- 0:00Speaker 1: If Wednesday is your true hump day, getting over the
- 0:03Speaker 1: hump and down the hill toward the weekend, I hope
- 0:06Speaker 1: it went well for you. For those of you for
- 0:08Speaker 1: who Wednesday is a Friday, good on you, Good for you,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Good for you, and enjoy those next few days off
- 0:15Speaker 1: after that. And for those of you maybe Wednesday's the
- 0:18Speaker 1: start of your week. If that's the case, hope it
- 0:21Speaker 1: goes well for.
- 0:22Speaker 2: You as well.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Good afternoon, Welcome to the program here on thirteen under
- 0:26Speaker 1: the Zone. My name is Craig Way. Glad to have
- 0:28Speaker 1: you with us, and.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Glad to have the producer back in the studio.
- 0:32Speaker 1: First time we've been back in the studio together since
- 0:36Speaker 1: I was since before I got violently ill over the weekend, and.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Especially on violently it violently well, the coughing was violent.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Put it that way. Cameron D. Parker is the producer.
- 0:49Speaker 1: The D on the per certificate stands for Dallas as
- 0:52Speaker 1: in a city in uproar. Still an uproar about that,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and it was so pain meaningful for my wife. Wanted
- 1:03Speaker 1: to watch Luka Doncic there at a Lakers news conference
- 1:06Speaker 1: yesterday talk about how he's excited about this, and I
- 1:09Speaker 1: know for a lot of Mavericks fans. Did you see
- 1:11Speaker 1: where the Mavericks have offered refunds on season tickets? I did, Yeah, Like,
- 1:15Speaker 1: if you're that upset about it, we'll refund your season tickets.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And there's people like you think, really really upset about
- 1:25Speaker 1: this deal. You know, so you and I haven't had
- 1:27Speaker 1: a chance really to talk that much about the actual
- 1:32Speaker 1: trade itself. And uh and in your first of all,
- 1:37Speaker 1: here's here's the question that everybody's asking. Did the Mavericks
- 1:39Speaker 1: get fleeced? Okay, all right, I don't think it's humn
- 1:44Speaker 1: the question anymore. Yeah, I started saying, I'm not going
- 1:46Speaker 1: to disagree with you on that. You know, they needed
- 1:52Speaker 1: a post president, needed a bigger presence inside and Anthony
- 1:54Speaker 1: Davis Gibson. Then, but when you got your your team,
- 2:00Speaker 1: I know they have Kyri Yarby, But when you got
- 2:02Speaker 1: your team by having kind of really the heart and
- 2:06Speaker 1: soul and some would say the calves of your of
- 2:10Speaker 1: your franchise that appeared on your doorstep at age nineteen,
- 2:16Speaker 1: and you built so much equity into him and heat
- 2:18Speaker 1: into you, and then you turn and send him packing.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Fans were going to be extremely upset about it. And
- 2:27Speaker 1: then the other ancillary parts of that deal don't necessarily
- 2:32Speaker 1: seem to favor the Mavericks as well.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Did Jerry Jones send Nico Harrison a fruit basket? Everybody
- 2:39Speaker 3: asked that question first GM in Texas.
- 2:41Speaker 1: If you've seen all the jifts that had, like Jerry
- 2:43Speaker 1: at a Mavericks quarter zip, stuff.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Like that, making these incredible it was incredible content.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I still trying to make sense of it.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Craig and I just keep coming back to the fact
- 2:56Speaker 3: that the Mavericks trade away a top three player. I
- 2:59Speaker 3: understand the condition, the concerns about his conditioning and being
- 3:03Speaker 3: overweight and the injuries, and not wanting to pay him
- 3:06Speaker 3: three hundred and forty eight million dollars. He's still a
- 3:08Speaker 3: top three player in the league. It's just inexcusable and
- 3:12Speaker 3: the worries, Yeah, we don't want to pay him that
- 3:14Speaker 3: he's twenty five years old.
- 3:15Speaker 2: He's twenty six years old.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Luka donca to a thirty years old is still going
- 3:19Speaker 3: to be a top five, top ten player. Now, maybe
- 3:22Speaker 3: Nico Harrison will be right. Maybe in five years to
- 3:26Speaker 3: the Lakers will be dealing with the same issues. In
- 3:28Speaker 3: first take, we'll be talking about you know, what does
- 3:30Speaker 3: Luca have to do? They get into shape and the
- 3:32Speaker 3: Lakers trade him all this stuff, But he's gone the
- 3:36Speaker 3: two Western Conference finals in the past three years. He's
- 3:38Speaker 3: gone to the NBA Finals a year ago. They had
- 3:40Speaker 3: a great roster this season. I know they had the
- 3:42Speaker 3: injuries with I think Lively and Kyrie and obviously Luca,
- 3:46Speaker 3: but still felt like they were going to contend for
- 3:50Speaker 3: the finals this season if all those guys were healthy,
- 3:53Speaker 3: and maybe they just aren't going to be healthy. Maybe
- 3:55Speaker 3: Mavericks know, Hey, this team, it's reached its ceiling to
- 4:00Speaker 3: the finals last season and we're completely outplayed by the
- 4:02Speaker 3: Boston Celtics who are right there, and the Caves are
- 4:05Speaker 3: back this season.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Maybe that's it.
- 4:07Speaker 3: And of course we're hearing all these murmurs that the
- 4:09Speaker 3: relationship was beyond fractured, and maybe it is. You know,
- 4:13Speaker 3: we don't know what it's like to be in that building, Craig.
- 4:15Speaker 3: You know, maybe it was just it was incomprehensible what
- 4:18Speaker 3: was happening with Luca and the organization and the teammates.
- 4:21Speaker 3: But still I keep coming to the fact, coming back
- 4:23Speaker 3: to the fact that one you traded away a top
- 4:25Speaker 3: three point in the league in two you only spoke
- 4:28Speaker 3: to one team.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You spoke to one team, that was it. Yeah, and
- 4:32Speaker 2: they found what they wanted out of the one deal.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I agree with that. I think they had just gotten
- 4:37Speaker 1: frustrated and just were just done with him having the injury. Now,
- 4:42Speaker 1: you know, I've joked. I said this again on the
- 4:43Speaker 1: Area yesterday. I joked about the fact that Luca with
- 4:46Speaker 1: the calf injuries. I said, it's because he has cankles.
- 4:48Speaker 1: You know, he has those calves that go right into
- 4:50Speaker 1: the ankles there. But even so, the conditioning thing was
- 4:54Speaker 1: something that were really becoming exasperated with as it also
- 4:59Speaker 1: related to off season diet and conditioning, and so that's
- 5:04Speaker 1: what they were, you know, apparently frustrated with that he
- 5:08Speaker 1: wasn't following the conditioning plan and training plan that they
- 5:14Speaker 1: had for him. So I think I think there was
- 5:17Speaker 1: a lot of But still, I mean, I'm sure, I'm
- 5:22Speaker 1: sure Nico Harrison thought we're going to get backlash from
- 5:25Speaker 1: fans on this, But did he count on it being
- 5:28Speaker 1: as prolific as it was?
- 5:31Speaker 2: Does it sound like it? Yeah? Does it sound like
- 5:35Speaker 2: I suppose not?
- 5:36Speaker 1: And at the same time, you feel bad for an
- 5:39Speaker 1: Anthony Davis he's just showing up to work. You know,
- 5:42Speaker 1: he's he was surprised by it as well, So you
- 5:47Speaker 1: know what, you know, what are they going to get
- 5:49Speaker 1: out of this going forward? Was also what twenty twenty
- 5:51Speaker 1: nine first round pick out of the deal.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Didn't even get the twenty thirty one first round pick,
- 5:55Speaker 3: just one first round pick.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Anyway, it's that's you know, that's unfortunate there, But we'll
- 6:04Speaker 1: continue to watch it and see I go. As they
- 6:05Speaker 1: lost by two last night, Davis was not available for that,
- 6:09Speaker 1: but he could be available for their next game, and
- 6:11Speaker 1: Luke could be could be ready for the Lakers next matchup.
- 6:16Speaker 1: All right, coming up on the program here in just
- 6:18Speaker 1: a few minutes, what a visit with Texas softball head
- 6:20Speaker 1: coach Mike White, the preseason number one team in the country,
- 6:24Speaker 1: although coach White said yesterday in a media availability, how
- 6:28Speaker 1: can that be?
- 6:30Speaker 2: So we'll get his thoughts on all of that. We'll
- 6:33Speaker 2: do that. We have inconceivable this hour, we'll do that.
- 6:36Speaker 1: We'll hear a little bit from Vick Schaeffer, Texas women's
- 6:38Speaker 1: basketball coach, because they played tomorrow night, and of course
- 6:43Speaker 1: tonight for the Longhorn men, big match up against the
- 6:46Speaker 1: Arkansas Razorbacks, an Arkansas team coming off of the win
- 6:50Speaker 1: over Kentucky and Texas with a big test on tap.
- 6:53Speaker 2: So we'll look forward to that all right.
- 6:55Speaker 1: But up next, Mike White, Texas softball coach, will join
- 6:58Speaker 1: us here on the Craigway Show on am D team.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Under the Zone.
- 7:01Speaker 1: We wanted to take this opportunity because we are right
- 7:03Speaker 1: on the cusp of the start of a brand new
- 7:07Speaker 1: season for Texas. Off all, the Longhorns open in the
- 7:10Speaker 1: Louisiana Classic Friday afternoon at three point thirty against Longwood
- 7:17Speaker 1: and you can hear that on our HD three signal
- 7:20Speaker 1: FM signal here through iHeart and also online at Texas
- 7:24Speaker 1: Longhorns dot com. As they play the long Horn Lancers
- 7:27Speaker 1: on Friday, and then they'll take on Louisiana, the host
- 7:30Speaker 1: school on Friday night. So the two games Friday and
- 7:34Speaker 1: then on Saturday against Saint John's at noon, followed by
- 7:38Speaker 1: a matchup against Lamar and then you know it's on
- 7:42Speaker 1: the Huntsville for the Bearcat Classic on Sunday Tulsa and
- 7:47Speaker 1: Sam Houston, with a couple of games there before returning home.
- 7:50Speaker 1: So right out of the gate on the road, and
- 7:52Speaker 1: we're so pleased to have Mike White, Texas head coach
- 7:55Speaker 1: join us.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Now, Mike, I appreciate the time. How are you today.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Doing great things?
- 7:59Speaker 2: Craig?
- 8:00Speaker 4: Obviously the widd of this week's has been awesome for us, awful,
- 8:02Speaker 4: So I get you thinking about it and now we're ready.
- 8:05Speaker 1: To go, no doubt about it. The first thing I
- 8:06Speaker 1: got to ask is this, And I know from talking
- 8:09Speaker 1: to to Sark, from talking to Rodney Terry, from talking
- 8:13Speaker 1: to Vic Schaeffer, scheduling has become more and more a challenge.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Same thing with coach Las Nicole.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Scheduling has become more and more challenge and Intercollegiate Athletics
- 8:22Speaker 1: d SEAS for any number of reasons would would would
- 8:25Speaker 1: you say that this year was also one of those
- 8:29Speaker 1: more challenging years for you in terms of you and
- 8:32Speaker 1: your staff getting together the type of schedule that you
- 8:35Speaker 1: wanted to have for this season.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:38Speaker 4: Absolutely, I mean we if we changed the schedule so
- 8:40Speaker 4: much this this full and kind of got late into it,
- 8:44Speaker 4: and that's why we've had this this fist matchup when
- 8:46Speaker 4: we were stopping in three different cities, which I've never
- 8:49Speaker 4: done before. Cert not something you really want to do,
- 8:52Speaker 4: you know, out of the gate, but something we had
- 8:54Speaker 4: to do. Its been difficult to get teams to come
- 8:56Speaker 4: in to play us, and then uh and also you know,
- 8:59Speaker 4: to play in other venues with some teams just don't
- 9:02Speaker 4: want to play you, and that's it makes it very tough.
- 9:05Speaker 4: So but we've been able to kind of work around
- 9:07Speaker 4: it and Coach Laski has done an awesome job with that.
