- 1:05letting us purge and cleanse our souls.
- 1:08Blessed be America and nation reborn.
- 1:11Welcome to What's Your Least Favorite Scary Movie?
- 1:13The podcast where we talk about the good, the bad, the ugly and
- 1:17the absurd and all of our favorite.
- 1:18And least favorite scary movies because we believe every horror
- 1:21movie rightfully has its fan base, even if.
- 1:23We don't always. Get it?
- 1:24My name is Travis. My name is Jesse, and happy 4th,
- 1:29everyone. We decided to go super patriotic
- 1:32and talk about the birds. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:36We're really excited that this fell on a release day.
- 1:41Yeah, I didn't. I didn't even think about that
- 1:44whenever I picked this one, but I just knew that it fits July.
- 1:49Yes. So yeah, we're we're being very
- 1:52patriotic for sure. Yes, I guess we, we have like
- 1:57did a bonus episode back in 2021 for the Forever Purge and we've
- 2:05been wanting to kind of visit the series completely, but, you
- 2:10know, it feels like it needs to fall at a certain time.
- 2:13Yeah. This is one of those ones I feel
- 2:14we we can do it like casually. We don't need to make this one a
- 2:18whole franchise, but. We'll.
- 2:20We'll end up talking about all of them, I'm sure, because we
- 2:23like these movies. Yes, absolutely.
- 2:25They're much like the Saws and the Screams and the Halloweens.
- 2:29They're movies that we just kind of put on casualties.
- 2:31Yeah, yeah, true. OK, announcements.
- 2:36We had R2B or not to be this past weekend.
- 2:38It was on Wolf Cop. Yeah, Wolf Cop.
- 2:41And it was a lot of fun. Yes, it was.
- 2:43So make sure you check that out. And I think that's it for
- 2:47announcements. We had our Patreon episode out
- 2:50to. This.
- 2:51Past week, which was for June, which was horror Jeopardy, Yeah,
- 2:55horror Jeopardy. So that had a lot of fun with
- 2:58that. So if you are a Jeopardy slash
- 3:01trivia fan and you want to check that out, head on over to our
- 3:03Patreon. Yep.
- 3:06Budget tier. Budget tier, yes.
- 3:08All right, I've got her poll. OK, so last week I wanted to ask
- 3:13everybody what your favorite good guy doll catch phrase was.
- 3:16So the options were A which was hi, I'm Chucky and I'm your
- 3:21friend till the end, Heidi Ho BI like to be hugged and C hi, I'm
- 3:28Chucky wanna play so and I chose the intense space where he like
- 3:33turns his head back. Into that Chucky wanna play?
- 3:36Yeah. It gets a little bit more
- 3:37sinister. OK, so on Instagram 14% like I'm
- 3:43your friend till the end, 36% I like to be hugged 50% hi, I'm
- 3:48Chucky want to play. And on Twitter it's 50% I'm your
- 3:53friend till the end and 50% Hi, I'm Chucky want to play.
- 3:56Yeah, my favorite. I think you got to go with that.
- 4:01Hi, I'm Chucky want to play because it's just so iconic and
- 4:04it has probably the biggest impact in the movie when he
- 4:06makes that reveal with that one. I like the friend to the end
- 4:12because. It sets Andy up.
- 4:14It sets Andy up, but also it like it kind of plays on that
- 4:19whole like loyalty children have to their their stuffies.
- 4:23And that's true, especially something that's like such a
- 4:27like, I don't know the right word for it for the not
- 4:34franchise, but like it's such a big thing for kids where they've
- 4:37got all of the different, they've got the show, they've
- 4:41got the different things you can buy, they've got the cereal.
- 4:44Like it's just it. It's ingrained in their life.
- 4:47Property. Yeah.
- 4:48Franchise is the right word, I think.
- 4:50It don't, it doesn't feel, it's not what it's not the word I'm
- 4:54looking for. I I don't know what the word I'm
- 4:56looking for is, but that's not there's a different term I'm
- 5:00trying to think of. But anyway, yeah, I like the
- 5:03friend to the end, OK? So, all right, so that's it for
- 5:07the polls. So I think we're ready to purge.
- 5:10OK. So let's do this.
- 5:12OK, The Purge released May 2nd, 2013 at the Stanley Film
- 5:17Festival with a wide release on June 7th, 2013.
- 5:21We watched it on our fork, but as of the end of June, which
- 5:25when this releases, who knows what the situation's going to
- 5:28be. I don't know.
- 5:30Could be completely different in July, so check your streaming
- 5:32options if you want to watch this thing.
- 5:34Yes, but as of like today you can't stream it anywhere, but
- 5:39you can rent it from YouTube, Google Play Prime or Fandango at
- 5:42home. Written and directed by James
- 5:45Demonaco, music by Nathan Whitehead and special effects
- 5:49prosthetics by Greg McDougall. Starring Ethan Hawke is James
- 5:53Sanden, Lena Hetty as Mary Sanden, Max Buckholder as
- 5:57Charlie Sanden, Adelaide Kane as Zoe Sanden, Tony Aller as Henry,
- 6:03Edwin Hodge as Bloody Stranger and Reese Wakefield as Polite
- 6:07Leader. Polite leader.
- 6:12All right, Travis, it's time for our favorite game budget.
- 6:15Or bug Ted. I know for a fact that this is
- 6:18going to be a bug. Ted.
- 6:19Again, Blumhouse. Yeah, I was going to say the
- 6:22Blumhouse logo. Yeah, but we also in our To Be
- 6:25or Not to Be. I used Purge Anarchy as one of
- 6:28the comparison movies and that one only had a $9 million
- 6:30budget, and there's no way that this one had a bigger budget
- 6:33than that one. Yes, in fact, anarchy was thrice
- 6:37the budget of this. I don't get to use thrice enough
- 6:40in my daily life so thank you. Budget of 3 million.
- 6:45Nice. OK.
- 6:46Opening box office of 34 million and a worldwide gross of
- 6:5089,000,000. Current IMDb score of 5.7 out of
- 6:5410 not. Bad.
- 6:55That's not too bad. I don't want people kind of hate
- 6:58on this one. Yeah, I and I'll talk about my
- 7:01feelings on that in a little bit.
- 7:03Yeah, I've got some myself. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:05OK. I have a theme for three movies
- 7:09in 2013. OK.
- 7:11And the theme is wait, exactly how many movies are in this
- 7:16franchise at this point? Oh, interesting.
- 7:19OK. And I mean at this .20240, OK.
- 7:2224 OK, yeah, OK, cool. Well, let's let's go.
- 7:26The first one and budget to your bubbies.
- 7:29We'll we'll know why this is funny.
- 7:31The first one's The Conjuring. The.
- 7:33Conjuring. Oh man, I love.
- 7:37You know what? That's a great question for that
- 7:40because it has. Are we counting Annabelle and
- 7:44the Nun and part of the franchise?
- 7:46I think we have to. But they're also kind of like
- 7:49offshoots. So it's weird that like
- 7:51Annabelle is kind of like cannibalized that entire thing,
- 7:54like it was The Conjuring universe and now it's like the
- 7:56Annabelle verse or something. Like that I.
- 7:59Interesting, that's a good question.
- 8:01I I couldn't give you an answer. That released July 19th, 2013 on
- 8:06a budget of $20 million and a worldwide gross of 320 million.
- 8:12Holy hell and IMDb score of 7.5 out of 10.
- 8:15That's insane. That movie was awesome though.
- 8:18Yeah, it it was really good. And I think it's it's one of
- 8:21those that's it's like more mainstream horror.
- 8:25Yeah, it. Is but like, I remember when we
- 8:28watched it in theaters, like I walked away.
- 8:29I was like, holy hell, that was amazing.
- 8:30Yeah, that was really good. It was really shocking, really.
- 8:34Shocking. 2nd movie, one neither of us is very familiar with.
- 8:40Insidious, Chapter 2. Man is this also just gonna be
- 8:45like James 1 theme list? No, and you'll understand why in
- 8:51a second. OK.
- 8:52Yeah, OK. That released September 13th,
- 8:552013 on a budget of 5 million and it grossed 161.9 million.
- 9:01Has an IMDb score of 6.5 out of 10.
- 9:05Now I feel like maybe I need to give some of the other Insidious
- 9:08movies a chance, but I did not feel the first one and I don't
- 9:13know. I just, I don't know if I want
- 9:15to dedicate my time to a follow up of a movie I didn't dig.
- 9:18See, I was thinking about it the other day.
- 9:21I I want to revisit the first one because I didn't hate it,
- 9:25but I never really understood the hype for the whole
- 9:28franchise. Yeah, but I kind of want to give
- 9:31it another shot. I do love Rose Byrne.
- 9:33Yeah, oh shit, she is the. She's the mom, yeah.
- 9:36She is, yeah. Damn.
- 9:37Yeah. So.
- 9:38And the ending of that movie is incredible.
- 9:40Yes, it's just like all of the in between kind of tedious.
- 9:44Yeah, OK. And the third?
- 9:46Maybe Texas Chainsaw. Yeah.
- 9:51And this is the one that I for my own personal memory.
- 9:57You. Struggle.
- 9:58I subtitle it. Do your thing 'cause.
- 10:00Do you think? We will eventually cover this
- 10:03franchise on this show and you guys are going to understand
- 10:06that despite the fact that I've seen all of these movies,
- 10:09several of them multiple times, I could not tell you which one
- 10:13is which. This is a franchise that is
- 10:16extremely confusing, even more so than the Halloween franchise
- 10:20because they have split timelines where Leatherface has
- 10:24different names and different timelines.
- 10:26Yes, it's so weird. So like, which one are you doing
- 10:30a sequel prequel to? Like it's really confusing.
- 10:32Yes, it it's I kind of like the James Bond Double O 7 theory
- 10:39where like it passes along to a different person.
- 10:42Yeah, Leather Face is just. Yeah, Leather Face is just a
- 10:45code name. Dude down in Texas, dime a
- 10:48dozen. There's a guy down there
- 10:50somewhere wearing a face, using a chainsaw, eating some people.
- 10:53Which leather face do you want? You want it in this town or this
- 10:56town? Are you trying North Texas?
- 10:58South Texas? East Texas?
- 10:59West TX? Which leather face do you want?
- 11:02All right. Once you pick that out, which
- 11:03variety of Bill Moser do you want?
- 11:05Do you want him as chop top or do you want him as the uncle or
- 11:09the dad or whatever the role that guy is?
- 11:11Like you got a pic? Yeah, yeah.
- 11:14The reason I knew this one is because when I, you know, I
- 11:18found my list of 2013 movies and I pulled it up to get the dad
- 11:22and I saw Alexandria Daddario and I was like, this is the one
- 11:25I like. This is the.
- 11:27This is. The first movie that we watched
- 11:29when I got my apartment down in Richmond and yeah, we watched
- 11:33it. I didn't even have any
- 11:34furniture. We just set up the laptop and we
- 11:36watched some Texas. Yeah, we set up the laptop, we
- 11:38heated up a frozen pizza in the oven, and we laid on some
- 11:42pillows and comforted around the floor.
- 11:44Hey, you know what? We did our thing.
- 11:45'Cause we did our thing, 'cause So that really is January 4th,
- 11:512013. It had a budget of I wrote Oh no
- 11:56I just scrolled myself out. 20 million and a worldwide gross of
- 11:5947 million. Wow.
- 12:01And IMDb score 4.8 out of 10. I don't care, I love this movie.
- 12:08It's. Fun.
