- 0:00Speaker 1: All start to Yota presents Off the Bench with Jacob
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hester and Matt Flynn.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Okay, here we go where.
- 0:06Speaker 1: The plays get broken down and science gets denied.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Come off the Bitch.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hour two of Off the Bench Live from the Mercedes
- 0:14Speaker 1: ben So Baton Rouge Studio starts.
- 0:16Speaker 4: Now.
- 0:29Speaker 3: All right, welcome back again. It is our number two
- 0:31Speaker 3: of OTV.
- 0:32Speaker 4: Here on one of four five ESPN Baton Rouge. Let's
- 0:36Speaker 4: go ahead and play the sounder because it's time for
- 0:39Speaker 4: a little munchies.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Get ready to tantalyze your taste buds and leave this
- 0:44Speaker 1: segment hungry. This is Monkey's with Executive chef Michael Johnson.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I love that you a man.
- 0:54Speaker 5: I thought it was hour three. I was getting ahead
- 0:57Speaker 5: of myself audible.
- 0:58Speaker 6: I know.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Look, look being an hour too is a little bit
- 1:01Speaker 4: different obviously. So chef, thank you so much for moving
- 1:04Speaker 4: the schedule around. We appreciate you, know you being flexible here.
- 1:09Speaker 3: So thank you. So yeah, no problem, uh chef?
- 1:13Speaker 4: Right now, you got the football team summer workouts, and
- 1:17Speaker 4: I don't think there was ever a time that I
- 1:19Speaker 4: could throw down some food more than summer workouts, because
- 1:23Speaker 4: my god, you're using a lot of energy out there.
- 1:26Speaker 3: What is this time like at the nutrition.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Center because you know, there's there's a lot of people
- 1:32Speaker 4: that aren't even on campus technically, certainly like the baseball
- 1:36Speaker 4: team now as we know they're they're in Omaha, So
- 1:38Speaker 4: what's the foot traffic like? But what is that food
- 1:41Speaker 4: consumption like here in the summer?
- 1:43Speaker 6: Yeah, actually, breakfast is really busy during the summer because
- 1:47Speaker 6: a lot of times we make football so you know,
- 1:51Speaker 6: in order to give them time for the day to
- 1:53Speaker 6: do other things, we might make breakfast mandatory so that
- 1:57Speaker 6: we know that they're getting their meal in and getting
- 2:01Speaker 6: energy up and getting nutrition in because you know, to
- 2:05Speaker 6: to to some people, you know, when you get super
- 2:08Speaker 6: hot and super exhausted, they don't want to eat right,
- 2:11Speaker 6: and so we want to get the food into them
- 2:13Speaker 6: earlier and in the day.
- 2:14Speaker 7: And so.
- 2:16Speaker 6: Like right now we're probably seeing one hundred and seventy
- 2:19Speaker 6: five people for breakfast and that's that's that's like two
- 2:23Speaker 6: thirds of what we normally see. And usually you know,
- 2:25Speaker 6: like summer can be slow. Yeah, you know, like in
- 2:29Speaker 6: twenty twenty one, summer was kind of slow for us.
- 2:32Speaker 6: But it really depends on you know, postseason play for
- 2:39Speaker 6: baseball depends on track and field. What they're doing there's
- 2:42Speaker 6: because they're still there. They were still you know, compeeding
- 2:44Speaker 6: not so long ago, and sometimes they have like postseason
- 2:48Speaker 6: competitions as well. Yeah, you know, so it I mean,
- 2:52Speaker 6: we're we're pretty busy. Lunch, you know, stays pretty much
- 2:56Speaker 6: the same throughout the year. Dinner will dive off a
- 2:59Speaker 6: little bit just because you know, like once once stuff
- 3:04Speaker 6: gets done and taken care of lifting and everything else.
- 3:07Speaker 6: I think athletes like to, you know, have a little
- 3:10Speaker 6: bit of time to themselves and that's fine. So breakfast
- 3:14Speaker 6: is pretty busy this time of year.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Hashtag munchies.
- 3:17Speaker 4: I finally got an air fryer, wondered if there was
- 3:20Speaker 4: a way to do okra. I made pickles with my
- 3:23Speaker 4: first load from the garden, but I don't need six
- 3:27Speaker 4: jars of pickle okra.
- 3:29Speaker 6: Yeah, so they wanting to know how to fry it
- 3:33Speaker 6: in there or I think it's.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I would assume. I mean it's Louisiana.
- 3:37Speaker 4: I mean, Okra's going in a pot with something else.
- 3:40Speaker 4: But if we're going to eat just okra, that thing's
- 3:42Speaker 4: gonna be fried.
- 3:43Speaker 6: One thing you gotta make sure that you're doing when
- 3:46Speaker 6: you're air frying anything. It's making sure that you're getting
- 3:49Speaker 6: the bread crumb or the flour, you know, saturated with
- 3:52Speaker 6: oil and a deep fry. The difference is is that
- 3:55Speaker 6: you're submerging it in oil, and so it's going to
- 3:58Speaker 6: get the saturation. But what's unhealthy about it is you're
- 4:02Speaker 6: submerging it in the oil, and that oil starts replacing
- 4:05Speaker 6: liquid and cooking into the texture or the skin or
- 4:08Speaker 6: the you know, like if it's a fruit or not
- 4:11Speaker 6: a fruit, but a vegetable or a big piece of
- 4:13Speaker 6: protein that actually will cook.
- 4:15Speaker 3: You can fry a fruit.
- 4:16Speaker 6: Tomatoes, yeah, bananas, So so I'm like, yeah, yeah, man,
- 4:21Speaker 6: I love fried green tomatoes and dashed I just came
- 4:24Speaker 6: from my garden actually, man, yeah, yeah, so they are fry.
- 4:29Speaker 6: I think a lot of people kind of fear away
- 4:31Speaker 6: from that saturation of the flour or the or the
- 4:33Speaker 6: bread crumb on the outside, right, But in reality, if
- 4:36Speaker 6: you wanted to brown up properly and not turn you know,
- 4:40Speaker 6: like kind of dry looking, and you really need to
- 4:44Speaker 6: make sure that you're getting a good saturation of it.
- 4:46Speaker 3: On there, hashtag munchies.
- 4:49Speaker 4: My wife wants to cook fried steak fingers, tonight, what
- 4:52Speaker 4: is chefs recommended cut of steak for that dish? And
- 4:55Speaker 4: this way, this one to me is near and dear
- 4:58Speaker 4: to my heart because my grandmother used to make steak
- 5:01Speaker 4: fingers and my god, I mean just I don't I
- 5:05Speaker 4: don't even know what you used for the breading on there,
- 5:07Speaker 4: but I would go through like seven or eight of
- 5:09Speaker 4: those things.
- 5:10Speaker 3: It is like a core childhood memory for me.
- 5:13Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, yeah, I think for me, what we
- 5:17Speaker 6: usually do for steak fingers is we'll take cube beef
- 5:19Speaker 6: like the same thing that you did make out of
- 5:21Speaker 6: a out out of a chicken fried steak, because it's
- 5:24Speaker 6: already been tender eyed. Because because you're deep frying it
- 5:28Speaker 6: and it's a high intense heat, those muscle tissues tense
- 5:32Speaker 6: up really quickly and can be tough. And so you know,
- 5:36Speaker 6: if you're not using if you're not using chicken fried
- 5:39Speaker 6: steak and good quality chicken fried steak, I would say,
- 5:42Speaker 6: you know, like a flank steak or a skirt steak
- 5:44Speaker 6: sliced on a bias, so that you're cutting some of
- 5:47Speaker 6: that breaking through some of that connective tissue. We've talked
- 5:50Speaker 6: about that before, like if you have a if you
- 5:52Speaker 6: have a tougher cut. When you slice it at an angle,
- 5:56Speaker 6: you're reducing the amount of connective tissue that's actually holding
- 5:59Speaker 6: on onto the protein that's directly above it, right, and
- 6:02Speaker 6: so it mouthfeel and uh and and texturally it loosens
- 6:07Speaker 6: it up a bit. Yep, I would I would say
- 6:10Speaker 6: if you don't have either one of those, maybe at
- 6:11Speaker 6: chuck A chuck can be kind of tough, but you
- 6:14Speaker 6: can tenderize that with a with a mallet or something
- 6:17Speaker 6: and then get a pretty good product out of it.