- 9:09Speaker 4: And you know, we even going to Ohio State and
- 9:12Speaker 4: and you know late Uly match there and this could
- 9:15Speaker 4: be you know, it could be chilly up that way.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Now you answered my first question because in looking at
- 9:21Speaker 1: the schedule, I thought, I don't think I've ever seen
- 9:24Speaker 1: that where you've played three consecutive uh you know, tournaments
- 9:29Speaker 1: or classics whatever. Uh and back to back to back
- 9:33Speaker 1: in three different cities.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Laugh. Yette Beaumont in Huntsville.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Now, I know that's the I ten corridor until you
- 9:37Speaker 1: get to Houston and go up an hour to Huntsville.
- 9:39Speaker 1: But still, in all that that could take a little
- 9:42Speaker 1: bit of toll on the team. How do you how
- 9:44Speaker 1: do you and the training staff and everybody make sure
- 9:47Speaker 1: that everybody stays fresh. I guess it's also helpful that
- 9:49Speaker 1: it's starting out at the season and this isn't happening,
- 9:52Speaker 1: say two thirds of the way through, where it could
- 9:54Speaker 1: be a grind exactly.
- 9:56Speaker 4: You know, it's going to be a difficult season as
- 9:59Speaker 4: far as travel goes anyway, going into the SEC schools
- 10:01Speaker 4: and having to travel a little bit more, I mean
- 10:04Speaker 4: having to take three flights plus the SEC tournament. So
- 10:07Speaker 4: that's this could be a good way for us to
- 10:09Speaker 4: get used to traveling, but you know, it's something we
- 10:12Speaker 4: had to do, and we just got to kind of
- 10:14Speaker 4: focus on doing the basically can during this stretch.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Well, I want to get your thoughts on the team.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I got a chuckle out of seeing the sound bite
- 10:22Speaker 1: yesterday from you when I guess somebody asked you about
- 10:26Speaker 1: this preseason number one thing and you brought up the
- 10:29Speaker 1: fact that, well, there is a four time defending national champion,
- 10:32Speaker 1: and as far as we're concerned, you're the CHAMPI until
- 10:35Speaker 1: you get beat.
- 10:35Speaker 2: I mean, what's your overall.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Feeling about this kind of thing and about preseason polls overall?
- 10:44Speaker 4: Well, I think sometimes the preseason polls people just want
- 10:46Speaker 4: to see someone different, you know, and create some sort
- 10:49Speaker 4: of uh yeah sort of story. And so this is
- 10:52Speaker 4: a good one for them, obviously taking us from last
- 10:54Speaker 4: year being ranked one going into the College World Series,
- 10:58Speaker 4: so just to carry over there, but also has a
- 11:01Speaker 4: lot about players and our program and how that how
- 11:04Speaker 4: hard they've worked, and it's an on it, don't get
- 11:06Speaker 4: me wrong, for sure, but we also know there's a
- 11:08Speaker 4: lot of work ahead of us and a lot of
- 11:09Speaker 4: really good teams to get to play.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Heard Resatwood talking about it and saying, hey, you know,
- 11:13Speaker 1: it's nice and we remember last but we remember how
- 11:16Speaker 1: last year ended, and so we've got a lot of
- 11:18Speaker 1: work to do. Has that been the attitude that you've
- 11:20Speaker 1: seen from your group reflected early on about yeah, okay,
- 11:23Speaker 1: all that stuff is nice, but uh they know the
- 11:27Speaker 1: challenges and the task ahead of them.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Yeah, it really is. And we've talked about it. It's
- 11:32Speaker 4: just a big elephant in the room, right and you know,
- 11:35Speaker 4: we know what it is. It's there. Now let's just
- 11:37Speaker 4: go play like it's not there and just play good softball.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Do the things we need to do to be able
- 11:41Speaker 4: to create, you know, good records.
- 11:44Speaker 2: One is to qualify for.
- 11:45Speaker 4: The postseason, Two is to get in the top sixteen,
- 11:47Speaker 4: and three is the top eight then hopefully win a
- 11:50Speaker 4: national championship on the end of it. But it's a
- 11:53Speaker 4: progression and it only rewards us if we play well.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I've got to get your thoughts on this. I was
- 11:59Speaker 1: I was stunned, not only by the fact that, like
- 12:02Speaker 1: you said, here's here's Oklahoma, four time defending national champion.
- 12:05Speaker 1: They're not number one, They're not even number one or
- 12:07Speaker 1: number two in their own league. They're number three. But
- 12:10Speaker 1: does that also say something about how good Florida is
- 12:12Speaker 1: since the Gators are picked number two in the league.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Oh yeah, Well, also, don't forget about Tennessee and and
- 12:18Speaker 4: m and you know all the others that are in
- 12:21Speaker 4: that league. And then of course outside of it, you've
- 12:23Speaker 4: got Jordi Ball coming back, you know, the Bill all
- 12:26Speaker 4: Americans for Okcahoma that transferred and was injured. And then
- 12:29Speaker 4: you've got Niga Canaday for Texas Tech now, and then
- 12:33Speaker 4: you've got UCLA and so you know, you've just kind
- 12:35Speaker 4: of looked past teams. And I'm sure they hope we
- 12:38Speaker 4: do look past them, but we certainly not. And we understand.
- 12:41Speaker 4: You know, any day you can get beat if you're
- 12:43Speaker 4: just done play good softball.
- 12:44Speaker 1: No question about visiting with Mike White, Texas softball head
- 12:47Speaker 1: coach here on AM thirteen hundred The Zentner.
- 12:49Speaker 2: You mentioned injuries.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you about when
- 12:54Speaker 1: you got the news about Vivi Martinez. How uh you know,
- 12:58Speaker 1: how difficult was that for you and for the team
- 13:00Speaker 1: to understand or to deal with the fact that you
- 13:04Speaker 1: weren't going to have her as important as she was
- 13:06Speaker 1: to your group last year, and I would imagine as
- 13:08Speaker 1: important as everybody figured she would be to your ball
- 13:11Speaker 1: club this year.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Oh yeah, she just uh, you know, she's kind of
- 13:14Speaker 4: one of those players you'd pay to come watch. She's
- 13:16Speaker 4: so smooth and does everything well, you know, offensively, defensively,
- 13:20Speaker 4: great kid on and off the field, you know, doesn't
- 13:23Speaker 4: get rattled. And to see that happen was kind of devastating.
- 13:27Speaker 4: It was hard, you know, especially you feel more for
- 13:30Speaker 4: the kid than anything else because obviously she had big,
- 13:32Speaker 4: big expectations having a really good junior year and now
- 13:36Speaker 4: it's going to be put off another year. I'm sure
- 13:37Speaker 4: she's going to got back stronger. We have great medical
- 13:39Speaker 4: stuff and care and everything, but it is tough. And
- 13:42Speaker 4: then the only good thing is is Craig, Is it
- 13:45Speaker 4: happened in October where we've had time to now I
- 13:48Speaker 4: currently really work some players in and out of that
- 13:51Speaker 4: position and be ready for the spring.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh so toward that end, that's where I was
- 13:55Speaker 1: going to go with. I know it takes a team
- 13:57Speaker 1: thing all the way around, but off the top of
- 13:59Speaker 1: your head, who steps in Who's the one who gets
- 14:02Speaker 1: the first responsibility of trying to not necessarily fill her shoes,
- 14:06Speaker 1: but be able to step into the role and do
- 14:09Speaker 1: what's needed of that position.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Yeah, we obviously have some athletic players, and we bought
- 14:14Speaker 4: in Katie Bennett the transfer from Abilene Christian as a
- 14:19Speaker 4: backup middle endfielder for second and short and possibly you know,
- 14:23Speaker 4: third base.
- 14:25Speaker 1: You know.
- 14:25Speaker 4: So that was one as we had trying out there,
- 14:28Speaker 4: and then Katie Stewart was another one. She'd played attle
- 14:30Speaker 4: bit of short stop and travel ball. Uh and then
- 14:33Speaker 4: Lynn Brister another freshman coming in. But eventually we decided
- 14:37Speaker 4: to go with Leanne Good at this point and it
- 14:40Speaker 4: could change, but you don't know, but Lian's played it
- 14:42Speaker 4: and travel ball before and she looks really good. Uh
- 14:45Speaker 4: So that's the way we're going to go right now.
- 14:47Speaker 4: And start with LeeAnne, and she looks so much stronger
- 14:49Speaker 4: this year. Last year she was still recovering from that
- 14:51Speaker 4: risk injury. Yeah, but this year she looks a lot stronger.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Let me get your thoughts on your pitching.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I know there's between Tea and Cavan and mac mooregan
- 15:00Speaker 1: and said, LOLLI Goodierras, You've you've got, uh, You've got
- 15:03Speaker 1: in Sophia Simpson. You've got some some known commodities in there.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I'm also curious about your freshman, Cambria Salmon and and
- 15:11Speaker 1: your thoughts on her.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Yeah. Cam Salmon's someone we looked at for a couple
- 15:15Speaker 4: of years and we're excited to get her, you know,
- 15:17Speaker 4: committed and finally in a Texas uniform and reminds me
- 15:21Speaker 4: a lot of Jess Mullins, has you know, upper sixties
- 15:23Speaker 4: velocity with a really good change up, good demeanor. I
- 15:27Speaker 4: think she's uh, you know, she struggled a little bit
- 15:29Speaker 4: coming into full as far as like location and you know,
- 15:33Speaker 4: people not swinging at some pitches that we should be
- 15:35Speaker 4: swinging at and travelable. But she's learning quickly, and obviously
- 15:39Speaker 4: she has some seniors to kind of guide her along
- 15:41Speaker 4: the way. Cabin is awesome that way, So as Mac Morgan.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Sophia Simpson's been a big help and said Loly Gucci
- 15:47Speaker 4: Areas has really come on here lately this spring, and
- 15:51Speaker 4: I like what she's doing. So we had that solid stuff.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Yeah, That's something I think I've heard you speak of
- 15:56Speaker 1: in the past, is the mixture, uh, of what the
- 16:00Speaker 1: talent pool is from your pitchers in terms of the
- 16:04Speaker 1: gifts they bring to the party, meaning their specific out
- 16:07Speaker 1: pitches or how they're setting up hitters to get them out.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Do you like what you have in terms of the
- 16:12Speaker 1: variety of how your pitchers are working in the circle
- 16:15Speaker 1: with their different array of gifts to opposing hitters.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Oh, no doubt. They're complimentary to each other, and you
- 16:22Speaker 4: want some of this a little bit different, you want
- 16:24Speaker 4: them all the same. The only thing were missing is
- 16:26Speaker 4: a lefty, of course, and with Check graduating, that's when
- 16:30Speaker 4: we don't have. But I think they have enough variety
- 16:33Speaker 4: amongst the group to be able to give us some
- 16:36Speaker 4: different looks and different options. You know, when it comes
- 16:39Speaker 4: to the time.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Of visiting here with Mike White for a couple more minutes.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I'd also be remiss if I didn't ask you about
- 16:47Speaker 1: Reese Atwood and what you're expecting at her coming off
- 16:49Speaker 1: of what she did and now she's preseason player, the
- 16:54Speaker 1: national player of the your watch list again and everything
- 16:56Speaker 1: that she did in an All American season last year
- 16:59Speaker 1: is to be someone now who has stepped up through
- 17:04Speaker 1: the last couple of years. How important is what not
- 17:09Speaker 1: not just the leadership thing, but also the productive side
- 17:13Speaker 1: of it. I guess both sides of it in terms
- 17:15Speaker 1: of leading your ball club on the field with what
- 17:17Speaker 1: she gives you.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Reese is one of those kids you
- 17:20Speaker 4: want to take it before and after pitcher, you know.
- 17:22Speaker 4: I think when she first came in, you know, she
- 17:24Speaker 4: she was pretty slight, and now you know, she's solid,
- 17:27Speaker 4: you know, and it's got a lot of home run power.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Every swing is an opportunity to leave the fields. And
- 17:32Speaker 4: you know, she just is not satisfied with her performance
- 17:35Speaker 4: at all, even though she was obviously one of the
- 17:36Speaker 4: best hitters, if not the best hit her in the
- 17:38Speaker 4: country last year. And she's pushing herself. And you know,
- 17:42Speaker 4: when you do that, you're pushing your teammates. Your teammates
- 17:44Speaker 4: are seeing that. And what I like about her is
- 17:46Speaker 4: she's wanted to step up and become a leader on
- 17:48Speaker 4: the program, leader a little more vocally as well. And
- 17:51Speaker 4: she's doing that, and so I like that we have
- 17:53Speaker 4: a group of leaders right now with her at Cavan,
- 17:57Speaker 4: you know, Jolie Mitchell and Katie Simmis. I think those
- 18:00Speaker 4: or really kind of pushing for that leadership role. We
- 18:03Speaker 4: probably won't name a captain this year. I don't think
- 18:05Speaker 4: we need one, but I think they're gonna lead by committee.
