Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 0:08Speaker 1: I'm Sean de Weird, and I'm justin. Let me thank
- 0:11Speaker 1: you for being here.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Good to see you justin. I hear you're out last
- 0:14Speaker 2: week having fun.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Fun.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Yeah you want to call that fun? A d DOOS
- 0:22Speaker 2: attack on my network? Yeah, that's not fun.
- 0:25Speaker 1: So what is How does somebody know that they're getting
- 0:27Speaker 1: that because a lot of people have no clue. They
- 0:29Speaker 1: just the Internet slowed down or whatnot.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I mean that's kind of that. That's kind of how
- 0:35Speaker 2: it can be different, right. Well, no, I mean we
- 0:37Speaker 2: we that's pretty much how we found out. It was
- 0:39Speaker 2: just like everything was nobody could get to our website.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Some of our you know, enterprises just were having really
- 0:46Speaker 2: bad Internet connectivity. But I was showing everything was up,
- 0:51Speaker 2: but I also couldn't get to the website. So I
- 0:53Speaker 2: literally just had to reach out to the provider one.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I reached out to the the website for because we
- 1:00Speaker 2: don't host our own website, somebody else hosts it. And
- 1:03Speaker 2: They're like, oh, yeah, you guys are under a DDoS attack,
- 1:05Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh great, And then I reached out
- 1:08Speaker 2: to our internet service provider and they're like, yeah, you're
- 1:12Speaker 2: under a DDoS attack. And I'm like, okay, so this
- 1:15Speaker 2: is a multi front one, Like they're really going after us,
- 1:18Speaker 2: Like we must have really made somebody mad at water
- 1:21Speaker 2: World this year. I don't know, they crazy. Yeah, but no,
- 1:25Speaker 2: it went on for a couple of days. I mean
- 1:28Speaker 2: it it kind of like calmed down after a while.
- 1:30Speaker 2: They put some you know, they put some I don't
- 1:33Speaker 2: know what you want to call it, just some some
- 1:35Speaker 2: things in place to kind of mitigate the damage. But yeah, no,
- 1:41Speaker 2: it was not fun. Definitely not fun. But I'm here.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I worked for but I still worked for a company,
- 1:47Speaker 1: not this one, but that had a full attack. But
- 1:50Speaker 1: it was it was to the point where they got inside,
- 1:52Speaker 1: they got into the systems, they were able to destroy it,
- 1:56Speaker 1: basically ransom out.
- 1:57Speaker 2: It was just awful.
- 1:58Speaker 1: It's it took them moment almost three weeks to recover
- 2:01Speaker 1: from that. And you know, I remember I was talking
- 2:04Speaker 1: to somebody else and they said, well, what do you
- 2:06Speaker 1: do to protect that? And I said, you just got
- 2:10Speaker 1: to hope that nobody within the organization is click happy,
- 2:14Speaker 1: you know, no matter what companies can sit there and
- 2:16Speaker 1: try and try and give these courses and lessons. Don't
- 2:21Speaker 1: click everything you get because that's one thing could take
- 2:24Speaker 1: down I mean seriously, am I right? One thing could
- 2:26Speaker 1: take down an entire company. You're you're right when you
- 2:29Speaker 1: say that. However, a DDUS attack is different than just
- 2:33Speaker 1: getting malware or a virus on inside your network. What
- 2:39Speaker 1: you're kind of referencing there is, yes, somebody who doesn't
- 2:42Speaker 1: know what they're doing, clicking on something and they end
- 2:44Speaker 1: up installing some sort of malware or virus or even worse,
- 2:48Speaker 1: something like a like a crypto bot or something that
- 2:51Speaker 1: will you know, ransomware, ransomware. There you go, ransomware too.
- 2:57Speaker 1: This was different because this wasn't from the end side.
- 3:00Speaker 1: This was from the outside. And there's really no way
- 3:03Speaker 1: to tell where it comes from because it is a
- 3:08Speaker 1: d d OS. SODS stands for denial of service, the
- 3:13Speaker 1: other D in front of it. D d OS means
- 3:15Speaker 1: distributed denial of service, so it can really honestly come
- 3:19Speaker 1: from anywhere. We don't know where it originates. But this
- 3:21Speaker 1: is why people talk about these things like like Sean,
- 3:25Speaker 1: you're into the wisecams. I've got real link cameras. Andy
- 3:30Speaker 1: you might have a smart fridge or your printer. These
- 3:34Speaker 1: are all called the Internet of Things IoT. Now, a
- 3:37Speaker 1: lot of these devices, especially these cheap cameras like Whys
- 3:41Speaker 1: and and real Link and other things like that, they
- 3:45Speaker 1: don't nobody patches these things. They have security flaws inherent
- 3:50Speaker 1: in them. And also a.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Lot of people don't even don't even change the credentials.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I do get.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Firmware updates with WYSE because we have wise distributed, so
- 3:59Speaker 1: that that's.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Been good, I mean that is good.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yeah, but they've had their problems in the past, which and.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I'm not trying to I'm not trying to poop on
- 4:06Speaker 2: Whys here, I'm just saying I'm just giving them as example.
- 4:09Speaker 2: There's there's plenty of other companies.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Had their issues, remember people who were looking at other
- 4:13Speaker 1: people's cameras.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yeah, ring and but but it especially is damaging to
- 4:18Speaker 2: these really cheap internet connected devices that exploiters can take
- 4:26Speaker 2: control over really easily, and you'll never know. You'll never
- 4:30Speaker 2: know because your your printer, your camera, your smart speaker
- 4:35Speaker 2: could be a part of a bot network that is
- 4:39Speaker 2: just doing these DDoS attacks and so the only thing
- 4:43Speaker 2: that might notice it is, oh, hey, my Internet's a
- 4:46Speaker 2: little bit slower than it normally is. I wonder why
- 4:49Speaker 2: it must be the must be the ISP, they must
- 4:52Speaker 2: be having problems. No, it's because you have a handful
- 4:55Speaker 2: of devices on your network that are now attacking some
- 4:57Speaker 2: random person out there on the web and you have
- 5:00Speaker 2: no idea.
- 5:02Speaker 1: So your device could be being used, yes, to attack
- 5:05Speaker 1: somebody else. Yes, hackers can hack. Hackers definitely can can
- 5:10Speaker 1: get into these devices that are unsecured or at least
- 5:13Speaker 1: just don't have the default credentials. A lot of people,
- 5:15Speaker 1: you know, these devices are like their logins are like
- 5:18Speaker 1: admin admin or admin password or whatever, and people don't
- 5:23Speaker 1: change that. They don't think they need to, but they
- 5:26Speaker 1: really do. So if you have these devices that have
- 5:28Speaker 1: just default credentials to log into them, it is very
- 5:32Speaker 1: important that you do change those. And Andy to your point,
- 5:35Speaker 1: it's it's very important that you update your firmware because
- 5:38Speaker 1: it patches these holes. And some people they see a
- 5:40Speaker 1: firmware notice or they hear of one, and they, yeah,
- 5:43Speaker 1: I don't want to bother with it.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I don't want to go through all of that. Oh
- 5:46Speaker 2: I love it when I get a firmware notification, you do,
- 5:50Speaker 2: I love it. I love it. I get a firm
- 5:51Speaker 2: More notification, like, yeah, let's do it. Let's let's see
- 5:54Speaker 2: what new features. Let's let's read the release notes. Let's
- 5:57Speaker 2: find out what polls they patched. You know, like, I
- 6:00Speaker 2: love firm More updates. I'm always checking everything in my house.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I'm checking what devices out there have firm More updates.
- 6:06Speaker 2: You Ever, there's a couple of programs out there.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I know that you can actually do a sweep of
- 6:11Speaker 1: your home and find out devices that are on your network.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Some people like will do that and go wait, what
- 6:17Speaker 2: is this? They what are some of those things that
- 6:20Speaker 2: you're talking about? Like what what software? Do you know?
- 6:22Speaker 2: There is a software and fing do it fing f
- 6:27Speaker 2: I G.
- 6:28Speaker 3: It's a really if Yeah, it's a It's an app
- 6:30Speaker 3: that will do network monitoring. You can check for devices,
- 6:33Speaker 3: you can whitelist, blacklist. It'll notify you of new devices
- 6:38Speaker 3: that come on. It's a it's an iOS app. There's
- 6:41Speaker 3: a paid version for it, there's a free version. You
- 6:44Speaker 3: can do basic ping tests with it, speed tests those.
- 6:46Speaker 2: It's also a Windows app. It's not just iOS.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Yeah. I use it on iOS just because it helps
- 6:51Speaker 3: me monitor a couple things on my phone. But outside
- 6:55Speaker 3: of that, I mean, most routers have a common tool
- 6:57Speaker 3: that you can use to to to check for things
- 6:59Speaker 3: like that too, But outside of that, I don't know
- 7:01Speaker 3: of any other software.
- 7:02Speaker 2: That well, a lot of a lot of routers. You know,
- 7:04Speaker 2: a lot of people out there, they just use the
- 7:06Speaker 2: default router that was given to them by their ISP.
