- 0:00What can we learn from Mary's responses to life's unexpected challenges?
- 0:05Welcome to part four of our Couple's Reflection on Christmas blog series.
- 0:10In today's episode, Annie shares insights specifically for her fellow wives,
- 0:14inspired by the Christmas story as told in both Matthew and Luke.
- 0:18As we explore Mary's reactions to the angel's message and her remarkable faith,
- 0:24let's open our hearts to the lessons that can encourage us in our own journeys
- 0:28as wives and believers. Here's Annie.
- 0:32There are two accounts of Christmas stories that are commonly used in remembering
- 0:37the special celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, Matthew 1, verses 18 to 25,
- 0:44and Luke 1, verses 26 to 38.
- 0:49Reading these two portions will give us a good view and understanding of Mary's responses.
- 0:55In today's blog, we'll also consider both, and I'm praying that you,
- 0:59my fellow wife, will be encouraged as much as it encouraged and spoke to me.
- 1:04In the account of Matthew 1, verses 18-25, we can determine two clear points
- 1:10that are significant in Mary's roles. 1.
- 1:13The purpose of marriage and 2. The pregnancy of the promised seed.
- 1:18Although Mary was also declared in the engagement of Joseph,
- 1:23the direction to marriage turned to a deeper purpose when the angels spoke to
- 1:28them about the pregnancy of the virgin.
- 1:31Such purpose is the great importance of this child and how it denotes the significance
- 1:37of their participation until the arrival, the birth.
- 1:41History doesn't really give a comfortable account of a woman being pregnant
- 1:46outside marriage or being engaged in the midst of the battle.
- 1:50As noted in Deuteronomy 20 verse 7, understanding the lifestyle then would give
- 1:56us an idea of how uncomfortable this pregnancy could be not just to Mary but also to Joseph.
- 2:03We've seen this in Matthew 1 verse 19, And Joseph, her husband,
- 2:09being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.
- 2:15Some theology experts commented he deliberately consulted and determined within
- 2:22himself to dismiss her or put her away by giving her a bill of divorce in a private manner,
- 2:29which was sometimes done by putting it into the woman's hand or bosom,
- 2:34as noted in Deuteronomy 24.1.
- 2:37But we've seen how the angel cleared Joseph's discomfort and provide a clear
- 2:42explanation of the pregnancy. as it says in Matthew 1 verse 20.
- 2:47Although Matthew's account gives a good sequential of the story,
- 2:52thus somehow providing an idea of Mary's willingness or should we say calmness
- 2:57to the situation that could put her in a shameful or dangerous condition in the society.
- 3:04We can check Luke's account for more detailed Mary's responses.
- 3:08Below are Mary's responses that resonated with me in the story noted in Matthew 1 verses 18 to 25.
- 3:16One, Mary displayed discomfort from the appearance of the angel,
- 3:20which I find very natural for us women.
- 3:23Well, it could also be truth for men. She was perplexed by the statement,
- 3:28the news that emphasizes the importance of her role, and the kind of salutation
- 3:33given to her by the angel.
- 3:35Favored one, the Lord is with you, as noted in Luke 1, verse 29.
- 3:40Number two, Mary listened despite some puzzling thoughts.
- 3:45Her listening attitude somehow was driven by the encouragement.
- 3:48Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God, as noted in Luke 1 verse 30.
- 3:56Her intent listening resulted in raising a question so she'll further understand
- 4:01her role, as noted in Luke 1 verse 34. 3.
- 4:06Mary declared and honored God's sovereignty, as well as the expression of her
- 4:11obedience to faith, as noted in Luke 1 verse 38.
- 4:15Although it may not be specified in words, we can recognize Mary's calmness.
- 4:22Despite the human nature of a surprise response to an unexpected visit.
- 4:28Matthew Henry made a very profound note. Being conscious of her own innocence,
- 4:35she kept her mind calm and easy and committed her cause to him to death righteously.
- 4:41Note, those who take care to keep a good conscience may cheerfully trust God
- 4:47with the keeping of their good names and have reason to hope that he will clear
- 4:52up and not only their integrity but their honor.
- 4:56May Mary's responses serve as an encouragement to many of us,
- 5:01particularly when facing uncertainties in this life.
- 5:04We may not have similar incident of having an encounter with the angel who can
- 5:10encourage us to make a decision that aligns to God's will and purpose.
- 5:14But our acceptance of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior allows us to receive
- 5:20His promise, the Holy Spirit, as noted in John 16, verse 7, to help us.
- 5:26We also have good records of God's words, the Bible, that not just details His
- 5:32promises, His attributes, and His works.
- 5:36It also has records of previous witnesses who obeyed Him, most particularly
- 5:41the modeling of Jesus Christ while living here on earth.
- 5:44Yes, we're not used to living a life that recognizes the spiritual realm,
- 5:49but our intentionality to anchor our lives to Jesus Christ could collect experiential
- 5:54learnings and testimonies,
- 5:56our own stories of experiencing not just an angel,
- 6:00but God's presence in our lives.
- 6:03When the time comes that we'll be facing a divine appointment from Him to do
- 6:08certain things that could trigger discomfort and testing of our faith,
- 6:13we can trust Him because we experience an encounter with Him.
