- 0:14Speaker 2: This is the best of Stugatz and Company live on
- 0:17Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio.
- 0:20Speaker 1: I have kicked Taylor and Mikey A out of the
- 0:22Speaker 1: studios here for an hour.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Because I want alone time with Israel Gutierrez.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Are we still doing radio in this hour?
- 0:30Speaker 3: Yeah, we're doing radio.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I kicked them out. They'll be back for hour number two.
- 0:35Speaker 1: They have some work to do.
- 0:36Speaker 3: They have some editing to do. And I wanted alone
- 0:39Speaker 3: time with Israel Gutierrez. 877-99 on Fox. Just me and
- 0:43Speaker 3: Izzy here.
- 0:44Speaker 1: We'll speak to Dan Beyer here in a second about
- 0:46Speaker 1: his Seahawks. But just me and Izzy here for the
- 0:49Speaker 1: next hour. We will take your phone calls, 877-99 on Fox.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Bear is going to join us to talk about the
- 0:56Speaker 1: expanded college football playoff. And Matt Viscursion, lifelong Brewers fan,
- 1:01Speaker 1: is going to join us as well. Both of those
- 1:04Speaker 1: guys will join us in hour number two. Izzy hands
- 1:07Speaker 1: me a piece of paper when he comes in that
- 1:10Speaker 1: has his topics on it, things he's interested in talking about.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And I couldn't really get past the first one because
- 1:18Speaker 1: it simply says Bo Nix sucks.
- 1:21Speaker 3: That was what got you. Yeah.
- 1:23Speaker 1: And I'm afraid to go down the list because I
- 1:25Speaker 1: took a glance and there's someone else who sucks, but
- 1:28Speaker 1: I like that guy.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Well, maybe we'll stay away from that one.
- 1:33Speaker 3: If necessary. Maybe we'll get there.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:35Speaker 1: What a weird game last night. A bad game. The
- 1:38Speaker 1: Broncos win. They win it in overtime. They go to
- 1:40Speaker 1: four and two. They have beaten Jacksonville. They have beaten Seattle.
- 1:44Speaker 1: They have beaten the Rams with a really bad quarterback.
- 1:49Speaker 5: It was such an interesting game.
- 1:50Speaker 4: I thought, you know, it's one of those low-scoring games that,
- 1:53Speaker 4: to me, for some reason, was interesting. And maybe it
- 1:56Speaker 4: was just because I'm sort of analyzing what's going on
- 1:59Speaker 4: between the two quarterbacks because even though he's won the
- 2:01Speaker 4: Super Bowl, I'm not convinced Sam Darnold doesn't suck also.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:05Speaker 1: It's one of our poll questions today when we did
- 2:08Speaker 1: the pods earlier. Is Sam Darnold good?
- 2:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean....
- 2:13Speaker 4: I don't know who was more off the hook yesterday,
- 2:16Speaker 4: Bo Nix or Sam Darnold. Actually, I thought it was
- 2:18Speaker 4: going to be Bo Nix. I was just trying to
- 2:20Speaker 4: think of bailout jokes for Bo Nix because he won
- 2:26Speaker 4: the game and Sam Darnold was terrible, even more terrible.
- 2:30Speaker 4: But no, after Fitzy, Fitzmagic, went off on him in
- 2:34Speaker 4: the postgame, Bo Nix became the story. And Yeah, I mean,
- 2:39Speaker 4: he's talked about not competing. I don't know about not competing.
- 2:44Speaker 4: He just doesn't seem like he has any confidence to
- 2:47Speaker 4: do anything down the field. And I wonder how much
- 2:50Speaker 4: of that has to do with when Sean Payton installs
- 2:54Speaker 4: a game plan, especially since he's the play caller now
- 2:56Speaker 4: for the past few weeks. If you're installing a game
- 3:00Speaker 4: plan that tells your quarterback, hey, you're probably better off
- 3:04Speaker 4: just throwing this right at the line of scrimmage or
- 3:05Speaker 4: behind the line of scrimmage or when it's got nothing
- 3:08Speaker 4: but screen passes on it, even though the defense knows
- 3:10Speaker 4: you're going to be a heavy screen pass team when
- 3:12Speaker 4: you're playing against Sean Payton, when you are doing that,
- 3:15Speaker 4: when you're seeing that in practice all week, does that
- 3:18Speaker 4: sort of make you lose confidence as a quarterback when
- 3:21Speaker 4: you're out there?
- 3:22Speaker 1: So it's interesting because Sean Payton is one of the
- 3:25Speaker 1: coaches where you would say quarterbacks want to play for
- 3:28Speaker 1: that coach. He is going to teach you how to
- 3:30Speaker 1: be an NFL quarterback and a good NFL quarterback, but
- 3:35Speaker 1: This is a different Bo Nix this year.
- 3:37Speaker 3: He is not confident. There is trepidation. It seems like.
- 3:42Speaker 3: for him to throw the ball.
- 3:44Speaker 1: He just doesn't want to do it because he lacks
- 3:46Speaker 1: confidence in himself to do it. And I don't know
- 3:48Speaker 1: if that's a product of Sean Payton being very, very
- 3:50Speaker 1: hard on him. I have no idea. They're 4-2 without
- 3:53Speaker 1: Bo Nix playing well, and maybe Sean Payton is seeing
- 3:56Speaker 1: something that we're perhaps not seeing because he sees them
- 3:59Speaker 1: every day in practice. Hey, this guy is limited, and
- 4:02Speaker 1: this is the way I have to win games with
- 4:04Speaker 1: this guy as my quarterback.
- 4:06Speaker 4: I would say the actual language that's being used there is, hey,
- 4:10Speaker 4: our defense is great. Right.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Let's not lose the game.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:14Speaker 4: For our because our defense is going to help us
- 4:16Speaker 4: win this game. They're going to be dominant all season long.
- 4:19Speaker 4: They were without Patrick Sertan yesterday.
- 4:21Speaker 5: They still looked amazing.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:23Speaker 4: And so that's probably the language. And Bo Nix is
- 4:26Speaker 4: just like, well, I'm only doing what you asked me
- 4:28Speaker 4: to do. I didn't throw any interceptions. I just didn't
- 4:31Speaker 4: complete a whole lot of long passes.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:34Speaker 1: It's been really ugly. And the defense has been great.
- 4:37Speaker 1: When you look at the wins I laid out, Jacksonville
- 4:39Speaker 1: is a team that everyone loves and thinks they can
- 4:41Speaker 1: go to the Super Bowl. The Rams before the season
- 4:44Speaker 1: was everyone's favorite to make it to the Super Bowl,
- 4:46Speaker 1: win the Super Bowl, and they beat the Super Bowl
- 4:48Speaker 1: champions as well. Jacksonville, the Rams, and Seattle. But the
- 4:53Speaker 1: defense was the reason they won all three of those games.
- 4:57Speaker 1: The defense has been amazing. It reminds me of that
- 5:00Speaker 1: Giants team, I think in 91. That had a great defense.
- 5:04Speaker 1: They lost Phil Sims. Jeff Hostetler came in.
- 5:06Speaker 3: He was limited.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And they won by running the football and playing defense.
- 5:10Speaker 1: And Hostetler didn't have to do that much.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm pretty sure I was in seventh grade. I
- 5:14Speaker 5: don't know how well I remember the details of that team.
- 5:16Speaker 3: I don't know how I remember.
- 5:19Speaker 5: But it is funny, though, because I saw.
- 5:21Speaker 4: And I never really listened to what they're saying, but
- 5:23Speaker 4: I saw on first take in the background somewhere where
- 5:26Speaker 4: I was today where the question was, is it fair
- 5:30Speaker 4: to criticize Bo Nix after a win?
- 5:32Speaker 5: Well, first of all, it's a terrible question.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Of course it's fair.