- 7:08Speaker 2: They just feel like, okay, that's enough, it's good enough.
- 7:11Speaker 2: The ISPs get those routers are the worst. I mean,
- 7:16Speaker 2: the ISP. They don't care as long as it connects
- 7:18Speaker 2: you to the Internet and you got Internet service and
- 7:21Speaker 2: you're paying for it. They don't care about your security.
- 7:24Speaker 3: And a handful of people that I you know, everybody knows.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I'm the guy that knows it. So they always call
- 7:31Speaker 3: me with their I problems and the number of people
- 7:34Speaker 3: that I've had gone over their house and they say,
- 7:37Speaker 3: my WiFi is garbage, like it's terrible upstairs. And they
- 7:41Speaker 3: don't realize that they took the router they were provided
- 7:44Speaker 3: by their ISP, set it up, plugged it into their
- 7:48Speaker 3: wireless router right next to it, and never disabled the
- 7:51Speaker 3: Wi Fi off the base router. Oh, so they're they're
- 7:55Speaker 3: connecting to their.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Router on the same frequency channel ye.
- 7:59Speaker 3: They're blasting each other and they're maybe fifteen twenty feet away.
- 8:03Speaker 3: It's fine, but you get upstairs, you get forty fifty
- 8:06Speaker 3: sixty feet away, and the Internet starts to get degraded
- 8:08Speaker 3: terribly because they're just they're just channel surfing all the
- 8:12Speaker 3: same channels, trying to figure it out.
- 8:14Speaker 2: That that is true. But there there there have been
- 8:17Speaker 2: improvements in wireless connectivity and a lot of routers. And
- 8:20Speaker 2: I'm not saying the ISPs do this because they're crap,
- 8:23Speaker 2: but if you have anything that's actually somewhat from this century,
- 8:28Speaker 2: they'll they'll they will they will monitor the channels that
- 8:31Speaker 2: are in use, and they will switch. If it determines
- 8:33Speaker 2: that a particular Wi Fi channel is overloaded or just
- 8:37Speaker 2: being used by a lot of devices, it will try
- 8:39Speaker 2: to find a channel that is not being used and
- 8:43Speaker 2: it will switch to that channel. But if the device reboots,
- 8:46Speaker 2: you know, your router reboots or whatever, it's gonna have
- 8:48Speaker 2: to do this all over again from scratch.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Now, some people have wondered, you know, with the network
- 8:54Speaker 1: and people could connect to the network, what about Bluetooth.
- 8:57Speaker 1: You know a lot of people have Bluetooth devices now
- 8:59Speaker 1: in their homes. Can Bluetooth devices actually be dangerous.
- 9:05Speaker 2: That you know, if you have them open.
- 9:07Speaker 1: I know that recently I did a test on a
- 9:10Speaker 1: new product that I looked at, the cell to jack device,
- 9:13Speaker 1: which is kind of cool.
- 9:15Speaker 2: I'll talk about that later. But I noticed I had
- 9:18Speaker 2: an Xi x yo available a Bluetooth device.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Obviously it would be an offshore company based in China
- 9:28Speaker 1: because that's basically what it was representing.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And then I had my neighbor who I know her name,
- 9:34Speaker 2: her Mac.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Was available via bluetooth, and that should I go over
- 9:38Speaker 1: there and say, hey, you might want to lock that
- 9:40Speaker 1: down or I mean, how how safe would how should
- 9:45Speaker 1: we worry about Bluetooth connections?
- 9:47Speaker 2: For the most part, Bluetooth it's it's a little bit
- 9:51Speaker 2: more secure than just regular old just Wi Fi. I
- 9:55Speaker 2: guess in a certain way, I know there's gonna be
- 9:56Speaker 2: a lot there to say, oh, no, you're wrong, justin no.
- 9:59Speaker 2: But like when you try to connect a Bluetooth device,
- 10:01Speaker 2: a lot of times the receiving end of it will say, hey,
- 10:05Speaker 2: so and so is trying to connect. Do you want
- 10:07Speaker 2: to pair you this device with this random thing? So
- 10:11Speaker 2: it'll at least try to give you a warning, But
- 10:14Speaker 2: that's not to say that it's not without fault. I'll
- 10:17Speaker 2: give you an example, and this is not necessarily Bluetooth.
- 10:20Speaker 2: This is a little bit more with Wi Fi, but
- 10:22Speaker 2: the concept remains the same. We have and I believe
- 10:26Speaker 2: I think I mentioned this on the show a year
- 10:29Speaker 2: ago or so, but my company runs a fitness center
- 10:32Speaker 2: and there's a lot of televisions in the fitness center,
- 10:36Speaker 2: and these televisions are smart televisions, and people would actually
- 10:40Speaker 2: bring their phones in and somebody decided, hey, let's just
- 10:43Speaker 2: see what happens if I try to cast my phone
- 10:46Speaker 2: to one of these TVs. And they were able to
- 10:49Speaker 2: cast their phone to the TV. So what they did
- 10:51Speaker 2: was any natural person would do, is they just started
- 10:55Speaker 2: to showing porn on on TVs. Oh my god, and
- 11:00Speaker 2: a fitness center. So we obviously had to, you know, disable.
- 11:03Speaker 2: But I'm just saying, is the point of the story,
- 11:05Speaker 2: the moral of the story is it's not necessarily secure.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I mean, you've got to be careful with what you're
- 11:11Speaker 2: doing these devices and hackers, they're going to find the easiest,
- 11:15Speaker 2: least path of resistance way of getting into your device,
- 11:19Speaker 2: and they're not going to stop until they do. And
- 11:21Speaker 2: that's why there are firmware updates. That's why their software updates.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Because companies, it's whack a mole. You're gonna patch one
- 11:27Speaker 2: or two holes and another two or three are gonna
- 11:29Speaker 2: pop up.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I'm wondering though, when it comes to routers, because I
- 11:33Speaker 1: know that we have people listening that may have been
- 11:35Speaker 1: in that same situation justin where they were using you know,
- 11:39Speaker 1: the router provided by the cable company, and you know
- 11:43Speaker 1: manufacturers that can vary. Is there a router manufacturer? I mean,
- 11:46Speaker 1: we have the big names, Netgear, Linksys, Is there some
- 11:50Speaker 1: that are better than others or that are highly regarded.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I know that you know, Abiquity, We've we've heard about them.
- 11:57Speaker 1: They seem to have, you know, a pretty good a
- 11:59Speaker 1: pretty good stronghold when it comes to companies. But what
- 12:02Speaker 1: about for the consumer, like when they're they're looking for
- 12:05Speaker 1: that type of device.
- 12:08Speaker 2: See, now here's the thing. I had an answer ready
- 12:10Speaker 2: to go for you, but the moment you just said consumer,
- 12:14Speaker 2: it went out the window. Yes, I mean obviously you
- 12:18Speaker 2: can buy I personally, I personally am running an Asus
- 12:21Speaker 2: router and it's off the shelf. Okay, I mean it's
- 12:24Speaker 2: a I think it was four hundred and fifty bucks.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Plus I added an extra Wi Fi extender upstairs that
- 12:31Speaker 2: connects to this. So yeah, four hundred, five hundred dollars
- 12:34Speaker 2: for that thing. However, if if you got a little
- 12:37Speaker 2: bit of it knowledge and a spare you know, small
- 12:42Speaker 2: PC laying around that doesn't have to be really powerful,
- 12:45Speaker 2: I would highly recommend PF sense. PF sense is an
- 12:49Speaker 2: open Yeah, PF Paul franksense dot org is the website.
- 12:55Speaker 2: PF sense amazing open source. Now when you see that,
- 12:59Speaker 2: we hear the word opens you're like, oh, well, well
- 13:01Speaker 2: hold on. Open source means anybody can contribute, anybody can
- 13:04Speaker 2: make it. Yeah, that's true. However, it goes through a
- 13:08Speaker 2: whole peer review before it ever gets approved, and there
- 13:11Speaker 2: are a lot of people out there that know a
- 13:13Speaker 2: lot more than I do, and they're gonna review every
- 13:16Speaker 2: type of every piece of code that gets introduced, and
- 13:21Speaker 2: they're gonna say, Okay, yeah this is good, or no,
- 13:24Speaker 2: this is not good. We're not going to allow this
- 13:26Speaker 2: to go through.
- 13:26Speaker 3: So happened.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah, PF sense is a great way to run an
- 13:30Speaker 2: open source doesn't cost you a dime, and it only
- 13:34Speaker 2: costs you hardware. And if you got an old PC
- 13:36Speaker 2: laying around, throw Linux on it and throw PF Sense
- 13:39Speaker 2: on it, and now you've got your own home router.
- 13:42Speaker 2: And uh, it's great, but it does require a little
- 13:44Speaker 2: bit of it knowledge. John, do you have like a
- 13:47Speaker 2: preference when it comes to routers?
