- 0:08To Jasy. I know that's arty, but I want you to know a
- 0:16minute, welcome back. W I'm taking out your deal you know, Mina
- 0:27it's calling. Hey, guys, we're sister's door. I'm Brennan and yeah
- 0:35we're here with Heavywhere looking forward to this interview with Chris, longtime friend of
- 0:38ours. Hey, boys, friends, indeed we are. Thanks for joining
- 0:42us tonight. Hello, thanks for having us. Chris means a lot.
- 0:45Your continued support for the scene, like locally and internationally, means a lot
- 0:49to us. So thank you very much. My absolute pleasure. Guys.
- 0:52We're not here to talk about me, We're here to talk about you and
- 0:55how good you guys are. Like. He's just recently premiered the music video
- 0:58for your latest single, Dn't give up on Us. I mean yesterday,
- 1:00I believe by by have you Max? So, I know it's early days,
- 1:03but thats been received. Yeah, it's done really well so far.
- 1:08We kind of did a live stream before the video dropped to sort of build
- 1:11the suspense and build the hype because we really believe in this song. It's
- 1:15kind of been one of our favorites from the album. It is more of
- 1:18the ballad from the album, But yeah, it's so far. We've got
- 1:21great response and a lot of good response on the video too, which is
- 1:25which is exciting, and obviously it unveils our new bass player, which was
- 1:29kind of the talking point at the moment is so obviously having stage in there's
- 1:33really sparked a few more people to jump on and have a look, especially
- 1:37people back home like like oh, stages in the ban now like this is
- 1:42cool. So I'm yeah, so far, so good. It's done well
- 1:45and compared to the last one, which was Change, which we did last
- 1:48year, yeah, it's kind of on part probably doing a little bit better
- 1:51than Change actually, which is good to good to hear. Now we'll get
- 1:55on the stage a little bit later. But firstly, you can release the
- 1:57audio for the song last week, the video this week. So was that
- 2:00a strategic thing or was the video just not ready in join No, it
- 2:05was a bit of a strategy, yeah, bit of a thing. Yeah.
- 2:07We thought a lot of bands and artists do it like that these days,
- 2:10and we thought rather than people going to the video, you know,
- 2:15it's sort of it can it can affect you, you know, streaming numbers
- 2:19and stuff like that. Because I've just watched the video rather than going to
- 2:21your streaming numbers, you know, your streaming platforms and stuff. So we
- 2:24tried it that way just to sort of, you know, bump up the
- 2:28streaming numbers a little bit, you know, and then and sort of bring
- 2:32more of a hype around for the music video as a separate thing. And
- 2:36also we did it to sort of milk the song a little bit as well,
- 2:38you know, because once it's out there in the world, you know,
- 2:40it can kind of get lost in the world as well, like of
- 2:44things, so it's kind of just milking that, like you know, obviously
- 2:46the release of the song. First we did the show of based around that,
- 2:49and then it was like, all right, let's do the the video
- 2:53a week later. So yeah, and it was also a bit strategic because
- 2:55we didn't know how we're gonna unveil stage as well, so well, if
- 3:00we do the video on the same night or the same day, people would
- 3:02have seen that and then it wouldn't have been the surprise for the show,
- 3:05so it was kind of that was a bit play to it as well.
- 3:08You mentioned earlier that it's a bit slower, I guess than some of your
- 3:12normal songs, So tell us a bit about the track musically and what you're
- 3:15going for with it. Honestly, there was no plan with this one.