- 5:34Speaker 4: You can criticize anybody after a win. First of all,
- 5:36Speaker 4: if you've got somebody to criticize, just do it. That's
- 5:38Speaker 4: what all these shows are about.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:39Speaker 3: They're winning despite Bo Nix.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:42Speaker 4: But I think the question should have been, was that
- 5:46Speaker 4: criticism of Bo Nix, did it sort of overshadow what
- 5:50Speaker 4: should have happened, which was, Criticism of the Super Bowl
- 5:53Speaker 4: champion quarterback on the other side, Sam Darnold. Because, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 4: not only did he, yes, he was feeling some pressure, obviously,
- 6:00Speaker 4: from that Broncos defense. But when there was pressure in
- 6:05Speaker 4: his face, when there was pressure anywhere around him, he
- 6:07Speaker 4: was just not going to do anything with it.
- 6:10Speaker 5: And then those two interceptions were just god-awful.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Like, absolutely terrible.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 4: The second one where he had Cooper Cup on a
- 6:18Speaker 4: speed out on the right side for an easy first down,
- 6:21Speaker 4: I think it was third and one. He just needed
- 6:22Speaker 4: the one yard. Cooper Cup was wide open with a
- 6:26Speaker 4: defender maybe three or four yards behind him. He didn't
- 6:28Speaker 4: even look in that direction. Like, you got to know time, score, situation. Like,
- 6:32Speaker 4: it's third and one. You're trying to drive down, win
- 6:34Speaker 4: this game.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Give it to Cooper Cup. Yes. The best thing on
- 6:38Speaker 3: that field last night was the uniforms.
- 6:40Speaker 5: I mean, maybe that's why I love it so much.
- 6:42Speaker 3: They popped off the screen. Sam Darnold. We'll get to
- 6:46Speaker 3: Dan in a second. Dan is a big Seahawks fan.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Sam Darnold.
- 6:49Speaker 1: The obvious difference is both those teams went to their
- 6:53Speaker 1: championship games last year. Broncos to the AFC championship game.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Seattle to the NFC championship game. I spent most of
- 6:59Speaker 1: last evening asking myself how. But the difference with Darnold
- 7:05Speaker 1: and Bo Nix, obviously Darnold won the Super Bowl. But
- 7:09Speaker 1: the other big difference is we forget just how good
- 7:13Speaker 1: Sam Darnold was against the Rams in the NFC Championship game.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And so I'd like to think Sam Darnold hasn't forgotten
- 7:20Speaker 1: how to be great.
- 7:21Speaker 3: He was great 10 months ago when they won a
- 7:24Speaker 3: Super Bowl, you know?
- 7:25Speaker 5: Well, and maybe this is it.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Maybe he was just, and again, I don't remember a
- 7:29Speaker 4: lot of the details of his path to the Super Bowl.
- 7:32Speaker 5: You remember 1991. I can't remember last year.
- 7:35Speaker 3: But I remember that NFC Championship game and just how
- 7:37Speaker 3: good he was. He was flawless. He was nearly perfect,
- 7:39Speaker 3: Sam Darnold. He was probably a little.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Bit more comfortable than he was yesterday because yesterday, late
- 7:43Speaker 4: in that game, you could sort of see, even when
- 7:46Speaker 4: he did have a decent pocket, he was just sort
- 7:48Speaker 4: of rushing some decisions, including that last interception, which, all right,
- 7:52Speaker 4: I'm just going to say it.
- 7:54Speaker 5: I didn't love what Herb Street had to say in that.
- 7:57Speaker 4: He tried to blame the receiver for that interception, which is, whatever,
- 8:03Speaker 4: if he's running a lazy route, don't throw him the
- 8:06Speaker 4: ball and definitely don't underthrow him, like at least overthrow him,
- 8:11Speaker 4: try to make him catch up to that. But that
- 8:14Speaker 4: was a terribly thrown ball, and Herbie's trying to blame
- 8:16Speaker 4: the wideout.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Well, he's a former quarterback defending other quarterbacks, and quarterbacks
- 8:20Speaker 1: will tell you all the time, hey, it's not always
- 8:22Speaker 1: my fault.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Guys are running the wrong routes. That wasn't one of them.
- 8:25Speaker 5: That was not one of them.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Because, hey, I told you, he had another wide-open guy
- 8:30Speaker 4: to continue the drive on the right side. Second of all, yeah,
- 8:34Speaker 4: he still under-threw that. Even though the guy wasn't wide open,
- 8:37Speaker 4: it's not like he threw into double coverage. It's not
- 8:40Speaker 4: like the receiver cut the wrong direction. The route seemed
- 8:44Speaker 4: to be the proper route, whether he was running it lazily,
- 8:47Speaker 4: which I didn't even see that.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:49Speaker 5: And he just kept harping on it. I was like, no, man,
- 8:51Speaker 5: it's okay. You can criticize Sam Darnold.
- 8:53Speaker 3: It's okay.
- 8:54Speaker 5: He's having a bad game.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 1: So the reason I didn't want to scroll down Izzy's
- 8:57Speaker 1: list here is because right after it says Bo Nix sucks,
- 9:00Speaker 1: the next one is Herbie sucks too. And he knows
- 9:03Speaker 1: I like Kirk Herbstreit. He was just on the show
- 9:05Speaker 1: with us. this past week. I'm friends with him. I
- 9:08Speaker 1: love that guy. And now I'm going to find myself
- 9:11Speaker 1: in some sort of deal where I'm going to spend
- 9:14Speaker 1: my weekend apologizing.
- 9:15Speaker 3: To Kirk Herbstreit. Let me back off of that a
- 9:17Speaker 3: little bit.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Say what you want to say. He had a bad game.
- 9:21Speaker 3: He had a bad game. Probably.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Probably doing too much.
- 9:24Speaker 4: There was one moment where I thought Al Michaels was
- 9:27Speaker 4: just going to yell Steve Martin if he was a
- 9:29Speaker 4: fan of your previous show because after, I think there
- 9:33Speaker 4: was a point where The Broncos threw the ball on
- 9:37Speaker 4: third down, you know, in that last drive in regulation
- 9:39Speaker 4: when giving the Seahawks the ball back.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:41Speaker 5: And it saved them a timeout. Right.
- 9:43Speaker 4: And Al Michaels said that. He said, oh, it did
- 9:45Speaker 4: them a favor there by getting that incomplete pass.
- 9:47Speaker 6: Yes.
- 9:48Speaker 4: And then a minute later, Herbstreit said, oh, by the way,
- 9:50Speaker 4: it got to save them a timeout because of the
- 9:52Speaker 4: incomplete pass. Right.
- 9:53Speaker 3: But here's the real question. Do you think Al Michaels noticed?
- 9:56Speaker 3: I mean, honestly. Probably. Not as sharp as he used
- 9:59Speaker 3: to be. to be. He probably does.
- 10:01Speaker 4: He probably rolled his eyes a little and said, this guy.
- 10:03Speaker 1: So how do you think that went down? He said
- 10:05Speaker 1: something to Herbie during the break there?
- 10:07Speaker 5: No, I think he left it right.
- 10:09Speaker 4: I don't think he cares enough to just create an
- 10:12Speaker 4: issue about it. I just think he's rolling his eyes
- 10:14Speaker 4: and then moving on.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Let's go to Dan Byard, Sherman Oaks. He's a Seahawks fan.
- 10:18Speaker 1: He loves Seattle. He loves Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold won
- 10:21Speaker 1: him a Super Bowl. How'd you feel about that game.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Last night, Dan?
- 10:23Speaker 7: Yeah, it was a rough one. Quickly about Herbstreet. Here's
- 10:25Speaker 7: the one thing, though. You can criticize him all you want.
- 10:28Speaker 7: Here's the one thing about Herbstreet. He has a dog.
- 10:31Speaker 3: He does. It's adorable.
- 10:33Speaker 7: Peter.
- 10:34Speaker 3: I mean, happy birthday to Peter. So say what you want.
- 10:36Speaker 5: It's his dog's birthday.
- 10:37Speaker 3: We sang him happy birthday on the air. It's Jason
- 10:40Speaker 3: Stewart's birthday here at Fox Sports Radio. Wow. Happy birthday,
- 10:44Speaker 3: Jay Stu. Had to get that one in.