- 18:08Speaker 4: You know that play a lad is what you want,
- 18:10Speaker 4: And that's kind of what I had an Oregon there
- 18:13Speaker 4: towards the end was you know, it's kind of like
- 18:15Speaker 4: a snowball, it gets rolling, uh and and they kind
- 18:18Speaker 4: of kind of pushing each other, and that's what you want.
- 18:20Speaker 4: You want that internal motivation.
- 18:22Speaker 1: It's an interesting thing you bring up about the captain thing.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Is that is that do you is your philosophy on
- 18:28Speaker 1: that is if your team needs one as an appointed
- 18:33Speaker 1: captain to be the leader, as opposed to a team
- 18:36Speaker 1: that you have right now where you've got several, uh,
- 18:39Speaker 1: several players who are wanting to accept that mantle of leadership,
- 18:43Speaker 1: so you just let them run with it and display
- 18:45Speaker 1: their own leadership.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Well, I think that's it just let them run with
- 18:48Speaker 4: it and see what happens. And you know, hopefully they're
- 18:51Speaker 4: learning from from from being in these big tournaments. Now,
- 18:54Speaker 4: I mean the uh you know, you look at at
- 18:57Speaker 4: Woods as a junior. She's been there a colleor World
- 18:59Speaker 4: Series and that final. You know, several of them have
- 19:02Speaker 4: been in that being in that atmosphere, you know, playing
- 19:05Speaker 4: in the and they're playing in the Big twelve. So
- 19:08Speaker 4: they have that confidence about them. And that's what we want.
- 19:11Speaker 4: We want now to feel like we belong. You know,
- 19:13Speaker 4: we're not just you know, hey we got here, now
- 19:15Speaker 4: what do we do. It's like, hey, look this is
- 19:17Speaker 4: this is an opportunity for us to really take the
- 19:20Speaker 4: next step.
- 19:21Speaker 2: One more thing for you here, Mike.
- 19:24Speaker 1: It's when you have a team ranked as highly as
- 19:27Speaker 1: yours is there are very few quote unquote secrets or
- 19:31Speaker 1: unknowns or or something like that to a lot of folks.
- 19:34Speaker 1: But if there is a player on your roster that
- 19:37Speaker 1: maybe not that much has been said about or written
- 19:40Speaker 1: about that you think really could be on the precipice
- 19:43Speaker 1: of having a really big or breakout year, who might
- 19:46Speaker 1: that be?
- 19:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I kid, I say it by everybody. I think
- 19:49Speaker 4: you might have a different answer for you all too.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Yeah, So I.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Think Vic Hunter is another one I haven't really mentioned before.
- 19:56Speaker 2: So yeah, Vic Hunter.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Josh's the one that got that big hit in the
- 20:01Speaker 4: super Regional off of you know, the lifty for for
- 20:05Speaker 4: Texas A and M Kennedy.
- 20:08Speaker 1: You know.
- 20:08Speaker 4: So that was a big one for us. And she's
- 20:11Speaker 4: sitting the ball. But she sometimes she just tries to
- 20:12Speaker 4: do too much. So if we can get here just
- 20:14Speaker 4: to keep an eating keel, you think you could see
- 20:17Speaker 4: some big things from here, you know. So I'm excited
- 20:20Speaker 4: for her to see what she does.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Texas opens the season on Friday afternoon. They're in the
- 20:25Speaker 1: Louisiana Classic. They'll play Longwood and Louisiana on Friday. They'll
- 20:31Speaker 1: get in the bus and motor from Lafayette, west On.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I tend to Beaumont to play Saint John's and Lamar
- 20:37Speaker 1: on Saturday in the uhl U event, and then then
- 20:41Speaker 1: go up by forty five to Huntsville on Sunday to
- 20:44Speaker 1: play Tulsa and Sam Houston. Mike, it's great to visit
- 20:47Speaker 1: with you as always, I appreciate the time and as
- 20:49Speaker 1: you embark on this journey, best of luck to you
- 20:51Speaker 1: and the long words the rest of the way.
- 20:53Speaker 4: Hey, thanks Graig, Hook them, Hook them.
- 20:55Speaker 1: That is the head coach of Texas Softball, Mike White,
- 20:58Speaker 1: pre season number one in the country. But as he
- 21:02Speaker 1: says it, as his players say, they got a lot
- 21:04Speaker 1: to prove, so they jump right into it. And again
- 21:07Speaker 1: you can hear those games on our HD two signal.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Believe CAM ninety seven point three.
- 21:17Speaker 3: I do know it's KHD three HD th three iHeartRadio app.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Yeah, you listen the app for sure. Absolutely all right.
- 21:26Speaker 1: We've got Inconceivable coming up next here on AM thirteen
- 21:29Speaker 1: hundred the zone.
- 21:30Speaker 2: As always, we give you the.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Opportunity to chip in to respond if you have some
- 21:38Speaker 1: sort of comment, some sort of thought, something that's gnawing
- 21:42Speaker 1: at you, or just you know, just your observation on something.
- 21:45Speaker 1: If you are interested in you know what we have
- 21:50Speaker 1: to say, and yet you have your own thought on that.
- 21:53Speaker 1: That's why we give you the opportunity. So that'll be
- 21:58Speaker 1: you know, that's available the our text line. So you
- 22:01Speaker 1: text the word Texas followed by your question or comment
- 22:06Speaker 1: to eight one five three zero. So it's the word
- 22:10Speaker 1: Texas follow by your question or comment to eight one
- 22:12Speaker 1: five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply,
- 22:16Speaker 1: so so toward that end, here was here was a
- 22:19Speaker 1: text that didn't get a chance to get to yesterday,
- 22:21Speaker 1: and I wanted to. I wanted to because it's pretty,
- 22:24Speaker 1: it's it's a nice one. I like this text. I
- 22:30Speaker 1: mentioned that Mason Crosby of Georgetown, Texas USA, Georgetown, the
- 22:35Speaker 1: high school product University of Colorado, seventeen seasons in the
- 22:39Speaker 1: National Football League as a kicker for the Green Bay Packers.
- 22:41Speaker 1: The packers all time leading score announced its retirement yesterday.
- 22:44Speaker 1: He didn't he didn't play last year, didn't wind up
- 22:47Speaker 1: on a roster, and he decided to call equipped. So
- 22:50Speaker 1: he texted in congratulations to Mason Crosby in a great career.
- 22:53Speaker 1: For reference, old school Vikings kicker Fred Cox only made
- 22:58Speaker 1: fifty five percent of his career fel Mason Crosby hit
- 23:01Speaker 1: eighty one percent. Here's for reference, old school Vikings kicker
- 23:06Speaker 1: Fred Cox only made fifty five percent of his career
- 23:09Speaker 1: field goals. But he did invent the nerve football and
- 23:12Speaker 1: he looked like.
- 23:12Speaker 2: A gooda.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Old school people ava gooda played fish. I'm Barney Miller.
- 23:18Speaker 1: He was Tessio and the godfather you've seen the late
- 23:22Speaker 1: Ape Fragoda on that. Uh, that's good, That's that's good. Yeah,
- 23:26Speaker 1: Fred Cox for there for you number fourteen straight on kicker,
- 23:30Speaker 1: Fred Cox.
- 23:33Speaker 2: All right, here's here's.
- 23:35Speaker 1: The part that I really shouldn't even bother with saying,
- 23:39Speaker 1: but I'll do it anyway, because every now and then
- 23:43Speaker 1: I'm okay, Cameron with allowing a little bit of sophomoric
- 23:46Speaker 1: high school humor on the program. I try to be
- 23:49Speaker 1: a little bit above it, and every now and then
- 23:51Speaker 1: I get pulled in, just like anybody else. When I
- 23:54Speaker 1: was a kid, I was a as always like I
- 23:59Speaker 1: am now a big Rams fan. Well, the Rams foil
- 24:02Speaker 1: in the playoffs all those years in the centuries of
- 24:04Speaker 1: the Vikings mainly and the Cowboys, but the Vikings. They
- 24:08Speaker 1: just couldn't get past the Vikings. And I have friend
- 24:11Speaker 1: of mine who had moved down from Minnesota. He was
- 24:13Speaker 1: big Vikings fans. He used to give me a lot
- 24:15Speaker 1: of grief all the time. And and you know, here
- 24:19Speaker 1: we are thirteen fourteen year old kids, right and he
- 24:22Speaker 1: says to me, hey, hey, he goes, you know a
- 24:25Speaker 1: Vikings kicker is Fred Cox. I'm like, yeah, he goes,
- 24:29Speaker 1: you know, who are big a big linebacker is I said,
- 24:31Speaker 1: Wally Hilgenberg And no, no, no, no the other one. And
- 24:33Speaker 1: I said Grady Alderman, No, no, no, no the other one.
- 24:36Speaker 1: What Jeff Seamen? I said, Oh, yeah, s I E
- 24:39Speaker 1: m O N. Jeff Semen was a linebacker. He goes,
- 24:41Speaker 1: I'm Minnesota. We used to say, you know, when they
- 24:43Speaker 1: had to kick a field, go when Cox goes in
- 24:45Speaker 1: to Seamen come out.
- 24:46Speaker 2: And I was like, stop that he goes to If
- 24:49Speaker 2: I's just that's just it, you.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Know, I said, it wouldn't make sense because that would
- 24:53Speaker 1: be on the offensive side.
- 24:54Speaker 2: But he did. He did play on special teams as well.
- 24:57Speaker 1: C B on the text line says, when you I'll
- 25:00Speaker 1: go to Dallas, do you stop at the famous check stop?
- 25:02Speaker 1: I know it's a must stop for Texas fans. And
- 25:05Speaker 1: he said, and is Katie going to be a son
- 25:07Speaker 1: when they come to the mood in a few weeks. Okay,
- 25:09Speaker 1: two separate questions. That second one. I was going to
- 25:12Speaker 1: get into at Cameron on this, but let's go to
- 25:14Speaker 1: the first one.
- 25:14Speaker 2: First.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Do we stop at the famous check stop? Yes, it's
- 25:17Speaker 1: still there. It's still alive, and well so too. CB
- 25:22Speaker 1: is the big modern glitzy one across the freeway, which
- 25:28Speaker 1: is Slavachics. Now, I know some long worn people who
- 25:34Speaker 1: won't go to Slavatics because it's a you know, it's
- 25:36Speaker 1: kind of an Aggie creation. The original Slavatics is in Snook,
- 25:41Speaker 1: you know, just just west of College Station. And that
- 25:45Speaker 1: dude that does the Texas Bucket List TV show, which
- 25:48Speaker 1: is based in College Station, he's a big Aggie and one,
- 25:51Speaker 1: and they're like one of their big sponsors in Slavatics.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I don't let that bother me if I want to
- 25:55Speaker 1: if I want a good klachi, I'll go there, or
- 25:57Speaker 1: I'll go to the check stop.
- 26:00Speaker 2: So it's kind of.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Also like going to kind of one of those kitchy
- 26:05Speaker 1: kind of BUCkies type of places with all that kind
- 26:07Speaker 1: of have you ever did you ever go to Slovachics?
- 26:09Speaker 2: Okay? And check stop? This is that always? Why that
- 26:14Speaker 2: always stops at check stop? Okay?
- 26:16Speaker 1: Your dad would appreciate this. You will probably be grossed
- 26:20Speaker 1: out by it. My wife at first was kind of
- 26:27Speaker 1: turned off by it. Then she tried it and then
- 26:28Speaker 1: she kind of liked it. Uh, if you go to
- 26:32Speaker 1: the check stop, they you just like at Slavotics. Both
- 26:37Speaker 1: of those places on either side of I thirty five,
- 26:39Speaker 1: and we're talking about in the lovely little town of
- 26:41Speaker 1: West West Comma, Texas, West Texas. It's on there and
- 26:48Speaker 1: I thirty five. The name of the town is West.