- 12:09It's one that like when Travis is like do you want to watch a
- 12:12Texas chainsaw? I'm either going to say 1-2 or
- 12:15do your thing because. It's not my favorite, but I'll
- 12:19I'll watch it. It's fine.
- 12:21It's it's a fun enough one. You watch it to make me happy.
- 12:24I like it too, it has its moments.
- 12:27OK I have multiple taglines so the first one one night a year.
- 12:34All crime is legal. Survive the night.
- 12:38Those are both on the poster. I don't know if they were
- 12:39together or separate. I put them together.
- 12:41It sounds about right. Yeah.
- 12:43OK, it's OK. Reminder all emergency services
- 12:47will be suspended for a 12 hour period during the purge.
- 12:51I kind of like that these are just like, probably what you
- 12:54would get from, like, a pamphlet.
- 12:56Yeah. Like, you know, it's just like,
- 12:58hey, by the way, just so you know.
- 13:00Well, that's about to change. If on one night every year you
- 13:03could commit any crime without facing consequences, what would
- 13:06you do? It's asking us a question.
- 13:09That would be like, would you like fundamentalist for the new
- 13:13founding Father, which that's like a fundamentalist group
- 13:17anyway. I kind of feel like, yeah,
- 13:19that's like the pamphlets they would give out, like how we have
- 13:22the fundies that come around and be like, you're going to hell,
- 13:24like those little comic books that they like to pass out.
- 13:27Yeah, yeah. And then finally, we have you
- 13:32find folk. You find fault.
- 13:35You find. Just a quote from the leader.
- 13:39I almost called him the gentle perjury.
- 13:42Gentle perjury. He is kind of gentle with his
- 13:44approach to everything. He he is who I picture in my
- 13:49head when I read the Myron Bolatar books.
- 13:51He's his best friend is like a yuppie who's described as like
- 13:54being blonde and have very like Waspy features.
- 13:57Windsor Lockhorn. The third I picked Reese
- 14:00Wakefield. Yes, exactly.
- 14:03That is why I picture in my head he.
- 14:04Is 1/3 of some. Generation.
- 14:09OK, I've got a few fun facts. OK.
- 14:12Yeah. So this was actually expired,
- 14:15Expired. This is actually inspired the
- 14:17script was by a kind of like off hand reactionary comment from
- 14:23Demonica's wife because they were driving a drunk driver
- 14:26almost hit them. And you know, that big road rage
- 14:31scare incident. She kind of was just like, I
- 14:34wish everybody got a free one per year.
- 14:36Talking about like a free murder per year.
- 14:38Yeah, So it inspired the script. He works on it.
- 14:42He is working with Le Mercier, who is one of the producers of
- 14:46this movie, and they're trying to sell the script.
- 14:49But so many studios were saying that it is too UN American
- 14:52because of its commentary on violence and gun control.
- 14:56I. Wouldn't say it's UN American, I
- 14:57think it's very American, just anti American.
- 15:00Yeah, it's like the kind of American where it's like, hey,
- 15:04maybe we should recognize the parts of our country that aren't
- 15:07perfect. And you're like, no America's.
- 15:09Perfect. What?
- 15:10That is what America is about. We're supposed to be able to
- 15:12criticize. Yeah, so of course, enter Jason
- 15:16Blum. If he he is tasked with making
- 15:20this movie happen with $3,000,000.
- 15:22And if you're wondering how do you get Ethan Hawke for a budget
- 15:25of $3,000,000 when you also have all of these sets you have to do
- 15:30and all of this violence and special effects?
- 15:33Well what you do is you have Ethan Hawke sleep on Jason
- 15:37Blum's couch during the duration of filming and accept $10,000
- 15:43and end up making $2,000,000 on back end compensation once the
- 15:46movie is successful. That's smart right there.
- 15:49But I wonder like, didn't they have like a pre-existing
- 15:52relationship or something like that?
- 15:54I think so. I think that like, I think he
- 15:56did this as a favor. And I think that Ethan Hawke
- 15:59also knows that this is a character he kind of tends to
- 16:02get typecast in, especially with Blumhouse films, because think
- 16:06about his character in Sinister. Yeah, he's also like a
- 16:13self-serving dad who puts his family at danger to move his own
- 16:17career forward. It's funny that I imagine he may
- 16:20have went up to Jason Blum was like, hey man, can I not play
- 16:23this character? He's like, okay, I've got like a
- 16:26kid diddler. Like, do you wanna do that?
- 16:29It's like. Damn it.
- 16:33Monkey paw curls. Yeah, just one.
- 16:37Yeah. So another thing they did to
- 16:41save money, a lot of people were like, why would you have this
- 16:44concept where society is going wild but you keep it in the
- 16:47house? I was one of those people.
- 16:49I've read theories that it was kind of like a Trojan horse,
- 16:52Introduce people to the concept. If they like it, then we can
- 16:55explore more with a bigger budget.
- 16:56And that's kind of what they had to do because the budget wasn't
- 17:00enough for them to do all of those different set pieces.
- 17:02This was shot in LA, which you if you were going to shoot
- 17:06outdoors and not on a set, you'd have to close down streets, get
- 17:09permits, all those things like that.
- 17:11So they set most of this in the House for budgetary purposes.
- 17:15That makes sense. Yeah.
- 17:17I think I had always remembered them talking about that.
- 17:20This is kind of the test of the waters.
- 17:22Yes. And then they'll open it up
- 17:24after the. Fact.
- 17:24And that was a big thing with Orange is the New Black, too,
- 17:28because it's based off of a memoir by a woman who actually
- 17:31like went to prison. So the first season is Piper
- 17:34Chapman. She's our Trojan horse.
- 17:35She's what's gets us into that world.
- 17:37And then the rest of it is an exploration of like our justice
- 17:41system and all of the different stories of the different
- 17:44characters contained within. And by the end, people are like,
- 17:47I'm kind of, I don't need to see Piper on my screen anymore.
- 17:50Let's see some of these other characters.
- 17:52It's kind. Of cool and a show can do.
- 17:54That. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 17:55And it, I mean, it went on for like seven or eight seasons, I
- 17:58think so. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:00And finally, they did some test audience, as they do, to make
- 18:05sure that it's going to be successful, see if anything
- 18:08needs to be tweaked. And James Demonico found it very
- 18:11disturbing that there were some test audience members who
- 18:14approve of the idea of a purge. And he was like, it's also kind
- 18:18of antithetical to what the movie is trying to say.
- 18:21Yeah. But then you're going to like,
- 18:23it's going to reach those people.
- 18:24Yeah, that are like, oh. Hell yeah, I don't want to kill
- 18:27people like. Yeah.
- 18:29And somebody's going to like, really like, fantasize this type
- 18:31of shit. Jesse I would just be one of
- 18:34those people that would be like, cool.
- 18:36Jesse gets designer clothes without repercussions.
- 18:40Jesse breaks into a high end store.
- 18:43Yeah, that's the stuff that I would do.
- 18:45I would try and like, all right, like I can just like really
- 18:47fucking like go and get the shit that I want.
- 18:50I don't have to pay for anything.
- 18:51I just. Travis gets his new PlayStation.
- 18:57Give me a like, I'll like go and like tie a whole fucking pool to
- 19:00my car and just drag it through the streets like Fast and
- 19:02Furious style with a bank vault. Dude like a hold contractors at
- 19:08gunpoint digging in ground pool like we've got to get this done
- 19:12now we have 12 hours to complete the project.
- 19:16I also think it's funny that he's like worried about that and
- 19:18then like his wife and like he, she kind of came up with the
- 19:22idea in the 1st place. Like maybe she like secretly
- 19:25deep. Now she's like, I'll fuck him
- 19:26off. That too, actually.
- 19:27No, I think it's kind of like one of those things where it's
- 19:30like, you know, everybody jokes that you should be allowed to
- 19:32slack one person. No, I get it, I get it.
- 19:34I I don't think she actually wants to murder.
- 19:36Somebody, but like, especially in a moment like that where
- 19:40you're almost hit by a drunk driver, like, what are you
- 19:43doing, man? I get it.
- 19:44Yeah, I get it. OK, so I guess that brings us to
- 19:48our good, bad, ugly and absurd. Yes, it does.
- 19:52All right, I will kick it off. This is one of those movies that
- 19:56has a really strong premise. I love the idea that you don't
- 20:01have to worry about your repercussions.
- 20:02And like the whole idea that like somebody can come to your
- 20:05house and just straight up murder you.
- 20:06And like, it's fucking chaos everywhere.
- 20:09And like the premise alone just gives the movie tension
- 20:13throughout. And that's how it is for me for
- 20:15all of the movies. Because like, I know like no
- 20:18matter where you go, no matter what you do, there's always
- 20:20going to be danger. So that right there is really
- 20:23interesting. It makes the movie kind of it,
- 20:26it kind of keeps you there no matter what the entire time.
- 20:29I like that this turns into a entertaining home invasion movie
- 20:34like halfway through. See, I remember whenever we
- 20:38watched this in theaters, a lot of people were kind of bummed
- 20:42because they wanted to see everything going on out there.
- 20:46But I remember watching everything leading up to the
- 20:48release and I wanted a nice home invasion movie.
- 20:51So that's what I got and I, you know, I had a good time with it,
- 20:55But I understand other people's frustrations with that because
- 20:58like the whole idea, like once we do open it up and go explore
- 21:02the city and stuff and the sequel is like, I get it.
- 21:04There's no going back. You want that going forward.
- 21:07And the other things that I like about this movie, and this is
- 21:10something that happens with the series as it, it keeps going,
- 21:14but it gets its message across without beating you over the
- 21:18fucking head with it. And it's not super preachy,
- 21:22which the later movies, it can't help itself.
- 21:25It just like beats you over the head with like the message.
- 21:28They try and slap your face with it and shit like that.
- 21:31It's just like, we get it. Like, understand entirely what
- 21:35this is about. Now let us like actually watch
- 21:37the movie unfold for once. But yeah, so those are my
- 21:42positives for this. So I was one of those people
- 21:45that was a little bit bummed that we had this amazing premise
- 21:49and it takes place in a single location, as much as I love a
- 21:54single location. I know that's your jam.
- 21:56I know, but I think now that we have the franchise that we
- 22:03currently have, I really appreciate this movie for what
- 22:08it does because it takes this extreme premise and it puts us
- 22:12in what is supposed to be a quote UN quote secure place with
- 22:16it. It puts us in like a safe
- 22:20environment to explore this premise and then we realize it's
- 22:23not all that safe. And we do get that messaging of
- 22:26like, the Purge really is meant to basically cool the poor
- 22:31population, the homeless population.
- 22:34And it doesn't happen in neighborhoods like ours.
- 22:38Like I'm going to say that's not very subtle.
- 22:41No, personally. But that's a testament to how it
- 22:45gets in the later interest of this movie.
- 22:47Like that right there is subtle for this.
- 22:50Series, but I I do appreciate that we have like the single
- 22:54family perspective and like you said, once you open those
- 22:57floodgates, you you can't go back.
- 23:00Like nobody's going to want to see the chaos in an entire city
- 23:04and then go back to a single house.
- 23:07Yes. And I do remember one thing that
- 23:09I appreciated about this movie, even from the jump, was like the
- 23:13absolute terror I have as a quote, UN quote, have not the
- 23:20fact that we would be so fucking vulnerable during this.
- 23:24Yeah, we wouldn't have that security system.
- 23:27And then also to know that, say you did scrimp and save and get
- 23:31a security system knowing that it's all bullshit.
