Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Always love having my friend Bomani Jones on, the right
- 0:27Speaker 2: time with Bomani Jones, wherever you get your podcasts.
- 0:30Speaker 1: He's the best doing it right now. New studios I saw, Bomani.
- 0:33Speaker 1: They look nice. How about that? Yeah, man.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Stepping up a little bit. The problem is now I
- 0:37Speaker 3: got to put on pants to go to work. You know,
- 0:42Speaker 3: that hasn't been a full-on requirement in.
- 0:45Speaker 4: A few years, but here we are. Right.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Have you made the drive yet to your new studios? Oh, no,
- 0:51Speaker 2: there is a drive. I do not make it.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Now, there is, because I don't own a car, so
- 0:57Speaker 3: I couldn't make the drive, even if it came down
- 0:58Speaker 3: to it.
- 0:59Speaker 4: But this traffic, this New York traffic thing, hey, man,
- 1:01Speaker 4: it's kind of whack.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Yes, when you have to leave your apartment.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Oh, my God, yeah. Like, what's up with this?
- 1:08Speaker 1: I'm excited for you, man. It looks fantastic.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I'm sorry you have to put pants on, and I'm
- 1:13Speaker 2: sorry you have to deal with traffic.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I have to be like regular people so bad at
- 1:18Speaker 3: this point. I'm going to learn to not complain about it,
- 1:21Speaker 3: but as of now, it's still new.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yes, you have worked very hard your entire life to
- 1:25Speaker 2: not be a regular person.
- 1:27Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying. Goals, you
- 1:30Speaker 4: know what I'm saying?
- 1:31Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I have a music question for you that I'll get
- 1:35Speaker 2: to towards the end here.
- 1:37Speaker 1: But I am interested in your thoughts here. It's funny.
- 1:39Speaker 2: The more things change, the more they stay the same.
- 1:42Speaker 2: And in college football, it's never been more true than
- 1:45Speaker 2: this weekend. The whole sport is changing.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yet Alabama and Georgia are at the center of the
- 1:51Speaker 1: college football universe.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Yeah, man, this is it is so interesting because this
- 1:56Speaker 3: is not a historical rivalry. which doesn't really sound like
- 2:00Speaker 3: it makes a bunch of sense. They're right across from
- 2:02Speaker 3: each other on the border, with the state line and everything.
- 2:05Speaker 3: But no, this isn't a game. This game has been
- 2:07Speaker 3: played more frequently recently because they both made the SEC
- 2:10Speaker 3: championship game, which has kind of increased how often they played.
- 2:12Speaker 3: They had the game in the national championship game that
- 2:15Speaker 3: one year. But this isn't Georgia-Auburn. This isn't Alabama-Tennessee. This
- 2:20Speaker 3: isn't one they're going to play every year. But now
- 2:22Speaker 3: they're both excellent. which also hasn't really been a constant thing.
- 2:26Speaker 3: And now Keelan Russell is a monster, man. Like that's
- 2:30Speaker 3: the one to watch for all of this. I mean,
- 2:32Speaker 3: you get this year, you got next year before that
- 2:34Speaker 3: guy's out of there.
- 2:35Speaker 1: But for now, it's a show. Yeah.
- 2:38Speaker 2: It's so funny because he was not one of the
- 2:40Speaker 2: quarterbacks that everyone was talking about headed into the season.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And some of the quarterbacks like Mateer that people were
- 2:45Speaker 2: talking about aren't any good.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I don't know who to trust anymore, Bomani.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I mean, think about it this way.
- 2:50Speaker 3: And I figured we'll probably Texas, Oklahoma will come up
- 2:53Speaker 3: a little bit later.
- 2:53Speaker 4: So I may be.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Jumping the gun a little bit, but if you say
- 2:57Speaker 3: that arch Manning is the fourth best quarterback in the sec,
- 3:01Speaker 3: you might be being very kind to him, but you're
- 3:03Speaker 3: also not insulting him. Chambliss Taylor and Russell, those three
- 3:09Speaker 3: at the top of the conference is insane.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Agreed.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:14Speaker 2: If you had the number one pick in the draft
- 3:16Speaker 2: and it was your pick to make and yours alone,
- 3:18Speaker 2: Would you feel confident taking Arch Manning?