- 13:48Speaker 3: And so I've always been privy to Netgear, it seems
- 13:55Speaker 3: to just over the years, Netgear's kind of been always
- 13:57Speaker 3: one I've landed on, whether it was provided for me
- 14:00Speaker 3: at my apartment or one that I bought. I'm running
- 14:03Speaker 3: a Nighthawk here, which is their They're kind of their
- 14:07Speaker 3: top of the line for consumer before you start getting
- 14:10Speaker 3: into enterprise level stuff from Netgear. And we used Netgear Grades,
- 14:15Speaker 3: which is a professional uh you know, Layer three S,
- 14:19Speaker 3: which is at we're at at the university for certain things.
- 14:22Speaker 3: So Netgear's kind of been the router of choice for me.
- 14:27Speaker 3: And I would have said PF Sense if Justin hadn't
- 14:30Speaker 3: said it first. It's just I don't know much about it.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I know it exists. It's something that I've thought about
- 14:36Speaker 3: playing around with, but outside of the generic security rules
- 14:42Speaker 3: in place and my Windows Defender, like, I'm not running
- 14:44Speaker 3: much more security than that.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Now, if you were a talk to Matt. Now, I
- 14:47Speaker 2: know Matt's not here tonight. Actually, Matt just was traveling
- 14:51Speaker 2: back from Washington, d C. He went out there for
- 14:54Speaker 2: the Washington Commanders versus the Raiders game. He was a
- 14:57Speaker 2: big Raiders fan, and I was like, why would you
- 15:00Speaker 2: do that to yourself? First off, why would you travel
- 15:02Speaker 2: oh halfway across the country just to see the Raiders lose.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I'm sorry, I'm a Raiders hater, and he's not here
- 15:09Speaker 2: to defend himself. But anyway, if Matt was here tonight,
- 15:12Speaker 2: he would tell you that he likes Ubiquity Unify. He's
- 15:16Speaker 2: a big Unify guy. So that's another great one. But
- 15:19Speaker 2: to Shawn's point, Unify can be just dabbling your toes
- 15:24Speaker 2: into the enterprise side of things. I remember when my
- 15:28Speaker 2: wife started a billing business. She did a medical building
- 15:31Speaker 2: from home back around two thousand and nine. We use
- 15:33Speaker 2: Sonic Wall and they were always pushing. They were always
- 15:37Speaker 2: pushing updates. It was good. Never had an issue with
- 15:39Speaker 2: him until the router just just died. What happened. I've
- 15:46Speaker 2: heard mixed reactions about Sonic Wall. I've heard that Sonic
- 15:49Speaker 2: Wall for what you get, I mean, they do protect
- 15:52Speaker 2: you but they also constantly are trying to push you
- 15:55Speaker 2: to pay more money for this subscription or you know,
- 15:58Speaker 2: add on this feature for an extra five dollars a
- 16:01Speaker 2: month or whatever. And so I don't like that, that
- 16:04Speaker 2: that model of business.
- 16:05Speaker 1: All right, So when it comes to that, I use
- 16:09Speaker 1: neckar Modem, Lynxis routers.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I've been using Lynxis for a long time, and I've.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Upgraded holped You've changed your password, yeah, of course, oh yeah,
- 16:20Speaker 1: always I that's kind of a common thing. But yeah,
- 16:23Speaker 1: that's the problem is some of them are a little
- 16:26Speaker 1: looser than others when it comes to the security that's
- 16:28Speaker 1: on there. And again another reason. Run the firmware updates.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Now I'm wondering, what about firmware updates on motherboards, bios updates, Yeah,
- 16:37Speaker 1: bios updates and doing those. Some people don't ever do those.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I do them all the time because I look at
- 16:44Speaker 1: it this way. We've got so many computers and Seawan
- 16:47Speaker 1: you can probably speak to this at Notre Dame, but
- 16:48Speaker 1: at Highland Hills. I mean, we got so many Dell
- 16:50Speaker 1: computers and they're all running Windows right, and Windows updates things,
- 16:55Speaker 1: you know, every every Tuesday.
- 16:56Speaker 2: They got patch Tuesday, right. Sometimes it's it's benign. So
- 17:00Speaker 2: times it's a big patch. But what happens is is
- 17:03Speaker 2: when Windows updates things faster than the manufacturer of the
- 17:07Speaker 2: hardware can keep up with, then they have to issue
- 17:10Speaker 2: like a BIOS update. And I've noticed so many times
- 17:12Speaker 2: where a brand new Windows eleven Pro PC, top of
- 17:18Speaker 2: the line Dell Precision just stops working and it's running slow,
- 17:24Speaker 2: and I'm like, this doesn't make any sense. It's brand new.
- 17:28Speaker 2: And then I go out and I find oh, there's
- 17:30Speaker 2: a bios update, and I run the bios update and bam,
- 17:33Speaker 2: everything's working great again.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yeah, so you mentioned this on the show a couple
- 17:38Speaker 3: weeks ago, and you know me, Yeah you did? You
- 17:42Speaker 3: meant justin, Yeah, Justin, you mentioned this on the show
- 17:44Speaker 3: a couple weeks ago. We were having a problem with
- 17:47Speaker 3: PC at work. It's a Lenovo Think Center running to
- 17:51Speaker 3: dual thread rippers. We're using it for video transcoding and
- 17:55Speaker 3: it's running, it's running the it's ridiculous Windows eleven server.
- 17:59Speaker 3: It's it's this big beefe machine and it just kept struggling,
- 18:05Speaker 3: kept struggling. We kept updating Windows and break things, kept
- 18:08Speaker 3: breaking things. We put driver easy on it.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Oh, I love Yeah Easy.
- 18:14Speaker 3: It found all these drivers that weren't updated.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I don't get it.
- 18:19Speaker 3: I don't I just don't get it.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Why why would Yeah, why show you this stuff?
- 18:24Speaker 3: I don't know. So it found it found like fifteen
- 18:26Speaker 3: or sixteen drivers that were like, I'm out of date,
- 18:29Speaker 3: and we installed them, rebooted, and it's been fine.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Did you do that Driver Easy because you were like, hey,
- 18:36Speaker 2: justin talked to him.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Well, it just we were like every time it would
- 18:40Speaker 3: do a Windows update because we update. You know, we
- 18:42Speaker 3: have a guy on our team that his whole job
- 18:44Speaker 3: is security and Windows and stuff like that, and.
- 18:46Speaker 2: He didn't know about Driver Easy.
- 18:48Speaker 3: I just told him. I was like, look, it's probably
- 18:50Speaker 3: a driver. Let's let's get an enterprise license for Driver Easy.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Let's put it on there. Let's see what happens. The
- 18:56Speaker 3: worst thing we can do is update the drivers, right,
- 18:58Speaker 3: and we updated the driver and it must have found
- 19:02Speaker 3: one that was stuck or hadn't been updated driver and
- 19:07Speaker 3: it's been weren't running great.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Since No, what's the cost of driver Easy for somebody
- 19:12Speaker 2: to use?
- 19:13Speaker 3: I mean for an enterprise level. I don't know because
- 19:15Speaker 3: I'm not paying for that. But I have the three
- 19:18Speaker 3: I could put it on three PCs of my own
- 19:20Speaker 3: and I think I paid like sixty sixty bucks for
- 19:23Speaker 3: the year.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, fifty sixty bucks a year.
- 19:25Speaker 3: So it's been great, and it's it's helped me. It
- 19:28Speaker 3: helped my machine. It's helped me on another machine that
- 19:31Speaker 3: I have at home that I was struggling with after
- 19:33Speaker 3: a Windows update where things were just dog slow and
- 19:35Speaker 3: I was just like, why is this so slow? Driver Easy?
- 19:38Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Justin Menston on the.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Show, I bought it that night that night ran down
- 19:42Speaker 3: my PC.
- 19:43Speaker 2: While we were doing the show. Yeah, you were online
- 19:45Speaker 2: buying it. Yeah. And then remember remember he disconnected because
- 19:48Speaker 2: AD updated his driver and made him reboot like halfway
- 19:50Speaker 2: through the show. Yes, no, but no, there also is
- 19:54Speaker 2: a different version of Driver Easy. It's it's I think
- 19:57Speaker 2: it's called like the PC help Desk Technician license. Basically,
- 20:01Speaker 2: what it does is you get fifty licenses for driver Easy,
- 20:05Speaker 2: but each license is only active for three days. So
- 20:09Speaker 2: this is it allows a PC technician to install Driver
- 20:14Speaker 2: Easy on a customer's computer, run the updates once, get
- 20:19Speaker 2: it all updated, and be like, hey, look your computer's
- 20:21Speaker 2: working great. I would recommend getting a subscription to this
- 20:25Speaker 2: software that I just installed in your PC. So that's
- 20:28Speaker 2: what we do. We have we don't need. I mean,
- 20:31Speaker 2: we've got, oh gosh, I want to say, probably close
- 20:35Speaker 2: to two hundred and fifty PCs in our organization. I
- 20:38Speaker 2: can't afford to run driver easy constantly on those PCs,
- 20:42Speaker 2: so I buy fifty licenses a year, and I don't
- 20:46Speaker 2: know remember how much that is, maybe maybe three four hundred,
- 20:49Speaker 2: five hundred dollars maybe, But it allows me anytime I
- 20:52Speaker 2: need it, I can just put the license key in,
- 20:55Speaker 2: it'll activate, take one of my licenses away, and it
- 20:58Speaker 2: gives me three days to update all the drivers on
- 21:01Speaker 2: that particular PC and then it deactivates itself. Nice. That's
- 21:05Speaker 2: not bad. And I haven't used it yet.