- 23:33Yeah, right. And I get what he's saying that
- 23:35like a lot of times it just looking intimidating is enough.
- 23:39And you do see that a lot of crimes, home invasions are
- 23:43crimes of opportunity. You know, if you've got a
- 23:46security system, even if it's not working, a lot of times
- 23:48criminals will be like, I'm not going to risk it.
- 23:50The same with like just having a sticker on your window or like
- 23:52in your property, like hey, like it just kind of gives the
- 23:55impression you might not be safe to enter this home.
- 23:58Yeah, or like a lot of times you can pump a shotgun without ever
- 24:01having to shoot it because that sounds enough to scare somebody.
- 24:03That is a scary sound. Yeah, so like I get the premise
- 24:07behind it, but it's also it's so gummy to sell people what I'm
- 24:12assuming are like up in the five or six figure range of security
- 24:18systems. And then like when push comes to
- 24:23shove, like, oh, this wasn't built for worst case scenario.
- 24:25What? Motherfucker, that's the whole
- 24:27point, yes. And like Ethan Hawke really does
- 24:30like he's almost kind of like Gordon Gecko esque.
- 24:34Like he's like greed is in baby. Like he's he's like, remember
- 24:38when we couldn't afford rent? But now we're going to get a
- 24:40boat, but we're not going to get a boat with a car garage on it,
- 24:43because that's just like, absurd.
- 24:45It was just like, Oh my God, it has like a garage.
- 24:48Are we doing this? Are we going to do this one?
- 24:50We're going to do, Oh my God, we're going to do this, Charlie.
- 24:57Charlie needs a place to park. Tim, I was going to say, Timmy's
- 24:59got a place to go. So yeah, I think that this
- 25:04movie, it explores a lot of stuff.
- 25:06And also like that whole, like even the rich want to be richer.
- 25:10So like in this nice fucking neighborhood.
- 25:12And they all willingly bought those security systems.
- 25:15Yeah, I know. They're so and they're.
- 25:18Yeah. And they're like.
- 25:18What do you expect then? Yeah, I do think the the size of
- 25:22their house is absurd for four people.
- 25:25And once again I need to bring up the point that people that
- 25:29rich should have a fucking panic room 0.
- 25:32You're right, they don't. Especially if you know your
- 25:35security system is garbage. Yeah, that's true.
- 25:38But not it's not supposed to happen in their neighborhood.
- 25:42They're not supposed to panic. OK, but yeah, I I think it's I
- 25:47think it's really solid maybe. OK, cool.
- 25:49What's your bad? So I think one of the things
- 25:53that kind of kills the momentum for me in this movie is there's
- 25:56just a lot of wandering around in the darkness.
- 25:59And that probably takes up like, I'd say maybe 1/3 of.
- 26:03This. Movie and it just kind of takes
- 26:06things and just like slows it down to a fucking halt and it
- 26:11kills the momentum like we get some interesting things and then
- 26:14it's like OK, now we're going to go like look for people and then
- 26:17like their house is too fucking big and it's like super dark
- 26:19because they cut the power and it's just OK, this is what we're
- 26:23doing. We're just going to walk around
- 26:24the house like we're actually showing all this shit.
- 26:27Nothing interesting happening. It doesn't become interesting
- 26:30until the people finally break in and then you have a house
- 26:34full of all of these people just like roaming around trying to
- 26:37kill you and stuff like that and then like that's when it opens
- 26:40up with that. But like all the things building
- 26:42up to it, it just kind of kills everything.
- 26:45And another thing I had is like I don't really think that the
- 26:50characters were super interesting like nobody really
- 26:52stood out to me like none of the family members are that great.
- 26:57Maybe like the main, the gentle perjurer is he's probably the
- 27:01most engaging character. He's super fucking charismatic.
- 27:04He is. And he's like, really creepy.
- 27:06He's got that like, weird smile, but like, that's about it.
- 27:10Like, you know, like, I don't really think any of the family
- 27:13members really stand out too much.
- 27:16So yeah, that's pretty much my bad.
- 27:18Yeah, no, I I tend to agree with you.
- 27:21My bad is that it's a lot of like footage of people creeping
- 27:24down the halls and it could be spent building up a little bit
- 27:30more of that characterization. Like we see near the end.
- 27:32Like Mary doesn't actually really seem to support the Purge
- 27:36or her husband's new line of work or anything.
- 27:38Like I wish like maybe we could have gotten some of that a
- 27:42little bit earlier on in the movie other than her just like
- 27:45having a tight lipped smile, like, you know what I mean?
- 27:48Like I wish we had more of that. I wish I knew how fucking old
- 27:51Zoe was because to me she looks like maybe she's 17 and I'm
- 27:55like, if she's 17, what's the problem of Hank's 18?
- 27:57You know what I mean? Like.
- 27:59Yeah, it's I that's, that's a good question.
- 28:01So like, how if she's 15, yes, I understand the dad's hesitance.
- 28:05Yeah. So like we at that age, like you
- 28:08need that specification of how old one of them is.
- 28:12That's a big plot point here. Yeah, yeah, I, I agree.
- 28:16And I, I, you know, we say this all the time on the show.
- 28:19Take the time you need to tell the story you want to tell.
- 28:22And I don't think the story you want to tell is dark shots of a
- 28:25large hallway. Yeah, it's just not really
- 28:29interesting to watch the whole time.
- 28:31Like and it doesn't hold the tension.
- 28:33No, it doesn't, Because, you know, nobody's there.
- 28:36And you know, I, I don't think watching this movie, you never
- 28:40really get the impression that the guy that comes inside the
- 28:42house is like a real threat. Like, he just know that he's
- 28:45just trying to hide. So like when they're wandering
- 28:48the hall was, I'm not worried that he's going to, like,
- 28:50stumble upon this guy and oh, shit, there's going to be a
- 28:52death. Like, it's just like, oh, we're
- 28:54just trying to find the family and oh, no, it's always running
- 28:56away again. It's like our cats, Yeah.
- 28:59Like. I'm trying to like get them or
- 29:01like, hey, we're like, can I brush your teeth?
- 29:03Like, Oh no. And they like run through the
- 29:04house. Like it's just us walking
- 29:05through the house trying to find.
- 29:06Honestly, though, I think Zoe was so confused while we were
- 29:10watching this movie because the amount of times would be like,
- 29:11where's Zoe? Zoe come back like and she like
- 29:14kept walking into the living room being like, I'm here like I
- 29:17don't what do you guys? And at one point like she came
- 29:19and sat on my lap. She's like, I'm here.
- 29:20And they kept saying Zoe and she's like, what do you want?
- 29:26What's your ugly? My ugly was the whole thing with
- 29:29James selling the shitty security system to people
- 29:32knowing that it doesn't work. Like I get it, I get it.
- 29:36Like yeah, the like idea of even having in the 1st place as a
- 29:40deterrent, but like he's it's built up and they advertise it
- 29:45as like state-of-the-art. Like you will not have to worry
- 29:47about anything with this shit right here and it just sucks.
- 29:50And like when the family, like when he they're asking if it's
- 29:54possible for them to get in, he lists like four or five ways
- 29:57that they can get in without thinking about.
- 29:59It I like that his first idea was they can Burrow underground.
- 30:03Like are they going to get a fucking drill and just like go
- 30:06underneath the in? The end It's nothing so
- 30:09complicated. Their provisions are a pickup
- 30:11truck and some chains. They don't even like, I don't
- 30:14even know if they bust out the windows is all they do.
- 30:17They bust out the windows. Yeah, they pull the bars off the
- 30:19windows and then bust in and then.
- 30:21They go in and lock the door. That's all it took.
- 30:24Yeah. Yeah, it's insane.
- 30:26My ugly is the way they treat the the stranger, the bloody
- 30:31man, which is. This ends up becoming the heart
- 30:35of the series that like people being lesser than because
- 30:39they're poor or unhoused or, you know, anything like.
- 30:43That by by they. Who are you talking about?
- 30:46The Perjures. OK, Yeah.
- 30:48It's just upsetting and it's upsetting the way they keep
- 30:54referring to him as the filthy homeless swine.
- 30:57And wow, spoiler for when I do the reviews later.
- 31:01But when I was trying, 'cause I know that you and I both really
- 31:03like this movie. So I was trying to find a more
- 31:05like negative take on it, see why people didn't like it.
- 31:08I had to scroll through a lot of comments that were derogatory
- 31:13about that man. And I'm like, I feel like you
- 31:15missed the point of the movie. Not in that you just didn't like
- 31:18the way they chose to convey the message, but you disagree with
- 31:21the message. What?
- 31:23Were they saying Oh well this whole movie wouldn't have
- 31:25happened if it wasn't for that stupid little boy and that a
- 31:28dumb homeless man or like. Jesus.
- 31:31Yeah, like, and they just keep calling him.
- 31:33Like there were several reviews that referred to him as the
- 31:36homeless pig. And I'm like.
- 31:37Homeless pig what? The fuck?
- 31:39Like, I get that that's the language used in the movie, but
- 31:41you're not supposed to identify with those guys like they're the
- 31:45bad guys. So yeah, the fact that that's
- 31:51happening and the fact that in real life people aren't getting
- 31:54that that's a bad thing. It's a very ugly reflection of
- 31:57some parts of our society. James Samanco's like, what have
- 32:00I done? He's like, Oh dear God.
- 32:03I wonder if he breathed a sigh of relief when we got past March
- 32:0622nd, 2022 and he was like Oh my God.
- 32:09He didn't actually do it. Especially considering who our
- 32:13previous administration was. Yeah, for sure.
- 32:16He's like, I didn't write this movie thinking that someday we
- 32:19would ever have that for a president.
- 32:21Yeah. OK, absurd.
- 32:25OK, so for absurd, I my first thing is gentle perjure his.
- 32:32It's funny that he approaches the house wearing a mask and
- 32:34then he takes the mask off and it's like the same face.
- 32:37I know. It looks exactly the same and
- 32:40it's just so weird man because they are all wearing that.
- 32:43Like did they model it after his face or something?
- 32:46I remember you and I went to like a hobby shop at one point
- 32:51shortly after this movie came out and we found masks like
- 32:53that. And they were actually, they
- 32:54were just clear masks with like exaggerated like.
- 32:58Make up over top, yeah. I don't know if that's what
- 33:00these are though. I think they were kind of like
- 33:03that. I think they were kind of meant
- 33:04to be like a little uncanny valley.
- 33:06Yeah, I think it's a little bit like.
- 33:08That, yeah. And the other thing is the like
- 33:12cool Timmy, he is the fucking doll from Toy Story.
- 33:17Yes, the whole time I keep thinking Charlie is Sid if he
- 33:21was rich. Yeah, exactly.
- 33:23Like, like he was talking like 1010 years ago, we were barely
- 33:27able to afford rent. Now we're just looking for a
- 33:29boat. Maybe that was them ten years
- 33:31ago. That's the boy.
- 33:32It's like it's got sentimental value to him, so he's kept it
- 33:36and he turned it into a fucking tank.
- 33:38So that's it, That's my absurd stuff.
- 33:40What about you? My absurd is that Timmy is such
- 33:42a huge fucking plot point yet there are multiple stories in
- 33:45this house. How is he capturing all of the
- 33:47action staying on one floor? I didn't even think about that.
- 33:51Yeah, I want, I want the deleted scene where Timmy just like
- 33:54tumbles down those spiral stairs.
- 33:56That'd be hilarious. I would love that.
