- 0:31this dive and walking through the Gospel of John series.
- 0:35We're going to continue today. We are going to be in chapter 1
- 0:39still, but we're going to be in verses 14 through 18 today.
- 0:42So if you'd like to read along with your Bible you want to
- 0:45follow on the screen, I'm going to have it right here below.
- 0:47And again, I'm reading through the end Lt. translation.
- 0:52But let's get straight to it. Verse 14 starts like this.
- 0:55So the word became human. So remember the word Jesus
- 0:59became human and made his home among us.
- 1:03He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness.
- 1:06And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father's one and
- 1:10only Son. Verse 15 John testified about
- 1:13him when he shouted to the crowds, This is the one I was
- 1:16talking about when I said, someone is coming after me who
- 1:20is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.
- 1:26Verse 16 From his abundance we have all received one gracious
- 1:30blessing after another. Verse 17 For the law was given
- 1:34through Moses, but God's unfailing love and faithfulness
- 1:38came through Jesus Christ. Verse 18, No one has ever seen
- 1:42God, but the unique one who is himself.
- 1:46God is near to the Father's heart.
- 1:49He has revealed God to us. Let's go.
- 1:54So John continuing to make his point as we talked about in week
- 1:591, Matthew, Mark and Luke being the synoptic gospels being
- 2:02focusing on what Jesus did, what Jesus said, but John, the Gospel
- 2:07of John being the focus of who Jesus is.
- 2:10So again, we read that word with a capital W word describing
- 2:16Jesus as the logos, the power that brought everything into
- 2:21order, that created all things. As we discussed in week one,
- 2:26that Jesus is the one who got created through, created for,
- 2:30created everything. Jesus is the one that brought
- 2:33the chaos into order, that he's the one that created you and me.
- 2:37He's the one that created everything we see.
- 2:39And so John again starts in verse 14.
- 2:42So the word Jesus became human and made his home among us a
- 2:47manual, which means God with us. That's who Jesus was God with
- 2:52us. He made his home alongside us on
- 2:55this earth. He was full of unfailing love
- 2:58and faithfulness and we have seen his glory, the glory of the
- 3:01Father's one and only Son. I love this because again, John
- 3:07making this point and this verse, this is one verse, but it
- 3:09unpacks so much deep theological truth in it that again we're
- 3:15reminded that Jesus is God, that he is the word of God coming to
- 3:20be flesh with us, that Jesus is God, that he was fully human,
- 3:25but also fully God, that he made his home among us.
- 3:30But I love if you read in that second sentence of this verse,
- 3:34it says he was full of unfailing love and faithfulness.
- 3:38And that's interesting because another point as to why people
- 3:41try to argue against Jesus's divinity in Exodus 34 chapter 6,
- 3:48when Yahweh God meets Moses on Mount Sinai, it says in verse 6
- 3:55the Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out Yahweh the
- 4:00Lord, the God of compassion and mercy.
- 4:04I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and
- 4:09faithfulness. This is the text that everyone
- 4:13goes back to when God gives us an answer to who he is that
- 4:19right here God is meeting Moses on the Mount Sinai, but he's
- 4:23describing to Moses and to us who he is, his character, what
- 4:29he's about. We get to know who God is and
- 4:33This is why it's incredible because in verse 6, he's
- 4:36describing his characteristics and he says that the that I
- 4:41Yahweh, the Lord, the God of compassion and mercy, that God
- 4:45is slow to anger, that he's filled with unfailing love and
- 4:49faithfulness. Verse 7, it goes on.
- 4:51I lavish unfailing love to 1000 generations.
- 4:54I forgive iniquity, rebellion and sin, but I do not excuse the
- 4:57guilty. I lay the sins of the parents
- 5:00upon their children and grandchildren.
- 5:02The entire family is affected, even children in the 3rd and 4th
- 5:06generation. So we have this God describing
- 5:09who he is, that he's compassionate, that he's
- 5:11merciful, that he's slow to anger, that that description,
- 5:14that he's got wide nostrils, that it takes him a while to get
- 5:18angry, that he's patient, that he's filled with unfailing love
- 5:22and faithfulness. That he forgives us, He forgives
- 5:25generations, he forgives our sin.
- 5:28And but the reality is because he's a good God and he's a just
- 5:33judge, he does not let the guilty go unpunished.