- 21:07Speaker 1: I've got a machine that's being a little testy. It
- 21:10Speaker 1: won't let me look at my system, hardware, the type
- 21:12Speaker 1: of board and everything else. I'm thinking, man, maybe maybe
- 21:15Speaker 1: it just needs a driver fix. And driver easy also
- 21:19Speaker 1: does bios too.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing I'm wondering.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Because some manufactures of boards, whether it be Asues, you know, Gigabit, whatever, Gigabyte,
- 21:27Speaker 1: they don't put out they don't always release the drivers
- 21:31Speaker 1: or make it easy for them to find. That's what
- 21:33Speaker 1: I love All driver Easy is it. Somehow it has
- 21:36Speaker 1: this magical database of every single component in the world,
- 21:41Speaker 1: and it knows exactly where to go to find the
- 21:44Speaker 1: drivers because it scans.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Your hardware when you when you start it right, it's like, oh,
- 21:47Speaker 3: you're running this a sus rog whatever. And then it goes, okay,
- 21:52Speaker 3: here's the fifty drivers for your brotherboard chipset. You know well,
- 21:57Speaker 3: I almost said northward to Southbridge where that it's all
- 21:59Speaker 3: contained on the gpun the CPU. But it finds all
- 22:03Speaker 3: these drivers and it's like, you've got seventeen drivers out
- 22:06Speaker 3: of date out of fifty. It's like, yeah, I didn't
- 22:09Speaker 3: even know that.
- 22:10Speaker 2: And it even actually finds devices that aren't currently connected
- 22:13Speaker 2: to your computer. It'll find printers. It'll say, hey, this
- 22:16Speaker 2: printer is installed on your computer, but it's not active
- 22:20Speaker 2: right now, like it might be turned off, but hey,
- 22:22Speaker 2: here's a new driver for it. Next time it turns
- 22:24Speaker 2: itself on and your computer connects will have the updated
- 22:27Speaker 2: driver installed. Oh wow, that's pretty amazing. And where does
- 22:31Speaker 2: somebody find this?
- 22:31Speaker 3: One?
- 22:32Speaker 2: Driver easy dot com?
- 22:34Speaker 3: All right right now, if you go I just should
- 22:36Speaker 3: to the website twenty nine ninety five for the year
- 22:39Speaker 3: for three piece eas if you buy it. Oh my gosh,
- 22:41Speaker 3: that's the deal. It's the deal I have on the
- 22:43Speaker 3: web page right now.
- 22:44Speaker 2: So for three that's pretty good for a whole year.
- 22:47Speaker 2: That's amazing when it comes.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Okay, So when it came comes to tools that you
- 22:51Speaker 1: want to have on your computer, obviously driver easy is
- 22:54Speaker 1: going to be one of them.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Well, number one, number one on the list. What would
- 22:58Speaker 2: be another one that you would like?
- 23:00Speaker 3: Bytes?
- 23:01Speaker 2: Yeah, VLC, media player, share X.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Which is what I use for screenshots and cropping and
- 23:07Speaker 3: things like that.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Share X is that better Windows snipping? Oh yeah, really?
- 23:11Speaker 3: Some leaves and bounds better?
- 23:13Speaker 2: Wait? Share How do you run it?
- 23:16Speaker 1: Then?
- 23:16Speaker 2: What makes it?
- 23:17Speaker 3: You just click on it and then it gives you
- 23:18Speaker 3: it's it's if you're familiar with the Mac UI, you
- 23:21Speaker 3: can set up hot key so like out of Mac
- 23:24Speaker 3: if you do command shift three, it's gonna give you
- 23:27Speaker 3: the full screen. Command shift four will give you a
- 23:29Speaker 3: region and clipping tool. You can set up hot keys.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Can you bind it to print screen so I just
- 23:34Speaker 2: have to hit print screen and the can Because I
- 23:37Speaker 2: have a problem my new computer.
- 23:39Speaker 3: I don't like the way.
- 23:40Speaker 2: I don't know if it's a Windows update or if
- 23:42Speaker 2: it's something with my hardware. But I used to be
- 23:44Speaker 2: where I would hit print screen, it would open up
- 23:46Speaker 2: Windows Snipping Tool and allow me to select what I wanted,
- 23:50Speaker 2: and once I would take a screen shot, it would
- 23:52Speaker 2: show up in the lower right corner and say, here's
- 23:54Speaker 2: your most recent screenshot, and you know, i'd click on
- 23:56Speaker 2: it and when I get edited. But now it won't
- 23:59Speaker 2: do that. It just sends it straight to the gallery.
- 24:01Speaker 2: It won't even let me. I have to open up
- 24:03Speaker 2: another folder go find the image that I just took.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Like it's so annoying.
- 24:08Speaker 3: So at one point, at one point you clicked you
- 24:11Speaker 3: at one point when you did a screenshot, you clicked
- 24:14Speaker 3: on the notification menu and said, don't show me any
- 24:17Speaker 3: more notifications from this. And that's the only way I
- 24:20Speaker 3: know it's a It's a desktop notification. So if you
- 24:23Speaker 3: have desktop notifications silence or turned off or not to
- 24:27Speaker 3: be shown, that's what that's where it shows up. It's
- 24:31Speaker 3: a snipping tool that the Windows Snipping tool. If you
- 24:34Speaker 3: do Windows Shift s to do the snipping tool, Yeah,
- 24:37Speaker 3: if you have the notifications turned off for it, it
- 24:39Speaker 3: will not show it to you, and it'll just jump
- 24:41Speaker 3: into the screenshots fold.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Okay, so how do I change that? If that happens?
- 24:44Speaker 2: How do I how do I get those notifications back?
- 24:46Speaker 1: Right?
- 24:47Speaker 3: So let's do a Windows shift S. I'm not sure
- 24:50Speaker 3: I'd have to look at it, but yeah, I.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Can't even in the there's probably a section in the
- 24:56Speaker 1: control panel or where you could actually go into your sea.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Notifications and actions if I just hit Windows and type
- 25:02Speaker 2: of notifications and actions. Right, Okay, yeah, it looks like
- 25:05Speaker 2: I have to just go yep, I see I can
- 25:07Speaker 2: go out here and yeah, Windows snipping this particular computer
- 25:10Speaker 2: I'm on right now, it's turned on, but other I
- 25:13Speaker 2: bet you my other computer is probably turned off.
- 25:15Speaker 3: It probably is. Yeah, you go, because I use that
- 25:17Speaker 3: all the time for snipping stuff too, Like if I'm
- 25:18Speaker 3: on a PC, if I don't have shirt like a
- 25:20Speaker 3: work PC, I can install stuff. So it's like right,
- 25:22Speaker 3: Windows shift S, dragon box, it goes to the screenshots filter.
- 25:25Speaker 3: I use it all the time for updating my technical
- 25:27Speaker 3: books and stuff with information.
- 25:29Speaker 1: So we got to take a break. We come back
- 25:30Speaker 1: with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm
- 25:33Speaker 1: sean to weird and I'm justin Lemmy. And remember Andy's
- 25:36Speaker 1: password to his his Linux or his links. This is
- 25:39Speaker 1: password one, two, three four. We'll be right back seven eight, Yeah, yeah, we'll.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Be right back. Now back to tech talk Radio.
- 25:48Speaker 1: I'm will enjoy listening to your show. It's really cool.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Well, thank you, very informative.
- 25:53Speaker 3: A rookie. Are you a rookie?
- 25:55Speaker 1: I'm killing much a rookie. Welcome back to tech talk radio. Okay,
- 25:59Speaker 1: I've got a we got a listener question in for
- 26:02Speaker 1: uh for you guys.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Actually, this is good.
- 26:04Speaker 1: This is really focused at Justin and Sean. Hey, guys,
- 26:09Speaker 1: love the show. I listened as much as I can.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I find the humor in your show exhilarating and the
- 26:16Speaker 1: knowledge is beyond me.
- 26:18Speaker 2: I just think it's amazing. But now us, yeah, that's
- 26:21Speaker 2: saying about you.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Sure this is the right show, and it says it
- 26:24Speaker 1: goes on to say so recently listen to your show
- 26:28Speaker 1: and decided that I needed to upgrade my computer to
- 26:30Speaker 1: a Windows eleven system. However, I'm at a quandary. Do
- 26:34Speaker 1: I go Windows eleven Home or Windows eleven Pro? How
- 26:39Speaker 1: can I determine which would be the best Andy in
- 26:43Speaker 1: Green Valley.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Well, that's actually a really really simple question. That's actually
- 26:47Speaker 2: me asking you the question. That's you, that's you, that's
- 26:50Speaker 2: the okay, Well, I mean, are you in an enterprise situation?
