- 0:00Hey guys, it's friendsly Happy Wednesday.
- 0:04Welcome back to another episode on the podcast.
- 0:08Today we're finishing out the 1st chapter of First
- 0:11Thessalonians and I really love how Paul wraps up this opening
- 0:16section. It's once again encouraging, but
- 0:19also very identity shaping, which I think is important as we
- 0:24move forward because if you really want to live in your
- 0:29special purpose as a believer, you have to know the why.
- 0:34Why are you set apart? Why are you called, and why are
- 0:38you ultimately to look different?
- 0:41So with that, let's go ahead and read, starting in verse 4.
- 0:46For we know, brothers and sisters, loved by God, that he
- 0:51has chosen you because our gospel came to you not simply
- 0:55with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep
- 1:00conviction. You know how we lived among you.
- 1:04For your sake. You became imitators of us and
- 1:07of the Lord. For you welcomed the message in
- 1:10the midst of severe suffering, with the joy given by the Holy
- 1:15Spirit. And so you became a model to all
- 1:18the believers in Macedonia and Achaya.
- 1:22The Lord's message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and
- 1:27Achaya. Your faith in God has become
- 1:29known everywhere. Therefore, we do not need to say
- 1:33anything about it. For they themselves report what
- 1:37kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turn to God
- 1:41from idols to serve the living and true God and to wait for his
- 1:46Son from heaven whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who rescues
- 1:51us from the coming wrath. OK, so let's go right into
- 1:58takeaways and reflections. First of all, we see Paul used
- 2:04the word chosen and he says God has chosen you, but he calls us
- 2:10brothers and sisters loved by God.
- 2:13Now that word chosen can bring up a lot of theological debate
- 2:17around a term called election. And I'm not going to dive deep
- 2:23into that today, primarily because it's just very
- 2:26theological. And that is not what I've gone
- 2:29to school for and studied. So I just like to think of this
- 2:34as what makes the most sense to me.
- 2:37We obviously have free will, and anyone can choose to believe in
- 2:42Jesus because God is omniscient. That means he's all knowing.
- 2:47He already knows who will choose him.
- 2:50So that's kind of how I view it. But regardless of where someone
- 2:55lands in that debate theologically, there are some
- 2:59very powerful truths that we can break down right here.
- 3:03First of all, being chosen is rooted in God's heart.
- 3:07It's not in our performance. Therefore, we have a reason to
- 3:11honor Him because He chose us. This identity, it should produce
- 3:17gratitude, not self-sufficiency or self obsession.
- 3:23This leads to reverence, not pride.
- 3:27So as God's chosen people, we get to confess Jesus Christ as
- 3:32Lord, we get to center our lives on glorifying Him, and we get to
- 3:36share the good news. Y'all God's choice.
- 3:40It empowers us to obey and serve Him.
- 3:44But our choice of God, it prompts us to please Him to live
- 3:49lives worthy of Our Calling, as it says in Philippians 127.
- 3:55So I want to ask you guys, if you're a believer, do you live
- 4:00with authority and confidence as someone chosen by God?
- 4:06And think about it, if you are approved by the creator of the
- 4:10world, why do other people's opinions matter so much?
- 4:15I was thinking about this. It's pretty wild to me that we
- 4:20so often let the opinions of others created by the one who
- 4:27approves of us, how we let those opinions shape our identity and
- 4:31value so much. Like we should not even let them
- 4:35have a say in our lives because we live for an audience of 1.
- 4:41Secondly, we're called to share, but it's dependent fully on the
- 4:46Holy Spirit. It says in Scripture that I just
- 4:51read that it's in power and in the Holy Spirit.
- 4:53So yes, we are commissioned to share the gospel.
- 4:57First, Peter 29 says that we are a chosen people in a royal
- 5:01priesthood. Second Corinthians 520 calls us
- 5:05ambassadors for Christ and urges us to tell people to be
- 5:09reconciled to God. But here's something so freeing
- 5:14that we need to remember this spirit is the one who convicts
- 5:18people's hearts, Zechariah, 46, says.
- 5:22Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit.
- 5:26So it is not our job to change someone else's heart or their
- 5:31destiny. That's the spirit's role.
- 5:35Our mission is faithfulness. It's to share the truth and we
- 5:40get to pray that this Spirit would provide us with the
- 5:44courage and supply us with the words to say and ultimately to
- 5:48soften the heart of whoever is receiving the truth.
- 5:52But this is not an excuse to not prepare because we still do need
- 5:57to study Scripture. We need to know what we're
- 6:00talking about, know the Word of God, and really know our
- 6:04testimony, how God brought each of us from death to life.
- 6:09We see in First Corinthians 213, it says, and we articulate these
- 6:14realities with the words imparted to us by the Spirit and
- 6:19not with the words taught by human wisdom.
- 6:22So the bottom line is that the Holy Spirit intercedes, He
- 6:26empowers, and He gives the words.
- 6:29And this truth should take pressure off.
- 6:32At least it did for me, because we are vessels and messengers.
- 6:37We're not the Savior. Also, we see Paul remind us
- 6:44through his writing to the Thessalonians how he, Silas, and
- 6:48Timothy lived among them. This is him saying that their
- 6:52actions aligned with their beliefs.