- 6:19Speaker 6: You know, if you go too soft with tenderloin, you're
- 6:21Speaker 6: wasting your money on a tenderloin. Yeah, my god, I
- 6:28Speaker 6: do like steak.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I was like, man, I'm like about to text my mom. Mom,
- 6:33Speaker 4: do you have Nana's old steak finger recipe? You can
- 6:36Speaker 4: send us down here.
- 6:39Speaker 6: Are you guys dipping? Are you guys dipping fans with
- 6:41Speaker 6: steak fingers or you know, like getting gravy or red.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Soft gravy for sure?
- 6:48Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 6:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean for sure. So uh that might be
- 6:52Speaker 4: on the menu tonight, so uh. Shout out to Scott
- 6:55Speaker 4: for asking a question and shout out to chef for
- 6:56Speaker 4: a great answer. As always, hashtag cheese. What's on Chef's
- 7:01Speaker 4: Father's Day menu?
- 7:03Speaker 6: You know, this is so funny. I'm I totally forgot,
- 7:06Speaker 6: that's the thing. Yeah, you know Father's Day. I always
- 7:10Speaker 6: let my kids kind of decide and we usually end
- 7:12Speaker 6: up having a meal at the house and and my
- 7:14Speaker 6: kids like to cook with me on on on Father's Day.
- 7:16Speaker 6: So it's it's it's funny because somebody to ask me
- 7:19Speaker 6: what I was doing for Father's Day yesterday is like,
- 7:20Speaker 6: I don't know when when is Father's Day? You know,
- 7:24Speaker 6: I usually I learned today.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Children, I learned today because I forgot, So yeah, that
- 7:31Speaker 4: feels right. I mean a great meal at the house,
- 7:34Speaker 4: and you know, allow of them because like you know,
- 7:36Speaker 4: Father's Day, so they can make you.
- 7:38Speaker 3: They can make you happy.
- 7:40Speaker 6: That's right. And and spending time with them, that's trick.
- 7:43Speaker 7: You know.
- 7:43Speaker 6: Like I do have some fresh snapper that I call
- 7:46Speaker 6: it caught over the weekend, So imagine that's going to
- 7:48Speaker 6: get eaten at some point over the weekend, and it
- 7:51Speaker 6: seems like Father's Day would be a perfectly good day
- 7:53Speaker 6: to do it.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Uh, you know, I don't I don't know like what
- 7:56Speaker 4: your schedule is, but you know, speaking of fish, I
- 7:59Speaker 4: think some still Head out. You know, Flynn's new, Like
- 8:02Speaker 4: he's not here right now. You know, he's celebrating his
- 8:04Speaker 4: fortieth birthday. He'll be back next week, so you know,
- 8:07Speaker 4: sooner rather than later. I mean, I think we need
- 8:09Speaker 4: to introduce him to the in studio version of Chef
- 8:12Speaker 4: Michael Johnson.
- 8:13Speaker 6: That would be awesome, man, I would love to do that.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Yeah, my guy, that fish. Oh my god, I think
- 8:19Speaker 3: about that often, Jeff.
- 8:20Speaker 6: That was incredible.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean we could we could run that back.
- 8:24Speaker 4: That's how good. Like, I know you could do so many,
- 8:26Speaker 4: but that was so good. Like I almost want Flynn
- 8:29Speaker 4: to experience what we experienced last year.
- 8:33Speaker 6: Still had it so divergent, you know, like you can
- 8:35Speaker 6: put a lot of stuff with him. I mean, it's
- 8:37Speaker 6: one of the fishes that I really enjoy eating by
- 8:39Speaker 6: itself too, you know, like you can't say that about
- 8:42Speaker 6: all fish, no, but but I do enjoy just grilling
- 8:46Speaker 6: a piece of stillhead and mediant.
- 8:48Speaker 3: All right.
- 8:49Speaker 4: I'm very intrigued with your answer on this one because
- 8:51Speaker 4: I know we've talked about meal prep before and you
- 8:53Speaker 4: lose some of the nutrients. But we have one hashtag munchies.
- 8:56Speaker 4: If you had to meal prep for weight loss specific
- 9:00Speaker 4: what would you make.
- 9:03Speaker 6: Way loss? I have to be careful of what kind
- 9:05Speaker 6: of uh, what kind of direction I give to that
- 9:09Speaker 6: because every human body is a little bit different, right,
- 9:11Speaker 6: So yeah, it depends on your activity.
- 9:15Speaker 4: What your activity like, I guess maybe, like you know,
- 9:18Speaker 4: like what would be healthy? I guess for anybody almost
- 9:21Speaker 4: Like you know what I'm saying, like what food do
- 9:22Speaker 4: you know? Like, no matter what, because you're that's a
- 9:24Speaker 4: great answer, because you're right. Yeah, Like I'm like when
- 9:26Speaker 4: I'm eating healthy, like things work for me don't work
- 9:29Speaker 4: for my wife like vice versas.
- 9:31Speaker 6: So yeah, in a general sense, in order to lose weight,
- 9:36Speaker 6: what you're trying to do is exceed calorie burn compared
- 9:43Speaker 6: to when compared to calorie intake, if that makes sense.
- 9:46Speaker 6: So one of the things that you really can do
- 9:48Speaker 6: easily is reduce your portion sizes. You know, like a
- 9:52Speaker 6: lot of people think that fats are bad for the
- 9:54Speaker 6: human body, but if you're burning them off quickly and easily,
- 9:58Speaker 6: you know, they don't optimize and you don't have to
- 9:59Speaker 6: worry about it as much. So and carbs, you know,
- 10:03Speaker 6: carbs are good for loading. If you're putting up a
- 10:05Speaker 6: whole lot of energy in the and the you know,
- 10:07Speaker 6: like you're gonna burn it off the same thing. You know,
- 10:09Speaker 6: like protein, I would say four ounces in the middle
- 10:13Speaker 6: of the day somewhere in there, depending on your body size.
- 10:16Speaker 6: That you know, lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Man, carbs.
- 10:21Speaker 6: Carbs are not as necessary. They're they're necessary to have burned,
- 10:26Speaker 6: don't get me wrong, but fruits and fruits and vegetables,
- 10:29Speaker 6: and you can get carb heavy fruits, carb heavy vegetables
- 10:32Speaker 6: and get that out of them as well. Corn, for instance,
- 10:36Speaker 6: is a starch heavy vegetable that you can get carbs
- 10:38Speaker 6: out of that, so you're not absolutely missing carbs and
- 10:42Speaker 6: stuff like just potato and rice. Get a back off
- 10:45Speaker 6: on that, I think a little bit. But you know, protein,
- 10:48Speaker 6: proteins and vedges. And if you're working out, it's even
- 10:51Speaker 6: different because then you have to worry about recovery as well.
- 10:54Speaker 6: But if you're talking about a midday lunch, you know,
- 10:57Speaker 6: like taking it with you in the morning to eat
- 10:59Speaker 6: lunch to the middle of the day, backing off on
- 11:02Speaker 6: the portion sizes a little bit, so that the calories
- 11:05Speaker 6: because you have to get you know, like if we're
- 11:07Speaker 6: just talking about your average Joe that goes and has
- 11:11Speaker 6: an an office job. For instance, you know, if they're
- 11:14Speaker 6: sitting at their desk a lot that day, you know,
- 11:16Speaker 6: and they're putting in four thousand calories and a lunch meal,
- 11:18Speaker 6: not only you know, like, yeah, we can back that
- 11:24Speaker 6: down a bit and you know, and and maybe not
- 11:27Speaker 6: take that midday snooze or nap that you're always fighting.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Off, right, Yeah, yeah, that's exactly right. Hashtag munchies. Why
- 11:35Speaker 4: are fall off the bone ribs considered overcooked?
- 11:40Speaker 6: Well, so technically what you're doing there is I think
- 11:44Speaker 6: it depends on what creature, but connective tissues don't start
- 11:48Speaker 6: falling apart. And so there's two things that will break
- 11:52Speaker 6: down connective tissue an extended amount of time or extreme heat.