- 5:37And so we read in, in Exodus 34, six that God describes to us who
- 5:42he is. And it's interesting because
- 5:44when we go back now and jump back to John chapter one, verse
- 5:4714, what wording does John use to describe Jesus?
- 5:52That Jesus was what? Full of unfailing love and
- 5:56faithfulness. The same verbiage that's used
- 5:59that God uses to describe himself, John is using to
- 6:02describe Jesus. Because Jesus is God in flesh.
- 6:07Jesus is God. The Word became human and made
- 6:11his home among us, and he was full of unfailing love and
- 6:14faithfulness, just like God in heaven.
- 6:18And so I love that John continues to unpack this truth
- 6:22in chapter one, that Jesus is not just a prophet or an
- 6:25ordinary man or a man that did these pretty cool things.
- 6:28No, he is God in flesh dwelling among us.
- 6:32But it's pretty incredible when you think about that, that the
- 6:36word God became human and made his home among us, That Jesus
- 6:41lived the life that you and I live as a human being in
- 6:45Philippians Chapter 2 made me think about this passage in
- 6:48Philippians chapter 2, verse 6, it starts, it says though he was
- 6:52God Jesus, he did not think of equality with God as something
- 6:56to cling to. Verse 7.
- 6:58Instead, he gave up his divine privileges.
- 7:01He took the humble position position of a slave and was born
- 7:06as a human being. When he appeared in human form,
- 7:10verse 8, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a
- 7:14criminal's death on a cross. So we have this powerful truth
- 7:18that Paul reiterates in his letter to the church in
- 7:21Philippi. He says Jesus, though he was
- 7:24God, he did not think of equality with God as something
- 7:27to cling to, that he gave up his divine privileges.
- 7:31He left heaven to come down to dwell among us.
- 7:36As John just said, that he took the humble position of a slave
- 7:40and was born as a human being. That God is not this distant God
- 7:46or dictator that he is near. That he came to be with us.
- 7:51That God came to earth, to his creation, to the people that he
- 7:55created and loves and wants a relationship with.
- 7:58That he came in human form to show us the way to him, which is
- 8:03through faith in Jesus. And that's incredible when we
- 8:07think about that. Sit on that a little bit today.
- 8:10That God sent his one and only Son so that whoever will believe
- 8:16in him will not perish but have eternal life.
- 8:19That's how much God loved the world.
- 8:22For God so loved the world that he sent Jesus to die a death
- 8:27that you and I deserve for our sins, so that anyone who puts
- 8:31their faith in his life, death and resurrection, that they will
- 8:34have eternal life and be made right again with God and have a
- 8:38relationship with our heavenly Father.
- 8:40That's an incredible truth that you need to let lavish over you
- 8:44today. But I also love in Hebrews 4, it
- 8:48kind of points this point out again that God came to dwell
- 8:52among us, Emmanuel, God with us. Chapter 4 of Hebrews verse 15,
- 8:57it says this high priest, which is Jesus of ours, understands
- 9:01our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet
- 9:07He did not sin. I mean, that's incredible.
- 9:11The God who created us, the God of the cosmos, the God of this
- 9:14world who created everything in it, you and I included, He
- 9:19understands our weaknesses. He understands what we go
- 9:24through. He gets it.
- 9:26It's not like you're struggling with whatever you are, not like
- 9:29you're going through grief. Not that you're going through
- 9:30loss or or confusion or hurt or pain, whatever it may be,
- 9:34whatever season you're in, God gets it.
- 9:38Jesus lived it as fully human, but also still fully God.
- 9:43That he's not just distant from you.
- 9:45The Lord is near to you. He understands our weaknesses.
- 9:50He gets you and He gets me. That's something that brings me
- 9:55comfort that when I'm in a season of feeling frustrated or
- 9:58seasons that I've had when I've been frustrated with God, like
- 10:01why is this happening? Why are you allowing this?
- 10:04Going after him in a real and genuine way, but really
- 10:07wrestling through that. Why am I experiencing these
- 10:10things that I'm experiencing? Jesus is sitting there going.
- 10:14I understand. I get it.
- 10:17I faced all the same things and testings that you do.
- 10:20That I experienced loss, I experienced pain, I experienced
- 10:24hurt. But guess what?
- 10:27I did not sin. And so now you can find victory
- 10:30through me. That we are more than conquerors
- 10:33through Christ because Jesus has the victory.
- 10:37Jesus has defeated death and sin.
- 10:39That now we put our faith in Him.