- 10:47Speaker 7: Sam Darnold was giving gifts to the Broncos last night
- 10:50Speaker 7: with the two late interceptions. And it has been a problem.
- 10:53Speaker 7: And if you guys, well, Stu may remember. I know
- 10:56Speaker 7: Izzy doesn't. Last year when Sam Darnold threw four interceptions
- 10:59Speaker 7: against the Rams in a game that they lost by two.
- 11:02Speaker 7: Ernest Jones went to the podium and was like, if
- 11:05Speaker 7: you don't believe in our quarterback, bleep you. And it
- 11:07Speaker 7: felt like this turning point in the season. Darnold threw
- 11:10Speaker 7: four interceptions over the next 10 games. That includes the
- 11:13Speaker 7: playoff run where he didn't throw an interception during those
- 11:16Speaker 7: three playoff games.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Not one. Yeah, not one. Zero.
- 11:19Speaker 7: And you're right about this game against the Rams. It
- 11:22Speaker 7: was one of his top passing performances that he had
- 11:26Speaker 7: last season. And it happened when they needed it the
- 11:28Speaker 7: most in the NFC Championship. But when Ernest Jones said
- 11:31Speaker 7: that last season, Sam Darnold was leading the NFL in turnovers.
- 11:36Speaker 7: And there was no way that that could happen. stay
- 11:39Speaker 7: that way if the seahawks were going to do anything
- 11:41Speaker 7: and it stopped and i think that is a direct
- 11:43Speaker 7: reflection of their success so now when you've only played
- 11:46Speaker 7: four full games they're three and three he hasn't played
- 11:50Speaker 7: in you know two you got hurt in the you
- 11:52Speaker 7: know four snaps in and then missed the next week
- 11:55Speaker 7: so in the four full games that he's played he's
- 11:57Speaker 7: thrown seven interceptions So there is a Sam Darnold problem.
- 12:00Speaker 7: There was no Ernest Jones last night standing up to
- 12:02Speaker 7: the microphone and being like, that's our bleeping quarterback. Because
- 12:06Speaker 7: at one point, you know, if you're the defense, you're like, OK,
- 12:08Speaker 7: what do we have to do? They didn't have 200
- 12:10Speaker 7: yards of total offense last night. And somehow we lost
- 12:13Speaker 7: 17 to 14.
- 12:15Speaker 3: That's our quarterback. He cost us the game. You want
- 12:18Speaker 3: Drew Locke, don't you? You do. I feel it did.
- 12:20Speaker 5: I think that.
- 12:22Speaker 7: I just need somebody who doesn't turn over the football.
- 12:24Speaker 7: And if that's Drew Locke, then have it be Drew Locke.
- 12:26Speaker 7: But that defense is so elite that it's being wasted.
- 12:30Speaker 7: Like the Broncos didn't have to do anything because of
- 12:32Speaker 7: where Donald threw that interception in overtime last night. The
- 12:36Speaker 7: play that they had for Bo Nix on that third
- 12:38Speaker 7: down that made Matthew Fitzpatrick or Matt Fitzpatrick so mad or.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Ryan Fitzpatrick, excuse me.
- 12:43Speaker 5: Thinking of the golf.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Tomato, tomato.
- 12:46Speaker 7: The third round play. But that was just like a
- 12:49Speaker 7: run out to the right, right? Just a little, we'll
- 12:51Speaker 7: kick the 53 yarder if we have to.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Yeah, there was part of me yesterday that was smiling
- 12:57Speaker 4: at Bo, because.
- 12:57Speaker 5: I told you guys on Tuesday.
- 12:59Speaker 4: I said, I feel like Arch Manning could take Bo
- 13:01Speaker 4: Nix's spot today and play better.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:04Speaker 5: And so there was, you know.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Jared Stidham might be able to do it. Probably. I mean.
- 13:08Speaker 4: You know, the one thing about Bo that you would
- 13:11Speaker 4: sort of give him, you know, credit for is, hey,
- 13:14Speaker 4: he can execute a game plan. You can give him, hey,
- 13:16Speaker 4: first read, second read.
- 13:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 13:18Speaker 3: I'll try to run.
- 13:18Speaker 4: I'll get rid of it. He can't even do that.
- 13:21Speaker 4: He can't even, like, find the angles for the screen pass.
- 13:24Speaker 4: He can't even. manipulate blocks to get one yard on
- 13:27Speaker 4: a quarterback run.
- 13:29Speaker 3: I think his confidence is a bit shot. I think
- 13:31Speaker 3: there's a rift there.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I think he's still upset about Sean Payton and the
- 13:34Speaker 1: comments about how hurt he was after the season last year.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I don't know if he's entirely healthy. He doesn't look
- 13:39Speaker 1: as confident. I just want to give you the numbers
- 13:41Speaker 1: on Sam Darnold last year in a 31-27 win over
- 13:45Speaker 1: the Rams at FC Championship Game for the right to
- 13:48Speaker 1: go to the Super Bowl.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Why am I yelling?
- 13:51Speaker 1: He was 25 of 36, 346, three touchdowns, no interceptions,
- 13:57Speaker 1: and a rating which I believe is the highest in
- 13:58Speaker 1: championship game history of 127.8.
- 14:00Speaker 4: And that's why the Rams went to go get Miles
- 14:03Speaker 4: Garrett and bring back Aaron Donald.
- 14:05Speaker 5: So that could never happen again.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But you can't bail on a guy who did that
- 14:09Speaker 1: for you.
- 14:09Speaker 3: You can't.
- 14:10Speaker 4: I'm just saying, like, when things aren't perfect, yes he
- 14:14Speaker 4: is quite imperfect as.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Well you know yes be sure to catch live editions
- 14:19Speaker 2: of stew gods and company live weekdays at 3 p.m
- 14:23Speaker 2: eastern 12 p.m pacific on fox sports radio and the
- 14:26Speaker 2: iheart radio.
- 14:27Speaker 3: App dan did you say jeremiah love was out this
- 14:32Speaker 3: week was that the uh oh wow yes i have
- 14:35Speaker 3: to pick up.
- 14:35Speaker 1: His backup tyler algier oh real uh he's probably take
- 14:40Speaker 1: it i mean This is how I do my fantasy
- 14:44Speaker 1: lineup with you, with the updates from Dan Byer.
- 14:47Speaker 5: I was thinking the same thing when he said Rishi Rice,
- 14:48Speaker 5: because I got him.
- 14:49Speaker 3: I'm going to get him out of my lineup. But
- 14:51Speaker 3: you had no idea until Dan said it, right?
- 14:52Speaker 5: No, thank you, Dan.
- 14:54Speaker 3: My man.
- 14:54Speaker 7: I'll tell you what, I've done this for 20 years.
- 14:57Speaker 7: And now, like, if you went back 15 years ago.
- 15:00Speaker 7: I am not getting in-depth on the injury reports on Fridays.
- 15:04Speaker 7: Now I think it's the only thing people care about,
- 15:06Speaker 7: that this guy practiced.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Is he questionable? Is he not?
- 15:08Speaker 2: Yes.
- 15:09Speaker 7: Because of fantasy football and obviously gambling being more prevalent.
- 15:13Speaker 7: But I think that's all the people care about on Friday.
- 15:16Speaker 1: 3 o'clock has changed, Dan, as time moves on here.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Everyone knows by 3 o'clock that Darnold was awful, that
- 15:23Speaker 1: Bo Nix was terrible, Darnold threw two interceptions. They just
- 15:26Speaker 1: want their fantasy news on the way home from work.
- 15:29Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? Did Chris Olave practice, right? Yes.
- 15:32Speaker 5: Did he practice in a giant helmet?
- 15:34Speaker 1: Yes, but I'm glad that in 2026 the sports update.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Still has some sort of value to somebody, you know? Absolutely.
- 15:41Speaker 5: That's what we're here for.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Thank you, Dan. We appreciate it.
- 15:46Speaker 1: College football expansion, the playoff going to 24 teams. Um,
- 15:50Speaker 1: no stop in the middle, just straight from 12 to 24.
- 15:53Speaker 3: What are your thoughts here?