- 3:20Speaker 1: I wouldn't.
- 3:21Speaker 3: No, I would take Jeremiah Smith before I took Arch Manning.
- 3:24Speaker 3: I mean, maybe if I just desperately, desperately needed a quarterback.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And I can't go– the question with Chambliss is obviously
- 3:31Speaker 3: going to be size, right?
- 3:32Speaker 4: Russell's not going to be in that draft.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Somebody– I don't think anybody should be surprised if Jeremiah
- 3:37Speaker 3: Smith's the number one pick in the draft, even after
- 3:40Speaker 3: what happened with Harrison and him not– well, the guy
- 3:44Speaker 3: they played at Ohio State. Even without him turning out
- 3:47Speaker 3: to be– As excellent as people expected. Smith looks like
- 3:51Speaker 3: one of the three best college receivers I've ever seen.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Bomani, we wanted to get your take on this from
- 3:57Speaker 5: last week. The hypothetical we had was your rival wins
- 4:00Speaker 5: four Super Bowls in a row, but you're guaranteed a
- 4:03Speaker 5: Super Bowl in that fifth year. Would either the Saints
- 4:06Speaker 5: and Falcons fan bases take that?
- 4:08Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Hmm, hmm, hmm.
- 4:11Speaker 1: It's a great question. It really is.
- 4:13Speaker 3: So honestly, I think that if you still root for
- 4:17Speaker 3: the Falcons, you should take a Super Bowl however it comes. Right.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And I would also make the argument that from back
- 4:24Speaker 3: when I rooted for the Falcons, and in fact, the
- 4:27Speaker 3: Saints won that Super Bowl after I stopped rooting for
- 4:29Speaker 3: the Falcons, but it might as well be 10 Super Bowls.
- 4:33Speaker 4: I hate it that much. I loathe it that much.
- 4:36Speaker 3: The additional Super Bowls aren't going to change anything about
- 4:39Speaker 3: how I feel about them The one Super Bowl would
- 4:41Speaker 3: change a lot about how I felt about life if
- 4:44Speaker 3: I was still in that situation. I love the fact
- 4:46Speaker 3: that people understand, like, how real that Saints-Falcons loathing truly is.
- 4:52Speaker 4: It's, it's, oh my God. I don't root for the
- 4:55Speaker 4: Falcons anymore.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I hate it.
- 4:57Speaker 4: I hate the Saints. I hate them so much.
- 5:03Speaker 1: How cool was.
- 5:05Speaker 4: It they blocked that kick on the first game back?
- 5:08Speaker 4: I didn't think it was cool at all. I didn't
- 5:14Speaker 4: enjoy that.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I was going to ask you if any part of
- 5:18Speaker 2: you found yourself rooting.
- 5:19Speaker 1: For the Saints the other night.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Under no circumstance whatsoever. Maybe if they was playing against Duke. Right.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 5:29Speaker 4: I'd root for them against Duke. No, let me be clear.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I'd root for them against Duke.
- 5:32Speaker 1: How about Mississippi?
- 5:37Speaker 4: Probably. Probably.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Duke, I might buy some Saints gear if they was
- 5:43Speaker 3: playing against Duke.
- 5:44Speaker 5: Yep.
- 5:45Speaker 1: It's funny how good the Falcons look with a competent quarterback.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And that's really all he had to do was be
- 5:51Speaker 3: competent because I didn't think he looked especially good. I'm
- 5:53Speaker 3: not sold on Pennix at all. But they've got the
- 5:56Speaker 3: best running back prospect post-Adrian Peterson.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I'm just saying that to be safe. Bijan is Bijan's
- 6:02Speaker 2: all-time level talent. All those picks we thought were a
- 6:05Speaker 2: little strange. We thought they drafted Kyle Pitts a little
- 6:08Speaker 2: higher than they should. Maybe you thought they drafted Drake
- 6:10Speaker 2: London higher than they should. All those guys have panned out.
- 6:12Speaker 2: They just need a reasonable quarterback.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Quarterback and if pennants can be that i mean i
- 6:18Speaker 3: think they can win that they are in a division
- 6:21Speaker 3: that somebody has to win it's not going to be
- 6:23Speaker 3: tampa bay i think todd bowles is probably going to
- 6:25Speaker 3: get fired on friday um i am still not sure
- 6:29Speaker 3: about the bryce young thing but we'll see but it's
- 6:32Speaker 3: a very winnable division for all parties involved.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I just figured no one cared in tampa and todd
- 6:37Speaker 2: bowles would never be fired i mean so but you
- 6:39Speaker 2: have him being fired.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Yeah Let me tell you something.
