Latest / Birdland Territory / Tough weekend in Cleveland
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Oh, it's happened before. Tough series in Cleveland for the Orioles.
- 0:10Speaker 1: When we said that before a lot unfortunately, and it
- 0:13Speaker 1: certainly was true this weekend, Welcome in everybody to Birdland Territory,
- 0:18Speaker 1: our latest edition with Steve Mleski, Brad Brock, the former
- 0:21Speaker 1: Rose All Star pitcher, and Tim barberlace from one of
- 0:24Speaker 1: five to seven the fan guys. That was frustrating for Birdland,
- 0:28Speaker 1: no doubt, the Orioles not scoring in thirty one of
- 0:31Speaker 1: thirty six innings in four days. They bunch runs in
- 0:35Speaker 1: a couple innings, but not nearly enough. I mean, what
- 0:39Speaker 1: is your take on the offensive struggles in Cleveland? And
- 0:42Speaker 1: having said that Cleveland's kind a pretty good pitching staff,
- 0:45Speaker 1: we can't forget that, but it still gets frustrating for
- 0:47Speaker 1: the Orioles to see this offense and the Oriols and
- 0:50Speaker 1: their fans to see this offense scuffling.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I think it's, you know, talking with Steve before the
- 0:57Speaker 3: show here, it's Cleveland's one of those places they have
- 1:00Speaker 3: great pitching, great defense. We've talked about it before the series,
- 1:03Speaker 3: and it played out pretty much how we.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Thought it might go. It's just a tough place.
- 1:06Speaker 3: To get things going, and when you play in Cleveland especially,
- 1:10Speaker 3: it always felt like you needed to get the lead
- 1:12Speaker 3: because you knew what was going to come behind it
- 1:14Speaker 3: with a good starting pitching followed by a phenomenal bullpen
- 1:17Speaker 3: there So being the away team, I don't know if
- 1:20Speaker 3: it's putting more pressure on yourself to get stuff going
- 1:23Speaker 3: early or whatever the case may be, but it kind
- 1:25Speaker 3: of just played out how we thought it might go. Unfortunately,
- 1:28Speaker 3: the Oils, you know, close there in a couple of
- 1:30Speaker 3: the games, but besides that, it just kind of seemed
- 1:32Speaker 3: like an offensive struggle the entire weekend.
- 1:35Speaker 5: I think, unfortunately, Brad, that's just been a theme with
- 1:38Speaker 5: this team this year. When I was diving into the
- 1:41Speaker 5: numbers prior to the game today, the Orioles offense in
- 1:45Speaker 5: the first three innings, they just have struggled to get
- 1:48Speaker 5: any type of production out of their lineup. They've only
- 1:53Speaker 5: scored seventeen runs in the first three innings this year.
- 1:57Speaker 5: In games this year, only the Blue Jays have scored less.
- 2:00Speaker 5: They entered today with seventy three strikeouts in the first
- 2:03Speaker 5: three innings, third most in baseball the one to eighty
- 2:06Speaker 5: one batting average. That's the only the Reds have a
- 2:10Speaker 5: worse batting average than the Orioles in the first three innings,
- 2:14Speaker 5: but conversely, they're among the best offenses in baseball in
- 2:19Speaker 5: the final three innings. And we saw a miraculous comeback
- 2:23Speaker 5: Friday night that was fantastic at Jeremiah Jackson playing the
- 2:27Speaker 5: role of hero again. But the issue is it's tough
- 2:31Speaker 5: to do that with a lot of regularity. The Orioles
- 2:34Speaker 5: already have six come from behind wins this season, which
- 2:37Speaker 5: is tied for six month most in baseball. But to
- 2:41Speaker 5: expect that day in and day out, that's just really
- 2:44Speaker 5: tough to do.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I just think it puts a lot of pressure.
- 2:49Speaker 3: You know, when you when you can't get anything going early,
- 2:51Speaker 3: you're just really pressing late in the game. Here and
- 2:54Speaker 3: nowadays talk about you know, the team having a lot
- 2:57Speaker 3: of fight. You love seeing them scoring runs lane games,
- 3:00Speaker 3: but you want to see him adding on runs at
- 3:02Speaker 3: the end to give him more of a lead as
- 3:04Speaker 3: opposed to having to come from behind every single time,
- 3:06Speaker 3: which has been the case here for at least the
- 3:08Speaker 3: last couple of weeks and if not the whole season.
- 3:10Speaker 3: So you love seeing the fight from the team, but
- 3:12Speaker 3: it would just be great to see them get a
- 3:15Speaker 3: lead and let this bullpen go to work, because I
- 3:17Speaker 3: really think it's gonna be one of their biggest strengths
- 3:19Speaker 3: they have on this entire team.
- 3:22Speaker 1: So those fans are asking what's it going to take
- 3:25Speaker 1: for this offense, And I think if the Oriols knew that,
- 3:28Speaker 1: they would have fixed it by now. So that's the
- 3:31Speaker 1: curse of it. Here thirteen guys on the IL. Yes,
- 3:34Speaker 1: they're banged up. I mean they're batting Johnathan Rodriguez fourth today.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I mean I questioned that a little bit because even
- 3:41Speaker 1: in this short time in the big leagues, he doesn't
- 3:43Speaker 1: have great stats against lefties. I mean, Western Wilson started today,
- 3:46Speaker 1: and he does have good stats career wise against leftianded
- 3:49Speaker 1: pitching in the major leagues eight forty seven ops. But
- 3:54Speaker 1: right now, I'm sure from the clubhouse to the dugout
- 3:58Speaker 1: to the front office, they're searching for answers as to
- 4:00Speaker 1: why this offense is underperforming.