- 10:40We have Him dwelling in us 'cause He came to dwell among
- 10:44us. That God is with us always until
- 10:47the end of age, as Jesus tells us He will be.
- 10:50But we have a God who gets it, that understands our weaknesses,
- 10:53that isn't just far way up in heaven and just chilling on his
- 10:57throne and not really caring and not really understanding.
- 11:00No, He cares more than anyone and anything else.
- 11:03And He gets what you're going through and He sees you and He
- 11:06hears you and He loves you and He wants to meet you right where
- 11:11you're at because He understands.
- 11:13That's an amazing and powerful truth, and we need to never take
- 11:17that for granted. But I love that John continues
- 11:21on focusing on how we have seen his glory, the glory of the
- 11:25Father's one and only Son. That Jesus, again, is the
- 11:30visible image of the invisible God.
- 11:32As Colossians 115 puts it, Jesus is God.
- 11:36We experience God through Jesus, that Jesus came and was God
- 11:41among us. That when you read about Jesus
- 11:43and the Gospels, you're learning about who God is because they
- 11:46are one. As John 17 will say, Jesus prays
- 11:49that the Father and him are one. And so when we see Jesus, we see
- 11:54God, that Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God, our
- 11:59heavenly Father. And so, as John is saying, we've
- 12:03seen his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son.
- 12:06They've seen it because they've seen Jesus.
- 12:08And that's incredible. Well, John testifies this truth
- 12:12again, guys, what are you doing about this truth in your life?
- 12:16If you've come to find faith in Jesus, that you know him, that
- 12:19you follow him, that you have faith in him, what are you doing
- 12:22about it? Are you testifying about that
- 12:24truth in your life? Are you telling others?
- 12:26Are you shouting to the crowds as John did?
- 12:29This is the one I was talking about.
- 12:32Are you in your workplaces saying this is who I'm talking
- 12:35about Jesus? The one that I know, the one who
- 12:37has radically changed me, the one who loves me, the one who's
- 12:41created you and me, the one who wants a relationship with you,
- 12:44the one who sent his son to die death that you deserve.
- 12:47But three days later he rose from the grave, and now he's
- 12:50sitting at the right hand throne of God.
- 12:51And if you put your faith in Jesus, you will find eternal
- 12:54life in the next life. But you'll find life to the full
- 12:58in this life because you will be living in purpose.
- 13:01Because the God who created you with purpose now lives in you.
- 13:05Are you testifying about Jesus to others?
- 13:07Are you excited to let people know about the God that you know
- 13:11that loves you? I, I hope I say this all the
- 13:14time. I hope you are loving people so
- 13:17well that they can't help but wonder who loves you.
- 13:20Go out and love this world. Go out and love those who don't
- 13:22know Jesus so they can't help but wonder who loves you and who
- 13:26lives inside of you. Preach Jesus.
- 13:29Tell others about Jesus. Always have a reason for the
- 13:33hope that you have. Testify about Him because it's
- 13:37the power of a God within you who can reach those who don't
- 13:40know Him yet. But are you willing to
- 13:42participate in the Great Commission?
- 13:44Are you gonna continue to be a spectator on the sidelines?
- 13:49John goes on to say from his abundance in verse 16, we have
- 13:54all received one gracious blessing after another.
- 13:58Or as the original Greek texts saying, receive the grace of
- 14:04Christ rather than the grace of the law, that this is grace upon
- 14:08grace. I love In Ephesians chapter 3
- 14:11verse 16, Paul says, I pray that from his glorious unlimited
- 14:16resources, he will empower you with inner strength through his
- 14:19Spirit. God has unlimited resources,
- 14:24unlimited resources of grace. That his grace is a bucket full
- 14:28that continues to not run out, that's over and lavished over
- 14:32your life. That God's grace will never ever
- 14:35run out. That his mercies are fresh in
- 14:37the morning as the Scripture says.
- 14:39That when we wake up in the morning, God's grace is over our
- 14:42life and He continues to pour it over our lives and it will never
- 14:45run out because God has unlimited resources in His
- 14:49abundance. We receive His gracious
- 14:52blessings after another. Knowing Jesus, living in God's
- 14:56favor, that is God's grace over your life.
- 15:00That's an incredible thing. Give him praise right now and
- 15:03say Jesus, thank you for your unlimited resources over my life
- 15:07'cause I know I am incredibly grateful for it because I am
- 15:11unworthy of it. But He is in verse 17.
