- 0:00Speaker 1: It's another DNA test, happy ending after seventy years of misery.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's one more thing. I'm strong and gedye. I look
- 0:12Speaker 2: forward to that. I can't imagine what that is. But
- 0:14Speaker 2: first this, as it came up in a one circle
- 0:19Speaker 2: I run in. I run in many different kinds of circles, Katie, Oh, okay,
- 0:24Speaker 2: running in circles. Indeed, this was tweeted out by Marjorie
- 0:28Speaker 2: Taylor Green yesterday. It was a retweet of a story
- 0:34Speaker 2: from Robert F. Kennedy Junior. So you combining RFK Junior
- 0:38Speaker 2: with Marjorie Taylor Green, she tweeted out, holy shit, Robert F.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Kennedy Junior just exposed democrats for poisoning children's food. This
- 0:48Speaker 2: is massive. And I didn't actually read the story, but
- 0:54Speaker 2: I saw it bouncing around and I had it brought
- 0:56Speaker 2: up to at least one person in private life about
- 1:00Speaker 2: democrats are poisoning our food and we need to watch
- 1:02Speaker 2: out for it. It's amazing, like strick nine or rat poison,
- 1:07Speaker 2: or like too much sugar and yeah, just all the
- 1:11Speaker 2: all the bad for you chemicals, which I mean, and
- 1:14Speaker 2: our kid Jr. Is standing in front of a box
- 1:17Speaker 2: of Captain Crunch and cheese, it's and all that sort
- 1:19Speaker 2: of stuff. I mean, he's not he's not lying about
- 1:21Speaker 2: how unhealthy all that stuff is. You know, stuff that
- 1:24Speaker 2: tastes good. It's all the stuff that tastes good. And
- 1:26Speaker 2: I eat some of it and I'm still alive. And
- 1:28Speaker 2: you know, I don't know if it's a did you
- 1:30Speaker 2: just cheese? Its? No?
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yes, no.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Refined garbage. You people are feeding into your bodies. Do
- 1:39Speaker 1: you not like your bodies? Do you want them to
- 1:42Speaker 1: be dead? You won't need you won't eat it?
- 1:45Speaker 2: Cheese it no?
- 1:48Speaker 3: No, what I thought I knew you.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Yeah, something is wrong. I always do with my son
- 1:53Speaker 2: when he says stuff like that, I say, get out
- 1:55Speaker 2: right now, you walk out. We're not having a miss
- 1:59Speaker 2: how you're adopted, he said. My son said the other day,
- 2:02Speaker 2: I don't like steak. I said, get out. I'm big on.
- 2:07Speaker 3: You're out of the will at this point in my life.
- 2:10Speaker 2: That's a good one. That's it.
- 2:11Speaker 1: You're out of the will. I try to avoid the
- 2:15Speaker 1: ultra process stuff. I try very hard these days.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Good for you, aren't you? Aren't you better than everyone?
- 2:22Speaker 1: Well, now I gotta look at I've got to admit
- 2:28Speaker 1: I'm really into the pretzel chips. I don't don't think
- 2:34Speaker 1: those are ultra fine, but I got to look at
- 2:35Speaker 1: the ingredients because if they are, I'll stop eating them
- 2:37Speaker 1: really right after I polish off the three bags I
- 2:40Speaker 1: got in the in the pantry.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You just hate joy. I don't understand your entire moderation. Yes,
- 2:49Speaker 2: you should see my liquor cabinet. There's a little that's
- 2:53Speaker 2: one of the first. That's one of the first things
- 2:55Speaker 2: you ever said to me thirty four years ago. Yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 2: I love Jesuits. No, everything in moderation, including moderation, which
- 3:07Speaker 2: I had, oh point, had never heard before. Yeah, that
- 3:10Speaker 2: is It's been my life story. Yeah. Now you've got
- 3:14Speaker 2: a tally band like no tolerance for Jesus, very much
- 3:19Speaker 2: like that. Yeah, replaced them with Scotch right, which.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I would make my wife walk fifteen feet behind me,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and I don't allow her to eat Jesus.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Ah boy.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So yet another one of these twenty three and Me
- 3:35Speaker 1: or whatever service it was DNA match stories. This one
- 3:38Speaker 1: is quite astounding. There's part of me that hesitates to
- 3:41Speaker 1: even bring the story because there are so many families.
- 3:43Speaker 1: You know what a zealot I am not about cheese its,
- 3:46Speaker 1: but about free range parenting, parenting and how it's important
- 3:49Speaker 1: that you let your kids take risks and try and
- 3:52Speaker 1: fail and get lost and find their way back again.
- 3:53Speaker 1: All those things did give you enough confidence to take
- 3:56Speaker 1: on life without lots of anxiety and stuff like that.