- 26:51Speaker 1: It's named after a person named West. That's why it's there,
- 26:54Speaker 1: West Texas. One of my favorite signs, by the way,
- 26:57Speaker 1: all those years are doing the high school show and
- 26:58Speaker 1: being on the road, was pointed out at me one time.
- 27:02Speaker 1: One of my favorite signs in the entire state of
- 27:05Speaker 1: Texas is the sign when you get off the exit
- 27:08Speaker 1: and you're coming from the south or from the north, whatever.
- 27:13Speaker 1: But if you're coming from the south and you pull
- 27:16Speaker 1: up to the stoplight and I have West, you got
- 27:18Speaker 1: to turn right to go into town and West it's
- 27:21Speaker 1: the sign of West pointing east. Same game, if you're
- 27:26Speaker 1: coming to North, it's it's pointing to the left, so
- 27:28Speaker 1: it's the sign to go west. You got to go east.
- 27:31Speaker 1: It's one of my favorite signs in the state of Texas.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Small things anyway, they have both of these places have
- 27:38Speaker 1: sandwiches of various and sundry kinds. You know, they have
- 27:47Speaker 1: some barbecue sandwiches and they have some you know meat,
- 27:50Speaker 1: different meat sandwiches, and they have all these different kinds
- 27:53Speaker 1: of salad sandwiches, like egg salad sandwich, and tuna salad
- 27:56Speaker 1: and chicken salad and ham salad. They have all these
- 27:58Speaker 1: salad sandwiches. My favorite one is a sandwich they call
- 28:03Speaker 1: the Arnold Palmer.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I've not had that one. Yeah, now was it blowney? No? Now,
- 28:10Speaker 2: explain everybody what an Arnold Palmer is?
- 28:12Speaker 3: So sweet tea or on sweet riding on your what'd
- 28:16Speaker 3: you like in lemonade?
- 28:17Speaker 1: That's it And it was supposedly popularized by the immortal
- 28:23Speaker 1: Arnold Palmer, one of the greatest golfers of all time.
- 28:26Speaker 1: He was He was my family's favorite golfer when we
- 28:30Speaker 1: were real young, partially because he kind of bore a
- 28:34Speaker 1: somewhat striking resemblance to my dad. My dad and Arnold Palmer,
- 28:39Speaker 1: we were both from North Carolina, both from the same area,
- 28:42Speaker 1: and they they kind of looked a little like the
- 28:44Speaker 1: sandy air and all that other kind of stuff. There
- 28:46Speaker 1: was a lot of people who have thought that my
- 28:48Speaker 1: dad kind of looked a little like Arnold Palmer. But anyway,
- 28:51Speaker 1: that was the drink iced tea and lemonade, and it's
- 28:53Speaker 1: very popular. You can get at the store, and I
- 28:55Speaker 1: can get it wherever he get it. Ut club get it,
- 28:56Speaker 1: you know, a restaurant, whatever. Can I have an Arnold
- 28:58Speaker 1: Palmer place? Yeah, they know exactly what you me an
- 29:01Speaker 1: Arnold Palmer sandwich. According to the check stop in West
- 29:05Speaker 1: the Arnold Palmer sandwich is egg salad. Okay, all right,
- 29:11Speaker 1: So you take And this is the part that my
- 29:15Speaker 1: wife didn't understand it first, and then she saw it
- 29:17Speaker 1: in practice, and at first she was uh taking it back,
- 29:19Speaker 1: and then and she tried it.
- 29:20Speaker 2: She liked him. So you have it.
- 29:22Speaker 1: You have a piece of bread and you have egg
- 29:25Speaker 1: salad on one side. Then you have another piece of bread.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Instead of it being egg salad, it's tuna salad. And
- 29:33Speaker 1: then you put it together. It's half and half. She thought.
- 29:36Speaker 1: By when I said the Arnold Palmer's half tuna salad
- 29:40Speaker 1: and half egg salad, she thought one half of the
- 29:42Speaker 1: sandwich was tuna salad and one half of the sandwich
- 29:46Speaker 1: was egg salad.
- 29:46Speaker 2: No no, no, no, no, no, it's put together. She's like, yeah,
- 29:49Speaker 2: I don't want to. I said, it's right, and then
- 29:50Speaker 2: she tried. She was that's pretty good.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I didn't think I would like that, but it is
- 29:55Speaker 1: I get that almost every time I go through there.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I know that probably gows out with some people because
- 30:00Speaker 1: some people that don't like egg salad.
- 30:02Speaker 2: There's some people that don't like tuna sound.
- 30:03Speaker 1: There's a lot of people I know they don't like
- 30:06Speaker 1: filling the blank salad sandwich. They're not in the chicken
- 30:09Speaker 1: salad or eggs. I like all of those chicken salad,
- 30:12Speaker 1: ham salad, egg salad whatever.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I like all of those. But they have an Honorabd
- 30:17Speaker 2: Palmer there, so c B.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Yes, I do stop at the check stop and when
- 30:22Speaker 1: I stop there, I usually get an Honorld Palmer sandwich
- 30:26Speaker 1: if I'm gonna have something to eat. Now to his
- 30:30Speaker 1: second point and his second question, he said, is Katie
- 30:37Speaker 1: going to be a son when they come to the
- 30:39Speaker 1: mood in a few weeks. We're rolling up on the
- 30:41Speaker 1: trade deadline. When does the deadline hit? It was Thursday night. Yeah, okay,
- 30:46Speaker 1: tomorrow Kevin's name has been mentioned or tomorrow at two
- 30:50Speaker 1: pm or something. And and you've been bagging on the
- 30:55Speaker 1: co Harrison And I don't blame you for it. What
- 30:59Speaker 1: if the Cohrrison and Lens Kevin Durant, Well, that's one
- 31:03Speaker 1: of the rumors.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Ryan Windhorse from ESPN just reported that either Katie will
- 31:09Speaker 3: be a Phoenix Sun tomorrow night or Miami Heat. So
- 31:13Speaker 3: down the two teams. I don't do not think Mavericks
- 31:18Speaker 3: have enough to get Katie from from Dallas, and I
- 31:20Speaker 3: think Dallas, or rather I think Katie from decide where
- 31:22Speaker 3: he wants to go. Yeah, does not want to go
- 31:25Speaker 3: to Golden State, he said, yeah, So no return to
- 31:30Speaker 3: Golden State with Steph Curry, Drummond Green not going to
- 31:32Speaker 3: be a Phoenix Sun. So it appears either he's going
- 31:35Speaker 3: to be a member of the Miami Heat or or
- 31:37Speaker 3: Phoenix will just hold on to him and see what
- 31:39Speaker 3: happens this year.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Wow. I hope he's not wind up in Miami, but
- 31:49Speaker 2: I think it'd be kind of cool to see him
- 31:50Speaker 2: play for pat Riley.
- 31:52Speaker 1: That's true. That's that's that's a good point. I just
- 31:54Speaker 1: don't think about that because Polster is the coach, That's why.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And I have nothing against Eric Spolstra, but you know,
- 32:00Speaker 1: I just think about, you know, in the past with
- 32:02Speaker 1: the Heatles and all that other kind of stuff.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Okay, you don't like that. Yeah, A very interesting, uh,
- 32:08Speaker 3: very interesting history. If if Kevin Durant somehow wins a
- 32:11Speaker 3: championship bring with the Miami Heat was also won by
- 32:15Speaker 3: Lebron James at one point.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Absolutely, And he's on the verge of hitting the thirty
- 32:20Speaker 1: thousand point mark, isn't he believe he's pretty close? Yeah,
- 32:24Speaker 1: he should be getting pretty close to that. Obviously a
- 32:28Speaker 1: bona fide future Hall of Famer, no, no doubt about it.
- 32:33Speaker 3: But but this the Suns do it, then that's it's
- 32:36Speaker 3: a just admitting defeat and kind of just we're gonna
- 32:40Speaker 3: tear down this team, probably keep Devin Booker, but wait
- 32:43Speaker 3: for Beal's awful contract to expire.
- 32:48Speaker 2: And you know, if they if they.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Of our you know, I guess they Jimmy Butler would
- 32:52Speaker 3: probably be a part of that deal. So I don't
- 32:54Speaker 3: think Butler, Beale, and Booker are gonna win your NBA championship,
- 32:58Speaker 3: But I don't know. Well, we'll see a lot of
- 33:01Speaker 3: This is a very active trade deadline.
- 33:03Speaker 1: So you're feeling that if he, if Durant winds up
- 33:06Speaker 1: going to Miami, Butler will be in the Okay, all right,
- 33:12Speaker 1: we've got some football notes we've got to get to.
- 33:13Speaker 1: It is, after all, Super Bowl Week We'll get to
- 33:16Speaker 1: that coming up next here on A thirteen under the Zone.
- 33:18Speaker 1: We continue here on this Wednesday after day. Hey, we
- 33:22Speaker 1: were talking about Luka Doncic and how he's now in
- 33:24Speaker 1: Los Angeles. But you need to know that even though
- 33:28Speaker 1: Luca is gone, he certainly is not forgotten, as we
- 33:32Speaker 1: know in Dallas, to the extent that even though that
- 33:41Speaker 1: Luka Doncic tribute outside American Airlines Center was torn down
- 33:45Speaker 1: thrown away, the Doncic banners on the Arena and at
- 33:48Speaker 1: love Field were taken down, But that doesn't mean everybody
- 33:54Speaker 1: else around Dallas is going to forget about him, and
- 33:57Speaker 1: that includes the staff at Luca's favorite restaurant in the city.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Oh do you know what his favorite restaurant was?
- 34:06Speaker 2: McDonald's. No. Some might argue that Nick and Sam's steakhouse.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Oh, I've heard great things about you, and I rolled
- 34:18Speaker 1: right past it when we were there for SEC football
- 34:21Speaker 1: media days, rolled past Nick and Sam's. They have posted
- 34:26Speaker 1: on social media today that his signature dish is staying
- 34:31Speaker 1: on the menu Nick and Sam's. You know where Nick
- 34:33Speaker 1: and Simson, It's very close to where we did.
- 34:37Speaker 2: The The.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Did the show on Friday, the day before Texas ou
- 34:42Speaker 1: on Maple Avenue. It's very close to that because it's
- 34:46Speaker 1: on Maple, it's in the that Oaklawn area. So the chef,
- 34:55Speaker 1: Samir Durandar has said that in my twenty five plus
- 35:03Speaker 1: year career, I feel blessed to say I've met some
- 35:07Speaker 1: interesting and incredible people who have walked through the doors
- 35:10Speaker 1: of Nick and Sam's. But it's not often that you
- 35:12Speaker 1: come across someone as special as Luka Doncic. Luca is
- 35:16Speaker 1: one of the most caring, warm and funniest guys. I
- 35:19Speaker 1: know his love for Dallas shine through with every conversation
- 35:25Speaker 1: in every game. That's why we created the Luca a
- 35:29Speaker 1: dish we will continue to serve because his impact isn't
- 35:32Speaker 1: defined by his profession, but by his character. Okay, so
- 35:37Speaker 1: and there he is right there, that's the that's the
- 35:40Speaker 1: that's Luca with the executive chef there on that. There's
- 35:43Speaker 1: a reason why Luca likes this guy. You know what
- 35:46Speaker 1: the Luca is?
- 35:48Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 35:49Speaker 1: Okay, Now, Nick and SAMs is A is a famous
- 35:54Speaker 1: steakhouse in Dallas.
- 35:55Speaker 2: As we know, it's a it's a really really high
- 35:59Speaker 2: end to start with.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Well, then say that this is just a dish okay,
- 36:05Speaker 1: but who knows if that was part of it?
- 36:07Speaker 2: Sure it was.
- 36:08Speaker 1: It is a seventy seven ounce dry aged New York strip.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Seventy cent seventy seven is number right, sevent decent Who.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Can eat a seventy seven ounce stek. Luca obviously could.
- 36:28Speaker 1: That's part of the problem, right, The Mavericks will tell
- 36:31Speaker 1: you too many of the Lucas eating too many.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Of those, Fine, it's I mean, what are the sides though,
- 36:35Speaker 3: If we're getting like I want to hear it, like
- 36:37Speaker 3: lobster mac and cheese.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's supreame.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Spinish maybe, and yeah, but the dish itself is the
- 36:45Speaker 1: steak itself.
- 36:48Speaker 2: So it said.
