Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: The Benefit Of Going Through Hard Times
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Badi here you are listening to five
- 0:22Speaker 1: minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I'm home and it feels so nice.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And on Monday, I am going back to my favorite okay,
- 0:31Speaker 1: one of my favorite places.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I'm going back to Paris. I'm going out for breaking four.
- 0:36Speaker 1: It's faith Kip Jiggins's effort to break four minutes in
- 0:41Speaker 1: the mile. I am amped, I'm excited to be back,
- 0:45Speaker 1: and it has me really evaluating gosh, like, what is
- 0:50Speaker 1: going on now versus this time last year. Literally on
- 0:56Speaker 1: June I think it was June twenty sixth last year,
- 1:00Speaker 1: I got an email offering me work during the Olympics
- 1:05Speaker 1: in Paris. And that email came after I made the
- 1:09Speaker 1: conscious decision that I was going to go out there anyway.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I was going to hit the ground running literally physically,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and do as many athlete interviews as possible, network as
- 1:19Speaker 1: much as possible, and really put myself out there, going
- 1:23Speaker 1: admittedly a little bit outside of my comfort zone to
- 1:27Speaker 1: chase what felt so right for me, And in doing
- 1:31Speaker 1: that I was rewarded. I was rewarded for going outside
- 1:35Speaker 1: of my comfort zone because more work found me when
- 1:39Speaker 1: I was willing to create space and stop worrying so
- 1:43Speaker 1: much about the things that were out of my control.
- 1:46Speaker 2: It opened up more doors for me, and.
- 1:49Speaker 1: That's a lesson that I continually go back to time
- 1:53Speaker 1: and time again, especially in the top half of this year,
- 1:57Speaker 1: when I was wondering in moments, what's going on here?
- 2:01Speaker 1: Why do I consistently feel as though I'm putting a
- 2:04Speaker 1: round peg into a square hole?
- 2:07Speaker 2: I know that you've been there.
- 2:09Speaker 1: So Yeah, as I reflect back to this time last
- 2:12Speaker 1: year and I think about my trip next week, I'm
- 2:14Speaker 1: feeling sentimental and grateful for the moments that I felt
- 2:19Speaker 1: like I wasn't good enough, I felt frustrated that I
- 2:22Speaker 1: didn't have it all together, because it is in these
- 2:25Speaker 1: moments that we learn.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Who we really are.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And I know that I have the tenacity and the
- 2:30Speaker 1: strength and the courage to keep going when things don't
- 2:35Speaker 1: feel easy, and that is something I'm really grateful for.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It's also something that I want to make sure I
- 2:43Speaker 1: drive home. It is very rarely when things are smooth sailing,
- 2:46Speaker 1: when everything is going well, that you learn a ton. Yes,
- 2:51Speaker 1: it's important to enjoy the ride, and I'm not saying
- 2:53Speaker 1: every day you need to wake up and face a
- 2:55Speaker 1: challenge not at all, But I encourage you, in the
- 2:58Speaker 1: moments of adversity to so look for the opportunity to
- 3:02Speaker 1: ask yourself, what is it that I can learn from
- 3:05Speaker 1: this moment and what will I take with me moving forward?
