- 0:31welcome to the sunday
- 0:32sunday sunday night crossfit talk
- 0:35We're here, just Carolyn and I tonight,
- 0:38as Jamie is busy putting
- 0:40her gym back together after
- 0:44an amazing remodel.
- 0:46But now she has to get
- 0:47everything back on the floor,
- 0:48get everything in place, mop up, clean up,
- 0:51do all that kind of stuff.
- 0:52And so she is still at her
- 0:54gym right now doing all that stuff,
- 0:56and we feel bad.
- 0:57I feel bad.
- 0:58I know what that's like.
- 1:00You're so tired from doing all that work,
- 1:02and now you have to kind of
- 1:04clean it all up.
- 1:07She's probably just sneaking
- 1:08in a few workouts here and there.
- 1:09I did see her go on a rig at
- 1:10some point this week.
- 1:11She had to try it out, right?
- 1:14Yeah.
- 1:15Things are moving along, though.
- 1:17Yeah.
- 1:18So don't forget to like and
- 1:19subscribe to the channel.
- 1:21Make sure you hit that
- 1:21notifier so you're the
- 1:22first to know when new stuff comes out.
- 1:24And if you listen to us on
- 1:25Spotify or Amazon Music or
- 1:28iTunes or any of those podcast platforms,
- 1:31make sure you leave us a
- 1:31five-star review.
- 1:32Tell everybody how much you
- 1:33like what we do here
- 1:36because we like having you here.
- 1:38with that uh we'll get
- 1:39started on everything just
- 1:41to get caught up on some
- 1:43things I saw an instagram
- 1:46story that I wanted to
- 1:47share real quick and it's
- 1:51kind of like um what
- 1:53happens when a pro hockey
- 1:58player goes for a quick
- 2:02little casual skate
- 2:05It was very casual.
- 2:06My sister's filming,
- 2:07so I can't really skate very fast.
- 2:12But you are passing people
- 2:13like they are standing still.
- 2:18I mean,
- 2:20she is just zooming by every single
- 2:24person on this track.
- 2:26My sister's holding her own, though.
- 2:30Did, did she ever play hockey or as a kid?
- 2:34She played a little bit up
- 2:36until maybe she was nine years old.
- 2:38So we go like maybe once a,
- 2:40once a winter where we'll skate together.
- 2:43This is my older sister.
- 2:45So my twin played growing up.
- 2:48She was a goalie, but only me.
- 2:52So, and this is from your perspective.
- 2:56Yes.
- 2:57No, no.
- 2:57Yeah, this is my perspective.
- 2:59This is just me holding my
- 3:00phone and just gliding out there.
- 3:04Just gliding.
- 3:06It's a cute little trail
- 3:09path that they'll do every winter.
- 3:13But some people don't
- 3:14understand that the inside
- 3:16track should be for...
- 3:19like faster because you'll
- 3:21see some people like
- 3:22holding hands just like
- 3:24going very close to the
- 3:25edge and you'll see here
- 3:26someone learning how to
- 3:27skate and I'm like oh okay
- 3:33but it was fun so is it
- 3:35typical to um is it typical
- 3:39to have a track in canada
- 3:40or I've never seen a track before
- 3:44So a lot of times it's just
- 3:45like outdoor rinks, um,
- 3:47like more just like people
- 3:48just go in a circle.
- 3:49There's a few of them that
- 3:51will be like that.
- 3:51Or some people will go on a pond, um,
- 3:55but this is like a nice
- 3:56figure eight and it's just like maybe.
- 3:58Ten minutes from here.
- 3:59Not even from my house, um,
- 4:02down the street from my gym
- 4:04at cross the Coliseum.
- 4:05So it's, it's easy to get to.
- 4:08I discovered it a few,
- 4:09few years ago and I've been going every,
- 4:11every winter since.
- 4:13Cause it's cute.
- 4:13And like during the day they
- 4:15have these like, um,
- 4:16plastic chairs that people can, um,
- 4:21push around if they don't
- 4:21know how to skate and but
- 4:23so during the day it gets
- 4:25pretty packed but if you go
- 4:26to the evening time like at
- 4:28nine thirty um the building
- 4:31beside it closes all those
- 4:33plastic thingies go back
- 4:35into the building so that
- 4:36normally means that the
- 4:37people that are like more
- 4:38learning how to skate are
- 4:39not no longer on the ice at
- 4:41that point and then they
- 4:42have the lights on and some
- 4:43music playing so it's just nice it's fun
- 4:46So you mentioned like people
- 4:48don't know to let the
- 4:49inside for the fast skaters.
- 4:51Jeffrey Birchfield says,
- 4:52sounds like the roadway.
- 4:53Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:55That's what it, you're just like,
- 4:56what are you doing?
- 5:01DR, I think D Reed says ankle skater.
- 5:05I don't even know what that means.
- 5:09Well, like normally like ankle benders,
- 5:11the people that are like,
- 5:12just kind of like not very good skaters.
- 5:16That's a term that we'll use.
- 5:18I don't necessarily say ankle skater.
- 5:20I'll use ankle bender.
- 5:22It's just because the skates
- 5:24bend at their ankles and
- 5:24they're not as proficient.
- 5:28When I was a kid,
- 5:29we were at the rink every day.
- 5:31I haven't been skating.
- 5:33It's been so long since I've
- 5:35been on the ice.
- 5:39Does it fill your cup to do that?
- 5:45I mean, I'm
- 5:46I like skating,
- 5:49but I'm probably going like
- 5:50forty percent speed.
- 5:52It's like I like I like
- 5:53skating fast and just kind
- 5:55of feeling like the wind in
- 5:56your eyes and stuff.
- 5:57But just kind of skating
- 5:58with a view is just different.
- 6:00Like, it's nice.
- 6:01What I miss about hockey is
- 6:02more my teammates.
- 6:04Yeah.
- 6:05Yeah.
- 6:06Yeah.
- 6:06I loved I love feeling the
- 6:07wind in my face when I was
- 6:08skating like watery eyes.
- 6:10Yeah.
- 6:11Yeah.
- 6:12yeah I we didn't we just
- 6:14didn't have hockey where I
- 6:15grew up I if we would have
- 6:16I think that would have
- 6:17been maybe my number one
- 6:19sport I just I loved being
- 6:21on the ice it's fun um see
- 6:25I've had I've had a crazy
- 6:27weekend my my wife had her
- 6:29surgery on monday still is
- 6:32not able to get up
- 6:35get up on her own out of a
- 6:36chair or anything like that
- 6:38so I'm having to lift her
- 6:39um whenever she needs to go
- 6:41to the bathroom or uh get
- 6:44dressed anything like that
- 6:47um man it it is it is
- 6:51taking it out a lot of work
- 6:53yeah last night I got
- 6:55called three times in the
- 6:56middle of the night to come
- 6:58get her to go to the
- 6:59bathroom and just trying to
- 7:02get sleep is really tough
- 7:05we have a bed in the middle
- 7:06of our living room which is
- 7:07very unusual and it it
- 7:08takes away a lot of space
- 7:10to kind of like do things
- 7:11and we are together twenty
- 7:13four seven now because
- 7:15she's right there all the
- 7:16time uh but we're making it
- 7:19through and she's getting
- 7:20stronger like I can tell
- 7:22the last couple days I
- 7:23don't have to lift as hard
- 7:24to get her up so I think
- 7:27tomorrow will be one week
- 7:29Is it her strong knee or her weaker knee?
- 7:33Because she has both of them
- 7:34that she would need to do, right?
- 7:36Correct.
- 7:38So just getting up because
- 7:40she's got to go on to one leg,
- 7:43almost like a pistol, I guess,
- 7:44coming out from sitting down.
- 7:46Yeah,
- 7:46so she has her surgically repaired
- 7:49knee and she has her weak knee.
- 7:52So neither of them are good.
- 7:55And what the PT people have
- 7:56been telling her, like,
- 7:57she has to start trusting
- 7:58the surgically repaired
- 7:59knee because it is strong.
- 8:01It is stronger than what she had before.
- 8:04It's just pain tolerance as
- 8:08that's healing.
- 8:10But we have her on this
- 8:11machine that bends her leg
- 8:12three times a day for an hour each.
- 8:16And she's up to like seventy percent angle,
- 8:19seventy degree angle on the bend.
- 8:22So she's doing really well there.
- 8:25And yeah, we're on the way to recovery.
- 8:29Hopefully we get we can get
- 8:31her back upstairs where she can shower,
- 8:33where she can sleep in her
- 8:35own bed within the week.
- 8:38That's what that's what the
- 8:38goal is this coming week.
- 8:42that's a good goal just a
- 8:43little bit more every day
- 8:45yeah um d reed says what
- 8:48province are you from
- 8:49carolyn the great province
- 8:51of ontario that's a big one
- 8:55yeah I used to we used to
- 8:58go up to toronto all the
- 8:59time when I was a kid so
- 9:01I'm from sarnia ontario
- 9:02which is uh across the
- 9:05border from port here on
- 9:06michigan like ten minute
- 9:07drive to port here on
- 9:07michigan about an hour from
- 9:09detroit that's where I grew up yeah
- 9:12Well, that was beautiful.
- 9:17And that's in Toronto, the skate.
- 9:21Technically, it's a city called Etobicoke.
- 9:24That's where I live.
- 9:25I'm on the border of Etobicoke and Toronto,
- 9:28but it's southwest of Toronto.
- 9:33By late go birds.
- 9:35Yeah,
- 9:36I'll go birds this week because I
- 9:37hate the Packers.
- 9:40But we'll see next week.
- 9:43I've converted into a Bills
- 9:44fan for the playoffs.
- 9:50It used to be that Toronto
- 9:51was pretty much like home for Bills fans.
- 9:54It is.
- 9:55That makes sense.
- 9:58And they played well today.
- 9:59Oh, yeah.
- 9:59Real well.
- 10:04Their next game is going to be tough,
- 10:05though.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:07so I'm I'm going to skip
- 10:09around on the rundown that
- 10:09we have uh because we were
- 10:11talking about this before
- 10:12we went live you sent me a
- 10:14link to a podcast I've I am
- 10:18about a little over halfway
- 10:20through it it's got to be
- 10:22one of the most enjoyable
- 10:23podcasts I have watched in
- 10:25a long time because a lot
- 10:27of times when I'm watching
- 10:28a podcast I'm I'm
- 10:29information seeking um for
- 10:32this show or other shows but this was
- 10:36justin madaris's channel
- 10:38with dallin pepper and
- 10:40jason hopper and the three
- 10:42of them just sitting around
- 10:44shooting the breeze and I
- 10:48have been laughing so hard
- 10:51they are making fun of each
- 10:52other they're ripping on
- 10:54each other they're telling
- 10:55stories that are incredible um
- 11:02The one highlight for me was
- 11:05Jason Hopper always would
- 11:07dive into people's DMs and talk smack.
- 11:11He did it to Matt Fraser
- 11:12before he knew him if he
- 11:14would beat him in a workout,
- 11:15like in the open.
- 11:17He would send a DM to Matt.
- 11:19Then when they met,
- 11:20Matt opens up his DMs and
- 11:22he sees all the stuff that
- 11:23Jason had sent to him in the past.
- 11:26And then the next...
- 11:28The next thing he tells is
- 11:29that when Luke Parker was on The Bachelor,
- 11:32he was really into that season,
- 11:34and he was blasting Luke in
- 11:36the DMs the entire season.
- 11:39Runs into Luke Parker at
- 11:41Atlas Games during the
- 11:43COVID year where Atlas gets canceled.
- 11:45They're on the same flight back home,
- 11:48and there's an empty seat next to Luke.
- 11:51So Hopper has all these
- 11:52questions for him about the season.
- 11:54They sit down together on the plane.
- 11:56He's answering all these questions.
- 11:58Luke asked Hopper for his IG account.
- 12:02Luke goes, Oh my gosh,
- 12:03I have a message from you.
- 12:05And it's all these things
- 12:07blasting him for being a
- 12:09douche on the bachelor.
- 12:11And, and Jason's like,
- 12:14I am so red and so embarrassed.
- 12:16I had forgotten.
- 12:17I had done all that.
- 12:20I can't even imagine like
- 12:21where you would come up
- 12:22with just sending DMS to people,
- 12:25blasting them.
- 12:27on a reality.