- 36:49Speaker 1: It's no secret that Luca loved grabbing an ice meal
- 36:52Speaker 1: at Nick and Sam's. In fact, most North Texas athletes
- 36:55Speaker 1: like the longtime Dallas restaurant.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Seventy seven ounces.
- 37:03Speaker 3: I mean, he's probably first team all Night and fourth
- 37:05Speaker 3: Mike and forth be as Eddie Ornan likes to say,
- 37:08Speaker 3: Eddie Eddie. Sure, I'm sure those restaurant owners are going
- 37:11Speaker 3: to be very sad to see Luca leve because now
- 37:13Speaker 3: you're bringing in because Kyrie's vegan, right, so he probably
- 37:16Speaker 3: only goes to you know, yeah, certain restaurants, right right,
- 37:22Speaker 3: and I don't.
- 37:22Speaker 2: I don't know about ad.
- 37:23Speaker 3: You know, he gets injured so much, he's probably like
- 37:27Speaker 3: pescatarian or something.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Yeah, you could see that.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Yeah, the Luca, I mean, shoot seventy seven ounces, Yeah,
- 37:32Speaker 3: I would. I can't imagine the bills the check for
- 37:37Speaker 3: about his restaurant appearances.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, uh ca't made it reference to it.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Eddie Orton, a broadcast partner in Long Win men's basketball,
- 37:50Speaker 1: says that Cameron is a charter member of the All
- 37:53Speaker 1: Knife and Fork team because when we're on the road,
- 37:59Speaker 1: Cameron is pretty impressive.
- 38:01Speaker 2: And how he can you know, put away the chow
- 38:05Speaker 2: he can, I think he is on that team. And
- 38:09Speaker 2: he'll go back for seconds. I've seen that.
- 38:12Speaker 1: I usually just try to, you know, get a plate,
- 38:15Speaker 1: a pretty healthy sized portion and just limit it to
- 38:18Speaker 1: one serve. He can take it to the play. I'll
- 38:20Speaker 1: go back for dessert, but that sort of thing. But yeah,
- 38:23Speaker 1: and he'll go back for seconds. He will if he
- 38:25Speaker 1: got some beef and go back and get a little
- 38:27Speaker 1: piece of fish on that. But he's impressed with how
- 38:30Speaker 1: you can have a good size play clean and off.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Then go back.
- 38:33Speaker 1: And refill it with the same items and then polish
- 38:38Speaker 1: it all back off again, and they say it's pretty impressive.
- 38:41Speaker 2: They feed Texas basketball very well.
- 38:44Speaker 1: They do. And I learned a long time ago. If
- 38:48Speaker 1: I tried to keep up with that, I would weigh
- 38:49Speaker 1: four hundred pounds. So I stopped. I learned that a
- 38:53Speaker 1: long time ago. In fact, when I got married the
- 38:57Speaker 1: first time, when Laurie and I got married back in
- 38:59Speaker 1: nineteen eighty six, I'm six feet tall and I'm still
- 39:05Speaker 1: six feet tall, six feet tall, one hundred and forty
- 39:08Speaker 1: seven pounds. I was rail thin. Now I did gain
- 39:13Speaker 1: like twenty four pounds the first year we were married.
- 39:16Speaker 1: I went to like one seventy one.
- 39:18Speaker 2: But I didn't.
- 39:18Speaker 1: But it was a slow climb to get me to
- 39:20Speaker 1: where I am now. But I had to stop eventually
- 39:24Speaker 1: because it would just, yeah, it would get too difficult
- 39:26Speaker 1: on that. Here's something else that Cameron is feasted on.
- 39:29Speaker 3: Well, real quick, getcha is There's always cheeseheak available, There's
- 39:34Speaker 3: always cookies.
- 39:34Speaker 2: And I had to cut back.
- 39:36Speaker 1: You did that puzuokie thing last Friday night. Matton Rouge didn't.
- 39:39Speaker 3: Yeah, me and coach Byron Jones we split a zookie
- 39:42Speaker 3: with a healthy scoop of vanilla ice cream line, which
- 39:45Speaker 3: was very good.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Yeah. So I think it was called Slabs or Stabs
- 39:51Speaker 2: in the name of the restaurant in Baton Rouge.
- 39:53Speaker 3: Which if you're in that area, you gotta check that
- 39:56Speaker 3: out here. Yeah, I was really impressed with it. It's
- 39:59Speaker 3: called Stab Stab that's the name of it.
- 40:01Speaker 1: Stab Sta yep, like in the Dallas Forward there a
- 40:06Speaker 1: knife is a is a well known steakhouser. Stab is
- 40:10Speaker 1: the name of it. It reminded me a lot of
- 40:12Speaker 1: a place I go to in Myrtle Beach. In fact,
- 40:15Speaker 1: went there the night before Lyndon I got married, or
- 40:17Speaker 1: a couple of nights before, called New York Prime, which
- 40:21Speaker 1: is really not They have three locations, ones in New York,
- 40:23Speaker 1: ones in uh Atlanta, and ones in Myrtle Beach. And
- 40:28Speaker 1: uh it's it's it's a really it's a really nice steakhouse.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Uh. And we have some very very nice steakhouses in
- 40:34Speaker 2: this town.
- 40:36Speaker 1: You know.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Uh Vin Junks Steakhouse is really really good.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Jake Carver's Jake Carvers you can go to, you know, Flemings,
- 40:45Speaker 1: you can go to. There's any number that you can
- 40:47Speaker 1: go to that are really really good. Uh No, no
- 40:50Speaker 1: complaints about.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Any of those.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Another thing that I mentioned that camera would sink his
- 40:54Speaker 1: teeth into headline. Live Golf announces major change to its
- 41:00Speaker 1: scoring system. They announced a major scoring change today on
- 41:06Speaker 1: the eve of their season opening event in Riod in
- 41:08Speaker 1: Saudi Aradia. That whenever I think a Riod, remember Riod
- 41:13Speaker 1: is where the US base was. My younger brother was
- 41:17Speaker 1: in the Air Force in the Persian Gulf War, and
- 41:22Speaker 1: there was all of this concern on the first night
- 41:24Speaker 1: when the January sixteenth to ninety one, when the US
- 41:27Speaker 1: launched Operation Desert Storm and went in and attacked Iraq
- 41:32Speaker 1: and all of that. The was all of this question is, well,
- 41:35Speaker 1: Iraq has these scud missiles and let's see and they're
- 41:42Speaker 1: going to.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Launch them at it.
- 41:44Speaker 1: And my brother the way, my brother tells that we
- 41:45Speaker 1: had these Patriot missiles which we hadn't even tried out yet,
- 41:48Speaker 1: so we weren't one hundred percent sure.
- 41:50Speaker 2: They were going to be okay.
- 41:51Speaker 1: But they put them in, they put them in practice
- 41:54Speaker 1: on the first night when Iraq tried to launch the
- 41:58Speaker 1: scuds and the Patriots took them all out and they're like, hey,
- 42:00Speaker 1: it works. That's pretty cool. So he was at Riodd
- 42:04Speaker 1: and was one of the people that would be sounding
- 42:06Speaker 1: the alarm and stuff would come in. So anyway, here's
- 42:08Speaker 1: Live Golf as a season opening event in Riodd in
- 42:12Speaker 1: Saudi Arabia. For the first time in Live Golf's history,
- 42:16Speaker 1: every player scorer in every round will count toward his
- 42:20Speaker 1: team's total score. Why does that seem Why would that
- 42:27Speaker 1: be such a hard thing to adopt? Anyway, last season,
- 42:30Speaker 1: the best three scores were taken in the first two rounds,
- 42:33Speaker 1: with all four team members scores counting only for the
- 42:35Speaker 1: final eighteen. Live Golf acknowledged several potential ramifications related to
- 42:40Speaker 1: the format change, including increased volatility on the leader board
- 42:46Speaker 1: range goats GC captain Bubba Watson said it does make
- 42:51Speaker 1: volatility bigger, crazier.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Nobody can hide. You're gonna have to be committed on.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Every hole, every shot I scorers will be a killer. Previously,
- 43:00Speaker 1: any golfer who had a bad day in the first
- 43:03Speaker 1: two rounds could hope to be bailed out by his
- 43:05Speaker 1: three teammates, and Louis use Taysen said there's no more
- 43:09Speaker 1: looking at the scoreboard and thinking, Okay, I'm Okay, my
- 43:12Speaker 1: team's playing well.
- 43:13Speaker 2: That definitely changes things.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Depth now at a premium Legion thirteen captain John Rahm said,
- 43:20Speaker 1: I like it. I think it benefits a team like ours.
- 43:23Speaker 1: I think we have four really strong players that are
- 43:24Speaker 1: really consistent.
- 43:25Speaker 2: What do you make of that? I don't know, Craig.
- 43:28Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not a big live golf guy.
- 43:30Speaker 3: I mean it does kind of make sense to you know,
- 43:33Speaker 3: have all the guys points count towards the team when
- 43:36Speaker 3: you play the Ryder Cup?
- 43:37Speaker 2: Right?
- 43:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't take away well, well, ever had the
- 43:40Speaker 3: worst match doesn't Those points don't count, you know.
- 43:43Speaker 1: I mean they have best ball when they play best
- 43:45Speaker 1: ball or alternate shot, right, but.
- 43:48Speaker 3: Each match points count towards the total. And with this,
- 43:51Speaker 3: you know, the lowest score didn't count. So again, this
- 43:55Speaker 3: is not going to change the way I view live
- 43:58Speaker 3: golf or do not golf. The big thing, Craig, is
- 44:01Speaker 3: that the USGA is going to offer up a special
- 44:04Speaker 3: exemption now to live for the US Open starting this season.
- 44:07Speaker 1: All right, So is that a step closer to this
- 44:10Speaker 1: whole merger thing? Is this thing gonna happen or what?
- 44:13Speaker 2: It's a great question, Craig.
- 44:14Speaker 3: It's been We're close on what two years, Yeah, and
- 44:17Speaker 3: nothing's really changed, you know. Kind of reading through the
- 44:20Speaker 3: press conference scripts from this year of guys like Rory
- 44:24Speaker 3: and JT and Speeth and Scotty, and it's it seems
- 44:27Speaker 3: like it's getting closer, but we're still seem to be
- 44:31Speaker 3: some far you know, far away.
- 44:32Speaker 2: I don't. I'll tell you this, Craig.
- 44:34Speaker 3: If we do get some sort of merger between Live
- 44:36Speaker 3: Golf and the PGA Tour, it's not going to be
- 44:38Speaker 3: everyone playing the same tournaments each week. Live Golf is
- 44:42Speaker 3: going to have their schedule. Phil Mickelson, Bryson, Brooks, all
- 44:46Speaker 3: those guys will continue to play on the Live Golf Search.
- 44:49Speaker 2: So it's not going to be emerging then. No.
- 44:51Speaker 3: They might be part of the same ownership group or
- 44:55Speaker 3: something like that, but there will still be separate tours,
- 44:57Speaker 3: separate tours, separate tours for sure.
- 44:59Speaker 2: In the pg Tour will continue to navigate.
- 45:02Speaker 3: What they want to do is possibly be able to
- 45:04Speaker 3: have these guys like maybe Brooks and bryceon want to play.
- 45:07Speaker 3: They might schedule it to where the week of the
- 45:10Speaker 3: Phoenix Open instead of having a Lift Golf tournament this week.
- 45:13Speaker 3: They might have won the week of I don't know.
- 45:16Speaker 3: They are sim classic and that way, guys like brooks In,
- 45:19Speaker 3: Bryson and Phil and whoever can go play the WM
- 45:23Speaker 3: Phoenix Open upon for the tournament. They continue to play
- 45:25Speaker 3: their lift golf schedule. But I don't know how it
- 45:27Speaker 3: would work for PJ Tour guys who want to play
- 45:29Speaker 3: the live golf schedule. And I don't think PJ Tour
- 45:32Speaker 3: players want to go play in Ria, Dad, or go
- 45:35Speaker 3: play in in Europe, or play in South America or
- 45:39Speaker 3: South Africa. They want to be able to play in
- 45:41Speaker 3: the US because they live in the United States. So
- 45:45Speaker 3: if we do get some sort of framework framework agreement,
- 45:48Speaker 3: they're still going to be two separate tours. The thing is,
- 45:50Speaker 3: can we get these guys on live back in the majors.
- 45:54Speaker 3: I'll tell you what.