- 34:01OK. We ready to rate it.
- 34:04I think we are. OK.
- 34:06I think I'd given this like A7. Yeah, it's pretty fun.
- 34:10I like it. I think 7, two.
- 34:12And I'm going to admit that part of this is like me thinking
- 34:15about what the sequels are. And me too.
- 34:17Yeah. More and well, also like
- 34:19watching it and I'm like, damn, there's a lot of nothing
- 34:22happening. Like I like a lot of things that
- 34:24happen. Like when they do happen, it
- 34:25becomes a really interesting movie, but it gets weighed down
- 34:28so much by just all of this nothing.
- 34:31It's never good when I looked down at my notes and realized I
- 34:33haven't written anything in like 5 minutes.
- 34:35Yeah, it's insane. Yeah.
- 34:37And I didn't miss anything, yeah.
- 34:38Exactly. Yeah.
- 34:39So we. Started having average of
- 34:40Shivan. Shivan All right, all right.
- 34:42So ready to go. We are ready to go.
- 34:45OK, we start off with a little little, not title card, but a
- 34:51little informational screen that says America 2022.
- 34:55Unemployment is at 1%. Crime is at an all time low.
- 34:59Violence barely exists with one exception.
- 35:02This This sounds like the promise that Charlie and Dennis
- 35:06were making when they were right.
- 35:08They'll be lower, son. 2022 unemployment at 1%.
- 35:12Son crime all the time. Low violence barely exists.
- 35:16So then we have some footage of St. violence, just like all
- 35:21across the country. Yeah, it's you can see the time
- 35:24code. It's like all of the years like
- 35:25so previous years purges like happening and it's like
- 35:29different places. I like how they went for like,
- 35:32not like, oh, this is LA, this is New York.
- 35:34They went with like tiny towns in like rural areas.
- 35:38Like we get Tennessee, Rhode Island, you know, shit like
- 35:41that. It was kind of cool to see.
- 35:42I wonder if this is like if they use real footage or if they
- 35:47actually like recorded this stuff for the movie.
- 35:50I would expect you to know since you're like watching those types
- 35:54of videos. Well, they all look like things
- 35:56that I've seen before. They all look real, so I don't
- 35:58know. And I know that like movies like
- 36:01Dawn of the Dead have used real shit like that before too, so it
- 36:05could be. So then we cut to Mr. Sanden
- 36:08James. He is making a big sale.
- 36:10And when he finishes up, he calls a member of his team, I
- 36:13don't know if it's his assistant or what.
- 36:15And she's like, congratulations, Mr. Sanden.
- 36:17He goes, no, this is a team victory.
- 36:19Very condescendingly. I would hate working for this
- 36:22because, you know, he says stuff like that.
- 36:25But then his employee appreciation is like to Papa
- 36:27John's pizzas. I work with a bunch of salesman,
- 36:30it's the same shit and they all have that fucking oh we did this
- 36:33together, did we? So and you know that they're not
- 36:40all getting compensated this. Exactly.
- 36:42Yeah, it's it's bullshit. Fuck off.
- 36:45The radio is playing and it's discussing, you know, asking
- 36:48everybody what's your purge plan?
- 36:51And then reminding everybody to display their blue Batista.
- 36:55Yes, I almost said Batista. That's what I was thinking too.
- 36:58Put your like little tiny blue Batista figurines out front.
- 37:01That way you know. I would feel very safe if I have
- 37:04Batista with me during the purge.
- 37:06If we were doing the Purge and they said that, I would like
- 37:08actually buy like a little like Batista wrestling figure and
- 37:11just like paint it blue and just put it out front.
- 37:14Well, now I have a new craft idea.
- 37:16We can do that. We should start doing that in
- 37:18July. Like we'll put our little
- 37:20Batistas out front. Yeah.
- 37:22OK, well, this one was actually in March though.
- 37:26I noticed that that was kind of weird, I thought.
- 37:28But I think that kind of shifted eventually.
- 37:32So, yeah, as he's driving along, he stops one of his neighbors
- 37:35who's just trying to have a nice walk in fresh air before the
- 37:39terror of the next 12 hours. It was you do that security
- 37:42check like I told you to. I've got the same system, only
- 37:46the best. And like, you can see that this
- 37:48guy wants to fucking punch him. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:51He's like, yeah, get the fuck out of here, James.
- 37:53He's just like, I'm just trying to walk my dog right now.
- 37:55Yeah, man, Can you imagine being a dog during the purge?
- 38:00Not allowed to go outside I. Didn't even think.
- 38:03About it, hearing all of the sounds.
- 38:04What do you do You have to like, yeah, bring in turf.
- 38:07Yeah, I was gonna say, you get like a little square of
- 38:09Astroturf. That's what you gotta do.
- 38:11I don't even know if that would work for.
- 38:13Yeah, I feel like Talia would be like, what the fuck are you
- 38:16doing with? This what is this shit?
- 38:17She's. Like, I have real grass right
- 38:21there. So it's 62 minutes until the
- 38:25annual period commences. Mary is cooking in the kitchen.
- 38:29I'm surprised she cooks herself. I'm surprised they don't have
- 38:33like. They seem like that type of
- 38:34like, I feel like that would have really painted the picture
- 38:37if they like actually had somebody there.
- 38:39But I also wonder if maybe he's like offered and this would be
- 38:43like a nice way to kind of drop that in there.
- 38:46He'd be like, are you like, you know, I love your cooking, but
- 38:50you know, why don't we take this off your plate?
- 38:52We can definitely afford some assistance.
- 38:54And then her be like, Oh well, no, I like being able to do this
- 38:57type of thing myself. Like I think that that would
- 38:59have been a good use of some of the screen time.
- 39:01That's true. That would have been yeah.
- 39:03Instead he shows up and she's like, oh, it's always sulking
- 39:07again. She's upset about Henry and he
- 39:09goes, well, he's 18 and he's not getting any younger.
- 39:12OK, He's like, but I have good news for dinner.
- 39:15Yeah, she's like, well, you might want to go check on her,
- 39:17so. Oh, Zoe and Henry are making out
- 39:21and Hank is gross. He doesn't want to say I love
- 39:24you. He's like, let's growl at each
- 39:25other. This kind of cringy bullshit.
- 39:28You just called him Hank. This is a nickname for Henry.
- 39:30I don't know. Yeah, I feel like, yeah, I feel
- 39:33like he's a scummy Hank. I did.
- 39:35This is really cringy. He's like, oh man, it's who
- 39:38played out. Everybody says I love you.
- 39:40Let's growl at each. Other this is so I know you
- 39:44don't watch the show you that I feel like some of our listeners
- 39:47do and this gives me very love vibes in season 2 where she's
- 39:52like, I don't want to say love because that's my name and it's
- 39:54weird, let's say. I wolf you.
- 39:57I. Wolf you.
- 39:58Yes. Oh, God, yes.
- 39:59It's as bad. And the scene goes entirely too
- 40:01long, much like this scene. Yeah, like, oh, God, can we
- 40:04please not. I hate this.
- 40:06Yeah, it it makes this stuff right here makes me cringe.
- 40:08But you know what, I think it's very true.
- 40:10Is there? That's exactly what you can just
- 40:12say like this right here. Probably like really wet 18 year
- 40:16old and 15 year old would maybe do that.
- 40:19We don't really know her age. Yeah, we don't know her age, but
- 40:22yeah, the whole thing is just very cringe.
- 40:25Blunder years cruise type stuff. Yeah, exactly.
- 40:29So. She hears her dad and she's like
- 40:31you need to leave so he sneaks out from her fucking balcony.
- 40:35She has a God damn balcony. This room looks like the Tyra
- 40:39suite in cycle 21 of the NTM. I don't know what that looks
- 40:44like, but if it looks like this, it's glamorous as hell.
- 40:47Yeah, and as he's climbing out, they see one of the neighbors
- 40:50just casually sharpening a machete in the yard.
- 40:53I get it, You want to be like armed just in case.
- 40:56It doesn't necessarily mean he's going out to go hunt, but he's
- 40:59getting his machete. Right.
- 41:00Yeah, maybe he doesn't believe the hype of the security
- 41:03systems. Or maybe he didn't die the
- 41:05upgraded system. Yeah, I got my security system.
- 41:08Right here. So Grace, one of their neighbors
- 41:13sees Mary outside and brings her some cookies, compliments the
- 41:17new addition on the House. And she's like, you know, some
- 41:19people in the neighborhood say, we paid for that addition.
- 41:22And Mary's like, wait, what? She goes like, you're too
- 41:24sensitive. No, Grace, you're being a secret
- 41:28bitch and you know it. Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 41:30Because like, that does make you feel uneasy, but like, it's kind
- 41:33of true, like. Like it's not inaccurate, but
- 41:37also like you're saying the quiet part out loud and trying
- 41:40to act like you're not trying to imply.
- 41:43Something. Yeah, like, come on.
- 41:45Like, we all know what you mean. You're correct.
- 41:47Like either be friends or don't. But this fake nice bullshit,
- 41:50like, no, we don't need this. And Mary asked if she's having
- 41:53her annual party. She goes, no, we're just going
- 41:56to. We're just going to hang out
- 41:57this time, watch the news, try and relax as best we can.
- 42:00Yeah. So inside Charlie has his remote
- 42:05Timmy and he's like hiding in a secret space inside his closet.
- 42:09This house is so big the rooms have extra rooms between.
- 42:13We'll try all these guys. Tiny door, yeah.
- 42:17Yeah, we'll get you a tiny door someday, Travis.
- 42:20Wow, that's my dream. That's your dream?
- 42:24Yeah. So he's got, like a little Toy
- 42:25Story robot. You know, the little baby doll
- 42:28with like the spider legs, except this time it's a tank.
- 42:30So the mom sees it and she's like, Oh my God, I fucking hate
- 42:34that thing. She's like come down, help me
- 42:36set up for dinner. I love this tiny little bit of
- 42:40set decoration. It's such a nice touch.
- 42:42But there are like 4 bottles of ketchup in the fridge and that
- 42:46feels so true for people that like ketchup.
- 42:49Like their family will be like, do we have enough ketchup?
- 42:50Let's just buy some more ketchup.
- 42:51No, this is one of the things I actually paid attention to.
- 42:54I was like, all right, the Heinz bottle, the Heinz ketchup, we're
- 42:58seeing it. It's front and center.
- 42:59All of the other ones are turned backwards.
- 43:01So I'm like, oh, they definitely paid for that right there.
- 43:04They wanted to have that advertised.
- 43:06So I glowed that shit with ketchup, please.
- 43:08I do still believe it because very few, like we're not really
- 43:12ketchup eaters in our house. Yeah, I think you would, but you
- 43:16just don't bother to buy it for just just.
- 43:17For me now it doesn't make any. Sense I don't like ketchup, but
- 43:22I've been in houses where there are ketchup eaters and there's
- 43:25never just one bottle of ketchup.
- 43:28Never. It's.
- 43:28Because whenever it starts to do like the little when you're like
- 43:33and it's like starts shooting like weird juices, like no, not
- 43:36going to use this one anymore. Always one person in the family.
- 43:39It's like the bottles not empty. We're not throwing it out till
- 43:42it's empty all. Right, just fart it.
- 43:44Fart it out. Okay, so yeah, Tim or Charlie
- 43:51comes down there and he's like, look mom, I like did all these
- 43:53upgrades on Timmy. He now has like night vision.
- 43:57And he plays that creepy song from Evil Dead.