- 15:55Speaker 4: There's a, I have a couple of thoughts. I mean,
- 15:56Speaker 4: the first one is why did we rush to this?
- 16:00Speaker 4: Like there's no turning back. You've never seen a league
- 16:04Speaker 4: go less playoff teams, right? So it's, this is what
- 16:08Speaker 4: it's going to be. If not for a long time,
- 16:10Speaker 4: probably not going to grow from 24, but this is,
- 16:12Speaker 4: is what it's going to be. And we had, I
- 16:15Speaker 4: don't remember how many years we had the four team.
- 16:17Speaker 4: We've only had two.
- 16:18Speaker 5: This would be three.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Seasons of the 12-team playoff. And it's just, why didn't
- 16:24Speaker 4: we let this sort of flesh out a little bit?
- 16:26Speaker 4: Why didn't we just let people say, hey, you know what?
- 16:29Speaker 3: This is awesome.
- 16:30Speaker 4: We still have stakes in the regular season for the
- 16:33Speaker 4: most part, because it's an elite group of 12 teams
- 16:35Speaker 4: that make it. And we get these great playoffs at
- 16:39Speaker 4: the end that kind of feel like professional playoffs and
- 16:41Speaker 4: keep the postseason going for longer.
- 16:44Speaker 5: And you know what?
- 16:45Speaker 4: Still keeps the bowl game somewhat relevant, because you can
- 16:47Speaker 4: kill time watching those bowl games. But like, Now, it's just,
- 16:51Speaker 4: all right, we have to fix something that didn't need fixing,
- 16:55Speaker 4: and it just took, what, just a few years, a
- 16:57Speaker 4: couple of years for them to double the amount of
- 16:59Speaker 4: playoff teams. It doesn't seem to make a whole lot
- 17:01Speaker 4: of sense to me.
- 17:02Speaker 3: The short answer is money, and you know that, right?
- 17:04Speaker 5: But they're taking away the conference championship games, right?
- 17:07Speaker 3: Yes.
- 17:08Speaker 5: And there's money there.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Yes.
- 17:10Speaker 4: They're taking probably attention and some money away from bowl games.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Right, but they're adding more home games, you know, playoff games.
- 17:17Speaker 1: They are adding that, right?
- 17:19Speaker 3: By the way, I'm with you. I think 24 is
- 17:21Speaker 3: absolutely absurd. It takes... The thing that.
- 17:25Speaker 1: College football had down when it was four teams, and
- 17:28Speaker 1: they still have it to an extent at 12 teams,
- 17:31Speaker 1: you're right, is the fact that the regular season was
- 17:34Speaker 1: so meaningful. That no longer is the case with a
- 17:37Speaker 1: 2014 playoff.
- 17:38Speaker 3: What I mean is Notre Dame, BYU, they play this week.
- 17:42Speaker 1: In a 24-team playoff, that game is going to be meaningless.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Both teams are going to get in.
- 17:48Speaker 5: And correct me if I'm wrong here.
- 17:49Speaker 4: You've got 24 teams, so you've got to have at
- 17:53Speaker 4: least five weeks of playoffs, right?
- 17:55Speaker 7: Yes.
- 17:56Speaker 5: That's almost half of the regular season.
- 17:59Speaker 3: That's what they want.
- 18:00Speaker 5: That's too much time.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Yes, but college football, so this is what they know, Izzy,
- 18:03Speaker 3: and you know this. They have us. They can make
- 18:07Speaker 3: it 64, and we're still going to watch.
- 18:09Speaker 5: I don't think that that's true.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Really?
- 18:11Speaker 4: Like, look, I think the 2014 playoff, yes, will I
- 18:15Speaker 4: watch it?
- 18:16Speaker 5: Yes. Will I have watched a.
- 18:18Speaker 4: Good late season matchup between number four and number 22?
- 18:24Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 18:25Speaker 4: I would have watched that anyway. It's just, you know, getting,
- 18:28Speaker 4: I guess, more dollars from sponsors or what have you
- 18:30Speaker 4: because it feels like a bigger game. They're putting bigger
- 18:32Speaker 4: stakes on it because it's an elimination game, but it
- 18:36Speaker 4: still doesn't it still wouldn't have taken away for me anyway,
- 18:39Speaker 4: in my opinion, the viewership from some big games, because,
- 18:43Speaker 4: you know, like you said, BYU, Notre Dame, I only
- 18:46Speaker 4: realized yesterday.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Wow.
- 18:47Speaker 4: That's that's this week. That's a huge game. I didn't
- 18:49Speaker 4: realize BYU was still this good. And I'm probably going
- 18:53Speaker 4: to be glued to that game. But if this was
- 18:56Speaker 4: during the 24 team playoff.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Not so certain.
- 18:58Speaker 5: I don't think so.
- 18:59Speaker 6: Right.
- 18:59Speaker 5: I think so.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Yes. Plus Ohio state, Indiana, which is also this weekend.
- 19:04Speaker 1: What I love about the 12 team format is, is
- 19:06Speaker 1: you have some of these de facto playoff games during
- 19:09Speaker 1: the regular season. Ohio State can ill afford to lose
- 19:13Speaker 1: another game. There's pressure on Ohio State. But in a
- 19:17Speaker 1: 2014 playoff, there is zero pressure for them to win
- 19:20Speaker 1: this game and zero pressure for Indiana while we're at
- 19:24Speaker 1: it to win the game as well. Other than seeding
- 19:27Speaker 1: and home field and stuff like that.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:28Speaker 4: In fact, if you're the loser of one of these
- 19:30Speaker 4: games where you figure out, oh, okay, I'll probably still
- 19:32Speaker 4: be in the 2014 playoff, You're begging for a rematch.
- 19:35Speaker 5: You'll probably have an advantage the second time around.
- 19:38Speaker 4: You know, one little thing that just made me laugh
- 19:40Speaker 4: about this when it comes up is, all right, so
- 19:42Speaker 4: obviously with the the the four team playoff we had
- 19:46Speaker 4: the the preview shows right to say hey who's currently
- 19:49Speaker 4: ranked one through four right i think what they'll start
- 19:51Speaker 4: like midway through the season yes and now with 12
- 19:53Speaker 4: they do the same thing but once they get to
- 19:55Speaker 4: 24 The top 25 poll that they put out every
- 19:59Speaker 4: single week is basically going to be like, hey, there
- 20:01Speaker 4: you go.
- 20:02Speaker 5: They're 24 plus one. Those are probably the teams that
- 20:04Speaker 5: are going to be in.
- 20:05Speaker 3: It should be the AP top 24.
- 20:08Speaker 5: That's what I was laughing at.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I was like, wow.
- 20:10Speaker 4: That team that's ranked in the 25th every week is
- 20:12Speaker 4: just like, man, we're ranked, but we are such losers.
- 20:15Speaker 5: We're not getting in there.
- 20:16Speaker 3: No one's here to put it on the poll, but
- 20:18Speaker 3: someone put it on the poll.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Should the AP top 25 be renamed AP top 24?
- 20:25Speaker 5: It's gotta be, they gotta just cut that last team off.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Why not?
- 20:28Speaker 1: So this is funny because in a 24 team playoff
- 20:31Speaker 1: right now, you would have SMU making the playoff. Boise
- 20:35Speaker 1: state would also be a playoff team. And if you
- 20:38Speaker 1: look at like years past, we were having some fun
- 20:41Speaker 1: with this on the pods this morning. If you look
- 20:44Speaker 1: over like the last 10 years, let's say, and, and
- 20:48Speaker 1: you put in a 24 team playoff and look at
- 20:50Speaker 1: some of the coaches and that would still have their
- 20:53Speaker 1: jobs today. If indeed there was a 2014 playoff installed
- 20:56Speaker 1: a decade ago, James Franklin would be on the Mount
- 21:00Speaker 1: Rushmore of Penn state football. He would have made the
- 21:03Speaker 1: playoffs like seven consecutive years as the 20th team in
- 21:06Speaker 1: the country.