- 45:55Speaker 1: There's a lot of difference between Pebble Beach and Riodd
- 45:58Speaker 1: to tell you that, although some would say there's not
- 46:00Speaker 1: much difference between Phoenix and Riott, it's pretty warm in
- 46:03Speaker 1: both places, all right. More coming up here on AM
- 46:06Speaker 1: thirteen hunder the Zone, ares we continue on a yacht
- 46:08Speaker 1: rock Wednesday here on thirteen hundred Zone. Speaking of yacht rock,
- 46:14Speaker 1: some of these said is Michael McDonald the Michael Jordan
- 46:17Speaker 1: of yacht Rock? I believe it to be true. Well,
- 46:20Speaker 1: that would depend on if you feel that Michael Jordan
- 46:26Speaker 1: is the greatest NBA player of all time, the greatest
- 46:28Speaker 1: basketball player of all time.
- 46:30Speaker 2: And if you think that his.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Sculpture, like the George Washington one, should be the first
- 46:42Speaker 1: one on there, because Michael McDonald absolutely is that. Absolutely,
- 46:47Speaker 1: there's no question about it. And again I felt that
- 46:51Speaker 1: long before I saw the documentary and I saw the
- 46:53Speaker 1: Lennon and I watched the documentary two three weeks ago,
- 46:56Speaker 1: and it confirmed everything that I always thought and felt
- 46:59Speaker 1: about yacht rock, how it kind of melded together in
- 47:03Speaker 1: a mishmash and really starting the seventies, and that all
- 47:07Speaker 1: roads led back to Steely Dan, the session musicians, Michael
- 47:14Speaker 1: McDonald and even Toto, all other musicians who played on
- 47:18Speaker 1: so many of these other things. So it all kind
- 47:19Speaker 1: of led back to if you're talking about bands on
- 47:21Speaker 1: the Mount Rushmore, obviously Toto would would be the lead
- 47:25Speaker 1: one on that, but there were several as well. But
- 47:29Speaker 1: that also depends on how you feel about, you know,
- 47:32Speaker 1: whether Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time
- 47:34Speaker 1: where do you stand on I've forgotten where do you
- 47:36Speaker 1: stand on that?
- 47:37Speaker 2: Yeah? Greatest of all time? Yep, Lebron's best career of
- 47:41Speaker 2: all time.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Okay, all right, I'm glad you said it that way
- 47:44Speaker 1: because I'm I'm not going to say I had a
- 47:49Speaker 1: struggle with it, or we're even beginning to have a
- 47:52Speaker 1: struggle with it. I've always felt that that Michael Jordan
- 47:56Speaker 1: was the greatest player of all time, and I still
- 47:57Speaker 1: believe that. But the the more Lebron James does, and
- 48:03Speaker 1: the more he continues to achieve, and the more he
- 48:07Speaker 1: continues to age and yet continue to achieve. Now he's
- 48:13Speaker 1: forty and he's still hitting milestone after milestone, you know,
- 48:20Speaker 1: and the greatest scorer of all time. There are people
- 48:25Speaker 1: that will argue that and say that he's the greatest, greatest.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Encompasses a lot of different things. It's not just statistics,
- 48:34Speaker 1: it's how you affect the game. Lebron was always at
- 48:37Speaker 1: his best, I thought, when he had really good players
- 48:40Speaker 1: around him, who then elevated his greatness to super stratospheric
- 48:47Speaker 1: levels at times. But he had guys with him who
- 48:51Speaker 1: could make that And that could be said for just
- 48:54Speaker 1: about any great great player, you got to have a
- 48:56Speaker 1: supporting cast, but he seemed to benefit from it even
- 49:00Speaker 1: more than others. Or Michael Jordan could have some absolutely
- 49:04Speaker 1: spectacular moments even when he didn't have the.
- 49:08Speaker 2: Best cast around him. Is the way.
- 49:11Speaker 1: By the way the game last Wednesday went all miss
- 49:13Speaker 1: was that was Scottie Pippenson across the floor from us.
- 49:15Speaker 2: Right it was.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Yeah, he was behind me in the check in line
- 49:18Speaker 1: after I ubered up to Memphis to fly home. Yeah,
- 49:22Speaker 1: I didn't notice it until after I checked in, and
- 49:25Speaker 1: then I turned around and there was Scottie. They had
- 49:27Speaker 1: had a bucket hat on hanging out with he had
- 49:30Speaker 1: somebody with him on that.
- 49:31Speaker 2: So he was there to take in the.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Game on Wednesday and then was back out there on
- 49:37Speaker 1: Thursday morning on that So to answer the Texters question, yeah, yeah,
- 49:44Speaker 1: I guess you could. I guess you could say that
- 49:47Speaker 1: that also, you know applies you could do that. Somebody said,
- 49:53Speaker 1: as a former member of the sports media during my twenties,
- 49:57Speaker 1: the best parts of the job are free tickets, free food,
- 50:01Speaker 1: and mileage reports. Well, uh, the mileage reports have kind
- 50:10Speaker 1: of gone the way of the dinosaur. In large measure.
- 50:14Speaker 1: There did did some still like writers still kind of
- 50:18Speaker 1: deal with it. We don't really tickets don't really you know,
- 50:24Speaker 1: we get those on a on occasion, that sort of thing. Food, Yeah,
- 50:28Speaker 1: there's media meals. Some media meals are better than others.
- 50:32Speaker 2: Uh.
- 50:33Speaker 1: The barbecue chicken at Baton Rouge the other day wasn't bad. Good, Yeah,
- 50:37Speaker 1: that was that was okay. I don't always eat the
- 50:41Speaker 1: media meal for the same reasons that we were talking
- 50:44Speaker 1: about earlier. If I if I ate every meal that
- 50:46Speaker 1: was offered to me on a trip, i'd weigh four
- 50:49Speaker 1: hundred pounds. So I don't, you know. But but yeah,
- 50:54Speaker 1: there's there's that. So I get that. I I understand that,
- 50:57Speaker 1: and I understand how that means a lot that some
- 50:59Speaker 1: guys on there they sure they eat to. My oldest son,
- 51:03Speaker 1: Andy is a is a videographer and an editor at
- 51:08Speaker 1: k x AN. When he came out of college and
- 51:11Speaker 1: he was the baseball team videographer at Angelo State, one
- 51:15Speaker 1: of the top Division two programs in the country. In fact,
- 51:18Speaker 1: they're the defending national champions, I believe, and they're number
- 51:21Speaker 1: two in the country in the preseason. Polar're really good
- 51:23Speaker 1: and they were good when he was there, and you know,
- 51:27Speaker 1: for the old quote unquote typical poorole college student or whatever,
- 51:31Speaker 1: you know, one of the baseball team on the road
- 51:32Speaker 1: and they're getting everybody, you know a burger and fries
- 51:36Speaker 1: and something whatever at McDonald's whatever.
- 51:38Speaker 2: That mental life.
- 51:39Speaker 1: And then when he got out of college and he
- 51:41Speaker 1: was working in minor league baseball for the Lexington Legends
- 51:45Speaker 1: Royals low a ball team. When he was working for them,
- 51:51Speaker 1: he made sure he ate at the ballpark in the
- 51:53Speaker 1: clubhouse every day because otherwise, you know, if you's gonna
- 51:57Speaker 1: eat that day or whatever.
- 51:59Speaker 2: So I get that. I understand that. That makes sense.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Somebody said, I hope you tip your Uber driver, because
- 52:07Speaker 1: I sure didn't. Sincerely, Scotty, no tipping, Pippin. I did
- 52:12Speaker 1: tip my Uber driver because that was an eighty mile
- 52:16Speaker 1: Uber driver. It was an eighty mile trip on Uber
- 52:22Speaker 1: to get me up to Memphis to where I could
- 52:23Speaker 1: fly home, and I did. I tipped him. Oh, he
- 52:24Speaker 1: did a good job on that. Pippin probably didn't tip.
- 52:28Speaker 1: I think I told this before.
- 52:29Speaker 5: You know.
- 52:29Speaker 1: I have my brother and sister in law are retired
- 52:33Speaker 1: now and they live in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
- 52:36Speaker 1: But for twenty five almost thirty years. My older brother
- 52:40Speaker 1: managed the hotel and casino shuttle drivers at all of
- 52:45Speaker 1: the station casinos in Las Vegas, Boulder Station, Sunset Station,
- 52:49Speaker 1: all of those in Las Vegas. My sister in law
- 52:54Speaker 1: dealt Bakara in the high limit room at the Venetian.
- 52:58Speaker 1: So she got a chance to to, you know, deal
- 53:03Speaker 1: baccarat to some big names like Mike Kruszewski, who was
- 53:07Speaker 1: always a really good tipper, she said, Charles Barkley, great tipper,
- 53:12Speaker 1: Michael Jordan, good tipper.
- 53:15Speaker 2: Tiger Woods.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Eh, you know, not much, but okay, Dennis Rodman, fabulous tipper.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Scottie Pippen, no tipping Pippin. There's a reason he is
- 53:29Speaker 1: the name. So yeah, so, and she said she never
- 53:33Speaker 1: said anything or anything anybody. She kind of knew in
- 53:35Speaker 1: advanced what was going to be the case there. So anyway,
- 53:38Speaker 1: all right, we'll be back to wrap up hour number
- 53:40Speaker 1: two here on thirteen under the Zone, and then don't
- 53:42Speaker 1: forget Longhorn basketball tonight as long. Oorne's take on the
- 53:45Speaker 1: Arkansas Razorbacks at Moody Center seven point thirty is our
- 53:49Speaker 1: pregame star time here on AM thirteen under the Zone,
- 53:52Speaker 1: as well as on ninety eight point one FMK vett
- 53:55Speaker 1: uh and the tip off at eight o'clock important game
- 53:59Speaker 1: for Texas and I opportunity to draw even in conference
- 54:02Speaker 1: play at five and five, and the way the SEC
- 54:04Speaker 1: is going these days. Listen, if you can be around
- 54:08Speaker 1: the five hundred mark, you're going to really enhance your
- 54:12Speaker 1: opportunity to make the NCAA tournament. We talked about the
- 54:15Speaker 1: bracketological prognostications yesterday from both Joe Lenardi at ESPN and
- 54:21Speaker 1: Jerry Palm from CBS Sports, and Lenardi at Texas is
- 54:25Speaker 1: a nine seed matched up with Baylor.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Interestingly enough, Baylor and eight sea.
- 54:30Speaker 1: Of course, Taylor didn't do itself any favors with its
- 54:32Speaker 1: loss in Luba last night to Texas Tech, but they
- 54:37Speaker 1: had that match up in Raleigh with the winner to draw. Duke,
- 54:44Speaker 1: you'd be all right with that, though, North Carolina native
- 54:46Speaker 1: that you are. You'd be okay with going to Raleigh
- 54:49Speaker 1: for the NCAA tournament.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Huh.
- 54:50Speaker 3: I would be okay as a basketball fan getting to
- 54:53Speaker 3: see Cooper Flag play.
- 54:54Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go.
- 54:55Speaker 3: Now, as a worker employee of the University of Texas,
- 54:59Speaker 3: you know, not facing the second round would be ideal
- 55:02Speaker 3: or even even Baylor, but it probably wouldn't be too bad.
- 55:05Speaker 3: I mean, we were just there a few months ago.
- 55:07Speaker 3: I mean looking at the other locations for the first round.
- 55:10Speaker 3: Craig not not too excited about it, to be honest.
- 55:13Speaker 2: With you, but part up about which star are you?
- 55:17Speaker 3: Not from what I've heard from you and some of
- 55:18Speaker 3: the other guys. But hey, if you're dancing, you're dancing right,
- 55:22Speaker 3: that's exactly right. Cleveland would be all right because rock
- 55:24Speaker 3: and Roll Hall of Fame. I've never been there before
- 55:26Speaker 3: I got up there. I have anything Cleveland that might
- 55:28Speaker 3: be worth going to.
- 55:30Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 55:30Speaker 3: Seattle is Seattle. None's wrong with Seattle. I heard that
- 55:33Speaker 3: this year they're going to be inducting your supply, so
- 55:35Speaker 3: maybe we can. I'm not going then if that's I'm
- 55:39Speaker 3: just kidding out.
