- 0:02Hi listeners. Welcome to the.
- 0:04She speaks live podcast a weekly encouragement where we share our
- 0:09God's stories. I'm your host.
- 0:12Jamie Elizabeth and I am so glad you are spending time with us
- 0:16today to listen. Hi there friend, welcome to this
- 0:22week's episode. I'm really excited to have with
- 0:26me to shut Dave Van reap, she's talking with us about how she
- 0:31just walked out of a extremely difficult season and how she
- 0:35could still see God's goodness. Even in her hardest days to
- 0:41shut. Welcome to the show here.
- 0:45Yay. Thanks for having me.
- 0:47I'm so excited to be here. Jamie, I know.
- 0:50Well, we've been IG friends Instagram friends for a while
- 0:54and I just need you had a powerful story to share with us
- 0:59and I just want the listeners to know that I was reading about
- 1:05you and it said that you grew up born and raised in Trinidad.
- 1:12So when did you come to? The u.s., let's hear a little
- 1:15back story about you. So, yes, I was born Arisen
- 1:19Trinidad. In the Caribbean.
- 1:22And in 2004, I married a Dutchman and moved to Holland.
- 1:28And then in 2009, he was working for an American company and they
- 1:35offered to bring him over here to work in their head office.
- 1:39And so he took their offer. And so we've been living just
- 1:43outside of Houston since 2009 so I'm a born again, Texan.
- 1:50Yes. Well, that's an adventure.
- 1:54All those different places and whether like you were saying
- 1:59before we hit the recording extreme differences in weather.
- 2:04So I did see that. You are my favorite kind of
- 2:08speaker Bible teacher, where you take scripture and you make it
- 2:14just come alive with applicable situations and Just really make
- 2:20it relatable so we can digest it and put it into action.
- 2:26So, real quickly, I wanted to know.
- 2:28Is that a recent calling for you or how did that just come about?
- 2:34Well, um, honestly I grew up very far from the word fall from
- 2:40Jesus. I was raised Catholic, but I had
- 2:44a very skewed gospel growing up, and when I came to Christ, It
- 2:50was 2010, my father-in-law was dying of cancer and I found
- 2:56myself just crying out to the Lord for him.
- 2:59And one day I was just on my knees bowling and just asking
- 3:05God for mercy. And then after that, I picked up
- 3:09the remote and I turned the TV on and there was a pastor on and
- 3:13he was he was already done with history month.
- 3:16So his message wasn't for me that day I guess.
- 3:20But he was saying, if you haven't asked Jesus into your
- 3:23heart, ask him now. Hmm.
- 3:25And so, I did. And he came, I mean, I literally
- 3:29felt something leap inside my body.
- 3:32It was an actual visceral reaction.
- 3:34And my first thought was Jesus is really alive.
- 3:39Yeah. Because I had gone through much
- 3:42of my adulthood just exploring. I was into New Age stuff.
- 3:47I was into Buddha I tried everything and I believed in
- 3:52everything, but I believed in nothing, you know.
- 3:56And when I discovered Jesus, everything changed.
- 3:59And so I signed up for a Bible study to find out.
- 4:04Well, what is this? That I believe it and exactly.
- 4:08And I got voracious for the word and I started asking, question
- 4:11after question, I started to literally piece my life
- 4:16together. Connect in connection to the
- 4:20word and so in Bible study I would ask questions or bring
- 4:25things up when we're talking about the scripture and just
- 4:29related to life. And then I got asked to be a
- 4:34Bible study leader and then it just and that I got asked to
- 4:37teach my own material and things like that.
- 4:40So all I have no books and notebooks have just journals
- 4:44with scripture and life and scripture life and And a lot of
- 4:49prayers. Yeah, and so that's just kind of
- 4:53how it emerge. So it was basically my Pursuit
- 4:57Of God that led me into this. And so, it wasn't that I was
- 5:02trying to be a Bible teacher. It wasn't that I was trying to
- 5:06be a speaker. I was just wanting to know Jesus
- 5:10and I found myself here. Mmm, so cool.
- 5:14What a neat calling? I know.
- 5:16And it's the The stories that I think most of us remember when
- 5:22people are speaking. It's the story behind what, you
- 5:26know, they're talking about. So I just love storytelling and
- 5:29it makes it very rememberable for others.