- 3:59Speaker 1: And I think this will of the great failings of
- 4:00Speaker 1: the modern world. But this is a story about a
- 4:03Speaker 1: child abduction who and you know, it's every parent's most
- 4:08Speaker 1: horrifying nightmare, certainly in that top tier. This one is
- 4:13Speaker 1: in nineteen fifty one a park in West Oakland, California.
- 4:20Speaker 1: A little boy and his a little older brother, I
- 4:22Speaker 1: think he's a couple of years older, are playing in
- 4:24Speaker 1: the park and some woman spoke Spanish to their mom,
- 4:30Speaker 1: who was born in Puerto Rico, and they chatted and
- 4:33Speaker 1: laughed and the rest of it. And it's not clear
- 4:36Speaker 1: from the story, but mom's attention was taken away or whatever.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Six year old.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Bam gone the blank of it. Wow, never found.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Oh my god, you're not required to keep your eye
- 4:49Speaker 2: on your kid every second at the park, right because,
- 4:53Speaker 2: but oh my god, that's horrific.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Worth mentioning that this sort of thing was much more
- 4:58Speaker 1: common back in the day. It wasn't It was more
- 5:00Speaker 1: common than this today.
- 5:01Speaker 2: But obviously it's way easier to get away with. I mean,
- 5:03Speaker 2: is there been no cameras anywhere, no DNA.
- 5:08Speaker 1: No cell phone pin in the tower, DNA, DNA's well,
- 5:11Speaker 1: which factors in the story. Obviously I've already said.
- 5:14Speaker 2: No, wait to the story out beyond your tiny little neighborhood.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Really right, Michael TV picked it up? Then it just
- 5:21Speaker 2: be local.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Still, so, little six year old Luis Albino was whisked away.
- 5:29Speaker 1: The only witness his older brother Roger, who again was
- 5:32Speaker 1: just a little bit older, who who saw the woman
- 5:37Speaker 1: in a bandana speaking Spanish to his Puerto Rican mom,
- 5:40Speaker 1: offered him candy and whisked him away. What happened was
- 5:44Speaker 1: this woman flew him, little Luis to the East coast,
- 5:48Speaker 1: and she and her husband raised him as their own.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Okay, so that's that's not your original fear if your
- 5:57Speaker 2: kid gets snatched, that they're gonna be raised by family
- 6:00Speaker 2: who wants a kid.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And loved right right, you know, still unspeakable nightmare. But
- 6:08Speaker 1: the problem was, for seventy years, nobody knew what happened
- 6:13Speaker 1: to him seven and the family always held the missing
- 6:17Speaker 1: child in their hearts would talk about him and had
- 6:18Speaker 1: pictures hanging up in the home. The mother, as you
- 6:22Speaker 1: might guess, worried and cried and thought about it for
- 6:26Speaker 1: the rest of her days until she passed away in
- 6:28Speaker 1: the year two thousand and five. She never gave up
- 6:31Speaker 1: hope that her son was alive somewhere. Well, he was.
- 6:37Speaker 3: What happened was his niece? I think, yeah, his name
- 6:43Speaker 3: his niece.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yeah, did one of those DNA tests and just for fun,
- 6:46Speaker 1: kicked around looking for a match and found a man. Unexpectedly,
- 6:50Speaker 1: it was a twenty two percent match, and reached out
- 6:53Speaker 1: to him but nothing. He did not respond, and I
- 6:57Speaker 1: can get that either. He thought it was a scammer.
- 6:59Speaker 1: He didn't even see it. He thought it was junk
- 7:00Speaker 1: email or what have you. And so four years went by,
- 7:05Speaker 1: but then she and her daughters started thinking about her
- 7:09Speaker 1: cousin who was whisked away and never seen again, and
- 7:12Speaker 1: started to research old Oakland Tribune articles on microfilm at
- 7:18Speaker 1: the public library, and one had a picture of her
- 7:20Speaker 1: two uncles, Roger and little Luise, who disappeared, and this
- 7:25Speaker 1: reignited a quest to find her missing relatives. So she
- 7:27Speaker 1: went to the Oakland PD and said, hey, I don't
- 7:30Speaker 1: know if this would be helpful at all, but I
- 7:32Speaker 1: found a guy who's a twenty two percent match to
- 7:34Speaker 1: me on the East coast, And so the investigator said, wow,
- 7:39Speaker 1: that could be something. Fired up the case again found
- 7:43Speaker 1: this guy. Turns out it was little Louise, who had
- 7:46Speaker 1: fought in Vietnam as a marine. He'd become a father
- 7:50Speaker 1: and a grandfather, he was a firefighter.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Did he think those people were his parents or what
- 7:55Speaker 2: was his memory of everything? They don't make that clear
- 7:58Speaker 2: because you're in the start. If you're six, you would
- 8:02Speaker 2: you'd remember being taken away from your parents.
- 8:06Speaker 1: You would have vague memories of it. But who knows
- 8:09Speaker 1: what sort of you know, hinky psychological Tell a few
- 8:14Speaker 1: tricks they played on the poor little lad.