- 26:53Speaker 2: Do you need to be on a domain, like an
- 26:56Speaker 2: actual domain, log in credential or if this is just
- 27:01Speaker 2: a simple home computer, there's your answer. It prow is
- 27:05Speaker 2: for companies, pros for companies. All right, Yeah, if you're
- 27:09Speaker 2: just running this on a home computer, just get Windows
- 27:11Speaker 2: eleven Home. There's no reason to go pro, right, Sean,
- 27:15Speaker 2: what do you think?
- 27:16Speaker 3: So I've ran into this a little bit. I upgraded,
- 27:20Speaker 3: so I got a couple of surp post computers work
- 27:24Speaker 3: that I was able to put Windows eleven on. Bought
- 27:26Speaker 3: Windows eleven Home. Okay, I like to have my computer's headless,
- 27:31Speaker 3: meaning no monitors attached to them if I'm doing something
- 27:33Speaker 3: for fun, like a server or a project. Right. So
- 27:36Speaker 3: it's all went from Windows ten, set it all up,
- 27:38Speaker 3: had it was running Windows ten, built it all. I
- 27:40Speaker 3: was like I want it. We're on Windows eleven, so
- 27:43Speaker 3: I upgraded it to Windows eleven Home. There is one
- 27:49Speaker 3: glaring feature that does not exist in Windows eleven Home.
- 27:54Speaker 3: What is that remote desktop?
- 27:56Speaker 2: Oh? That's right.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Yeah, you do not get remote desktop up with Windows
- 28:00Speaker 3: eleven Home.
- 28:01Speaker 2: You can't even install it as part of the administrative tool.
- 28:04Speaker 3: You might be able to, but I was so peeved.
- 28:06Speaker 3: I just paid for a Windows eleven prolysis because I
- 28:09Speaker 3: was so mad. Because I was trying. I had to
- 28:11Speaker 3: go get a monitor and to keyboard a mouse, walk
- 28:15Speaker 3: my happy butt over to the computer across the room. Yeah,
- 28:18Speaker 3: it's just a cross the room, but plug it in.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Get such first world problems, right, But I have it
- 28:23Speaker 2: set up.
- 28:23Speaker 3: With I used RUSS desk, right, so remote desktopping into
- 28:26Speaker 3: some things. But I was using remote desktop at the
- 28:29Speaker 3: time and it just wasn't working. I was like, why
- 28:31Speaker 3: isn't it working, couldn't figure it out, couln't figure it out,
- 28:33Speaker 3: did a little bit of Google food figured out yep. Sorry,
- 28:37Speaker 3: it was free with Windows ten, but with Windows eleven
- 28:40Speaker 3: Home it just doesn't exist.
- 28:43Speaker 1: The reason I asked that, And that's good. That's something
- 28:47Speaker 1: to consider too. So I based on last week's show
- 28:51Speaker 1: Justin and You were Out. We were talking about ed
- 28:53Speaker 1: Bot's article on cd net talking about making that upgrade
- 28:57Speaker 1: from Windows.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Ten to Windows eleven, and you know, everybody's talking about it.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Most people are saying you could do this, and they're
- 29:04Speaker 1: pushing it towards the one drive, you know, letting it
- 29:07Speaker 1: assume a one drive on your system, and then you
- 29:10Speaker 1: know they'll let you do it for a year or paying.
- 29:13Speaker 1: One figure was thirty dollars, and Sean went over the
- 29:16Speaker 1: business figures, which is a bit higher, almost double that.
- 29:20Speaker 1: So I thought, you know what he's meant talking about Rufus.
- 29:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna go ahead and give it a shot. The
- 29:26Speaker 1: processor was one generation below what I needed, so I thought,
- 29:31Speaker 1: you know, I'm going to give this Rufus a try.
- 29:33Speaker 1: So put Rufus onto a flash drive. I cannot believe
- 29:37Speaker 1: how easy it was. Downloaded Windows eleven Home because this
- 29:42Speaker 1: is what I had on here was Windows ten Home.
- 29:45Speaker 2: And installed it and it installed.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Now I did the I did the full erase that
- 29:53Speaker 1: didn't there was nothing on the system I really needed
- 29:55Speaker 1: to keep. So I went ahead and let it rebooted,
- 29:58Speaker 1: you know, re you know, reformatted the drives, did all
- 30:01Speaker 1: of that. I'd do a couple of steps of that.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Once I got it running and everything, I was like, wow,
- 30:05Speaker 1: it actually is running. It evaded the two TPM two
- 30:08Speaker 1: point zero didn't mind the processor not being and you
- 30:11Speaker 1: have to select a couple of settings in there to
- 30:14Speaker 1: make it happen. I do understand there is an install
- 30:17Speaker 1: in place that you can do with rufus, which I
- 30:21Speaker 1: may try again, because the reason is so once I
- 30:24Speaker 1: got the Windows eleven Home installed, I had activation issues,
- 30:29Speaker 1: and it was because I didn't have a license, I
- 30:32Speaker 1: didn't pay for it.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I was trying to do the upgrade, couldn't do it.
- 30:37Speaker 1: After logging into Microsoft's website and going through just a
- 30:41Speaker 1: whole bunch of stuff, finally the I got the activation
- 30:45Speaker 1: and it's fine. But in the meantime I was a
- 30:47Speaker 1: little frustrated, and I thought, well, why didn't I try
- 30:49Speaker 1: Windows eleven Pro and just go that route? So I
- 30:52Speaker 1: bought a license, a group group on license, and I
- 30:55Speaker 1: went ahead, and I have a Windows eleven Pro license
- 30:58Speaker 1: that I got for like twelve bucks. I'm just thinking, oh,
- 31:01Speaker 1: should I go ahead and just blow it out and
- 31:03Speaker 1: put pro on? Or really, at this point, it doesn't matter.
- 31:06Speaker 1: It's working, it's installed.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I mean, if it's ain't broke, don't fix it. Yeah, Sean,
- 31:13Speaker 2: wait how much.
- 31:14Speaker 3: You want to fight it? I mean, yeah, you can
- 31:17Speaker 3: get relatively and expensive keys out there now. Yeah, I
- 31:21Speaker 3: won't tell you where to get them, but you can
- 31:23Speaker 3: google it.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Well, I mean I bought I bought mine legally from
- 31:27Speaker 1: group on it like again, thirteen bucks for Windows eleven Pro,
- 31:32Speaker 1: and I came with a license the whole bit.
- 31:33Speaker 2: I just haven't installed it. Well, I mean, can't you.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I think you can just upgrade to Windows eleven because
- 31:43Speaker 2: Windows eleven Home and Windows eleven Pro literally are the
- 31:46Speaker 2: same code. It's just Windows eleven Pro on it just
- 31:51Speaker 2: bit locker, yeah, BitLocker, but it basically has all the
- 31:54Speaker 2: features already built in. It's just they're disabled because you
- 31:57Speaker 2: don't have the license to use it. So by just
- 32:00Speaker 2: simply entering the key for Windows eleven Pro, it should
- 32:03Speaker 2: just simply unlock the rest of those features.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Right then I wouldn't have to do the whole brigamarole again, Yeah,
- 32:10Speaker 1: you should know.
- 32:11Speaker 3: You shouldn't have to write. So when I did mine, right,
- 32:13Speaker 3: I went from ten to eleven Home and they just
- 32:17Speaker 3: did the up there's an upgrade path you can just
- 32:19Speaker 3: do to Windows eleven Pro.
- 32:20Speaker 1: So right, well, if anybody, if anybody's going to do this,
- 32:25Speaker 1: they should definitely do do the upgrade in place, right,
- 32:29Speaker 1: I mean, but you like to reinstall everything, Sean, You've
- 32:32Speaker 1: talked about this before.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Call me crazy, but probably once every year or just
- 32:41Speaker 3: a little bit more, I wipe my machine. I just
- 32:45Speaker 3: get it fresh. Like everybody says, oh my gosh, why
- 32:48Speaker 3: do you do that, it's so crazy. It's a bit
- 32:50Speaker 3: like once a year probably, if not maybe a little
- 32:54Speaker 3: bit longer than that.
- 32:54Speaker 2: But I would love to have that kind of spare time.
- 32:59Speaker 2: I will do it.
- 33:00Speaker 3: I just back everything up, save things that I want,
- 33:03Speaker 3: and it helps me get rid of junk that I
- 33:05Speaker 3: don't want, programs I don't need, oh archive stuff, you know.
- 33:09Speaker 2: I can't.
- 33:11Speaker 1: I have one machine shown I can't do that with
- 33:13Speaker 1: because I have my Adobe CS five suite, which you
- 33:17Speaker 1: cannot get reauthenticated. I'm afraid if I delete it and
- 33:21Speaker 1: try it and to install Windows eleven and the program
- 33:24Speaker 1: on the same machine, I'm going to be out of luck,
- 33:26Speaker 1: you know. And I want to take one version, you know,
- 33:29Speaker 1: at least have Adobe Edition on there. And it's uh,
- 33:33Speaker 1: it's that's kind of a drag on that part. I've
- 33:35Speaker 1: tried using you know, PC, you know what is it?