- 3:19When we were demoing this song. This song was an old song actually that
- 3:22I had years ago, even before we moved. It was just one that
- 3:24always stuck around in my head. And when we're sending demos to our producer,
- 3:28he was like, keep sending more, keep sending them more, and
- 3:30I'm like, so I went back into my notes and my lyric books from
- 3:34like years ago, and I found this one again and I was like,
- 3:36oh, I remember this one, and for some reason, I remember the
- 3:38chords and the melody. It just came back to me. So I was
- 3:42like, well that's a start there. And then we sort of tweaked it
- 3:45in the studio actually right in this spot we were sitting me in, Austin
- 3:47mucked around, and Austin added some cool guitar parts, and it just kind
- 3:52of come together in the studio like our home studio, and we're like,
- 3:55Jesus, song's got some magic. Like without it even realizing it was like,
- 4:00oh, this has got some magic, this song. And then as
- 4:01we tweaked it a bit more and then we took it to the studio,
- 4:04like, we did some more tweaks in the main studio. Obviously the producer
- 4:06chucked in some ideas and we pieced it together and it just became like one
- 4:11of them songs that was like it just sort of fell into place and we're
- 4:15like, ah, so we didn't really plan to write it like a specific
- 4:18one kind of fell into that sort of category that work really happened. It
- 4:23was just natural. Go by the title and then the song itself, like
- 4:28it sounds like the desperate cries of a crushed man made it. Have you
- 4:30been dubbed just before you write that? Oh? We moved. Actually that's
- 4:36when I wrote the song because obviously I was in a relationship at the time
- 4:40and we were moving, and you know, you tried to keep the relationship
- 4:44going, but obviously moving state, yeah, and who doesn't really want to
- 4:48do that. It's kind of like, well, you're kind of torn.
- 4:50Was like, I want to keep that working, but at the same time,
- 4:54I got my passion, my dreams that I want to follow, So
- 4:57it was kind of like, yeah, it was a bit of a cry,
- 4:59and then we kind I sort of thought, well, it's also a
- 5:00bit of a something like a band cry Out as well, because when we
- 5:04did move, everyone thought were crazy, like why are you moving to Melbourne?
- 5:06Like we use it? What for the band? What? What for?
- 5:09Like this you never make it sort of thing, and it was like
- 5:12we're going to keep going, you know, like we just keep persevering and
- 5:15keep plugging away. And yeah, so it sort of has two meanings.
- 5:17Even though it's based around a relationship, it's kind of got that hidden meaning
- 5:23of like don't give up with us, because we're going to just keep going
- 5:25until you know, our dreams come true? Okay, much further's that brow
- 5:30and say you've had quite a few of your dreams come true so far.
- 5:31How much do you have to get? Oh, we always want more really
- 5:35until insid'd like obviously, yeah, we always want to do something, and
- 5:41obviously each year something comes up like a decent opportunity like next year like as
- 5:46Monsters of Rock Cruise, which we were lucky enough to get on. So
- 5:49that kind of keeps us going for another hour. Oh, we've got to
- 5:51keep going until then and then obviously we're released in the album and then yeah,
- 5:55until the fire burns. Yeah, but we do just enjoy doing it
- 5:58and love it as well, so when we could do get these offers and
- 6:00these good opportunities and stuff, they're kind of just you know, they're like
- 6:02the cherry on top. You know, we love it anyway, even if
- 6:04we don't get these big opportunities or whatever, like, we'll still do it
- 6:08and enjoy it because we love it. So they fucking help, don't They
- 6:15don't give up? What This is a fourth song release from an album so
- 6:18far, mate, So I know when you release singles you want every one
- 6:21of them to reflect the album in a different sort of way. So how
- 6:25does this song reflect it? I think it shows the growth in the band
- 6:30because obviously we've it's a little bit different to what we sort of have done
- 6:34in the past, like the production on it and the drumming and everything's like
- 6:38very very big and bombastic, and even just the writing is a lot more.
- 6:44It's got a bit more to it. This whole album actually really just
- 6:46shows the growth in the band as writers, I think, because obviously before,
- 6:51you know, we had some meaningful songs on the last albums that's you
- 6:55know, we did, but it was based more around you know, like
- 6:58having fun and like you know, like but as you get already experienced different
- 7:00things, and yeah, so I think it's going to show the growth,
- 7:03and this song in particular has probably got to show the growth of what's to
- 7:06come on the album, like with the more Mellowers songs on the album.