- 11:57Speaker 6: So you don't want to cook over extreme heat because
- 12:00Speaker 6: that's going to burn, right, So spended amount of time
- 12:03Speaker 6: is going to loosen those connective tissues up. And you
- 12:06Speaker 6: know that if you consider what the color, uh, well,
- 12:11Speaker 6: and not only that, you know, like you're also leaching
- 12:13Speaker 6: nutrient out of out of the protein as well. In
- 12:17Speaker 6: a raw piece of meat, you have the optimum amount,
- 12:20Speaker 6: you know, like that's that's as much nutrient as that
- 12:22Speaker 6: steak it's ever going to have available for you. And
- 12:25Speaker 6: when you cook it over a long amount of time,
- 12:28Speaker 6: you're having this leech that drips out. Now, if you
- 12:31Speaker 6: serve it with a sauce that is made from the drippings,
- 12:34Speaker 6: you can add some of that back in. But if yeah,
- 12:36Speaker 6: you know, technically you are over cooking it. So that's
- 12:40Speaker 6: why you see a lot of sauces and gravies go
- 12:43Speaker 6: back into a stew like that, not just to keep
- 12:46Speaker 6: pre prevent them from drying out, but it's to add
- 12:48Speaker 6: nutrient back.
- 12:49Speaker 4: In hashtag munchies, what is proper hot dog dressing etiquette?
- 12:56Speaker 6: Oh man, this is that's a that's a you know,
- 12:59Speaker 6: I'm a huge fan of the Chicago Dog, but I've
- 13:05Speaker 6: also eaten you know, like I have kind of a
- 13:08Speaker 6: They have this place in Vancouver. It's called a Jappa
- 13:11Speaker 6: Dog and they put like kim chi and Benito flakes
- 13:15Speaker 6: and and with Sobby mayonnaise on it, and you know,
- 13:19Speaker 6: like it was when I was in Vancouver, it was
- 13:22Speaker 6: absolutely fantastic. And you know, like if I go to, uh,
- 13:26Speaker 6: you know, certain places and they have this mad chili dog,
- 13:29Speaker 6: that's you know, like chili cheese, gut bomb. But if
- 13:32Speaker 6: they're doing it really right, I think it's man, I
- 13:35Speaker 6: just started telling me off of a chili dog, you know.
- 13:42Speaker 6: I think it's wherever you're at if they're doing it
- 13:44Speaker 6: best right. And I have a love a relationship with
- 13:47Speaker 6: hot dogs because I served them and cooked them for
- 13:49Speaker 6: so long, and it's still like Pavlov's dog if I
- 13:52Speaker 6: smell a hot dog, you know, the opening of a
- 13:55Speaker 6: of a case of a hot dog, like I'm like,
- 13:58Speaker 6: I gotta have one.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I know exactly what you mean there, Chef.
- 14:02Speaker 4: All right, I'll see if we can get at least
- 14:06Speaker 4: one more. All right, perfect one? I think to end
- 14:08Speaker 4: on hashtag munchies, would you do the nine.
- 14:11Speaker 3: To nine to nine challenge? I don't know what that is,
- 14:14Speaker 3: a landra, would you care to share with chef what
- 14:16Speaker 3: that is?
- 14:17Speaker 2: The nine nine to nine challenge is you go to
- 14:20Speaker 2: a baseball game and each inning you drink a beer
- 14:25Speaker 2: and you eat a hot dog, so you end up
- 14:27Speaker 2: drinking nine beers and nine hot dogs in nine innings.
- 14:31Speaker 6: Can I do it? Or if I want to do it?
- 14:34Speaker 3: Or could you could? Could you do it? Because I could?
- 14:39Speaker 6: I mean the hot Dogs would be oppressed. But I mean,
- 14:43Speaker 6: I do think I could do it. I guess it
- 14:45Speaker 6: depends because I've seen I've been to baseball games that
- 14:47Speaker 6: we're two and a half hours long, and I've been
- 14:48Speaker 6: to ease baseball games that were, like, you know, five
- 14:51Speaker 6: hours long. So I would much prefer it be a
- 14:55Speaker 6: dragging on baseball game to give me a little time
- 14:57Speaker 6: with it. The nine Beers, I know that I could.
- 14:59Speaker 6: I could put back nine hot Dogs, you know, like
- 15:02Speaker 6: as long as they're not you know, stuff stuff full
- 15:05Speaker 6: of stuff poppings by. I don't know that would be
- 15:11Speaker 6: I think I can probably get her done. Just to
- 15:13Speaker 6: be honest with you, if it was a challenge and
- 15:16Speaker 6: there was money on it, I'm not going to go
- 15:18Speaker 6: do that just for.
- 15:19Speaker 1: S and G.
- 15:20Speaker 6: You know.
- 15:23Speaker 4: I feel like if I had to put up like
- 15:25Speaker 4: someone like, you know, hey, you got to put this
- 15:28Speaker 4: person up for this challenge, and if they get it done,
- 15:31Speaker 4: you win a great prize. But if they don't get
- 15:34Speaker 4: it done, like it's doomsday, I do think I would
- 15:37Speaker 4: put up our boy, t Bob.
- 15:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I could see that he'd be a first.
- 15:40Speaker 3: He'd be a first team draft choice.
- 15:42Speaker 6: I can see Ta Bob going Kobeashi Diffeney's hot dog
- 15:46Speaker 6: in the beer and just like crushing it.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Man, I mean he's in Chicago, now, yeah, I mean
- 15:51Speaker 4: so like he's he's in the perfect spot to be
- 15:53Speaker 4: able to see if he could get that done.
- 15:55Speaker 6: Oh man, could you imagine having to eat nine Chicago
- 15:58Speaker 6: dolls back to back?
- 16:00Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Yeah, that is not something I no, that is not
- 16:04Speaker 4: something I don't think anybody would want to try to
- 16:07Speaker 4: knock down.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Chef. We can't thank you enough.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Thanks for being flexible, thanks for moving up the time here,
- 16:12Speaker 4: great questions in the chat as always, and fantastic answers
- 16:15Speaker 4: from Chef. So we'll catch up again next week.
- 16:17Speaker 6: Take care, guys.
- 16:20Speaker 4: All right, we will step away and when we come back,
- 16:24Speaker 4: start to get into Omaha a little bit. Jay Johnson's
- 16:26Speaker 4: going to join us here in about fifteen minutes from now,
- 16:29Speaker 4: so breaking down the College World series. Starting that process
- 16:32Speaker 4: when we jump back here on OTBT, mop the ben.
- 16:38Speaker 4: All right, go to rouss dot com and check out
- 16:42Speaker 4: their weekly savings. Okay, Now, Flynn and I were there
- 16:46Speaker 4: on Friday. We had a great time. We appreciate everyone
- 16:49Speaker 4: that came out. But look, Flynn and I like we
- 16:51Speaker 4: were going like it was great. We went in and
- 16:55Speaker 4: it was warm that day. We were outside and we
- 16:57Speaker 4: go in. We got some of high We came back outside.
- 17:00Speaker 4: We were a little bit hungry. We went in, we
- 17:01Speaker 4: got some sushi. We came back out. We're like, hey,
- 17:04Speaker 4: you know, let's go get a little protein. So we
- 17:06Speaker 4: went back. Then we got I mean, like so many
- 17:07Speaker 4: different options for you at Rouses and right now when
- 17:11Speaker 4: you go to the website, like to pull up their
- 17:13Speaker 4: weekly add it's just a great tool. You put in
- 17:15Speaker 4: your zip code, it's going to pull up the closest
- 17:18Speaker 4: Rouses to you right and then you click on it
- 17:20Speaker 4: and it's going to pull it up right in front
- 17:21Speaker 4: of you. Like fresh Buy corns on sale right now
- 17:25Speaker 4: eighty percent lean ground beef only three point eighty seven
- 17:28Speaker 4: a pound right now, so you're saving over two dollars.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Great savings.
- 17:32Speaker 4: You're saving over two dollars on that bicolor corn as well.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Go to Rouses dot com.