- 6:54And we see that authenticity. It builds his credibility.
- 7:00Romans 12/2 commands us not to conform to the pattern of this
- 7:04world, and they certainly did not.
- 7:07But here's some honest questions that I reflected on and I'm
- 7:10going to bring to y'all. First of all, does your life,
- 7:14does it confirm or contradict your faith?
- 7:18Is there evidence of good fruit or bad fruit?
- 7:22And are you set apart or are you just a part of the crowd?
- 7:26And I know I've said this in other episodes, but it's not
- 7:30just the big moments. It's oftentimes in the ordinary
- 7:34that matters the most. Think about how you treat
- 7:37servers like in a restaurant, how you speak to your own family
- 7:42and your siblings, how you drive on the road.
- 7:46That was one that I was really thinking about.
- 7:49The Lord is still teaching me patience here as a driver, but
- 7:54also like how you interact with your coworkers or your
- 7:57classmates, what you're listening to and watching or
- 8:01even talking about with your friends.
- 8:03Because obedience in the mundane, it does matter.
- 8:08And also we are to expect suffering.
- 8:12It's part of our call. We see that the Thessalonians,
- 8:16they were marked by this, the Jews and Greeks, they were
- 8:19persecuting them for their faith.
- 8:22So we have to go in expecting rejection in a sinful world
- 8:26because the reality is we are on a collision course with earthly
- 8:31values and heavenly values. They do not align.
- 8:36And as believers, we're foreigners here.
- 8:39This world is in no way our home.
- 8:42We often hear home is where the heart is.
- 8:45Well, our hearts, they don't belong to this world, they
- 8:49belong to heaven. So of course, this world is not
- 8:53going to feel comfortable. And also like the ruler of this
- 8:57world, it says in the Bible, the king of the air is the enemy of
- 9:02the one that you belong to. He's the enemy of the Lord.
- 9:07So practically, this might look like being excluded from old
- 9:12friend groups that you once used to be a part of.
- 9:16This might include lonely nights when you choose obedience over
- 9:21old habits. I personally experienced that in
- 9:24college and it was not easy at all.
- 9:28It was painful at times but y'all it was so worth it because
- 9:32it refined me and it taught me how to seek the Lord and find
- 9:36Jesus in those moments. And also fighting against what
- 9:41your flesh craves but knowing that it's wrong.
- 9:45But think about these things and just what a chance to become
- 9:50more like Jesus because Jesus knows every single feeling and
- 9:55emotion that we experience. He knows the loneliness, the
- 9:59rejection, the weakness, and he's interceding for you in
- 10:04heaven right now. Second Corinthians 1/5, this is
- 10:08my verse of the year, but it says we share abundantly in
- 10:12Christ's sufferings, but also abundantly in his comfort.
- 10:16So instead of asking why me whenever you face trials or
- 10:20discomfort, what if we reposition that question to why
- 10:25not me? Because if suffering shapes you
- 10:28into Christlikeness, isn't that the goal?
- 10:33And no, we don't need to desire suffering, but it's in the
- 10:37hardship that you grow dependent on your Father, and you truly
- 10:42encounter his compassion and His tender love in ways that you
- 10:47probably would not otherwise. Now, Paul ends this chapter by
- 10:53saying that they turn from idols to serve the living and true God
- 10:58and to wait for Jesus. So this is the full picture of a
- 11:02transformed life. You're turning from what what
- 11:06once was drowning you in sin. You're turning to God.
- 11:11You're serving him actively, and you're waiting for Jesus
- 11:15expectantly. Titus 213, It says that Jesus is
- 11:21our blessed hope. His return is what we wait for.
- 11:25So here's how we finish this out.
- 11:29Number one, is your faith evident everywhere you go?
- 11:33Not just in parts of your life, not just with certain people,
- 11:37but with everyone? Is there clear evidence of
- 11:41change from your old life to your new life in Christ?
- 11:45And have you truly turned from worldly idols?
- 11:49And are you actively serving and waiting for your blessed hope,
- 11:54Jesus? Because that's the identity that
- 11:57Paul reminds them of. And it reminds us of this too.
- 12:01We have been chosen. We are empowered and sent.
- 12:05We are meant to be set apart, but we're hope filled.
- 12:10So let's go ahead and move into prayer.
- 12:13Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that our identity, it's rooted
- 12:20in your heart. Would you help us to live
- 12:23confidently as your chosen people, as your royal
- 12:28priesthood, a holy nation, your special possession?
- 12:33We are approved by you above all else.
- 12:37Father, would you teach us to depend 100% on your Spirit as we
- 12:43share the gospel? As we prepare for those moments,
- 12:48would you mold our lives so that our actions reflect our faith?
- 12:53And when suffering does come, Lord, just ground us in hope.
- 12:59Would you make us more like Jesus?
- 13:01Turn our hearts fully from the idols that once consumed us?
- 13:06And would you help us to wait eagerly and expectantly for your
- 13:10return one day? We ask this all in your name.
- 13:14Amen. OK, that's what I have for you
- 13:17guys today. I hope that it blesses y'all and
- 13:21that the Lord will continue just teaching y'all new things, new
- 13:25insight, and I'm looking forward to the next episode.
- 13:29Bye y'all.