- 6:42Speaker 3: If they go 0-5 and the fifth loss is on
- 6:44Speaker 3: national television and the Cowboys put up 30, 40 points,
- 6:47Speaker 3: which is possible, then getting embarrassed on national TV is
- 6:51Speaker 3: the thing that does the thing.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Bomani, what do you make of the situation in Tennessee
- 7:07Speaker 5: where it feels like the Tennessee media has just targeted
- 7:10Speaker 5: Cam Ward and been like, we hate this guy?
- 7:14Speaker 3: Man, I made that point, and I had a member
- 7:19Speaker 3: of the Titans media reach out to me, furious that
- 7:23Speaker 3: I did not inquire with them first about what's going
- 7:26Speaker 3: on because they felt as though I was implying that,
- 7:30Speaker 3: or he felt as though I was implying that the
- 7:33Speaker 3: front office had greenlit some of this stuff with Cam Ward.
- 7:38Speaker 3: My point was and remains not that they told you
- 7:42Speaker 3: guys to do it, but you wouldn't do it unless
- 7:46Speaker 3: somebody was telling you things that made you feel like.
- 7:49Speaker 4: This was an appropriate course of action, right?
- 7:51Speaker 3: Whatever you're hearing from the team is not good for
- 7:54Speaker 3: you to feel like you, I've just never seen anybody
- 7:58Speaker 3: talk to a starting quarterback like this in press availability
- 8:00Speaker 3: ever or whatever that weird thing was that they just had.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I've just literally never seen anything like it. And I
- 8:10Speaker 3: don't think he's playing well. I don't think anybody can
- 8:16Speaker 3: play well under the circumstances. I think that is a
- 8:18Speaker 3: sad sack outfit that they've got there. I think I'm
- 8:21Speaker 3: watching Bryce Young now be a good quarterback after he
- 8:23Speaker 3: looked awful his first year. I'm seeing Jared Goff now
- 8:27Speaker 3: in his 11th year in the NFL after being awful
- 8:31Speaker 3: his first year, like historically awful.
- 8:33Speaker 4: In his first year.
- 8:34Speaker 3: None of this means that Cam Ward can't figure out
- 8:37Speaker 3: a way to get it together, right? Gino Smith is
- 8:39Speaker 3: still in the NFL, for example, right? None of this
- 8:41Speaker 3: means that he can't get it right. But damn, that
- 8:45Speaker 3: whole situation just feels bad.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:48Speaker 3: And I mean, they can keep, you know, call themselves
- 8:51Speaker 3: asking hard questions, but the guy that hit me up,
- 8:54Speaker 3: the question I would have for him is, how come
- 8:55Speaker 3: you ain't never asked nobody no hard questions like this before?
- 8:57Speaker 2: Because it sounds like it's new behavior. I mean, that's
- 9:01Speaker 2: just what it seems like. What does this person want?
- 9:03Speaker 2: He wants you to run your takes by him before
- 9:05Speaker 2: you put him out there?
- 9:06Speaker 1: I mean.
- 9:07Speaker 4: That was the vibe that I got.
- 9:10Speaker 3: We wound up like talking it out because I was like, look,
- 9:12Speaker 3: if I was misunderstood in what I said, then that's
- 9:15Speaker 3: my fault.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Like I got to own that, you know?
- 9:18Speaker 3: So I didn't get to, I didn't, I didn't, I
- 9:20Speaker 3: didn't come back with like snappy comebacks with him because
- 9:23Speaker 3: I was starting with the, this is what I could
- 9:26Speaker 3: do first. But he says to me, instead of suggesting
- 9:30Speaker 3: that I've been green lit by Titans coaches and management,
- 9:32Speaker 3: why not do some reporting? send a d text or
- 9:37Speaker 3: dm or pick up the phone and my simple point
- 9:43Speaker 3: was i ain't never seen nothing like this before like
- 9:45Speaker 3: i didn't i didn't.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Think i needed to report this.