- 55:40Speaker 1: If they ever get into that, that's when I boycott
- 55:42Speaker 1: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame if it happens
- 55:45Speaker 1: that way. But anyway, yeah, we'll see important game, definitely
- 55:50Speaker 1: for Texas tonight. To try to draw it in Arkansas
- 55:55Speaker 1: with the winter For Kentucky, now, some might question how
- 55:58Speaker 1: well that's going to agents Kentucky. He was summarily flattened
- 56:02Speaker 1: by Ole Miss last night. Boy, they just could not
- 56:05Speaker 1: miss from three point range. It was good that the
- 56:08Speaker 1: log Wrens defended the three pretty well against them, and
- 56:10Speaker 1: they didn't make that many threes, but they made some
- 56:13Speaker 1: in that game a week ago tonight over in Oxford.
- 56:16Speaker 1: But they just they blasted Kentucky with that. So, you know, again,
- 56:21Speaker 1: if the log Worns were able to keep pace with
- 56:23Speaker 1: some of these other teams, and that would include Kentucky
- 56:27Speaker 1: right out about the five hundred mark in conference play,
- 56:30Speaker 1: if they're able to do that, that enhances their tournament profile,
- 56:36Speaker 1: and their tournament profile is being upraised and uplifted simply
- 56:42Speaker 1: because of what they are capable of doing, what they
- 56:46Speaker 1: have done, and what they can still do in conference
- 56:49Speaker 1: play because as we know, the non conference schedule wasn't
- 56:52Speaker 1: one of the top of the line non conference schedules.
- 56:54Speaker 1: They had a difficult time trying to schedule some really
- 56:57Speaker 1: top flight non conference opponents. Was the best of those
- 57:00Speaker 1: and you kind has even fallen off some and inn
- 57:05Speaker 1: C State it's it's a five hundred n C State
- 57:08Speaker 1: team that they played in the sec ACC Challenge, you know,
- 57:15Speaker 1: playing Syracuse and Saint Joe's.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Okay, you know, in.
- 57:19Speaker 1: I mean, that's not playing Saint Leo's or something like that,
- 57:21Speaker 1: or a D two school or anything like that, but
- 57:25Speaker 1: it's you know it, it puts a real push on
- 57:30Speaker 1: you to make sure that you can continue to get
- 57:31Speaker 1: quad one victories. And almost not maybe not every game,
- 57:37Speaker 1: almost every game in conference playing the SEC is a
- 57:40Speaker 1: quad one game for Texas. So tonight they play Arkansas
- 57:45Speaker 1: and again that comes your way at eight o'clock and
- 57:51Speaker 1: we'll have it for you. You're on the zone beginning
- 57:54Speaker 1: at seven thirty. And of course the Texas women play
- 57:59Speaker 1: tomorrow night against anderbill As they try to keep things
- 58:01Speaker 1: rolling there. They're up to number four in the country
- 58:04Speaker 1: most of the I think most there's only a couple
- 58:09Speaker 1: on the women's side. For the bracketologists have Texas as
- 58:14Speaker 1: a two seed right now. When we had Vic Shaeffer
- 58:18Speaker 1: on last week, he said, you could bet your bottom
- 58:20Speaker 1: dollar that if they defend their home court, if they're
- 58:24Speaker 1: a two seed or even a one, and defend their
- 58:29Speaker 1: home court, win their first two games at Moody Center,
- 58:32Speaker 1: he said, you can bet your bottom dollar that. And
- 58:36Speaker 1: of course, in the way, in the women's turn of
- 58:37Speaker 1: the way they do it, they put two Sweet sixteen
- 58:41Speaker 1: slash Elite eight regional sites in the same city, in
- 58:45Speaker 1: the same building. They tried that last year for the
- 58:47Speaker 1: first time with Portland and Alby this year it's Spokane
- 58:51Speaker 1: in Birmingham and Vic says, you bet your bottom dollar
- 58:54Speaker 1: they won't be in Birmingham.
- 58:55Speaker 2: He goes, oh, they'll send us out west.
- 58:56Speaker 1: And he told the story about when they were one
- 58:59Speaker 1: seed and missus state and got sent to Eugene, Oregon
- 59:06Speaker 1: where Oregon had Sabrina Unesque and all them and they
- 59:12Speaker 1: had to play as a one seed basically in a
- 59:15Speaker 1: hostile environment there in the Elite eight and got knocked out.
- 59:18Speaker 2: And he's right, it makes a good point. A one
- 59:22Speaker 2: seed should not have to deal with that.
- 59:24Speaker 1: But he thinks that And if you look at those
- 59:29Speaker 1: prognostications they have Texas slated to go to Spokane. I
- 59:36Speaker 1: think everybody can probably figure out South Carolina would be
- 59:39Speaker 1: one of the ones that would be slided to Birmingham,
- 59:41Speaker 1: and probably LSU would be the other, unless Texas handles
- 59:45Speaker 1: its business down the stretch beating LSU and then beating
- 59:49Speaker 1: perhaps one of the other two big heavyweights that are
- 59:53Speaker 1: still to come on their schedule. Obviously, South Carolina the
- 59:56Speaker 1: Sunday Super Bowl Sunday, a week from tomorrow, they go
- 59:59Speaker 1: to Lexing and Tuck and play Kentucky.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: That's a big game.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Kentucky has only one conference loss, LSU has only one
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: conference loss. South Carolina has no conference losses as we know,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: and Texas has one loss. So they're all chasing South Carolina.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: But there's these other teams. LSU and Kentucky were right
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: there with Texas. And as I said to Kathy Harston
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: the other day on Sunday after the win in College
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Station over Texas, A and M, all the Logorns did
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: was to hold serve and they did do that and
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: stay with only one loss in conference play as they
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: turned the corner toward the second half of conference play.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: So anyway, that's tomorrow night. That's an eight o'clock game
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: tomorrow night at Moody, and we'll make the same suggestions
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: you that we did last week and even the week before.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: This is a three consecutive eight o'clock starts for Texas. Well,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: it was supposed to be the Tennessee game got moved
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: up one hour as we know, because of the travel
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: issues with the snow and everything that LSU had trying
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: to get to South Carolina. But as we said, we
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: make the same suggestion to you that we did last week.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: Walghorn Weekly with Rodney Terry is tomorrow night at six
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: o'clock at Pluckers, the West Campus location. So why not
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: go out there to Pluckers and get yourself ready for
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: the ball game. Listen to Coach Terry talks some Longhorn
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: men's hoops action, and enjoy some great wings and then
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: when it's over at seventies, still got plenty of time
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: to go right down the road over to the movie
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: center to see this Texas women's team in actually against Vanderbilt,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: which will be a good test for them. Vanderbilt ranked
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: twenty fourth and they have a win over Tennessee this year.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Shay Routh the former big time post player for Yukon
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: in the early days of Geno Rims dynasty building in Stores, Connecticut.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: She's the head coach at Vanderbilt. So anyway, that's for
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: tomorrow night. But for the Long Corn men, it's tonight
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: against Arkansas. And then speaking of Vanderbilt, and then the
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Long Wrorn's gone on a plane Friday fly to Nashville.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: They played Vanderbilt at noon on Saturday, so noon.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: On Saturday for them, and then come back after that
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: and then they go back to that Tuesday of rotation
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: at least for one week because the Alabama Crimson tied
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: number four in the country, come in the following Tuesday.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: And then they have another Wednesday game that would be
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: against Arkansas in Fayetteville, so they still have that.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: So there's still a lot to come on the schedule.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: Some big games for Texas, Kentucky at home, like I said,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: Alabama at home, and they have to go to Arkansas again.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: But a chance if the Longhorns handle their business, they
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: have Georgia at home and they have Oklahoma at home.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: If they can finish at or pretty close to five hundred,
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: like eight and ten, if not nine and nine or
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: ten and eight would be even would be fabulous in
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: this league. But if they if they're able to finish
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: somewhere in that neighborhood, I think it would lock them in.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: It would cement them in into being in the NCAA tournament.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: But you know Rodney talks about you know, live where
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: your feet are today, and so that means tonight in
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: getting ready for an Arkansas team that comes off it's
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: very impressive win over Kentucky on Saturday night, and they
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: have the three former Kentucky Wildcats on that team as well.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: We've talked quite a bit about that earlier in the program,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: and it'll be it'll be a good test for Texas
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: tonight at eight o'clock. All right, We've got some other
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: things to get to when we get to some NBA
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: coming up, and and then there's kind of an important
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: birthday to take note of, and I'll I'll pass this
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: along to Cameron Parker, the producer, because it might have
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: some interest for him.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: I'll just leave it at that, and I'll put it
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: I'll put it that way, so we'll get to all
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: of that.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: We'll cane here on this Wednesday afternoon here in the
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Greater Austin and Central Texas area.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: Hope your day is going all right again.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: If you like to text the program, all you have
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: to do is text the word Texas follow by your
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: question or comment to eight one five three zero. So
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: you text the word Texas follow by your question comment
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and data
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: rates may apply, or you can even use access us
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: via the talkback system there on the iHeartRadio app, that
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: brand new and improved and shiny new iHeart Radio app.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: If you don't have a downloaded downloaded, it's free, easy
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: to manipulate and work and maneuver. And then you just
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: call up AM thirteen under the zone and the search
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: part pops right up. Then you'll see a little red button.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: There's two buttons. One is the little white one with
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: a like an arrow triangle, that's if you want to
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: listen to the programming. And then the other one has
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: the one with a little red bunt with white microphone.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: There's also preset you can put in there as well,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: but anyway, the red button with the white microphone is
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: what you want to hit to.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Leave us a talkback message. You have up to thirty
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: seconds to do that.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: So a couple of different ways to reach us if
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: you want to text us or leave us a voice message.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: All right, more coming up here on this Wednesday afternoon
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: here on AM thirteen hundred the Zone. I mentioned Vick Schaefer,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Texas Women's head coach, and we want to give you
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: a little bit of what.
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: He completed in his his media zoom availability. Today.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: We'll give you a little snippet of the bulk of it,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: because you know, Vic, Vic is a volume. You know
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: he's it's a solid it's a solid chunk of material.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: And it's pretty good too. It's really good listening. You
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: learn a lot, not only about basketball, but about human
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: relations with basketball players and history and all sorts of things.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: So we're going to bring you the bulk of that tomorrow,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: but we did want to give you a little taste
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: of it today as Texas is coming off of the
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: win last Saturday and Sunday excuse me in college station
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: over Texas A and M, and now getting ready for
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: this matchup with Vanderbilt tomorrow night at eight o'clock at
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: Moody Center, a game you can hear on one oh
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: three point one FM, Austin's eighty station.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: We'll be on the air at seven forty five with
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: that one. So I'm going to give you a little bit.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: This is from some of the Q and A that
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: the media had with Vic talking about specific players, talking
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: about the matchup, talking about what his team needs to
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: do here down the stretch of the regular season, not
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: only in terms of enhancing their NCAA tournament seating profile
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: trying to get to that one seed, but also just
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: to be playing their best basketball going into the postseason,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: because you have to have that on hand when you
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: go into the NCAA tournament.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: He's some thoughts from Vick Schaefer.
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: Do you worry about losing that a key element of
- 1:07:04Speaker 6: your defense, like in the men's game, the full court press,
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: like you said, because of the ball handler shooters, it's
- 1:07:12Speaker 6: all but disappeared from men's college basketball. Do you worry
- 1:07:15Speaker 6: about losing that from your team someday?
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: No, I don't, you know, Mark, even.
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: Even when people, you know, we see every press attack
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: in the country, you know, and m was screening this
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: the other night with their five player or they were
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: breaking their five player up, you know, to get the
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: inbound even getting your five player. Think about it that
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: five players used to what Okay, they scored, Let me
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: run down to the other end, getting my cubby hole
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: down here and do my thing. Now they got to
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: worry about Okay, I got to set the screen. It
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: has to be legal, which a lot of them aren't.
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: I got to make sure it's legal so I don't
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: get a file. If I do catch the inbound pass,
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: I gotta have ball skills to be able to get it.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: Back to my guard.
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: So the stress of even breaking to get open, the
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: energy exerted you do that over a forty minute game,
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: even that can wear on you. And that's sometimes where
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: you see in the last five ten minutes where.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: Sometimes teams are just giving it to us. They're just
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: so tired of dealing with it.
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: So it can be as good in the first five
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: minutes as it is in the last five some nights.