- 7:10So yeah, yeah, you've released those those four songs from the album,
- 7:14So give us two of them for people to listen to. The best represented
- 7:19I reckon probably Prisoner and probably this one. Yeah, they're a good mixture
- 7:24of like what's like the heavier side and then the because we do it's a
- 7:30good The album's pretty diverse, Like, we actually got a lot more heavy
- 7:34hidden gems in the album that you know, probably might be a single,
- 7:40but I think the like for the heavier rock fans will enjoy them. There's
- 7:44a couple of heavy ones on the Yeah, some pretty fast stuff and some
- 7:46very guitar driven stuff, and yeah, there's a lot more to come.
- 7:50Yeah, like the ones we've probably released are the more radio friendly sort of
- 7:53songs, I guess you could say, but yeah, there's definitely some hidden
- 7:57heavy gems on there that I hope people will enjoy once I hear them.
- 8:01So what can you tell us about this mysterious album? Guys like I can't
- 8:05get anything out of Tim, so well, what can you tell us about
- 8:07it? It's a it's a it's a powerful album, I should say.
- 8:13Lyrically, it's very like obviously the probably the most laid back song on the
- 8:18album would be probably kiss Me. That's just very like, you know,
- 8:22fun pop rock. Where's the rest of all sort of got a bit more
- 8:24of a bit more of a story to them. A lot of highs and
- 8:28lows, like you know, there's some heavy ones, you know, there's
- 8:31some some are written about us as a band, like you know, like
- 8:35you know, the crap we've been through over the time, like what most
- 8:39bands experience over the time. You know, you're getting a door open and
- 8:41the door slams on your you know. So there's some songs about that.
- 8:43There's some songs about love, and then there's some about like, yeah,
- 8:48living life and trying to you know, the positive meaning ones you know,
- 8:54like Change for example, that was written about when I was in a rough
- 8:56going through a rough time in my personal life. So I was like it
- 9:00was kind of almost like writing a song about the demons I was facing at
- 9:05the time. And so yeah, there's a little bit more in depth sort
- 9:09of yeah, yeah, deeper songs I think that hopefully people will relate to
- 9:13but yeah stuff we wanted to get out. Yeah, what I do know
- 9:18is that you're going to be launching it on January the twenty fifth next year
- 9:22at Max Watts. So what can we expect for that show? You're going
- 9:24to do something crazy like play the whole album or what's supposed gonna happen.
- 9:28Yeah, we're tying things now. Obviously, the album's going to be released
- 9:33on the Friday, and then the show's on the Saturday, so it doesn't
- 9:35give people long to sort of learn the song, so it'll be a mixture.
- 9:39I will probably put some of the standard Sister's dull ones in there,
- 9:43but probredominantly of the show will be mainly the new stuff. And then obviously
- 9:48from there we'll see how what songs receive well with the audience, and then
- 9:52obviously will narrow it down like future shows. But yeah, the launch show
- 9:56will probably feature most of the songs, all the new ones, which is
- 10:01exciting, but we've got to we've got to rehearse. You got a few
- 10:05months. How about your live show, guys, Like I've seen you guys
- 10:09play live for fuck have to be fifteen years now because I've always had spectacular
- 10:15live shows with your sparkling stuff and stuff like that. But you also want
- 10:18to be trying to constantly better yourself too, So how much further is your
- 10:22live show come? Yes from when you've seen it, Like, I don't
- 10:26know when the last time you saw us, But obviously we're always high energy
- 10:28and boys, you know, whoever's in the audience, it's always about them,
- 10:33you know, we want to give them the best show. Whether there's
- 10:35ten people there or five hundred people there, we will always give our one
- 10:39hundred and ten percent. As you know, because you've seen you saw some
- 10:43of the early shows where we were playing to no one, like, so
- 10:50energy is still there. And obviously yeah, as you got older, like
- 10:54you know, we've we've accumulated some better gear over the time, and sort
- 10:58of just like the essence of what we used to be like when we first