- 4:05Speaker 3: And I think it's also too when you look at
- 4:06Speaker 3: the lineup the way it's set up. I mean, how
- 4:08Speaker 3: many games in a row have they had where they're hitting
- 4:10Speaker 3: the same guys after, you know, after ward, after Henderson
- 4:14Speaker 3: and after Alonso. I mean, it's been a different guy
- 4:16Speaker 3: behind them almost every game, it seems like. So I
- 4:19Speaker 3: think you're right, Saf, I think they're looking for answers,
- 4:21Speaker 3: trying to just find a formula to get this offense
- 4:24Speaker 3: up and rolling, and then it ends up seeing like
- 4:26Speaker 3: the seven, eight, nine hitters are kind of carrying the
- 4:28Speaker 3: offense at times, and then we can't get the guys
- 4:30Speaker 3: in the top of lineup. It just kind of seems
- 4:33Speaker 3: like everything just isn't clicking on full cylinder right now,
- 4:36Speaker 3: and they're trying everything they can to see what they
- 4:39Speaker 3: can do to kind of get it rolling.
- 4:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:41Speaker 5: I think that's just been the unfortunate part to the
- 4:44Speaker 5: start of this year with the orioles Is guys.
- 4:47Speaker 2: They've just been an inconsistent ball club.
- 4:49Speaker 5: You start out the year three and six, then you
- 4:51Speaker 5: win six of seven, and now you've lost five of
- 4:54Speaker 5: six again. We've seen the offense hot, we've seen them cold.
- 4:57Speaker 5: We've seen the starting pitching maybe to a or extent.
- 5:00Speaker 5: The bullpen for the most part, has been the most
- 5:02Speaker 5: consistent part about this team. And we know that the
- 5:05Speaker 5: defense has been spotty throughout, but offensively in Cleveland, it
- 5:10Speaker 5: just it wasn't good enough one to fifty seven batting average.
- 5:14Speaker 2: They had forty eight.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Strikeouts in four games, five for twenty six with runners
- 5:20Speaker 5: in scoring position, and right now, and.
- 5:23Speaker 2: You don't expect all these guys to be hot at.
- 5:25Speaker 5: The same time, And Brad, I remember you saying in
- 5:27Speaker 5: one of the prior episodes, you probably don't want all
- 5:29Speaker 5: of them to be hot at the same time. But
- 5:32Speaker 5: right now it's it's kind of Jeremiah Jackson, Taylor Ward.
- 5:35Speaker 5: He hit his first homer of the season today, but
- 5:38Speaker 5: Gunner and Pete and really team wide, strikeouts have been
- 5:42Speaker 5: an issue.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yeah, And where I really see it creeping up is
- 5:46Speaker 3: when they have runners in scoring position and they're just
- 5:48Speaker 3: even with less than two outs, they're having trouble moving
- 5:51Speaker 3: runners over, hitting a ball to the right side, putting
- 5:54Speaker 3: the ball and play up the middle when you have
- 5:55Speaker 3: a runner on third lesson two outs. So the strikeout
- 5:58Speaker 3: has really just seemed to be coming at the worst time.
- 6:01Speaker 3: It seems like when they have runners in the scoring
- 6:02Speaker 3: position lest to outs, and that's when the strikeouts kill you.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And that's when it seems to be coming up the most.
- 6:08Speaker 3: And from what I've seen in these games, so far.
- 6:12Speaker 1: It's interesting. We did not see a six to one
- 6:15Speaker 1: run coming for the Oriols when they got swept in Pittsburgh,
- 6:18Speaker 1: but it did. We didn't quite see this coming, but
- 6:21Speaker 1: it did. It's just baseball, man, you can't call it.
- 6:26Speaker 1: You know, who thought like Leote Tavaris and Jeremiah Jackson
- 6:29Speaker 1: would be the best hitters on this team twenty games
- 6:32Speaker 1: into the season. That's about what we've seen. And Tim,
- 6:35Speaker 1: I think they're in a critical stretch though I wrote
- 6:37Speaker 1: this on my substack. They're playing better opponents here the
- 6:41Speaker 1: next couple of weeks. They're going to see Alise finally soon,
- 6:45Speaker 1: the Red Sox followed by the Yankees. They need to
- 6:48Speaker 1: stay engaged with the division. They've drifted two or three back.
- 6:52Speaker 1: You don't want to fall five or six, seven back,
- 6:55Speaker 1: have one of those three and seven runs where now
- 6:58Speaker 1: you're playing catchup.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Completely agree, Steve, And you know by the time this
- 7:03Speaker 5: Royal series is done, you're twenty five games in. They
- 7:06Speaker 5: haven't played an American League East opponent yet, and like
- 7:09Speaker 5: you said, that really ratchets up. Boston comes to town
- 7:12Speaker 5: next weekend. You play two series against the Yankees in
- 7:16Speaker 5: the span of two weeks. So the schedule really starts
- 7:19Speaker 5: to ratchet up. And I think Taylor Ward said it
- 7:23Speaker 5: best following the game today, Brad, where they know how
- 7:26Speaker 5: good they are. There's a lot of talent on this team,
- 7:29Speaker 5: and this is a time to really look in the
- 7:31Speaker 5: mirror and dig deep, to use his words, and get
- 7:34Speaker 5: back on track. The injuries are absolutely a factor. There's
- 7:38Speaker 5: no question about thirteen guys on the il, a lot
- 7:42Speaker 5: of key contributors. But even with all of those injuries,
- 7:46Speaker 5: you gotta find a way. No what's gonna feel sorry
- 7:48Speaker 5: for you for these guys being sidelined.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think it's funny you say that because
- 7:54Speaker 3: I watch this team play and I don't see a
- 7:56Speaker 3: five hundred or blow five hundred team. There's just too
- 7:59Speaker 3: much talent on this roster for them to be where
- 8:01Speaker 3: they are right now in the standings. But on the
- 8:03Speaker 3: other side the American League, nobody's taken off. Everyone's kind
- 8:07Speaker 3: of still there. But like you're saying, this stretch coming
- 8:09Speaker 3: up is going to be really important to not get five, six, seven,
- 8:11Speaker 3: eight games behind in the division. Then you get away
- 8:14Speaker 3: behind me a wildcard game if you start losing to
- 8:16Speaker 3: some of these opponents.