- 8:16Speaker 2: If you told a six year old over and over
- 8:18Speaker 2: again and this is horrific, but no, your mom, your
- 8:21Speaker 2: mom and dad told me to do this. They wanted
- 8:23Speaker 2: to do this. They wanted you to be sent off.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Blah blah blah, whatever you need to so.
- 8:26Speaker 1: That that lady, that lady was your babysitter. We'd asked
- 8:28Speaker 1: her to take care of you. Sure you can repeat
- 8:30Speaker 1: that over and.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Over and over again. Yeah.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So anyway, this guy, finally Luis Uh flew out west
- 8:40Speaker 1: and met his his niece, her sister, other relatives in Oakland,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and then the next day, in a heartbreaking and heartwarming scene, simultaneously,
- 8:51Speaker 1: he met his long lost big brother, who was the
- 8:54Speaker 1: last person to see him snatched away from the park
- 8:57Speaker 1: and and they they hit it off and I had wonderful,
- 9:01Speaker 1: you know, time together. And his dad died. I'm sorry,
- 9:06Speaker 1: not his dad. His brother died a few months after that,
- 9:09Speaker 1: in July. I think of this year. It was his
- 9:12Speaker 1: final meeting. I'm sorry he was in July for three weeks.
- 9:15Speaker 1: It was his final meeting because the brother then died
- 9:17Speaker 1: in August. Sorry, I had timetable all jumbled up. But anyway,
- 9:20Speaker 1: I think he died happily. The older brother. He was
- 9:23Speaker 1: at peace with himself, knowing that his brother was finally found.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Man, can you imagine anything that heavy? Oh and the
- 9:35Speaker 3: mom who passed clinging to hope.
- 9:42Speaker 1: The gal that the niece told the Mercury News I
- 9:45Speaker 1: was always determined to find him. And who knows my
- 9:47Speaker 1: story out there? It could help other families going through
- 9:50Speaker 1: the same thing. I would say, don't give up.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Yeah, you have to wonder how many times this has happened,
- 9:55Speaker 4: and how many cases there are out there like this
- 9:57Speaker 4: that just haven't been uncovered yet.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeez, I don't know. I don't want to take this dark,
- 10:01Speaker 2: this podcast dark. But I think I assume the vast
- 10:05Speaker 2: majority of time the kids have horrific lives if not
- 10:09Speaker 2: snuffed out fairly soon. Isn't that usually the case sexual pervs?
- 10:15Speaker 2: Isn't that majority now or in nineteen fifty one? I
- 10:20Speaker 2: would have to look into that. I don't know the
- 10:22Speaker 2: answer to that question.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I assume what you're implying is correct, but I don't
- 10:26Speaker 1: know that it is. Oh, then you got the all
- 10:31Speaker 1: the crimes that have been solved with this DNA stuff.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I have many thoughts, but they're all so dark.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I don't know that I wanted to discuss them.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I haven't really, I haven't done the Hey can
- 10:45Speaker 1: you find me matches and who are my relatives around
- 10:48Speaker 1: the country? I probably should, just because you know I at.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Worst, I think it would be a big nothing.
- 10:54Speaker 2: You mean, you got a big brother you don't know
- 10:56Speaker 2: about or what? Or well no, no, I just you
- 10:59Speaker 2: know dad and another family on the side. I mean,
- 11:02Speaker 2: what are you suggesting here my dad is still with us. Please, No,
- 11:06Speaker 2: that would be shocking.
- 11:07Speaker 1: I'd imagine a lot of people have gone into it thinking, well,
- 11:09Speaker 1: what's the worst it could happen, It'll be interesting, and
- 11:11Speaker 1: then find out dad has a family across town or
- 11:14Speaker 1: what have you. But the only thing I've done, Katie
- 11:17Speaker 1: and found out is that I am so incredibly white.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I am the whitest white man who's ever whited. I mean,
- 11:26Speaker 1: for what it's worth, and I don't particularly care. I
- 11:28Speaker 1: just thought it was kind of amuse.
- 11:31Speaker 4: I'm apparently your white sister because I did the ancestry
- 11:33Speaker 4: thing and found out I am also quite white.
- 11:36Speaker 1: You're my sister from another myster Yeah, you could practically
- 11:41Speaker 1: see my bones.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I'm so white.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Just a reminder to anybody that if you do the
- 11:48Speaker 3: twenty three and meters, make sure you do a saliva sample,
- 11:51Speaker 3: not a stool sample.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Really messes up the results.
- 11:57Speaker 1: You know what, Michael, that was idiotic and great, really
- 12:03Speaker 1: messes up the results.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Oh lord, well, I guess that's it. Oh that's one
- 12:15Speaker 2: of your all time great smunk Get back an email.
- 12:18Speaker 2: You need to brush your teeth more often.