- 17:49Speaker 1: From the locker room to the airwaves, it's off the
- 17:51Speaker 1: bench with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn.
- 18:05Speaker 4: All right, welcome back again OTB here on this Thursday morning,
- 18:09Speaker 4: taking a look at the latest odds to go win
- 18:13Speaker 4: the national championship at the College World Series Arkansas plus
- 18:18Speaker 4: two hundred, LSU plus two twenty five, and then you
- 18:21Speaker 4: have a dip and it goes plus six hundred for
- 18:25Speaker 4: Coastal Carolina, plus six fifty for Oregon State, plus eight
- 18:29Speaker 4: hundred for UCLA, and then another drop plus fourteen hundred
- 18:33Speaker 4: for Arizona, plus sixteen hundred for Louisville, and plus thirty
- 18:37Speaker 4: five hundred for Murray State. So I mean, obviously the
- 18:42Speaker 4: two favorites as we know, are playing each other in
- 18:45Speaker 4: round number one. If I was to take LSU and
- 18:49Speaker 4: Arkansas off the board and I said, okay, I'm giving
- 18:53Speaker 4: you one hundred dollars and you can go play whatever
- 18:56Speaker 4: team you want. Now, that's not just to say, you know,
- 19:00Speaker 4: go play the team with the third best odd It's
- 19:02Speaker 4: like if you won't like to maybe get a little
- 19:05Speaker 4: out there and get a little juice, get a little value.
- 19:07Speaker 4: If I gave you one hundred dollars to bet on
- 19:09Speaker 4: any team outside of Arkansas and l s U, who
- 19:12Speaker 4: would it be? U? C?
- 19:14Speaker 3: L A Coastal for you?
- 19:16Speaker 5: You see, LA, what's nine hundred? They looked really good
- 19:19Speaker 5: in the Super Regional. I mean they've won a lot
- 19:22Speaker 5: of games this year. Like, that's a that's a team
- 19:25Speaker 5: that's a little sneaky. I think Coastal is better, but
- 19:30Speaker 5: like u C.
- 19:30Speaker 8: L A has I mean LA those Coastals. Uh, I'm
- 19:34Speaker 8: still but I mean it's pretty good.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Yeah, look, I don't I don't hate that one for UCLA.
- 19:39Speaker 4: They do get to play Murray State, that is the
- 19:41Speaker 4: four seed. Now if they win, they got to play
- 19:44Speaker 4: the winner of l s U Arkansas. And if that's LSU,
- 19:47Speaker 4: you're going against Anthony Ianton, So you know, tough matchup
- 19:51Speaker 4: for them.
- 19:52Speaker 3: I'm going to Arizona. Yeah, that's another what they like.
- 19:55Speaker 4: They just beat maybe the hottest team in the country
- 19:59Speaker 4: after getting eighteen to two in the first game in
- 20:02Speaker 4: Chapel Hill, fourteen hundred feels like incredible odds. I'm shocked
- 20:06Speaker 4: that they're that far behind UCLA. And they get to
- 20:10Speaker 4: open up against the Louisville who, outside of Murray State,
- 20:14Speaker 4: second worst side to win. Yeah, it feels like a
- 20:16Speaker 4: decent matchup for them as well.
- 20:18Speaker 8: That's true.
- 20:19Speaker 3: I put my one hundred dollars.
- 20:22Speaker 5: The path isn't badres either, because like it's all about
- 20:25Speaker 5: the path, right, because at least amount of games you
- 20:27Speaker 5: lose at least number of arms you have to use.
- 20:29Speaker 8: Like I don't I don't hate that either.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Like I and I love Coastal Uh, but they face
- 20:34Speaker 4: or Coastal Oregon State, it's gonna be a heavyweight out. Yeah,
- 20:38Speaker 4: that's gonna be one of the like everybody's talking about
- 20:40Speaker 4: LSU and Arkansas and I get it. But that game
- 20:43Speaker 4: right there, that's quality baseball. That is going to be
- 20:46Speaker 4: I think just a full nine inning slugfast Yeah, like
- 20:52Speaker 4: they're gonna there's gonna be some counterpunching in that.
- 20:54Speaker 2: So the pitching is that's gonna be like a good
- 20:57Speaker 2: pitching matchup Oregon State and uh Coastal Carolina, especially if
- 21:03Speaker 2: Oregon States Dax Whitney's going out there. Coastal Carolina has
- 21:08Speaker 2: like three legit starters on their team and their team
- 21:13Speaker 2: e er A is three twenty six. Now, like they're hitting,
- 21:17Speaker 2: they're good hitters. They got a team batting average of
- 21:20Speaker 2: two eighty nine. But it's not what I don't think
- 21:25Speaker 2: it's what got them here. Like they're pitching is really
- 21:28Speaker 2: like what I'm looking at and what has me confident
- 21:32Speaker 2: in them. But I mean, yeah, that Oregon State matchup
- 21:36Speaker 2: is gonna be a tough one for them, But I
- 21:38Speaker 2: just feel really good about them, and that I mean
- 21:41Speaker 2: I feel great about LSU, like I have a really
- 21:44Speaker 2: really good feeling about but something about Coastal they feel
- 21:48Speaker 2: hot to me.
- 21:51Speaker 4: I mean, Coastal is like one of those teams that
- 21:56Speaker 4: I think if you're just kind of a common like
- 22:00Speaker 4: you only pay attention during the postseason, casual college baseball fan,
- 22:04Speaker 4: like you're still thinking like mid major, mid major, mid major, yeah,
- 22:07Speaker 4: when in fact, the Sun Belt's a really good baseball conference.
- 22:10Speaker 4: I think we all know that certainly here. But also
- 22:13Speaker 4: like when you've had a run and you've gone and
- 22:16Speaker 4: you've won a national championship, yeah, like that just gives
- 22:19Speaker 4: you the ultimate belief. And it doesn't matter that none
- 22:21Speaker 4: of those players were obviously there the last time they
- 22:23Speaker 4: did it, but the fact that you have done it
- 22:26Speaker 4: in your program history, like, well why not us? We've
- 22:28Speaker 4: won fifty three games. Yeah, so yeah, coast was not
- 22:32Speaker 4: a bad play here.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Either.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Also, like, sorry, no, go ahead, they have since they
- 22:39Speaker 2: won in twenty sixteen, right, six Yeah, twenty sixteen.
- 22:44Speaker 3: They was that long ago already, right.
- 22:46Speaker 8: There was.
- 22:48Speaker 2: A gap between like in twenty seventeen, they didn't make
- 22:50Speaker 2: it to the tournament, and then they made it twenty eighteen,
- 22:54Speaker 2: twenty nineteen, didn't make it for two years, and then
- 22:56Speaker 2: since twenty twenty two, they've made the tournament every season
- 23:00Speaker 2: since then. So but the last like actual College World
- 23:06Speaker 2: Series appearance that they had was in twenty sixteen, so
- 23:08Speaker 2: they would always lose like in the regional. But still like,
- 23:13Speaker 2: that's a program that is pretty I mean, you're making
- 23:16Speaker 2: it into the postseason pretty much every season.
- 23:18Speaker 8: It's pretty solid.
- 23:19Speaker 4: Yeah, And I did mention it it is I think
- 23:22Speaker 4: I had that it's Louisville, Oregon State, Arizona, Coastal. Right, Yeah, yeah,
- 23:26Speaker 4: I said that backwards a little bit earlier, but even
- 23:29Speaker 4: more so for Coastal in that one. Yeah, I was
- 23:33Speaker 4: thinking that the way the bracket matched up. But either way,
- 23:36Speaker 4: like I'm that portion of the bracket that is going
- 23:39Speaker 4: to be, like I fully expect it, like Coastal and
- 23:42Speaker 4: Oregon State to have some type of a battle at
- 23:45Speaker 4: some point there in Omaha.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Well, if you remember, like back in twenty sixteen, the
- 23:49Speaker 5: Coastal team they play a lot like they did this
- 23:52Speaker 5: year because that team like didn't have a ton of
- 23:54Speaker 5: power hitters on it. They could just all get on base.
- 23:57Speaker 5: They've only hit like sixty sixty five home runs last year.