- 44:01And he, he's silent now. So these are all things that are
- 44:04going to be really important to the part of the movie.
- 44:06Mom, it's OK. They have dinner, not one carb.
- 44:11Can you believe it? I don't.
- 44:13I don't, I don't believe that one bit.
- 44:15You. Can't have zero carbs.
- 44:16You can't. That's like, impossible.
- 44:18Yeah, I wanted to see what they were eating.
- 44:20They only show them like pulling their forks up.
- 44:22We don't see what's on. Their See, that was one of the
- 44:24things a long time ago. I went for the no carb diet.
- 44:26Like you just kind of have to go for the minimum.
- 44:28Yeah, you can't. You can't escape.
- 44:30Low carb, not no carb. Exactly.
- 44:34So he's like James is asking how everybody's day went.
- 44:37Nobody really wants to do it but like I think they all can tell
- 44:40it's for him to. Like he wants to ask him so he
- 44:42could share his. Big news.
- 44:44Yeah. I like to imagine that he
- 44:45doesn't ask unless he's got something.
- 44:47Yeah, like, what do you want to say, Dad?
- 44:50Charlie's like, hold on, I need to get my vitals, really just to
- 44:54show us that he's got like this smart watch, which fucking
- 44:57everybody's got one of the Were they as big in 20?
- 45:0113, No, I don't think so. Yeah, I think it was like brand
- 45:03new technology back. Then yeah, I guess if this was
- 45:05made now like, nobody would think twice about like.
- 45:08Yeah, 2013, we were still rocking like that early dawn of
- 45:12smartphones. So yeah, smartwatches, I don't
- 45:16think we're quite there yet. OK, but yeah, Charlie, it has to
- 45:21jot down his vitals in his little pocketbook.
- 45:24Zoe doesn't want to talk, but when she sees her parents are
- 45:28doing their stern face and she's like, fine, I had a geometry
- 45:30test. Yeah.
- 45:34And then James is like, all right, time for my big news.
- 45:37My division is the best. It really is a team effort.
- 45:42He condescends even to his family.
- 45:43I know I couldn't have done it without you.
- 45:46Yeah, it's especially you, Charlie.
- 45:48And Charlie's like, I wrote a story about a man who kills with
- 45:51his love, so he cuts out his heart.
- 45:54And so he says, shouldn't he cut off his penis?
- 45:56And this is like the most normal family moment where the parents
- 45:59are like, we're not like, I think Mary wanted to laugh out
- 46:03of it. She's like, it's not appropriate
- 46:04for me to laugh at that. And she's like, Zoe, could you
- 46:06not? And then Zoe and Charlie, they
- 46:08fist off and have a sibling. Moment.
- 46:10I can't remember what James says, but he says something
- 46:12there that like made me laugh a little bit too.
- 46:16You know, it creates a word or something.
- 46:18OK, so now, like they it's gotten later than they expected.
- 46:22It's time for a lockdown. So they all gather around the TV
- 46:25and they turn it on. He sets the alarm.
- 46:28I like that the TV is the security footage of their
- 46:30neighbors. I know.
- 46:32Yeah. Like keeping an eye on those
- 46:33guys. And they see everybody going to
- 46:34Grace's house for the party. And Mary's, like she said they
- 46:38weren't having a party. That feeling sucks.
- 46:41Yeah. And James was like, she's
- 46:43annoying. Anyway, we don't want to go to
- 46:44that party. And I think Mary's like I
- 46:46wanted. Fucker, I sold her the shitty.
- 46:48The shitty. Security system.
- 46:50Mark that show up so the message place is now time for people to
- 46:56purge and that horn blares and that.
- 46:58Wax and siren. Wax and siren disgust, Yeah.
- 47:01Jesse figured that one out on the two, so yeah, it's time to
- 47:05purge y'all. And then Zoe being a Moody
- 47:08teenager is like, I'm going to go be miserable in my room by
- 47:10myself. And then Charlie's like, I don't
- 47:13want to be excited about this. Would you guys purge if you felt
- 47:16the need? And they're like, no, but just
- 47:18like just you don't remember how bad it was back then.
- 47:21Except like James, like, yeah, we would if we ever felt so
- 47:24inclined, but we don't really feel so inclined.
- 47:27So no, we're not going to right this moment.
- 47:29Yeah, and then you think that maybe James and Mary are going
- 47:31to have some time together, but he's like, I need to fill out
- 47:35the paperwork to collect my bonus bonus.
- 47:38So go do your thing, Mary. Do you think?
- 47:43So Henry is actually in Zoe's room.
- 47:46He came to see her father. He's like, he can't kick me out
- 47:49so we can finally talk man to man.
- 47:51And she's like, I don't think this is a good idea, 'cause he
- 47:54hates you and he's just going to make things harder for us to be
- 47:57able to sneak around and see each other.
- 47:58And he's so stupid. It's like, yeah, but it's cool
- 48:01'cause I'm going to tell him like, you're really mature of
- 48:04your age and I love you and like he's totally going to be cool
- 48:08with everything whenever I say that.
- 48:09Yeah, it's fucking groomer language.
- 48:11It really is. I hate that.
- 48:12Like, oh, you're really mature for your age.
- 48:14No, man. You're not even mature.
- 48:16For your age, man, Yeah, come on.
- 48:20So the news is speculating. The news is talking about how
- 48:25some people think that the purge is actually really an
- 48:27eradication of the poor. So there's some of that
- 48:31discourse happening in the background.
- 48:33Yeah. They're like, whoa.
- 48:34I mean, like, the economy, economy, economy is booming.
- 48:37Crime's down. But like, people are saying it
- 48:40might actually be because we're just, like, getting rid of,
- 48:43like, the poor people and not having to, like, you know, take
- 48:46care of them. So it's yeah.
- 48:49Yeah, Mary gets on her little treadmill.
- 48:53Charlie is piloting Timmy. She hears some gunshots nearby
- 48:58and tells James because she's concerned and because it's it's
- 49:02too close. They're in a nice neighborhood.
- 49:04They shouldn't be hearing gunshots.
- 49:05And he's like, it's probably people going to go hunt and
- 49:07they're just, you know, setting off a couple of warm up shots.
- 49:12Charlie's riding his little Timmy around and it happens to
- 49:17look up at the security feed and he sees a man just running down
- 49:22the street. So he starts to freak out, wants
- 49:25to go check and see what that guy is up to.
- 49:27He's out there just screaming for help.
- 49:29He's being chased. Yeah, he says.
- 49:31He's being chased. I guess the person he was with
- 49:33before got killed. And he's like, I don't want to
- 49:35kill, I don't want to hurt anybody.
- 49:37I just need somewhere safe to be.
- 49:38And Charlie ends up opening the door for him and the rest of the
- 49:42family 'cause they're having their own, like, dramatic
- 49:44moments, and they see the system lifting and they freak out.
- 49:48James goes to close it back up, and Charlie manages to get the
- 49:52man inside the house before that happens.
- 49:54So as they're kind of like freaking out trying to figure
- 49:57this out, Oh, oh, Hank gonna walk down the stairs and be like
- 50:00Mr. Sanden, I think this is the perfect time for you and I to
- 50:03talk. And by talk I mean blah blah.
- 50:06Yeah, what happened to Talking Man?
- 50:08What about like, I love your daughter.
- 50:09She's super mature. Because his.
- 50:11His he's 18 and his brain isn't developed and he's not super
- 50:15mature for his age. That's true, yeah.
- 50:16So yeah. They like, I love that every
- 50:19single one of these movies gives us like petty ass reasons that
- 50:22people want to kill somebody. Yeah, I get it.
- 50:25It's kind of interesting though, because it kind of like it
- 50:27grounds it would happen. Yeah, like that's the thing with
- 50:30the Purge, like somebody is just like a little annoyed with
- 50:32somebody and they get in the right kind of froggy mindset on
- 50:36Purge night and. That's how it would be, how it
- 50:40would be. So yeah, they like, they have
- 50:42like a little shootout. Yeah, James hits Henry, but at
- 50:47first he's not sure. He's like, oh God, I didn't
- 50:49shoot Zoe, did I? And I'm like, that's not great
- 50:53that you were just shooting and. He's got to, he's got to return
- 50:57fire. What's he gonna do?
- 50:58Like, just like allow him to like, shoot at him.
- 51:01See, I don't know. I don't know this guy's history.
- 51:03He's got a lot of guns and he seems to know how to use them.
- 51:08So like, I think he's knows what he's doing here.
- 51:10But I wonder how well Hank is at shooting.
- 51:13Like, here's the thing. Because a lot of people, they're
- 51:16like, Oh well, I like to carry a gun for protection.
- 51:18And I don't think they really realize, like, how much practice
- 51:22they would need to be to actually be an effective shooter
- 51:25in a situation because it's not even just like the aiming and
- 51:29being used to the weapon, But it's always like, the adrenaline
- 51:31and everything that's going on and taking into account your
- 51:34surroundings, taking into account, you know, casual
- 51:37bystanders. Like, there's a lot that goes
- 51:41into that. To the point that James isn't
- 51:45sure if he shot his own daughter.
- 51:46Yeah, that exchange that's. True, but it was like such
- 51:49chaos. Yeah, he had to like, blast him.
- 51:51He ended up shooting him. James did not get hit though.
- 51:54Yes, so. James Henry retreats back to
- 51:58Zoe's. Room.
- 51:58Yeah, well, Zoe carries him. Yeah, and he just kind of weighs
- 52:02on the ground and dies. Yeah, James is like looking for
- 52:06Zoe, goes to her room, see see is a dead Hank, but no Zoe.
- 52:12Zoe has decided to go find Mary, and they're talking, but Charlie
- 52:17is like calling her to come look at the camera.
- 52:20And Zoe is just like, just tell dad I'm sorry.
- 52:22I think she is like kind of fucking traumatized because she
- 52:26just watched her boyfriend die after trying to murder her
- 52:29father. So she's dealing with a lot of
- 52:31guilt, a lot of grief. And I'm sure there's also like,
- 52:34an element of like, oh, God, he was right about this loser.
- 52:37Like, yeah. But also, I loved that loser.
- 52:39He's dead. Yeah.
- 52:40Like, there's a lot. There's got to be a lot of
- 52:43emotions going on for her. And she's just like, just tell
- 52:45dad I'm sorry. And then she runs away.
- 52:46Oh. Man, and what a.
- 52:49This family is just falling apart.
- 52:51Can you imagine if his like dying breath was like him
- 52:54growling at her? I mean, it might have been.
- 52:58Yeah, she's just like standing over him.
- 53:04That'd be a weird way to die. So James, Mary and Charlie are
- 53:07watching security footage of a group arriving to the house, and
- 53:13one of them steps forward and says that they can tell that
- 53:16they're good people because they are the haves and they've got
- 53:19the blue Bautistas out front. That suggests that they support
- 53:23the purge. Before then even it's really
- 53:24creepy because like before they start watching that footage and
- 53:27call James in there and James hears a knock at the door and he
- 53:31goes over there to check it and they already know his name.
- 53:33Like Mr. Sand, can we come in like something like that?
- 53:37Let's. Do Sandin.
- 53:38Sandin, whatever. Either way, that's fucking
- 53:40creepy that they already know his name and he just kind of
- 53:43like slowly backs away. Yeah, apparently the neighbors
- 53:46told them who they are and that they took the man in.
- 53:50So he he says that they've got until provisions arrive to
- 53:57return the man. So that way they may purge him.
- 53:59Otherwise they will purge both them.