- 5:33So we are going to talk about you going through a difficult
- 5:38season, and one of the things that you had gone through was a
- 5:44spinal surgery. A few days later, you found out
- 5:51that your son has a mental illness.
- 5:54So talk about getting these, horrible back-to-back news, like
- 5:59I'm thinking of Job in the Bible, where he kept tapping
- 6:03that messenger coming again and again with bad news.
- 6:08So, take us back to that time where you first found out that
- 6:14you had to have this spinal injury, just this random
- 6:18Something that was unexpected and then having the other set of
- 6:23news about your son. Yes.
- 6:26So I actually have a weird spinal condition where my spine
- 6:34is aging rapidly and so when I was 27 they said my spine was 85
- 6:40years old. Oh and so in 2017, it happened
- 6:47slowly. Overtime and I had been seeing a
- 6:50neurosurgeon for a long time where it got to the point where
- 6:56I needed surgery to fuse 3 of my vertebrae, remove a couple
- 7:01desks. And so I did that back in 2017
- 7:06and he said, well, there is the possibility that they'll be more
- 7:11vertebrae in your neck. That will probably need the same
- 7:16surgery later on On and everything was fine.
- 7:21I've been doing fine after that surgery.
- 7:24And then on Halloween. Last year, I was walking around
- 7:30the neighborhood with my husband and I was telling him something
- 7:33doesn't feel right? I think I need to go find
- 7:36another neurosurgeon because our insurance change, so I decided I
- 7:40needed a new surgeon and I'd so I wasn't even seeing anybody
- 7:44because I had been fine for years.
- 7:47Yeah. And two days after that, I was
- 7:51driving my son to class and this horrific debilitating pain, took
- 7:59over me to where I could barely Drive.
- 8:01I had to call my husband to come home and from then on, I was
- 8:07bedridden for pretty much the whole month.
- 8:12I could move, but it was just excruciating to move.
- 8:17I was on On painkillers muscle relaxants steroids, everything
- 8:23to just kind of try to keep it under control.
- 8:26But I could not move, I could not function and I was rapidly.
- 8:31Losing the use of my left arm, as well as my nerves were being
- 8:35impinged, more and more. And so, in November 30th, I had
- 8:42to have surgery to remove another disc and fuse, two more
- 8:47virtue. Ray.
- 8:48And so that happened. And it was funny because when
- 8:55the first time it was coming on slowly.
- 8:58So we knew that we'd get to that point.
- 9:01This time, it was all just so quickly that I couldn't even
- 9:06wrap my mind around it properly. Make plans do anything.
- 9:11But all that time, while I was lying in bed, God was
- 9:14downloading things into me. When I would read scripture, he
- 9:19would tell me what he wanted me to.
- 9:22If from it was it was just such a beautiful time.
- 9:27Even though I was in constant pain, I had such beautiful
- 9:31conversations with God and then three days after my surgery.
- 9:37My son was diagnosed with a series of mental illnesses,
- 9:44actually, and some of them quite serious.
- 9:48And so I was heavily medicated. So I couldn't even wrap my mind
- 9:52around. Around it.
- 9:52So it took me weeks and it was like this build up, build up,
- 9:56build up of what happened and what was happening to hit me
- 10:02over and over. And I ended up going through
- 10:06this severe grief for my son because it was suddenly like I
- 10:13came out of the fog, and it was like, what what's happening?
- 10:17What's happening right now, that's been really Just a
- 10:23season, but you mentioned job and job 2:10 says, shall we
- 10:27accept good from God and not trouble?
- 10:30And that's the funny thing. We think that I'm a Believer
- 10:34now, I have Jesus. So my testimony is written and
- 10:38that my testimony ends what I say yes to Jesus.
- 10:41But he continues to write our testimony and he continues to
- 10:47walk with us through these challenges.
- 10:49The challenges still come. It's just Where we going to look
- 10:55right? I'll be going to look to him.
- 10:57Or are we going to look to something else?
- 11:00Are we going to pick up the phone and and complain about it?
- 11:04Our friends, or are we going to turn to some other source of
- 11:11empty Comfort or I'm going to turn to God in it so good.
- 11:16I know it's all about our response, right?