- 24:00Speaker 5: Like not bad, not great. They're just teams that get
- 24:03Speaker 5: on base. They're good on the base pass, they got
- 24:06Speaker 5: good pitching. This is exactly how they were in sixteen.
- 24:12Speaker 3: That the top portion up there is.
- 24:15Speaker 4: It's not going to be as easy as people are
- 24:17Speaker 4: making like Bracket one is not going to be. I
- 24:21Speaker 4: know everybody's talking about bracket too because LSU and Arkansas
- 24:23Speaker 4: are in there. But going like whoever goes through there,
- 24:27Speaker 4: you're gonna have to go through Coastal or Oregon State,
- 24:30Speaker 4: even if it's one of the other teams that we're
- 24:32Speaker 4: talking about like each other. It's gonna be tough. It
- 24:34Speaker 4: is not going to be just because all these top
- 24:37Speaker 4: seeds got knocked out. Everybody thinks they know exactly how
- 24:39Speaker 4: it's going to play out there.
- 24:41Speaker 3: But look at that schedule.
- 24:43Speaker 4: It is Coastal Carolina Game one versus Arizona. That is
- 24:48Speaker 4: going to be the first game. I believe that's a
- 24:50Speaker 4: noon first pitch here locally Central time. You've got Oregon
- 24:54Speaker 4: State and Louisville. That's gonna be the nightcap and then
- 24:56Speaker 4: of course Game three is going to be the early game.
- 24:59Speaker 4: It's gonna be CLA and Murray State and then Arkansas
- 25:02Speaker 4: and LSU. So a lot to break down, a lot
- 25:05Speaker 4: to get to. I wrote coach the old thirty minute warning,
- 25:10Speaker 4: hating her back from old Jay. We'll call him. We'll
- 25:13Speaker 4: see if Jay is ready to go. He's kind of
- 25:15Speaker 4: got something going on right now, but.
- 25:17Speaker 3: We will see.
- 25:18Speaker 4: He did confirm on Gosh Tuesday, like Tuesday night, my hey, coach,
- 25:22Speaker 4: like I know, Omaha's kind of different.
- 25:24Speaker 3: We do. Thursdays were good, he said, we're good.
- 25:27Speaker 4: We'll call coach Jay Johnson, LSU head and baseball coach
- 25:30Speaker 4: when we come back here on OTV. Off the bench,
- 25:35Speaker 4: I go to Boudres Electrical dot Com. Bujo's Eelectrical dot
- 25:39Speaker 4: com is the website where you can go get that
- 25:41Speaker 4: free generat quote.
- 25:42Speaker 3: It is in the top right corner of the website.
- 25:45Speaker 4: You go fill out the information, have them come out
- 25:47Speaker 4: look at your space, kind of give you an idea.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Of what they can do for you.
- 25:51Speaker 4: One thing I know that they can do for you
- 25:53Speaker 4: is give you that ultimate piece of mind because during
- 25:57Speaker 4: storm season and it is a coming, well, what do
- 26:00Speaker 4: you worry about losing power, not having power for an
- 26:03Speaker 4: extended period of time, But if you have that whole
- 26:06Speaker 4: home generator from Boudreau's, you know exactly what's going to
- 26:10Speaker 4: happen when that power goes out.
- 26:11Speaker 3: You're gonna hear the generator.
- 26:13Speaker 4: It's going to kick on immediately, and you're not going
- 26:15Speaker 4: to miss a beat. It is going to be like
- 26:17Speaker 4: every single day for you in your home. You got
- 26:21Speaker 4: ac refrigerators, going take a hot shower, right, so like
- 26:26Speaker 4: the ultimate peace of mind even during hurricane season.
- 26:29Speaker 3: More power, more protection.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Go to the website today, boudros Electrical dot com.
- 26:40Speaker 1: What you're doing.
- 26:42Speaker 8: Really, you know, coming over right?
- 26:48Speaker 1: Something you want to know from the locker room to
- 26:50Speaker 1: the airwaves. Gets off the bench with Jacob Hester and
- 26:54Speaker 1: Matt Flynn.
- 26:56Speaker 4: Give me ten minutes, be ready, a little thing I think,
- 27:03Speaker 4: Tell me what you want to do.
- 27:04Speaker 7: Get seven o'clock.
- 27:07Speaker 6: Mychopped up in the streets.
- 27:11Speaker 4: All right, welcome back, heah OTV one of four five
- 27:13Speaker 4: ESPN Baton Rouge.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Still trying to get with her cat.
- 27:18Speaker 4: J Johnson a new in the thirty minute reminder didn't
- 27:22Speaker 4: get answered.
- 27:23Speaker 3: We might be in some trouble. We might have an issue.
- 27:27Speaker 4: It's okay. We've still got time. We've got an hour
- 27:30Speaker 4: and a half left. You know, we got some guests
- 27:32Speaker 4: coming up. But if it's like you move stuff around,
- 27:33Speaker 4: we can move stuff around if it's you know, even
- 27:36Speaker 4: if it's at nine fifteen, and we keep it tight. Yeah,
- 27:40Speaker 4: keep our guests tight, even if it's at nine forty five.
- 27:43Speaker 4: We'll see if we can get with coach.
- 27:45Speaker 2: I'm not double calling though, No, no, I'm not double
- 27:48Speaker 2: calling j Johnson.
- 27:51Speaker 8: Well he's in Omaha. I would do it if he wasn't.
- 27:56Speaker 4: Yeah, this is what happens, you know, when you try
- 28:00Speaker 4: to overprepare, like on Tuesday or like hey two days
- 28:03Speaker 4: from now, you know we're gonna link back up or
- 28:07Speaker 4: we go it's like, yeah, you know, send them in
- 28:09Speaker 4: the thirty minute reminder.
- 28:10Speaker 3: It's like maybe, you know, maybe we just.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Fly by the seat of our pants like Tabab did
- 28:17Speaker 4: and texting five minutes before. Right, It's okay, we'll find
- 28:23Speaker 4: a way to talk with Jay Johnson.
- 28:25Speaker 3: I am confident in that again.
- 28:28Speaker 4: Coastal Carolina, Arizona, Oregon State, Louisville, Ucla, Murray State, Arkansas,
- 28:33Speaker 4: and LSU.
- 28:34Speaker 3: And I was sitting there thinking.
- 28:37Speaker 4: The like we always talk about, like how important it
- 28:40Speaker 4: is to win the first game. That's for everybody, I
- 28:41Speaker 4: guess the obvious statement. And for Arkansas and LSU to
- 28:44Speaker 4: win that first game because of how you know, important
- 28:48Speaker 4: it would be for their pitching matchup in game number
- 28:50Speaker 4: eight of the College World Series, which would be the
- 28:52Speaker 4: winner's bracket. But look, it's baseball, so who knows what happens.
- 28:57Speaker 4: But like if I had to say, like a must
- 29:00Speaker 4: win game as much as Arkansas LSU would have to
- 29:02Speaker 4: be UCLA Murray State, yeah I do. Only I don't
- 29:06Speaker 4: think either one of those teams wants to face Arkansas
- 29:08Speaker 4: or LSU in the loser's bracket, knowing who they would
- 29:11Speaker 4: put on the mound compared to who they would be
- 29:13Speaker 4: able to throw out there, like that feels as must
- 29:16Speaker 4: win as possible, certainly, you know, if you want to
- 29:19Speaker 4: keep the Cinderella season alive from Murray State.
- 29:23Speaker 8: I'm trying to look at I'm trying to pull out
- 29:24Speaker 8: the bracket.
- 29:26Speaker 4: I just printed it off, so because the one I
- 29:29Speaker 4: was looking at was busted a little bit earlier, so
- 29:31Speaker 4: I just went ahead and printed that thing off.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Little old school. Sometimes technology can fail.
- 29:35Speaker 8: I don't love the way that brackets look on computers.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Well, no, here's the thing. Here's the problem with the
- 29:39Speaker 4: NCAA's website. Right, it's got so on the like on
- 29:45Speaker 4: their actual website, Like when you look at it gets
- 29:47Speaker 4: confusion because it has Oregon State.