- 12:28I just, my mind doesn't work that way,
- 12:30but it was a hilarious story.
- 12:32And it just goes to prove you,
- 12:34you can't hit unsend.
- 12:36Like once you send that message,
- 12:38it could come back and bite
- 12:39you at any point in time.
- 12:43Well,
- 12:43back then they didn't have the unsend
- 12:45button.
- 12:45So it depends how long ago
- 12:49those messages were, but
- 12:52It's a good podcast,
- 12:53and Justin does a good job
- 12:55of leading the
- 12:56conversations and asking
- 12:57some fun questions.
- 13:00Yeah, I really enjoyed it.
- 13:01So if you haven't watched it,
- 13:03hop on Justin's channel and
- 13:05give that a listen.
- 13:08Yeah,
- 13:08and apparently it's going to be at
- 13:09least a three-part series
- 13:11where they're going to
- 13:11rotate between the three
- 13:14channels leading up to
- 13:16Wadapalooza and one show after.
- 13:19it would be cool if he
- 13:20continued and got a few
- 13:22other friends on and like
- 13:24shoot the shit with them.
- 13:27Just cause it's like,
- 13:28it's a different type of
- 13:31podcast than just someone
- 13:32interviewing and asking them questions.
- 13:34Like they're more just
- 13:34sharing experiences and stories, which,
- 13:37which I enjoyed.
- 13:40Yeah, there was a,
- 13:42There was a part of a behind
- 13:44the scenes at West coast
- 13:45classic last year that
- 13:47Savan had done where it's
- 13:50just a Jacob Heppner,
- 13:52Brent Fikowski and Pat
- 13:53Vellner just sitting in a
- 13:55tent talking and nobody's
- 13:57asking them questions.
- 13:58He just recorded the three
- 13:59of them talking to each other.
- 14:02And I thought that was one
- 14:04of the best things I had
- 14:05seen in any of those shows ever, uh,
- 14:10because it was unscripted.
- 14:11It was just the three of
- 14:12them talking to each other.
- 14:15That's what you want to see
- 14:16is those types of
- 14:17conversations and just real
- 14:21behind the scenes.
- 14:23Uh,
- 14:24Jay Burt says that was karma for hopper.
- 14:26It sure was.
- 14:29But I guess they're cool now
- 14:31and friends and everything.
- 14:34And I know I've talked to Luke.
- 14:36He took a hit when he was on The Bachelor.
- 14:38And the producers really
- 14:40made him look bad.
- 14:43But I never watch an episode,
- 14:46so I don't really know anything about it.
- 14:48But there's that.
- 14:52So one thing I did not
- 14:53prepare is... I'm going to
- 14:56look it up right now.
- 14:58CrossFit this week announced
- 14:59their CrossFit Athlete Council.
- 15:04And it is split into three groups.
- 15:09And there we go.
- 15:14So I'll share my screen real
- 15:15quick with that.
- 15:21It's split into three groups.
- 15:24The first one is individuals and coaches.
- 15:28This is Olivia Grimsland, Spencer Pancheck,
- 15:32Taylor Self, Colton Mertens, Ryan Dickey,
- 15:35and Yasmin Arroyo.
- 15:41I know three, and I might know Yasmin,
- 15:45but I'm not sure.
- 15:46I know Spencer, Taylor, and Colton,
- 15:49and I might know Yasmin,
- 15:50but I do not know the other two.
- 15:55Do you, Carolyn?
- 15:55Carolyn?
- 15:56Yeah, I'm not familiar with those three.
- 16:00I don't think so.
- 16:04And then affiliate and team
- 16:06is Andrew McLaughlin, Gio Benitez,
- 16:10Matthew Young, Justin Reminter,
- 16:16Mahmoud El Zayed, and Harry Jaeger.
- 16:22I'm not familiar with any of them as well.
- 16:25yeah me neither and then
- 16:27finally we have divisional
- 16:29uh with carly del demonico
- 16:33rebecca voight-miller
- 16:34nathan black jason grubb
- 16:36tim murray and john kim uh
- 16:41I know three of the three
- 16:42of the six there as well so
- 16:48I know I feel like I recognize four names
- 16:53Tim Murray, Jason, Rebecca, Carly.
- 16:58I don't know.
- 16:59Carly.
- 16:59And then personally don't
- 17:02know much about John Kim and Nathan black,
- 17:05but yeah, like you could have,
- 17:06like basically you could
- 17:07have given your name out, um,
- 17:11for these divisions, as long as you had,
- 17:15I think as long as you had
- 17:16maybe an L one and you were
- 17:20at an affiliate maybe, um,
- 17:24you could give your name.
- 17:26And then from there,
- 17:28I remember I got an email asking to vote.
- 17:30I didn't know half of the
- 17:31people that had given their names.
- 17:34Um, but you could vote from there.
- 17:35So these are just what was, um,
- 17:38voted by the community.
- 17:41And I don't even know if
- 17:41everyone received that
- 17:43email for just people that
- 17:44have their level ones and
- 17:45up that would receive that email.
- 17:48Um, not quite sure.
- 17:52Lex is saying only four
- 17:53women and no women on the
- 17:54affiliate representation
- 17:55side with a hand to the face.
- 18:00And we talked about that in
- 18:01our text for there being
- 18:03eighteen people voted and
- 18:04only four women.
- 18:06When this is.
- 18:08When CrossFit is very.
- 18:13even male-female in the
- 18:16sport and in the methodology.
- 18:18You go to CrossFit gyms,
- 18:19you see as many women as you see men.
- 18:22You see as many women affiliate owners.
- 18:25I thought that was a little surprising.
- 18:28And even for the athlete side of things,
- 18:31like some of the standards
- 18:32that might be in place for
- 18:34the woman in terms of
- 18:34heights and things that you
- 18:36may not think about as a
- 18:37male athlete could be of
- 18:40interest in terms of on
- 18:44some of these teams.
- 18:47So Sarah Cooper is asking,
- 18:49do you know how many women applied?
- 18:51I saw the list.
- 18:53Did I have...
- 18:55a time to go through it and
- 18:56like study how many women applied.
- 18:58It was a long,
- 18:59long list of people who applied.
- 19:02Um, so I think just like any voting thing,
- 19:08name recognition, um,
- 19:10get you a long way in this.
- 19:12Um, but yeah.
- 19:17And I wonder if like this
- 19:20type of voting will happen
- 19:21every year or if these are
- 19:23the members for a certain
- 19:24amount of years.
- 19:28and what their engagement
- 19:30will be like with CrossFit,
- 19:33how often they'll meet and
- 19:34stuff like that.
- 19:34I'm curious to see what that
- 19:35follow-through will
- 19:36actually be like this year
- 19:38and if more people will
- 19:39present themselves the
- 19:40following years as they
- 19:41kind of know a little bit
- 19:42more about the position.
- 19:46Patrick Clark comes in with
- 19:48Nathan Black as a games judge as well.
- 19:51So that gives him a unique
- 19:53perspective as well.
- 20:00Yeah, I hope it works.
- 20:04I know the last time they
- 20:05had these together,
- 20:06they didn't really seek
- 20:07much counsel from them.
- 20:11But I'm hoping that that
- 20:12changes with this.
- 20:14And knowing a couple people on the list,
- 20:17I know they're either going
- 20:18to be vocal about not being
- 20:19included in decisions or
- 20:21talk to about decisions.
- 20:23Or there's a couple that I
- 20:24could personally reach out
- 20:25to pretty easily and find
- 20:27out how it's going.
- 20:31Yeah.
- 20:31So anxious to know how this goes.
- 20:35For sure.
- 20:38The only thing I'm going to
- 20:39say about the female piece
- 20:41is that a lot of times on
- 20:44the show we talk because we
- 20:45we do have a female perspective.
- 20:47You and Jamie compete at the
- 20:48highest levels in the
- 20:50female division of this
- 20:51sport and that sometimes
- 20:54the cap times or the weights aren't.
- 20:59as accurate in depicting the,
- 21:01what should happen as the men's,
- 21:03because I think they use
- 21:04more male testers than they
- 21:06do female testers.
- 21:09And, um, I think,
- 21:11I hope that doesn't become
- 21:13a trend because I,
- 21:15I hope that people are seeing this where,
- 21:19you know,
- 21:19we're seeing that of the thirty athletes,
- 21:23twenty-eight men finished it,
- 21:25but only five women.
- 21:27And so you're getting,
- 21:28you are not getting the
- 21:29same stimulus if the men
- 21:32are finishing it and the women aren't.
- 21:35It's just hard to find
- 21:36testers that are not currently competing.
- 21:39Right.
- 21:40Um,
- 21:40that that's a difficult part is you
- 21:43almost need to hire a small team of like,
- 21:46let's call it two male,
- 21:47two females that are not
- 21:48like not affiliated with training camps.
- 21:50And you almost pay them
- 21:52during the season to not
- 21:54compete and be your testers
- 21:55for different stages.
- 21:58But if you're a good programmer,
- 22:00you should know that.
- 22:02like roughly time caps and
- 22:03um if you're looking at
- 22:05things within the crossfit
- 22:07space like you should be
- 22:08able to make good calls on
- 22:11weights and stuff like that
- 22:13sometimes they'll get it
- 22:13wrong but for the most part
- 22:15if you're looking at things
- 22:18and seeing what's happening
- 22:19in the community you should
- 22:20be a good enough programmer
- 22:21to do that even without testers yeah um
- 22:29lex just let everybody know
- 22:31that she was on the dac
- 22:32before um and lynn was
- 22:35surprised yeah and lex will
- 22:39be open and honest and tell
- 22:40you that they didn't get to
- 22:41give a lot of input uh when
- 22:43she was there so um so we'll see
- 22:52So next up, I wanted to talk about,
- 22:55before we get into the rule book,
- 22:56which will take up most of the show,
- 22:59NorCal was added as an
- 23:00in-person qualifier very last minute.
- 23:05In fact,
- 23:06the online qualifier for it had
- 23:08already started when it was
- 23:10named another in-person semifinal.
- 23:13Now,
- 23:13they did extend the due date for
- 23:16submissions for that to give more time,
- 23:20but it...
- 23:22The impact of this is that
- 23:25there are now eighteen
- 23:26spots going to in person,
- 23:29in person qualifying events or semifinals,
- 23:33and there are only twelve
- 23:35from the online affiliate semifinal.
- 23:43So my question to you as an athlete,
- 23:46we're shrinking the it
- 23:47seems like we're shrinking
- 23:49the holes to get through
- 23:51the qualification process.
- 23:53from every angle,
- 23:55how do you feel as an
- 23:56athlete having a legit shot
- 23:59and making it to the games?
- 24:04Me individually would be
- 24:06through the online portion.
- 24:09Like I've always done
- 24:10extremely well online through the open.
- 24:12I've gone top five twice.
- 24:14I've won the Atlas games
- 24:16online a few years ago.
- 24:17Like I,
- 24:17I compete a lot online over the years.
- 24:19Like my route that I'm going
- 24:21to try to do is,
- 24:22through an online portion in
- 24:25person is going to be very
- 24:26difficult for top two.
- 24:28Like I,
- 24:29I don't see myself getting a top two,
- 24:31like that many of the events,
- 24:34especially if there's like, ten,
- 24:35fifteen athletes from all
- 24:37around the world at them.
- 24:38Like I'm just speaking for
- 24:39myself and where I am in my career.
- 24:43like fitness wise is I would
- 24:45try to do that.
- 24:46Um, but I don't like,
- 24:49it's completely different
- 24:50than during the sanctional year,
- 24:53because you had the open in
- 24:54October and you had all of
- 24:56these sanctional events, very spread out.
- 24:58And you had almost like many,
- 25:00many opportunities to do a lot of them.
- 25:03Now you have a season where
- 25:04you have the online a
- 25:06little bit towards the starter, like very,
- 25:09very close to a lot of the competitions.
- 25:12And yeah,
- 25:13It's basically going to come
- 25:14down to how much money you have.
- 25:16How much time do you have to
- 25:17travel to all these things?
- 25:19You can't do many of them.
- 25:21You really can't because you
- 25:21can't go to Africa one weekend.
- 25:23Then you go to Europe.
- 25:23Then you go to North America.
- 25:25You have the online semifinals.
- 25:26So you have to pick and
- 25:27choose maybe at tops three at most.
- 25:31And even that I think would be very,
- 25:33very difficult.
