- 0:00What is the highest expression of fruitfulness?
- 0:04Feeding the starving masses? Finding the cure for cancer?
- 0:09No. As noble as those things are,
- 0:13the highest expression of fruitfulness is to help others
- 0:18close the gap of separation from God.
- 0:23It is less important how your life stacks up against another
- 0:27than what you do with what you have.
- 0:30You cannot help everyone, but you can help someone.
- 0:52God's plan for us is not only to be cleansed of sin through the
- 0:57blood of Christ and not only endowed with His power by His
- 1:04Spirit, but consequently empowered to be fruitful, to
- 1:09make a difference, do good by the power and gifts of God.
- 1:15Hello, my name is Larry Corbridge and this is episode 15
- 1:21of the Stand Forever series. In the past episode, we
- 1:26concluded the supreme expression of intelligence.
- 1:31The crowning achievement of every rational being is to
- 1:34choose best, and the best choices are to receive the gifts
- 1:39of God's Son, his Spirit and life, and help others do the
- 1:43same. In the last two episodes, we
- 1:48considered the gifts of God's Son and his Spirit.
- 1:53The focus of this episode is choose God's life and be
- 1:58fruitful, President Russell M Nelson said Our.
- 2:04Ultimate quest in life is to prepare to meet our.
- 2:08Maker on another occasion, he tenderly added.
- 2:13More than anything, our Father wants his children to choose to
- 2:17return home to him. Everything he does is motivated
- 2:22by his yearning desire. The entire reason we are here on
- 2:28earth is to qualify to live with Him forever.
- 2:34We do that by using our agency to find and stay on the covenant
- 2:39path that leads back to our heavenly home.
- 2:44People say life is a journey. Enjoy the journey.
- 2:49And that's in so many ways good advice.
- 2:52But life is also about getting to the end, reunion with God,
- 2:59receiving the gift of God's Son, God's Spirit, and God's life by
- 3:04engaging in God's work and helping others do the same.
- 3:10Most of the prayers of Jesus were never written.
- 3:15Some could could not be written, but glory be to the Father.
- 3:20We have the summation prayer of Christ mortal ministry offered
- 3:25in his last hours on earth. He said, and this is life
- 3:32eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God in Jesus
- 3:37Christ, whom thou has sinned. And then he continued, Neither
- 3:42pray I for these meaning his disciples alone, but for them
- 3:48which also believe on me through their word, that they also may
- 3:54be one, as Thou Father art in me, and I in Thee, that they
- 4:00also may be one in us. This divine unity to become one
- 4:11with God in worthiness, power, purpose, direction, work, and
- 4:16ultimately character, knowledge and life, is the purpose of the
- 4:22Gospel of Jesus Christ God famously revealed to Moses.
- 4:29For behold, this is my work and my glory to bring to pass the
- 4:34immortality and eternal life of man.
- 4:38Because that purpose was declared by God himself, we
- 4:43would do well to also make it ours.
- 4:48God's purposes are of little consequence unless we make them
- 4:52ours as well. Immortality and eternal life.
- 4:59Immortality is more than unending life, which was our
- 5:04condition before mortality. Immortality is unending life as
- 5:11a resurrected being, spirit and body, united inseparably
- 5:16forevermore. Although the resurrection is
- 5:20universal for all who pass through the portals of
- 5:24mortality, it is foolish to regard it casually because there
- 5:29will be differences in timing and glory in the resurrection.
- 5:34According to faithfulness in this life.
- 5:39Eternal life is to go home, reunion with God.
- 5:45It is to be fitted for His presence and return to our
- 5:51Father as an immortal resurrected person and live the
- 5:57quality of life He lives. People often think of of the
- 6:03Celestial Kingdom as the ultimate destination, and in a
- 6:07sense it is. But eternal life is not just a
- 6:11location, but a way of life. It is more a matter of who you
- 6:18will be than where, and that is a matter of choice.
- 6:25One of the overarching purposes of life is to become fruitful.
- 6:33To make a difference in the lives of others is not only part
- 6:37of the journey, but also part of the destination.
- 6:41It isn't just about faithfulness, but making a
- 6:44difference, fruitfulness. Of all the things Peter might
- 6:49have said in In summation of the ministry of Christ, he simply
- 6:54said he went about doing good. That is the pattern for all of
- 7:03us. It is not only doing good, but
- 7:06receiving the Holy Ghost to be empowered to do good.
- 7:12It isn't just about faithfulness, but fruitfulness
- 7:16making a difference. More specifically, it is about
- 7:20faithfulness to become fruitful. While Jesus sent his disciples
- 7:27into all the world, his own ministry was limited to the
- 7:32small area between Galilee and Jerusalem.
- 7:36While he healed everyone among the Nephites, not so in Israel,
- 7:42where he is healing touched only scattered individuals.