- 54:01They will break in, purge both the man and the rest of the
- 54:04family. So James, when Mary and Charlie
- 54:10are like, but we're safe though, right 'cause like this is the
- 54:12best security system. He's like, well, and they're
- 54:16like, what? And he's like, well, we tested
- 54:18it and in 99% of cases it's fine.
- 54:22Like it's foolproof. People are intimidated by it,
- 54:25but it's not made for worst case scenario, you know, such as
- 54:28burrowing underground, battering Rams, busting out the window.
- 54:35Opening the door can't handle that shit.
- 54:39Yeah, yeah, yeah. So that it's they're glamour
- 54:43muscles basically. Pretty much, yeah.
- 54:45This house is hot girl fit. Yeah, for sure.
- 54:49So, yeah, they. So he's like, all right, we're
- 54:52going to give them what they want.
- 54:54We're going to go find that guy and we're just going to like
- 54:56give him up because it's either him or us.
- 54:59Mary seems torn, Charlie seems disgusted so he's using Timmy to
- 55:03find the man and when he does he like flashes his lights at him
- 55:06and leads him to his hiding spot.
- 55:08Yeah, this guy, very courageous to trust this whole toy here if
- 55:14I saw that thing. At first he doesn't, but.
- 55:17Yeah, I I get it. But like at the same time, like
- 55:20Jesus, that thing is kind of freaky.
- 55:22And also like I, I just, I don't know if I would do it.
- 55:24I don't. I wouldn't follow this thing.
- 55:26But Mary and James are searching, and this is just one
- 55:28of those endless scenes of people walking up and down.
- 55:31The last like 5 minutes. So the leader asks James to come
- 55:36to the door, and James is like, listen, this is a
- 55:39misunderstanding. My son let him in 'cause he
- 55:41doesn't get the whole purge thing yet.
- 55:43We're trying to find him, but he's, you see the size of my
- 55:47house. Like, yeah, this shit's.
- 55:48Just looking insane this. Isn't a quick process, but we're
- 55:51trying really hard. And then one of the leader, like
- 55:55one of the group members comes up and is like, kind of erratic
- 55:58and the leader just shoots him without flinching.
- 56:00And he's like, that was my friend.
- 56:02You are not. Keep that in mind.
- 56:04Yeah. Dang.
- 56:08So Zoe finds Timmy and talks to Charlie through him.
- 56:12And she's like, listen, stay wherever you are.
- 56:14I'm going to go to your secret hiding spot.
- 56:16And Charlie goes fuck. And the problem is that James, I
- 56:21think, also has a similar idea to go check the secret hiding
- 56:24spot. And when he gets there, he finds
- 56:26the man holding Zoe hostage. And he's like, listen, I don't
- 56:29want to hurt you. I don't want to hurt your
- 56:30family. But I'm not letting go of her
- 56:32for the rest of the night because I'm not going to let
- 56:34them kill me. And James is like, just be a
- 56:37man. Like, just be a man and let them
- 56:39kill you. Like, get up, bro.
- 56:40Yeah. While all of this is happening,
- 56:43Mary has shown up behind the guy and is holding a gun to him and
- 56:49James like gives her cover away. He's like, alright, shoot him
- 56:52Mary. And this causes him to just like
- 56:55throw Zoe. Zoe into the wall.
- 56:57Yeah, she busts her head on something and gets knocked out.
- 57:01James and the man start wrestling like shots fired but
- 57:06ultimately the guy like he gets knocked out.
- 57:09Yeah, he's got a a gut wound. So they tie him up and when he
- 57:14comes to he starts like fighting and James is like get the letter
- 57:19opener and press on his wound and Mary's like.
- 57:23She's straight up stabbing his open wound.
- 57:25Oh my God. They do end up getting him like
- 57:28tied up to a chair. Mary and Charlie are upset about
- 57:33all of this. So Charlie runs off and Mary
- 57:36follows and Zoe comes to you. And James is like, it's going to
- 57:39be OK. It's going to be OK.
- 57:40We're going to take care of this and it'll be OK.
- 57:42And she's like, nothing's ever going to be OK again.
- 57:45Like, look what's happened tonight.
- 57:47Like it's not OK. And he's like, oh shit.
- 57:51So that's when he decides that he he finds Mary and Charlie and
- 57:56he's like, listen, I think I finally get it.
- 57:59We're not going to deliver the man.
- 58:01We're going to fight, but we're also not going to untie the man.
- 58:04The man before that, though, the man was like, all right, send me
- 58:07out there, save your kids. But then that's why I think that
- 58:10gave him a change of hearts. Like, you know what?
- 58:12Fuck that. Now we're going to fight.
- 58:13Yeah, so the group is putting chains on the barricades and
- 58:20they pull them down and break in.
- 58:22James sends Charlie to the basement with the gun.
- 58:25And Mary was like, you gave Charlie a gun.
- 58:29He needs something. He needs something other than
- 58:31Timmy. Yeah.
- 58:32Well, we see in a little bit it doesn't, OK.
- 58:34No, no, it doesn't. But you know, it's, it's kind of
- 58:37I think maybe like a mental thing.
- 58:39Yeah, I get it. Yeah, It's like his security
- 58:41system. Yeah.
- 58:42It's it's a flex, but it means. Nothing.
- 58:44Yeah, exactly. So the this is like, I think
- 58:50this is the fun scene of people going down the hall.
- 58:53And I didn't mind this moment of like, watching the killers.
- 58:56Like, yeah, I like different reactions.
- 58:58Like some of them are like looking at the photos, Some are
- 59:00laughing at the photos, Some are just skipping around gleefully.
- 59:03Some are piggyback riding. And that's this right here is
- 59:06more intense because we know these guys are a threat.
- 59:08Yeah, we know that they absolutely will kill, like in an
- 59:12unrestrained kind of way. And they're like acting super
- 59:15unhinged and just creepy, like they're skipping through the
- 59:18halls and shit like that. They're just having fun.
- 59:21Yes, exactly. They have creepy masks on too.
- 59:23Yes, one of them does manage to find Charlie in the basement and
- 59:27is about to shoot him when James pops up behind him and shoots
- 59:31the person. Yeah, they're trying to get
- 59:35upstairs, reunite with the family, and in their game room a
- 59:38couple comes in. So James starts fighting them.
- 59:41We get the classic horror trope. I don't know how this has become
- 59:44such a trope, but like pool ball to the head.
- 59:47It's effective. Yeah.
- 59:48You know that shit hurts. Yeah, he ends up killing both,
- 59:52and as he's about to walk out, the leader just machetes him.
- 59:56He's got like that shotgun that he has.
- 59:58It's fucking awesome. It's got like a, it's like a
- 1:00:01weed eater handle on top. So you can like get like some
- 1:00:04good grip on it right there. And just also like when he
- 1:00:07walked in that room and like that's the piggybacking couple.
- 1:00:11And like I said, they see him like, oh shit, they just like
- 1:00:14hop off and like dive to the ground.
- 1:00:16It's a really good set. Like, I like that they had a
- 1:00:19nice little fight there. So yeah, James is fogged.
- 1:00:21He got like a machete to the tummy.
- 1:00:23And then the killer just gives him a gentle little yeah on the
- 1:00:27forehead. The gentle perjury.
- 1:00:28Yeah, the gentle perjury. So the others are still like
- 1:00:32wrecking the house somewhere outside when the neighbors come
- 1:00:35up. Black.
- 1:00:36Black. Black.
- 1:00:38Yep. Yeah.
- 1:00:39And I It's a surprising turn of events.
- 1:00:41Yeah, and so they're just coming in.
- 1:00:44They save the whole fat. Like Mary's about to get killed
- 1:00:47before she gets tickled to death.
- 1:00:49I no, that was so funny. She like tackles her to the
- 1:00:52ground. She's like tickle, tickle,
- 1:00:53tickle. I was furious because I was
- 1:00:56thinking about I am incredibly ticklish and if somebody had
- 1:00:59broken in my house and was trying to tell me but then had
- 1:01:02the fucking nerve to tickle me first, I would be furious.
- 1:01:08This, I think, brings up a very interesting question.
- 1:01:12If you are pinned by a killer and one of the other killers is
- 1:01:16tickling you, and this is terrifying, do you think that
- 1:01:19you would still laugh if you're being tickled?
- 1:01:21Or do you think the fear and adrenaline would overcome?
- 1:01:24I would definitely still be ticklish and I can say this
- 1:01:28because I've had like moments where I've been afraid and like
- 1:01:30something is brushed up against me and tickled me.
- 1:01:32So I can absolutely say that I would.
- 1:01:34But I think I would be so fucking stubborn that even
- 1:01:36though like I might be like twitching and stuff, I would
- 1:01:38refuse to let that laugh. Out you got like an angry laugh.
- 1:01:41Yes, I like I would be at the point of like angry crying
- 1:01:45because I'd be so just so mad, like the insult to injury, like
- 1:01:50but anyway, it doesn't matter because the neighbors come and
- 1:01:52they shoot, shoot all the killers and Mary's like, Oh my
- 1:01:55God, we can't thank you enough. And grace is like, you don't
- 1:01:58have to actually. We saw an opportunity.
- 1:02:01We saw that they fucked your shit up.
- 1:02:03I'm like, hey, this is our chance to finally get.
- 1:02:05Them. Yeah.
- 1:02:06So we hate you. And we wanted to just kill your
- 1:02:08husband, but they beat us to it. So we're just.
- 1:02:10We're going to kill the rest of you.
- 1:02:11So we're going to tie you up. And like, Mary's, like,
- 1:02:14pleading. And presumably she's known these
- 1:02:17people for years. And she's like, please, my kids,
- 1:02:20at the very least, like, let them go or let me hug them
- 1:02:25before you kill us all. Like, just something.
- 1:02:27And she's like, begging and doing her best.
- 1:02:29And then, right as the group is about to sacrifice the family we
- 1:02:36forgot about Bloody stranger, he's still in the house.
- 1:02:40He just shoots a couple of them right there and holds the woman
- 1:02:48hostage. She was like, all right.
- 1:02:50He's like, Mary, it's your call. And she was like, we're not
- 1:02:53going to do any more killing. We are going to spend the rest
- 1:02:57of the night. In motherfucking piece.
- 1:03:00I like how she says that and then it just cuts to them all
- 1:03:03awkwardly sitting at the dinner table.
- 1:03:05And she is having some very passive aggressive conversation.
- 1:03:09She's like Mr. Halverson, did you enjoy Grace's party?
- 1:03:12And he's like, fuck yourself, she said.
- 1:03:13I'm sorry, what was that? No, it's a lovely time.
- 1:03:18Yeah, and then she's like, well, I'm glad everybody had a good
- 1:03:21time. And then she very pointedly
- 1:03:22looks over at her children sobbing over their dead father's
- 1:03:25corpse. And Grace takes the moment it is
- 1:03:28758. She's ill.
- 1:03:30Yeah. No, 658.
- 1:03:32Yeah, she makes a play for Mary's gun and the stranger,
- 1:03:38like, comes to restrain her and Mary gets the gun back, breaks
- 1:03:41Grace's nose, and she's like, what did I fucking say?
- 1:03:45It's like a 1/2. She takes the butt of the
- 1:03:47shotgun, boom right to the nose, then grabs her head and slams it
- 1:03:51on the table, breaking the glass.
- 1:03:53I remember when we were in theaters like that.
- 1:03:56Got a huge reaction. Yeah.