- 25:34And if you pick the wrong one,
- 25:35you're shit out of luck.
- 25:37There's going to be a lot of
- 25:38athletes that will not
- 25:39qualify that think that they will.
- 25:42Like a very, very good
- 25:44like games athletes because
- 25:46top twelve online is not a
- 25:49gimme for any athletes
- 25:50besides maybe three or four
- 25:53of them on each like male and females.
- 25:56The rest is all workout
- 25:57dependent of what it is online.
- 26:02So there are a lot of people
- 26:03are banking on the online format,
- 26:05but they might find
- 26:06themselves having to travel
- 26:07to these events and just
- 26:08run out of time because you
- 26:10have all these events going
- 26:11on within not even two
- 26:12months of each other.
- 26:14Pretty, pretty tight.
- 26:16You just can't go to all of them.
- 26:18So I think there's going to
- 26:20be a and then I don't know
- 26:21who's who's actually competing,
- 26:22who's not.
- 26:23That's another thing.
- 26:24But like that's out of the
- 26:25control right now.
- 26:28But just in terms of.
- 26:30qualification process I
- 26:31think it's a very difficult
- 26:33one um in terms of bubble
- 26:38athletes like myself for
- 26:39sure because like we're
- 26:42like yeah and it's very
- 26:44expensive like it's just
- 26:45like it's not worth it for
- 26:46me to travel to these
- 26:47places knowing that I'm
- 26:48most likely not getting top
- 26:49two like I have work to do
- 26:51I'm a teacher um like I'm
- 26:54not gonna go waste a
- 26:56thousand dollars or two grand to
- 27:00to compete at a bunch of them.
- 27:01And I think that's kind of the,
- 27:04the biggest, the biggest change for me is,
- 27:07and Lex kind of says it
- 27:08here and wasting money, having to travel.
- 27:10You have one bad workout.
- 27:11You're out.
- 27:12Yeah.
- 27:13True.
- 27:14What we had last year was two big events,
- 27:19twenty people between the
- 27:20two events got to go.
- 27:22You had to pay for one trip
- 27:23as an athlete to go qualify and
- 27:27You still had to put your
- 27:27best foot forward.
- 27:29You couldn't have a bad weekend,
- 27:31but at least you had a
- 27:33realistic shot with, with what was it?
- 27:36Twelve in the east and eight in the west.
- 27:40but you had the strength of
- 27:42field play a factor.
- 27:44Now the strength of field has no factor.
- 27:46You can go to a competition
- 27:48and the strength of field
- 27:49is significantly higher than another one.
- 27:51And you just happened to choose the wrong,
- 27:54the wrong one where everyone was at.
- 27:56And then let's say you finish,
- 27:58I don't know, top five at that one.
- 28:00It doesn't matter.
- 28:00You need top two.
- 28:01If you know,
- 28:03like as long as no one that's
- 28:04going there has qualified
- 28:06previously through another competition,
- 28:10um,
- 28:11Yeah.
- 28:11It's just,
- 28:12it doesn't take into account the
- 28:13strength of field.
- 28:14Then you have restrictions
- 28:15on some regions and not in others,
- 28:18which you have three,
- 28:20three events that have restrictions.
- 28:21The one in Asia, the one,
- 28:27then the East and the West one.
- 28:31It's Africa and then the East and West.
- 28:33Oh yeah.
- 28:34Africa.
- 28:35Yeah.
- 28:35Asia is open to the world.
- 28:37Okay.
- 28:37Yeah.
- 28:38Africa with the renegade games.
- 28:42Yeah, that's the one.
- 28:43Renegade Games and then two
- 28:45of the North America ones
- 28:46being restricted there.
- 28:48But then the NorCal one that they have,
- 28:50they added it right after
- 28:51the like the syndicate one.
- 28:52So like,
- 28:53let's say someone is right on the
- 28:54borderline of syndicate the
- 28:56following weekend.
- 28:57If you didn't get your spot there, like,
- 28:59are you just going to get
- 29:00an invite to like to NorCal?
- 29:02Are they going to accept
- 29:03like different people that
- 29:04are high level athletes that were,
- 29:06let's say,
- 29:07third or fourth place at
- 29:08syndicate and didn't qualify?
- 29:09And all of a sudden you have
- 29:10a field of fifty athletes.
- 29:12at already at NorCal and they're like,
- 29:14people are going to be
- 29:15looking and scrambling and
- 29:16they're going to be asking
- 29:17all these people for their
- 29:18free invites because
- 29:19they're this person and
- 29:21they have this accomplishment.
- 29:23And it'll be just
- 29:24interesting to see what the
- 29:25event organizers do as
- 29:26these athletes didn't plan
- 29:28to not qualify online.
- 29:30And all of a sudden are
- 29:30stuck and wanting to do all
- 29:33these competitions.
- 29:34And let's say they didn't do
- 29:34their qualifiers because
- 29:36they all qualified different ways.
- 29:41Um,
- 29:41so it's just going to be interesting
- 29:42because like I said,
- 29:43the sanctional season was
- 29:44spread out so much that you
- 29:46could pick multiple.
- 29:49And I just don't see people
- 29:51being able to do that many
- 29:52with them being so close together.
- 29:55And especially if people are
- 29:56banking on the online portion,
- 29:58then there's like,
- 29:59there's a few of them that
- 29:59are right before, like right before,
- 30:01right after,
- 30:02which means you don't really
- 30:03want to do those ones.
- 30:04If you're banking on the online.
- 30:07I have a, I have a followup to that,
- 30:08but I want to address a
- 30:09couple of things in the
- 30:10comments real quick.
- 30:11And that is, um,
- 30:14Patrick Clark says I had
- 30:15six athletes reach out to me,
- 30:17high level semis athletes
- 30:18to ask for help to find
- 30:19sponsors for this season.
- 30:23Lynn comes in with yes.
- 30:24And a lot more go fund me is
- 30:26this season for sure.
- 30:29Um,
- 30:30And then this one, Vi,
- 30:32is the Mayhem Classic only
- 30:33being for Mayhem athletes a
- 30:34real thing or did that turn
- 30:35out to be false?
- 30:37I made that up last week in
- 30:38my frustration and admitted
- 30:40it right afterwards that I
- 30:42was just making it up
- 30:43because these third-party
- 30:45competitions seem to be
- 30:47able to do whatever they want to do.
- 30:48So I was being facetious in that moment.
- 30:51If you've heard that elsewhere,
- 30:53sorry if I started something,
- 30:54but I was just trying to be
- 30:56over the top making a point with that.
- 31:00but like Patrick's right.
- 31:01Like sponsorship is going to
- 31:03help a lot of these athletes.
- 31:04Like I don't have people
- 31:05that's paying my trips to
- 31:06go to any of this.
- 31:07So it's like, it's a lot of pocket.
- 31:10So it really comes down to,
- 31:11it's a rich sport and it's
- 31:12who's living at home with, you know,
- 31:14their parents and can afford to,
- 31:16or their significant others
- 31:17supports that they can just
- 31:19go and travel as they do this full time.
- 31:21And.
- 31:24So I have a question for you
- 31:25because this was, this was kind of a,
- 31:31point I made at some point
- 31:32in one of my riffs but I
- 31:33wanted to ask you this
- 31:34question with the way that
- 31:37we have these multiple
- 31:38seasons now and you can add
- 31:41reps ahead in that you can
- 31:42have wfp you can have uh
- 31:44the crossfit game season
- 31:45then you have this
- 31:46off-season stuff that
- 31:47happens is it going to be
- 31:52on the athletes
- 31:53responsibility to change
- 31:55the way they train
- 31:57Like the days of going six
- 31:59hours a day and beating
- 32:00yourself into the ground to
- 32:02be ready for one
- 32:03competition three months from now,
- 32:06I think those days are gone now.
- 32:09You're going to have to be
- 32:10ready in some state more
- 32:14frequently through the year
- 32:15if you want to participate
- 32:18in all this stuff that's going on.
- 32:21Yeah.
- 32:21I think there's a lot of
- 32:22people in the space that
- 32:23over train though.
- 32:24Like there's so many people,
- 32:25like I've always just
- 32:27trained all year long and
- 32:28basically like I'm ready to
- 32:31go any competition anytime.
- 32:33Like I don't really have any
- 32:34huge peaks or huge times of
- 32:36the year that I'm feeling very,
- 32:39very unfit.
- 32:40Um,
- 32:42but the way that people have trained,
- 32:44like they've taken huge off seasons.
- 32:46And I mean, some, most of them are like,
- 32:48Oh, I'm not right.
- 32:49Like I'm not peaked for
- 32:50rogue because I'm coming off the games.
- 32:52I always think that's
- 32:53bullshit because like rogue
- 32:54has so much money on the line.
- 32:55And I just think people say
- 32:56that they're not ready, but like,
- 32:57they're still training for
- 32:58all of these comps.
- 32:59So I don't know.
- 33:00I just think there's a lot
- 33:01of people that over-train they,
- 33:03the season still is, you know,
- 33:05for the majority of the part,
- 33:08you need to be ready in that,
- 33:10may june area like the open
- 33:13for most is the one percent
- 33:15is still pretty you know
- 33:17quote easy for the top
- 33:20athletes in the sport so
- 33:22really you're thinking
- 33:22about the semis and like
- 33:25in that end of April, May, early June.
- 33:30So unless you're, you know, Jeff Tia,
- 33:33those athletes that doesn't
- 33:35matter for the programming,
- 33:36like most people are
- 33:37looking to peak at that
- 33:38point so that they can make
- 33:41their way to the,
- 33:42like even just qualify for these,
- 33:44you know, main events like the games.
- 33:46Cause yeah,
- 33:47The field is just too deep
- 33:49that to just show up there
- 33:50and hope for the best.
- 33:53And then most of the time,
- 33:54the main event's been in, you know,
- 33:56in August.
- 33:57So you still can take an off season,
- 33:59like right after that a little bit.
- 34:01Or I would say most of the
- 34:03off season for most people
- 34:05should probably be around that November,
- 34:08December, early January.
- 34:09Yeah.
- 34:10unless you're part of the
- 34:11WFP and that's where their
- 34:13championship is.
- 34:13So that's what I'm saying right out.
- 34:14Okay.
- 34:15So right after that December time,
- 34:17but you just have to choose, like,
- 34:18are you doing a water Palooza in January?
- 34:20Are you going to like,
- 34:21cause that one technically
- 34:22is not involved within any
- 34:25of the spaces right now.
- 34:26So you just have to choose what,
- 34:28what do you value where you
- 34:30can compete in and stuff.
- 34:33It's,
- 34:35I always hear people say we
- 34:36want to professionalize the sport.
- 34:37We want to professionalize the sport.
- 34:39And then when people start
- 34:40to professionalize the sport or try to,
- 34:43we all go to this.
- 34:45Well,
- 34:46I can't peak for this or I can't peak
- 34:48for that.
- 34:48Well,
- 34:48if you want to professionalize the sport,
- 34:50most professional sports go
- 34:53weekly or biweekly for a
- 34:56period of time during the year.
- 34:58And then you get an off season.
- 35:01Like your hockey season,
- 35:03you played multiple games a week, right?
- 35:07And then you did get an off-season.
- 35:10But the off-season, yeah,
- 35:12you're training more in the off-season.
- 35:14Like during the year,
- 35:15you mostly just maintained
- 35:16and you weren't training as much.
- 35:18Our sport's kind of
- 35:19different because our sport
- 35:20is working out,
- 35:23which is different than
- 35:24like skill-based sports.
- 35:26Because you can take an
- 35:27off-season away from the
- 35:28sport while still training.
- 35:31if that makes sense.
- 35:32Like,
- 35:32and like most of the time you're off
- 35:33season is when you're
- 35:34working super hard and just
- 35:36kind of building your base
- 35:38and building your strengths
- 35:38so that you can maintain it
- 35:40within your sport.
- 35:41Um, it's hard, it's hard to know, but like,
- 35:46I think, I think for the most part,
- 35:49like if you just stay at a
- 35:51volume and you listen to
- 35:52your body and you stay injury free,
- 35:55like you should be able to
- 35:58throw down almost whenever
- 35:59you want like not
- 36:00necessarily like do
- 36:01competitions every weekend
- 36:02because I think that's very
- 36:04very hard on the central
- 36:06nervous system but if you
- 36:07went like once every month
- 36:10or two I don't think that
- 36:10would kill people it's just
- 36:13money wise it's just so
- 36:14expensive and it's not
- 36:16worth it there just aren't
- 36:19any sponsors out there right now
- 36:24Uh,
- 36:24and CrossFit says a time to sell feet
- 36:26picks for him.