- 7:47Surely he could have traveled farther, He could have healed
- 7:51more, but he didn't. I suppose he could have healed
- 7:56people collectively, but he didn't.
- 8:01Even among the Nephites, when everyone was healed, he healed
- 8:05them one by one. There we have a refinement to
- 8:11the pattern of doing good, making a difference.
- 8:15You cannot help everyone, but you can help someone.
- 8:21You cannot right every wrong, but you can right some wrongs.
- 8:26You cannot do everything, but you can do something.
- 8:31Most of the good that is done happens 1 by 1, and usually
- 8:37without recognition. Jesus not only set that pattern,
- 8:43but also taught much about becoming fruitful.
- 8:47It is a dominant thread woven throughout the entire fabric of
- 8:53his teachings. For example, he said from the
- 8:58Gospel of Matthew, either make the tree good and his fruit
- 9:03good, or else make the tree corrupt and his fruit corrupt,
- 9:07for the tree is known by his fruit.
- 9:11Another from Matthew. And he spake many things unto
- 9:16them in parables, saying, Behold, A sower went forth to
- 9:21sow, and when he sowed, some seeds fell by the wayside, and
- 9:26the fowls came and devoured them up.
- 9:29Some fell upon Stony places where they had not much earth,
- 9:33and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness in
- 9:37the earth. And when the sun was up they
- 9:40were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away.
- 9:45And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprung up and choked
- 9:50them. But others fell into good ground
- 9:54and brought forth fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold,
- 9:58some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear?
- 10:03Let him hear another example from the Gospel of John.
- 10:11Lift up your eyes and look on the fields, for they are white
- 10:14already to harvest. He that reapeth receiveth wages,
- 10:19and gathereth fruit unto life eternal, that both he that
- 10:23soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
- 10:28Another from John. I am the true vine, and my
- 10:32father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth
- 10:37not fruit, he taketh away. In every branch that beareth
- 10:42fruit, He, our Father, purges it, that it may bring forth more
- 10:49fruit. Purge means to make something
- 10:53pure, free from guilt, sin, or defilement to perfect.
- 10:58Then continuing on, he says, Abide in me, and I in you.
- 11:04As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself except it, abide in
- 11:08the vine, no more can ye except ye abide in me.
- 11:12I am the vine, and ye are the branches.
- 11:16He that abideth in me, and I in Him the same, the same bringeth
- 11:21forth much fruit, for without me ye can do nothing.
- 11:29Herein is my Father glorified. He said that that ye bear much
- 11:35fruit, so shall ye be my disciples.
- 11:40Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained
- 11:45you that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit
- 11:51should remain, that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my
- 11:56name, he may give it to you. I know this is a lot, but here
- 12:03is the Parable of the talents. In the parable of the talents,
- 12:07the Lord dramatically affirms using our talents to good
- 12:12advantage, and He does so in two different ways.
- 12:18There were three servants. The first was given 5 talents,
- 12:25the second was given 2 talents, and the third only had one
- 12:30talent. The third servant, as you know,
- 12:34did nothing with what he was given.
- 12:36He was unprofitable or unfruitful, and he lost what he
- 12:40had. That's the first lesson.
- 12:44Use it or lose it. The second lesson involves the
- 12:48other two servants, both of whom were fruitful, the one who had
- 12:54five at the outset and then 10 when his account was taken, and
- 12:59the second who had two talents to begin with and four in the
- 13:03end. Both listen to this.
- 13:07They both received the same commendation.
- 13:12The Lord said to both of them, word for word, the same.
- 13:17Well done, thou good and faithful servant.
- 13:21Thou has been faithful over a few things.
- 13:24I will make thee ruler over many things.
- 13:28Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.
- 13:33It is less important how your life stacks up against another
- 13:39than what you do with what you have.
- 13:44Again, it is less important how your life stacks up against
- 13:50another then what you do with what you have.
- 13:56The next parable, the parable of the sheep and the goats, is
- 14:01especially sobering as the Lord separates the sheep from the
- 14:06goats based on one thing only. When all the nations of the
- 14:13earth are gathered before him, he will set his sheep on his
- 14:17right hand and the goats on the left.
- 14:21He will say to those on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of
- 14:26my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the
- 14:30foundation of the world. For I was in hungered, and you
- 14:35gave me meat. I was thirsty, and you gave me
- 14:39drink. I was a stranger, and you took
- 14:41me in naked, and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me.
- 14:47I was in prison, and you came unto me.
- 14:52The righteous will then ask, when did we do these things?
- 14:58And he replies, In as much as you have done it unto the least
- 15:03of these, my brethren, you have done it unto me.
- 15:10The Book of Mormon is equally clear that we should be
- 15:14fruitful. The focus of the entire chapter
- 15:19of Jacob 5 is about the Lord of the vineyard and his servants
- 15:23pruning, nurturing, and caring for his vineyard, all to the end
- 15:28of good fruit. Alma also famously taught.
