- Netflix hits a speed bump in the streaming ad-tier race. Plus, Instagram pushes ninety-minute uploads as the battle for living room watch time heats up. --- Welcome to your daily industry breakdown—Kai Rivers here with your Studio Signal briefing, backed by Harkins Capital. We are starting with the evolving economics of streaming television. Variety is reporting that Netflix is grappling with a digital ad squeeze right now. As the platform has expanded its ad-supported tier, it is suddenly running into a widening glut of streaming commercial inventory across the entire market. For years, Netflix blazed the trail for subscription video, and the rest of the industry followed. But now that every major studio has pivoted to ad-supported streaming to chase profitability, Madison Avenue has nearly infinite options. When ad buyers have that much leverage, it creates downward pressure on pricing. Netflix is discovering that building an advertising tech stack is one thing, but maintaining premium ad rates in a flooded market is a completely different challenge. For years, Wall Street judged these companies purely on subscriber additions. Now, the battleground has shifted entirely to average revenue per user. If ad rates drop because there is simply too much inventory across Hulu, Max, Prime Video, and Netflix, finding that path to sustained streaming profitability gets much steeper. Meanwhile, the definition of streaming television continues to blur, and Meta is making a very aggressive play for the living room. Tubefilter notes that Instagram is now experimenting with ninety-minute video uploads, directly chasing YouTube's dominance in connected TV watch time. We have known for a while that audiences are increasingly casting mobile video to their smart televisions. Now, Instagram wants creators producing feature-length content natively on its platform, keeping those eyeballs locked into the Meta ecosystem rather than switching over to traditional streaming apps. And speaking of the creator economy scaling up, it is not just staying in the living room. Variety reports that Amelia Dimoldenberg’s highly successful YouTube series Chicken Shop Date is officially heading to theaters. To celebrate its final series, they are holding a one-night-only event in cinemas across the U.K., Ireland, and Australia this November. This is a perfect example of event cinema expanding beyond traditional studio films. Exhibitors are desperate for varied programming to fill seats on off-peak nights, and tapping into a digital creator’s highly engaged, built-in audience is a low-risk, high-reward strategy. It bridges the gap between digital native content and traditional theatrical distribution. Over in the corporate strategy department, David Ellison’s Skydance is dealing with a new kind of spotlight. Puck News is diving into the ripple effects of Elon Musk’s one-billion-dollar investment in the company. Now that Ellison has successfully completed his acquisition of Paramount Global, Skydance is the controlling power of a legacy media empire. But taking a billion-dollar check from a highly polarizing figure comes with strings attached. Puck highlights potential friction around employee morale and talent relations. In the Hollywood creative community, optical alignment matters just as much as capital. As Skydance attempts to stabilize the Paramount lot and potentially pursue further acquisitions like Warner Bros Discovery, studio leadership will have to carefully manage their relationships with top-tier showrunners and actors who might be uneasy about where the funding is coming from. Let us check the theatrical tape to see what audiences are actually paying for. Laika’s latest stop-motion feature, Wildwood, is currently in its opening weekend, taking the number three spot on the chart. According to The Numbers, the film pulled in twelve point three million dollars over its first three days, giving it a matching twelve point three million dollar cumulative domestic total. While it is always great to see independent animation on the big screen, the financial reality here is tight. The production budget sits at one hundred million dollars, and right now, the global return is only sitting at a zero point two multiple of that cost. Stop-motion is a notoriously expensive and labor-intensive medium. To justify that price tag, Laika is going to need Wildwood to show exceptional staying power through the upcoming holiday corridor and rely heavily on international expansion. Time for the Tech and AI Corner. If you work in post-production, speed is the only currency that matters, and Blackmagic Design just dropped a major workflow upgrade. No Film School reports that the latest DaVinci Resolve update significantly boosts its IntelliSearch feature and playback caching. IntelliSearch uses artificial intelligence to instantly scan and tag raw footage, which fundamentally changes the timeline for assistant editors. Instead of spending days manually logging clips, the software handles the heavy lifting, streamlining the pipeline from raw camera capture to the final render. For studio post-production supervisors managing tightening budgets, tools that cut down raw logging hours are an immediate margin saver. Let us close out with the market wrap. The broader market finished in the green today, with the S and P five hundred up about half a percent. The media and entertainment sector actually outperformed the broader tape, finishing up nearly one percent on average. The absolute standout today was Paramount—shares surged almost thirty-five percent. That substantial jump is directly tied to the Puck News report we discussed earlier regarding Musk’s one-billion-dollar cash injection into parent company Skydance. While talent relations might be a concern on the studio lot, investors on Wall Street are clearly cheering the added liquidity and the aggressive moves by David Ellison's team. Outside of Paramount, no other individual media stock crossed our five-percent threshold today, so the rest of the sector was relatively quiet under the hood.