- 11:01started, where we'd fill the stage with so much stuff, it's kind of
- 11:05just a little bit more streamlined, a little bit more I guess you could
- 11:09say professional in certain aspects that we really try and like even on the weekend
- 11:13last weekend, you know, we we didn't take a lot of stuff,
- 11:16but we just always add extra stuff, like we even if we before we
- 11:20used to own a lot of the stuff, but some of it break broke
- 11:24or doesn't work anymore. It's old and doesn't look any good anymore. So
- 11:26generally now we sort of hire things just for the one soft gigs, like
- 11:31we'll hire extra lighting or extra effects to make that gig special. And yeah,
- 11:35we just sort of I guess there's a bit more streamlined and a bit
- 11:39more yeah, yeah, using things like for gear and special effects sort of
- 11:43light. We use more quality now, more than like quantity like we used
- 11:46to do. Like we'd have like real cheap lights like everywhere you remember it,
- 11:50Like we have these faces on these big big barrels that would shoot smoke
- 11:54out of them and stuff and things like that that was sort of strenuous on
- 11:58our bodies and stuff at the time. Kind of cut back on that and
- 12:01use more quality things and just just just then just feeling the stage with props
- 12:05and whatnot. So and you know, and like Brenon said, the energy
- 12:07is still there and that's just purely because we love it and we enjoy it,
- 12:09Like, you know, we're not putting on a facade. It's just
- 12:11how we naturally feel on stage, isn't it. Yeah. You know,
- 12:16now we touched on this before, but I believe this sister's whole family has
- 12:20grown by one with your youngest brother stage joining on base. So how's he
- 12:24fitting in? How long has he been in the pipeline for what the fuck?
- 12:28Yeah? I mean he's been in the pipeline for a while, but
- 12:33it was just finding the right time. Like during COVID we really probably sat
- 12:37down and were like, we've got to do something. And then he wasn't
- 12:41really ready for these new with the releases as the time went on, you
- 12:43know, obviously we had the kids cruise and we had these opportunities that he
- 12:46just wasn't ready for the at that time. So we're like, well,
- 12:50we can't keep delaying the process. And then I said, if we don't
- 12:54bring him in for this new album, like as a whole new, fresh
- 12:58thing, you know, we're gonna drop the album. I said, we
- 13:01probably never will bring him in. You know. It was just one of
- 13:03them things where like it just felt right to do it now. So we
- 13:05sort of gave him a deadline and said you're doing this show. We're just
- 13:09going to do five songs as a you know, like as your intro to
- 13:13the to the band to get on stage and get a feel, but after
- 13:16that you're in and yeah, and giving him that deadline sort of gave him
- 13:20the the push he needed because I think he just felt like he was going
- 13:26to get in by default sort of thing, and it was just like,
- 13:28well, we sort of set a level for ourselves as a band, like
- 13:31to hear and he was like here, and we said, you've got to
- 13:33at least get to like here, you know. And then but we didn't
- 13:37want to throw him in the deep end for one and then was so we
- 13:43didn't want to bring us down a bit to sort of like people go,
- 13:46oh, you were a bit often night the base sounded a bit funny whatever
- 13:48like. So it was fine in that when he's ready and he did a
- 13:52great job and it does it feels like we're complete, and it kind of
- 13:54rejuvenated us a little bit, like it feels like we've got a yeah,
- 13:58another another you know, five years in us to sort of keep plugging away.
- 14:05What about you? Have you been relegated to the triangle. Yeah,
- 14:09it's uh, it's it's good. I'm happy about it. Because you know,
- 14:13we'll get in the question all the time. You know, where's where's
- 14:15the bass player? Where's your bass player? You know, like no one
- 14:18gave a ship when I played bass. You know, it was kind of
- 14:22like I'm handing it to stage now. You know, I taught him everything
- 14:24and he's up to scratch now and uh yeah, you know, as Brennan
- 14:28said, it's like a new lease of life in the pin with a new
- 14:31album coming, and it's like this new era of us, like you know,
- 14:35we're a four piece. It's yeah, you know, I'm excited.