- 8:17Speaker 4: So the good, the good, and the bad.
- 8:18Speaker 3: I guess of all of it is, I don't think
- 8:20Speaker 3: we've seen the best baseball they can play, and the
- 8:22Speaker 3: league hasn't gone away from them at all. So that's
- 8:25Speaker 3: that's at least a positive I can take from. We
- 8:27Speaker 3: know it's there the roster. The talent is too good
- 8:31Speaker 3: to not be better than what they are.
- 8:34Speaker 5: And that's exactly it, Brad, where I refuse to believe
- 8:38Speaker 5: that this offense is going to be in this long
- 8:40Speaker 5: of a prolonged funk for them, this being a season
- 8:44Speaker 5: long issue. There's just way too much power in this
- 8:46Speaker 5: lineup for the slugging percentage to be at the middle
- 8:49Speaker 5: of the pack.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And I still have faith in this starting pitching.
- 8:54Speaker 5: I still think we're going to see the best is
- 8:56Speaker 5: yet to come for Shamee Baz, for Kyle Bradish.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I think Rogers will get back on track.
- 9:02Speaker 5: And heck, the bullpen continues to be such a pleasant
- 9:05Speaker 5: surprise for this team.
- 9:07Speaker 2: There's a lot of areas for growth for this ball club.
- 9:12Speaker 1: They're sure. And let's get back to him to what
- 9:14Speaker 1: you mentioned earlier, the early game struggles and going into today,
- 9:18Speaker 1: the Oriols had been outscored in the first two innings
- 9:21Speaker 1: twenty four to nine. They've actually outscored their opponents in
- 9:24Speaker 1: the third inning by little, and that didn't change today.
- 9:27Speaker 1: In the first two innings, no one scored, so twenty
- 9:29Speaker 1: four to nine. Nine runs all year in the first
- 9:32Speaker 1: two innings now twenty two games. So in the first
- 9:35Speaker 1: inning the Oils are batting one to seventy six OPS six',
- 9:38Speaker 1: ten and the second inning they're batting two hundred six oh.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Six in the third inning THE ops is five sixty.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Two so it's really way down across the board. Now
- 9:49Speaker 1: traditionally in, baseball starters do better the first time through the,
- 9:52Speaker 1: lineup and you start to hit them as the game goes.
- 9:54Speaker 1: On but this is an extreme case of, that AND
- 9:58Speaker 1: i just can't imagine this will continue much. Longer but for,
- 10:02Speaker 1: now it's got to be really frustrating throughout the team
- 10:05Speaker 1: and the fan.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Base, absolutely And steve this time a year, ago how
- 10:10Speaker 5: big of an issue was that for this ball club
- 10:13Speaker 5: they would just be buried in the first couple of.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Innings you're down four to, nothing five to, nothing the
- 10:18Speaker 5: starter's getting, sheld AND i feel like it's only human
- 10:22Speaker 5: nature at that. Point now it is nowhere near the
- 10:24Speaker 5: extreme that it was for twenty twenty, five but still
- 10:29Speaker 5: you're just kind of this ball club is constantly, chasing
- 10:33Speaker 5: AND i feel like that has to take a lot
- 10:36Speaker 5: out of this team where they just need to put
- 10:40Speaker 5: up a crooked number in the first couple of, innings
- 10:42Speaker 5: play from, ahead and then brad get it to that
- 10:44Speaker 5: bullpen because you got a lot of guys.
- 10:47Speaker 2: That can come through in big, time high leverage, Spots.
- 10:50Speaker 3: AND i just think, that LIKE i had mentioned, before
- 10:53Speaker 3: it's kind of just the pressure just, building and the
- 10:55Speaker 3: longer this, goes you, know the guys are thinking about.
- 10:58Speaker 3: It it gets to a certain point in the season
- 11:00Speaker 3: where it's just, noise but then it turns into a
- 11:04Speaker 3: reality type, thing AND i think that's when you can
- 11:07Speaker 3: kind of see the bats get away from them and
- 11:08Speaker 3: then trying to do a little bit too much and
- 11:10Speaker 3: guys want to really help the. Team so that's when
- 11:12Speaker 3: you see some of these at bats you would normally
- 11:15Speaker 3: never see from these, guys but they're just putting so
- 11:17Speaker 3: much pressure on themselves to get that lead and get
- 11:19Speaker 3: to this.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Bullpen BECAUSE i feel.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Like we haven't seen a stretch where we get to
- 11:23Speaker 3: see the bullpen in action, three, four, five six straight
- 11:25Speaker 3: games with the lead and kind of just shut it
- 11:27Speaker 3: down and send a message to the rest of the
- 11:29Speaker 3: league that you need to get ahead of us or
- 11:30Speaker 3: else the game's. Over and that's how it always felt
- 11:32Speaker 3: on the TEAMS i played for In. Baltimore you could
- 11:35Speaker 3: feel the pressure the other team had to get a
- 11:37Speaker 3: lead early against our, starters because if it got to
- 11:40Speaker 3: us late in the, game we pretty much thought we
- 11:41Speaker 3: were gonna. Win so it can play both sides of
- 11:45Speaker 3: the ball. There when you get, behind you start feeling this.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Pressure but when they start getting these, leads they know
- 11:49Speaker 3: they can just start applying pressure to the other.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Team so that's WHAT i really want to see for this.