- 21:08Speaker 4: There's, there's a lot of sort of consequences involved here.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Like if you are maybe unintended consequences, if you are
- 21:15Speaker 4: a coach that doesn't make the 2014 playoff three years
- 21:20Speaker 4: in a row, Is your job in jeopardy? Because it
- 21:23Speaker 4: seems so much easier to get there. Yeah.
- 21:25Speaker 5: There's going to be more fired coaches, basically, as a
- 21:28Speaker 5: result of this?
- 21:28Speaker 3: Well, there's going to be more.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Well, I don't know.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I think the coaches who already have a ridiculous amount
- 21:34Speaker 1: of job security have even more now. Because Lincoln Riley
- 21:37Speaker 1: can now point to the fact, hey, in a 2014 playoff,
- 21:40Speaker 1: he's going to say, hey, I've made the playoffs the
- 21:42Speaker 1: last four years.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Right?
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Yes. Here's the other thing that, I mean, I hate
- 21:46Speaker 4: about it, and I mentioned this a second ago, but
- 21:48Speaker 4: The conference championship games?
- 21:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 21:50Speaker 5: I love those games.
- 21:51Speaker 3: I know.
- 21:51Speaker 5: Dan, I love those games.
- 21:53Speaker 4: I don't know about you, but like, you know, the
- 21:56Speaker 4: idea of winning a conference championship, yeah, it's fine with
- 21:59Speaker 4: a regular season championship, but there isn't that moment necessarily
- 22:03Speaker 4: to celebrate it unless you get situations where, hey, you know,
- 22:06Speaker 4: top two teams in the conference happen to be playing
- 22:08Speaker 4: against each other late in the season for the conference championship,
- 22:11Speaker 4: but Yeah, those games are, I can't think of a
- 22:14Speaker 4: better word, titillating.
- 22:15Speaker 3: I love those games. Right, but they think you'll love
- 22:17Speaker 3: the playoff games more.
- 22:18Speaker 4: I won't. I guarantee you I won't because there's going
- 22:21Speaker 4: to be more weeks of it. That's going to be
- 22:23Speaker 4: the end of conference play, and that's something that regardless
- 22:25Speaker 4: of whether you win a national championship or not, you
- 22:28Speaker 4: can hang your head on, hey, we've won four straight
- 22:30Speaker 4: SEC championship games, and it's just like that's something.
- 22:33Speaker 3: That very rarely happens.
- 22:34Speaker 1: We'll get to Dan and Sherman Oaks in just a
- 22:36Speaker 1: second here. The other thing is this is not the
- 22:37Speaker 1: NCAA basketball tournament. where occasionally you'll have a 15 seed,
- 22:41Speaker 1: beat a 2, and a 16, beat a 1, and
- 22:45Speaker 1: 14 and 13.
- 22:46Speaker 3: You'll have upsets. You're not going to have upsets here,
- 22:49Speaker 3: for the most part. Not that large.
- 22:50Speaker 1: You're not going to have it where, you know, I
- 22:52Speaker 1: don't know, Tulane is going to Alabama and beating them
- 22:55Speaker 1: in the first round of the playoff.
- 22:56Speaker 3: You're not going to see that. There is such a
- 22:59Speaker 3: big gulf between the top 10 teams, and in some cases,
- 23:04Speaker 3: some years, the top 6, 7, or 8 teams.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Than the bottom 10 teams, if that kind of makes sense.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Like 10 through 20 is a big drop-off.
- 23:12Speaker 3: What do you have, Dan?
- 23:12Speaker 7: I was just going to say, kind of on the
- 23:14Speaker 7: heels of that, my issue with it is I don't
- 23:16Speaker 7: even think we care about the first-round games in the
- 23:18Speaker 7: 12-team bracket. Why would we care about them in the
- 23:21Speaker 7: 24-team bracket? Texas A & M- Miami is maybe the game
- 23:24Speaker 7: that we remember, but nobody remembers Oregon James Madison. No
- 23:29Speaker 7: one remembers Ole Miss-Tulane. Even when we had marquee matchups
- 23:33Speaker 7: that first year, and it was so different to see
- 23:37Speaker 7: Clemson go to Texas. I don't remember a lot from
- 23:40Speaker 7: that game. I remember Ohio State rolled up Tennessee, but
- 23:43Speaker 7: that's because I follow the Buckeyes. So I remember that game.
- 23:45Speaker 7: But the other games didn't necessarily resonate. So why we
- 23:49Speaker 7: would want more of that, I have no idea.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Well, that's what Izzy is saying. He remembers Alabama-Georgia in
- 23:56Speaker 1: an SEC championship game. Give me the first round playoff
- 24:01Speaker 1: game that you remember in a 12 team format.
- 24:03Speaker 5: There's a reason.
- 24:04Speaker 4: There's multiple reasons, but there's never been a movie called
- 24:07Speaker 4: any given Saturday because it doesn't happen that regularly.
- 24:11Speaker 5: It's any given Sunday.
- 24:12Speaker 3: I get it.
- 24:12Speaker 5: Even in the playoffs, you can get, you know, a
- 24:15Speaker 5: wild card shocker.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:17Speaker 5: And you can get, you know, wildcard team making to.
- 24:19Speaker 3: The Super Bowl. NFL wildcard teams win the Super Bowl
- 24:23Speaker 3: and go to the Super Bowl all the time. You're
- 24:25Speaker 3: not going to have that in this.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Dan, you would agree you're not going to have like
- 24:28Speaker 1: a Boise State making a run through Alabama, Georgia and
- 24:32Speaker 1: whoever else to get to a to get to a championship.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Correct. And if we do, we're not going to be interested.
- 24:38Speaker 3: We're not going to care.
- 24:41Speaker 7: And that's the biggest part of it. It doesn't grab
- 24:46Speaker 7: our attention like a normal Cinderella would. At some point,
- 24:49Speaker 7: they make it to the semifinals and get rolled, and
- 24:51Speaker 7: then we're like, great, this is supposed to be one
- 24:53Speaker 7: of the three best games of the year, and now
- 24:55Speaker 7: it's 49-10 in the third quarter.
- 24:57Speaker 3: That's no fun.
- 24:59Speaker 4: This is where I'm just, I still haven't had anybody
- 25:02Speaker 4: answer this question for me well, is like, why did
- 25:04Speaker 4: we rush to this? What were the focus groups that said, hey,
- 25:07Speaker 4: oh yeah, more playoffs are going to make me watch
- 25:10Speaker 4: more If they were college football fans, they would probably
- 25:13Speaker 4: say the opposite. They would probably say what we're saying.
- 25:15Speaker 4: They would probably say, hey, we love our rivalries. We
- 25:18Speaker 4: love our big games during the regular season.
- 25:20Speaker 5: We're good with 12.
- 25:20Speaker 4: We weren't sure we were going to be good with 12,
- 25:23Speaker 4: but now after a couple of years, we've seen it.
- 25:25Speaker 5: We're good with 12.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Because I think after four, most people are just like, hey,
- 25:28Speaker 4: let's stop at eight. When they jump to 12 and
- 25:30Speaker 4: it's like, might that be too much? Turns out it's okay. Yes.
- 25:33Speaker 3: It's okay. Now we're at 12, but this is a
- 25:34Speaker 3: big jump. This is too big of a jump.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Why are we doubling it? It's unnecessary.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Why are we not stopping at 16?
- 25:39Speaker 3: Right. See how that feels for a second.
- 25:42Speaker 7: I also think that there's the TV aspect of this
- 25:45Speaker 7: as well. And I think that the ultimate goal was
- 25:47Speaker 7: that ESPN is going to negotiate and then they're going
- 25:50Speaker 7: to find out they didn't want to pay that much
- 25:52Speaker 7: money for this bracket. So then now Fox comes in,
- 25:56Speaker 7: NBC comes in, maybe they're the ones that are paying
- 25:58Speaker 7: for it. So it's more money. with more networks involved.