- 14:39And you're not the youngest in the band anymore. I know you're family supporting
- 14:46you guys through everything. But surely, but they can't be happy with the
- 14:50fact they've lost another sunder rock and roll happy. I don't know. Yeah,
- 14:56I think that it was that you always thought it was going to happen,
- 14:58and and yeah, when now it's finally has it's mum. Mum got
- 15:01emotional out of them, out of all of them, because yeah, obviously
- 15:05she goes he was the little boy that used to stand next to me at
- 15:07gigs and now watching him on stage, she's like, ah, it's yeah,
- 15:11it was kind of surreal, I think for them both. But yeah,
- 15:15we're proud of Stage because I mean, he had a lot to sacrifice
- 15:18when we moved, like he was quite young. So even though it feels
- 15:20like he's jumping in at a time where the band's doing quite well, he's
- 15:24sort of had to sacrifice himself, you know. So he's paid his dues
- 15:28in the way of, like you know, in other ways by like starting
- 15:31a new life here and starting new schools, and you know that. You
- 15:35know, he had sacrifices too, so you know he deserves it now,
- 15:41you know, to enjoy the bit of joy we get out of playing the
- 15:43music and playing live and touring and whatnot. So yeah, everyone's happy about
- 15:50it. It's good. Had a bit more of a serious though with that
- 15:52though, Guys like, how's it going to change his sister's whole sound like
- 15:56it's going to be Is it going to be media and fatter now with the
- 15:58two guitars, Yeah, because at the moment the last probably for the last
- 16:03two years, we've been playing with bass in the tracks, so it's always
- 16:07it started. So the bass track was recorded by Arson, all pre recorded
- 16:11and it but it gave it didn't give us much freedom to sort of extend
- 16:18songs or you know, get crowd involved and stuff. It was very like
- 16:22regimented, Like even the mess ups at the end and stuff were all to
- 16:25click, which we got used to and we're fine with, but it didn't
- 16:27bef our sound up when Elstin jumped on guitar full time and we do with
- 16:30the two guitars and the bass and the track. But now it just gives
- 16:34us a bit more freedom and nothing beats like a live bass sound on stage,
- 16:38even just in rehearsal. It's like we're like, oh, we can
- 16:41actually hear the runs, we can actually hear at more fuller, you know,
- 16:44and we're trying. We tried different things and like oh that works now,
- 16:47you know, like rather than just being rather than just being completely yes,
- 16:52locked into that click track of the perfect bass. So yeah, very
- 16:57good. And what's next for us? Guys? You've got the Rock the
- 17:02Boat cruise coming up? But what do is you got coming up? What
- 17:03can tell us? Yeah, so we've got Rock the Boat coming up in
- 17:07October, so we'll probably release our last single around that time, and then
- 17:12the pre orders for the new album will be getting released soon as well,
- 17:17so that will be all be able to get pre ordered before the show.
- 17:22And then obviously the big show is on yes Saturday, the twenty fifth of
- 17:26January at Max Watts, so we're excited about that. So we've got yeah,
- 17:30big show planned for that. And then we just recently found out we
- 17:33sold out our listening party. We're doing a bit of a listening party for
- 17:37the album for the die hard fans, so that's gonna be fun and nice
- 17:41intimate night with eighty odd people, which will be fun and we're excited about
- 17:45that. And then yeah, we go over to America for the months as
- 17:49of Rock Cruise next year, which is very exciting, and then we'll probably
- 17:53do a bit of an album tour of Australia when we get back and hit
- 17:56all the major cities, and then you'll probably start work on the next album
- 18:02after that, I guess with stage very straight. But in the meantime,
- 18:07the new single Don't Give Up on Us is out now. It's a little
- 18:11bit different for the boys, but also, like you say, does show
- 18:12a bit of maturity and it's a really good song. Guy, So best
- 18:15of black with it and hopefully we'll catch up with you on Thursday. Yes,
- 18:18Chris thanks again for the interview. Appreciate it. H Tjasy. I
- 18:33know that's arty, but I want you to know a minute welcome die.
- 18:41W'm taking off your deal. You know the miny. Just call him.