- 1:03:57Oh shit, yeah, that's great. And then like the siren sound
- 1:04:03and the purge is over with and everybody just gets up and
- 1:04:06awkwardly walks out the house. Yeah, and before he leaves, the
- 1:04:10bloody stranger just kind of looks at Mary and he's like,
- 1:04:13good luck. Like there's a lot.
- 1:04:17It's a very loaded statement because their their shit's
- 1:04:20fucked. Yeah, I mean, pretty much like
- 1:04:23it's not going to be the same. He just kind of walks out and
- 1:04:27that's pretty much how the movie ends, right?
- 1:04:30Yeah, it's March 22nd. The new Founding Fathers have
- 1:04:34released an early statement that it looks like the most
- 1:04:36successful purge yet. What does that mean?
- 1:04:38What is a successful purge? What parameters are you using?
- 1:04:42Lots of shit fucked up out there.
- 1:04:44It looks like things went pretty well last night.
- 1:04:47Yeah, I like how they did that because it's the credits playing
- 1:04:50and you just get these like radio broadcasts of just all of
- 1:04:53the aftermath that's happened. It's kind of it kind of we
- 1:04:58should marinate. Yeah, for a little bit, yeah.
- 1:05:00I I always like it when it's like a more quiet credits like
- 1:05:03that 'cause it's, it's chilling. Yeah, it really is.
- 1:05:06Yeah, and it emphasizes that we're ending this on a bleak
- 1:05:09note. It's not happy.
- 1:05:11James is dead. The country's fucked.
- 1:05:13Yep. Like that's.
- 1:05:14How it goes? Yeah, Yep.
- 1:05:16So yeah, that's it. I think I'll bump it to a 7.25
- 1:05:21because the parts that aren't just walking down the hall are
- 1:05:24really good. That's true.
- 1:05:25Those are really good parts. That's why that those parts
- 1:05:29enough carry it to the seven for me.
- 1:05:32Everything else drops it down to that seven for me.
- 1:05:35I'm keeping mine. OK.
- 1:05:36So our average is slightly up at 7.125.
- 1:05:40Yeah, I mean and the change, it's pretty obvious like yeah,
- 1:05:42don't have so much dead time and.
- 1:05:44Yeah, spend some of that building up the the family a
- 1:05:47little bit. Or like half the people break in
- 1:05:49a little bit earlier and like extend that.
- 1:05:51Like there was so many of them you didn't have to use them as
- 1:05:54cannon. Fodders if you want.
- 1:05:55If you want like scenes of people creeping down the hall to
- 1:05:58be tense, then you need to give a reason for it to be
- 1:06:00introduced. Like a threat in the house.
- 1:06:03Nobody bought that that dude was actually going to be.
- 1:06:06Maybe some people did, but I didn't like, I mean, it just it
- 1:06:08was very clear that that guy didn't have any like intentions
- 1:06:11to kill. Yeah, we just need like the
- 1:06:14this, but this so this. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:06:17Yeah. Talia, She was, I'm going to say
- 1:06:22she was, she was all alarmed. She was pretty alert during the
- 1:06:28movie. She farted during the opening
- 1:06:30klaxon siren. Yeah, whenever the siren
- 1:06:32sounded. Yeah, it was a yeah, that was a
- 1:06:35defense fart. Yeah, she was definitely
- 1:06:37nervous. Like that's our security system
- 1:06:39guys. She did want to go out at about
- 1:06:4150 minutes. That's when the people broke in.
- 1:06:43And I think in her head she was like, this is when I would take
- 1:06:45my bathroom break on Purge tonight.
- 1:06:47I would take the opportunity to run out.
- 1:06:52So I think Talia is going to give this.
- 1:06:56I think she's going to give it an 8.
- 1:06:57OK, I agree. Yeah, I think that she liked
- 1:07:00this. A lot, yeah.
- 1:07:00I think being locked up and the threat is on the other side of
- 1:07:04the door and we're not letting her do anything with it.
- 1:07:06That would be frustrating for. Me.
- 1:07:07Yeah, absolutely. Zoe's ultimate warrior hunter.
- 1:07:11What is? Who is Zoe's ultimate warrior?
- 1:07:13Timmy. Just kind of like sneaking
- 1:07:17through the house. How does it get on different
- 1:07:22levels of things? Same.
- 1:07:23Question for silent Yeah, Zoe can be pretty silent.
- 1:07:26So like, we are freaked out by her pretty regularly.
- 1:07:29She can also see in the dark. Yeah, and she's she's a black
- 1:07:32cat, so when the lights are out, she's invisible.
- 1:07:36And so you don't know she's there until you're like bumping
- 1:07:39into her. Yeah, so Timmy.
- 1:07:41Timmy OK. All right, who did you relate
- 1:07:46to? I guess I'd relate to like, the
- 1:07:50people that they're talking about on the news that are like
- 1:07:53protesting the purge, you know, 'cause like, this is clearly a
- 1:07:59thinly veiled attempt at getting rid of the the poor people.
- 1:08:03Yeah, as Jean Leshwar said, stupid poor people, stupid poor
- 1:08:07people. I have more money than you.
- 1:08:09Stupid poor people. Stupid poor people.
- 1:08:12You can't even afford food. What the fuck?
- 1:08:17You've heard it. Is that a song?
- 1:08:18Yeah, OK. He's, yeah, It's like he's a
- 1:08:21satirical musician. OK, I got you.
- 1:08:24OK. You've definitely heard the
- 1:08:26song. It's from Guns Don't Kill People
- 1:08:28I Kill. People.
- 1:08:29Oh, that OK? I got you.
- 1:08:30I got you. With guns.
- 1:08:32Yeah. I think that the person that I
- 1:08:36would relate to is, I'm going to say the person that and James
- 1:08:42called at the opening there, that's like, we did this as a
- 1:08:44team and I could fill her eyes roll.
- 1:08:48Yeah. Whenever he was saying that, cuz
- 1:08:50whenever I worked in customer service and I had to work with
- 1:08:53sales reps directly, we did this together.
- 1:08:56Buddy. I'm like fuck you.
- 1:08:57I didn't do shit. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:00You know that like if she's in a bullpen, she's like making a
- 1:09:02face at somebody, like mimicking along with.
- 1:09:04Him, yeah. Or like if I did help them and
- 1:09:06I'm like, Oh yeah, like I helped you do this.
- 1:09:08Like OK, I'm not getting any a percentage of this shit.
- 1:09:11Thanks for the double XL sweatshirt.
- 1:09:13You got me on your cruise. Do do.
- 1:09:15Thank you. Actually did that.
- 1:09:18I know I. Remember.
- 1:09:19He he brought me this like fucking hoodie.
- 1:09:21And it's like, yeah, I got this was on vacation as a thank you.
- 1:09:24I'm like it. Would be nice if it wasn't like
- 1:09:265 sizes is too big. I feel like he bought it for
- 1:09:29himself. He's like, I can't wear this.
- 1:09:31And then, yeah, I'll just give it to Travis to thank him.
- 1:09:35Yeah, man. So yeah, that's, that's what I
- 1:09:39relate to. All right, So it's not a
- 1:09:44franchise. So we can do a dream sequel for
- 1:09:47this. Here's the thing, though, is my
- 1:09:48dream sequel would be exactly what they ended up doing.
- 1:09:51Yeah. Like opening up, seeing
- 1:09:53different, like, ways that they're like.
- 1:09:55I like that we get just kind of a typical purge night from like
- 1:10:00the common man's perspective. I like that we get the political
- 1:10:03element of somebody trying to end the purge.
- 1:10:05I like that we get the first purge, which explains why
- 1:10:08everybody's going towards killing instead of, you know,
- 1:10:12just doing drugs and partying. And stuff like how it starts
- 1:10:16out. Yes, yeah, I and I like that we
- 1:10:19get the forever purge because the question in my head was
- 1:10:21always like, what's stopping people from.
- 1:10:23Yeah. Like how can you determine if
- 1:10:26this death was done at like the time, like the second after the
- 1:10:30purge stopped or like, you know, like you could theoretically do
- 1:10:33it like a little bit after and probably still get away with it?
- 1:10:35Yeah. So like, I'm not trying to like
- 1:10:37do a cop out. It's just like it.
- 1:10:39The sequels have always addressed the things that I
- 1:10:42would want addressed in this universe, and there's not going
- 1:10:44to be a way for me to talk about what I want on a sequel without
- 1:10:47referencing things that have already been done.
- 1:10:49I guess that's fair because I mean they do just touch on so
- 1:10:52many different things and the other ones with the
- 1:10:53opportunities. Plus we get Frank Grillo and I
- 1:10:56don't want to. I don't want to create an AU or
- 1:10:58we don't have Frank Grillo. See I do like him, but the weird
- 1:11:03thing about the sequels is they kind of turn into quasi action
- 1:11:06movies at a certain point. They, like, stop becoming
- 1:11:09horror. Like, they're like, OK, we'll
- 1:11:10give them some creepy masks. Every now and then, though,
- 1:11:13like, at the same time, it's like Frank Guerilla is just
- 1:11:15going to roll in there and just like, shoot up a bunch of
- 1:11:16people. Like it's just going to get in
- 1:11:18some gunfights. Yeah, they're like, I'd say
- 1:11:20they're like horror action. Like they're right there in that
- 1:11:23like liminal space between the two.
- 1:11:25And then in the First Purge, like the drug dealer dude, like
- 1:11:28the drug kingpin, like he just like goes full blown like
- 1:11:33military like vigilante type shit.
- 1:11:35And he's just like, he's like a fucking action movie star in
- 1:11:38that. One, yeah.
- 1:11:39Same with Frank Grillo, he's a he is a like an action star in
- 1:11:42his moments too. So yeah, yeah, I feel like the
- 1:11:48next one though did a great job, like keeping it horror because
- 1:11:52like. A Oh God, that moment where the
- 1:11:54couple is like stranded. Yes, and they're being chased by
- 1:11:59that crew. The car dies on the bridge.
- 1:12:02And that's another fucked up thing too, because it it already
- 1:12:05starts laying that groundwork of like, OK, these people are doing
- 1:12:08purge preps including like maiming, like destroying
- 1:12:12property before the purge has started.
- 1:12:15Yeah, they're like, they're make like getting their targets.
- 1:12:18Yeah. All right, we're going to hunt
- 1:12:19these people. Yeah.
- 1:12:20So it's fucking scary, yeah. OK, so tagline.
- 1:12:26Tagline. Let's see.
- 1:12:36I don't know why but my brain wants to do like a society
- 1:12:39crossover. So it's like, first we dine,
- 1:12:42then we copulate, then we purge. Kind of like that.
- 1:12:47Yeah, it. Like it?
- 1:12:49Kind. Of similar themes though, no.
- 1:12:51Sure, like when I was thinking in my head, I was like, I I for
- 1:12:54some reason I associate the suicide like that suicide.
- 1:12:59Yeah, I like I kind of that gets tied in with this movie for me
- 1:13:04somehow. So yeah, sure, like I like that.
- 1:13:07Whatever, man. Like we need that.
- 1:13:09We need dream sequel there society purge crossover.
- 1:13:13Yes. Because I feel like they would
- 1:13:16be like big people like in the purge community, like.
- 1:13:20Trying to push it, yeah. Like we need to get rid of these
- 1:13:22people and then like, that's also like shunt a little bit
- 1:13:25during this. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:27OK, sure. There we go.
- 1:13:29We got it. All right, now it's time for
- 1:13:33reviews. OK, so as I said before, I
- 1:13:36struggled to find a review that had actual plot points about
- 1:13:41what they didn't like about the movie.