- 15:15For the law was given through Moses, but God's again,
- 15:17unfailing love and faithfulness came through who?
- 15:21Jesus Christ, not through Moses, but God's unfailing love and
- 15:26faithfulness came through Jesus, not the law through Jesus.
- 15:31Faith in Jesus equals everything.
- 15:35But when we try to say faith in Jesus plus something, it's
- 15:39nothing. It's faith in Christ alone.
- 15:42For we are saved by grace through faith.
- 15:45Ephesians 28. It's by what Jesus has
- 15:48accomplished. The law was given through Moses,
- 15:51but God's unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus
- 15:55Christ. Our salvation comes through
- 15:57Jesus Christ. Our purpose comes through Jesus
- 16:00Christ. Our souls are changed and
- 16:02transformed through Jesus Christ.
- 16:04Faith in him in verse 18. To wrap it up, John said no one
- 16:10has ever seen God but the unique 11 capital O which is Jesus who
- 16:15is himself God. I don't know how we can read
- 16:20these scriptures, but I love going through the Bible verse by
- 16:23verse because you can't ignore the truth that hits you over and
- 16:27over again. Listen, people are trying to say
- 16:32Jesus is not God and we read it over and over again, verse 18.
- 16:37No one has ever seen God, but the unique one who is himself
- 16:41God. Jesus is God and is near to the
- 16:45Father's heart. He has revealed God to us.
- 16:49You know God the Father through your faith in Jesus.
- 16:52Jesus is our high priest. He's the one that bridges the
- 16:55gap of God the Father to us. That's incredible that we now
- 17:01have access to the throne room of God.
- 17:04I'm I'm a go on that Hebrews 4. Let me let me wrap it up with
- 17:07this. I read verse 15 and verse 16 and
- 17:10Hebrews 4 says, so let us come boldly to the throne of our
- 17:13gracious God. There we receive His mercy and
- 17:16we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
- 17:20That our High Priest, Jesus Christ.
- 17:24He now gives us access to heaven.
- 17:27He gives us the ability to be bold, to come to God in His
- 17:32throne room because of Christ life and death and resurrection.
- 17:37And now our faith in Him connects us to God the Father.
- 17:40That we can walk boldly into God's throne room with our sin
- 17:45and our junk because He now sees Jesus, not us.
- 17:50That when God looks down and looks at his children, he
- 17:53doesn't see your mistakes, He doesn't see your sin, He doesn't
- 17:56see your regret. He doesn't see those things you
- 17:58thought those things you did. He sees his perfect lamb that
- 18:03died on the cross for you. He sees his Son Jesus.
- 18:07And now, because of our faith in him, we have access to the
- 18:11throne room of God. We get to talk to our heavenly
- 18:14Father boldly. That's wild, That's amazing.
- 18:19Don't take that for granted when Satan tries to tell you to be
- 18:22stuck where you're at and not go to not go to God 'cause he
- 18:25doesn't want to hear from you or you, man, you're in that sin.
- 18:28You just did that again. God doesn't want you to come.
- 18:30False lies. Rebuke that junk because Jesus,
- 18:35who's our high priest, understands our weaknesses, that
- 18:38he knows what you're struggling with.
- 18:40But guess what? He did not sin.
- 18:42So we have a perfect unblemished Savior that we can go to and
- 18:48through him we have access now to God the Father that we can
- 18:52boldly come into his throne room of grace, his unlimited
- 18:56resources because he loves us and he's a good father.
- 18:59I love you guys. I hope this blessed you today
- 19:02and I'm praying for you to walk in the freedom that God has for
- 19:06you. You have access to unlimited
- 19:08resources in your heavenly Father.
- 19:11Go to him and know that your high priest has got you.
- 19:14Let me pray for y'all and let's get up out of here.
- 19:17Lord Jesus, I love you God, I thank you for who you are.
- 19:21You are a good father and I'm just so thankful God for your
- 19:25grace. I am unworthy of it, Lord, but
- 19:28it's not about my character, it's about yours because it's
- 19:31who you are. You were the same yesterday,
- 19:33today and forever and I thank you for that and I praise you
- 19:36for that. God help us walk in this truth
- 19:40that we just read today. Let your word fill our hearts.
- 19:43God, we love you, we thank you, we give you glory and we pray
- 19:47all this in Jesus name, Amen. I love y'all.
- 19:50God bless.