- 29:48Speaker 3: And Coastals next to each other.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Yeah, Arizona Louisville next to each other, right, which those
- 29:53Speaker 4: teams aren't playing each other in the first round. But
- 29:56Speaker 4: then it has Arkansas and LSUE next to each other
- 29:58Speaker 4: they're playing and UCLA Murray State they're playing, right, and
- 30:01Speaker 4: so this has got to be like twice like I'll
- 30:03Speaker 4: start talking about like, oh yeah, that's that's their mess
- 30:06Speaker 4: up on their website, their official NCAA website. So it
- 30:09Speaker 4: does get kind of confusing. That's why I look, kids,
- 30:12Speaker 4: don't hate on the old people. Just go print it
- 30:15Speaker 4: off for you so you don't have to worry about technology.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Can't wait for Coastal Oregon State though, if that does.
- 30:23Speaker 8: Happen, that's gonna be a really good matchup.
- 30:26Speaker 4: Is the winner of Like the winner of that is
- 30:31Speaker 4: going to be in the championship series. Yeah, I fully
- 30:34Speaker 4: fully believe that, like the winner of if they meet
- 30:37Speaker 4: up whoever wins that first game.
- 30:39Speaker 3: I truly believe they're going to be in the champions Well.
- 30:41Speaker 5: You know, it's funny, like everyone's talking about the bottom
- 30:44Speaker 5: part of the bracket, and I get it, but it's
- 30:46Speaker 5: always oh LSU Arkansas, the two juggernauts of the sport.
- 30:50Speaker 5: Top part of that bracket might be the more competitive
- 30:53Speaker 5: bracket in my opinion, like Coastal Arizona, Oregon State, Louisville,
- 30:57Speaker 5: like all four of those teams, they're good, Like they're
- 31:02Speaker 5: better than they're getting credit for. Also, yeah, I mean,
- 31:06Speaker 5: the longer you can stay in that winner's bracket, the
- 31:09Speaker 5: better you are off. And I agree, I like, I
- 31:11Speaker 5: like Oregon State, Coastal Carolina. But I don't know, man,
- 31:15Speaker 5: that's a competitive side of the bracket. That's a part
- 31:17Speaker 5: that a lot of people aren't talking about.
- 31:19Speaker 4: No, they're not because you got the headliner, you have
- 31:21Speaker 4: LSU Arkansas. And again like even that's not just here,
- 31:24Speaker 4: that's like series six M. When we're breaking it all down,
- 31:26Speaker 4: like LSU Arkansas, everybody won't talk about it.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Nobody who comes on, they're like, all right, let's start
- 31:30Speaker 3: there with that game. And I get it.
- 31:31Speaker 4: I understand it, Like you're talking about two aces like
- 31:35Speaker 4: massive programs and rivals and like the whole Like I
- 31:39Speaker 4: get all of it, but I'm sure Bracket one's actually
- 31:43Speaker 4: probably enjoying all that.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Bracket one does have some heavy hitters there.
- 31:48Speaker 4: Murray State is the fourth four seed to get to
- 31:51Speaker 4: this point, to get to the College World Series.
- 31:53Speaker 3: I think ORL.
- 31:54Speaker 4: Roberts was the last one, right three? When else you
- 31:58Speaker 4: won it all? Do we know the only four seed
- 32:02Speaker 4: to ever win it? Yeah, thousand and eight, so the
- 32:11Speaker 4: year before LA Shoot wins it in nine. So yeah,
- 32:14Speaker 4: they entered the NCAA Tournament as a four seed in
- 32:16Speaker 4: the regional and then they went.
- 32:19Speaker 3: I believe it was Georgia.
- 32:21Speaker 4: I think they beat Georgia in the in the College
- 32:24Speaker 4: World Series finals, so they remained the only four seed
- 32:27Speaker 4: ever to win it.
- 32:28Speaker 5: So I believe they were the very last team. I
- 32:33Speaker 5: believe they were the very last team in the tournament,
- 32:35Speaker 5: like the the last seed.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:38Speaker 4: So again, like we talked about with Coastal, they've seen
- 32:41Speaker 4: their team go do it. If you're Murray State, how
- 32:43Speaker 4: many times do you think their coach after he gets
- 32:45Speaker 4: done mowing the grass has talked to his team about
- 32:48Speaker 4: Fresno State going to win it as a four seed.
- 32:51Speaker 4: So's he's always good to like if you're trying to
- 32:55Speaker 4: motivate your team, motivate your program to be able to
- 32:57Speaker 4: have like, hey, this has happened before, it can't happen again.
- 33:01Speaker 4: So again that Murray State UCLA game that is going
- 33:04Speaker 4: to be game number three.
- 33:05Speaker 3: That will be Saturday at noon.
- 33:08Speaker 4: So all right, we are going to catch up with
- 33:11Speaker 4: the head coach of the LSU Fighting Tigers boots on
- 33:15Speaker 4: the ground there in Omaha.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Coach, we truly always.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Appreciate your time, but certainly while you're trying to get
- 33:21Speaker 4: ready for the College World Series. And so thanks for
- 33:24Speaker 4: hopping on. And how was traveling yesterday? How's it been
- 33:27Speaker 4: so far?
- 33:28Speaker 7: It's always the best travel day of the year, that's
- 33:30Speaker 7: for sure. Got here and got over to the stadium
- 33:34Speaker 7: and took that in for a minute, and then well
- 33:37Speaker 7: the right to practice, so kind of back to business
- 33:40Speaker 7: as usual and looking forward to a good day to day.
- 33:43Speaker 4: So, coach, you have had players that have been there
- 33:45Speaker 4: before and they've been in that moment, But what was
- 33:48Speaker 4: it like for the players like you watching them walk
- 33:51Speaker 4: into that stadium for the first time, because that's one
- 33:54Speaker 4: of the great things about college baseball is everybody knows
- 33:58Speaker 4: where the championship is going to be played, and so
- 34:00Speaker 4: you know that it's in the back of your mind
- 34:02Speaker 4: and you can visualize yourself there. It's not like football
- 34:04Speaker 4: and basketball where it rotates, you know, to different cities,
- 34:08Speaker 4: different venues. What was it like for you to kind
- 34:10Speaker 4: of see those guys for the first time that hadn't
- 34:12Speaker 4: been there before.
- 34:14Speaker 7: Yeah, it's pretty awesome. And there's eight players you know
- 34:17Speaker 7: that were on that team in twenty twenty three and
- 34:20Speaker 7: everybody else it's their first time, and you know, they've
- 34:23Speaker 7: worked hard. And I said this a few times last week,
- 34:26Speaker 7: like this team deserved to be here, whether we won
- 34:28Speaker 7: two games or not last weekend. And so for me,
- 34:32Speaker 7: if there was any kind of pressure, that was it.
- 34:35Speaker 7: I felt like this team earned their way to Omaha
- 34:38Speaker 7: by how they did everything, you know, on a daily
- 34:40Speaker 7: basis through the fall, winter, early spring and then obviously
- 34:43Speaker 7: this season. So it was pretty awesome, you know, just
- 34:46Speaker 7: staying on the dugout step, watch them walk out there,
- 34:49Speaker 7: walk a lap around the field on a warning track,
- 34:51Speaker 7: take pictures, and you know, and then also we talked about,
- 34:55Speaker 7: you know, you know, take it in and see yourself here,
- 34:58Speaker 7: because this is where it's on. It's back to baseball
- 35:00Speaker 7: on Saturday.
- 35:02Speaker 3: And we all know how it's going to go down.
- 35:04Speaker 3: On Saturday.
- 35:05Speaker 4: You got the primetime game against a team that you
- 35:07Speaker 4: know very well and coach. One of the things I
- 35:09Speaker 4: always am intrigued by is the way that you prepare
- 35:12Speaker 4: for your opponent. I really like you take like a
- 35:16Speaker 4: football coach approach, like you're always watching tape like nothing
- 35:19Speaker 4: is going to be you know, not looked at and
- 35:23Speaker 4: not evaluated in your process getting ready for your game
- 35:27Speaker 4: plan there, and you know this team incredibly well, Like
- 35:29Speaker 4: you just played this Arkansas team a month ago, so
- 35:33Speaker 4: when you're preparing for this game, you have that to
- 35:36Speaker 4: lean on.