- 11:53Speaker 5: Offense and to your, point where this you wouldn't expect
- 11:58Speaker 5: to be a season long thing the first three innings
- 12:01Speaker 5: because it flips an inning seven through, eight or excuse,
- 12:04Speaker 5: me seven through.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Nine they're tied for the eighth most runs in, baseball.
- 12:07Speaker 5: The fifth best ops in, baseball and those final three,
- 12:12Speaker 5: innings so you would expect this to balance out over.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Time.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Brad would you think there's a lot of uh discussion
- 12:21Speaker 1: internally amongst the players about the offensive struggles or do
- 12:26Speaker 1: guys maybe just they kind of know. It they know
- 12:28Speaker 1: it more than, anybody, Right it's not like someone has
- 12:31Speaker 1: to tell, them and they and, they As Buck showalter would,
- 12:34Speaker 1: say there's all that, one, Two but then sometimes that
- 12:37Speaker 1: gets in the. Way you want to be, good you
- 12:39Speaker 1: want to do it for the, team you want to
- 12:40Speaker 1: be the one, guy and then no one turns out
- 12:43Speaker 1: being the one.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Guy, yeah AND i think it's not it's not one
- 12:46Speaker 3: of those. THINGS i think it's being told to, them
- 12:48Speaker 3: but they. KNOW i, mean it's LIKE i, said if
- 12:50Speaker 3: it was a nine game stretch or something like, that
- 12:52Speaker 3: but when it started creeping towards twenty, games and it's
- 12:55Speaker 3: it's pretty much the same kind of. Pattern they know,
- 12:58Speaker 3: it and they're they're probably discussing with each. Other they're
- 13:00Speaker 3: trying to figure out like how to get guys, over
- 13:02Speaker 3: how to do, this how to do. That but like you,
- 13:04Speaker 3: said it's the want to and then getting it, done
- 13:07Speaker 3: and they're two totally different.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Things and these guys know how to do.
- 13:10Speaker 3: It it just got. It they just have to start
- 13:11Speaker 3: doing it and they. Will it's just got. It you
- 13:15Speaker 3: just want to see it getting out there a little
- 13:17Speaker 3: bit quicker here and get off through a little bit
- 13:19Speaker 3: better starts in these.
- 13:19Speaker 4: GAMES i think.
- 13:21Speaker 5: We've started to see a little bit of frustration from some. Guys,
- 13:25Speaker 5: Heck Samuel, BISIO i think he snapped at least five
- 13:28Speaker 5: bats over me.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Within the past.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Week you, Know Gunnar, henderson we see the. Emotions he
- 13:34Speaker 5: wears his emotions on his. Sleeve SO i think guys
- 13:38Speaker 5: they might.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Be pressing a. Bit But brad, like how. Important and
- 13:42Speaker 2: that's the special thing.
- 13:43Speaker 5: About baseball is you have a game the very next,
- 13:45Speaker 5: day but just staying within, yourself not trying to do
- 13:49Speaker 5: too much despite knowing that you're going through this tough.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Stretch, YEAH i think that's the hardest struggle in baseball.
- 13:55Speaker 3: PERIOD i think it's knowing what you do well and
- 13:58Speaker 3: doing it at the best of your. Bill and that's
- 14:00Speaker 3: LIKE i, remember whenever you get called up in the minor,
- 14:02Speaker 3: leagues whatever got you, there we'll keep you. There you
- 14:05Speaker 3: need to get better at, it but whatever gets you
- 14:07Speaker 3: to that spot and. Whatever all these guys are in
- 14:09Speaker 3: a position that they know what they do. Best when
- 14:12Speaker 3: you try to start doing other stuff outside of, that
- 14:14Speaker 3: that's when baseball gets really. Hard it's a hard enough
- 14:17Speaker 3: game for hitters as it, is but when you start
- 14:19Speaker 3: trying to do stuff that's outside of your game and skill,
- 14:21Speaker 3: set that's when the game just gets.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Impossible and, it's LIKE i.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Said it might be creeping in there just a little,
- 14:27Speaker 3: bit and like you, said everybody wants to be the
- 14:29Speaker 3: one that jump starts. It and when you have nine
- 14:31Speaker 3: guys trying to do, that sometimes they get outside of
- 14:33Speaker 3: their game and their skill set and things just kind
- 14:36Speaker 3: of just start falling down the wayside in a bad,
- 14:38Speaker 3: direction just as much it can go in the good
- 14:41Speaker 3: direction when things start rolling the other. Way so it's
- 14:44Speaker 3: just such a frustrating, game and that's why there's one
- 14:46Speaker 3: hundred and sixty. Two and you try to just go
- 14:48Speaker 3: game to game and keep your mental state as solid
- 14:52Speaker 3: and stable as you possibly, can because.