- 36:27So yeah, you got to find a way, I guess.
- 36:32Uh, Judy Reed,
- 36:33it's a positive that there
- 36:34are more opportunities now
- 36:35for athletes to compete and make money.
- 36:37I agree.
- 36:38And I,
- 36:38I don't think it's bad that we
- 36:40changed the way it's trained.
- 36:42I do think there's so much
- 36:44overtraining that maybe
- 36:45this is a way to get a
- 36:52that didn't come out right.
- 36:53But I know what you mean though.
- 36:55I mean, it makes sense.
- 36:56And there are a lot of
- 36:57opportunities for people to, you know,
- 37:00compete and, and get,
- 37:02get a name for themselves.
- 37:03And, you know, you,
- 37:06you pick and choose maybe
- 37:07like three or four main,
- 37:09main thing during main
- 37:11competitions during the year.
- 37:13Like you can, you can easily do that.
- 37:16Well,
- 37:16all these athletes that have signed
- 37:17up for the world fitness
- 37:18project are doing three comps for sure.
- 37:23most of them,
- 37:24if you're listening to them
- 37:25on different podcasts are
- 37:26doing the game season,
- 37:28that means they're doing
- 37:29some form of a semifinal
- 37:31and the games and those three, you know,
- 37:35nobody's turning down a
- 37:36free trip to rogue.
- 37:37No.
- 37:39And then you've got water pollute.
- 37:40Like,
- 37:41so it's starting to pile up and
- 37:44you're just going to have,
- 37:45Dallin said this on beyond
- 37:47the whiteboard or around the whiteboard.
- 37:50You have to train smarter if
- 37:53you're going to take on
- 37:54this volume of competitions.
- 37:56I agree.
- 37:56You have to train smarter.
- 37:57You have to listen to your body.
- 38:01People just over-train.
- 38:13Patrick says,
- 38:14the new formats with WFP and
- 38:15games benefit the Europeans
- 38:17who do compete a lot.
- 38:20probably because they've
- 38:20been training the right way
- 38:21for that style.
- 38:31And Larry,
- 38:32even though I'm an advocate for
- 38:33athletes being always ready,
- 38:34it still costs money for not many spots.
- 38:38It does.
- 38:40That's why a lot of athletes
- 38:43need to have a part-time or
- 38:44a full-time job because now
- 38:48this WFP has some guaranteed money,
- 38:51but it's not that much that
- 38:53you have a yearly income
- 38:55from that unless you have
- 38:56additional sponsorships.
- 38:58You have a lot of athletes
- 38:59that are going all in for a few years.
- 39:04You need more money than...
- 39:07than what even is out there.
- 39:09Because it's not that much.
- 39:11Like, besides the top few,
- 39:13you're not making much in CrossFit.
- 39:15Like,
- 39:15you have to find the right
- 39:16competitions that are worth
- 39:18paying where you can get money back.
- 39:22I think what the WFP has
- 39:23done is made it to pay for your travel.
- 39:26Essentially.
- 39:27Yeah.
- 39:27So you can at least go to
- 39:28these events and have that compensated.
- 39:31And then if you do well,
- 39:32you can make more.
- 39:35But...
- 39:36We'll see.
- 39:39And we have WFP later on the rundown,
- 39:41so we'll get to that in a second.
- 39:50Sarah,
- 39:50we're going to get to the Frog Grip
- 39:51stuff in a second.
- 39:55I assure you,
- 39:56it's in the rulebook stuff we have,
- 39:58which we're starting now.
- 40:01So,
- 40:01the CrossFit Games rulebook came out
- 40:04this week.
- 40:05These are my takeaways.
- 40:08If Carolyn has other ones
- 40:09she wants to throw in, it's all fine.
- 40:12Some of these are very obvious details,
- 40:15but I just wanted them out there.
- 40:17The first one is the Open is
- 40:18still twenty bucks.
- 40:20They did not raise the
- 40:21registration for the Open.
- 40:23It's still twenty dollars.
- 40:24I think that's good.
- 40:26the top one percent from the
- 40:28open go to semifinal go to
- 40:31semifinals uh age group top
- 40:34two percent or two hundred
- 40:36whichever is greater there
- 40:39are no regions and then I
- 40:41did put in parentheses
- 40:43unless an in-person
- 40:46semifinal wants to use the
- 40:47region which three of them
- 40:49already have invoked
- 40:53For the one percent,
- 40:54does it say whether it's
- 40:56one percent of people doing
- 40:59it's one percent of like
- 41:00the people doing the elite, right?
- 41:01You don't count any of the
- 41:02masters that don't have the same workouts,
- 41:04right?
- 41:04Do you know what I mean?
- 41:08So I would say it's
- 41:09everybody doing the same
- 41:10workout because when you
- 41:12sign up for the open,
- 41:13it's in your division.
- 41:14If you are fifty four or younger,
- 41:16you're doing the same workout R.X.,
- 41:19And so you would all be put
- 41:21into an elite leaderboard.
- 41:23Now they may be also split
- 41:25off into another
- 41:25leaderboard for another competition,
- 41:28but that counts as part of
- 41:29your overall number.
- 41:30Cool.
- 41:33Um, they've added a seven plus division.
- 41:37Uh,
- 41:38we affectionately like to call that the
- 41:39land of our scene rule here on our show.
- 41:43Uh,
- 41:43she has been advocating that for the
- 41:44last two years.
- 41:46Uh, she got it as a, um,
- 41:52a tryout last year at the games.
- 41:55They did not consider them champions,
- 41:58but they did let them participate.
- 42:00Now, this year,
- 42:01they get the full kit and caboodle.
- 42:09There are no judging
- 42:10qualifications needed for open videos,
- 42:14which kind of blew my mind because...
- 42:18None for the open,
- 42:18but when you get to the semis,
- 42:20it's ridiculous.
- 42:23What all you need?
- 42:29Larry's saying, Carolyn, cardio up,
- 42:32deadlift for the lift could
- 42:35be your moneymaker.
- 42:36Yes, we have some kind of lift this year.
- 42:41I like don't even deadlift ever.
- 42:45I rarely do it.
- 42:50open videos and must be made public.
- 42:53And they,
- 42:54you must own all the content on
- 42:56the videos.
- 42:57And I think this is a big one.
- 42:59So that means you cannot
- 43:00play music that you do not own.
- 43:05When they say like public,
- 43:06does that mean like,
- 43:07I can't put it on unlisted,
- 43:10but then put my link and it
- 43:11appears publicly.
- 43:13Like if you know, like last year,
- 43:15for instance, um,
- 43:18like you still have it on,
- 43:19like you can do,
- 43:20like you insert the link unlisted,
- 43:22but because you're entering
- 43:23it in the page,
- 43:27like it's your video still
- 43:28pops up because the link is there,
- 43:30but it's not like public on your YouTube.
- 43:32Does that make sense?
- 43:32What I'm asking?
- 43:34It makes sense,
- 43:34but the verbiage in the
- 43:36rulebook says must be made public.
- 43:39And public is a status.
- 43:41Unlisted is a status.
- 43:43Private is a status.
- 43:45Because the leaderboard is
- 43:46going to be locked.
- 43:47The reason I'm asking is
- 43:47because the leaderboard
- 43:48will be locked and you won't know scores,
- 43:50but if you have to put it
- 43:51public on YouTube,
- 43:53you're going to start
- 43:53seeing a lot of scores on
- 43:54YouTube being uploaded
- 43:56earlier on unless people
- 43:58just will change it after
- 43:59they've submitted and put it public.
- 44:02That's another way to...
- 44:05think about that I guess I
- 44:08think it just it has to be
- 44:11I mean I wouldn't risk it
- 44:13I'd I'd ask I wouldn't I
- 44:15don't want to risk it but
- 44:16at the same point like at
- 44:17the same time I feel like
- 44:18the scores are going to be
- 44:19so secretive that you don't
- 44:21want to have it just
- 44:22hanging around on your
- 44:23youtube publicly before the
- 44:25deadline if you're a top
- 44:29athlete yeah unless you don't
- 44:33I mean,
- 44:33you could switch it over to public at,
- 44:35if you want to risk it,
- 44:36like five minutes before.
- 44:38Yeah.
- 44:43Or Sarah says,
- 44:44I'm pretty sure you can publish,
- 44:46schedule a time to publish it.
- 44:49Cool.
- 44:50Yeah, I don't know all that.
- 44:50She is right.
- 44:51You can't do that.
- 44:54But I think the music thing
- 44:55is going to be big.
- 44:56Because you can actually get
- 44:58a zero score if they can't
- 45:01hear anything because of the music.
- 45:03Because if you get a strike from YouTube,
- 45:05they will remove all sound.
- 45:07And that means you can't
- 45:08hear the introduction,
- 45:09you can't hear any of the stuff,
- 45:12and you would get a zero.
- 45:13yeah,
- 45:13there's a lot of responsibility as an
- 45:15athlete when you're
- 45:16submitting your video to
- 45:17make sure that it's viewable in, you know,
- 45:21in the regions around the world.
- 45:22And, um,
- 45:24like it can be played before you
- 45:26submit it because we've
- 45:27seen that before where
- 45:28people sent links and they
- 45:30weren't the right ones and
- 45:31their season ended.
- 45:33Yeah.
- 45:36Uh,
- 45:36new scoring is the video is either good
- 45:38video valid with penalty or
- 45:42Zero score or invalid.
- 45:45And the difference between
- 45:46zero score and invalid is
- 45:48if you get a zero score,
- 45:50all your other scores
- 45:51remain on the leaderboard.
- 45:53If you get an invalid,
- 45:54all of your scores are
- 45:55removed from the leaderboard.
- 45:57So you wouldn't get a level
- 45:58for your next competition,
- 46:01which is the Community Cup, for instance,
- 46:03because for the Community Cup,
- 46:04you need all three scores.
- 46:05Correct.
- 46:06Correct.
- 46:12Appeals will be handled a
- 46:14different way this year.
- 46:15You'll actually get a link
- 46:16in the email with them
- 46:18questioning or telling you
- 46:20you've been penalized.
- 46:22You have to click on that
- 46:23link now to appeal.
- 46:28Semifinals,
- 46:30individual and age group must
- 46:33complete workouts at an
- 46:34affiliate if you're doing the online one.
- 46:39The leaderboard will be
- 46:40blind until the conclusion
- 46:41of the competition.
- 46:44I do like that.
- 46:47All athletes who qualify for
- 46:48the CrossFit Games will
- 46:49have to follow drug testing
- 46:51instructions provided by CrossFit.
- 46:54If they do not, they will be disqualified.
- 46:57So there is still drug
- 46:58testing even for the online semifinal.
- 47:02They're essentially,
- 47:03once the online semifinal
- 47:04is going to be over,
- 47:04the athletes that have
- 47:05qualified need to pass some
- 47:07sort of drug test before
- 47:08going to the actual games.
- 47:09That's going to be it.
- 47:11Well, it's a joke.
- 47:14CrossFit's going to give you
- 47:15instructions on how to
- 47:16submit your sample.
- 47:18Yeah.
- 47:18Or they're going to come and collect it.
- 47:19Just give your information
- 47:21and someone's going to,
- 47:22and then you have to give
- 47:27them a time when you're
- 47:28ready for the drug test.
- 47:29Yeah.
- 47:30Great.
- 47:33Uh,
- 47:33D Reed is the reason for public to get
- 47:36more eyes on the videos and
- 47:37adhere to standards.
- 47:38Yeah.
- 47:38They're actually in the rule book,
- 47:40encouraging judges to judge
- 47:42the videos that are public.
- 47:44And if the video gets enough goods,
- 47:49it will move on as a good video.
- 47:52If there are an X number of
- 47:55with penalties or zeros or invalidated,
- 47:59then someone at CrossFit
- 48:01will then check that to
- 48:05make a final determination.
- 48:06Yeah.
- 48:07Sometimes when I see people
- 48:08judging the videos –
- 48:10Like they don't understand like good,
- 48:14good with modifications and invalid.