- 3:10Speaker 1: And so this week for the thought prompt, I want
- 3:13Speaker 1: you to ask yourself or do a little reflecting rather,
- 3:15Speaker 1: what's going on right now that's making you feel a
- 3:18Speaker 1: little frustrated, something that's a little bit more challenging than
- 3:22Speaker 1: you'd like. And where's the lesson in that? What are
- 3:25Speaker 1: you learning about yourself, your situation, your circumstance, and how
- 3:29Speaker 1: can you take that lesson to become a tool in
- 3:32Speaker 1: your toolkit moving forward? And now a listener question. Hey Emily,
- 3:39Speaker 1: it's Emily from Chicago, an avid Instagram follower and Hurdle listener.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I'm curious about the perception of discussion that comes with
- 3:48Speaker 1: If it isn't tracked, it doesn't count. I have so
- 3:51Speaker 1: many friends that use apps like Strava or share data
- 3:54Speaker 1: on Apple Fitness, and sometimes all of this data makes
- 3:57Speaker 1: me feel super overwhelmed. With all of the advancement of
- 4:00Speaker 1: technology and the gadgets that are available to us, how
- 4:03Speaker 1: do we ensure we're using them to help us, or
- 4:05Speaker 1: how do we know when they're hindering us? How bad
- 4:07Speaker 1: is it really to be focused on meeting the marks,
- 4:10Speaker 1: hitting the steps, or documenting or tracking the movement. Anyway,
- 4:14Speaker 1: I'm rambling just some thoughts and questions on the topic
- 4:17Speaker 1: and thought you'd have some pretty interesting feedback. Thanks in advance,
- 4:21Speaker 1: Keep conquering hurdles, Emily. Wow, this is a good one,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and an in depth one at that. I Wow, I
- 4:29Speaker 1: can relate with this. I am, as many of you know,
- 4:33Speaker 1: basically a little over a year of closing my Apple
- 4:36Speaker 1: Watch rings almost every day. There was one day last
- 4:39Speaker 1: week or maybe the week before that I missed the mark,
- 4:42Speaker 1: which was slightly heartbreaking, But I digress. So I understand
- 4:47Speaker 1: the mental gymnastics that go with paying attention to this
- 4:51Speaker 1: type of data. I also feel as though for me specifically,
- 4:56Speaker 1: tracking the data is more of a helpful thing than
- 5:00Speaker 1: a hindrance. However, I did write an article once on
- 5:04Speaker 1: what is commonly referred to as the no sebo effect,
- 5:07Speaker 1: which is that we see information from wearables, whether that's
- 5:10Speaker 1: a whoop or an aura or an Apple watch or
- 5:12Speaker 1: a garment or whatever, and that data makes us feel
- 5:16Speaker 1: like a lesser version of ourselves. It's like, if you
- 5:18Speaker 1: wake up in the morning and you feel good and
- 5:21Speaker 1: you feel like you slept great, and then you look
- 5:23Speaker 1: at your sleep data and it says that you're not
- 5:26Speaker 1: doing so hot, then suddenly you can't trust your gut anymore,
- 5:30Speaker 1: and that can be frustrating.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I totally understand.
- 5:34Speaker 1: So basically, what I'm saying here when I think about
- 5:37Speaker 1: the questions that you posed, is you have to do
- 5:41Speaker 1: an honest inventory with how this data makes you feel.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Maybe some days keeping.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Track of things feels good, in other days it doesn't,
- 5:50Speaker 1: but you're the only person that can really answer that question.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I actually have a friend who does wear and Apple
- 6:00Speaker 1: Watch every day except on Sundays, and she said that
- 6:03Speaker 1: one day of the week it's something that she looks
- 6:06Speaker 1: forward to, but she also appreciates the data all of
- 6:09Speaker 1: the other days of the week.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:10Speaker 1: So again, these are examples of how I make your
- 6:14Speaker 1: work for me, how she makes it work for me,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and you have the opportunity to distinguish what feels right
- 6:19Speaker 1: for you period. One last note, I've really liked being
- 6:23Speaker 1: able to see the progression of my fitness over the
- 6:26Speaker 1: last year, both when it comes to running and then
- 6:30Speaker 1: really specifically when it comes to strength training. So for me,
- 6:34Speaker 1: the data gives me an opportunity to look back at
- 6:37Speaker 1: how far.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I've come, and that's something that I really enjoy.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Again, to each their own, but listen to your gut
- 6:46Speaker 1: and know that just because someone does it one way
- 6:50Speaker 1: does not mean that you have to do it that
- 6:53Speaker 1: way too. Make sure you're following along over on social
- 6:56Speaker 1: It's over at Hurdle podcast. I'm over at Emily a