- 26:01Speaker 7: And now it seems like ESPN has just got a
- 26:03Speaker 7: deal to run this thing, and I'm not sure other
- 26:06Speaker 7: networks are coming in. So I don't even know if
- 26:08Speaker 7: that has worked out in the ideal way that the
- 26:11Speaker 7: Big Ten, because the Big Ten's been the one behind this,
- 26:14Speaker 7: really wanted this to work out. I think that they
- 26:16Speaker 7: wanted their broadcast partners of Fox and NBC to throw
- 26:19Speaker 7: even more money so they could get some of these
- 26:20Speaker 7: playoff games.
- 26:21Speaker 3: And I don't even know if that's happening.
- 26:23Speaker 5: I'm not surprised that ESPN doesn't make great decisions.
- 26:28Speaker 4: I think they've been on a streak of pretty poor decisions.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I'm not certain Dabo Swinney would be on the hot
- 26:33Speaker 1: seat right now because I just keep going to random
- 26:36Speaker 1: years and where Clemson was ranked.
- 26:39Speaker 3: And I just went back two years ago. They were 14th.
- 26:41Speaker 3: So Dabo could have said, hey, I'm in the playoffs
- 26:43Speaker 3: last year.
- 26:44Speaker 1: And the whole thing is patently absurd.
- 26:45Speaker 3: It really is.
- 26:46Speaker 5: And again.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Oh, go ahead, Izzy. I'm sorry.
- 26:48Speaker 5: No, no.
- 26:49Speaker 4: I was just going to say, again, I just don't understand.
- 26:51Speaker 4: But if you're telling me the reason is the money,
- 26:53Speaker 4: explain it to me in terms that I could understand,
- 26:56Speaker 4: because I understand if the money's there, if things become
- 26:59Speaker 4: more interesting. But I don't believe that to be the case,
- 27:02Speaker 4: at least not for the first two rounds of what's
- 27:04Speaker 4: going to be a five week playoff.
- 27:06Speaker 3: That's too long.
- 27:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:07Speaker 7: But is it like the money's already paid for? Like
- 27:09Speaker 7: if Fox says we want in for X amount and
- 27:12Speaker 7: it would be more than what, you know, they could
- 27:14Speaker 7: get just solely from ESPN. They don't care how good
- 27:17Speaker 7: the games are.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Right. But I do think it's already cashed.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I do think there's something to some of these schools
- 27:22Speaker 1: getting home playoff games and getting more than one, meaning
- 27:26Speaker 1: the gate.
- 27:26Speaker 3: For that is is enormous.
- 27:28Speaker 7: Right.
- 27:28Speaker 3: As opposed to having to go to Tampa to play
- 27:31Speaker 3: in some meaningful hole.
- 27:32Speaker 7: Right.
- 27:32Speaker 3: You know, they get a home game.
- 27:34Speaker 6: Right.
- 27:34Speaker 7: There's also there was also this thrown about and this
- 27:36Speaker 7: hasn't been brought up since. But there was talk of
- 27:38Speaker 7: if you eliminate the conference championship games. How about having
- 27:42Speaker 7: a mini tournament with like your third through sixth place teams,
- 27:45Speaker 7: kind of like you even see in in the in
- 27:49Speaker 7: European soccer and in some of the levels where you
- 27:51Speaker 7: would have like the third place team play the sixth
- 27:53Speaker 7: place team and then the next week. They play for
- 27:55Speaker 7: their way into the tournament. There was talk about that
- 27:58Speaker 7: months ago, maybe a year or so ago, to try
- 28:01Speaker 7: to replace some of the value of the conference championship games.
- 28:04Speaker 3: I don't know if that's.
- 28:04Speaker 7: Realistically looked at, but that's how a conference could make
- 28:07Speaker 7: that up. But then again, now you're playing less conference
- 28:10Speaker 7: games probably to accommodate whatever sort of bracket you would
- 28:13Speaker 7: like to have to end up allowing that sort of
- 28:17Speaker 7: route to the playoff.
- 28:18Speaker 4: I'm just happy these kids are actually getting paid now
- 28:20Speaker 4: because they've had to put your body at that type
- 28:22Speaker 4: of risk week after week after week with big stakes.
- 28:25Speaker 5: You know people are going to be playing their brains out.
- 28:27Speaker 5: They deserve to get paid.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I'm looking at the AP Top 24 from two years ago.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Let me give you some of the teams that would
- 28:34Speaker 1: have made the playoffs in a 2014 format. First off,
- 28:38Speaker 1: from 11 down all the way to 25, they have
- 28:41Speaker 1: at least three losses. But these are the teams that
- 28:44Speaker 1: would have made it in. a nine and four South
- 28:47Speaker 1: Carolina team, a 10 and three Syracuse team.
- 28:51Speaker 6: Wow.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Army would have been in what army army. And I
- 28:55Speaker 1: think they would have traveled to Alabama to play them.
- 29:01Speaker 1: You and LV would have made it. Memphis would have
- 29:04Speaker 1: made it.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Colorado would be on the outside looking in. They were 25. Yes.
- 29:08Speaker 5: That's crazy.
- 29:10Speaker 4: By the way, you no longer need the others receiving
- 29:13Speaker 4: votes because you'll just have 25 out there. It doesn't
- 29:15Speaker 4: mean that one dangling team out there.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Northwestern would have a hell of an argument this year.
- 29:21Speaker 3: They're 25 right now.
- 29:22Speaker 7: I love when people say, how are we going to
- 29:23Speaker 7: decipher between all these eight and four teams? I think
- 29:26Speaker 7: the question is, how do you decipher between an eight
- 29:28Speaker 7: and four power for school and an 11 and one.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Group of six school?
- 29:34Speaker 7: Like that's where I think it's interesting because the group
- 29:36Speaker 7: of six is also is only going to get one
- 29:39Speaker 7: team in and it's going to be their highest ranked.
- 29:40Speaker 7: What about if you have a couple, what about if
- 29:42Speaker 7: you've got, you know, Boise state and San Diego state
- 29:45Speaker 7: or whatever, and now you've got to compare their resumes
- 29:47Speaker 7: like eight and four compared to their 11 and one
- 29:50Speaker 7: is probably going to look much better. That's more of
- 29:53Speaker 7: the question that I have in, in how this is
- 29:55Speaker 7: all going to work out because I, That's the same
- 29:57Speaker 7: argument we have in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, right?
- 30:01Speaker 7: How does Miami of Ohio get in or how does
- 30:03Speaker 7: North Carolina get in or Indiana? That's where our debates fall.
- 30:06Speaker 7: And I think that could happen here in college football.
- 30:08Speaker 5: I'm not going to lie, Dan.
- 30:09Speaker 4: One of the things as I get older that I
- 30:11Speaker 4: just feel like I never really needed to learn. And
- 30:14Speaker 4: it's still very confusing to me is all that sort
- 30:16Speaker 4: of distinction in college football, the power five, the group
- 30:19Speaker 4: of six. Like, I don't know what's what I really
- 30:21Speaker 4: don't know.
- 30:21Speaker 3: It's confusing. Just give me 24 teams, I guess.
- 30:24Speaker 5: Right.
- 30:24Speaker 3: And just let's have a playoff.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Godson Company
- 30:30Speaker 2: live weekdays at 3 p.m. Eastern, 12 p.m.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Pacific.
- 30:36Speaker 4: There's no time like October. The World Series begins next Friday,
- 30:40Speaker 4: streaming live on Fox 1. The National League champion Brewers
- 30:43Speaker 4: will take on either the Rays or Guardians live from
- 30:45Speaker 4: Milwaukee next Friday for Game 1. This is Winner Go
- 30:48Speaker 4: Home Baseball, and every pitch matters. This is the moment
- 30:51Speaker 4: the whole season's been building to. Every pitch, every swing,
- 30:54Speaker 4: every walk-off, don't let it pass you by. There's no
- 30:57Speaker 4: time like October, and there's no better place to stream
- 31:00Speaker 4: the magic than Fox One. Stream the World Series live
- 31:04Speaker 4: on Fox One. Stu, I don't know if you saw
- 31:10Speaker 4: this in the postgame. Apparently, we have the sound of this,
- 31:13Speaker 4: but Jake Bowers, the NLCS MVP, said something that motivated
- 31:19Speaker 4: him about playing the Dodgers in the NLCS this year.