- 11:18How are we going to respond to these things?
- 11:20And after you talk Being about being bedridden is reminding me
- 11:24of the time that we were praying about moving from Southern
- 11:29California, to Austin. And we had run into a horrible
- 11:33financial hardship. We had the economy collapse back
- 11:37in 2007-2008 times. Yes, and wow!
- 11:42We were just wiped out. Didn't know what we're doing.
- 11:46I had three young kids at the time and we went to Texas.
- 11:52For the first time to visit and my husband had a friend there.
- 11:57Well, I came down with horrible. Bronchial cough.
- 12:02Like my lungs, just felt so heavy.
- 12:04Like an elephant was sitting on it, right, and I knew that was
- 12:09probably bronchitis, but then by the time I got home, the doctor
- 12:14was like, you've got full-blown pneumonia.
- 12:16You need to be on bed rest, and I think all of us moms can Think
- 12:23how awful that would be if you had three little that the time
- 12:29and you're telling the mom, you have to be on bed rest.
- 12:33It's like that's gonna be a little impossible.
- 12:36So, and you know, you got to have the whole takes a village
- 12:41to come together and take care of all your everyday needs with
- 12:46the kids and the house and everything else.
- 12:49So I managed to be on Three-week bad arrest, but it was the most
- 12:57beautiful time. Like you were saying, even
- 13:00though I was Ill, you have a choice where they just sit there
- 13:04and zone out and watch TV. Or are you gonna dive in and get
- 13:09closer to God, right? And so, after you were saying
- 13:13that I can reflect now on what I was doing with going into
- 13:19scripture because I was really rough.
- 13:22Sling with God, whether or not we were to move because I mean
- 13:27Southern California. I'm a beach girl.
- 13:28That's all I've known. And all my family is there.
- 13:32So I'm like, what? Lord, like, and I felt little
- 13:35this tug to move to Austin and so it's just plenty of prayer
- 13:42and just seeking him to make sure that this was the move that
- 13:46you wanted us to do. And I remember my sister-in-law
- 13:50giving me a book Called Jesus of the Suburbia.
- 13:55I think it's called and it's talking about how are you going
- 13:59to be this? Cul-de-sac, Christian, like just
- 14:02the suburbian Christian? Or are you going to get out
- 14:06there and really obey and do those scary things that God is
- 14:11speaking into you to go do and so it just changed my life.
- 14:16It wrecked my life, this book and I was like, God, out of this
- 14:21life. Three week, you know, Como most
- 14:24and I told my husband I'm like I think the Lord is telling us to
- 14:28move to Austin. So that's how we got the ball
- 14:31rolling. But it wasn't until it's
- 14:34literally. It was like be still and know
- 14:36that I am. God that I had to like shut all
- 14:39distractions and everything out and just be in bed to to seek
- 14:44him. And I see how he did that
- 14:47intentional and it was on purpose so that he can speak to
- 14:51me. So I He reminds me.
- 14:53Yeah, you know it's like when we have little kids and sometimes
- 14:57we have to just hold them by their shoulder.
- 14:59Yes. And and who will them still so
- 15:01that we can get our message across to them.
- 15:05I got allows for us to go through these seasons of
- 15:12Stillness so that we can come into communion with him and we
- 15:17can resist it and complain and feel, sorry for ourselves and
- 15:21wallow. Whoa, or we could just surround
- 15:25and submit and say, okay, God, how are you going to be
- 15:28glorified in this or even to say I'm hurting Lord?
- 15:32And I can't see my way out of this and just explain that.
- 15:37I mean, because when you look through, you know, Joseph was
- 15:41imprisoned and Jeremiah was in the cistern, and Elijah was in
- 15:46the cave. And then there's so many times
- 15:51throughout That God's people were stuck, right?
- 15:56And sometimes it feels like we're stuck but he is moving on
- 16:00our behalf. He is setting things up, he's
- 16:03making those plans. I mean when it came to my son,
- 16:07I've been involved in Ministry for many years now and my
- 16:14testimony, I have been through sexual abuse rape divorce, a
- 16:21boy. Ocean binge drinking alcohol
- 16:25abuse, you know, I've gone through everything, homelessness
- 16:29even and so there are there are so many things that I can speak
- 16:35into when I come across women. I have done Ministry in Africa
- 16:41with the poorest of the poorest women who are coming to church
- 16:47with new shoes on their feet. I have done Ministry down in
- 16:51Houston with Homeless women with AIDS.