- 48:16Like so many times people
- 48:18hit invalid and they have
- 48:19no idea that it's not an
- 48:21invalid video if there's no reps.
- 48:23and people will be like, Oh, invalid.
- 48:25Like the only way it's
- 48:26invalid is if the video doesn't open,
- 48:29it's not the right workout.
- 48:31They come out of the screen.
- 48:32There's, there is modifications to the,
- 48:35like to the video,
- 48:36but when there's like no rep or like,
- 48:37it's not even the workout,
- 48:39but like when people have no reps,
- 48:40people will be like invalid, invalid.
- 48:42It's like that part always like, I'm like,
- 48:46did you guys take your judge's course?
- 48:49So back when they opened it
- 48:50before you had to sign in
- 48:53and prove that you were a,
- 48:55you were a qualified judge
- 48:56that you had taken the
- 48:57course and do all that kind of stuff.
- 49:00And then you went into a
- 49:02certain portal and it would
- 49:04just feed you videos.
- 49:05You didn't even get to pick.
- 49:08It would just send you this,
- 49:09like you'd get one from the Ukraine.
- 49:11You'd get one from Iceland.
- 49:14Like I never got any from someone I knew.
- 49:17That's how it should be
- 49:18because or else you just go
- 49:20judge your friend's video and you're like,
- 49:22good.
- 49:24Your competition's video modification.
- 49:28Now,
- 49:28does that mean that's what they're
- 49:29doing this time?
- 49:30I have no idea.
- 49:32But back in like.
- 49:34Fifteen, sixteen.
- 49:36Maybe seventeen when I was doing it,
- 49:39you went into a certain
- 49:40portal and they just fed you the video.
- 49:42You didn't get to pick who
- 49:42you were judging.
- 49:44They just came at you.
- 49:46But now it's just the
- 49:48semifinals that's like that, right?
- 49:49Not the open or the open.
- 49:51Are they public videos for a
- 49:53certain for the top one percent or no?
- 49:57Just the semis.
- 49:59What's that again?
- 50:00The open.
- 50:01Is there also like videos
- 50:03being public in the open or
- 50:04is it just semis?
- 50:06I believe it's both.
- 50:10I would love to see now.
- 50:12I know people will disagree
- 50:13with me where the open scores as,
- 50:17as well as the semifinal
- 50:18scores are all in one
- 50:21leaderboard of the athletes
- 50:23that I've done both in one leader.
- 50:26You,
- 50:26you erase everyone else that affects
- 50:28because now you have,
- 50:29let's say nine scores and
- 50:31Because like the open workouts,
- 50:34like let's say I beat three
- 50:36people or like a bunch of
- 50:37people there on those three workouts.
- 50:40Like those three workouts to
- 50:41me are like still valid enough.
- 50:43Like they're different style of workouts.
- 50:46Versus like, just like being like, oh,
- 50:47you've moved on to the next,
- 50:49but now you won't see
- 50:50burpees and thrusters and chest to bars.
- 50:52You're going to see something else.
- 50:54So let's say I get beat the
- 50:55next part on this other type of workout,
- 50:57but I still beat a bunch of
- 50:58people at this style of workouts.
- 50:59Like, why can't that still be relevant?
- 51:03Then you actually make the open count,
- 51:04especially if the videos are public,
- 51:06make it so it's nine workouts.
- 51:08Now you've got a bigger,
- 51:09now the open matters even more.
- 51:11Then there's a lot more
- 51:13workouts at play for,
- 51:15the qualification to go to the games.
- 51:17You have to be,
- 51:18it's like basically nine scores or like,
- 51:22like I would like that using logic again.
- 51:26I know people will disagree
- 51:27because they're like, oh,
- 51:27those workouts in the open don't matter.
- 51:29But you kick out everyone
- 51:30that has not made it
- 51:32through the one percent and
- 51:34only a leaderboard with
- 51:36open in the semifinals
- 51:38combined because they're different tests.
- 51:40And that's the one thing
- 51:41about CrossFit that I don't get is like,
- 51:42oh,
- 51:43you've you've dwindled out different
- 51:45athletes, but.
- 51:47those tests are still important.
- 51:48It's like, it's like doing a speed test,
- 51:51like a sprint test,
- 51:52let's say as a few months prior.
- 51:55And you're like, Oh,
- 51:56we won't test speed now
- 51:57because we've already tested it,
- 51:58but here are new events.
- 52:00But you were barely, you,
- 52:02you were shitty at, at speed,
- 52:04like at sprinting, but doesn't matter.
- 52:06Now you,
- 52:06you were just good enough that you
- 52:08moved on.
- 52:08Now we'll erase that.
- 52:09Like, I would like that to be added.
- 52:13A train to live.
- 52:13I think that's exactly what she's saying.
- 52:16Add the open scores to the
- 52:17semifinal scores.
- 52:21And the top twelve of all of
- 52:23those scores are going on.
- 52:26Because to me,
- 52:27that's way more complete test.
- 52:31Yeah.
- 52:31I think to do that,
- 52:32you would have to then put
- 52:34the semifinal judge rules
- 52:35on the open so that they
- 52:36are judged identically.
- 52:38But other than that,
- 52:39I think it's a great idea.
- 52:41Yeah,
- 52:42I just never understand why you just
- 52:44go back to zero at the next
- 52:46event and everything you've
- 52:48done prior doesn't matter.
- 52:51It makes no sense.
- 52:52I beat these people at this test.
- 52:53I am significantly better
- 52:55than you at this.
- 52:56I suck at this,
- 52:57but I beat you at all of these.
- 52:59But it doesn't matter
- 53:00because at this stage,
- 53:01I didn't do well at that workout,
- 53:02so I'm out.
- 53:03But I beat you, let's say,
- 53:04at eight of the nine workouts or...
- 53:07six out of the not like it's
- 53:09to me it just makes no
- 53:10sense in terms of that's
- 53:12overall fitness it's not
- 53:14just erasing everything and
- 53:15now you can't program bar
- 53:16muscle ups again because
- 53:17you've done it in the open
- 53:18so you got to do something
- 53:19else but it was still about
- 53:21that test was still valid
- 53:24train to live says he
- 53:25agrees with that point so I
- 53:27want to hit andrew here
- 53:28because he's our active
- 53:29judge uh videos are rarely
- 53:31ever invalidated even when
- 53:33there are times they should be
- 53:35And I know he has done
- 53:36online judging before for CrossFit,
- 53:39so he would know more than most of us.
- 53:42And in addition,
- 53:43the one thing with videos
- 53:45that blows my mind is the
- 53:46number of people who don't
- 53:48use an app like WeTime or
- 53:49Wadproof put your name and
- 53:51a clock on the video
- 53:52instead of relying on a gym clock.
- 53:55And it never goes out of
- 53:56sight because it stays in
- 53:58the corner the whole time.
- 54:00I like seeing the clock.
- 54:03Well, you can do both.
- 54:04Yeah, it's just hard timing it sometimes.
- 54:07Yeah,
- 54:07because I know at Jamie's when we
- 54:08were there for one of her
- 54:11quarters or semis,
- 54:13we started the clock right
- 54:14when her wee time started
- 54:15to make sure that she could
- 54:17always see it as something to go off of.
- 54:25And yeah,
- 54:25some of those apps aren't free too.
- 54:26Yeah,
- 54:28especially since all elements get
- 54:30tested at the games,
- 54:30it would give a more
- 54:31complete look at the athletes.
- 54:35Lynn is with you, Carolyn.
- 54:38I didn't think a lot of
- 54:38people would be agreeing with me there,
- 54:40but I just think it like, to me,
- 54:42it makes no sense that
- 54:43everything that you do past
- 54:45like prior make just gets erased.
- 54:47And it's like, Oh, new slate.
- 54:49Only this counts,
- 54:51especially if it's going to
- 54:52be all an online portion,
- 54:55like the semifinals and the
- 54:57open or online portion.
- 54:58So make that one test the
- 55:00in-person that's another thing.
- 55:04And the clock is readable
- 55:05instead of fifty feet away
- 55:06on a back wall.
- 55:07Yes.
- 55:11So we'll keep going through this.
- 55:16All video will be open for public review.
- 55:20We kind of beat that to death.
- 55:22Affiliates must appoint a
- 55:24head judge to oversee all
- 55:27the workouts at their affiliate.
- 55:30And that is a new
- 55:30requirement for the
- 55:33in-affiliate semifinal is
- 55:36every affiliate must have a
- 55:38head judge that oversees all of them,
- 55:41and they must introduce
- 55:42themselves in every video.
- 55:45Does it have to be the same one?
- 55:48Getting timing-wise,
- 55:49like scheduling of two
- 55:51people now is so annoying.
- 55:53as long as they meet these
- 55:54requirements because these
- 55:55are the requirements for
- 55:56the head judge must hold an
- 55:58active l-one must have
- 55:59completed the twenty-five
- 56:01judges course must have
- 56:02completed the advanced
- 56:03judges course and must be
- 56:05on site to intro each video
- 56:08uh during each workout of
- 56:09the competition I think you
- 56:10could have multiple um but
- 56:13you have to meet all those requirements
- 56:17I don't love that part.
- 56:18I think it's very difficult
- 56:19to find like two people all
- 56:21like every time that you
- 56:23want to do the workout that
- 56:27are available with those
- 56:28qualifications for a quick
- 56:29weekend of doing, let's say,
- 56:31let's call it five workouts,
- 56:32six workouts.
- 56:34Like it's just tough to get
- 56:35those people to come back.
- 56:36Like, yeah, I think for smaller affiliates,
- 56:41this is very difficult.
- 56:43you're, you're bigger,
- 56:44like CrossFit players.
- 56:46We have lots of people that
- 56:47meet those criteria every year.
- 56:51Same with my gym.
- 56:51I would say that most of them will do.
- 56:54We have a bunch of them that
- 56:54will have their level one
- 56:56and level twos because we
- 56:57host level ones and twos
- 56:59and we'll get a lot of
- 57:00people that do the judges course,
- 57:01but still scheduling.
- 57:04And I just think about other
- 57:05people that have,
- 57:05we'll have trouble
- 57:07scheduling to people that
- 57:08have all those qualifications,
- 57:09like the head judge and
- 57:12The judge or the two people,
- 57:13whatever it is.
- 57:15They are responsible for
- 57:16spot checking judges as
- 57:17they judge athletes.
- 57:19Ensure video setups and
- 57:21floor requirements are met.
- 57:23Prior to the competition starting,
- 57:24CrossFit Games staff will
- 57:25hold an online workout briefing.
- 57:28It is recommended all judges
- 57:30view the online workout brief.
- 57:33That's new, too.
- 57:34And I actually think that's a good thing.
- 57:40I mean, yeah,
- 57:40you should judge the one
- 57:42judging each individual athlete.
- 57:44Their requirements are they
- 57:45must have completed.
- 57:48They they must have have a
- 57:50current L one or higher
- 57:52must complete the twenty
- 57:53five judges course must
- 57:55complete the advanced judges course.
- 57:58And then teams may require
- 58:01multiple or two floor
- 58:03judges for an event.
- 58:05Definitely for a synchro work,
- 58:06like it's going to make,
- 58:08they're going to have two people,
- 58:10but I still think that's difficult.
- 58:14Yeah.
- 58:15Some of it's a money grab to
- 58:16get more people to do their, um,
- 58:20their L ones, their L twos, their quality,
- 58:22their judges course, all of that.
- 58:24I mean, I get it.
- 58:25It's a business.
- 58:26Andrew says,
- 58:27I think it's mostly for the
- 58:28training camps that do
- 58:29large in-person events,
- 58:31but it hurts the regular affiliates.
- 58:38Patrick Clark,
- 58:39I love how they expect all
- 58:40these head judges to do
- 58:41something that took Chuck Boz, et cetera,
- 58:44years to perfect.
- 58:45I do not disagree.
- 58:47I'm going to be honest.
- 58:48If I have another judge
- 58:49that's just in the
- 58:50background making sure that
- 58:51the judges is – they're not –
- 58:56they're not Chuck and Boz
- 58:58and people like that.
- 58:59Like they're just going to
- 59:00be there introducing themselves.
- 59:02And then most of the,
- 59:03most of the people that are
- 59:04going to grab these judges
- 59:05are just going to have
- 59:06someone that has their
- 59:07level one or whatever introduced.