- 35:37Speaker 3: But like, is there like a fine line of Okay, let's.
- 35:39Speaker 4: Don't lean on that experience too much even though it
- 35:41Speaker 4: was just four weeks ago. Like, let's also make sure
- 35:45Speaker 4: that we're watching the regional the super regional and taking
- 35:48Speaker 4: that information just as much as we take our series
- 35:50Speaker 4: against them.
- 35:52Speaker 7: Yeah, for sure. And I kind of have a rule
- 35:54Speaker 7: when you play a team a second time or play
- 35:56Speaker 7: them in the postseason, is like start over and do
- 36:00Speaker 7: it like you haven't played them before. And you know,
- 36:03Speaker 7: young people change a lot today, you know, let alone
- 36:07Speaker 7: four weeks ago. And then the other factor is that game.
- 36:11Speaker 7: Those games were played at our stadium, you know, and
- 36:15Speaker 7: that's a different animal. And I know that obviously because
- 36:19Speaker 7: with the support we get. The other part is when
- 36:21Speaker 7: we go on the road, things are much tougher.
- 36:24Speaker 6: Like that's just the reality of it.
- 36:25Speaker 7: So you know, there's some things that I did go
- 36:28Speaker 7: back and watch that series, at least from our pitching,
- 36:31Speaker 7: so they're hitting, you know, to look at some things,
- 36:34Speaker 7: but really really focused.
- 36:36Speaker 6: On their last four games that they've played.
- 36:41Speaker 4: Yeah, coach, and we've talked about kind of the you
- 36:44Speaker 4: know what the pitching matchups probably are are going to
- 36:47Speaker 4: look like.
- 36:48Speaker 3: And when you're a hitter and you're going back and.
- 36:51Speaker 4: Let's say that it is you know, Zachary's going to
- 36:53Speaker 4: be on the mound for Arkansas, Like how would like
- 36:56Speaker 4: how do you study film as a hitter? Like I'm
- 36:58Speaker 4: always curious like that, Like, Okay, well he got me
- 37:00Speaker 4: out with that pitch last time, and like, in my
- 37:03Speaker 4: mind's going to go back to that pitch, but maybe
- 37:05Speaker 4: he's going to think that I'm thinking that he's gonna
- 37:07Speaker 4: throw a different pitch, like at the mind games of
- 37:10Speaker 4: being in the batter's box, it gets a pitcher like that,
- 37:12Speaker 4: a very talented pitcher. Like, how do you tell your
- 37:15Speaker 4: guys to maybe look at film when they're watching that
- 37:17Speaker 4: of a guy that they faced before who is a
- 37:19Speaker 4: really talented pitcher.
- 37:21Speaker 7: Yeah, I think you know, familiarity is good on that side.
- 37:25Speaker 7: I mean because when something comes out of his hand,
- 37:27Speaker 7: maybe recognize it a little bit sooner. And that's where
- 37:30Speaker 7: the advantage lies. I mean as far as did not
- 37:34Speaker 7: pitches and guessing. If you start guessing against the guy
- 37:37Speaker 7: of zach Rude or Kate Anderson's caliber, like, you're gonna
- 37:41Speaker 7: have a hard time. Like you're gonna end up with
- 37:42Speaker 7: twenty five. You're gonna end up in.
- 37:44Speaker 6: Like the worst blackjack odds.
- 37:46Speaker 7: Casino in Vegas or something like that. So it's just
- 37:50Speaker 7: about seeing the ball, eliminating pitches, you know, getting your
- 37:53Speaker 7: pitch to hit, taking balls, you know, bat on with
- 37:56Speaker 7: two strikes, you know, make it hard on him and
- 37:59Speaker 7: it's a tough place. Four runs too. Like That's that's
- 38:01Speaker 7: another element of this game. It's very intriguing with two
- 38:04Speaker 7: really good, good pictures going. So I think the other focuses.
- 38:07Speaker 7: We've got to be ready to win a close game.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Well, I mean, speaking of a close game, I think
- 38:12Speaker 4: there's obviously some pictures that's all season long you've brought
- 38:16Speaker 4: in in those situations to close out a game. But
- 38:18Speaker 4: if we go back a week, you didn't have to
- 38:20Speaker 4: use those pictures. Zach Cowan Case and Evans like coach,
- 38:24Speaker 4: if I would have told you you would have swept
- 38:25Speaker 4: the series in a super regional and neither one of
- 38:28Speaker 4: those guys has to toe the rubber, I mean, I
- 38:30Speaker 4: would assume you would be pretty surprised, surprised.
- 38:34Speaker 7: Happy, you know, and for you know, maybe that meant
- 38:39Speaker 7: that the scores were, you know, kind of what they
- 38:42Speaker 7: were where we had a little breathing room. The other thing, too,
- 38:45Speaker 7: is that that's an interesting deal to manage because you
- 38:48Speaker 7: have to protect yourself of a third game as well.
- 38:51Speaker 7: Now we had a real plan with how we were
- 38:53Speaker 7: going to use those guys in game two. Hey, Cooper
- 38:56Speaker 7: Williams came in and did a great job to help,
- 39:00Speaker 7: you know, really really close the gap between Anthony and
- 39:03Speaker 7: the end of the game. And I mean they just
- 39:05Speaker 7: Chase was throwing like one hundred and twenty miles an
- 39:08Speaker 7: hour and like they weren't seeing it.
- 39:09Speaker 4: So we just kind of rode that out so coach,
- 39:13Speaker 4: I mean Chase shores like electric City when he came in,
- 39:17Speaker 4: like you could feel it in the stadium. Like I
- 39:19Speaker 4: always say this, like if you could bottle up that
- 39:21Speaker 4: energy and sell it, you can name your price on it.
- 39:24Speaker 3: It was.
- 39:25Speaker 4: I mean it was incredible and you could feel it
- 39:27Speaker 4: throughout the stadium. And I mean he's already a large human.
- 39:31Speaker 4: He looked like he was eight foot tall out there
- 39:33Speaker 4: on the mound. And I was joking yesterday, like in
- 39:35Speaker 4: youth baseball, try to get him a throw stracks, like, hey,
- 39:38Speaker 4: fingers in the mid, fingers in the mid. I'm like,
- 39:40Speaker 4: I think he actually could put his fingers in the mid.
- 39:42Speaker 4: I mean, he looks so intimidating out there. And that's
- 39:45Speaker 4: a player that you and I have talked about, right,
- 39:47Speaker 4: He's coming back from a major injury, and so a
- 39:50Speaker 4: lot of times it's like we got the meat heead
- 39:52Speaker 4: mindset of Okay, he's back, so he needs to be
- 39:54Speaker 4: where he was before he got injured. It's just not
- 39:57Speaker 4: that easy, right, And that's just a player that we
- 39:59Speaker 4: can see each and every time he goes out there
- 40:01Speaker 4: gaining more confidence, more belief that you know, his arm
- 40:05Speaker 4: is where it's supposed to be, coach, because I mean
- 40:08Speaker 4: he came in and the confidence that he had it
- 40:10Speaker 4: was incredible.
- 40:12Speaker 7: Yeah, one thing we talk a lot about is with
- 40:15Speaker 7: the players is use your experience well. And he had
- 40:18Speaker 7: a tough outing in the regional and you know, he
- 40:21Speaker 7: used that well. Like I could tell all week he
- 40:23Speaker 7: was locked in and ready to go. And you know,
- 40:27Speaker 7: there was there was one way you know that that
- 40:30Speaker 7: performance was going to go whenever I gave him the ball,
- 40:32Speaker 7: whether it was earlier in the game or at the
- 40:34Speaker 7: end of the game like that. And you know, like
- 40:36Speaker 7: I said, I kind of had a plan laid out
- 40:38Speaker 7: of how we're going to use those other guys you mentioned,
- 40:41Speaker 7: and then it was like, now that's that's let's let
- 40:45Speaker 7: big man finish this out. And I'm happy for him
- 40:47Speaker 7: and proud of him because he's a big part of this.