- 15:35And behold, as the tree beginneth to grow, ye will say,
- 15:39Let us nourish it with great care, that it may get root, that
- 15:44it may grow up and bring forth fruit unto us.
- 15:49And now behold, he said, if he nourish it with much care, it
- 15:53will get root and grow up and bring forth fruit.
- 15:57But if you will nourish the word, yeah, nourish the tree as
- 16:02it beginneth to grow by your faith, with great diligence and
- 16:06with patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall
- 16:11take root, and behold, it shall be a tree springing up unto
- 16:17everlasting life. While speaking to his son, Alma
- 16:25described the fruits of his conversion, saying, Yeah.
- 16:29And from that time, even until now, I have labored without
- 16:34ceasing that I might bring souls unto repentance, that I might
- 16:39bring them to taste the exceeding joy of which I did
- 16:43taste, that they also may be born of God and be filled with
- 16:48the Holy Ghost. Yeah.
- 16:50And now behold, O my son, the Lord doth give me exceedingly
- 16:54great joy in the fruit of my laborers.
- 17:01We're getting to the end here. In the last chapter of the Book
- 17:05of Mormon, Moroni makes this profound observation.
- 17:10He says, And now I speak unto all the ends of the earth, that
- 17:16if the day cometh that the power and gifts of God shall be done
- 17:21away, it shall be because of unbelief, and will be unto you
- 17:27if this be the case. For there shall be none that do
- 17:31with good among you. No, not one.
- 17:37For if there be one among you that do with good, he shall work
- 17:41by the power and gifts of God. I know that was a lot.
- 17:48But God's plan for us is not only to be cleansed of sin
- 17:53through the blood of Christ, and not only endowed with the power
- 17:57of heaven by His Spirit, but consequently empowered to be
- 18:04fruitful, to make a difference, to do good by the power and
- 18:11gifts of God. No teaching, however, is as
- 18:17clear and compelling about becoming fruitful as the Sermon
- 18:21on the Mound. It is the greatest servant
- 18:26sermon ever given in the history of mankind, and it is not a
- 18:31random collection of truths, rather a carefully orchestrated
- 18:36sermon which leads to an important conclusion which is to
- 18:42be fruitful, especially members of the Church.
- 18:49The Lord describes the process, beginning with the recognition
- 18:53that we are poor in spirit, which in turn should cause us to
- 18:59mourn for our sins. Focus on that of eternal value.
- 19:05Be filled with the Holy Ghost, then avoid all that that would
- 19:10offend the Spirit and stand firm against adversity, all to the
- 19:15end that we become the salt of the earth, that we become the
- 19:24light of the world, a city set upon a hill.
- 19:29He adds, Not to put your candle under a bushel, but let your
- 19:34light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and
- 19:39glorify your Father, which is in heaven.
- 19:43He is speaking to those who not only believe Him, but have
- 19:48embraced that belief through faith, repentance, and the
- 19:52covenants of baptism. He said, When men are called
- 19:57unto mine everlasting gospel and covenant, they are accounted as
- 20:03the salt of the earth and the savour of men.
- 20:10At the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Christ returns to the
- 20:14same important conclusion to be fruitful, saying, Ye shall know
- 20:21them by their fruits. Even so every good tree bringeth
- 20:27forth good fruit, but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
- 20:33Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
- 20:40And what is the highest expression of fruitfulness?
- 20:47Feeding the starving masses? Finding a cure for cancer,
- 20:52cheering up the sad and making someone feel glad.
- 20:57No, as noble as those things are, along with 1000 other good
- 21:03things, the highest expression of fruitfulness is to help
- 21:08others close the gap of separation from God by receiving
- 21:15God's greatest gifts, His Son, His Spirit, and His life.
- 21:22The Lord said, Ye are of the House of Israel, and ye are the
- 21:28covenant which the Father made with our fathers, saying unto
- 21:33Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be
- 21:41blessed unto the pouring out of the Holy Ghost through me.
- 21:48The purpose of the Father's plan is not only that you be redeemed
- 21:53of sin in Christ the Redeemer. It is not only that you be
- 21:58endowed with power from on high, but that by that same power help
- 22:05others do the same, usually 1 by 1, and by that process become
- 22:13more like the Lord unto eternal life.
- 22:19As I've said so many times already, the supreme expression
- 22:23of intelligence, the crowning achievement of every rational
- 22:28being, is to choose best, to make choices that will invite
- 22:33God's Spirit and produce change and growth within you to become
- 22:38more like the Lord Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father.
- 22:43To choose best is to always remember the Lord Jesus Christ,
- 22:48that you may always have his Spirit to be with you.
- 22:52That's the one thing Choose Christ, choose the Spirit,
- 22:59choose eternal life, choose best and be fruitful helping others
- 23:09do the same.