- 59:08And then they're going to be
- 59:09off camera and just the one judge.
- 59:12Uh, trained to live.
- 59:13I get why they're pushing
- 59:14the judges to have an L one,
- 59:16but I think if the athlete
- 59:17is comfortable having a
- 59:18judge that has taken both courses,
- 59:19that should be acceptable.
- 59:21I don't know how the L one
- 59:23even plays a mat.
- 59:23Like the L one is talking
- 59:25about technical movements
- 59:27and how to perform the nine
- 59:28foundational movements and
- 59:29nutrition stuff.
- 59:30It has nothing to do with
- 59:33the judges stuff.
- 59:34Like, yeah, I guess points of performance,
- 59:35but, but the, that you wouldn't,
- 59:38that you wouldn't get in
- 59:39the judges course and the
- 59:40advanced judges course.
- 59:41This is the biggest, when I became a judge,
- 59:44this was the hardest thing for me.
- 59:46The L one teaches you how to move well.
- 59:49Yeah.
- 59:49In competition,
- 59:50nobody cares if you move well.
- 59:52Exactly.
- 59:53Did you meet the standards
- 59:54of that movement?
- 59:58And so you almost have to
- 59:59deprogram the L-one to then
- 1:00:02become a judge because it
- 1:00:04doesn't matter how ugly it is.
- 1:00:06If they get their chest to
- 1:00:10the floor on a burpee and
- 1:00:12they come up and their hips are extended,
- 1:00:14it's a clean burpee.
- 1:00:16whether they looked horrible
- 1:00:17in between all that or not.
- 1:00:19That's why I don't get, like,
- 1:00:20I don't understand the L one in terms of,
- 1:00:23yeah, the L one of course is like,
- 1:00:25what is CrossFit and what
- 1:00:27are the down like nine foundational,
- 1:00:29like the L two is more how to coach it.
- 1:00:31And yeah, like the points of performance,
- 1:00:33but it doesn't necessarily matter.
- 1:00:35Just there's more money for, um,
- 1:00:39I do love the courses like
- 1:00:41I've I have my old two and
- 1:00:42I like I I learn so much at
- 1:00:44both of them and if they're
- 1:00:46great courses I just don't
- 1:00:47know how that makes people
- 1:00:48better judges I agree I
- 1:00:51love the courses I have
- 1:00:53taken my l-one twice uh but
- 1:00:59in all honesty I don't
- 1:01:00think the l-one does
- 1:01:00anything to make you a
- 1:01:01better in-person judge
- 1:01:05Especially if they have an
- 1:01:07online judges course that's
- 1:01:08more advanced now and
- 1:01:09hopefully has more of those
- 1:01:11athletes that are actually
- 1:01:12riding the line,
- 1:01:14which is what we do as elite athletes.
- 1:01:16We're just on the right side, hopefully,
- 1:01:18of the line because we're
- 1:01:19racing versus the very
- 1:01:21obvious judges course
- 1:01:23that's just like you know
- 1:01:24exactly what the no rep is.
- 1:01:27That's not what we see with
- 1:01:28the top athletes.
- 1:01:29It's way more gray than that.
- 1:01:32That's more valuable than an L-one.
- 1:01:35Experience doing live
- 1:01:36judging is more valuable in my opinion.
- 1:01:38For sure.
- 1:01:39And the L one and the speed
- 1:01:40at which you athletes move
- 1:01:42is so different than what
- 1:01:43you see it in L one or in the affiliate.
- 1:01:46Which is why the advanced
- 1:01:47judges course is a phenomenal idea.
- 1:01:49Love that.
- 1:01:50Love that they've added
- 1:01:51something like that.
- 1:01:52Cause I don't think that the
- 1:01:53regular judges course is
- 1:01:54enough for those fast moving athletes.
- 1:01:58And just because he said, I'm right.
- 1:02:00You judge to the standards
- 1:02:02set by the competition.
- 1:02:06Trying to live.
- 1:02:07It sucks.
- 1:02:07I've worked in fitness for
- 1:02:08over twelve years and I've
- 1:02:10always taken the judges
- 1:02:11course and now I can't judge this year.
- 1:02:15You can judge in the open.
- 1:02:17You just can't judge semis.
- 1:02:22All right.
- 1:02:26So that is the judging requirements.
- 1:02:30Games qualifying spots.
- 1:02:32Individual will get thirty
- 1:02:34men and thirty women.
- 1:02:37Masters,
- 1:02:38thirty five to thirty nine through
- 1:02:41fifty five to fifty nine
- 1:02:42will get thirty men and thirty women.
- 1:02:45Sixty to sixty nine will get
- 1:02:47twenty and twenty and
- 1:02:48seventy plus will get ten and ten.
- 1:02:52I'm glad they brought that
- 1:02:53down a little bit from last year.
- 1:02:55I'm being at the Masters games.
- 1:02:58That was a little tough.
- 1:03:00Teenage divisions,
- 1:03:01thirty and thirty and teams top twenty.
- 1:03:07And excuse me while I blow
- 1:03:09my nose for a second.
- 1:03:14Yeah,
- 1:03:14I think those are pretty good numbers.
- 1:03:16I still think some of the
- 1:03:19teenage and masters could
- 1:03:20maybe even go to twenty on
- 1:03:22some of the divisions, but.
- 1:03:26Pretty good.
- 1:03:34All right, I'm back.
- 1:03:38Um,
- 1:03:40backfills for drug suspension will only
- 1:03:44go three athletes outside
- 1:03:48the qualification position.
- 1:03:53If an athlete does not decline or invite,
- 1:03:55there's no backfill.
- 1:04:00And then we go to grips and
- 1:04:06I have an Instagram video.
- 1:04:09Somewhere here.
- 1:04:11From victory grips.
- 1:04:21Okay, there's Scott.
- 1:04:30I think the grip the grip
- 1:04:32one is to be determined on
- 1:04:34what they'll do with that.
- 1:04:35But
- 1:04:37I mean,
- 1:04:37having added that terminology is
- 1:04:40interesting.
- 1:04:40There's additional language
- 1:04:42in the rule book this year
- 1:04:44that applies to grips.
- 1:04:46Previously,
- 1:04:47it just said that the grip
- 1:04:48surface cannot be tacky or sticky.
- 1:04:50This year,
- 1:04:51there is an additional language
- 1:04:53that says grips must be
- 1:04:54made of a material that
- 1:04:56provides hand protection,
- 1:04:58but not additional grip advantage.
- 1:05:01Grips are made of either leather,
- 1:05:04synthetic leather,
- 1:05:06or rubber.
- 1:05:08The rubber based grips are
- 1:05:09really popular because they
- 1:05:11do provide additional grip advantage.
- 1:05:14They are really sticky on the bar.
- 1:05:17So could rubber based grips
- 1:05:19be banned in the CrossFit Games?
- 1:05:22There's nothing in the rule
- 1:05:23book that specifies which
- 1:05:25material is banned.
- 1:05:27However,
- 1:05:28I'm going to reach out to CrossFit
- 1:05:29to get some clarification.
- 1:05:31And also,
- 1:05:32does this apply to just the games
- 1:05:35or does it apply to the
- 1:05:37open and the semifinals,
- 1:05:39the in-person qualifiers?
- 1:05:41There's still some questions
- 1:05:42that need to be answered.
- 1:05:43So I'm going to reach out to
- 1:05:44CrossFit and get some
- 1:05:45clarification and report back.
- 1:05:49Very interesting.
- 1:05:52I'm interested on that one,
- 1:05:53on what they'll say, um,
- 1:05:57If that's what they meant by
- 1:05:58the verbiage of the not
- 1:06:02adding additional...
- 1:06:04I guess sticky things.
- 1:06:05Cause those rubber grips
- 1:06:07definitely are very sticky.
- 1:06:11I don't use them.
- 1:06:12I've,
- 1:06:12I've used bear complex almost my
- 1:06:15entire career.
- 1:06:17And when I've, I had a,
- 1:06:20at a local competition,
- 1:06:21someone give me a pair of rubber grips.
- 1:06:24And since then,
- 1:06:25like the frog grips came
- 1:06:26out and it's been very,
- 1:06:27very popular in our space
- 1:06:29to use those grips.
- 1:06:30And when I went onto the bar, I was like,
- 1:06:32Whoa, wow.
- 1:06:34you're like stuck.
- 1:06:35And now all of a sudden
- 1:06:35people are entering the
- 1:06:37competition floor and they
- 1:06:38bring towels and they're
- 1:06:39wiping down the fricking
- 1:06:41bars and get all the chalk off.
- 1:06:45And I'm like,
- 1:06:45what is going on with these grips?
- 1:06:48But it's similar to the
- 1:06:49NorCal competition where you're like, oh,
- 1:06:53let's add this NorCal and oh,
- 1:06:54the qualifiers are tomorrow.
- 1:06:56To me,
- 1:06:56if you're adding a rule that would
- 1:06:58change some of your
- 1:06:59sponsors or like big
- 1:07:01companies in the space,
- 1:07:03and just be like, Oh,
- 1:07:04here's the rule book right now,
- 1:07:05right before the season.
- 1:07:06Oh, the grips that you've been making,
- 1:07:07you won't be,
- 1:07:08none of your athletes can use them now.
- 1:07:11Like,
- 1:07:12I feel like you should be
- 1:07:14communicating those type of
- 1:07:16changes well in advance,
- 1:07:18if it's going to affect
- 1:07:19some of your sponsors and
- 1:07:21stuff like that.
- 1:07:22Um, but curious as to what they'll,
- 1:07:25what they'll say.
- 1:07:26And if that's what they
- 1:07:27meant by the addition, the,
- 1:07:30sticky stuff because the
- 1:07:32rubber grips are completely
- 1:07:34different to me and
- 1:07:35definitely are a game
- 1:07:36changer for sticking onto the bar.
- 1:07:41Uh, CrossFit says,
- 1:07:43I bet the RX Mark here guy
- 1:07:44complained after his grips
- 1:07:45got bounced last year.
- 1:07:46He mentioned the rubber grips then.
- 1:07:49Well, what they did was actually,
- 1:07:53they did skate the line.
- 1:07:56Uh,
- 1:07:56it has been in the rules forever that
- 1:07:58you cannot use a Dow grip.
- 1:08:00that is a traditional gymnastics grip,
- 1:08:03they basically sewed the
- 1:08:05leather over top itself to
- 1:08:08make it like a dowel that
- 1:08:10hooked onto the bar.
- 1:08:14That's very different than a rubber grip.
- 1:08:16Now,
- 1:08:18I would say the dowel probably grips
- 1:08:20even more because you're
- 1:08:21actually like hooking it
- 1:08:23and it would have like a
- 1:08:24little hook underneath to
- 1:08:26hold on where...
- 1:08:29The rubber grip,
- 1:08:30I have a pair of rubber grips.
- 1:08:32They definitely make a difference.
- 1:08:35I can do more reps with them
- 1:08:37than I can with my bare
- 1:08:38complex leather grips, for sure.
- 1:08:44But the Dell,
- 1:08:45I think what he did last year
- 1:08:46was even more over the line,
- 1:08:49if you want to say that.
- 1:08:51I just think if you add
- 1:08:55something like that to the rule book,
- 1:08:57I think that's something
- 1:08:58that you communicate in advance.
- 1:09:01Just like you don't throw on
- 1:09:03NorCal Classic after you've
- 1:09:04announced your competitions
- 1:09:06and you're like, hey,
- 1:09:07the qualifiers right now.
- 1:09:09And then another one of your
- 1:09:10competitions for WOD Fest is like, oh,
- 1:09:14Wadapalooza is right now.
- 1:09:15I guess we'll extend our
- 1:09:16qualifier as well.
- 1:09:17It just seems like there's a
- 1:09:18lot of last-minute changes,
- 1:09:20which I don't like with that.
- 1:09:24But I guess, yeah,
- 1:09:24to be continued on that
- 1:09:26topic and what will go on with that.
- 1:09:29Because there's a lot of
- 1:09:29athletes that are sponsored
- 1:09:30by Frog Grips right now, I think,
- 1:09:32in the space.
- 1:09:32It's like they took over...
- 1:09:35a big part of the market for, for grips.
- 1:09:38Cause back then it was
- 1:09:39mostly victory and bear
- 1:09:41complex were like the main and RX, um,
- 1:09:46smart gear that were like the main three,
- 1:09:48but.