- 14:54Speaker 4: It is a tough.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Game and you go through good stretches and you go
- 14:56Speaker 3: through bad, stretches and at the end of the, year
- 14:58Speaker 3: you just hope your team's there in a position to
- 15:00Speaker 3: have a chance to make the.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Playoffs so The oriols lose three or four At Progressive,
- 15:05Speaker 1: field where they have gone thirty nine and eighty all,
- 15:10Speaker 1: time that's stunningly. Poor that's a three to twenty eight winning,
- 15:13Speaker 1: percentage which would be fifty three wins over a full.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Year that's how poorly The oriols have played At. Cleveland
- 15:18Speaker 1: this team is not, different unfortunately than a lot of
- 15:21Speaker 1: others who have just gone in there and, struggled and
- 15:24Speaker 1: it feels like every year they played great. Defense when
- 15:27Speaker 1: The oriols show up, there they're pitching is good and
- 15:29Speaker 1: they know how to, execute so if they see a,
- 15:31Speaker 1: weakness they pounce mad like a shark and they get it.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Done now let's talk about oriole Starter Trevor, rodgers and
- 15:39Speaker 1: my concern level is. Zero i've seen him give up
- 15:42Speaker 1: some runs back to, back But i've seen too much
- 15:44Speaker 1: with this guy with The orioles to be worried. Yet
- 15:47Speaker 1: now maybe you guys have a different, Take but he
- 15:49Speaker 1: had a one eight to NINE era after three. Starts
- 15:52Speaker 1: now he's allowed niner and runs in nine and two
- 15:54Speaker 1: thirds the last. Two last year he gave up more
- 15:57Speaker 1: than three runs one time at eighteen starts one. Time
- 16:01Speaker 1: now he's done it back to. Back so some doubters
- 16:04Speaker 1: are going to creep in, here maybe amongst the fan.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Base how about, you two.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Gentlemen i'm not at that, Point.
- 16:11Speaker 5: STEVE i think you can get go back to his
- 16:14Speaker 5: last start against The.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Diamondbacks he was cruising up until the fifth.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Inning he had a bad, inning he would, say as
- 16:20Speaker 5: much as his only walk was in that. Inning he
- 16:22Speaker 5: gave up four hits are a lot of hard. Contact
- 16:26Speaker 5: today was a rough. Start there's no way around. It
- 16:29Speaker 5: BUT i think this is kind of the moment That
- 16:32Speaker 5: i've been waiting for to see out Of Trevor. Rodgers
- 16:34Speaker 5: quite frankly is it was such a magic carpet ride
- 16:38Speaker 5: for him in twenty twenty. Five that is so, abnormal
- 16:42Speaker 5: and baseball guys have bad. Starts hall Of fame pitchers
- 16:45Speaker 5: have bad. Starts guys that Win Cy young's have bad
- 16:48Speaker 5: starts over the course of. Seasons and he pitched in
- 16:52Speaker 5: more than half of a. Season but now it's back
- 16:55Speaker 5: to back outings Where i'm sure he would have won
- 16:57Speaker 5: it back and does this? Snowball does he right the
- 17:00Speaker 5: ship in his next start expected Against, boston who's a struggling.
- 17:05Speaker 5: Offense i'm still in On Trevor, rodgers AND i thought
- 17:09Speaker 5: them McDonald had a great point on the.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Broadcast today On masson Where.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Rogers through the first four, INNINGS i believe he gave
- 17:19Speaker 5: up four earned, runs but he was getting ahead Of Guys.
- 17:21Speaker 5: Brett he had first pitch strikes on seventeen of the
- 17:26Speaker 5: first nineteen batters that he. Faced But ben made the
- 17:30Speaker 5: point of, saying there's a difference between control and, Command
- 17:34Speaker 5: and you, know control it's getting it in the strike,
- 17:38Speaker 5: zone but, command it's hitting your, spots it's getting it
- 17:41Speaker 5: in different. Quadrants SO i guess the difference between a
- 17:45Speaker 5: strike and a quality.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Strike, Yeah AND i thought that was great the way
- 17:50Speaker 3: he talked about it, today just explained it so well
- 17:52Speaker 3: and gave it such a good visual without even having.
- 17:54Speaker 4: An actually seat on the.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Screen and it's the difference between a good start and
- 17:59Speaker 3: a bad star equality strikes as opposed to just throwing.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Strikes like you, said he got, ahead which is gonna help.
- 18:04Speaker 3: You but from there he was just he was throwing
- 18:07Speaker 3: it was almost half of the plate or halfs of
- 18:10Speaker 3: these quadrants as opposed to throwing it to a third
- 18:12Speaker 3: of the plate and a third up.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Above so he was just getting too much on the
- 18:17Speaker 4: fat part of the. Plate and it.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Happens AND i, think going back To stee's, Point i'm
- 18:22Speaker 3: not worried Because i've heard starting pitchers talk about you
- 18:26Speaker 3: get Thirty let's just say you get thirty starts in the,
- 18:28Speaker 3: season you have five starts where no matter what you,
- 18:30Speaker 3: throw you're never gonna get.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Hit it's gonna be. Unbelievable you have.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Five starts that are really bad and no matter what you,
- 18:35Speaker 3: throw it's gonna get. Hit and your season is made
- 18:38Speaker 3: up of the other twenty starts that you make during the.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Year SO i WAS i always looked at starting pitching that,
- 18:42Speaker 3: way that it's A it's just a great way to
- 18:44Speaker 3: look at, it AND.
- 18:44Speaker 4: I think it's a great way for them to look at.
