Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / David Smith: Washington Bureau Chief for the Guardian on FBI releasing photos of possible Charlie Kirk gunman
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Just go to the US now, where a man hunt's
- 0:01Speaker 1: still underway for the killer of the conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
- 0:05Speaker 1: David Smith is the Washington bureau chief of the Guardian,
- 0:08Speaker 1: with US Live this morning. David, the FBI has just
- 0:11Speaker 1: held a press conference. What's the latest on this man hunt.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Yeah, well, the FBI released images of this suspect. They
- 0:19Speaker 2: say they've recovered a weapon, but otherwise the manhunt continues.
- 0:26Speaker 2: There have been various rumors flying around about, you know,
- 0:28Speaker 2: what's something engraved on this bullet that is certainly not
- 0:31Speaker 2: confirmed so far, and we still don't know much about
- 0:36Speaker 2: who this is, what the motive might be, but certainly,
- 0:41Speaker 2: as you can imagine, a tragedy that is dominating many
- 0:46Speaker 2: headlines and much attention in America right now.
- 0:48Speaker 1: David, what do they think was inscribed on the bullet?
- 0:52Speaker 2: Well, there were some media reports suggesting that there were
- 0:57Speaker 2: statements there about fascism and about trans gender ideology and
- 1:01Speaker 2: so on. I think some members of Congress on the
- 1:04Speaker 2: Republican side have been quick to seize on that, but
- 1:07Speaker 2: just to underline, that has not been officially confirmed. So yeah,
- 1:13Speaker 2: it's very hard at this moment to discern the veracity
- 1:18Speaker 2: of that, and I think worth recalling that in other
- 1:23Speaker 2: major incidents such as this, like the attempt at assassination
- 1:26Speaker 2: of Donald Trump, you get a social media pylon of
- 1:29Speaker 2: people rushing to ascribe the motives once I try to
- 1:33Speaker 2: blame the other, and then later we often discover maybe
- 1:36Speaker 2: that was wrong or false, or maybe the motives who
- 1:40Speaker 2: are quite complex, or I think in the case of
- 1:43Speaker 2: the first Trump assassination attempt, we you know, last year,
- 1:46Speaker 2: we still don't really know what the motive was.
- 1:48Speaker 1: David, appreciate that update. Thanks so much for being with me.
- 1:51Speaker 1: David Smith, Washington bureau chief for The Guardian. The nets
- 1:54Speaker 1: closing in, they've got a footwear impression, they've got a
- 1:56Speaker 1: photo of the guy they think did it or a
- 1:58Speaker 1: strong person of interest, and a forearm print as well.