- 31:24Speaker 4: If we have the sound of that, let's hit that now.
- 31:28Speaker 5: Last year was a little bit eye-opening.
- 31:33Speaker 6: We won the DS against the Cubs, and I think
- 31:36Speaker 6: we kind of celebrated like that was something. Those guys
- 31:41Speaker 6: swept us, they sent us home, and you would have
- 31:44Speaker 6: thought it was a handshake line at a spring training game.
- 31:49Speaker 3: So stupid.
- 31:51Speaker 5: You can't win, can you? If you beat somebody and.
- 31:56Speaker 4: You celebrate like, again, that was the DS or whatever,
- 32:00Speaker 4: and you celebrate like it was the World Series.
- 32:03Speaker 5: They're going to be like, oh, you're celebrating too hard.
- 32:06Speaker 4: If you don't celebrate hard enough, they're like, oh, you're
- 32:09Speaker 4: not celebrating enough.
- 32:10Speaker 5: Give us some credit.
- 32:11Speaker 4: I was I was surprised by that because I thought
- 32:14Speaker 4: what I you know what I thought he was going
- 32:15Speaker 4: to say. Yeah, they you know, they were sort of
- 32:17Speaker 4: flaunting on the field. They were doing what was the
- 32:20Speaker 4: the Yankees lose who was doing that during after they
- 32:23Speaker 4: beat the Yankees. that stuff, like, I thought that would
- 32:26Speaker 4: be what pissed him off, but no. It was just
- 32:29Speaker 4: the fact that they were too nonchalant. He wanted some
- 32:31Speaker 4: more chalant in the celebration there. That part, to me,
- 32:34Speaker 4: was kind of wild.
- 32:35Speaker 1: He was pretty incredible in this series, though. I mean,
- 32:37Speaker 1: and Matt Viscursion is going to join us. He's a
- 32:39Speaker 1: lifelong Brewers fan. He'll join us in hour number two.
- 32:43Speaker 3: He was incredible. I mean, to do what he did
- 32:46Speaker 3: against two of the greatest postseason pitchers, Yamamoto and Snell,
- 32:50Speaker 3: that we've ever seen, certainly in recent history... Just incredible
- 32:54Speaker 3: the way he extends at bats.
- 32:56Speaker 4: I have a theory on this. Did you know the
- 32:59Speaker 4: details on him? Like he was basically willing to retire,
- 33:03Speaker 4: I think. But then I think his wife said he
- 33:04Speaker 4: was going to have another kid. And then he's like,
- 33:06Speaker 4: I just got to play for the insurance.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Well, nothing will make you prolong your career like a
- 33:12Speaker 1: new child.
- 33:13Speaker 7: I'm not going to ever know that.
- 33:17Speaker 4: But the thing about that that made me laugh or
- 33:19Speaker 4: that made me think was just like, yeah, no, there's
- 33:21Speaker 4: no pressure on him.
- 33:22Speaker 5: He's literally just playing for the insurance. Why does it matter? Yes. Oh,
- 33:27Speaker 5: they're going to blame me.
- 33:28Speaker 3: I don't care.
- 33:28Speaker 5: I'm getting my insurance. Yes.
- 33:31Speaker 1: It was very cool because you have the whole, you know,
- 33:35Speaker 1: I guess larger scope here.
- 33:37Speaker 3: You have the collective bargaining. You have this. We're headed
- 33:40Speaker 3: towards a strike. But I think baseball, I think the
- 33:43Speaker 3: players can say, hey.
- 33:45Speaker 1: The team that didn't trade for Scooble beat the team
- 33:48Speaker 1: that traded everything for Scooble and spent five times the
- 33:52Speaker 1: amount of money that we spent. And you're going to
- 33:54Speaker 1: have a Rays or Guardians and the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 33:58Speaker 3: You're going to have that as your World Series. That's
- 34:00Speaker 3: a win for the players, I think.
- 34:01Speaker 5: Have you heard the conspiracy theory going around?
- 34:03Speaker 3: Yes, I have. Well, give it to me. I want
- 34:07Speaker 3: to make sure we're hearing the same one.
- 34:08Speaker 4: That the Dodgers sort of tanked this so that they
- 34:11Speaker 4: can go into next offseason saying, you see, all the
- 34:14Speaker 4: small market teams.
- 34:15Speaker 5: Have made it.
- 34:16Speaker 4: To the World Series or, you know, three of the
- 34:18Speaker 4: four in the CSs and two in the World Series.
- 34:21Speaker 5: We don't need a salary cap. We're good. And then
- 34:23Speaker 5: they'll just spend, you know, their butts off and win
- 34:25Speaker 5: the next five.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Yes. They'll have a billion dollar payroll next year.
- 34:29Speaker 4: I did think, though, it was it was funny because
- 34:31Speaker 4: I was thinking with Shohei Otani.
- 34:33Speaker 5: Right.
- 34:34Speaker 3: It was what were.
- 34:36Speaker 5: People surprised that a guy who did all of those.
- 34:39Speaker 4: Things and and pitched and hit all of those games
- 34:42Speaker 4: that they that now he's hurt. And, like, you know,
- 34:46Speaker 4: he's exhausted himself too much that he's hurt? Or were
- 34:48Speaker 4: they just surprised that him being hurt made him look
- 34:52Speaker 4: as bad as he did?
- 34:53Speaker 3: Wow. Good question. We'll get back to it in a second.
- 34:55Speaker 1: I am told that Dan has breaking news coming out
- 34:58Speaker 1: of Green Bay.
- 34:58Speaker 3: What do you have, Dan?
- 35:02Speaker 2: Breaking news from Fox Sports.
- 35:04Speaker 7: Stu Izzy, the National Football League, has released a statement
- 35:07Speaker 7: notifying Josh Jacobs of the Packers. He will be removed
- 35:10Speaker 7: from the commissioner's exempt list on October 19th. That is
- 35:15Speaker 7: on Monday. Jacobs will be eligible to play in week
- 35:18Speaker 7: seven for Green Bay. It's the same exact situation for
- 35:21Speaker 7: Broncos outside linebacker Jonathan Cooper, who is also now off
- 35:25Speaker 7: of the commissioner's exempt list. The NFL says that they
- 35:27Speaker 7: continue to investigate both of the situations involving the players,
- 35:32Speaker 7: and if needed, further punishment could be levied. But Josh
- 35:35Speaker 7: Jacobs is back with the Packers in week seven. Jonathan
- 35:37Speaker 7: Cooper back with the Broncos in week seven.
- 35:40Speaker 3: There's my running back I'm going to pick up.
- 35:42Speaker 5: It's odd, though, Dan.
- 35:43Speaker 4: It feels like they're just sort of saying, hey, we're
- 35:46Speaker 4: still investigating, but.
- 35:47Speaker 5: We're going to let them play.
- 35:49Speaker 7: Yeah, it's interesting, too, because this week Josh Jacobs filed
- 35:52Speaker 7: a lawsuit against an area police department, a local police
- 35:55Speaker 7: department in Green Bay, trying to stop the release of
- 35:58Speaker 7: that video that is apparently out there that we haven't seen.
- 36:02Speaker 7: And whether it comes out or is leaked, I think
- 36:05Speaker 7: that's going to be determined on what's going to happen
- 36:08Speaker 7: with Josh Jacobs. And I guess the NFL is just
- 36:10Speaker 7: saying six games is enough right now, and if they
- 36:13Speaker 7: got to do more, they'll do more.
- 36:14Speaker 5: That's interesting. Yeah, it seems like they're just like, hey,
- 36:17Speaker 5: we don't know what to do.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Let's just let them play, and then we'll figure it
- 36:19Speaker 3: out later.
- 36:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Did you see how emotional Otani was last night when
- 36:23Speaker 1: he hit that home run? I love that because Dodger
- 36:25Speaker 1: fans got their hopes up again, only to be let
- 36:28Speaker 1: down in the end.
- 36:28Speaker 5: Well, that's what it's funny because that's what made me.
