- 0:00Granny said eat your veggies first.
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:08Chad #1166 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:11yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:14you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16This message is dedicated to Sarah Geneva Rose Badgley on her
- 0:19birthday. Happy birthday Sarah, here's the
- 0:22upgrade. You think you have a discipline
- 0:24problem, but upgraded think he knows most of it is just an
- 0:27ordering problem. Here's the story.
- 0:31Charlie Munger loved the simplest reward system on earth.
- 0:34He called it Granny's rule. You eat your carrots before you
- 0:37get your dessert. You don't need a new reward, a
- 0:40new app, a new accountability partner.
- 0:43You treat yourself already. You take the coffee, the couch,
- 0:45the phone you were going to have anyway, and you just move it to
- 0:482nd. The dessert was never the
- 0:50problem. Its position was you don't
- 0:53delete dessert, you demote it. This message may wrap up a
- 0:58little miniseries we've been doing on incentives.
- 1:01You can go back to message 1162 if you want to start at the
- 1:04beginning. Kobe Bryant at the beginning of
- 1:06the summer would write out his entire training program, every
- 1:10workout in advance. Why on paper?
- 1:13Why so early? Because he knew that mid-july,
- 1:16exhausted, he'd start negotiating with himself.
- 1:19What if I did this instead? I could just skip today.
- 1:23So he made the decisions before the excuses arrived.
- 1:26Writing it down took the vote off the ballot.
- 1:29That's Granny's rule at the level of a champion.
- 1:32Decide once while you're strong so you don't have to decide
- 1:36again when you're weak, because that's the real disease.
- 1:41Kevin Kelly says the whole purpose of a habit is to remove
- 1:43the action from self negotiation.
- 1:46Most of us never do it. We redecide the hard thing.
- 1:51Every single morning we hold a little election in our head.
- 1:56Should I work out? Should I write?
- 1:58Should I make the call? And we campaign and we stall and
- 2:02eventually willpower loses. Nobody wins 1000 elections in a
- 2:07row. But Chad, isn't that just
- 2:09discipline? No discipline is winning the
- 2:13fight. Granny's rule is not having the
- 2:15fight at all. And don't underestimate how much
- 2:19of your life runs like this, Munger said.
- 2:21He spent his whole career in the top 5% of people who understand
- 2:25incentives and still underestimated their power every
- 2:29single year. So you are almost certainly
- 2:32under estimating how much of your I need more willpower is
- 2:37really just I put dessert first. The better story to tell
- 2:41yourself is I put things in their proper order.
- 2:45Name your carrot, the workout, the page, the call.
- 2:49Name your dessert, the coffee, the couch, the feed.
- 2:53Fix the order. Put the carrot 1st and then
- 2:56decide it once today. So tomorrow there's no vote.
- 3:00Carrots, then dessert. Every day, no exception.
- 3:03Tell me a story of a granny's rule you run on yourself to from
- 3:06chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 3:10what's your carrot and what's your dessert?