- 18:46Speaker 3: It And i'd say these last, two maybe the last
- 18:48Speaker 3: one might be somewhere in the, middle but today was
- 18:50Speaker 3: probably one of his five bad, starts and it's gonna,
- 18:53Speaker 3: happen and no matter how good you, are you're gonna
- 18:55Speaker 3: have these bad. Starts but back To ben's point, AGAIN i.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Think he was just throwing a little bit too much
- 19:01Speaker 4: of the fat part of the.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Play he was getting, ahead which was, great but then
- 19:04Speaker 3: the pitches after, that his change up was up just
- 19:06Speaker 3: a little bit too. Much like on the home run To,
- 19:08Speaker 3: ramirez the fastball was just instead of getting it fully,
- 19:11Speaker 3: in it was probably more middle of the, plate and
- 19:15Speaker 3: a good hitter Like jose ramiir is gonna make you
- 19:17Speaker 3: pay for. That so that's that's pretty much all it was.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Today it was just he was throwing. Strikes it was
- 19:21Speaker 3: great seeing him get, ahead but after, that his pitches
- 19:24Speaker 3: weren't exactly quality, strikes and he probably the first one to,
- 19:27Speaker 3: say he's just got to be a little bit. Better
- 19:29Speaker 3: you got to be a little bit more towards a.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Black the hitters are too good to keep it out
- 19:32Speaker 3: over the, plate and The indian or, sorry The guardians
- 19:35Speaker 3: are such a good team at just putting the ball
- 19:38Speaker 3: and play that you can't depend on the. Strikeouts so
- 19:41Speaker 3: even when he was getting ahead to two strikes against
- 19:44Speaker 3: the lineup like, this it is not necessarily gonna help
- 19:46Speaker 3: you because they're so good at just putting the ball and,
- 19:48Speaker 3: play they're good at moving runners, over and they're gonna
- 19:50Speaker 3: make you pay if you make bad. Pitches so that
- 19:52Speaker 3: was pretty much WHAT i saw from him. Today BUT
- 19:54Speaker 3: i don't see this stretch here, continuing and expect to
- 19:57Speaker 3: see him come out the next outing and get back
- 19:59Speaker 3: to doing what he.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Does four point zero eighty R a on the air
- 20:03Speaker 1: now For Trevor rodgers a quick. Question On saturday night's,
- 20:08Speaker 1: Game Dean kramer gives up this three run. Jack some
- 20:12Speaker 1: people said he should have thrown a split split was so,
- 20:14Speaker 1: Good besias wanting him to step off at the last.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Second he doesn't step. Off what did you guys make
- 20:23Speaker 1: of that? Sequence he pitched so, well but one pitch
- 20:27Speaker 1: there really cost.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Him, yeah and IT'S i think it's, UH i used
- 20:31Speaker 3: to just not be able to get sleep at night
- 20:34Speaker 3: thinking THAT i threw the wrong. Pitch so he probably
- 20:37Speaker 3: was tossing and turn over that and then probably.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Was a little bit in between on what he wanted to.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Do or he was, really, uh you, know really wanted
- 20:45Speaker 3: to throw that, pitch And basile just saw maybe something
- 20:47Speaker 3: in the, hitter AND i don't, know it's. HARD i
- 20:50Speaker 3: hate questioning one, pitch but that pitched the side of the.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Game so it's it's, like it's such a it's such
- 20:56Speaker 3: a as a former, player AND i know what he would
- 20:58Speaker 3: go through with these situations Because i'm out there for
- 21:00Speaker 3: the save AND i throw one pitch THAT i just
- 21:02Speaker 3: WISH i had thrown for a ball instead of a,
- 21:04Speaker 3: strike and just kind of getting beat on that one
- 21:07Speaker 3: pitch is just those are like the worst outings you can,
- 21:10Speaker 3: have especially as a. Starter he was deep in the
- 21:12Speaker 3: game there in the SIXTH i think it, was and
- 21:14Speaker 3: just just one pitch that you wish you could either
- 21:16Speaker 3: take back or put in a different, location and unfortunately
- 21:20Speaker 3: he just got burned on.
- 21:20Speaker 2: It Ran how tough is? That though you know where
- 21:25Speaker 2: you don't want to be.
- 21:27Speaker 5: Too predictable going to the well too often for the,
- 21:30Speaker 5: spoilter like sequencing your, pitches like it's almost like the
- 21:34Speaker 5: game within a game for a, Pitcher, like how difficult is?
- 21:38Speaker 4: That it's so.
- 21:40Speaker 3: TOUGH i remember Facing Guardo eyes on the diebacks for
- 21:45Speaker 3: a bunch of, years BUT i KNEW i could check
- 21:47Speaker 3: him out in my change, up AND i catcher came
- 21:50Speaker 3: out and goes throw a change up. HERE i, SAID
- 21:51Speaker 3: i want to throw a cutter away and Then i'm
- 21:53Speaker 3: going to go to my change. UP i just want
- 21:54Speaker 3: to throw one pitch away just to get him off
- 21:56Speaker 3: with the change up because he KNEW i was going
- 21:58Speaker 3: to throw, it and what, happens he has a home
- 22:00Speaker 3: on the. Cutter so it was just one of these
- 22:03Speaker 3: things where you want a, sequence like you, said you
- 22:06Speaker 3: want to get to the pitch to get to the,
- 22:07Speaker 3: strikeout but then you throw it too good of a
- 22:10Speaker 3: pitch and they hurt you on the pitch you weren't
- 22:11Speaker 3: trying to get beat. On and it is such a
- 22:14Speaker 3: it's such a frustrating thing BECAUSE i KNOW i could
- 22:17Speaker 3: get him out of my change. UP i just wanted
- 22:18Speaker 3: to throw one more pitch away to see IF i
- 22:20Speaker 3: could get him to either just get off balance going
- 22:23Speaker 3: out towards the plate or just take a check swing
- 22:26Speaker 3: and MAYBE i get a swing and miss. There but
- 22:28Speaker 3: it's just stuff that would just beat you. Up And
- 22:30Speaker 3: i'm SURE i don't know If dean was, trying LIKE i,
- 22:33Speaker 3: said he's the only one that knows if he was
- 22:34Speaker 3: trying to get him out of that pitch or if
- 22:36Speaker 3: he was trying to set up the splitter after. That
- 22:38Speaker 3: maybe he thought he had thrown too many to. Him
- 22:39Speaker 3: maybe he thought he was sitting on the, splitter which
- 22:42Speaker 3: is a tough pitch to sit, on but thought he
- 22:44Speaker 3: could maybe get one by. Him and it's just it's
- 22:47Speaker 3: just such a frustrating part of the pitching, side, because
- 22:49Speaker 3: like you, said you're setting up these pitches and all
- 22:51Speaker 3: you're trying to do is maybe throw a, Ball just
- 22:53Speaker 3: throw on above the, zone get him to just change
- 22:55Speaker 3: his eye level one way or the. Other and you
- 22:58Speaker 3: throw too much on the, plate he makes you pay for.