- 40:49Speaker 7: Like that's one of the first big recruits that we
- 40:52Speaker 7: got when I got the job here. And you know,
- 40:55Speaker 7: he's persevered to that injury. You know, he was a
- 40:57Speaker 7: great team guy even though he was hurt. When we
- 41:00Speaker 7: won the national championship, he worked hard in his rehab.
- 41:04Speaker 7: You know, he cares about succeeding to the team a lot,
- 41:07Speaker 7: and that was a great way, great way for a
- 41:10Speaker 7: super reasonal and finish up with him on the mountain.
- 41:13Speaker 4: Catching up with LSU head baseball coach Jay Johnson here
- 41:16Speaker 4: on OTB coach. One of the things about Omaha is
- 41:19Speaker 4: you don't know how long you're going to be there,
- 41:21Speaker 4: and you know how it goes because y'all went all
- 41:24Speaker 4: the way obviously just a couple of years ago, you
- 41:26Speaker 4: won the whole thing, you played the maximum amount of
- 41:28Speaker 4: games as a coach. Though, when you don't know that situation,
- 41:32Speaker 4: how do you make sure that your team and everybody
- 41:35Speaker 4: around the team stays in the moment and doesn't worry
- 41:38Speaker 4: about how long you're going to be there or start
- 41:40Speaker 4: to look ahead to what possibly could happen.
- 41:43Speaker 7: Well, I think you know, it's kind of how we
- 41:45Speaker 7: train him on a yearly basis, if you will, like
- 41:49Speaker 7: you know this pitch this game. This game's a Game
- 41:53Speaker 7: seven of the World Series or part of the fifty
- 41:55Speaker 7: six game playoff, and the quality of the teams here
- 42:00Speaker 7: catch your attention, and so I don't think that's really
- 42:04Speaker 7: necessarily a thing, and that's certainly the case with the
- 42:06Speaker 7: first game, and really excited about that. But every team
- 42:10Speaker 7: here is a championship team. So and then you know,
- 42:13Speaker 7: I always feel like things wherever I can. And you
- 42:17Speaker 7: know that movie at Hoosier's, you know where Gene Hackman,
- 42:20Speaker 7: you know he's talking about tournament play like you can't
- 42:22Speaker 7: talk about the next step. So you've climbed the one
- 42:24Speaker 7: in front of you, right, Like all those things are
- 42:26Speaker 7: really real. We've we've talked a lot about like, man,
- 42:30Speaker 7: there's a lot of cool things that come along with
- 42:32Speaker 7: here being here, and I want you to enjoy those
- 42:34Speaker 7: and have the maturity and self discipline to switch the twitch,
- 42:39Speaker 7: the mindset, you know when it's under prepared and it's
- 42:41Speaker 7: time to execute. And I have full trust in our
- 42:43Speaker 7: team to be able.
- 42:44Speaker 6: To do that.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Can't wait to watch a coach. I mean, it is
- 42:47Speaker 3: going to be in prime time. It's going to be.
- 42:49Speaker 4: Against teams that know each other, it's going to be
- 42:51Speaker 4: teams from the best conference in college baseball, and it's
- 42:54Speaker 4: got star power all over the place, and it is
- 42:57Speaker 4: going to be an electric, electric environment, as you well know.
- 43:01Speaker 3: So coach, we can't thank you enough.
- 43:02Speaker 4: I mean, all season long, but certainly in Omaha getting
- 43:05Speaker 4: ready for a national championship run.
- 43:07Speaker 3: Thanks for hopping on.
- 43:08Speaker 7: With us, all right every day?
- 43:10Speaker 3: All right, you as well.
- 43:11Speaker 4: Jay Johnson, lsuhead baseball coach, good enough to join us
- 43:14Speaker 4: here every single Thursday during.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Baseball season, even when his team is in Omaha.
- 43:20Speaker 4: All Right, we will take a break kind of recap
- 43:22Speaker 4: some of what Jay said there to close out our
- 43:24Speaker 4: number two of OTB.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Off the Bench.
- 43:31Speaker 4: Pray, go to Go Tommy's dot com g e a

- 43:50Speaker 4: Over there at Go Tommy's. They just continue, look, continue
- 43:55Speaker 4: to stack it up the trophy case. Eventually they're gonna
- 43:58Speaker 4: have to build a new one, which they could probably
- 44:00Speaker 4: get done because I mean, I tell you all the time,
- 44:02Speaker 4: if you check out like the gallery of work, they've
- 44:04Speaker 4: done something similar. If they haven't, they can go ahead
- 44:06Speaker 4: and do it because they can customize your job. But man,
- 44:09Speaker 4: it is so fun working with Tommy and the team.
- 44:12Speaker 4: I mean, you know what kind of people you're going
- 44:13Speaker 4: to get. I mean, Tommy, member of the Golden Band
- 44:17Speaker 4: from Tiger Land. How could you not fully get behind that?
- 44:20Speaker 4: The quality of work, the quality of people, the quality
- 44:23Speaker 4: of everything over when you work with Tommy's windows, doors
- 44:25Speaker 4: and siding, go Tommy's dot com.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Yeah, two thousand and seven Champs Purple and gold to
- 44:42Speaker 1: the core. This is off the bench with Hester and
- 44:46Speaker 1: Flynn Baton Rougees go to for all things Louisiana sports.
- 44:50Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, purple and goals for sure that I
- 44:54Speaker 4: take ninety nine percent, but like there's some one percent
- 44:57Speaker 4: that's still like powder blue.
- 44:58Speaker 5: You know you got the bolts on the back screen.
- 45:01Speaker 8: No, they mean like purple and gold LSU gold or.
- 45:05Speaker 4: Maybe it's purple and goal. So it's a tie of
- 45:07Speaker 4: purple and goal and then gold and powder blue together. Yeah,
- 45:11Speaker 4: the goal stands for both. I mean, charge gave me
- 45:14Speaker 4: a lot of money, LS. You didn't pay me anything, unfortunately. Hey,
- 45:18Speaker 4: I didn't get like a twenty dollars handshake. You're getting
- 45:21Speaker 4: the nil money either. The nil settlement only goes back
- 45:24Speaker 4: to twenty sixteen, so you.
- 45:27Speaker 5: Know, I know I saw that the other day and
- 45:29Speaker 5: I was like a man.
- 45:30Speaker 4: I like, I don't care because I finished up in
- 45:32Speaker 4: seven a long time ago. If I was twenty fifteen, Oh,
- 45:35Speaker 4: I'd be salty, super salty, but great stuff by Jay Johnson. There. Look,
- 45:44Speaker 4: Elsie's gonna be ready to play. Nobody prepares like that guy.
- 45:48Speaker 4: Uh loved all his answers like I always do. I mean,
- 45:50Speaker 4: I'm telling you he is the closest thing that we
- 45:52Speaker 4: have to Nick Saban in a college baseball coach like
- 45:55Speaker 4: that is Jay Johnson. And that is the highest compliment
- 45:59Speaker 4: that I think I can get anybody. So looking forward
- 46:01Speaker 4: to watching the Tigers play and looking forward to Ryan
- 46:03Speaker 4: McGee sec network.
- 46:04Speaker 3: When we hop back off the bench. All right, go

- 46:16Speaker 4: They've been doing it, speaking of a long time ago,
- 46:19Speaker 4: since my freshman year in college two thousand and four.
- 46:22Speaker 4: And you do not thrive like they have for that
- 46:24Speaker 4: long unless you're doing things you guessed it the right way.
- 46:28Speaker 4: Brandon Barton and the team do everything the right way, man.
- 46:31Speaker 4: And the cool thing about them is they care about
- 46:34Speaker 4: your space, They care about your home, They care about
- 46:37Speaker 4: making your space better. So when they come in, like
- 46:40Speaker 4: you don't even have to really have a plan in
- 46:42Speaker 4: place because they kind of take care of all that.
- 46:44Speaker 3: They look at your home and.
- 46:45Speaker 4: Say, okay, this would benefit you, and they lay it
- 46:48Speaker 4: out for you. They give you that plan, they give
- 46:50Speaker 4: you what they would do four your space. I was
- 46:54Speaker 4: blown away they came in, They did it for me.
- 46:55Speaker 4: I mean, I cannot tell you how much we love