- 1:09:49Yeah.
- 1:09:51Yeah.
- 1:09:51We'll see.
- 1:09:51I, cause there,
- 1:09:53there was a big deal made
- 1:09:54of them last year about the
- 1:09:55length and all of that kind of stuff.
- 1:09:57The length is still in the
- 1:09:59rules that it cannot be at
- 1:10:01full extension above the
- 1:10:04top of the finger.
- 1:10:06But that was kind of ignored
- 1:10:08when you got to the games last year.
- 1:10:11I personally feel like the
- 1:10:12grips that are rubber are a
- 1:10:13little bit like cheating.
- 1:10:14That was my... And I always
- 1:10:16roll my eyes of the
- 1:10:17athletes that bring their
- 1:10:18towels to wipe down all the
- 1:10:19chalk on the bars.
- 1:10:20I'm like, oh my gosh,
- 1:10:21this is getting ridiculous.
- 1:10:23But I think it's going to be
- 1:10:25hard to implement.
- 1:10:27I mean,
- 1:10:28I guess you could just show your
- 1:10:29grips before.
- 1:10:30I guess it wouldn't be that hard, but...
- 1:10:33To me,
- 1:10:33it's just like you either allow
- 1:10:35grips or you don't maybe,
- 1:10:38but Larry says I have death grips,
- 1:10:39little pin in them way less
- 1:10:41than those sticky grips.
- 1:10:42Just saying have both, but my gymnastics,
- 1:10:45it doesn't matter.
- 1:10:46So I choose none.
- 1:10:47I'm with you, Larry.
- 1:10:48Like the little bit of help
- 1:10:51that the sticky grips give
- 1:10:52me is not even going to
- 1:10:53make me come close to
- 1:10:54anybody else on the gymnastics bar.
- 1:10:57Uh, so.
- 1:10:59just helps me do string more
- 1:11:01together in a workout and
- 1:11:03work and get a better
- 1:11:04workout I'm not competing
- 1:11:06in that stuff so I'll do
- 1:11:08what I want there you go um
- 1:11:14real sports provide a
- 1:11:15runway with equipment
- 1:11:16getting banned six twelve
- 1:11:18eighteen months yeah not
- 1:11:21two days before the season
- 1:11:22starts and then is it
- 1:11:27cheating if everybody can use them
- 1:11:29No, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:11:30It's been fair game.
- 1:11:32I just chose not to use them, but I could.
- 1:11:37I do think it's an advantage, though.
- 1:11:39Like, it does make a difference.
- 1:11:40Just, like,
- 1:11:41flopping the grips over make a
- 1:11:43difference versus putting your, like,
- 1:11:45fingers, I guess,
- 1:11:48in the holes and creating
- 1:11:50that little thingy.
- 1:11:50And, like,
- 1:11:51the way you use your grips make
- 1:11:53a difference on where it's
- 1:11:54pulling on your wrist and
- 1:11:56how much you're using your grip strength.
- 1:12:00But, yeah.
- 1:12:03And just, me too, Larry.
- 1:12:06I give up before the equipment as well.
- 1:12:11Allocation of prize money.
- 1:12:13So with all open registrations,
- 1:12:17fifty percent of the money
- 1:12:18earned on those
- 1:12:19registrations will go to
- 1:12:21prize money throughout the season.
- 1:12:24So if the example they use
- 1:12:26is if three hundred
- 1:12:27thousand people sign up for the open,
- 1:12:28that's six million dollars.
- 1:12:30Three million of that would
- 1:12:32go into prize money
- 1:12:34throughout the season.
- 1:12:36The Open would get affiliate
- 1:12:38prizes split between
- 1:12:40participation and performance, uh,
- 1:12:42twenty percent.
- 1:12:44The Open top individual
- 1:12:45performers would get five percent.
- 1:12:48Individual semifinals would
- 1:12:49get three percent.
- 1:12:51Individual games get forty-nine percent.
- 1:12:57Um, affiliate cup games, teams,
- 1:13:00ten percent.
- 1:13:02Masters, ten percent.
- 1:13:04And adaptive, three percent.
- 1:13:09So I know if Jamie were here,
- 1:13:14she'd have a lot to say
- 1:13:16about the ten percent masters.
- 1:13:18And I will tell you her
- 1:13:19argument because we had
- 1:13:20this in a text during yesterday that.
- 1:13:24The thirty five to forty
- 1:13:25nine year old divisions of
- 1:13:27masters make up
- 1:13:29approximately fifty percent
- 1:13:30of open registrations.
- 1:13:34So the people putting in all
- 1:13:35the money are only getting
- 1:13:37ten percent of the cash prize.
- 1:13:41Now, she's not asking for fifty percent.
- 1:13:43She was just like, hey,
- 1:13:45could we get twenty?
- 1:13:50And that is that is her argument,
- 1:13:52and because they only pay
- 1:13:54for second and third in all
- 1:13:55the masters divisions,
- 1:13:57she just thinks it should
- 1:13:58go to fifth or sixth place.
- 1:14:06I do like the twenty percent
- 1:14:07back to the affiliates.
- 1:14:09I think that's a great idea.
- 1:14:10And they get like twenty
- 1:14:11five hundred dollars to
- 1:14:12rogue to buy more equipment.
- 1:14:14Not exactly sure how those
- 1:14:16spots are or how those
- 1:14:19prizes are allocated in
- 1:14:20terms of it says like high
- 1:14:22performers and
- 1:14:23participation by participation.
- 1:14:26Yeah,
- 1:14:26it would be nice that maybe a few of
- 1:14:28them are at random.
- 1:14:29just to allow some of the
- 1:14:31smaller gyms to also
- 1:14:32benefit from possibly
- 1:14:33getting some equipment from
- 1:14:34rogue for free.
- 1:14:35Like if you had, you know, half of those,
- 1:14:38half of those,
- 1:14:39half of those are most
- 1:14:41participation or whatever.
- 1:14:43But then like someone said, uh,
- 1:14:45like Sarah said,
- 1:14:46like it might just end up
- 1:14:47going to those big gyms again,
- 1:14:48that already have a
- 1:14:50ridiculous amount of equipment.
- 1:14:52So grabbing some,
- 1:14:55maybe at random would be nice.
- 1:14:58Um,
- 1:15:02But I do like that.
- 1:15:03I like the idea of it.
- 1:15:04Hopefully it'll play out
- 1:15:06that the prizes don't go to
- 1:15:08Invictus and Mayhem and all
- 1:15:10of those people, but never know.
- 1:15:15For me,
- 1:15:15it was more the breakdown of the
- 1:15:18individual games field that
- 1:15:20I didn't really like as much.
- 1:15:22The top gets a lot more.
- 1:15:24The top athlete that wins gets a lot.
- 1:15:26I would just like to see it
- 1:15:29just be spread a little bit better, um,
- 1:15:32throughout the rest of the, the athletes.
- 1:15:36Cause it is, I mean, yeah, I mean, winners,
- 1:15:40um, get more,
- 1:15:42but I think you could give a
- 1:15:44little bit more down the line.
- 1:15:48So what Carolyn's talking
- 1:15:49about is if it was the the
- 1:15:55three hundred thousand
- 1:15:55registrations for the open first,
- 1:15:58we get three hundred sixty
- 1:15:59five seven thousand five
- 1:16:00hundred second would only
- 1:16:02get seventy three five.
- 1:16:05Then fifty eight, eight, fifty one, four,
- 1:16:08twenty five, seven.
- 1:16:09And when you get to eleven
- 1:16:11places down to twelve
- 1:16:12thousand and then it stops at twenty.
- 1:16:17So only the top twenty get
- 1:16:18paid and that's three
- 1:16:18thousand six hundred seventy five.
- 1:16:20But that is more than they
- 1:16:21paid out last year.
- 1:16:24For the for the for one place.
- 1:16:26Right.
- 1:16:28For one place, the rest of them are,
- 1:16:31I don't think.
- 1:16:33I'd have to go back and look.
- 1:16:36I know it's a steep drop off.
- 1:16:38I'm not sharing the screen.
- 1:16:41I can.
- 1:16:42Because like second place
- 1:16:43was like one hundred and something.
- 1:16:47Like there's a big
- 1:16:48difference between the rest.
- 1:16:53So I will blow this up.
- 1:16:56There you go, Lynn.
- 1:16:58Those are the top places.
- 1:17:04So in twenty and twenty twenty four.
- 1:17:07The first place at the
- 1:17:09CrossFit Games was three
- 1:17:11hundred and fifteen thousand dollars.
- 1:17:13The second place was one
- 1:17:15hundred and twenty five thousand dollars.
- 1:17:17The third place was eighty
- 1:17:19five thousand dollars.
- 1:17:20Fourth was sixty.
- 1:17:22Fifth through eighth was forty five, fifty,
- 1:17:24thirty five, thirty two.
- 1:17:26Like, fortieth place got money.
- 1:17:29Here in this, in the way that they said it,
- 1:17:31I mean, they stopped at twenty-first,
- 1:17:33but the twenty-first place
- 1:17:34in this one last year had seven thousand.
- 1:17:38So, I mean, you can't tell me that, yeah,
- 1:17:44you got one person that's gonna,
- 1:17:46Tia's getting more money, or Laura,
- 1:17:50Jeff is gonna get more money, the winners,
- 1:17:52but the rest of the field
- 1:17:53is making actually way less.
- 1:17:55Yeah.
- 1:17:58So yeah.
- 1:18:01Now who knows what the
- 1:18:03registration is going to be?
- 1:18:05Um, I don't know who said that.
- 1:18:08I think it was trained to live.
- 1:18:10Uh,
- 1:18:13so they are praying people sign up for
- 1:18:15the open.
- 1:18:15Uh,
- 1:18:16I think the athletes are praying that
- 1:18:17people sign up for the open, um,
- 1:18:19because it makes the pot
- 1:18:21bigger that they can earn.
- 1:18:23Um,
- 1:18:26And I will tell you the last two years,
- 1:18:29there have been more than
- 1:18:30three hundred thousand
- 1:18:32people registered for the open.
- 1:18:35I think last year was like
- 1:18:36three seventy and the year
- 1:18:38before that was three forty.
- 1:18:42But, you know,
- 1:18:44there's been all this
- 1:18:45speculation that not as
- 1:18:46many people would be
- 1:18:47signing up this year.
- 1:18:48So who knows what that's
- 1:18:49going to mean to overall
- 1:18:51registrations and whether
- 1:18:54whether or not it's going to
- 1:18:56impact the price purse.
- 1:18:58I do like that they gave that information,
- 1:19:00though,
- 1:19:00on where the percentages of the
- 1:19:02twenty dollars is going.
- 1:19:03I think that is better
- 1:19:06communication than they've
- 1:19:07done in the past.
- 1:19:08So I think that was a
- 1:19:09positive that they put
- 1:19:10because normally we don't
- 1:19:11really know where the money
- 1:19:12is coming from.
- 1:19:14They didn't have to give us
- 1:19:15that information.
- 1:19:15They did.
- 1:19:16But I think that was
- 1:19:17interesting to see where
- 1:19:19they are going to be putting it.
- 1:19:23Patrick says this is what
- 1:19:24happens when you lose
- 1:19:25sponsors and decide not to
- 1:19:26give title rights to sponsors.
- 1:19:38Haven't seen many vids from
- 1:19:39athletes begging fans to sign up yet.
- 1:19:45I,
- 1:19:45I have seen a lot of video or
- 1:19:47advertisements on social
- 1:19:49media from CrossFit about L ones,
- 1:19:54the open things like that.
- 1:19:56So they are,
- 1:19:57they're doing a push from CrossFit,
- 1:20:00but I have not seen
- 1:20:01anything from athletes.
- 1:20:08Sarah says,
- 1:20:09Lambray better be eating her words.
- 1:20:10What have the affiliates
- 1:20:11done for athletes?
- 1:20:13Be your payday.
- 1:20:16Again,
- 1:20:16I think that was taken a little out
- 1:20:17of context.
- 1:20:18I was just about to say that.
- 1:20:22I was just about to say that.
- 1:20:23That clip that went viral,
- 1:20:25if you listen to the whole interview,
- 1:20:27she goes on.
- 1:20:28I mean, she's an affiliate owner.
- 1:20:29She's not trying to bash the affiliates.