- 33:38Speaker 1: Not PC anywhere PC mover tried using u z z install.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Aning is what it is that that one done well.
- 33:46Speaker 2: You also did a chronus right with true image. I
- 33:49Speaker 2: mean that takes a whole.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that might back up, right, that might work. But
- 33:53Speaker 1: here's part of the problem too. The boot sector on
- 33:57Speaker 1: the Windows ten machine is different. It's not a GPT
- 34:01Speaker 1: boot sector, it's NBR. So I think I run into
- 34:03Speaker 1: problems with that. So I've tried to just popping.
- 34:05Speaker 3: Oh, you definitely definitely will yeah, I I mean with
- 34:08Speaker 3: a with one of our uh switch, our computers at work.
- 34:13Speaker 3: I tried to upgrade to I tried to update to
- 34:16Speaker 3: Windows eleven, and because it was the whole NBR GPT
- 34:21Speaker 3: or whatever, it brecked the bios when I put in
- 34:25Speaker 3: when I turned down secure boot on the on the motherboard,
- 34:28Speaker 3: it saw that there was an NBR driving there and
- 34:30Speaker 3: it went uh. Then I had Then I had to
- 34:34Speaker 3: buy the clip and reflashed the firmware, and it was
- 34:38Speaker 3: kind of scary because I thought it was going to
- 34:41Speaker 3: be dead. We had to buy a new one, which
- 34:42Speaker 3: is not cheap in my business. And thankfully, the the
- 34:48Speaker 3: new firmware flashed in just fine and we're back up
- 34:51Speaker 3: and running. But the whole secure boot thing can is
- 34:57Speaker 3: Windows eleven Secureboot TPM two point zero. Really, it's kind
- 35:01Speaker 3: of a thorn in the side for the consumers because
- 35:04Speaker 3: it just starts to hicc up these little things that
- 35:08Speaker 3: cause frustration, and when consumers get frustrated, they just out
- 35:14Speaker 3: the window. Good money on a new one. So some
- 35:17Speaker 3: of these are by design, some of them are are frustrating.
- 35:24Speaker 3: But if you're a little bit tech savvy, you can
- 35:27Speaker 3: get around some of these. But the average the average
- 35:30Speaker 3: consumer is just gonna get so furious that they're probably
- 35:35Speaker 3: just gonna say, wow, I just got to go buy
- 35:37Speaker 3: a new one because this piece of crimes obsolete.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Justin was mentioning something earlier Justin when we were just
- 35:43Speaker 1: starting the show that you know, you don't go down
- 35:46Speaker 1: into you know, your area very much anymore. You know,
- 35:50Speaker 1: which is a desktop computer, great screen? You're on the
- 35:54Speaker 1: laptop a lot. I have been listening to people saying
- 35:58Speaker 1: that they're ditching their desktops with this move to Windows
- 36:01Speaker 1: eleven and just getting a Windows eleven desktop and just
- 36:04Speaker 1: going that way, just just ditching the desktop.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Maybe you may get in a Windows eleven laptop.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Yeah, getting a laptop, but ditching the Windows ten desktop
- 36:13Speaker 1: or even you know, yeah, we're just getting rid of that.
- 36:17Speaker 1: And that's actually not a bad idea really for many
- 36:19Speaker 1: people because they're finding they're able to do this all
- 36:22Speaker 1: most of the stuff that they need on a laptop
- 36:24Speaker 1: now sometimes you know, twice the power of that previous
- 36:27Speaker 1: desktop they had.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Well, I mean, as you get better battery life, I mean,
- 36:33Speaker 3: that's what it's always come down to, right, it is,
- 36:35Speaker 3: like everybody wanted to be portable. So when you had
- 36:38Speaker 3: these honking Intel penny and four machines with twenty five
- 36:44Speaker 3: minutes of battery life, it was not a benefit. Right,
- 36:48Speaker 3: So now what people need and the performance increase and
- 36:53Speaker 3: the power increases, especially with the newer Intel generations and
- 36:56Speaker 3: the AMD where the AMD stuff is coming. And then
- 37:00Speaker 3: on the Mac side with the M chips and the
- 37:02Speaker 3: M four pro, like you're getting all this processing power
- 37:06Speaker 3: out there that could run all these apps, the same
- 37:08Speaker 3: apps you were beholden to a desktop four. Now you
- 37:13Speaker 3: can edit on an iPad, you can edit on your MacBook,
- 37:17Speaker 3: you can edit on a laptop with DaVinci Resolve, and
- 37:19Speaker 3: it's in with it with good battery life. Right, So
- 37:22Speaker 3: big portable in a lot of high high performance settings
- 37:27Speaker 3: is appealing to a lot of people. And I think
- 37:29Speaker 3: that Windows eleven has optimized it for battery life, and
- 37:33Speaker 3: you're seeing a lot more long term solutions for productivity
- 37:38Speaker 3: at a higher performance level.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Well, it's not only it's not even just Windows eleven
- 37:43Speaker 2: doing that. I mean, it's also the advancements in processing.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Oh and the GPU.
- 37:49Speaker 1: All right, we're got to take another quick break. We
- 37:51Speaker 1: come back with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 37:54Speaker 1: I'm sean to Weird and I'm justin.
- 37:56Speaker 2: Let me send us an X at tech talk Radio.
- 37:58Speaker 2: We'll be right back and now back to tech talk Radio.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Hey, good by the science guy here. Whatever.
- 38:07Speaker 2: I am listening to the radio, especially tech talk Radio.
- 38:12Speaker 3: Adi and I talked a little bit last week about
- 38:16Speaker 3: whether or not DJI had anything new from drones. Yeah,
- 38:20Speaker 3: we literally said it's been been quite a quiet well
- 38:24Speaker 3: in the last week they announced their new DGI Mini
- 38:28Speaker 3: five Pro. So they have a new it's the newest
- 38:32Speaker 3: of their fleet. It's the DGI Mini five Pro and
- 38:37Speaker 3: the Mavick four Pro HU. So again, DGI is still
- 38:41Speaker 3: in the business. Right, we know that there was all
- 38:43Speaker 3: this legislation which still is kind of up in the
- 38:45Speaker 3: air with everything else that's going on. And so the
- 38:50Speaker 3: DGIF the Mini five pro is this is the way
- 38:56Speaker 3: it has listed on their website. Twenty and forty nine
- 38:59Speaker 3: point nine grams plus or minus four grams, meaning you
- 39:05Speaker 3: may or may not be over the weight limit if
- 39:07Speaker 3: you put an SD card in it or not.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Oh no, you're kidding.
- 39:11Speaker 3: So the regular the regulatory stuff in the US is
- 39:16Speaker 3: two hundred and fifty grams or less. You don't have
- 39:19Speaker 3: to register it. Above hundred and fifty grams, you do,
- 39:23Speaker 3: so that's zero point five to five pounds, right, So
- 39:27Speaker 3: this is this is their way of skirting, very very
- 39:30Speaker 3: slightly skirting the rules. Like here it is empty. It's
- 39:33Speaker 3: like if you get a car that weighs two hundred
- 39:35Speaker 3: pounds and you fill with gas, then you're over the
- 39:38Speaker 3: limit kind of a thing, right, It's like if you
- 39:39Speaker 3: put an SD card in it, you may or may
- 39:41Speaker 3: not be over the weight limit. One inch one inch
- 39:45Speaker 3: c MOSS sensor which can pull fifty megapixel stills, four
- 39:49Speaker 3: K one twenty ten bit d LOG which is colored
- 39:54Speaker 3: for cinema people's the colored grading, and fourteen stops the
- 39:56Speaker 3: dynamic range three out you know your your typical three
- 40:01Speaker 3: access gimble stuff. It's looks pretty cool. The Mavic four
- 40:08Speaker 3: is running the new we talked about this last time
- 40:11Speaker 3: because they announced it. They announced a different version of
- 40:13Speaker 3: the Mavick with their new triple set triple camera Hustle Blood.
- 40:19Speaker 3: So they're running the same triple Cara triple camera set up.
- 40:22Speaker 3: So it's got the one hundred megapixel wide medium and
- 40:26Speaker 3: a telephoto, and it's got the Infinity gimble which allows
- 40:30Speaker 3: for three hundred and sixty degree rotation, so you can
- 40:32Speaker 3: get three hundred and sixty degrees of view, which is
- 40:36Speaker 3: pretty cool. The Mavic four Pro supports six K sixty,
- 40:41Speaker 3: which is the first of its kind and a drone
- 40:44Speaker 3: that I've seen, and it'll do HDRU This says fifty
- 40:49Speaker 3: one minutes a flight time. I believe that when I
- 40:50Speaker 3: see it, it's faster. You know it again. But DJA
- 40:56Speaker 3: has is pushing pushing higher resolution on the pros, but
- 41:00Speaker 3: offering flexibility and size on like the minis, right, So
- 41:04Speaker 3: it's like you get flexibility with the minis, but if
- 41:06Speaker 3: the pro versions you get ultra good feature six K
- 41:10Speaker 3: you know that kind of stuff. The Mini five Pro
- 41:14Speaker 3: base and again, it's really only available in one place
- 41:19Speaker 3: in the US, and it's on Amazon. You can buy
- 41:21Speaker 3: them in the UK, but in the US it's gonna
- 41:24Speaker 3: be very difficult to get these because of the rules
- 41:26Speaker 3: and the tariffs and the regulations and stuff happening right now.