- 36:31Speaker 4: So I haven't seen a whole lot of Milwaukee Brewers
- 36:33Speaker 4: games this year, Stu. I'm just not breaking. You're not alone.
- 36:36Speaker 4: But I turned that game on after it was already 4-0.
- 36:41Speaker 4: And the first thing in my head was, all right,
- 36:42Speaker 4: here we go. It's another Yankees Red Sox because the
- 36:44Speaker 4: Dodgers are going to come back and win this thing.
- 36:46Speaker 4: And Tyler Glass now was dealing, blah, blah, blah. I
- 36:49Speaker 4: fell in love with the Brewers in, like, three innings
- 36:51Speaker 4: of play.
- 36:51Speaker 3: How could you not? I mean, those guys, they look.
- 36:54Speaker 5: Tiny, first of all. Half the lineup looks like they're
- 36:56Speaker 5: 5'5 or shorter.
- 36:57Speaker 4: Like, that's probably not true, but they just look it.
- 36:59Speaker 4: And they play baseball the way I remember watching baseball.
- 37:03Speaker 4: It's like, you know, you swing. You don't have to
- 37:05Speaker 4: swing for the fences every time. You steal some bases.
- 37:08Speaker 4: You bunt to try to get on. Like, I think
- 37:10Speaker 4: they're a lot of fun and, you know— I'll probably
- 37:13Speaker 4: watch some World Series games, which is quite the compliment.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Plus, you have Pat Murphy as the manager who seems
- 37:17Speaker 3: like your uncle. Oh, yeah.
- 37:20Speaker 4: I was laughing because the owner was up there pulling
- 37:22Speaker 4: his pants up before he received the trophy.
- 37:26Speaker 5: He looks like another uncle.
- 37:28Speaker 3: But you're right.
- 37:29Speaker 1: They look like a team that spent, I don't know,
- 37:31Speaker 1: $ 160 million less than the Dodgers.
- 37:33Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 37:34Speaker 4: If you work in logistics, you know nothing moves without you.
- 37:37Speaker 4: Companies need skilled people now, and Express Employment Professionals can

- 37:49Speaker 4: Express Pros Pro of the Week. The Pro of the
- 37:51Speaker 4: Week goes to Brewers first baseman Jake Bowers, who grinded
- 37:54Speaker 4: out one at bat after another and drove in six
- 37:57Speaker 4: runs in Milwaukee's series sweep over the Dodgers. Bowers became
- 38:00Speaker 4: the first player in Brewers history to win the LCS
- 38:03Speaker 4: MVP award. Congrats to Jake Bowers for being our Express
- 38:06Speaker 4: Pros Pro of the Week.
- 38:07Speaker 3: That was very heartfelt. I know.
- 38:09Speaker 5: It just felt like, oh.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Matt Viscursion told us that Bowers will never buy a
- 38:14Speaker 1: drink in Milwaukee again. He was that good in that series.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Thanks to Matt Viscursion for joining us. Thanks to the
- 38:20Speaker 1: Bear as well. Thanks to Izzy for joining us. He
- 38:23Speaker 1: is working more and more days with each passing week.
- 38:27Speaker 1: What do you have for us here in the last
- 38:30Speaker 1: couple of minutes of the show?
- 38:31Speaker 3: On the WNBA finals.
- 38:33Speaker 5: Ah, your favorite topic, the WNBA finals.
- 38:36Speaker 4: I just wanted to bring it up because I think
- 38:38Speaker 4: I have kind of an unpopular take on the finals, which,
- 38:42Speaker 4: you know, the season, I believe, was probably its best season,
- 38:45Speaker 4: the WNBA, just in terms of interest and, you know,
- 38:48Speaker 4: the ratings matched up.
- 38:49Speaker 5: The ratings did really well.
- 38:51Speaker 4: I don't love this finals matchup for viewership. okay and
- 38:56Speaker 4: it has nothing to do with like kate and clark
- 38:58Speaker 4: not being there obviously she was the first round knockout
- 39:00Speaker 4: doesn't have anything to do necessarily with certain stars not being.
- 39:04Speaker 1: There uh can i ask you a question and i
- 39:06Speaker 1: i apologize in advance for not knowing this is viewership
- 39:09Speaker 1: up this year has it been up well especially yeah
- 39:11Speaker 1: late in the season from what i saw um there
- 39:13Speaker 1: were that were outranking a bunch of other sports uh
- 39:17Speaker 1: that you know you would think are more popular um
- 39:19Speaker 1: especially like i said late in the season but I
- 39:21Speaker 1: don't really have an answer for the full season.
- 39:24Speaker 4: But in terms of like, I don't remember the last time,
- 39:27Speaker 4: if ever, people have talked about the WNBA this much. Now,
- 39:29Speaker 4: maybe it was all for the wrong reasons, but it
- 39:31Speaker 4: did translate into some good viewing numbers.
- 39:34Speaker 3: Let me clear that up. It was mostly for the
- 39:36Speaker 3: wrong reasons. Mostly, right?
- 39:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 39:40Speaker 4: So if that continues and they drew a lot of
- 39:41Speaker 4: people in and then you're supposed to get the best
- 39:43Speaker 4: on the best, these are two really good defensive teams.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:47Speaker 5: And that's not great.
- 39:48Speaker 2: No.
- 39:49Speaker 5: It's terrible.
- 39:49Speaker 3: It's just not great. It's not what you want.
- 39:51Speaker 4: It's like, I remember 2007, it was Piston Spurs.
- 39:56Speaker 3: Yes.
- 39:56Speaker 4: And I was like, these are two great teams. Like,
- 40:00Speaker 4: I don't want to watch all that great defense all
- 40:02Speaker 4: the time. And then when you got the sport that's growing, growing,
- 40:05Speaker 4: you just want that to continue. I will say the
- 40:08Speaker 4: Angel Reese aspect of it is helpful because good or bad,
- 40:12Speaker 4: people want to see what she's doing.
- 40:14Speaker 3: Yes.
- 40:14Speaker 4: There are people who want to hate on her even further,
- 40:17Speaker 4: even though she just keeps winning and that's what she's
- 40:18Speaker 4: done her whole career.
- 40:19Speaker 3: This is her first final?
- 40:21Speaker 6: Yes.
- 40:21Speaker 3: Okay. She made it to the finals before Caitlin Clark? Absolutely.
- 40:24Speaker 4: I love that. Or they want to watch her fail. Sorry,
- 40:30Speaker 4: I said that already. They want to hate on her
- 40:32Speaker 4: or they want her to succeed because they've been on
- 40:34Speaker 4: her side this whole time. Right.
- 40:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it's just never pretty basketball, even with the Valkyries.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Like, I watch them play.
- 40:41Speaker 5: I do not understand how they're so good.
- 40:43Speaker 4: And it's just defense because nobody really analyzes defense especially well.
- 40:48Speaker 4: Even Gabby Williams, who's been a star, I think she's
- 40:50Speaker 4: on her third team. You know, not the most recognizable,
- 40:55Speaker 4: fun player, athletic player, but just doesn't, you know, jump
- 40:58Speaker 4: off the screen, actually. And I think if you've got— now,
- 41:01Speaker 4: the crowds are going to be great. These are probably
- 41:03Speaker 4: the two most, you know— like the two biggest home
- 41:06Speaker 4: crowds at the moment that really desperately want some success.
- 41:10Speaker 5: But I just don't think it's going to look great.
- 41:12Speaker 4: And people just, you know, people naturally want to rip
- 41:15Speaker 4: on the WNBA if they don't like it. And this
- 41:17Speaker 4: might give them opportunity because it's supposed to be the best.
- 41:20Speaker 6: Of the best.
- 41:20Speaker 3: It's going to be like Broncos and Seahawks.
- 41:22Speaker 5: Oh my God.
- 41:23Speaker 4: It's gotta be better than that.
- 41:25Speaker 5: It's gotta be better than that.
- 41:27Speaker 1: But the difference is that it's unfair to the WNBA
- 41:30Speaker 1: is millions upon millions of people
- 41:32Speaker 3: Will watch that crap.
