Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: At the rate it's going this by election could cost
- 0:02Speaker 1: Labor the real election. Penny Henade is popping out policies
- 0:05Speaker 1: toxic to the general electorate, but very popular with the
- 0:09Speaker 1: ten thousand odd voters that he will need to win
- 0:11Speaker 1: Tammocky Mikoto. First, it was bringing back the gang patches.
- 0:14Speaker 1: You would have heard about that. Labor then had to
- 0:16Speaker 1: hose that down, left Middle New Zealand scratching their heads though,
- 0:20Speaker 1: didn't it because we've been there, done that with gangs
- 0:22Speaker 1: where over it. We just want them sorted. Labour lost
- 0:26Speaker 1: the war on crime and with it the mandate to govern.
- 0:28Speaker 1: You might think it's an issue that they would just
- 0:31Speaker 1: steer clear of, but not Penny, Labour's electoral kryptonite. Last
- 0:35Speaker 1: night he was back at it. I was watching the
- 0:37Speaker 1: debate well with Ordine in Penny, which was actually quite
- 0:40Speaker 1: a good debate. I enjoyed it. Penny was asked about
- 0:43Speaker 1: the cost of living and he said that when Labor
- 0:46Speaker 1: was in power, they were in talks with EWI to
- 0:49Speaker 1: build a third supermarket chain across the country to compete
- 0:53Speaker 1: with the duopoly. Last night he said they'd support it
- 0:57Speaker 1: again if elect it.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Here is what he said when we were last in power,
- 1:01Speaker 2: we were working closely with EWI to introduce a third
- 1:04Speaker 2: grocery provider into the market, to allow our funer to
- 1:07Speaker 2: experience cheaper cope and to make sure that EWE are
- 1:10Speaker 2: part of delivering the answer for our finance. So are
- 1:12Speaker 2: you talking about a Kiwi Kai supermarket chain. We're talking
- 1:15Speaker 2: about EWE lead New Zealand chain that will supply our
- 1:19Speaker 2: funer ere we.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Lead, but funded by who? This is the question what
- 1:23Speaker 1: does support mean? Does that mean taxpayer funding? In twenty
- 1:28Speaker 1: twenty three they were talking about doling out loans, maybe
- 1:31Speaker 1: even grants or taxpayer support to secure land for a
- 1:35Speaker 1: third entrant. Now, there's nothing wrong with an e WE
- 1:38Speaker 1: lead supermarket chain. There's nothing wrong with a third chain
- 1:40Speaker 1: at all. Help We would all like to see that,
- 1:43Speaker 1: But do we want it to be taxpayers supported? That's
- 1:46Speaker 1: the question. If private capital can't make it work at
- 1:49Speaker 1: these prices, what chances would the state have the problem
- 1:53Speaker 1: with this stuff is it feeds that perception and the
- 1:56Speaker 1: only response Labour has to anything is more money, more money.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Can we build anyone? There's a philosophical question here which
- 2:05Speaker 1: Hepkins needs to answer. But of course Hopkins isn't answering
- 2:08Speaker 1: in questions because he's got a ban on policy till
- 2:11Speaker 1: at least Christmas. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