- 41:29Speaker 3: But in the UK you can get them for six
- 41:32Speaker 3: nine pounds. That's a lot of money for the base,
- 41:37Speaker 3: and it goes all the way up to with the
- 41:39Speaker 3: fly More combo with the extra controller for somebody to
- 41:42Speaker 3: fly and somebody control the camera. You're looking at about
- 41:47Speaker 3: twelve hundred euro twelve hundred pounds and the Mavig four
- 41:53Speaker 3: Pro with the fly Moore combo, which is like everything bundled.
- 41:57Speaker 3: You get the controller, you get all the fan stuff.
- 41:59Speaker 3: You're looking in almost four grand.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Wow, oh my gow.
- 42:04Speaker 3: Well that's I mean, that's you got to think about it, right,
- 42:06Speaker 3: that's including it's coming from China. You're paying a bunch
- 42:11Speaker 3: of tariffs. If it's available, the deband is really high,
- 42:15Speaker 3: so you're going to see these real ridiculus, ridiculous prices
- 42:18Speaker 3: as people try and get him into the country.
- 42:20Speaker 1: So right, right, well, yes, I just four thousand and
- 42:26Speaker 1: spending that I you know, one thing I want to
- 42:29Speaker 1: spend some money on is REELINGK cameras.
- 42:32Speaker 2: We you talked about them.
- 42:34Speaker 1: I think Matt talked about him and you talked about
- 42:36Speaker 1: him justin that you know, you wanted to get them
- 42:39Speaker 1: because the quality on them looks so good and you.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Were able to experience something the other night though. That
- 42:47Speaker 2: is absolutely crazy. But I had.
- 42:49Speaker 1: The first thing out of my mouth was what camera
- 42:51Speaker 1: do you have because my Nest does not look that good.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Yeah, no, yeah, I have. I replaced all of our
- 42:59Speaker 2: cameras with a real Link and we, you know, as
- 43:01Speaker 2: you mentioned, Matt and I both did that, but we
- 43:05Speaker 2: did not coordinate this upgrade. We kind of just did
- 43:08Speaker 2: this on our own. But yeah, so I'm using real Link.
- 43:11Speaker 2: I got rid of all the wise cams, and I
- 43:13Speaker 2: got rid of the Nest doorbell cam and I went
- 43:16Speaker 2: real Link. So yeah, I put I put a real
- 43:19Speaker 2: Link doorbell cam on my front there. And last night
- 43:23Speaker 2: I was just sitting around watching TV with my son
- 43:26Speaker 2: as around eight pm and we had the front door
- 43:29Speaker 2: open with the screen door, and I hear a loud bang.
- 43:34Speaker 2: It kind of sounded like almost like a gunshot going off.
- 43:37Speaker 2: I was like, well, what is that? I you know,
- 43:40Speaker 2: walked out and I see across the street, I see
- 43:42Speaker 2: our neighbor. Who is he's basically kind of like a
- 43:46Speaker 2: car broker. He'll buy these high end exotic vehicles, not
- 43:52Speaker 2: necessarily like Lamborghinis and Ferraris and things, but think of like,
- 43:57Speaker 2: you know, Shelby Kobra Mustangs or accurate nsx is or
- 44:03Speaker 2: a Nissan GTR. But so last night there was he
- 44:08Speaker 2: he had just gotten this Nissan GTR and we're talking
- 44:12Speaker 2: a one hundred thousand to one hundred and twenty thousand
- 44:15Speaker 2: dollars car easily. Wow, and these cars are extremely fast,
- 44:21Speaker 2: and it was a beaut and furious type car. Yeah,
- 44:24Speaker 2: like yeah, in the original fast and Furious the car
- 44:26Speaker 2: that he was racing, the one that's like silver and
- 44:28Speaker 2: blue stripes, that was a GTR. But this is obviously
- 44:33Speaker 2: a much more newer model of GTR. But anyway, it
- 44:36Speaker 2: was getting loaded onto a car hauler. So he had
- 44:40Speaker 2: hired a company to come out and take this car
- 44:43Speaker 2: to the next buyer. So he found a buyer and
- 44:47Speaker 2: it was loading up the car. Well, the person that
- 44:51Speaker 2: was loading the car, and I didn't know this until
- 44:54Speaker 2: I reviewed the actual footage, but as they were loading
- 44:58Speaker 2: the car onto the car hauler. They left the driver's
- 45:01Speaker 2: side door open while the car was running, and that's
- 45:05Speaker 2: a key point here. The car was running. They left
- 45:08Speaker 2: the driver's side door open while he went to go
- 45:10Speaker 2: retrieve I don't know, cables or something, lock, chain locks
- 45:14Speaker 2: or whatever. Somebody driving by on that same street they
- 45:19Speaker 2: hit the driver's side door of this GTR, which obviously
- 45:24Speaker 2: slammed the door shut, broke the window of the driver's
- 45:27Speaker 2: side door because of the force, but because the car
- 45:31Speaker 2: was running, the car registered it as an accident, and
- 45:35Speaker 2: it fired off the air bags, which completely totals the car. Really,
- 45:40Speaker 2: when an air bag goes off in a car, yes,
- 45:43Speaker 2: they can be replaced, but the value of the car
- 45:46Speaker 2: diminishes significantly because it'll always show in a car fact
- 45:50Speaker 2: report that the airbags have deployed. So nobody's gonna want
- 45:54Speaker 2: to buy a car that had previously had air bags
- 45:57Speaker 2: door and in a car like that.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Right, you've got side impact air bags, you've got side
- 46:02Speaker 3: curtain air bags.
- 46:03Speaker 2: You've got and that's what fired off. It was the
- 46:06Speaker 2: side impact air bags and the side curtain air bags.
- 46:08Speaker 3: So all these air bags went off, which is gonna
- 46:12Speaker 3: be tens of thousands of dollars to replace, Yeah, even
- 46:16Speaker 3: if it's worth replacing.
- 46:17Speaker 2: So you view the footage what I mean. So, I, again,
- 46:21Speaker 2: I didn't know what was going on when I walked
- 46:22Speaker 2: out there with my son to kind of look at it.
- 46:24Speaker 2: When I was stand on our front porch, there was
- 46:26Speaker 2: the car hauler was I believe of Eastern European descent,
- 46:30Speaker 2: and he was on the phone and he was just
- 46:32Speaker 2: screaming in a different language into the phone, apparently maybe
- 46:36Speaker 2: to his boss or somebody. Was just really really upset
- 46:39Speaker 2: at the whole thing. And I'm like, well, I'm not
- 46:41Speaker 2: going to go approach an angry Russian, so I'm just
- 46:44Speaker 2: gonna go back inside now. But this morning I reviewed
- 46:47Speaker 2: the footage and I had texted the owner. He wasn't
- 46:50Speaker 2: even home, he was out camping, and I texted him like, Hey,
- 46:52Speaker 2: is that your car out front there? And he's like, yeah,
- 46:54Speaker 2: the green one. What's up? And I'm like uh oh,
- 46:56Speaker 2: And he's like what what happened? And I told him,
- 46:58Speaker 2: I said, well, the air bags deplay and somebody hit
- 47:01Speaker 2: the car. And he's like what. And then I sent
- 47:03Speaker 2: him the video. And because of the video that I
- 47:06Speaker 2: was able to capture with the real link. It proved
- 47:09Speaker 2: that the company that was hauling the vehicle was at
- 47:12Speaker 2: least partially to blame because he left the door open
- 47:16Speaker 2: on an active city street while while he was trying
- 47:19Speaker 2: to load it. He should have shut the door, but
- 47:21Speaker 2: obviously the person that hit the car should have stopped.
- 47:25Speaker 2: They didn't. They kept on going, and unfortunately I was
- 47:29Speaker 2: not able to capture a license plate. But I do
- 47:30Speaker 2: have a feeling that it was somebody that lives in
- 47:32Speaker 2: the neighborhood. And now the pretty much the whole neighborhood
- 47:35Speaker 2: is on the lookout for this particular vehicle with the
- 47:39Speaker 2: description that we gave in the video. So wow, hopefully
- 47:42Speaker 2: that person will be found and held accountable too.
- 47:44Speaker 1: There are people that will say, oh, you know, I
- 47:46Speaker 1: don't need a camera, or my neighbors got one. I
- 47:51Speaker 1: tell people, why not have that extra piece of security,
- 47:54Speaker 1: And they're not that hard to install, right. The doorbell
- 47:56Speaker 1: one is a wired one, so it uses the wire.
- 48:00Speaker 1: This is electricity from the transformer that was provided to us,
- 48:03Speaker 1: you know when the house was built. So I just
- 48:06Speaker 1: had to wire in that the two wires it powers
- 48:09Speaker 1: the camera. Yeah, it took me twenty minutes to put
- 48:12Speaker 1: the doorball camera on. So yeah, no, they're they're not
- 48:14Speaker 1: hard to install, right Sean, you have WISE around the
- 48:18Speaker 1: perimeter of the house, right, Uh yeah, I.