- 9:47Speaker 6: Out but what happened was the blogs picked it up
- 9:51Speaker 6: yes and now they feel like they under attack right
- 9:54Speaker 6: and that ain't got to do with me yes i
- 9:56Speaker 6: rate i said what.
- 9:57Speaker 4: I thought was a reason i i.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Think everything i said there was perfectly reasonable and all
- 10:01Speaker 3: of us who have been doing this job for a
- 10:02Speaker 3: long time right but if it doesn't hit a blog
- 10:05Speaker 3: he doesn't call you right yes probably not probably not
- 10:09Speaker 3: i i i held back i helped i should have
- 10:14Speaker 3: been more clear in what i was saying That's where
- 10:19Speaker 3: we land on.
- 10:20Speaker 4: I should have been more clear.
- 10:23Speaker 1: You're taking accountability, really. I don't think you should. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: don't think you should. I defend you. How about that?
- 10:29Speaker 4: Yeah, but you know what, though?
- 10:30Speaker 3: That's the thing about it, man. When you know that
- 10:32Speaker 3: you got your part, take your part, then go from there.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Bomani, before I get to my question about music for you,
- 10:39Speaker 2: I am wondering, how should Browns feel? And it's almost
- 10:43Speaker 2: a ridiculous topic. How should Browns fans feel? about rooting
- 10:47Speaker 2: for their team who's off to a 3-1 start. They
- 10:49Speaker 2: feel great. They just don't like the guy who's leading
- 10:52Speaker 2: their team on the field.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Yeah, let me tell you this. They seem to like
- 10:56Speaker 4: them a lot more now.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Right? Crazy.
- 10:59Speaker 4: They like them a lot more at 3-1.
- 11:00Speaker 6: Yes.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Everybody needs to be honest about that part. I was
- 11:05Speaker 3: watching the end of that last game. It was rocking
- 11:07Speaker 3: in there. Ain't nobody look conflicted. Right. Ain't nobody like, like,
- 11:10Speaker 3: and by the way, he's not the only guy there
- 11:12Speaker 3: for the, for the conflict.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Right.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Like, uh, the running back, there's conflict to be had there.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Um, one of the, one of the dudes that got
- 11:21Speaker 4: hurt in the game, he had to.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Make like, they got other guys that are causes for conflict.
- 11:26Speaker 3: One of them is just a bit more prominent. Just
- 11:30Speaker 3: about everybody's rooting for somebody that creates some level of conflict.
- 11:34Speaker 3: If you're happy when the Browns win, you're going to
- 11:38Speaker 3: be happy when the Browns win. But the part that
- 11:40Speaker 3: everybody needs to be honest about is when they're not
- 11:43Speaker 3: going to be happy with him, it's going to be
- 11:44Speaker 3: because he doesn't play well. And if he plays well,
- 11:47Speaker 3: they'll find a way to push through.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Well, Monty, one of the most bizarre situations in the
- 11:51Speaker 5: NFL this season has been the roller coaster of Drake May,
- 11:55Speaker 5: where the first couple weeks he looked like he had
- 11:58Speaker 5: never played the quarterback position before he's eligible for a
- 12:02Speaker 5: contract extension in the 2027 offseason how would you be
- 12:06Speaker 5: handling this drake may situation if you were the patriots.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Unless he plays much better there's not going to be
- 12:12Speaker 3: an extension he's going to be in a similar place
- 12:15Speaker 3: as cj shroud wow um where i'm not sure who
- 12:18Speaker 3: the better quarterback is that they're going to get the
- 12:19Speaker 3: cj shroud but you see he doesn't have an extension
- 12:21Speaker 3: but he doesn't have an extension because i'm sure the
- 12:23Speaker 3: texans are willing to extend them at a price that
- 12:25Speaker 3: David Mulgetta was not willing to take as his.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Agent, Stroud's agent. I think they're going to wind up
- 12:32Speaker 4: in a similar place.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Like, something's not all the way right there. Now, if
- 12:36Speaker 3: he plays for the rest of the year, like he
- 12:38Speaker 3: played in the second half against Buffalo, then, yeah, certainly,
- 12:41Speaker 3: there will be an extension. But it can be like
- 12:46Speaker 3: you have a really good year, too, and never be
- 12:48Speaker 3: that good again. Like, that sort of thing happens. But
- 12:51Speaker 3: then the counterargument is, so who else are they going
- 12:53Speaker 3: to get?