- 1:20:34They were just trying to
- 1:20:34make a point in one piece, but
- 1:20:38She could have chose her
- 1:20:39words better in that sentence,
- 1:20:40but I think it was taken
- 1:20:42out of context for sure.
- 1:20:44I think so too.
- 1:20:51T-Bird says,
- 1:20:51I think they're trying to make
- 1:20:53it so to win is very profitable.
- 1:20:55So people are going to want to try and win,
- 1:20:58which means people will still register.
- 1:21:02We'll see.
- 1:21:07Uh,
- 1:21:11Okay, and we'll move on from that.
- 1:21:14I think that pretty much
- 1:21:15sums up the Dave Castro
- 1:21:18video on the Community Cup.
- 1:21:22We're running late,
- 1:21:22so I'm just going to tell
- 1:21:24you the way that the
- 1:21:25seeding happens and the way
- 1:21:27you get your level is it's
- 1:21:28based on percentile.
- 1:21:30So wherever you finish
- 1:21:31percentile-wise in the open,
- 1:21:35if you're in the fiftieth percentile,
- 1:21:37that's a level five.
- 1:21:38fiftieth to fifty nine.
- 1:21:41If you're sixty to sixty nine,
- 1:21:42that's level six and so on and so forth.
- 1:21:46The divisions are are like
- 1:21:48two groups of those.
- 1:21:52Level, so ten and nine or one group,
- 1:21:56seven advanced.
- 1:21:57Right.
- 1:21:58Intermediate, rookie.
- 1:22:01So they all have like a
- 1:22:02different division.
- 1:22:03And then that's how you will
- 1:22:04compete in the community cup.
- 1:22:07If you go to the Dave Castro Instagram,
- 1:22:09he explains it out with a
- 1:22:11whiteboard and a marker.
- 1:22:13And it's pretty simple the way he does it.
- 1:22:16It's essentially the
- 1:22:16quarterfinals from last year,
- 1:22:18but everyone can play at their own level.
- 1:22:20Yeah.
- 1:22:23Yeah.
- 1:22:27So then we also have the WFP
- 1:22:29making announcements this week.
- 1:22:31And I hate shortchanging this,
- 1:22:33but we'll just have to get
- 1:22:34into more detail next week.
- 1:22:36They announced where their
- 1:22:37tour events are going to be
- 1:22:38and when they're going to be.
- 1:22:40So the first tour event for
- 1:22:42WFP is in Indianapolis, Indiana,
- 1:22:45and it will be May ninth
- 1:22:46through the eleventh,
- 1:22:48which is also the same days
- 1:22:49as the French throwdown.
- 1:22:53So all of the European
- 1:22:54athletes who are in the WFP
- 1:22:57and will have to travel to Indianapolis,
- 1:22:59Indiana based on their
- 1:23:00contract will not be able
- 1:23:02to do the French throwdown
- 1:23:04if they were choosing to do that anyway.
- 1:23:09Tour event two will be in Phoenix or Mesa,
- 1:23:12Arizona.
- 1:23:13They said Phoenix slash Mesa.
- 1:23:16It's all kind of one hub in there.
- 1:23:19August twenty ninth to the thirty first.
- 1:23:21And the finals will be
- 1:23:22December eighteenth to the
- 1:23:24twenty first in Copenhagen, Denmark.
- 1:23:30Yeah, and that tour event, one,
- 1:23:32not only is it during French Throwdown,
- 1:23:34but it's literally the
- 1:23:36weekend after the online semifinals.
- 1:23:39So if you're a European athlete,
- 1:23:41you're probably going to be doing it.
- 1:23:43You know,
- 1:23:43you've already traveled to
- 1:23:44somewhere in North America, in Indiana,
- 1:23:47and you'll probably be
- 1:23:48doing the online semifinals
- 1:23:50there because you don't
- 1:23:50want to be traveling,
- 1:23:52doing the online semifinals
- 1:23:53at your home affiliate and
- 1:23:55then traveling to North
- 1:23:57America for this first one.
- 1:23:59And if you're a North America athlete,
- 1:24:01you know,
- 1:24:02you're going to go back to back
- 1:24:03weekends and you're going
- 1:24:04to go try to do your online semifinals,
- 1:24:07probably repeat some
- 1:24:08workouts to try to qualify
- 1:24:09through that online
- 1:24:10semifinals and right away
- 1:24:11go into your first competition,
- 1:24:14which is not ideal because you're,
- 1:24:17let's say the last workout
- 1:24:18is May fourth or May fifth
- 1:24:20for the online semifinals.
- 1:24:21You're going back to back
- 1:24:22right there into the next part.
- 1:24:26And then let's say you
- 1:24:27didn't get in that top
- 1:24:28twelve spot and you're
- 1:24:30hoping to do both seasons.
- 1:24:32It's going to be very
- 1:24:33difficult because now all
- 1:24:35of a sudden you got to
- 1:24:36start looking at
- 1:24:36competitions right after
- 1:24:37your first event in Indiana.
- 1:24:40And you only have three more weekends.
- 1:24:46So it's pretty tight.
- 1:24:48Yeah.
- 1:24:48Which is why like it's
- 1:24:49people are going to have to
- 1:24:50kind of choose.
- 1:24:51And that's why I asked you the question,
- 1:24:54do we need to start training differently?
- 1:24:57If you want to play in this
- 1:24:59pro sport now where you
- 1:25:00have more opportunities,
- 1:25:03it's going to be crammed.
- 1:25:09What I'm excited about is
- 1:25:13Mayhem and Syndicate Crown
- 1:25:17are drivable for me.
- 1:25:19Uh, Indianapolis,
- 1:25:20Indiana is a two hour drive for me.
- 1:25:22The masters CrossFit games
- 1:25:23and teen CrossFit games are in Columbus,
- 1:25:25Ohio, right here in my hometown.
- 1:25:28And Phoenix Mesa is a,
- 1:25:30there's direct flights from
- 1:25:31Columbus all the time and
- 1:25:32they're super cheap.
- 1:25:33Uh,
- 1:25:34so those are at least a handful of
- 1:25:36events that I can get to fairly cheaply.
- 1:25:40Um, so I'm excited about that.
- 1:25:43I know PC's in here talking
- 1:25:46about the European athletes
- 1:25:47and all they have to pay.
- 1:25:48Um,
- 1:25:49which is way more than what
- 1:25:50I'm going to have to pay this year.
- 1:25:52But I'm excited that I get
- 1:25:53to go to a lot of in-person
- 1:25:55events pretty easily.
- 1:26:00In addition to that,
- 1:26:00there was an announcement a
- 1:26:02day or two ago, maybe,
- 1:26:03Reps Ahead Pro Six is on the board.
- 1:26:07What a lineup.
- 1:26:08Great lineup.
- 1:26:10This will be at Wadapalooza.
- 1:26:12And the headliner for the
- 1:26:14men is Jason Hopper versus Dallin pepper.
- 1:26:17And the workout does contain an echo bike.
- 1:26:21So you'll see once and for all,
- 1:26:23who is the king of the echo bike.
- 1:26:27And then Emma Lawson and
- 1:26:28Alex Kazan are going for
- 1:26:29the women as the headliner there.
- 1:26:32And I'm sure Patrick knows more than I do,
- 1:26:34but they said there is an
- 1:26:36undercard that is still to be announced.
- 1:26:41Yeah, great lineup.
- 1:26:42And it is on the final night
- 1:26:44of the individual events
- 1:26:46after the last individual event goes,
- 1:26:49then the Reps Ahead crew
- 1:26:50will hit the floor and do their event.
- 1:26:57So, and he said, yep,
- 1:27:00just waiting on one signature.
- 1:27:02My signature, Patrick?
- 1:27:03Just kidding.
- 1:27:06There was a question for you,
- 1:27:08and I don't want to skip over that.
- 1:27:11Oh, trying to live.
- 1:27:13Uh, is Carolyn going to play in the WFP?
- 1:27:17I'll try to do some online stuff.
- 1:27:19Yeah.
- 1:27:19I have to qualify for it.
- 1:27:20I think it's very hard to do the top ten,
- 1:27:24but I do like that those
- 1:27:28time of the year better for me.
- 1:27:31Like the August one, I'm off for school.
- 1:27:33So that already is better.
- 1:27:37Um,
- 1:27:40But yeah, we'll, uh, I'll try.
- 1:27:43I don't know what,
- 1:27:44I didn't see when the dates
- 1:27:45are for the qualifier though,
- 1:27:46but there are six weeks
- 1:27:48before each event.
- 1:27:50Gotcha.
- 1:27:51I mean, I like competing.
- 1:27:53Um,
- 1:27:54I don't like wasting my money to travel.
- 1:27:56So I try to find things
- 1:27:58normally that I can.
- 1:28:00be smart with my money but
- 1:28:03I'm just yeah like I I've
- 1:28:05always just competed and
- 1:28:06done stuff so I'll try to
- 1:28:08do it uh you are not
- 1:28:09undercard material carolyn
- 1:28:11don't worry we will talk um
- 1:28:16another question for you uh
- 1:28:17carolyn are you doing all
- 1:28:18the rogue challenges this year every year
- 1:28:22You'll see me in a bunch of online stuff.
- 1:28:25I like doing stuff.
- 1:28:27It just keeps me motivated.
- 1:28:30If I don't have competitions
- 1:28:31or if I don't have
- 1:28:33different things to train for,
- 1:28:34I mentally struggle to just
- 1:28:35kind of stay in it.
- 1:28:36So that's why I just kind of
- 1:28:37compete all year round, stay fit.
- 1:28:40I enjoy it.
- 1:28:43T-Bird, missed the beginning.
- 1:28:44Did you guys talk about AFJ
- 1:28:46seminar right before WADA?
- 1:28:47We actually talked about that, I think,
- 1:28:48two weeks ago.
- 1:28:50Yeah, pretty in-depth.
- 1:28:52So it was on our episode
- 1:28:53about two weeks ago.
- 1:28:54But yeah,
- 1:28:54they are holding a judges seminar
- 1:28:56right before Wadapalooza goes live.
- 1:29:00It is the first time that
- 1:29:01has ever happened.
- 1:29:02And it's a way to train.
- 1:29:03And then they will be also
- 1:29:06grading judges starting at Wadapalooza.
- 1:29:09I think that's a great idea though.
- 1:29:10I saw that Brent with the PFA had posted,
- 1:29:13like they're looking for
- 1:29:13athletes that are high
- 1:29:14level to kind of help with
- 1:29:17these seminars to be moving fast.
- 1:29:19And yeah, I think giving,
- 1:29:23giving more judges
- 1:29:24experiences is going to be
- 1:29:25good in having some
- 1:29:27in-person seminars where, you know,
- 1:29:29you're getting graded on judging is,
- 1:29:31is awesome.
- 1:29:31Great idea.
- 1:29:34We need a full on Q and a
- 1:29:35show with Carolyn.
- 1:29:37We can make that happen.
- 1:29:39I can facilitate.
- 1:29:45Tiber says, I'll go back and watch.
- 1:29:46Yeah, I think it's two weeks ago, right?
- 1:29:48I'm not sure.
- 1:29:49I think maybe last week.
- 1:29:50I'm not sure.
- 1:29:51Yeah.
- 1:29:52I can't remember.
- 1:29:56But I know we did talk about
- 1:29:57it for sure because that's
- 1:30:00how it came up.
- 1:30:03um yeah I think that's all
- 1:30:03that's on our docket for
- 1:30:07tonight and we hit right at
- 1:30:09nine thirty as always next
- 1:30:13week we're gonna talk about
- 1:30:13wadapalooza more in depth
- 1:30:15uh as it will be kicking
- 1:30:17off two weeks from last
- 1:30:20friday or thursday last thursday uh
- 1:30:24maybe we'll hit those um
- 1:30:27maybe we'll hit the that
- 1:30:28afj thing a little bit next
- 1:30:30weekend and talk about that
- 1:30:31maybe we'll put a little
- 1:30:32segment in the next week
- 1:30:33show ask carolyn or ask
- 1:30:35jamie the two athletes um
- 1:30:38and let you two just have
- 1:30:40like fifteen minutes for
- 1:30:41that and if you have any
- 1:30:44questions between now and
- 1:30:45then throw those in the
- 1:30:46chat or the comments uh to
- 1:30:49the show don't forget to
- 1:30:52like and subscribe yeah
