesus.
- 4:47Speaker 2: He was not known as a deep thinker. In fact,
- 4:50Speaker 2: Peter was often known for his fast mouth and brash actions. However,
- 4:55Speaker 2: Peter was sure of what he was about to say.
- 4:57Speaker 2: He knew it in his bones. Peter looked deeply through
- 5:01Speaker 2: the flames towards Jesus. You are the Christ, he said,
- 5:05Speaker 2: the Son of God. It was early the next morning,
- 5:09Speaker 2: and the sun had not yet peered over the horizon.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Darkness still shrouded the cool morning, and Jesus gently woke Peter, James,
- 5:16Speaker 2: and John. Not waking the other disciples, Jesus led them
- 5:20Speaker 2: up a hill. It overlooked the first moments of sunrise.
- 5:24Speaker 2: As Peter, James, and John stood over the valley below,
- 5:27Speaker 2: a bright light emerged from Jesus. The brightness was piercing,
- 5:31Speaker 2: and his face shone like the rising sun itself. It
- 5:35Speaker 2: was as if his humanity was unzipped, and the essence
- 5:38Speaker 2: of his deity shone through the cracks. It was too
- 5:41Speaker 2: amazing and too terrifying for the three men to describe.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Emerging from the light was Moses and Elijah themselves. The
- 5:49Speaker 2: three men watched as Jesus spoke with them, yet they
- 5:52Speaker 2: were not as equals. The two historic men of faith
- 5:55Speaker 2: bowed to Christ as their Lord and spoke to him
- 5:58Speaker 2: as God. It was too great for Peter's heart to handle.
- 6:02Speaker 2: He spoke up and said, Lord, it is good that
- 6:05Speaker 2: we are here. Let us make three tents up here
- 6:08Speaker 2: for you, Moses, and Elijah. Then we can... As Peter
- 6:12Speaker 2: was speaking, a bright light consumed Peter and the others completely.
- 6:16Speaker 2: A cloud of holy radiance swirled around them like a tempest.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Peter shrunk on the floor into a fetal position, covering
- 6:23Speaker 2: his eyes from the light. A voice like thunder boomed
- 6:27Speaker 2: from the clouds, saying, This is my beloved Son, with
- 6:31Speaker 2: whom I am pleased. Hear Him and only Him. The
- 6:36Speaker 2: voice sent all the disciples onto their faces. Then the
- 6:40Speaker 2: light disappeared. The disciples opened their eyes to see Jesus
- 6:44Speaker 2: standing alone on the top of the hill. They saw
- 6:47Speaker 2: Jesus only, without his radiance, but equally holy. He helped
- 6:52Speaker 2: them to his feet and led them down the hill.
- 6:55Speaker 2: The sun was beginning to rise and they could see
- 6:57Speaker 2: the other disciples beginning to stir awake. Tell no one
- 7:00Speaker 2: of what you saw this morning, Jesus commanded the three,
- 7:04Speaker 2: not until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.
- 7:07Speaker 2: As they were descending down, one of the disciples asked,
- 7:10Speaker 2: Isn't it said that Elijah will return before the Son
- 7:13Speaker 2: of Man? Jesus nodded and said, It is true, but
- 7:17Speaker 2: Elijah has already come back. You just did not recognize him.
- 7:22Speaker 2: The disciples understood who he was referring to. John the
- 7:26Speaker 2: Baptist was a voice crying from the wilderness. He was
- 7:30Speaker 2: the one who came before Jesus, declaring the way of
- 7:34Speaker 2: the Lord.
- 7:37Speaker 3: We begin today's reading with Jesus and his disciples sitting
- 7:40Speaker 3: by a fire. By this point, they've seen their teacher
- 7:43Speaker 3: do amazing things, from healing the crippled, lame, and even
- 7:48Speaker 3: raising the dead, to feeding thousands in a miraculous display
- 7:52Speaker 3: of God's provision. They've heard him speak to the Pharisees,
- 7:55Speaker 3: challenging their understanding of God's law and the purpose of
- 7:59Speaker 3: God's law. So Jesus begins with a simple question. Who
- 8:04Speaker 3: do people say I am? The disciples are quick to reply.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Some say he's Elijah, others that he's John the Baptist.
- 8:12Speaker 3: There seems to be no general consensus or true understanding
- 8:15Speaker 3: among many as to who is Jesus. So then he
- 8:18Speaker 3: asked the harder question, who do you say that I am?
- 8:23Speaker 3: They've been closer to Jesus than anyone. They've seen him
- 8:26Speaker 3: in public, spoken to him in private. If anyone was
- 8:30Speaker 3: to grasp his true nature, it should be them. I
- 8:33Speaker 3: can almost hear the crickets as the question hung in
- 8:36Speaker 3: the air. Silence, but not for long. If there's one
- 8:40Speaker 3: thing you can say about Simon Peter is that he's
- 8:42Speaker 3: quick to jump up and speak his mind. So he says,
- 8:46Speaker 3: you are the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus replied
- 8:51Speaker 3: that Peter was correct. But as Jesus continued, he told
- 8:54Speaker 3: him that the insight did not come from Peter's own understanding.