- 12:54Speaker 6: Right.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Who's the other person they're going to go get to
- 12:57Speaker 3: play quarterback? That's a fair question to ask. But are
- 13:00Speaker 3: they going to feel good about sending $ 50 million a
- 13:02Speaker 3: year into him, given what he's looked like the last
- 13:04Speaker 3: seven or eight games that he played?
- 13:06Speaker 1: Hell no.
- 13:06Speaker 6: Nope.
- 13:07Speaker 2: The right time with Bomani Jones, wherever you get your podcast,
- 13:11Speaker 2: on the way out here. And I called you about this,
- 13:14Speaker 2: or I texted you about this, and I'm still conflicted
- 13:17Speaker 2: and confused.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I went to a– you know I love the Grateful Dead.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Yes, I do.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Yep, my favorite band. I went to a Dead &
- 13:24Speaker 2: Company show, Fenway Park, and I'll be honest with you, Bomani,
- 13:27Speaker 2: and the audience, I was on a ton of mushrooms.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And so they played Terrapin Station, which is one of
- 13:33Speaker 2: my favorite songs. And I thought to myself at the time,
- 13:37Speaker 2: that is the best version of Terrapin Station that I've
- 13:40Speaker 2: ever heard.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Now, this is not the original band, Dead & Company.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Jerry Garcia has passed away, and John Mayer has taken
- 13:47Speaker 2: over here, and I'm conflicted.
- 13:49Speaker 1: So I went back.
- 13:51Speaker 2: After the show, because again, I was hopped up on
- 13:54Speaker 2: a ton of mushrooms and I just wanted to hear
- 13:57Speaker 2: it again on Spotify. And so I went back to
- 13:59Speaker 2: that concert. I listened to it and it was still
- 14:01Speaker 2: the best version of Terrapin Station that I've ever heard.
- 14:04Speaker 2: And I'm conflicted because I'm not certain if it's not
- 14:08Speaker 2: the original band, you could say a version of their
- 14:10Speaker 2: song is better.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Than the original version of the song. What do you think?
- 14:14Speaker 4: Ah, yeah, you can, right?
- 14:16Speaker 3: And I say that you can because a cover version
- 14:20Speaker 3: of a song can be better than the original version
- 14:22Speaker 3: of the song was.
- 14:23Speaker 4: These things happen. You know what I mean? So I
- 14:25Speaker 4: think you should feel okay. I think you should.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Feel cool about where you've landed in this because I
- 14:32Speaker 3: understand your conflict.
- 14:33Speaker 4: I know why you might be a little bit torn.
- 14:35Speaker 1: It's his music.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Yep, it's what it is. Is it as good or not?
- 14:40Speaker 4: There you go.
- 14:40Speaker 3: All right.
- 14:41Speaker 1: So I'm good. You're telling me I'm good. Don't think
- 14:43Speaker 1: too much.
- 14:43Speaker 3: You're all good. The big thing I'm telling you is
- 14:46Speaker 3: don't think too much.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I know, but I feel like I'm cheating on Jerry Garcia.
- 14:49Speaker 1: That's what I feel like.
- 14:50Speaker 4: I understand that.
- 14:51Speaker 3: But he's been dead for 30 years, literally 30 years.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Bomani, how do you feel about people listening back to concerts?
- 14:59Speaker 5: I've never understood that appeal on Spotify.
- 15:01Speaker 1: I was just making sure it was what I thought
- 15:03Speaker 1: it was.
- 15:03Speaker 4: I mean, it's not any different than listening to a
- 15:05Speaker 4: live album.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Thank you.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Yeah. Just not for me, I guess.
- 15:08Speaker 3: I don't know. I mean, like, so what do you
- 15:10Speaker 3: think about like watching concerts?
- 15:12Speaker 4: Out in general on the concert experience.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 15:15Speaker 4: The right concert. Oh, man, man, man, man, man, man, man.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Especially in the way the Stu guys described the experience.
- 15:22Speaker 4: It can be great.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Yes. In the comfort of your own home.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Yes.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Yes.
- 15:26Speaker 3: I love watching old concerts on YouTube. It's a fascinating