- 1:08:46Speaker 6: Thank you again.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: From what you've seen on film. What do you like
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: about michaeleb Blake's and just her what your thoughts on her? Overall? Game?
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: Boy means all three levels.
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: You know, plays really hard, smart, reads defenses extremely well,
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: great in transition, So I mean, you know, she's got
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: the total package and uh, you know again a three
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: level score that again can make the pass as much
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: as make the shot. So she's she's a really really,
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: really tough match up and uh, you know, we'll you know,
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: you you have to try to. And the thing is
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: they have three players, y'all that have taken over one
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: hundred shots in conference, and so you know, our players
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: are very familiar with that, and it really stresses you.
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: Everybody usually has one player that's a good defender. You know,
- 1:09:53Speaker 5: a lot of good teams have two. Not many teams
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: can go three D going, hey we can shut with
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: this kid, this kid, and this kid. And I think
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: that's the challenge, you know for people guarding us, because
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: we have multiple offensive players. You know, the kid at
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: A and M said it the other night in the
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: press room, you got to pick your poison with them
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: because they have a lot of weapons. Well, you know,
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: I think anytime you get into a team like a Vanderbilt,
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: who's got but then you better not take your eye
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: off the other two.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: I mean, they're shooting it at a high level.
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: They're good players, they're obviously smart and heavy, and so
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: you know, it's just a really good team.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: And they're an NCAA tournament team. And I don't think
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: anybody wants.
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: To see a kid that can get fifty seven or
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: fifty three whatever she got that night. I mean, but
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: she's done it all year. I mean in conference alone,
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: twenty seven points a game. That's our average. And then
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: you go eighteen in sixteen, So it's not just her.
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: You got to keep an eye because you know what,
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: eighteen and sixteen can both go for thirty and so
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: you you know, it's really going to put some pressure
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: on our kids to really be focused. I'm talking about
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: all of us. You know, I'm not sure you do
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: it one on one with any of them. I think
- 1:11:21Speaker 5: you have to really be cognizant and try to try
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: to do it with five.
- 1:11:28Speaker 7: Bright Yeah, I think I just wanted to ask you about,
- 1:11:32Speaker 7: you know, Vandy itself. You know, you're you're one of
- 1:11:34Speaker 7: the few coaches that I know that that took over
- 1:11:37Speaker 7: a struggling SEC program and lifted them back into the spotlight,
- 1:11:42Speaker 7: like what Shay has done at Vandy. I mean, what's
- 1:11:47Speaker 7: the secret for her? Is it just sprinkling yukon magic
- 1:11:50Speaker 7: all over the place and it worked?
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: Or what.
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: Do you see in their rise that you either admire
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: or don't like or love. I don't know. Well, as
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: y'all know, the only thing harder than building it is
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: sustaining it. I mean, that's it's really hard.
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: And to build a program in the SEC from the
- 1:12:16Speaker 5: ground up, you know, like we did at Mississippi State,
- 1:12:21Speaker 5: she's doing it now at Vanderbilt. I mean you have
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: to respect and admire the job that she's done, her
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: and her staff.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: And so, you know, I.
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: First of all, I have a lot of respect for
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: and we've had you know, we don't know each other
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: real well. I've only been back in the league, you know,
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: this season. But you know, I know how hard it is,
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: and I know the job she's doing. I mean, they're
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: they're just really good. And you know it's hard to do, y'all,
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: and so you have to you have to admire that.
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: And uh, you know, she seems like, you know, a
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: great part soon when I've had a chance to visit
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: with her and talk with her and at meetings and
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: and so it's hard, you know. But the only thing
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: built harder and building it sustaining it. And I think
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: that's true no matter where you are.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: You know, it's this, y'all heard me say this. We
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: talk about all the time.
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: The standard is a standard, right, and it's you know,
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: for y'all, you're probably going to it's another cliche, it's
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: something else coach says. It's you know, he's got a
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: bunch of T shirts over there that got all that
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: on there and and and part of that's true.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: But here's the thing, y'all, Like.
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: The standard is so different for so many different people,
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: for so many different programs, like it. It's I pick
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: up the newspaper and read about teams and coaches and
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: how they're evaluated in what they consider a great season.
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: And it's so different for everybody, sometimes not even fair,
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: but it is what it is.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: And you know, it's almost comical.
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: But you know, for us, for anyone who lives in
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: the SEC and tries to survive, because that's what you're doing.
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: I mean, you're you're living in the biggest, baddest conference
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: in the country.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: You're living in a.
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: Fish pond full of sharks, and every night can be
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: a dog one bloodpath and so you've got to have
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: that edge, that mentality, and y'all, that's what I'm telling you.
- 1:14:53Speaker 5: It's so it's so hard to keep that with eighteen
- 1:14:57Speaker 5: to twenty two year olds just don't have any idea.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: I mean, you don't have.
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: Any idea what they're doing on campus other than you
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: know they're going to class. They got study all. I
- 1:15:08Speaker 5: got kids that got study all at eight and eight am.
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: They got tutors. Then they go to class. We're trying
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: to get them to eat right, and they come over
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: here and we get them for a couple two three
- 1:15:18Speaker 5: hours try to go through film practice, then they got
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: more studying. I mean, it ain't like we're at some
- 1:15:25Speaker 5: three named directional school that's you just show up and
- 1:15:29Speaker 5: learn by osmosis. It's a hard place to learn, hard
- 1:15:33Speaker 5: place to to you know, it's a great education, but
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: it's really hard, so.
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: It's a it's a challenge.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: So there's just a taste of it there with Vic Shavor,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: the long wards head coach, and we'll hear more from
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: Vic tomorrow on this matchup with the Vanderbilt Commodores and
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: the down the stretch portion of the regular season. All right,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: we have more coming up as we continue here on
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: this Wednesday afternoon, so stay with us here on AM
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: thirteen one hundred the Zone. Tomorrow on the program, Bill
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Sheney's going to join us talk about the new edition
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: with the Spurs, and the Spurs of course play tonight
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: against Philadelphia and then I think turned Charlotte tomorrow, so
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: Bill will join us on the program tomorrow. We'll hear
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: more from Vic Schaeffer on the program tomorrow as well.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: So we'll look forward to bringing you the program tomorrow
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: afternoon with those guests and features and a couple of
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: other things that we'll get to as well, now, a
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: couple other notes I wanted to get to since we
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: were talking about the NBA in the trades like the
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: Mavericks Lakers trade and the Spurs trade. There was more
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: before the trade deadline with the Bucks trading Chris Middleton,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: the former Texas A and m Aggie to Washington. And
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: he was a guy who was really kind of a
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: cornerstone of that of what was built there for that
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Milwaukee Bucks World championship team a few years back. Kyle
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Kuzma will go to Milwaukee in exchange, the Bucks also
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: sending rookie guard A. J. Johnson, the first round draft
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: selection last year and a pick swap to Washington. They
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: also sent Ford Patrick Baldwin junior and second round draft
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: compensation to Milwaukee. So again teams getting into the act
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: here before this thing is done and rolling right up
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: on the trade deadline.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: So yep, you had another NBA note made there.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: And then there's then there's this interesting note from the
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: National Football League Players Association.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: If you're a little bit OCD like me, you probably.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: Are just a little bit off put or let's just
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: say out of balance, not necessarily you know, irritated or
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: anything like that. But just just kind of feel a
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: little bit out of balance with a seventeen game NFL schedule.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: I've been like that ever since they went to it.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: It's just it's odd. It's an odd number, seventeen. It's
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: a prime number. Remember, we all learned about prime numbers
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: in school in math. Prime numbers. It's only that number,
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: you know, that is divisible to itself, to the number one.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: Seventeen is one of those numbers. Well, they've been playing
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: seventeen games, so naturally it's the very logical thing for
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: Texas fans and for not Texas at Cowboys fans. I
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: started to say, excuse me, and Texans fans and NFL
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: fans in general, to say, if you're going to have
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: seventeen games, why not just go ahead and make it
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: eighteen like they do in the Canadian Football League. Go
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: ahead and play eighteen, get rid of one more of
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: those preseason exhibition games.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: Cut it down to two. You'd have nice round numbers.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: Two preseason games.
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: Every team can play one at home, one on the road,
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: and then you play eighteen games, and you'd get back
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: to a balance schedule, at least pretty close to a
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: balance schedule. Right, made sense, and Roger Goodell, the commissioner
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: in the NFL, was having conversations with the NFL Players
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: Association about it. So in a week and I mentioned
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: this yesterday on the program, where there's a lot of
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: conversation that goes on in news conferences and things of
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: that nature during Super Bowl week. So like Godal's already
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: had one news conference, he'll have his big State of
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: the NFL address coming up on Friday. Players Association they
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: have their big news conference. Then if you've ever been
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: on radio row for the Super Bowl, it's just this
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: one continuous cavalcade of current and former NFL players representing
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: a product or service, and they'll hop on with you
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: for a few minutes if you let them, you know,
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: you know, push their product or service on the air.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: So it's kind of a trade off on that deal
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: they're doing that you're getting it for the interview. It's
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: that sort of thing. They hop on and they get
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: a chance to mention who they're representing and so on
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: and so forth. All right, So anyway, all of this
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: stuff happens during the course of the week, and so
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: the media never ever has as much access to the
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: commissioner of the National Football League as they do this week.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: The media never has as much access to the players
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: Association as they do this week Super Bowl week.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: So quick show of hands out there.
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: If you know who the executive director of the NFL
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: Players Association is, put your hands down.
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: I know you don't know. It's Lloyd Howel Junior.
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: Right, Okay, this whole thing about the eighteen games makes
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: perfect sense to you and me. Right, eighteen games makes sense.
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: Nice round even numbers. Get back on more of a
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: balance schedule.
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: Lloyd Howell Junior pushed back today against Roger Goodell's statement
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: that safety data favors expanding the regular season. Quote, Frankly,
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: we're not sure how he's reaching that conclusion based on
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: the data we've been given access to.
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: He had his news conference today.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: Howell was asked about the nflpa's current stance on an
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: eighteen game season, two days after Goodell had a news
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: conference where Godell said that eighteen regular season games and
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: two preseason games might be a possibility, citing safety data
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: that put concussions at a historically low level during twenty
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: twenty four. But how came back said players are against
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: another regular season expansion after expanding the seventeen games in
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: twenty twenty one quote, no one wants to play an
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: eighteenth game. No One. Seventeen games is already for many
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: of the guys too long. Seventeen games is also so
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: lengthy that you're still dealing with injuries going in the
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: next season, So there are a variety of issues that
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: hang off of the length of the season before any
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: formal negotiations. Howl and Gadell both said this week that
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: any discussions regarding eighteen games has been informal. The current
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: collective Bargaining Agreement, which was ratified in twenty twenty, expires
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: after twenty thirty. The length of the season is written
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: into the CBA, so it would have to be voted
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: on and agreed to by both the owners and the players,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: and Howell said any commentary outside of a former negotiation
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: is just commentary.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: It's a player's decision to what they will agree to
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: do or not.
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: Hou said several issues would have to be addressed before
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: any true negotiations could be open into expanding the season.
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: He cited the number of bye weeks, roster.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: Size, practice squad size, the length of the offseason, and
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: the amount of international games played, which the CBA currently
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: caps at ten. He said, when you talk about eighteen games,
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: what does the international composition look like at where there's
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: evidence that they would like us to go as far
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: away as Australia, in Middle East, India, you name it.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: They truly want to look at the international aspect of
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: the game. So how does that fit into eighteen games?
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: We could fit in in eighteen games. What I'm not
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: understanding is if you're dumping a preseason game to do it.
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: It's one last game.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: And I get it.
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: There are teams that don't allow their starters even to
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: play a snap of the preseason. The team I root for,
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: the Rams, Sean McVay, his starters never play in the preseason.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: So you're saying it's apples and oranges. You may pull
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: out a preseason game and go to eighteen regular season
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: games in two preseason, but that's still the wear and
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: tear on the players because they're not even playing in
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: just about all of those preseason games anyway. Well, everything
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: revolves around money, so that's what it would come back
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: to to see if they would go to But it's
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: just me. I'm thrown off a little bit by the
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: odd number of games of seventeen. You know, I think
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: eighteen would make sense with two preseason games. You play
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: two preseason games and you can get after it. But
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: the Players Association is not seeing it that way. All right,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: We will be back to wrap up today's edition of
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: the program here on AM thirteen under the Zone