- 22:59Speaker 3: It it's just the give and take of it. All
- 23:02Speaker 3: AND i mean seven out of ten, times the guy's
- 23:05Speaker 3: probably gonna mishit it anyway when you put it in
- 23:07Speaker 3: The spoty's looking. For so it's when you get beat on,
- 23:09Speaker 3: it especially on the home, run it just makes it
- 23:12Speaker 3: that much more.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Frustrating and it's a team.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Game so in fairness To Dean, kramer if they scored
- 23:18Speaker 1: him six or eight, runs one pitch does not have
- 23:21Speaker 1: the significance that we talked. About when we come back
- 23:24Speaker 1: On Berdland. Territory we got a few more topics to visit,
- 23:27Speaker 1: Today so hang in.
- 23:28Speaker 6: There Big Bad Morning, Show finnie And Hany Inside Access
- 23:34Speaker 6: live on YouTube weekdays six till, six Search baltimore ONE

- 23:44Speaker 6: o five Seven.
- 23:45Speaker 1: The, fan, GUYS i think it's fair to throw some
- 23:50Speaker 1: props leote to veris this. Way this guy age twenty
- 23:54Speaker 1: seven signed for one Year Defensive, specialists, right but he's
- 23:58Speaker 1: batting three sixty eight with ans of a thousand hit
- 24:01Speaker 1: his first home Run saturday. Night feels like he's really
- 24:04Speaker 1: been what they wanted. More he didn't start today as
- 24:07Speaker 1: a little surprising to, me but he's been swinging it
- 24:09Speaker 1: for The. Orioles we didn't expect.
- 24:11Speaker 4: That, yeah his swing looks great right. NOW i think
- 24:15Speaker 4: everything it.
- 24:16Speaker 3: SOUNDED i don't know if the acoustics are better In,
- 24:18Speaker 3: cleveland but every single ball these guys are making contact with.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Hard him And jackson.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Both were just really loud on the. Telecast But tavars
- 24:25Speaker 3: has been really. IMPRESSIVE i, mean you know what he's
- 24:27Speaker 3: gonna do in center, field but what he's been providing
- 24:29Speaker 3: for the bat the last ten, week ten days to
- 24:32Speaker 3: two weeks even more than, that has been really. Impressive
- 24:35Speaker 3: and like you're, saying The orioles are getting everything and
- 24:38Speaker 3: more they expected from. Him and it's been been really
- 24:40Speaker 3: fun to. Watch AND i love seeing him up there that.
- 24:43Speaker 3: PLAYED i want to see him up there with more
- 24:44Speaker 3: base runners to.
- 24:46Speaker 4: See what he can.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Do but it's been great seeing him so far this
- 24:49Speaker 3: season and interested to see how long he can keep this.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Going that's the funny thing about this, year, guys Is
- 24:56Speaker 5: there's been so many cool stories Like Leode, tavaris Like Jeremiah,
- 25:01Speaker 5: Jackson Anthony, nunez like all all these guys in the.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Bullpen like there's.
- 25:05Speaker 5: Been a lot of these guys that we weren't expecting
- 25:08Speaker 5: to step up that. Have And Leote, TAVARES i believe
- 25:12Speaker 5: was the first signing of the offseason two million dollar,
- 25:15Speaker 5: contract and he's really sees the starting center field, job,
- 25:19Speaker 5: guys and the fact that he is swinging this hot.
- 25:22Speaker 5: Bat he had a seven game hit streak heading into.
- 25:25Speaker 5: Today think of what he did in the in this series, alone.
- 25:29Speaker 5: Guys he broke up the no Hitter, thursday he worked
- 25:32Speaker 5: a walk in the eighth Inning friday in a situation
- 25:36Speaker 5: in which he challenged a full count situation where he
- 25:39Speaker 5: struck out and then it ended up being reversed to
- 25:42Speaker 5: a walk and he homerd. Yesterday maybe the most surprising
- 25:46Speaker 5: thing About Leodi taveres so far this year is the.
- 25:50Speaker 5: Walks he's got nine walks in nine strikeouts heading heading into.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Today he had five walks in fifty eight games last.
- 25:58Speaker 5: Year So Tody tavares has been quite frankly a godsend
- 26:03Speaker 5: for this.
- 26:04Speaker 4: Team, yeah when you look at the.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Walks to, me that just Goes he's got really good
- 26:08Speaker 3: plain discipline right. Now he knows where the zone is
- 26:10Speaker 3: and that's where good hitting comes. From it's just knowing
- 26:13Speaker 3: balls and knowing strikes and taking his walks when it's
- 26:15Speaker 3: time and not trying.
