- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 47, can you believe it? We're almost at 50! Lucas: I know, and I'm so proud of how far we've come. Today, we're going somewhere quiet. Luna: Ooh, a library? I love libraries. All those books... Lucas: Yes, the library! In Dutch, it's 'de bibliotheek'. Let's say that together: de bibliotheek. Luna: De bibliotheek. That's a long word, but it sounds nice. Lucas: It is. And of course, in a library, you find books. 'Het boek'. Luna: Het boek. We learned 'boek' in a previous episode, right? Household items? Lucas: Exactly. So you already know 'het boek'. Perfect. Today we'll focus on phrases you can use at the library. Luna: Great. So what's the first thing I say when I walk in? Lucas: Well, if you want to borrow a book, you say 'Ik wil een boek lenen.' I want to borrow a book. Luna: Ik wil een boek lenen. That's four words: Ik, wil, een, boek, lenen. But 'lenen' means 'borrow'? Lucas: Yes, 'lenen' is 'to borrow'. So 'Ik wil een boek lenen' — I want to borrow a book. Luna: Ik wil een boek lenen. Let me try again: Ik wil een boek lenen. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if you're holding a specific book and want to ask 'May I borrow this book?', you say 'Mag ik dit boek lenen?' Luna: Mag ik dit boek lenen? So 'mag' is 'may', 'dit' is 'this'. Mag ik dit boek lenen? Lucas: Exactly right. Let's imagine you're at the counter with a book. You say: 'Mag ik dit boek lenen?' Luna: Mag ik dit boek lenen? That sounds polite. I like it. Lucas: It is. And after they say yes, you might want to know how long you can keep it. So you ask: 'Hoe lang kan ik het houden?' Luna: Hoe lang kan ik het houden? 'Hoe lang' is 'how long', 'kan' is 'can', 'ik' is 'I', 'het' is 'it', 'houden' is 'keep'. So how long can I keep it? Lucas: Yes. 'Houden' means 'to keep' in this context. Hoe lang kan ik het houden? Luna: Hoe lang kan ik het houden? I'll remember that. And what about asking when they're open? You know, opening hours? Lucas: Good question. You ask: 'Wat zijn de openingstijden?' — What are the opening hours? Luna: Wat zijn de openingstijden? That's a mouthful. De openingstijden. Lucas: It is, but it's very useful. You can also ask 'Hoe laat gaat de bibliotheek open?' — What time does the library open? But let's stick with 'Wat zijn de openingstijden' for now. Luna: Wat zijn de openingstijden. I'll practice that one. So let me recap: I walk in, I say 'Ik wil een boek lenen.' Or 'Mag ik dit boek lenen?' Then 'Hoe lang kan ik het houden?' and maybe 'Wat zijn de openingstijden?' Lucas: Perfect summary! Now let's put it all in a little scene. Imagine you're at the library counter, Luna. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Hallo! Ik wil een boek lenen. Lucas: The librarian says 'Welk boek?' So you say 'Dit boek. Mag ik dit boek lenen?' Luna: Mag ik dit boek lenen? Lucas: Librarian: 'Ja, natuurlijk.' Then you ask 'Hoe lang kan ik het houden?' Luna: Hoe lang kan ik het houden? Lucas: Librarian: 'Drie weken.' Three weeks. And you might ask 'Wat zijn de openingstijden?' to plan your next visit. Luna: Wat zijn de openingstijden? Great, I think I've got it. Can we practice once more? Lucas: Of course. Repeat after me: Ik wil een boek lenen. Luna: Ik wil een boek lenen. Lucas: Mag ik dit boek lenen? Luna: Mag ik dit boek lenen? Lucas: Hoe lang kan ik het houden? Luna: Hoe lang kan ik het houden? Lucas: Wat zijn de openingstijden? Luna: Wat zijn de openingstijden? Ah, that's getting easier. Lucas: You did great. Remember, you can always visit your local 'bibliotheek' and try these phrases. Dutch people will appreciate the effort. Luna: Absolutely. And I love that we're building on words we already know, like 'boek'. It makes learning feel solid. Lucas: That's the Fexingo way. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Luna: Doei!