- 1:13:42I did eventually find one so and it is a one out of 10.
- 1:13:48So the original series of Star Trek had this idea a long time
- 1:13:52ago and did it better. This movie takes that premise
- 1:13:54and drowns it in a whole lot of stupid advanced security system.
- 1:13:57Is some laughable metal screens and security cameras?
- 1:13:59Check. Safe room?
- 1:14:00Active defenses to keep people attacking the metal screens?
- 1:14:03Layered defenses at all? Just leaving the country?
- 1:14:05Why do any of that? All crime is legal except
- 1:14:08weapons above a certain grade or attacking government officials
- 1:14:11as above a certain rank, but no one is available to enforce
- 1:14:13these restrictions, check. Bringing a knife to a gunfight,
- 1:14:16check. Using gun as a melee weapon,
- 1:14:19check. Splitting up protagonist to
- 1:14:21wander alone in an under siege dangerous situation, check.
- 1:14:25Depending on guns for your family to defend themselves, but
- 1:14:27with no particular evidence of any of them are trained to use
- 1:14:30guns or are trusted for much of the movie to have or use a gun
- 1:14:33until it's dramatically appropriate check.
- 1:14:36I want to purge by engaging in random murder, but I will pause
- 1:14:39to gloat, slash, pose when I'm not actually about to accomplish
- 1:14:42said murder so I can be completely unsurprisingly shot
- 1:14:44from behind at the last moment. So that I that I have so
- 1:14:48helpfully supplied check more than once let me compromise the
- 1:14:52supposed safety of our secure home to load a total stranger in
- 1:14:55check. I drive a creepy remote control
- 1:14:58Chucky doll spy came around my own home to no real end check.
- 1:15:02Creepy older possessive boyfriend thinking if I kill my
- 1:15:04hot younger girlfriends dad then I will win her heart or at least
- 1:15:06her body check. Bonus points for this being then
- 1:15:09essentially unimportant for the rest of the movie once the
- 1:15:11boyfriend is summarily killed for the crime of attacking your
- 1:15:13protagonist. One could go on, but most
- 1:15:16egregiously, the movie gives us 1% are protagonists who feel
- 1:15:19entitled to hold themselves above the violence that engulfs
- 1:15:21the country. 1% are antagonists who feel entitled to cleanse
- 1:15:25Society of quote UN quote lesser, IE less rich members and
- 1:15:28more. 1% are antagonists who want to take vengeance on our
- 1:15:31unsympathetic protagonists for being slightly richer than they
- 1:15:34are, when they should be taking vengeance for being so craply
- 1:15:37unimpressive security systems. The best case scenario would be
- 1:15:41the tough, apparently innocent black veteran being the only
- 1:15:43survivor with all the unsympathetic characters killing
- 1:15:46each other off. Spoiler this does not happen.
- 1:15:50It is incredibly trope laden when you have it listed out like
- 1:15:54that. It is, yeah.
- 1:15:55But like, The thing is, with stuff like this, I feel like
- 1:15:59somebody would probably want to fulfill their fantasy of being a
- 1:16:03horror movie villain during the Purge.
- 1:16:05With this. And I feel like they would try
- 1:16:07and like do the tropes and shit like that.
- 1:16:08I feel like there are people out there that do that.
- 1:16:10Yeah, I do think that there are people that would, like,
- 1:16:13overestimate what it really takes to kill somebody or be in
- 1:16:18a fight like that because you say that all the time.
- 1:16:20There are people whose egos are way bigger than anything that
- 1:16:23they can actually do. And they would definitely go out
- 1:16:26there and be like, Oh yeah, no, I'm going to kill some people
- 1:16:28and I'm not going to have any harm to myself, including
- 1:16:30psychological damage of murdering another human.
- 1:16:33Yeah, I've always interpreted the perjures that like come to
- 1:16:38the door looking for the guy like as Edgeward 4 Chan users.
- 1:16:43Like they just they don't have like a strong grip on what
- 1:16:48reality actually is and I don't. Think they have to be on 4 Chan
- 1:16:52to do that because they're so fucking rich they're isolated
- 1:16:55from that doesn't the most of society.
- 1:16:57I think the fortune comes mostly from how they interact with
- 1:17:02everybody. So like cringy like because the
- 1:17:05guy does like the like forced laughter and show like that
- 1:17:07because I think he thinks he looks cool or creepy or
- 1:17:09something like that. I don't know.
- 1:17:11I. Think it's a little bit a little
- 1:17:14bit of that, but I also think that some of these people that
- 1:17:17engage in the purge that really truly have bought into this
- 1:17:20whole we are cleansing our souls, whether or not they
- 1:17:22actually believe it or if they believe that it gives them
- 1:17:25justification. You kind of see almost like
- 1:17:29they're in a trance. Like think about Grace at the
- 1:17:31end where she was like, we hate you, but she doesn't look like
- 1:17:34somebody who's like hating somebody.
- 1:17:36She looks like somebody who's almost like, well, this is what
- 1:17:40it is. This is the doctrine we have
- 1:17:42been given. We are going to do this.
- 1:17:44And I think you you see that throughout the franchise.
- 1:17:48I think honestly, the funnier, funnily enough, to the point I'm
- 1:17:53making in the wine with the the election, election year.
- 1:17:58Yeah, there we go. The new founding fathers show
- 1:18:02more rage towards the senator than any of the like typical
- 1:18:06people that we see killing aside from candy bar girl.
- 1:18:10Oh God, yeah. But she's just yeah, her base
- 1:18:12level is unhinged. So, but yeah, I oh.
- 1:18:16Man, that just made me think, I want to see Russell Crowe during
- 1:18:19the purge. Oh my God, unhinged.
- 1:18:22Somebody like cuts him off. He's like, I'm fucking that
- 1:18:24person. Purge and I yeah, that's how he
- 1:18:27that's the game he plays when there's no Purge.
- 1:18:29Imagine what he would do if there.
- 1:18:30Was a purge. I want to know.
- 1:18:32Yeah, another dream sequel. Yes, I want a Texas accent in
- 1:18:37some of. His scenes OK are we ready for
- 1:18:43listener reviews? Yes.
- 1:18:44All right, let me check and see if we got anything since just to
- 1:18:48be sure. OK, No, we're.
- 1:18:50Good. I know Chad sent one.
- 1:18:51He did, yeah, I got his. OK, OK, so we will start off
- 1:18:56with our own Instagram review. Who is Cube saves OK.
- 1:19:01And says the purge got good when they left the house.
- 1:19:05Yeah, I mean, that's fair. Like, I understand why people
- 1:19:07think that. And yeah, it becomes a lot
- 1:19:11better as a series once it opens up like that.
- 1:19:14But whenever we first got this, I really just appreciated a nice
- 1:19:17little home invasion movie because I love home invasion
- 1:19:20movies. They are so creepy to me.
- 1:19:22I just like this as like a setup for it.
- 1:19:25I didn't even really think, oh shit, we can go out there like,
- 1:19:28you know, it's like a video game.
- 1:19:29I didn't know that that was out of bounds.
- 1:19:32Now. Now we're going to be able to
- 1:19:33open up the sandbox and play a little.
- 1:19:35Bit they haven't coded that part of the world.
- 1:19:38Still in alpha? OK, and then we'll hop over to
- 1:19:41Twitter. First off, we have Ward Zombie.
- 1:19:45Who says? I remember being disappointed
- 1:19:48with this one. The later movies in the series
- 1:19:50were more of what I was looking for.
- 1:19:52Not a bad movie, just not fitting for the theme.
- 1:19:55Yes, and that and honestly that is how I felt about the movie
- 1:19:58when we went into it. Now that we have the series we
- 1:20:01have, like I said at the beginning, I can appreciate this
- 1:20:04movie for what it is and its place in the franchise.
- 1:20:07Yeah, I agree. And I'm glad that it ended up
- 1:20:09working out 'cause like it's a risky move doing like, all
- 1:20:13right, we're going to like really scale back and just put
- 1:20:15it in a home. And then if that does well, then
- 1:20:17we'll do like a big city because you have to do well with the one
- 1:20:21that nobody wants first. Yes, yes.
- 1:20:23So that's kind of tough, all right.
- 1:20:25And our final review is from Chad, so he has a lengthy one
- 1:20:30typed out here. So says I love all subgenres of
- 1:20:35horror, but a particular favorite of mine is the one
- 1:20:38percenter horror examples like Society Ready or Not The Hunts
- 1:20:42come to mind, But The Purge is one of the most sterling
- 1:20:45examples of this subgenre and manages to flip it on its head
- 1:20:48when you see the elite going after the elite, essentially
- 1:20:51cannibalizing itself. A small and contained film that
- 1:20:54does an incredible job at world building one.
- 1:20:57That's true. It does a good job of like
- 1:20:59setting things up. One gets the feeling through the
- 1:21:02commentary that this film is laying down that America might
- 1:21:05not be too far away from a world like this.
- 1:21:08Is the movie subtle? Only if you consider
- 1:21:11sledgehammers subtle. But sometimes as film nerds, we
- 1:21:15need that sort of blunt force drama and film to wake us up and
- 1:21:18make us face some harsh realities.
- 1:21:22I've said that before that I'm not always opposed to a lack of
- 1:21:27subtlety because I think sometimes if something is too
- 1:21:29subtle, it will slip by audiences.
- 1:21:32And I think sometimes film makers don't want their message
- 1:21:36to be misinterpreted. And I'd say especially after
- 1:21:39test audiences, we're like, yeah, no, the purge sounds like
- 1:21:41a good idea. Yeah.
- 1:21:43I. I get it.
- 1:21:45But when you get way too like you're way too upfront with it
- 1:21:50and you just start like actually saying it like multiple times,
- 1:21:53it kind of takes me out of it because like, OK, I get it.
- 1:21:56You're trying to tell me what the movie is.
- 1:21:57I get it like treat your people smart sometimes too, you know,
- 1:22:01like maybe say it once, but you don't have to repeat it.
- 1:22:04Repeat it. Repeat it every single moment
- 1:22:06you get. Fair enough.
- 1:22:08Yeah. So, OK, but yeah, that was a
- 1:22:11really good review. I agree with all that world
- 1:22:13building. It sets a lot of awesome things
- 1:22:15up. And I do love some one percenter
- 1:22:18horror because you get a little bit of that aspirational set
- 1:22:26pieces, like who doesn't occasionally dream of living in
- 1:22:30a mansion? You know what I mean?
- 1:22:32Like and not having to worry about money, but then to have it
- 1:22:36flipped on its head and be like, hey, just, you know, like you
- 1:22:39said at the beginning, Monkey's paw.
- 1:22:41Yep. It's interesting.
- 1:22:44OK. OK.
- 1:22:45So I think that's it for this one.
- 1:22:47OK, next week I think we're going to do Shaun of the Dead.
- 1:22:52Shaun of the Dead. Yeah, I've.
- 1:22:54Been waffling between a couple of different ones, so Travis
- 1:22:56didn't know which one I was going with until just now.
- 1:22:59Hell yeah, we're doing Shaun of the Dead.
- 1:23:01I'm not going to check where it's streaming right now because

- 1:24:44way platforms like this work, it does tell the algorithm it
- 1:24:47helps. Yeah, it it helps us.
- 1:24:49There's a reason why people say yeah, smash that like button.
- 1:24:53Yeah, we at least try and save it for the end of the show,
- 1:24:55yeah. And we're trying not to be