- 16:54I have done Ministry with Rich Suburban, Housewives who have
- 17:03just pain in their marriages and paying with their kids and the
- 17:08one thing that I couldn't speak into as mental illness, that was
- 17:12the one thing that I had never experienced had never known
- 17:15close-up, and I just couldn't relate to.
- 17:19And I found myself praying, God. Please show me what to say to
- 17:25this woman. Please show me how to help them,
- 17:29because it's the one thing that I can't connect to, and now,
- 17:34boom, overnight. I became a mental health, mom,
- 17:39wow. Yes, it's hard.
- 17:43And yes, I'm praying for my son's healing every day, but at
- 17:46the same time, I'm thanking God because he has a bigger plan,
- 17:50and it's not about us. And What we're going through and
- 17:54so if he requires us to be, still just surrender to that
- 17:58just submit to that and just be still and because you know, yes,
- 18:04there's that verse be still and know that I am God.
- 18:07But That's that's only half the verse.
- 18:11The verse goes on to say, I will be exalted in the nation's.
- 18:15I will be exalted over all the Earth and so it's about him.
- 18:19He will be exalted no matter what so we could fight it and
- 18:23he'll still be exalted, or we can surrender and submit to his
- 18:26plan because he'll be exalted. Yeah.
- 18:30So I know and it's just amazing, you know, through the suffering
- 18:35and through that, that pain There's something so beautiful
- 18:40that comes out of that. And it's all for helping others
- 18:44because that's what Jesus was all about, you know, serving
- 18:48others. And by what you have gone
- 18:51through. Then you're able to serve the
- 18:54women or serve men, where you're telling them.
- 18:57This is what I went through and this is how I got through and
- 19:02you're not alone and how much more you know that you can help.
- 19:08Buddy, if you've gone through that same thing that they have.
- 19:12So so encouraging. So I know you're all about
- 19:18relatable little bite-sized things that we can like digest.
- 19:23So what are some things like if you're going through you've had
- 19:28experience with grief talking about that and history that
- 19:32you've gone through homelessness and abortion and all that that
- 19:36had to have been. So, So painful to heal from.
- 19:41Can you just give us some life applications of, you know, if
- 19:46you're in a season of grief, you know whether it's something
- 19:50you've done on your own or just out of your control, something
- 19:55happened in your life, what are some things that we can take
- 20:00action in if we are in the middle of something painful?
- 20:05Well, you know, we have Elliot this culture we have this
- 20:11tendency to want to avoid pain and we don't want to press into
- 20:19that pain and right through it and sometimes we need to hunker
- 20:24down and cling the thing is is that there couldn't have been a
- 20:28resurrection without a crucifixion.
- 20:32If Jesus did not go through that torture and torment of the
- 20:37crucifixion, even if he hadn't died, he couldn't have been
- 20:41raised and it's the same for us. We can't live a resurrected life
- 20:47if we don't go through the suffering, if we don't die to
- 20:53self, if we don't have those things to grieve with my son, I
- 21:01called a friend to talk to her about it.
- 21:04I was kind of in this. Really bad.
- 21:07Wallowing stage, you know, eating badly feeling, sorry for
- 21:11myself and telling anybody who would listen about how my heart
- 21:17was breaking for my son. And I called a friend and I told
- 21:20her about it and she said, you know, Day After Tomorrow there's
- 21:24a mental health conference at my church.
- 21:27And if I hadn't called her right then I wouldn't have known about
- 21:32the conference, my son and I went together and And there was
- 21:38so much hope in that conference, and I am seeing Ministry
- 21:44leaders, stand up on that stage and speak, who at my son's age?
- 21:49My son's a teenager, they were in rehab these.
- 21:54These people were at the depths of paying from mental illness
- 22:00and addiction. And they're now helping people
- 22:05and changing life. Herbs and so I suddenly just had
- 22:10so much hope and I trust that it what God would do.
- 22:14And I saw as well, if when we remember the things that we've
- 22:19gone through and we know, oh God, carried me out of that,
- 22:24he'll carry me out of this. It's the same reason.