- 8:58Speaker 3: God had revealed this truth, the foundation of the church
- 9:01Speaker 3: God would one day build. The truth that Jesus is
- 9:04Speaker 3: the Son of God, the Messiah, the Savior of the world,
- 9:08Speaker 3: is the core of the Christian faith. Less than a
- 9:11Speaker 3: week later, Jesus took Peter, John, and James with him
- 9:15Speaker 3: to the top of a high mountain. As we've seen before,
- 9:18Speaker 3: these three men had a very special closeness with and
- 9:22Speaker 3: access to Jesus. But nothing they'd seen so far had
- 9:26Speaker 3: prepared them for what was about to happen. There on
- 9:29Speaker 3: top of the mountain, Jesus was transformed right before their eyes. Jesus,
- 9:35Speaker 3: the light of the world, shone brightly around them. His
- 9:38Speaker 3: face was bright as the sun and his clothes shone
- 9:41Speaker 3: in brilliant white. The disciples were amazed at what they
- 9:45Speaker 3: were seeing, but there was more to come. Then Elijah
- 9:49Speaker 3: and Moses were standing with Jesus, talking to him. The
- 9:52Speaker 3: moment was so spectacular that Peter had an idea. Why
- 9:56Speaker 3: don't we just stay here forever, he asked. It's understandable.
- 10:00Speaker 3: When we experience something incredible and life-changing, our desire is
- 10:04Speaker 3: often to capture that moment and never let it end.
- 10:08Speaker 3: But to do so would have been self-serving. This moment
- 10:11Speaker 3: was meant to move these disciples to greater things in
- 10:14Speaker 3: the future. Everything that Jesus is on the inside is
- 10:18Speaker 3: now radiating on the outside. It is a metamorphosis, a transfiguration.
- 10:24Speaker 3: And they, the disciples, would then be empowered to take Jesus,
- 10:28Speaker 3: the light of the world, to every person they could.
- 10:32Speaker 3: It's a reminder for all of us to take these
- 10:34Speaker 3: high mountaintop experiences when we feel very close to God
- 10:38Speaker 3: and allow them to strengthen us and encourage us so
- 10:41Speaker 3: that we would pursue God and share his love with others.
- 10:45Speaker 3: No sooner had Peter spoken that a cloud came over them,
- 10:49Speaker 3: just as a cloud had covered Israel in the days
- 10:51Speaker 3: of Moses in the desert. God's voice thundered out of
- 10:55Speaker 3: that cloud, repeating what God had said when Jesus was
- 10:57Speaker 3: baptized by John the Baptist, This is my Son, with
- 11:01Speaker 3: whom I am well pleased. But this time, the identification
- 11:05Speaker 3: of Jesus as God's Son came with a command. And
- 11:09Speaker 3: that command is this, Listen to Him. If there had
- 11:14Speaker 3: been any question in their minds that Jesus had come
- 11:16Speaker 3: from heaven, that he is the Son of God, now
- 11:19Speaker 3: all doubt was wiped away. This realization filled Peter, James,
- 11:23Speaker 3: and John with fear because they were in the presence
- 11:27Speaker 3: of God. But then we see in Matthew 17 and
- 11:30Speaker 3: verse 7, But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Rise,
- 11:34Speaker 3: and have no fear. They had nothing to fear because
- 11:37Speaker 3: Jesus was with them. And the same is true today.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Because of Christ, we do not have to fear the
- 11:43Speaker 3: presence of God. We can fear Him properly and respect
- 11:46Speaker 3: Him and revere Him. But fear, real fear, the fear
- 11:50Speaker 3: of God, is love on its knees and worship of
- 11:53Speaker 3: our God. As they descended the mountain, Jesus told them
- 11:57Speaker 3: to keep what had happened to themselves until the Son
- 12:00Speaker 3: of Man had risen from the dead. This command likely
- 12:04Speaker 3: perplexed them as they still did not fully understand what
- 12:07Speaker 3: Jesus was going to do. One of the disciples asked
- 12:10Speaker 3: why some say Elijah must return before the Son of Man,
- 12:14Speaker 3: and Jesus explained that in a way, this had already happened.
- 12:18Speaker 3: John the Baptist had completed the ministry of Elijah, preparing
- 12:22Speaker 3: the way of the Lord. But just as the people
- 12:25Speaker 3: failed to recognize Jesus, they did not recognize that John
- 12:29Speaker 3: the Baptist was the one declaring the arrival of the Savior.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Dear God, we thank you for your word, which is
- 12:36Speaker 3: light and life to us. Thank you that you are
- 12:40Speaker 3: the Savior, the Son of God, who is the light
- 12:43Speaker 3: of the world. Help us to remember that in mountaintop experiences,
- 12:47Speaker 3: when we see you clearly, that it's not enough for
- 12:50Speaker 3: us to remain there, but we are to go and
- 12:52Speaker 3: tell others of your love and your grace. We pray
- 12:56Speaker 3: this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Thank you for