- 48:21Speaker 3: Use Wise primary. I mean would I get more Wise?
- 48:26Speaker 3: Maybe not? I mean I really don't need any newer
- 48:29Speaker 3: other cameras. You really haven't done any mega. You have
- 48:32Speaker 3: total inside and out running or total like total, Well,
- 48:38Speaker 3: that's like let's say running one two So doorbell, front yard, garage,
- 48:46Speaker 3: inside my garage, back, living room, backyard, backslider.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Wow, I thought I had a lot a.
- 48:57Speaker 3: Pant until upstairs in the window looking out over the
- 49:00Speaker 3: neighbor's yard, right, well, looking outside that side of the house,
- 49:05Speaker 3: right whatever, it's not looking over the neighbor's yard. So
- 49:10Speaker 3: that's seven, I think, okay, plus plus the two plus
- 49:14Speaker 3: the two outdoor ones that I can take with me
- 49:16Speaker 3: when we travel, which are great. I have a version
- 49:19Speaker 3: one in the version two. The version two is significantly
- 49:21Speaker 3: better than the version one. But then I have a
- 49:25Speaker 3: ton of the Wise light bulbs. Right, so all the
- 49:28Speaker 3: light bulbs I have in here that are blue are
- 49:30Speaker 3: all light white like in my my downstairs are all
- 49:33Speaker 3: Wise bulbs, which I could change. Two in my living
- 49:36Speaker 3: room two in my on my porch of the bulbs,
- 49:41Speaker 3: so I've probably got about two dozen light bulbs total.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Now, I do hope that you know, going back to
- 49:47Speaker 2: my very first point in this in this show, you
- 49:50Speaker 2: did change the default password to those those those bulbs
- 49:56Speaker 2: and those cameras and things. Right, you have secured your
- 49:59Speaker 2: network correctly. I have.
- 50:00Speaker 3: They are all of my WISE devices are on their
- 50:03Speaker 3: own vland. So if you if you really want to
- 50:07Speaker 3: get into my WISE stuff, I mean, you either got
- 50:10Speaker 3: to be a cloud hacker or you need to have
- 50:13Speaker 3: physical access to my v land and get in that way.
- 50:16Speaker 3: You're not getting on through my guest network. But yes,
- 50:19Speaker 3: I have changed all the default stuff.
- 50:22Speaker 1: And so everybody shows up at your house dressed as
- 50:25Speaker 1: a cable repairman wants to check your system, you wouldn't
- 50:28Speaker 1: let them in.
- 50:29Speaker 3: Absolutely, not any any any service technician that comes in
- 50:34Speaker 3: and touches the network or the Internet. I'm over their
- 50:39Speaker 3: shoulders the whole time. I'm not good.
- 50:42Speaker 2: You would not let Jim carry in your house dress
- 50:45Speaker 2: Well maybe Jim, maybe the.
- 50:47Speaker 3: Cable guy, but no, I mean I'm not I get
- 50:53Speaker 3: a little nervous around. Most of them are just here
- 50:56Speaker 3: to do their job. Right, they're not going to do
- 50:57Speaker 3: anything nefarious. But all takes is one I to plug
- 51:01Speaker 3: in the laptop into your network while he's plugging in
- 51:04Speaker 3: your router and stuff and snoop some stuff and for USB.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Yep.
- 51:09Speaker 3: Yeah, So I mean, I just I'm a little paranoid
- 51:13Speaker 3: about that. So I haven't I haven't had anybody over.
- 51:16Speaker 2: But yeah, you'd never know.
- 51:17Speaker 1: All Right, you gotta take another quick break. We come
- 51:19Speaker 1: back with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 51:22Speaker 1: I'm sean to Weird.
- 51:23Speaker 2: And I'm justin. Let me find us on the net
- 51:25Speaker 2: at tech talk radio dot com. We'll be right back
- 51:28Speaker 2: and now fact to tech talk Radio. Hey, it's Carol
- 51:31Speaker 2: Parano and you listen to the geeks on the radio
- 51:33Speaker 2: tech Talk Radio. A couple of days ago, I was
- 51:35Speaker 2: looking at trying to figure out, uh, I use a
- 51:37Speaker 2: radar Omega to try to gather up the current weather
- 51:41Speaker 2: conditions around our area. And radar Omega does say that
- 51:45Speaker 2: it does show lightning, but I was I could never
- 51:48Speaker 2: get it to work properly. I was like, you know what,
- 51:50Speaker 2: there's gotta be something better out there, and I looked
- 51:52Speaker 2: it up and sure enough, there's a website and it's
- 51:54Speaker 2: called lightningmaps dot org. It's a great website. It's really
- 51:59Speaker 2: really cool. It's open source, it's free to use. It
- 52:02Speaker 2: also is community driven, so it shows you kind of
- 52:06Speaker 2: like real time where lightning is happening around the nation. Again,
- 52:10Speaker 2: it's all community driven, so there's a lot of people
- 52:13Speaker 2: that have like, I don't know, lightning sensors. I guess
- 52:15Speaker 2: I don't know what you'd call it. But yeah, it's
- 52:18Speaker 2: actually really cool and I love their their satellite imagery.
- 52:20Speaker 2: It's it's so much better than Google Maps that feel like,
- 52:23Speaker 2: I don't know what they use open street map, Open
- 52:26Speaker 2: street Map. Yeah, it's just so much smoother, it seems,
- 52:29Speaker 2: than like Google Maps. But yeah, this is a really
- 52:31Speaker 2: cool website. It's again lightningmaps dot org.
- 52:34Speaker 3: This would have been really nice to have this past
- 52:37Speaker 3: weekend because we had a lightning delay during our football game.
- 52:40Speaker 3: So we have to track for sports for us, we
- 52:44Speaker 3: have to track within a ten mile radius. Right if
- 52:46Speaker 3: lightning strikes within ten miles, we have to have people
- 52:49Speaker 3: out of open areas. They were tracking it and it
- 52:52Speaker 3: kept getting closer and closer closes right before halftime, we
- 52:54Speaker 3: got delayed by an hour and forty five minutes or
- 52:56Speaker 3: something so took but it was all because of lightning.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:59Speaker 1: It's kind of cool because then you have the say,
- 53:02Speaker 1: you see the lightning in the distance, but you want
- 53:04Speaker 1: to know how far is it away? By going to
- 53:06Speaker 1: lightning maps, you could actually see, oh, it's you know,
- 53:09Speaker 1: sixty miles away. But you know, quite the show, you.
- 53:12Speaker 3: Don't you don't listen and then count, wait how long?
- 53:17Speaker 3: One Mississippi, two, Mississippi. Okay, it's two and a half
- 53:20Speaker 3: miles away.
- 53:21Speaker 2: I saw Poltergeist, but I remember the count on that
- 53:25Speaker 2: and what it was supposed to be. I was speaking
- 53:27Speaker 2: of entertainment.
- 53:28Speaker 1: I just wanted to, you know, I don't know if
- 53:29Speaker 1: you heard the news justin you were a fan of Cyberpunk,
- 53:32Speaker 1: you played it right, yeah, off and on?
- 53:35Speaker 2: Yep. Keanu Reeves was in it, right, yep. You will
- 53:38Speaker 2: be back apparently.
- 53:39Speaker 1: I guess Johnny Silverhand they're saying that he absolutely wants
- 53:42Speaker 1: to be in Cyberpunk two.
- 53:44Speaker 3: So I don't know.
- 53:46Speaker 1: There were a lot of problems of the game when
- 53:48Speaker 1: it first launched, but they fixed a lot of them
- 53:50Speaker 1: right they did.
- 53:51Speaker 2: This is another classic story of a video game that
- 53:54Speaker 2: was under development and or in development and it was
- 53:58Speaker 2: under pressure from the published sure to release the game
- 54:02Speaker 2: regardless if it was finished or not. I guess you know.
- 54:04Speaker 2: The number one example of that would be No Man's Sky,
- 54:08Speaker 2: which was absolutely horrible upon release, but the company that
- 54:13Speaker 2: developed it said, no, we are not giving up on this,
- 54:16Speaker 2: even though the publisher made us do it. We're gonna
- 54:19Speaker 2: come out and they made it so much better and
- 54:21Speaker 2: it's actually one of the best games of all time
- 54:24Speaker 2: that I'm talking about. No Man Sky. So yes, uh
- 54:27Speaker 2: Cyerpunk twenty seventy seven again, same kind of thing, released
- 54:30Speaker 2: way too early, way too many bugs, but the developer said,
- 54:33Speaker 2: we will fix this, we will make it better, and
- 54:35Speaker 2: they have and they have made it much much better.
- 54:38Speaker 2: All Right, that's it for this week's tech talk Radio.
- 54:40Speaker 2: It's a great info.
- 54:41Speaker 1: If you have a question, drop us a line tech
- 54:43Speaker 1: guys at tech talk radio dot com.
