- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Thursday.
- 0:15It's the 8th of January. How are you going?
- 0:18Great to have your company today because if you love music, today
- 0:21is an amazing day. Today is Elvis Presley's
- 0:24birthday and is it? As if that's not enough, it's
- 0:27also David Bowie's birthday that is 2 Cracker Jacks 2 icons once
- 0:33a day, January 8th. And if, well, that's a little
- 0:36too much for you, it's also Bubble bath day.
- 0:39So if you need to, you can pull yourself a sudsy bath and soak
- 0:42and listen to some music, some jailhouse rock or a little Space
- 0:46Oddity. But wherever you are and no
- 0:49matter what you're doing, bathtub or music or none, you
- 0:52have taken a moment from your day to spend it with me and with
- 0:55God's Word. So let us go back in time to
- 0:59this incredible journey of Jesus with his disciples and his
- 1:03teaching. And we're going to hear some
- 1:06remarkable stories today that have kind of changed the way
- 1:09that we see the world with the Good Samaritan, the one most
- 1:12important commandments. And we'll even meet Mary and
- 1:14Martha. So Holy Spirit, just still our
- 1:18hearts to hear your words and your way and made that rub off
- 1:23on us as we read these words together in Luke chapter 10.
- 1:39The Lord now chose 72 other disciples and sent them ahead in
- 1:43pairs to all the towns and places He planned to visit.
- 1:47These were His instructions to them.
- 1:49The harvest is great, but the work is a few.
- 1:53So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest.
- 1:56Ask him to send more workers into the field.
- 2:00Now go and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among
- 2:04wolves. Don't take any money with you,
- 2:08nor a traveller's bag, nor an extra pair of sandals.
- 2:12And don't stop to greet anyone on the road.
- 2:15Whenever you enter someone's home, first say, may God's peace
- 2:19be on this house. If those who live there are
- 2:22peaceful, the blessing will stand.
- 2:25If they are not, the blessing will return to you.
- 2:28Don't move around from home to home.
- 2:30Stay in one place, eating and drinking what they provide.
- 2:34Don't hesitate to accept hospitality because those who
- 2:37work deserve their pay. If you enter a town and it
- 2:42welcomes you, eat whatever is set before you heal the sick and
- 2:46tell them the Kingdom of God is near you now.
- 2:50But if a town refuses to welcome you, go out into the streets and
- 2:54say we wipe even the dust of your town from our feet to show
- 2:58that we have abandoned you to your fate.
- 3:01And know this, the Kingdom of God is near.
- 3:06I assure you, even wicked Sodom will be better off than such a
- 3:09town on Judgement Day. What sorrow awaits you, Corazon
- 3:15and Bethsaida? For if the miracles I did in you
- 3:18had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have
- 3:22repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap
- 3:26and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse.
- 3:30Yes, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on Judgement Day than
- 3:34you. And you people of Capernaum,
- 3:38will you be honoured in heaven? No, you will go down to the
- 3:42place of the dead. Then he said to the disciples,
- 3:47Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me, and anyone
- 3:52who rejects you is rejecting me, and anyone who rejects me is
- 3:58rejecting God who sent me. When the 72 disciples return,
- 4:03they joyfully reported to him. Lord, even the demons obey us
- 4:07when we use your name. Jesus told them, I saw Satan
- 4:12fall from heaven like lightning. Look, I've given you authority
- 4:17over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes
- 4:21and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.
- 4:26But don't rejoice because evil spirits obey you.
- 4:29Rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.
- 4:34At that same time, Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy
- 4:37Spirit, and he said, Oh Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank
- 4:43you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise
- 4:46and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike.
- 4:50Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.
- 4:54My Father has entrusted everything to me.
- 4:57No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one
- 5:01truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the
- 5:06Son chooses to reveal Him. Then when they were alone, he
- 5:11turned to the disciples and said, Blessed are the eyes that
- 5:15see what you have seen. I tell you, many prophets and
- 5:19kings long to see what you see, but they didn't see it, and they
- 5:22longed to hear what you hear, but they didn't hear it.
- 5:28One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by
- 5:32asking him this question. Teacher, what should I do to
- 5:36inherit eternal life? Jesus replied.
- 5:40What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?
- 5:44The man answered, You must love the Lord your God with all your
- 5:47heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind, and
- 5:53love your neighbour as yourself, right?
- 5:56Jesus told him, do this and you will live.
- 5:59The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, And
- 6:04who is my neighbour? Jesus replied with a story.
- 6:08A Jewish man was travelling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and
- 6:12he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his
- 6:15clothes, beat him up and left him half dead beside the road.
- 6:20By chance a priest came along, but when he saw the man lying
- 6:24there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him
- 6:27by. A temple assistant walked over
- 6:30and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the
- 6:33other side. Then a despised Samaritan came
- 6:37along and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.
- 6:42Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive
- 6:45oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own
- 6:50donkey and took him to an inn where he took care of him.
- 6:54The next day he handed the innkeeper 2 silver coins telling
- 6:57him take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than
- 7:01this, I'll pay you the next time I'm here.
- 7:05Now, which of these three would you say was a neighbour to the
- 7:07man who was attacked by the bandits?
- 7:10Jesus asked. The man replied the one who
- 7:13showed him mercy. Then Jesus said yes, now go and
- 7:18do the same. As Jesus and the disciples
- 7:23continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a
- 7:26certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into
- 7:29her home. Her sister Mary sat at the
- 7:33Lord's feet listening to what he taught.
- 7:35But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing.
- 7:39She came to Jesus and said, Lord, doesn't it seem unfair to
- 7:43you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work?
- 7:47Tell her to come and help me. The Lord said to her, My dear
- 7:51Martha, you were worried and upset over all these details.
- 7:56There is only one thing worth being concerned about.
- 8:00Mary has discovered it and it will not be taken from her.
- 8:13Jesus, you come to us brimming with truth.
- 8:17In fact, you are the truth. And so it's with such joy that
- 8:22we are able to read these stories and hear you sharing
- 8:26your ideas and giving instructions to your disciples
- 8:29to go and to minister in this world.
- 8:33Lord, as we read this chapter today, we're struck by your
- 8:38statement that it's the childlike who you welcome into
- 8:43your Kingdom. Lord, that it's not when we feel
- 8:46sophisticated or intelligent or successful that you are most
- 8:51delighted by us, but it's when we come to you with a simple
- 8:56faith, with curiosity and wide open hearts ready to accept you
- 9:01and your ways. Our Lord, I pray that you
- 9:05continually breakdown the complexities that we build
- 9:09around us and replace them with a childlike faith in you.
- 9:15And with that childlike faith, our ability to love as we
- 9:20receive your love, that we can love those around us like this
- 9:24Good Samaritan does. Our Lord, you are the greatest
- 9:28example of that love to us, and so we just thank you for all
- 9:33that you have done for us and your great, great, unfathomable
- 9:36love for us. We pray all of this in your
- 9:39loving name, Jesus, Amen.