- 26:17Speaker 4: To do too. Much and he's just been a really
- 26:19Speaker 4: bright spot for this.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Lineup and like What i'm, saying It's, tim like you're,
- 26:22Speaker 3: saying with all these bright spots and these guys you're
- 26:24Speaker 3: not expecting to do the. Stuff it's just, like, MAN
- 26:27Speaker 3: i just there's more wins, there and it's THAT i
- 26:30Speaker 3: think THAT i think that might be the most frustrating
- 26:32Speaker 3: part of, it is that you're getting these contributions from
- 26:35Speaker 3: guys that you did not, expect and yet here they
- 26:38Speaker 3: are a gamer two under five, hundred and it just
- 26:40Speaker 3: feels like they're playing better baseball than what they're showing
- 26:42Speaker 3: right now record.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Wise, yeah at great point, There, tim about all the
- 26:48Speaker 1: surprising contributors and maybe that's why they are holding their
- 26:51Speaker 1: head in there with thirteen il guys With if you
- 26:54Speaker 1: look at components of a team, offense, defense, rotation, bullpen
- 26:59Speaker 1: four components add heavily into winning there's only one going
- 27:03Speaker 1: well for The orioles right. Now that's. Bullpen the other
- 27:06Speaker 1: three are underperforming what we hoped in some ways big time.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Underperforming so maybe Here's steve being the. Optimist ten and
- 27:13Speaker 1: twelve isn't so, bad but they have to not go
- 27:17Speaker 1: six games. Under they have to now start getting it.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Going and In Kansas, city maybe that Means, Bradish boz
- 27:24Speaker 1: And bassett roll and get it. Done Maybe balonzo hits
- 27:27Speaker 1: four home. Runs who knows something has to turn and
- 27:31Speaker 1: it can turn, fast and it's time In birdland for
- 27:33Speaker 1: that to.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Happen, WELL i think you're exactly.
- 27:36Speaker 5: Right you got it at a minimum in this, stretch
- 27:39Speaker 5: continued to tread. Water now it sounds like there could
- 27:43Speaker 5: be reinforcements on the. WAY i Know Keegan aiken he
- 27:46Speaker 5: had his second rehab assignment or rehab appearance. Yesterday Andrew
- 27:51Speaker 5: kittridge got restarted after a paternity to. LEAVE i know
- 27:55Speaker 5: he got roughed up. Today Dietrich ans he started his rehab.
- 27:58Speaker 5: Assignment so that's kind of gonna be an interesting decision
- 28:02Speaker 5: when those three guys are, Ready.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Who are you sending down in this bullpen right?
- 28:06Speaker 5: Now with guys pitching really, well and then in the
- 28:09Speaker 5: Lineup Adley, RUTCHMAN i know he's eligible to come off
- 28:13Speaker 5: the Il.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Tuesday we'll.
- 28:15Speaker 5: SEE i Know Craig albernaz was saying when he got
- 28:18Speaker 5: THE mri that it was encouraging. News tyler, O'Neill you,
- 28:22Speaker 5: know he might be on the come soon as. Well
- 28:25Speaker 5: so within this next week or, two the oh should
- 28:29Speaker 5: have a lot of reinforcements coming their.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Way, Brad, Yeah AND i think when you think back
- 28:34Speaker 3: to the, injuries you know you can't you can't use
- 28:36Speaker 3: the injury bug as a. Card but when you think
- 28:38Speaker 3: about this line or this series in, particular the two
- 28:40Speaker 3: lefty starters they face had some. Struggles they got to
- 28:43Speaker 3: the starter today in the fifth, Inning but you think About,
- 28:46Speaker 3: mountcastle you think About, adley you think about. O'Neil that's
- 28:51Speaker 3: three writings right there that you know we're in the
- 28:52Speaker 3: starting lineup when a lefty, starting and it's tough losing those.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Guys AND i think that's where the four five six
- 28:59Speaker 3: hitters have kind of been and all over the place
- 29:01Speaker 3: because they don't Have, adlee they don't Have tyler. O'Neill
- 29:04Speaker 3: and then you Know Mount castle can you could stick
- 29:07Speaker 3: him in there when they're facing, lefties and it's just
- 29:10Speaker 3: the lineup can GET i don't want to say fall,
- 29:13Speaker 3: Apart that's not What I'm i'm trying to, say but
- 29:14Speaker 3: it can it can get a little dicey there when
- 29:17Speaker 3: you start losing these middle of that middle of the old.
- 29:20Speaker 4: Hats, Well, steve.
- 29:22Speaker 5: You brought it, up AND i mean that's with all
- 29:23Speaker 5: due respect That Jonathan, rodriguez but him batting cleanup in
- 29:28Speaker 5: back to back games multiple, times that's indicative of where
- 29:32Speaker 5: this lineup is at health wise right.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Now AND i know there was a, situation what was.
- 29:36Speaker 5: It, THURSDAY i believe where they ended up pinch hitting for.
- 29:40Speaker 5: Him you, know how often do you see teams pinchhit
- 29:43Speaker 5: for your cleanup. Hitters but that's just the situation that
- 29:46Speaker 5: The orioles find themselves in right.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Now, yep long, Season, berdland and we are looking for
- 29:53Speaker 1: better things to get int the city and we'll be
- 29:55Speaker 1: back in a couple of days to talk more about.
- 29:57Speaker 1: It so thanks To brad And. Tim I'm Steve. Meluski