- 22:27Why Israel so many times tells the Exodus story over and over
- 22:33and over again. All throughout scripture, even
- 22:36it. To the New Testament, you'll see
- 22:37them tell that whole story again of The Exodus.
- 22:41And it's because they need to remember what God has done.
- 22:45And we need to remember what God has done in our lives to know
- 22:49that he will do it again. All those things that you talked
- 22:52about that, I went through the homelessness and I'm rape and
- 22:56divorce and all those things too, to see how God has taken me
- 23:02out of everything. It's just like Genesis 50:20.
- 23:06You know what man meant for evil, God will use for good and
- 23:09he, he has. And so I know that with this, he
- 23:14will use it to. So now, I am hopeful, I'm
- 23:18excited to see what he's going to do, how he's going to use it,
- 23:22who is going to help through this, through my son's story
- 23:26through my story as his mom. And and so I am living Erected
- 23:36in that. So I'm no longer grieving I have
- 23:39that Resurrection. I have my son back because he's
- 23:42not lost in my mind anymore and so that's, that's what we need
- 23:49to remember. Mmm.
- 23:51Yeah, that's so good. I know I keep a journal or so I
- 23:55like the journal and remember, you know, write it down.
- 23:58Remember the things that God has done and, you know, I believe in
- 24:02the Bible that when they stop talking about The remembrance of
- 24:07the Lord, that's when they became a stray.
- 24:10And oh, yes, yeah. So it's so easy for us to do
- 24:15that as well. If we tend to forget and it's
- 24:19usually one more looking so self in work, you know, self focus
- 24:23inward right? Yeah.
- 24:27Right up to him, focus on him, look outward.
- 24:31Who could we help? Like what is the Lord teaching
- 24:34me through this? So instead of going, oh my gosh,
- 24:38I can't believe I'm going through this, which yellow?
- 24:41We've all done. We all do that.
- 24:43Yes, we go to that place first and then we're like okay God you
- 24:48know what are you trying to teach me?
- 24:50But yeah, so cool. Well I mean yeah no I was just
- 24:55gonna say really quickly like even in the in the Bible they're
- 25:00woman who couldn't have kids and then God granted them a child.
- 25:06But it was never that okay, you're granted a child so that
- 25:09you can have your child because you've always wanted a child
- 25:12their children were going to be. It was Isaac.
- 25:18It was Samson. It was John the Baptist.
- 25:22It was Samuel. The prophet they were people who
- 25:25were going to be Servants of God and going to do things for his
- 25:30people. And so, yes, even when he does
- 25:35give us Us what we need. It's not necessarily for us.
- 25:39It's it's for his kingdom. Yeah.
- 25:44Yeah. So good.
- 25:45And it takes a while to grasp that.
- 25:49Yes. Buzz.
- 25:53And that'll be surrender. Yeah, yes.
- 25:57For sure. For sure.
- 25:59But trust him. Yes.
- 26:01And I think, you know, trusting that's Goes along with that
- 26:07surrender, right? Because you can't really trust
- 26:09unless you let go and so that is a hard thing to do but when we
- 26:15do we get through and can see and overcome and see that other
- 26:23sides. So well, so good and
- 26:26encouraging. So I know that you are the
- 26:29founder of the wild communicators and you just want
- 26:35to talk Briefly on that and and then we'll finish up with a
- 26:39little take away. So the well communicate says,
- 26:42we're a collective a diverse Collective of Christian
- 26:47communicators, all women from all over the us and we talked on
- 26:54a variety of subjects, where podcasters were authors speakers
- 27:00teachers worship leaders. And so we have a website.
- 27:05The well communicates Dot-com. And so we are available to be
- 27:09booked for any event that you might have any kind of teaching
- 27:15that you might have. We also have a number of online
- 27:19resources available, in terms of coaching sessions, kind of
- 27:26Academy courses Bible studies, all sorts of things.
- 27:30So yeah, check us out because it's 29 women from all over.
- 27:36Over the us all different walks of life.
- 27:38And so I really am excited about what we're going to do this
- 27:42year. I had to take a few months off
- 27:44needless to say with everything going on, but I'm really excited
- 27:49to start planning some, some things for us to do together.
